Effects of Drug Abuse on the Academic Performance of Students of Selected Tertiary Institutions in Lagos, Nigeria

Drug abuse has become an international phenomenon, a torn in the flesh of nations across the globe. It has been identified as one of the precarious vices; an impediment to the academic excellence of students of tertiary institutions; and a threat to the future of the Nigerian nation. The task of the paper was to interrogate the effects of drug abuse on the academic performance of students of selected tertiary institutions in Lagos, Nigeria. A quantitative method of data collection was employed to get the task of the paper done. The work adopted social learning theory as its theoretical framework. The study found peer group pressure, experimental curiosity, remedy for low self-esteem, poor parenting and influence of role models among others as root causes of drug abuse among students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The finding revealed that the rise of drug abuse among the students of higher institutions of learning in Nigeria is at an alarming rate; by implication, absenteeism from school activities, loss of memory, lack of seriousness in academic work, declining grades, increased potential for dropping out of school and suspension from school to mention a few are attributed to drug abuse. The study concluded by recommending a peer education intervention strategy, enactment of laws to discourage drug abuse, inclusion of mandatory drug education in all educational programs, constant monitoring of students by parents, and setting up of guidance and counselling offices across the campuses. Constant awareness programmes about the effects of drug abuse on academic achievement are also appropriate.

Scholarly Publishing Practices among LIS Lecturers in Higher Institutions of Learning in Nigeria

This study investigates the scholarly publishing practices among LIS lecturers in Nigerian higher education institutions, focusing on their publishing outlets, perceived barriers, and necessary skills for successful publishing. Utilizing a descriptive survey design, the study gathered data from 362 LIS educators across Nigerian institutions through a questionnaire, analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study reveals that LIS lecturers in Nigerian higher education institutions have positive perceptions of scholarly publishing, recognizing its importance for professional growth and career advancement. Furthermore, the findings indicate that while academic journals are the primary outlet for communicating research findings, LIS lecturers also utilize a range of other channels, including conference proceedings, books, social media, and collaborative research projects, highlighting a diverse approach to scholarly dissemination. The findings emphasize the paramount importance of skills required to navigate the scholarly publishing process effectively. The study recommended that higher institutions of education should implement mentorship and training programs specifically designed to support lecturers in developing the skills needed for scholarly publishing.

Housing as a Stimulus to Students’ Academic Deliverables: A Study of Federal University of Technology, Akure

Learning environment has been a topical issue over years, most especially with rise in student population due to increasing interest in the higher institutions of learning over the years. No doubt, the existing housing facilities around higher institutions of learning in Nigeria have been stretched to overcrowding, poor maintenance culture sometimes to obsolescence. This exerts negative impact on learning outcomes as well as the overall performance of the students. The broad objective of this paper is to investigate how housing stimulates students’ academic deliverables in Nigerian higher institutions of learning with special reference to Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State. And the specific objectives are to examine the background information of the study area; examine the housing characteristics in the study area; examine the effects of housing on moral discipline of the students in the study area; determine the link between students’ housing condition and their academic deliverables. Questionnaires were used to collect information from student populace and data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The study revealed that there is significant relationship between housing condition and students’ performance, poor housing condition affect the academic deliverables of student of the study area adversely.

Impact of Vestibular Schools System in Enhancing Entrepreneurial Skills in Zamfara State

Entrepreneurship is considered as an instrument for economic development in the society. The global demand for economic integration, made it compulsory to create sustainable ways for surviving as an entrepreneurial; so as to create employment opportunities, social and rural economic development and to encourage creativity. Efforts have been intensified by the Nigerian government and other stakeholders to introduce entrepreneurship course in universities and other institutions of learning in Nigeria, but vestibular schools are exempted. For that reason, the research intends to focus on the role of vestibular schools and scholars in enhancing entrepreneurial skills for the students of vestibular schools in Zamfara state. The research objectives are to create employment opportunities and investigate possible ways and solutions of small handwork in different methods for vestibular students in Zamfara state to earn a sustainable life. The research work was carried out in some selected vestibular schools in Zamfara, neighboring states and some selected small and medium enterprise places. The research concluded with the findings: the scholars, parents, guardians and government in Zamfara state have obligations to ensure that the youth are empowered to discharge their obligations to the society, and to have a better and sound for their future.

Revitalizing Fine and Applied Arts Education in Nigerian Schools

Fine and Applied Arts Education believed to be an integral part of Vocational and Technical Education of which a nation’s ball of development rotates is suffering an embarrassing low enrolment in some of the existing higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. Based on this, the paper examined factors responsible for this ugly development and identified misconception of the subject at all levels as well as lack of knowledge of it’s in-depth value to the society as principal causes among others. It also highlighted inadequate integration of the subject into the curricular of Nigerian schools at various strata of learning despite it’s laudable objectives and improper harnessing of it’s various channels towards desired goals as part of its teething problems. The paper revealed that organising reorientation forums, widening vocational scope and establishing artists’ loan scheme among others are feasible strategies to redress the situation. It concluded that keeping the subject alive is very crucial to the sustainability of Nigeria based on its multidimensional roles and suggested among others that artists of outstanding character and proven integrity be charged with the responsibility of planning and designing a framework with which this can work effectively. ACCLIMATIZATION TO PROFESSIONAL ETHICAL STANDARDS BY ACADEMIC STAFF IN NIGERIA’S TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS OF LEARNING

This article investigated the extent to which academic staff completes their course outlines before examinations; the state of harassment of students by academic staff; the rate at which examination questions are leaked to students by academic staff; the rate at which academic staff is involved in issues of plagiarism and the level of fair evaluation and non-discrimination of students by academic staff. The study used the descriptive (survey) research design. A total of 171 academic staff selected through convenience sampling participated in the study. The instrument used in this study was constructed by current researchers, which was content validated and it also yielded a reliability co-efficient of 0.81. Findings revealed that the majority of the lecturers in Nigerian tertiary institutions ensured that they complete their course outlines before final examinations, and are not found wanting in terms of harassing their students in any form. The study further revealed that the rate at which examination questions are leaked to students by academic staff remains very low. Based on the findings, it is therefore recommended that workshops on ethics be organized for academic staff that will be geared towards helping to bring to zero level incidence of unethical activities in tertiary institutions of learning in Nigeria.<p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/soc/0046/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

Socioeconomic effects of corruption on Nigeria’s Southwest Institutions

It becomes worrisome when corruption meddles in the process of human capital formation as it is seen playing out in higher institutions of learning which is not insulated from the larger society. This study employs Organizational Culture Theories to examine the socioeconomic effects of corruption on Nigeria’s Southwest institutions. The study measured socioeconomic effect of corruption with corruption on students’ academic performance and corruption on students’ admission process. The study adopted descriptive survey research design and primary data extracted with the aid of structured questionnaire designed in a four Likert scale manner to extract information from purposively selected higher institutions of learning in the Southwest, Nigeria. The population of the study is 124, 929. This study employs scientific sampling technique determination of Krejcie and Morgan (1970) that recommends a sample size of 382 for a population below 1million. Ordinary least square regression analysis was employed to analyse the data. The study revealed that corruption on students’ academic performance and corruption on students’ admission process have positive correlation and significant effects on corruption in Southwest institutions of learning in Nigeria. Based on these findings, the study concludes that corrupt practices by all academic stakeholder on admission process and academic performance jointly aggravate corruption in southwest higher institution of learning. The study recommends that Federal and State Government should evolve a conference marking system which compartmentalizes markers and checkers while encouraging whistleblowing within the higher institutions community. Study also recommends for realtime examination and admission as lag period between examination andadmission encourages corrupt practices of racketeering.

Curriculum Design and Students’ Learning Experience in Post COVID-19 Era in Nigeria

The continuous quest for effective and global best practice in curriculum design to promote appropriate learning and teaching experiences is still not without some conundrums, particularly in the context of higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. The current study pursues the argument that curriculum design has major implications for students’ learning experience in the post-COVID-19 era in Nigeria. Remarking on the discourse of curriculum studies, not much attention has been given to the nexus between curriculum design and students’ learning experience in post-COVID-19 era in Nigeria. A total of 16 undergraduate students were recruited purposely and conveniently for interview from the Faculty of Management Science of the Lagos State University, Nigeria. NVivo (v.12) qualitative software was employed to identify themes and sub-themes which were analysed with content qualitative analytical tool. Expert contributions, quality assurance, practical knowledge and innovative contents were shown as global trends in curriculum design. In terms of the role of curriculum design in students’ learning experience, stimulating environment and the creation of higher thinking and learning experience were revealed, and the implications of curriculum design for higher education development in post-COVID-19were found to include improved e-learning and teaching experience and improvement in technology and innovation-aided teaching and learning. The study calls for the overhauling of Nigeria’s higher education curriculum in tandem with global best practices for innovative students’ learning experience.

Investigation of students’ perceptions of online learning resources and textbook materials in Nasarawa State University, Keffi

Considering the development of technology in the current era, the present research aimed at investigating students’ perceptions of online learning resources and conventional textbook materials in Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK). The population of the study comprised 6000 Post Graduate (PG) students from which a sample of 361 representing about 60 percent of the entire population was taken. The descriptive survey design was used and the setting for the study was a mix of face to face and online survey. The instrument for data collection was an investigator designed questionnaire which was pilot tested with five participants. Four research questions guided the study. The study found that, online learning material is better than conventional textbook materials in terms of coverage of topics, access to materials provision of supplemented instruction, flexible reading style, provision of current and updated information etc. The study also found that, to access online learning materials, majority of the students use Cybercafé network since the institution does not provide internet services for the students. This to a large extent contributes to why many students still patronize conventional textbook materials. The study also found that, online learning resource is more cost effective than conventional textbook materials. The study recommended that, institutions of learning in Nigeria should do away with resistance in the shift towards online learning resources and adapt their curriculum to include digital resources, and that; there should be free internet service for students on campus in all universities in Nigeria.

Redefining Entrepreneurial Education in Africa through Africanisation: A Review of the Igbo Apprenticeship System

Despite having abundant natural resources, Africa has consistently experienced high rates of poverty and unemployment. Enormous efforts have been exerted to raise living standards by integrating entrepreneurial education into the curriculum of higher institutions. Tragically, these exertions have not yielded the desired dividends. The goal of this study is to examine and evaluate how Africans can develop an Africanised philosophical framework on which their identity and worldview can be incorporated into an entrepreneurial curriculum that has been appropriated from Western nations. The conceptual research review approach was used to achieve the research objective. The findings from the review of extant literature show a paucity of empirical studies on the Africanisation of entrepreneurship education curriculum; the Igbo Apprenticeship system; a misfit between the present academic curriculum and Africa’s identity; and how the Igbo Apprenticeship System (IAS) has influenced economic, social, and environmental development in Nigeria’s Eastern region. Resulting from the failure of the present entrepreneurial education to provide the desired outcome on the continent, this study, therefore, proposed a framework that will ensure the infusion of the IAS model into the curriculum of institutions of learning in Nigeria.

REINSURANCE WITH R: PRICING, RESERVING, SOLVENCY AND PORTFOLIO ANALYSIS

The lack of education and training has been highlighted as one of the highest factors stifling the growth of the re/insurance industry in Africa. Although reinsurance is offered as a course in the insurance/actuarial undergraduate and postgraduate study programs, many higher institutions of learning in Nigeria lack the sufficient mathematical and technical faculty expertise required to thoroughly deliver the reinsurance subject matter particularly at the masters and doctorate levels. As a result of the general absence of the required expertise in the re/insurance field of study, only a couple of universities offer postgraduate programs in insurance within Nigeria. The ripple effect of this gap is consequently felt in the re/insurance sector. This paper, therefore, is meant to serve as a teaching aid to boost the postgraduate teaching and classroom experience in reinsurance and to strengthen the technical capacity of researchers in this field. First, contributions to literature from the Nigerian academic landscape is reviewed and then the computational aspect is implemented. The study aims to bridge the gap between theory and application. Both simulated and real data are used to illustrate the different concepts in reinsurance with techniques ranging from Monte Carlo simulations to various statistical distributions. The R language has been adopted because of its ease of use.

A Web-based Awareness System for Improving Open-source e-learning Software adoption by Nigerian Higher Institutions of learning

Open-source software has been widely developed and adopted for different purposes, including in the educational sector. Many institutions of learning extensively utilize open-source e-learning software to complement their in-class programs, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. But many institutions of learning in Nigeria are still unable to utilize the opportunity due to a lack of adequate awareness and guidance on how to adopt the software. This study is aimed at educating the Nigerian public on open-source e-learning software and its benefits in education, especially in tertiary institutions amid the COVID-19 pandemic. To better have a wide coverage of respondents in Nigerian tertiary institutions, we conducted an online survey and a paper-based questionnaire. A sample of 500 responses was collected from Nigerians with different high educational levels regarding Open-Source e-learning adoption and awareness. However, only 349 responses were returned. The results of the survey were analyzed using python-based analysis libraries. The findings indicated that a greater percentage of the respondents were aware of what constitutes open-source e-learning but that most institutions in Nigeria have not fully utilized the platform for learning activities. It is implied that a reasonable number of respondents have literacy knowledge of open-source learning and agree that COVID-19 has greatly influenced the use of e-learning software in Nigerian institutions. It is therefore recommended that more work be done to improve the awareness level of various institutions to fully utilize the technology and the benefits it represents. This led to the development of a web-based solution for creating more awareness among the public. This would help close the gap found in this study and affect how open-source e-learning software is used in Nigerian schools.

Coping Strategies of Nigeria Higher Education Institutions during COVID-19 Lockdown

Beginning at end of the year 2019, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has drowned the world into uncertainty and has threatened the continuity of traditional classroom learning that is the backbone and, in many cases, the main method of learning in most countries. This paper seeks to ascertain how Higher Institutions of learning in Nigeria have thrived during the lockdown period, based on the National policy document that spells out the guidelines for school reopening. Official documents such as newspaper reports university bulletins are used to corroborate in order to ascertain the implementation of the provisions of the policy guideline document as well as assess the efficacy of the measures on students’ quality of learning.

Environmental Awareness and Plastic Recycling Behaviour of Nigerian Undergraduates

Several prior studies globally have linked education with environmental awareness and behaviour, however there is a need to address the research gap in developing countries on the impact environmental education can have on pro-environmental awareness and in promoting pro-environmental behaviours (PEB) especially among university students. This paper takes into account the influence of social norms on PEB such as plastic recycling and promotes the notion of sustainable education in Higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. Recommendations for policy makers and universities are also reflected upon as Nigerian universities are urged to take pro-active steps towards adapting their curriculums and environmental volunteering activities. Furthermore, the study suggest sustainability literacy tests are incorporated into Nigerian university educational policies in other to promote pro-environmental behaviours among students.

Adult Learning Principles a Strategy for Improving Instructional Delivery in Higher Institutions of Learning in Nigeria

This paper argues that an andragogical approach to teaching and learning in higher education in Nigeria has become necessary if the goals prescribed by the National Policy on Education as regards tertiary education are to be achieved. Going by the current practice in some tertiary education institutions, students are seen as passive learners and teachers as “masters” of all knowledge. This posture naturally promotes 'banking learning' which views learners as banks within whom knowledge is deposited to be withdrawn at a later date. Since an approach such as this is inimical to the achievement of the goals of tertiary education in Nigeria, the paper advocates for the adoption of adult learning principles by teachers of higher institution of learning. Adult learning principle which is based on andragogy theory propounded by Malcolm Knowles sees learners as autonomous and self-directed; experienced; goal-oriented; relevancy-oriented; practical-oriented individuals. The paper ends by giving selective examples of how adult learning principles may be applied to higher education teaching to achieve the goals enunciated within the Nigeria National Policy on Education.

Smart pedagogy: Focus on the prospects and challenges of the flipped classroom approach in Nigerian architectural education

Architectural education in a developing country like Nigeria has remained largely dependent on the traditional learning approach/module where the architectural educator is the centre of knowledge in executing activities such as lectures, studio instructions, lab work, among others. A shift away from this method has been advocated especially in this era of information technology advancement. This study through a questionnaire survey of four higher institutions of learning in Nigeria, evaluates the prospects and challenges of implementing the flipped classroom approach. Using purposive sampling techniques, the well-structured questionnaire was used to gather data from both students and lecturers in (University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri and Yaba College of technology Lagos) regarding the subject of this study. The gathered data were analyzed using appropriate descriptive statistical tools and ANOVA. It was found that 80% of the lecturers are computer literate but only 20% opted for the use of the flipped classroom approach. Also 85% of the students prefer the use of the flipped classroom approach in architecture education. A significant relationship was observed in the perception of the students and lecturers regarding the use of flip classroom approach in Architecture education in Nigeria. The challenges and implications of implementation of flip classroom pedagogical approach for architectural education in Nigeria were also highlighted. Sustainable solutions were proffered for making architectural education more responsive to the rapid global technological development in the pedagogical approach in architectural education.

Telecommuting: A Panacea to COVID-19 Spread in Nigerian Universities

The paper examines how telecommuting could serve as a panacea to the spread of COVID-19 in Nigerian Universities. The research sample consists of 119 respondents, of which 36 are lecturers and 83 are students. The primary source was used in data collection with a structured questionnaire which employed five-point Likert – scale. The questionnaire was administered to respondents online via Google forms (https://bit.ly/3cdbkSZ). The study adopted the qualitative and quantitative data analysis method. ANOVA, Correlation and Regression analyses were used to test the Hypotheses with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. The Cronbach Alpha test was adopted for the establishment of reliability Coefficient. The findings revealed that Telecommuting strongly affects the spread of COVID-19. Furthermore, we found that online teaching could help with social distancing. Social media has a negative correlation with community spread of COVID-19, while video conferencing has a positive impact on the importation of COVID-19 and that Internet usage could curb the spread of coronavirus in Nigerian University. The study concludes that telecommuting is an effective strategy the Nigerian Government should adopt in the educational sector to avoid any future disease spread that would disrupt the academic activities. The paper recommends that the ministry of health should enforce all the Institutions of learning in Nigeria from primary to Tertiary to be Information Communication Technology,( ICT) compliance to enable telecommuting to be active and efficient.

A New Pedagogy for Training the Pre-service Mathematics Teachers Readiness in Teaching Integrated STEM Education

The development of any country in the world depends largely on its escalating focus on integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (iSTEM). Over the years in Nigeria, there are calls for action to integrate STEM disciplines as the pre-service teachers are only receiving training in the separate field of STEM. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the iSTEM course as a new pedagogy for training the pre-service mathematics teachers’ readiness in teaching the iSTEM disciplines in Sokoto State, Nigeria. The study utilised one group quasi-experimental research design. Purposive sampling was used in choosing all the 54 pre-service mathematics teachers in their 300-level undergoing a teacher training programme in Sokoto State University, Nigeria. The participants underwent a 5-week iSTEM course organised by the researchers that focused on the five levels of integration that include: Single, Combine, Multiple, Engineering Projects, and Fully Integrated STEM disciplines. Data was collected through the iSTEM pre- and post-survey Questionnaire (iSTEM-SQ) and analysed using descriptive statistics. The bar graph and non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test were also used in describing the effectiveness of the pre- and post-survey test. The findings indicated that the iSTEM course was effective in preparing and empowering the pre-service mathematics teachers’ pedagogical strategy for teaching integrated STEM in their future classroom instruction. The paper also recommends for incorporation of the iSTEM approach in the curriculum of pre-service mathematics teachers at the various institutions of learning in Nigeria.
