Bayesian network methodology and machine learning approach: an application on the impact of digital technologies on logistics service quality

PurposeThis paper aims to use Bayesian network (BN) methodology complemented by machine learning (ML) and what-if analysis to investigate the impact of digital technologies (DT) on logistics service quality (LSQ), employing the service quality (SERVQUAL) framework.Design/methodology/approachUsing a sample of 244 Italian firms, this study estimates the probability distributions associated with both DT and SERVQUAL logistics, as well as their interrelationships. Additionally, BN technique enables the application of ML techniques to uncover hidden relationships, as well as a series of what-if analyses to extract more knowledge.FindingsThis study was funded by the European Union—NextGenerationEU, in the framework of the GRINS-Growing Resilient, INclusive and Sustainable project (GRINS PE00000018—CUP B43C22000760006). AbstractIn recent years, scholars and practitioners have increasingly recognized the profound impact of digital technologies (DTs) on reshaping organizations' value propositions and their ability to create, communicate, and deliver value to stakeholders. Given this heightened attention, it is imperative to comprehensively examine how DTs affect marketing innovations. This study reports the results of a systematic review of empirical research on DTs' role in marketing innovations. Specifically, it identifies a comprehensive list of technologies and investigates their relevance in enabling innovative approaches within marketing research, strategy formulation (segmentation, targeting, and positioning), and implementation (product, promotion, place, and price). The study synthesizes emerging themes in the literature, pinpoints research gaps, proposes a 3As framework for classifying DTs in marketing, and delineates future research directions in this pivotal domain.

Smart cities, virtual futures? – Interests of urban actors in mediating digital technology and urban space in Tallinn, Estonia

Urban spaces are reconfigured as digital technologies are increasingly embedded into cities. While existing research has considered the role of urban actors in implementing digital technologies as part of the smart urbanism framework, it has insufficiently considered the role that urban space plays for individual stakeholders and the implications this has for how they contribute to digital cities. This article therefore explores the converging interests of urban actors in mediating digital technology adoption in urban space. It draws on literature on the spatial impact of digital technologies, digital urban growth, and urban governance theory to frame the agency of urban actors to mobilise resources and collaboration to protect their interests. The paper provides insight into how interests in digital technology adoption and in the use of urban space intersect in a middle-sized European city – Tallinn, Estonia – and how these interests converge between local key stakeholders in local governance. Based on a thematic analysis of interviews, it is argued that the potential of digital technologies to dislocate functionalities from physical urban space should be understood against the backdrop of local actors’ interests. It is therefore suggested that smart urbanism should be understood as a framework through which actors of the city attempt to seize the benefits of digital technologies without compromising their interests in urban space.

Human centered digital transformation in travel: a horizon 2050 paper

Purpose The impact of digital technology in the wider travel field has been substantial and significant, changing both the competitive landscape of businesses and the behavior of travelers. However, we are now on the cusp of new digital developments encompassing cloud computing, blockchain, internet of things (IoT) and above all, artificial intelligence (AI), which are predicted to disrupt the business and consumer sides of several industries – travel included. This study aims to frame this upcoming digital transformation in travel within a human-centered approach where the critical understanding of digital humanism principles will enrich social scientists’ research agenda in the coming years. Design/methodology/approach The viewpoint follows a structure based on (i) setting the scene for the rise of digital transformation, (ii) the historical perspective on digital transformation in travel, (iii) the pandemic’s impact and (iv) future development and research agenda. Findings It is only by fostering a human-centered digital transformation perspective that social science researchers in travel can realize the “high-tech for high-touch” promise of fostering a human-to-human encounter empowered and possibly hampered, by digital technologies. This work proposes to start from the concepts of digital technology control, participation, education and ethics to design a research agenda with a 2050 horizon. Originality/value This work has been designed to shift the attention of researchers toward a human-centered digital transformation approach to reflect on the human-machine relationship for a better society. Due to its inner characteristics the travel field can foster a reflection on this topic by reaffirming the centrality of human beings and their authorship in the travel product creation.

Does digital technology enhance the global value chain position?

Embedding new technology creates opportunities and challenges for the global value chain (GVC). Using country-level panel data from 59 economies in 2007–2018, we construct a fixed-effects model to investigate the relationship between digital technology and the GVC position. Moreover, we examine how digital technology affects the GVC position with a mediating model and consider the heterogeneity of this impact on GVC status. The main findings reveal a U-shaped relationship between digital technology and the GVC position, which means that, during the catch-up stage of digital technology, negative effects on input demand chains lead to a decline in GVC status, whereas, at a mature phase of technological development, positive effects on output supply chains enhance the GVC position. The impact of digital technology on the ascent in GVC status is mediated by productivity. Moreover, we analyze the different impacts of trade openness and economic development levels. Our findings suggest that countries with lower levels of economic development and high trade openness reach a U-shaped inflection point, accelerating their progression in the global value chain.

This study aims to evaluate the impact of digital technology on youth leadership development in the USA. The research explores how digital technology, such as social media, online platforms, and digital communication tools, influences the development of leadership skills and qualities among young people. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a diverse sample of youth leaders across the USA. Quantitative surveys are used to assess the extent to which digital technology is used in leadership development programs and its perceived impact on leadership skills. Qualitative interviews provide deeper insights into how digital technology influences the development of leadership qualities, such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Preliminary findings suggest that digital technology plays a significant role in youth leadership development, offering new opportunities for learning and growth. Social media platforms, in particular, are identified as valuable tools for connecting with peers, sharing ideas, and mobilizing support for various causes. However, the study also highlights challenges associated with the use of digital technology, such as the risk of information overload and the potential for online harassment and bullying. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for educators, policymakers, and youth organizations to recognize the potential of digital technology in enhancing leadership development while addressing its challenges. Recommendations are provided for integrating digital technology into leadership development programs effectively, including the importance of digital literacy education and the need for policies that promote safe and responsible digital practices among young leaders. Overall, this study contributes to the growing body of literature on the impact of digital technology on youth development, providing valuable insights for practitioners and policymakers seeking to harness the power of digital technology for youth leadership development in the USA.

Understanding the implications of digitalization for rural schools is important for informed policy-making. This study investigates the current status of digital education and its prospects in rural Bangladesh. It aims to explore the Access, utilization, and impact of digitalization in educational settings, focusing on rural schools. The study uses a mixed-methods approach to assess digitalisation in rural education, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, and observation. It examines Access to digital resources, identifies barriers to integrating technology in learning, and explores the use of digital tools and platforms in teaching and learning from both teacher and student perspectives. This study analyzes the impact of digitalization on education in rural schools in Bangladesh. It aims to uncover the benefits and challenges of digital transformation and assesses the role of government initiatives, educational policies, and community involvement. The findings of this study highlight the need for targeted interventions to address the digital divide in rural education. Digital Technologies, Environmental Governance and Environmental Performance: Empirical Evidence from China

This research conducts an empirical analysis of the relationship between digital technologies, environmental governance (assessed through environmental taxes), and China's environmental performance from 1995 to 2020. Additionally, within the framework of the STIRPAT model, the impacts of GDP and urbanization on ecological footprints are examined. This study is distinguished by its innovative approach to evaluating environmental performance via ecological footprints and the application of the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model along with Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS), Canonical Cointegration Regression (CCR), and Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) as long-run estimators, methodologies not previously applied to this context in China. The findings indicate that digital technologies and environmental taxes contribute to a reduction in ecological footprints, while GDP and urbanization have an adverse effect, increasing ecological footprints. Post-estimation diagnostics confirm the absence of serial correlation and heteroskedasticity, and affirm the normal distribution of the disturbance terms. For a robustness check, the study further employs DOLS, FMOLS, and CCR methods, which corroborate the initial results regarding the beneficial impact of digital technologies and environmental governance on ecological footprints. Based on these findings, the study advises the Chinese government and policymakers to enact more effective environmental tax policies and leverage digital technologies to enhance environmental sustainability in China.

A Longitudinal Analysis of the Impact of Digital Technologies on Sustainable Food Production and Consumption in the European Union.

In today's landscape, digital technologies hold immense potential in tackling challenges associated with food sustainability. This study aims to contextualize a broader investigation of food sustainability and digitalization within the agricultural sector. Its objective is to explore the influence of digital technologies on sustainable food production and consumption, particularly examining relationships among digital technologies, municipal waste, agricultural output, nitrogen emissions, methane emissions from agriculture, and Goal 12 Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG12). Through the use of Structural Equation Modeling, the empirical investigation scrutinizes the relationships between digital technology use and critical variables linked to food sustainability in a longitudinal analysis. The results highlight the significant impact of extensive digital technology use on municipal waste, sustainable production, and consumption, indirectly influencing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Empirical research findings reveal a negative influence of digital technologies on responsible consumption and production (path coefficient -0.349, p values < 0.001), suggesting an impact of digital technologies on diminishing sustainability in consumption and production. The relationship between digital technologies and municipal solid waste is also negative (path coefficient -0.360, p values < 0.001), suggesting that the use of digital technologies can contribute to reducing the amount of municipal solid waste. Digitalization has the potential to improve the sustainability of supply chains by reducing resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions associated with production and distribution operations.

Research on the Impact of Digital Technology Application on Households Calculation Based on Household Digital Penetration Index

With the widespread popularization of digital technology and its continuous penetration into family life, the impact of digital technology on the national economy and residents' lives has gradually emerged. Based on the CFPS database, this article uses the A-F model to measure the household digital penetration index, explores the popularity and application of digital technology in households, and uses an empirical model to analyze the impact of the household digital penetration index on household income, consumption and income gaps. Research results show that digital technology has increasingly penetrated households from 2010 to 2020. The household digital penetration index can effectively increase household income and stimulate consumption, but it also widens the household income gap to a certain extent. At the same time, the impact of household digital penetration index on residential households shows obvious spatial heterogeneity.

Impact of digital technologies on implant surgery in fully edentulous patients: A scoping review.

For over three decades, digital technologies have been used in Implant Dentistry, beginning with the introduction of planning software for Static Computer-Assisted Implant Surgery (S-CAIS). During this time, this field has witnessed the emergence of diverse methodologies and a proliferation of technological advancements. Today, S-CAIS is a widely adopted procedure for the placement of dental implants in both partially and fully edentulous patients, with Dynamic Computer-Assisted Surgery (D-CAIS) and Robotic-Assisted Implant Surgery (RAIS) rapidly gaining attention among dental professionals. The continuous advancements in this arena are not merely indicative of technological progress; they represent a steadfast dedication to refining precision, enhancing efficiency, and fostering innovation with the goal of optimizing patient outcomes in dental implantology. The purpose of the following review is to meticulously examine the spectrum of digital technologies available and to describe their protocols, advantages, and shortcomings as well as to evaluate their accuracy in implant surgery in patients with complete edentulism. A scoping review was performed following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) protocols, leveraging the population, concept, and context (PCC) framework to construct the research question and determine the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two hundred and sixty-seven records were identified for screening. After applying all the screening criteria, 41 articles were included for review and qualitative data analysis. S-CAIS, D-CAIS, and RAIS were identified as the main technologies for computer assisted implant surgery. Their applications, characteristics, protocols and levels of accuracy were compared and described. Taking into consideration the limitations of this study, S-CAIS appears to be the most applied and validated technology in implant surgery for fully edentulous patients followed by D-CAIS and RAIS being these last two promising initiatives in the field. Despite having similar levels of accuracy, the overall comparison showed a slightly higher values in RAIS followed by D-CAIS and S-CAIS.

Reading Moroccan fiction in the digital age: Abdelouahed Stittou’s novel Zohra Liza as a case study

ABSTRACT This article explores twenty-first Century Moroccan fiction with a focus on the novels published on social media. By analysing Abdelouahed Stittou’s first Arabic Facebook novel, Zohra Liza, as a case study, I highlight the impact of digital technologies, namely social media platforms, on the contemporary North African novel. On the one hand, I suggest that using Facebook as a medium for publishing Zohra Liza profoundly redefined the roles of the author, Abdelouahed Stittou, who had to adjust to the new reading habits of social media users.In this respect, I contend that this shift in the author/ reader dynamics began with reader response theory, but it came to greater prominence with the advent of digital literature. On the other hand, following Brian T. Edwards (2016), I suggest that the massive circulation of global cultural products, such as Hollywood movies, in the digital age provided a vast representational repertoire for Stittou from which he creatively drew while writing Zohra Liza. To be precise, Hollywood cinema, which is one of the fastest circulating cultural forms globally, found its way into the representational repertoire of Stittou and he creatively incorporates a number of Hollywood films into the fabric of his novel.

The Impact of Digital Technologies on Ensuring Transparency and Minimising Corruption Risks among Public Authorities

Digital technologies are becoming increasingly important for promoting public authorities’ transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption activities. The aim of the research is to analyse the impact of digitalisation on ensuring transparency and minimising corruption risks among public authorities. The study employed correlation analysis and graphical methods for modelling. The results of the analysis established that digital technologies have a significant potential to transform traditional practices towards greater accountability and transparency. Factors determining the effectiveness of digital technologies for increasing transparency are: the level of institutional readiness of authorities, overcoming digital inequality, legal regulation, and the development of information competence. Digital technologies have not yet realised their full potential to ensure systemic transparency of authorities and prevent corruption. A comprehensive approach is important to optimise these processes. Although digital technologies can provide significant transparency, their proper implementation, which lies between technical and social capabilities, has greater potential to enhance transparency, restore public trust, and combat corruption

The Relationship between Supply Chain Resilience and Digital Supply Chain and the Impact on Sustainability: Supply Chain Dynamism as a Moderator

This research aims to explore the complex interplay between supply chain resilience (SCR), digital supply chain (DSC), and sustainability, focusing on the moderating influence of supply chain dynamism. The goal is to understand how these elements interact within the framework of contemporary supply chain management and how they collectively contribute to enhancing sustainability outcomes. The sample size is 300 CEOs and managers. The study approach integrates quantitative research methods. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is utilized to quantitatively analyze the direct and indirect effects of SCR and DSC on sustainability. The numerous surveys we conduct among supply chain ecosystem stakeholders provide a rich picture of practical implications and contextual nuances. In sum, our early findings generally support a positive relationship between SCR and sustainability in and of itself, declaring the need for more resilient supply networks for sustainability. We further find the beneficial impact of digital technologies in promoting sustainability via enhancing environmental control and controlling for efficiency in supply chains. We also offer evidence to show that supply chain dynamism compounds the positive logic between SCR and DSC and sustainability. As a final word, it must be noted that our work speaks to the burgeoning literature on supply chain dynamism as a moderator by examining the direct and contingent effects of SCR and DSC not only on performance but sustainability. By shedding light on the moderating role of dynamism, the study provides fresh insights into the multifaceted nature of supply chain management and sustainability practices. The study’s findings enhance theoretical understanding by elucidating the synergistic effects of SCR, DSC, and sustainability in dynamic supply chain settings. The study augments the existing theoretical frameworks by integrating the concepts of resilience, digitalization, and sustainability into a comprehensive model. Practical and economical, the research offers actionable guidance for organizations aiming to improve sustainability performance through resilient and digitally advanced supply chains. By acknowledging the role of supply chain dynamism, managers can tailor strategies to manage disruptions effectively and leverage digital innovations. Economically, adopting sustainable practices can result in cost savings and competitive advantages. The research emphasizes the importance of aligning supply chain strategies with sustainability goals to drive long-term value and societal impact.

The role of artificial intelligence in building an adaptive educational environment

Purpose: of the article is to study the influence of artificial intelligence on the construction of an adaptive educational environment that takes into account the positive and negative impact of artificial intelligence, as the core of digital technologies, on the well-being of participants in the educational process. Methods: the work uses a complex of theoretical methods, including axiomatic, formalization, abstraction, logical analysis, historical retrospection. The most signifi cant practical research methods include statistical, operationalization and evaluation, comparative analysis. Results: the article provides a statistical substantiation of the demand for artifi cial intelligence in the education. The current educational problems are shown, in solving which it is advisable to use artifi cial intelligence. The article describes the trends in the use of artificial intelligence in the Russian education. The interpretation of the adaptive educational environment is given and the possibilities of using artificial intelligence as a tool for its construction are shown. The logical sequence for constructing an adaptive intelligent teaching system is proposed. The analysis of the impact of digital technologies used in hybrid learning (including artifi cial intelligence) on the well-being of participants in the educational process was carried out. The need for a rational, balanced and cautious approach to the use of artifi cial intelligence in education is emphasized, which gives rise to numerous ethical problems, ignoring which can negatively aff ect the values of education. Conclusions and Relevance: in the context of digitalization of the economy and society, the key technology of which is artifi cial intelligence, education is facing technological challenges that force it to adapt to new operating conditions. The penetration of artifi cial intelligence into the field of education is the pattern of scientific and technological progress that cannot be resisted. The positive aspects and threats of using artificial intelligence in education should be critically assessed, and informed decisions should be made on this basis. Considering the specifics of the educational environment in which the foundation of personality is laid, and the need to preserve the values of education as a factor of cultural progress, priority in goal-setting and the meanings of education should remain with a person whose assistant can be artifi cial intelligence.

The Use of Digital Technologies in Professional Training of Primary School Teachers

The growing significance of digital technologies in society creates a need to train teachers who can use these technologies in the educational process and prepare students for life in the digital world. The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of digital technologies used in professional training of primary school teachers on increasing their professional competence level. The adapted versions of Ferrell &amp; Daniel’s test for Measuring Teacher Career Motivations, the Orshanski’s orientation of future teachers towards humanistic and professional value were used to diagnose the state of development of professional competence. The level of the development of the subject-subjective model of pedagogical communication (modified test based on Sternberg &amp; Williams, Alexander &amp; Winne) and the level of projective skills in primary school teachers were also diagnosed. The students’ performance was assessed based on the results of the examinations. Chi-squared test (χ2) was used for statistical confirmation of the conducted research. Positive dynamics were found in both groups after the formative stage of the experiment. However, the experimental group was noted for greater quantitative and qualitative improvement for the selected criteria. The largest changes were observed for the operational criterion with a difference of 15.40% (against 7.90% in the control group). The cognitive criterion showed the smallest increase: 8.5% in the experimental group compared to 3.4% in the control group. The high general mean showed a difference of 11.22% for the experimental group and 5.1% for the control group. It is also important to note a greater increase in the average indicator at the general level in the experimental group of 52.04% compared to 40.82% in the control group. The differences in the distributions of the control and experimental groups according to the levels of each criterion are statistically reliable and testify to the effectiveness of using digital technologies for the development of professional competence of future primary school teachers. The areas for further research include the analysis of the impact of digital technologies on the development of information literacy skills and critical thinking.

The article is devoted to the consideration of the issue of institutional mortgage housing lending. The structure of the institutional environment of housing mortgage lending, the functions of the institutional environment and the impact of digital technologies on the institutional environment of housing and communal services are considered. At the same time, institutions exist in close interrelationship and influence the development of the economy and society as a whole. The author gives an idea of the impact of technological trends on the institutional environment of housing mortgage lending and concludes that, in particular, the intensification of the use of digital tools in housing and communal services, the development of the ecosystem allows automating the processes of housing and communal services, contributes to their acceleration, increased transparency and accessibility, painlessness, this affects the effectiveness of the functioning of housing and communal services institutions and improves the quality of institutional the environment as a whole.
