Bioinspired Low-Angle-Dependent Photonic Crystal Elastomer for Highly Sensitive Visual Strain Sensor.

Photonic crystals (PCs) possess unique photonic band gap properties that can be used in the field of sensors and smart displays if modulated on the micronano structure. Both nonclose-packed (NCP) structure and high refractive index (RI) contrast of PC play important roles in response sensitivity during stretching. Herein, we constructed an NCP-structured PC strain sensor with high RI by a novel coating-etching strategy. Stretch-induced changes in structural color correspond to the strength of the force, enabling the detection of the strength of the acting force by the naked eye. The flexible 3D cross-linked network constructed by poly(ethylene glycol) phenyl ether acrylate and pentaerythritol tetrakis(3-mercaptopropionate) endows the sensor with excellent elasticity and robustness. The designed PC strain sensor achieves high mechanochromic sensitivity (∼8.3 nm/%, 0.02 to 4.21 MPa) and a substantial reflection peak shift (Δλ = 249 nm). More importantly, the high RI contrast (Δn = 0.43) between CdS and polymers imparts isotropic optical properties, ensuring a broad viewing angle while avoiding misleading signals. The research provides a novel fabrication strategy to construct sensitive PC strain sensors, expanding the prospective applicability to human movement monitoring and secure message encryption.

Large effective length and high efficiency by embedding L-shaped radiating blocks in subwavelength grating slot waveguide

Integrated optical antennas featuring large effective lengths and high radiation efficiency (RE) are essential to chip-scale light detection and ranging technology. However, there are challenges in simultaneously achieving both large effective length and high RE in silicon photonics platforms with high refractive index contrast. For traditional silicon waveguide grating antennas based on silicon photonics, the RE is relatively low and the antenna effective lengths are constrained to several hundred micrometers because of the high refractive index contrast. In this article, an embedded grating waveguide antenna which is L-shaped radiating blocks embedded in the slot gap of a silicon subwavelength grating slot waveguide is proposed and investigated numerically. Simulation results indicate the antenna’s effective length is above 4.25 mm, and the far-field divergence angle is near 0.0197°. Using L-shaped radiation blocks can break the diffraction’s perpendicular symmetry and increase the antenna’s RE to near 0.75 at 1550 nm compared to traditional design. Meanwhile, the antenna’s field-of-view reaches around 17.5° × 48.15° (θ× ϕ) to satisfy the needs of conventional optical phased arrays.

Free-standing microscale photonic lantern spatial mode (De-)multiplexer fabricated using 3D nanoprinting

Photonic lantern (PL) spatial multiplexers show great promise for a range of applications, such as future high-capacity mode division multiplexing (MDM) optical communication networks and free-space optical communication. They enable efficient conversion between multiple single-mode (SM) sources and a multimode (MM) waveguide of the same dimension. PL multiplexers operate by facilitating adiabatic transitions between the SM arrayed space and the single MM space. However, current fabrication methods are forcing the size of these devices to multi-millimeters, making integration with micro-scale photonic systems quite challenging. The advent of 3D micro and nano printing techniques enables the fabrication of freestanding photonic structures with a high refractive index contrast (photopolymer-air). In this work we present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a 6-mode mixing, 375 µm long PL that enables the conversion between six single-mode inputs and a single six-mode waveguide. The PL was designed using a genetic algorithm based inverse design approach and fabricated directly on a 7-core fiber using a commercial two-photon polymerization-based 3D printer and a photopolymer. Although the waveguides exhibit high index contrast, low insertion loss (−2.6 dB), polarization dependent (−0.2 dB) and mode dependent loss (−4.4 dB) were measured.

Solution-Processed One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals Based on Hollow Silica Exhibiting High Refractive Index Contrast.

Poor interfacial quality and low refractive index contrast (Δn) are critical challenges for the development of high-performance one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPhCs) via solution methods that impede their optical efficiency. Herein, we introduce an innovative approach by hybridizing hollow SiO2 with poly(vinyl alcohol), referred to as PHS, followed by alternate assembly with TiO2 via spin-coating, achieving a 1DPhC with Δn = 0.76 at the wavelength of 550 nm. This method circumvents the need for high-temperature treatment and complex curing conditions, resulting in a 1DPhC with superior interfacial and optical characteristics. By adjusting the thickness of the PHS layers, we can finely tune the reflectance spectrum, attaining over 99% reflectance at the photonic band gap. Furthermore, 1DPhC demonstrates excellent adhesion to polycarbonate substrates and retains its optimal optical performance even after rigorous environmental testing, including hygrothermal cycles, exposure to hot water, friction, and solvent sonication. This research paves the way for the facile fabrication of high-performance 1DPhCs under mild conditions, offering new perspectives for photonic material processing.

Fast, Precise, High Contrast Laser Writing for Photonic Chips with Phase Aberrations

AbstractIntegrated photonic chips have significant potential in telecommunications, classic computing, quantum systems, and topological photonics. Direct laser writing offers unique capability for creating three‐dimensional photonic devices in an optical glass chip with quick prototyping. However, it is a challenge for existing laser writing schemes to create index‐modified structures in glass that precisely match the laser focal shape while also achieving high refractive index contrasts and high scanning speeds. Here, we introduce a refractive index modification scheme that combines the advantages of non‐thermal and thermal regime fabrication methods. We also propose a waveguide formation model that is verified through a thorough study on the effects of phase aberrations. The presented new photonic chip fabrication scheme uses a novel focal intensity distribution, where pulse energy is relocated to the bottom of a laser focus by manipulating primary and higher order spherical aberrations. The technique can produce index modifications with high scanning speed (can be 20 mm/s or higher), high index contrast (ranging from 0.009 to 0.021), and high precision to fabricate with arbitrary cross‐sections. This method has potential to expand the capabilities of photonic chips in applications that require small‐scale, high precision, or high contrast refractive index control.

Hot-press melt-assembly anisotropic porous structure with enhanced radiative cooling

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) is a promising and sustainable technology, achieving subambient cooling of objects without electrical consumption. Current PDRC designs realize efficient cooling performance, but their complicated and expensive fabrication approaches remain a challenge. Herein, we present a simple, versatile, and effective morphology control method based on the hot-press melt-assembly approach for fabricating tunable anisotropic porous polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) films with high-efficiency daytime radiative cooling capability. The abundant and disordered micro/nanopores in the PMMA films caused by localized melting and bonding of particles reinforce scattering of the incident sunlight. Apart from the high refractive index contrast between PMMA and air within the porous structure, the dispersed PMMA particles exhibit an apparent micro/nanoplatelet morphology after hot pressing, enhancing the backscattering of sunlight within a porous PMMA film and contributing to the high-performance subambient radiative cooling. Therefore, the porous PMMA film features an ultrahigh solar reflectance of 0.95 and strong mid-infrared thermal emittance of 0.93, allowing for a peak subambient cooling temperature reduction of 9.9 °C under a solar irradiance of 700 W/m2 with an average radiative cooling power of 98 W/m2 during the daytime. Furthermore, the hot-press melt-assembly method is a cost-effective and high-efficient process for fabricating the desirable micro/nanoporous structure, providing a practical and effective pathway toward a large-scale production for excellent passive radiative cooling.

Sb2S3 as a low-loss phase-change material for mid-IR photonics

We study the mid-IR optical properties of Sb2S3 – a phase-change material (PCM) with high potential for mid-IR integrated photonics. We show that Sb2S3 exhibits a high refractive index contrast Δn ≈ 1 between its two phases and an extinction coefficient k below 10−2 at mid-IR wavelengths (up to ∼10 µm). We study the impact of 100 nm Sb2S3 cladding on SiGe-on-Si waveguides and experimentally show that it brings additional propagation loss below 1 dB/cm in the 3.3–3.9 µm wavelength range in both phases. These findings pave the way for new uses of Sb2S3 in mid-IR integrated photonics.

On-Chip Lasers for Silicon Photonics

With the growing trend in the information industry, silicon photonics technology has been explored in both academia and industry and utilized for high-bandwidth data transmission. Thanks to the benefits of silicon, such as high refractive index contrast with its oxides, low loss, substantial thermal–optical effect, and compatibility with CMOS, a range of passive and active photonic devices have been demonstrated, including waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, and lasers. The most challenging aspect remains to be the on-chip laser source, whose performance is constrained by the indirect bandgap of silicon. This review paper highlights the advancements made in the field of integrated laser sources on the silicon photonics platform. These on-chip lasers are classified according to their gain media, including V semiconductors, III–V semiconductors, two-dimensional materials, and colloidal quantum dots. The methods of integrating these lasers onto silicon are also detailed in this review.

Nonlinear Dielectric Epsilon Near‐Zero Hybrid Nanogap Antennas

AbstractHigh‐index Mie‐resonant dielectric nanostructures provide a new framework to manipulate light at the nanoscale. In particular their local field confinement together with their inherently low losses at frequencies below their bandgap energy allows to efficiently boost and control linear and nonlinear optical processes. Here, nanoantennas composed of a thin indium‐tin oxide (ITO) layer in the center of a dielectric gallium phosphide (GaP) nanodisc are investigated. While the linear response is similar to that of a pure GaP nanodisc, it is shown that second harmonic generation is enhanced across a broadband wavelength range. On the other hand, third harmonic generation is only marginally enhanced around the epsilon‐near‐zero wavelength of ITO. Linear and nonlinear finite‐difference time‐domain simulations show that despite the high refractive index contrast leading to strong field confinement inside the antenna's ITO layer, the nanogap enhancement effect is mitigated by the low nonlinear volume of the nanogap layer and the antenna's behavior at the harmonic wavelength. Measurement of ITO and GaP nonlinear susceptibilities additionally show a comparative advantage for harmonic generation in GaP. These investigations deliver insights on the mechanisms at play in nonlinear nanogap antennas and their potential applications as nanoscale devices.

Subwavelength grating waveguide antenna based on interleaved groove structure

Integrated optical antennas are essential components of optical phased arrays for applications in light detection and ranging technology. To achieve larger detection distances, wider detection ranges, and higher scanning resolutions, it is imperative to employ millimeter-scale or longer effective lengths to achieve a narrow beam width, coupled with high radiation efficiency. In the high refractive index contrast silicon photonics platform, achieving a narrow far-field beam width and high radiation efficiency simultaneously is a formidable challenge. In the article, a subwavelength grating waveguide antenna with interleaved grooved lateral radiating block arrays is proposed. The simulation result shows that an effective length of about 3.3 mm is attained, with a corresponding far-field beam width is 0.02°, and a radiation efficiency of 0.785 at the wavelength of 1550 nm. It is also found that the crosstalk between the adjacent grating antennas designed in the range of 1.49 μm ∼ 1.61 μm is less than −15.6 dB.

Inverse design of compact nonvolatile reconfigurable silicon photonic devices with phase-change materials

Abstract In the development of silicon photonics, the continued downsizing of photonic integrated circuits will further increase the integration density, which augments the functionality of photonic chips. Compared with the traditional design method, inverse design presents a novel approach for achieving compact photonic devices. However, achieving compact, reconfigurable photonic devices with the inverse design that employs the traditional modulation method exemplified by the thermo-optic effect poses a significant challenge due to the weak modulation capability. Low-loss phase change materials (PCMs) exemplified by Sb2Se3 are a promising candidate for solving this problem benefiting from their high refractive index contrast. In this work, we first developed a robust inverse design method to realize reconfigurable silicon and phase-change materials hybrid photonic devices including mode converter and optical switch. The mode converter exhibits a broadband operation of >100 nm. The optical switch shows an extinction ratio of >25 dB and a multilevel switching of 41 (>5 bits) by simply changing the crystallinity of Sb2Se3. Here, we experimentally demonstrated a Sb2Se3/Si hybrid integrated optical switch for the first time, wherein routing can be switched by the phase transition of the whole Sb2Se3. Our work provides an effective solution for the design of photonic devices that is insensitive to fabrication errors, thereby paving the way for high integration density in future photonic chips.

Bright and Switchable Whiteness in Macro‐Crosslinked Hydrogels

AbstractBright white color is often achieved in nature by the combination of polydisperse scattering structures and high refractive index contrast between the scatterer and the surrounding medium. Similarly, synthetic systems have commonly utilized inorganic materials as the scattering centers to achieve white color, which, however, lacks the ability to switch the optical properties. While hydrogels capable of scattering light are utilized in applications such as smart windows, their reflection properties have remained limited due to the low refractive index contrast between the polymer and water. As a result, thick layers in the millimeter range are often required to achieve reasonable whiteness. Here a hydrogel consisting of a temperature‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) and chemically modified agarose used as a chemical macro‐crosslinker is presented. The hydrogel exhibits high whiteness at temperatures above the phase transition (≈31 °C). The reflectance at 800 nm is four times as high as for standard PNIPAm, and a change in transmittance can be induced by laser pulses as short as 30 ms. The macro‐crosslinked structure of this hydrogel provides superior reflectance at a lower thickness compared to reported hydrogel systems, enabling a variety of potential applications including smart windows, responsive displays, optical switches, and camouflage.

X-Cut Lithium Niobate Optical Waveguide with High-Index Contrast and Low Loss Fabricated by Vapor Proton Exchange

Highly integrated and stable devices are appealing in optical communication and sensing. This appeal arises from the presence of high refractive index contrast and high-quality waveguides. In this study, we improved the vapor proton exchange (VPE) process, enabling large-scale waveguide fabrication and addressing the issue of liquid exchange during cooling. Additionally, we have prepared and characterized planar waveguides on X-cut lithium niobate (LN) crystals. The exchanged samples exhibit α and k1 phases, refractive index contrasts as high as 0.082, and exceptional refractive index uniformity. Furthermore, we utilized the same process to fabricate channel waveguides and Y-branch waveguides. We achieved low propagation losses in channel waveguides, accompanied by small mode sizes, and low-loss Y-branch waveguides with a highly uniform beam splitting ratio. All waveguides exhibited consistent performance across multiple preparations and tests, remaining free from aging effects for three months. Our results underscore the promising potential of VPE for creating Y-branch splitters and modulators in LN crystals.

Thermally matched chalcogenide glasses with high refractive index contrast for infrared graded‐index lenses

AbstractInfrared graded‐index (GRIN) lenses are desirable for realizing miniaturization and lightweight of infrared imaging systems. Chalcogenide glasses have excellent infrared transparency, good rheological property, and large refractive index range, making them preferred materials for infrared GRIN lenses. In this work, aiming to find thermally matched chalcogenide compositions with high refractive index contrast for preparing GRIN glasses by the stacking diffusion approach, we investigated characteristic temperature, thermal expansion coefficient and refractive index of Ge‐As‐Se and Ge‐As‐Se‐Te glasses, optimized the glass compositions, and evaluated the feasibility of preparing GRIN glass using the optimized chalcogenide glass powders. It is found that Ge20As20Se20Te40 and Ge12As22Se66 glasses have similar softening temperature (247°C vs. 249°C), reasonably difference of thermal expansion coefficient (3.8 ppm/K), and large refractive index contrast (∼.48). The glass powders with composition xGe20As20Se20Te40‐(1‐x) Ge12As22Se66 can be hot‐pressed into glass disks with good transmittance at the same temperature and pressure. Graded refractive index profile is formed near the interface between the layers after the co‐pressed glass is thermally treated. These results demonstrate the prospect of the compositions for preparing infrared GRIN glasses.

Plexcitonic Nanorattles as Highly Efficient SERS-Encoded Tags.

Plexcitonic nanoparticles exhibit strong light-matter interactions, mediated by localized surface plasmon resonances, and thereby promise potential applications in fields such as photonics, solar cells, and sensing, among others. Herein, these light-matter interactions are investigated by UV-visible and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopies, supported by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations. Our results reveal the importance of combining plasmonic nanomaterials and J-aggregates with near-zero-refractive index. As plexcitonic nanostructures nanorattles are employed, based on J-aggregates of the cyanine dye 5,5,6,6-tetrachloro-1,1-diethyl-3,3-bis(4-sulfobutyl)benzimidazolocarbocyanine (TDBC) andplasmonic silver-coated gold nanorods, confined within mesoporous silica shells, which facilitate the adsorption of the J-aggregates onto the metallic nanorod surface, while providing high colloidal stability. Electromagnetic simulations show that the electromagnetic field is strongly confined inside the J-aggregate layer, at wavelengths near the upper plexcitonic mode, but it is damped toward the J-aggregate/water interface at the lower plexcitonic mode. This behavior is ascribed to the sharp variation of dielectric properties of the J-aggregate shell close to the plasmon resonance, which leads to a high opposite refractive index contrast between water and the TDBC shell, at the upper and the lower plexcitonic modes. This behavior is responsible for the high SERS efficiency of the plexcitonic nanorattles under both 633nm and 532nm laser illumination. SERS analysis showed a detection sensitivity down to the single-nanoparticle level and, therefore, an exceptionally high average SERS intensity per particle. These findings may open new opportunities for ultrasensitive biosensing and bioimaging, as superbright and highly stable optical labels based on the strong coupling effect.

All-BN distributed Bragg reflectors fabricated in a single MOCVD process

Distributed Bragg Reflectors (DBR) are well-established photonic structures that are used in many photonic applications. However, most of the DBRs are based on different materials or require post-process etching which can hinder integration with other components in the final photonic structure. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of DBR structures consisting only of undoped boron nitride (BN) layers with high refractive index contrast by using metal–organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). This has been achieved in a single process, without the need for any post-process etching. The difference in the refractive index of the component BN layers stems from different degrees of porosity of the individual BN layers, which is a direct result of a different growth temperature. The fabricated DBR structures consist of 15.5 pairs of BN layers and exhibit a reflectance of 87 ± 1% at the maximum. The wavelength of maximum reflectance can be tuned from 500 nm up to the infrared region (IR), by simply adjusting the growth periods of subsequent BN layers. We also demonstrate that the fabricated structures can be used to create an optical microcavity. The fabricated DBRs are very promising candidates for future applications, for example in combination with single-photon emitters in h-BN, which could allow the building of a cavity-based all-BN single-photon source.

Hybrid laser diode with ultrawide wavelength-tunable range using curved directional couplers.

Wavelength-tunable laser diode with a wide tuning range is required for optical communication systems and optical sensing. External cavity laser diodes with silicon-photonic wire waveguides and ring resonators have small footprint because of high refractive index contrast between Si. However, power coupling efficiency κ of conventional straight directional coupler between ring and bus waveguides have large wavelength dependence, which lowers tunable range. In this study, we demonstrate a hybrid wavelength-tunable laser diode using curved directional couplers, whose wavelength dependence on κ is low. The wavelength-tunable range record of 120.9 nm has been achieved. In addition, curved directional couplers are tolerant of waveguide width fabrication error.

Photonic Crystal Flip-Flops: Recent Developments in All Optical Memory Components.

This paper reviews recent advancements in all-optical memory components, particularly focusing on various types of all-optical flip-flops (FFs) based on photonic crystal (PC) structures proposed in recent years. PCs, with their unique optical properties and engineered structures, including photonic bandgap control, enhanced light-matter interaction, and compact size, make them especially suitable for optical FFs. The study explores three key materials, silicon, chalcogenide glass, and gallium arsenide, known for their high refractive index contrast, compact size, hybrid integration capability, and easy fabrication processes. Furthermore, these materials exhibit excellent compatibility with different technologies like CMOS and fiber optics, enhancing their versatility in various applications. The structures proposed in the research leverage mechanisms such as waveguides, ring resonators, scattering rods, coupling rods, edge rods, switches, resonant cavities, and multi-mode interference. The paper delves into crucial properties and parameters of all-optical FFs, including response time, contrast ratio, and operating wavelength. Optical FFs possess significant advantages, such as high speed, low power consumption, and potential for integration, making them a promising technology for advancing optical computing and optical memory systems.

Influence of Core Type and Shell Thickness on Avian-Inspired Structural Colors Produced from Melanin Nanoparticle Assemblies.

Hollow melanosomes found in iridescent bird feathers, including violet-backed starlings and wild turkeys, enable the generation of diverse structural colors. It has been postulated that the high refractive index (RI) contrast between melanin (1.74) and air (1.0) results in brighter and more saturated colors. This has led to several studies that have synthesized hollow synthetic melanin nanoparticles and fabricated colloidal nanostructures to produce synthetic structural colors. However, these studies use hollow nanoparticles with thin shells (<20 nm), even though shell thicknesses as high as 100 nm have been observed in natural melanosomes. Here, we combine experimental and computational approaches to examine the influence of the varying polydopamine (PDA, synthetic melanin) shell thickness (0-100 nm) and core material on structural colors. Experimentally, a concomitant change in overall particle size and RI contrast makes it difficult to interpret the effect of a hollow or solid core on color. Thus, we utilize finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations to uncover the effect of shell thickness and core on structural colors. Our FDTD results highlight that hollow particles with thin shells have substantially higher saturation than same-sized solid and core-shell particles. These results would benefit a wide range of applications including paints, coatings, and cosmetics.

Quantifying and mitigating optical surface loss in suspended GaAs photonic integrated circuits.

Understanding and mitigating optical loss is critical to the development of high-performance photonic integrated circuits (PICs). In particular, in high refractive index contrast compound semiconductor (III-V) PICs, surface absorption and scattering can be a significant loss mechanism, and needs to be suppressed. Here, we quantify the optical propagation loss due to surface state absorption in a suspended GaAs PIC platform, probe its origins using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry, and show that it can be mitigated by surface passivation using alumina (Al2O3).
