Tunable picosecond mid-infrared pulses generated by optical parametric generation/amplification in MgO:LiNbO_3 crystals

The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), Hirosawa 2-1, Wako-shi, Saitama 351-01, Japan A regeneratively amplified picosecond Ti:sapphire laser was used to pump optical parametric generation/amplification in 7% MgO:LiNbO(3) crystals. Mid-infrared pulses with a tunability between 2.6 and 4.5 microm and pulse durations of 2-3 ps were obtained by angle tuning. The maximum pulse energy was 17 microJ at 3.3 microm, corresponding to a pump-to-idler photon conversion efficiency of 18% for the amplification stage.

The days when piezoelectric PVDF was discovered

Abstract It was around 1970 when the piezoelectricity of PVDF was discovered by Dr. Heiji Kawai.1 In those days Kawai was at Kobayasi Institute of Physical Research before moving to Yokohama City University, and I was at the University of Electro-Communications and held also the post of consultant researcher at Kobayasi Institute, thus I was able to observe Kawai's discovery with my own eyes.

Abstract Dr. Heiji Kawai, who currently is a professor emeritus of Yokohama City University, became a regular professor in the Physics Department in May of 1970. For six years, he taught high polymer physics while at the same time continuing his scientific work at the Kobayashi Institute of Physical Research. One of his most important discoveries during this time was the piezoelectricity of high polymer films such as polyvinylidenefluoride. The report on this topic was published in the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics. At the time, few people realized the full importance of the subject, and few would have imagined that this paper was a milestone which would have wide repercussions and would ultimately lead to this special issue. Apparently Dr. Kawai knew that his discovery would have important practical applications, but he decided not to apply for a patent but rather to donate his findings to the world by publishing them in a journal, an attitude very characteristic of this extraordinary man.

Dr. kawai and the piezoelectricity of synthetic polymer

Abstract Ever since I entered Rion Co., Ltd. in 1961, Dr. Kawai has been a source of inspiration and guidance for me in many respects. At the time, he was director of the Kobayashi Institute of Physical Research and executive director of Rion Co., Ltd. I believe Dr. Kawai started to investigate the piezoelectricity of synthetic polymer around 1965. Since I had the fortune to work close to Dr. Kawai, I would like to briefly summarize his achievements for the company and the process which led to his discovery of the piezoelectricity of the synthetic polymer PVF2.

Abstract Heiji Kawai graduated from the Department of Physics, University of Tokyo in 1933. He spent most of his life as a scientist and a research director at the Kobayashi Institute of Physical Research. The major fields of his research were piezoelectric materials, acoustics and vibration. He received the degree of Doctor of Science for his work on the piezoelectric properties of Rochelle Salt crystals.

VNIIFTRI radio standards: State of the art and development trends

A survey is presented on the development of standards for HF and UHF radio engineering measurements set up all the All-Union Technical Physics and Electronics Research Institute. Prospects are considered for improving these standards together with new problems arising in this area of metrology and possible ways of solving them.

Compact electron‐accelerator system using laser‐induced photoelectrons and DISKTRON electrostatic accelerator

A new type of relativistic electron acceleration facility is being developed by the Laser Science Research Group at The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research. It utilizes laser‐induced photoelectrons accelerated by a compact DISKTRON electrostatic accelerator, which makes it possible to generate a controllable bright short‐pulsed electron beam up to the energy of 1 MeV with a low emittance (<2×10−5 mrad) and high current density (∼500 A/cm2) without any guiding field. The characteristics of the entire facility and some of the key components are described in detail. The experimental results which confirm the possibilities of increasing quantum efficiency of metal photocathodes by geometric alteration are reported. Observation of laser undulator effects in the visible wavelength was demonstrated in the facility. The coming use of the system includes a far‐infrared/submillimeter free‐electron laser using a microwiggler and generation of extreme ultraviolet radiation by the laser undulator.

Conceptual design of SPring-8 contract beamline for structural biology

At SPring-8, a contract beamline has been designed and developed for structural biology by the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN). In structural biology, three-dimensional knowledge of biological macromolecules is indispensable for understanding biological functions: x-ray crystallography, small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), and x-ray-absorption fine-structure are the typical techniques. The beamline contains two experimental stations, protein crystallography and SAXS. Both experiments can be carried out simultaneously, with dichromatic synchrotron radiation emitted from two undulators in serial arrangement. The branched beams are generated by a transparent diamond crystal. The beam for the protein crystallography station is provided by the ‘‘trichromator’’ to optimize for MAD (multiwavelength anomalous diffraction) experiments. The main feature of this concept is to minimize systematic errors in anomalous dispersion measurements for MAD experiments.

The Evolution of X-ray Analytical Instrumentation at Rigaku Corporation

Soon after Von Laue's experiment of X-ray diffraction in 1912, a similar experiment was conducted in Japan by Prof. Terada at University of Tokyo. He made direct observation of Laue spots from rock-sault on a fluorescent screen. In 1914, Prof. Nishikawa also at University of Tokyo photographed Laue spots of spinel. The X-ray generator employed was one designed for medical use. The first X-ray diffractometer in Japan was fabricated in the 1920s at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, It was designed with reference to Bragg's spectrometer using an ionization chamber as the X-ray detector.In 1932, X-ray generators and cameras were manufactured by Rigaku Denki Mfg., the predecessor of the present Rigaku Corporation, Shimazu Mfg. and some other few companies. X-ray tubes at the time were Coolidge type demountable tubes.

SPring-8 and Biophysics Research.

Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) and the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) have jointly been constructing a third generation, hard X-ray synchrotron radiation facility, SPring-8, in Harima, Hyogo. We expect the first X-rays in February, 1997 and ten public beamlines will be subjected to scientific program by the middle of FY1997. In the paper, the outline of the SPring-8 Project will described. In the rest, the scientific program which may be promoted in the third generation synchrotron radiation sources is discussed in terms of key words, expressing characteristics of SPring-8.

The amoeba—a flexible organism called RIKEN

Two aims of RIKEN, the Japanese Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, are “to conduct comprehensive research in science and technology” and “to disseminate the results of research and new technological developments”. How RIKEN is organized and managed in order to pursue these goals is the subject of this essay, which likens RIKEN to a unicellular, multinuclear animal living in the Sea of Japan. Details are given of the Frontier Research Program, which is designed to further cooperation with the wider international research community.

Measurement of the 8Li( alpha,n)11B reaction cross section at energies of astrophysical interest.

The cross section for the $^{8}\mathrm{Li}$(\ensuremath{\alpha},n${)}^{11}$B reaction, which is crucial to predictions of primordial nucleosynthesis in inhomogeneous models, has been measured using the radioactive-beam facility of the Institute for Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN). The reaction cross section to all allowed $^{11}\mathrm{B}$ states was found to be larger than that to just the $^{11}\mathrm{B}$ ground state by about a factor of 5.
