Security and preservation of election data in Nigeria in the fourth industrial revolution

A fraud-free and credible election is a necessary ingredient to the growth of democracy. Election malpractices and violence, from 1959 till date, have offered major challenges to the Nigerian political system. To achieve a sustainable democracy in Nigeria, it is important to build public trust by ensuring the security and preservation of electoral data. The world has gradually moved into the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), an era where artificial intelligence, big data, internet of things, robotics, blockchain, cloud computing and 3-D printing technologies dictate the pace of activities in all walks of life. This paper suggests specific 4IR technologies solutions to electoral data security and preservation challenges. It also suggests that the Nigerian Government announce policies to serve as catalysts for the Independent National Electoral Commission and stakeholders to harness these developments to ensure that electoral processes benefit from these technologies.

Leon Trotsky and the political conundrum of international relations

In this article we identify the ways in which Leon Trotsky’s ideas constitute a powerful resource to understand the contemporary crisis of international relations and its historical roots in the 20th century. Trotsky’s concept of uneven and combined development has already been highlighted as a signal contribution by an established scholarship in and around the discipline of International Relations. While this is a welcome development, we contend that it has come at a significant cost, detaching Trotsky’s theoretical insights from his revolutionary politics. We employ a different mode of engagement with Trotsky’s ideas, focusing on the theory of Permanent Revolution as an expression of an original analysis of the dialectic between the national and the international. Far from being a theoretically detachable and politically erroneous appendage to the more fundamental and applicable concept of uneven and combined development, we argue that Permanent Revolution constitutes its necessary culmination, as well as Trotsky’s most significant contribution to classical Marxism. We then elucidate how, writing in the first half of the 20th century and applying his theory of Permanent Revolution, Trotsky was able to diagnose certain essential lines of political development – the rise and ongoing breakdown of American hegemony, the political degeneration and collapse of the Soviet Union, and the emergence and failure of the postcolonial independent nation states – tracing the long and crisis-ridden trajectory of international relations from the second half of the 20th century down to today.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Conduct of 2023 General Elections in Nigeria: A Discourse

The study analyzes the conduct of 2023 general elections in Nigeria. The 2023 general elections were conducted by INEC on 25th February, and March, 18th 2023. INEC was constituted in 1998 by Abdulsalam Abubakar. The roles of INEC are, delimits the country into constituencies for the purpose of electing representatives into government, organizes/conducts elections into various levels of government, registers political parties wishing to contest elections, register voters, recruits, trains and deploys officials to different part of the country to assist in the conduct of elections. The perpetration of electoral violence by desperate politicians, late arrival of electoral materials and some officials of INEC to polling units, malfunctioning of electronic machines in some places and vote buying by politicians, among others were examined by this paper. This paper adopts system theory propounded by Gabriel Almonds, David Easton and Von Bentallaffy. This study uses the qualitative method of research, relying exclusively on secondary source of data such as textbooks, newspapers, journals, magazines, among others. The data gathered were summarized. The findings of the study shows that the presidential election conducted on 25th February by INEC was won by Bola Ahmed Tinubu of All progressive congress (APC).In the Governorship election held on March 18th 2023, APC won in 16 States, PDP won in 10 States, NNPP won in One State while Labour party won in Abia State. The paper recommends that; INEC, politicians and the electorates should adhere strictly to the laws, rules and regulations guiding the conduct of general elections in Nigeria. INEC should make adequate preparations before embarking on future general elections.

Political Conflict and Electoral Violence in Nigeria: Implications on National Security

The Electoral contest in many developing democracies in Africa including, Nigeria, are faced with the challenges of conducting free, fair, credible and violence-free elections. Political violence has become a stain on our democracy. The paper therefore assessed the impact of electoral violence on national security in Nigeria. The paper adopted the descriptive analytical approach. The data collected were classified, analyzed and organized chronologically in a manner that ensured effective interrogation and presentation of the interests driving the debate on the subject matter to ensure adequate comprehension. The frustration aggression theory was used to explain the cause of electoral violence in Nigeria. The study found out that Political violence is now a stain in our democracy that is now seen as a political structure and strategy for employment during election and the use of weapons during election have an after effect on the national security. Consequently, some policy recommendations were made. The political umpire has to take conscious and strategic actions against political violence, due to the fact that action and inaction of the government plays a major role in either stopping or continuing the menace. Appropriate security network and intelligence should be organized to monitor electoral activities to mitigate incidences of violence. The Independent National Electoral Commission should conduct transparent and credible elections while the political parties and candidates should ensure strict compliance with electoral regulations

Analysing Western Classical Ballet with Bourdieu's Field Theory How to use it as a social stratification tool

Known as one of the representatives of elegant art，western classical ballet holds a certain status and influence in Western society, During the reign of Louis XIV in France, with his vigorous promotion, ballet gradually flourished, even serving as a tool for the king's prestige to achieve French national independence [1]. Through analyzing the phenomena of ballet in the western society, it can be found that classical ballet has become a social stratification tool in Western society. The learning threshold for Western classical ballet is relatively high, and students from upper-class society have more opportunities to receive high-level classical ballet education, while students from lower-class society often lack the corresponding capital and other issues to gain equal opportunities. However, ballet in China, through the combination of localisation and orientalisation, ballet has become a popular dance form for the Chinese public. This paper will analyze how Western classical ballet serves as a social stratification tool in Western society using Bourdieu's field theory, comparing with the social function of ballet in China.

SOME SPECIFIC FEATURES OF THE GENESIS OF MODERN BELGIAN POLITICS

This article discusses the symbolism of the year 1830 in the transition from the old political order to the establishment and gradual consolidation of the modern Belgian state. Modern constitutionalism was characterized by the struggle against monarchical absolutism and the concentration of political power in the hands of a single person. In addition, it supported the respect of civil rights and liberties, the individual being at the center of liberal philosophy, along with the idea of a representative government, the separation of powers in the state and the supremacy of the rule of law. The spread of the revolutionary wave from 1830 throughout the country opened a new period in the history of Belgium, in which the ideas of centralizing the state and asserting national independence merged with the urgency to give a direction to the state by choosing the representative monarchy as a form of governance and with the introduction of the Senate as an intermediate power. By analyzing the Belgian deputies’ speeches, this article aims to make an introduction in the way the deputies imagined the construction of the state and to advance the idea of a mutual trajectory of the Belgian society in accordance with the young European nations.

Entangled migration states: mobility and state-building in France and Algeria

ABSTRACT This article develops the concept of ‘entangled migration states’ as a means of highlighting the centrality of migration governance to state-building processes, the constitution of state sovereignty, and interstate relations. Drawing on the example of France and Algeria, it demonstrates the key role that migration played in three phases of state-building: the colonial period of Algérie française; the Algerian nationalist independence movement; and postcolonial state-building. In the case of France and Algeria, at least three actors constructed and instrumentalised migration and mobility regimes as sources of power and control – the French imperial state; the non-state Algerian independence movement; and the newly sovereign postcolonial Algerian state. A focus on the entangled nature of migration management allows for a deeper historicisation of contemporary migration regimes and draws attention to the central role played by migration diplomacy and transnational governmentality in contemporary migration management regimes, thus calling into question some of the spatial assumptions undergirding the ‘migration state’ concept. The article traces the evolution of mobility patterns and control in the Franco-Algerian case; their relationship to state-building processes; and the implications for rethinking the ‘migration state’.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are business activities or businesses that can be done by everyone, as long as the person can manage and develop the business. SMEs also have a role in economic independence, which in turn can lead to national independence. SMEs in running their business will be pursued is related to revenue and profit. The purpose of this study is to analyze the direct effect of education level on the financial behavior of SMEs in Gresik, and the indirect effect with financial literacy as an intervening variable. The results showed that the level of education affects financial literacy and financial behavior, financial literacy affects financial behavior, while for the indirect effect, financial literacy can be a mediating variable for the level of education on financial behavior

Ukraine and Russia, Ireland and Britain: Quasi-colonial subjugation, anti-imperial nationalism and conflict, end of empire, and ‘the lost peace’: A review essay

This essay reviews new books on the fraught relationships between Ukraine, Russia and North Atlatic Treaty Organization countries since 1990, and on comparative studies of quasi-colonial subjugation, the development of anti-imperial nationalism and conflict, and protracted and violent transitions to full national independence in Ireland and Ukraine. There are comparisons of the ways in which four centuries of recurrent tension, conflict and divergence between Ukraine and Russia either resembled or differed from the five centuries of fraught relationships between Ireland and Britain. Ireland’s Great Famine (1846–1849) is compared with Ukraine’s Holodomor (1932–1933). The essay also assesses conflicting attributions of responsibility for ‘squandering’ the opportunity to enhance European security and global peace during the 1990s, and for bringing about dramatic escalations of Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2014 and 2022 – initiating a ‘Second Cold War’ from 2014 onward.

Dominance and technology war

Three regimes of technology leadership are compared. Firstly, technological innovation in a unipolar world with one dominant country that can sell its technology to a set of small countries. Secondly, competition for leadership between two large countries, with small countries that are independent. Thirdly, a decoupled world in which all small countries are allied with one or the other big country. Small nations fare best when they are independent and large nations engage in leadership competition. Great power nations prefer unipolar leadership. If there are two big nations, they prefer a decoupled world that is partitioned into zones of influence, compared to competing with each other.

Pengaruh Nasionalisme Soekarno Terhadap Ketatanegaraan dan Politik Islam di Indonesia

This article analyses the influence of Soekarno's secular nationalism in forming the Indonesian state. Soekarno, as one of Indonesia's proclaimers of independence and its first president, had a key role in shaping the new country's national identity and political direction. This article describes how Soekarno's secular views influenced the struggle for independence and the formation of the Indonesian state and how this vision of secular nationalism was reflected in various policies and programs of his government. In his writings, Soekarno emphasized the importance of Pancasila as the basis of an inclusive state ideology and reflected the spirit of secular nationalism. Soekarno's vision of secular nationalism was also reflected in his efforts to advance social and economic equality among the Indonesians and promote national independence through industrialization and the nationalization of vital assets. However, this article also highlights the controversy and criticism that Soekarno faced regarding his approach, which tended to be authoritarian in dealing with political opposition and resistance from certain religious groups. At the end of his reign, Sukarno's secular nationalist views began to be challenged by various groups who emphasized religious identity in political discourse. Overall, this article presents a comprehensive picture of the influence of Soekarno's secular nationalism in forming the Indonesian state. Although some aspects of his political approach are controversial, the legacy of Soekarno's secular nationalism remains an important part of Indonesia's national identity. It is relevant in facing the nation's future challenges.

Progress in the fight against malnutrition in Mozambique: A review of policies, action plans, and nutritional intervention programs

Malnutrition is a public health problem in Mozambique, where 37% of children under five suffer from chronic malnutrition and 4% from acute malnutrition. Since national independence in 1975, action plans have been implemented to reverse this situation. Objective: To analyze the progress made in the fight against malnutrition through the policies, action plans and programmes implemented in the country since independence. Methodology: Documentary study, whose main data sources consisted of Demographic and Health Survey reports, Family Budget Surveys, SMART Surveys, Integrated Classification of Food Security Stages reports, information from FAO databases, as well as other studies on the nutritional situation in the country. The WHO and UNICEF classifications were used to describe the prevalence rates of malnutrition. Results: Except for acute malnutrition, which reduced from high to low between 1997-2023, the prevalence of chronic malnutrition had no statistically significant reductions and remains very high. Factors such as food insecurity, high illiteracy rates, armed conflict in northern Mozambique, poverty, unequal distribution of basic resources between provinces, weak monitoring and evaluation systems in the action plans implemented, poor investment in agriculture, covid-19, as well as the effect of climate change, which constantly affects the country, are the main causes. Conclusion: Despite efforts, malnutrition continues not to show significant reductions, which calls for further study and improvement of policies, as well as the control of risk factors.

Smashing Statues: Re-evaluating Iconoclasm in History

Abstract In 2020, as statues around the world were pulled down, intellectuals scrambled to make sense of the phenomenon. Veteran voices joined new experts from varied disciplines in contributing to the established field of iconoclasm studies, adding to the ongoing debates around history, memory, politics and public monuments. This seemingly global movement was fuelled by, and indeed fuelled, debates among the broader public about the meaning of statues in public life, and whether colonial statues of white men with dubious political and moral histories should remain in place or be removed from sight. The movement also met with a certain amount of backlash from conservative commentators who positioned themselves as the champions of Empire and a particular version of history in Britain, and from right-wing groups attempting to defend what they saw as an attack on white culture. The debate around statues, in other words, quickly became politically fraught. The authors ask what four recent works on iconoclasm add to an already extensive literature. What do they bring to the debates around history, memory, politics and public monuments? Two of the books (Thompson and Tunzelmann) are aimed at a broader readership, while the other two (Freedberg and Tugendhaft) are more specialised in their approach. We conclude that what is missing from these works is a global and comparative approach to the destruction of racist statues that also considers struggles against colonialism in national independence and Indigenous resistance movements throughout the modern and early modern periods.

Language policy and national identity evolution in a new nation

Abstract Previous studies of the Linguistic Landscape in Timor-Leste conducted over a decade ago found Portuguese language use dominated official signage, although English dominated overall through its presence on commercial signs, especially those targeting the more affluent parts of society. This innovative study revisits a previously examined LL in order to investigate changes in language practice over time, with particular attention to how the recently independent nation expresses its national identity in public spaces and how language policy decisions have taken effect. The findings show that the visibility of Portuguese has increased while that of English has reduced. This suggests that being Portuguese-speaking may be aligned with expressions of Timorese identity. Further, while multiple languages are found in the LL, of the indigenous languages only Tetun, one of the two official languages of Timor-Leste, has a presence. This may raise concerns about the vitality of those other indigenous languages.

“We are here, but our hearts are in Haiti”: temporal and racialized emotive existences of ethnically identified Haitian Americans

ABSTRACT This study argues that three racialized emotive existences – nostalgia, fear, and hope – mark ethnically identified Haitian Americans’ temporal and cultural narratives of Haiti. First, nostalgia highlights Haiti’s significance as the first independent Black nation in the Western Hemisphere and the pride it evokes for Haitian Americans who grew up in a society that shunned them. Second, fear emphasizes the growing concern for safety as political instability, economic deprivation, and natural catastrophes undermine Haiti. Fear and anxiety prompt the need for physical safety and distance, while Haitian Americans also desire the emotional security of their parents’ presence in response. Finally, Haitian Americans anticipate a future that permits Haiti’s history and beauty to be the focal point. Much of this focus is on their children, but hope draws Haitian Americans back to Haiti. The findings suggest that racialized emotive existences frame Haitian Americans’ (dis)connection and reveal tenuous ties to Haiti. This study demonstrates how regimes of power, anti-Blackness, and subjectivity shape discourses about the home country.

The society that has been formed is bound by ties of religion, ethnicity, race, a sense of interdependence, mutual influence on work effectiveness and efficiency, has the same characteristics, and laws that regulate these relationships. The more ties that bind, the stronger the bonds of a society. The crystallized national consciousness of the Indonesian nation was born from a sense of shared fate and shared responsibility. This sense of fate is a result of colonialism in the past. National awareness has succeeded in forming Indonesia's national outlook as stated in the Youth Pledge. The feeling of one homeland, one nation and one language is a strong bond and needs to be preserved. National awareness has given birth to a united determination, declared politically as an independent and sovereign nation in the Proclamation of 17 August 1945. A national state like Indonesia is a state formed on the basis of a national spirit. The aim is to build a shared future under one and the same country even though the people have different religions, races, ethnicities or groups. Plurality is a very valuable cultural treasure that can be used as social capital to build a peaceful national life, but on the other hand it is a very heavy social burden. The history of the Indonesian nation records a multidimensional crisis in 1997 which threatened the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia. The phenomenon of this crisis is a decline in national morals, such as a lack of politeness and honesty among the Indonesian people, and a decrease in their attention to applicable laws. The causes are factors originating from within the country such as weak understanding and practice of religion and factors originating from abroad such as the influence of globalization

ROUSSEAU AND HO CHI MINH'S VIEWS ON THE CONSTITUTIONAL AND LAWFUL STATE – FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE IN VIETNAM

Inheriting the humanistic and revolutionary spirit of the French Enlightenment, especially from Rousseau, in the twentieth century, President Ho Chi Minh, on the foundation of Marxism-Leninism, solved the problem of the liberated nation, human rights, and civil rights with realistic social revolutions, contributing to the common progress of humanity according to the ideals of freedom and equality for all people and peoples. The socialist state of Vietnam, from the first days of its founding, has been a constitutional and legal state in accordance with all principles of a legitimate state. Thanks to its legitimacy, the Vietnamese state had gained the strength and legitimacy needed in the struggle to protect national independence from hostile forces. Facing the requirements of socio-political reality, Vietnam, on the theoretical basis of Ho Chi Minh's thoughts, has made efforts to consolidate and perfect the state to ensure civil and human rights in the country, contributing to promoting peace, cooperation, and progress of the world. Sharing for Caring dalam Menumbuhkan Kemandirian Anak Generasi Z di Panti Asuhan Menuju Indonesia Emas 2045

Generation Z or commonly known as Gen Z are those born between 1995 and 2010. Generation Z is also usually called the post-millennial generation who cannot be separated from smartphones. Apart from that, Gen Z is also known as a creative and innovative generation. However, Gen Z has a high tendency towards anxiety and stress. Therefore, there needs to be good control for each individual. One thing that can be done is to increase a child's independence. Learning to be independent is not an easy matter, especially for children who do not live with their parents, independence is a necessity that they must have, just like children who live in orphanages. So far, the demands of the conditions of children in orphanages mean that they must be able to become independent children, who must be able to take care of themselves and as much as possible not be too dependent on other people. The aim of this activity is to foster the independence of children in orphanages. This service activity was carried out at the Jabal Nur Orphanage on Jalan Kacong Dg Lalang, Tombolo Village, Somba Opu District, Gowa Regency by conducting interactive observations and sharing with children and the orphanage administrators. Through this sharing for caring community service activity, it is hoped that children's independence will grow in the current generation Z era, especially in facing the technological era which is developing so rapidly. In this way, generations of independent nations will be born towards a golden Indonesia in 2045.
