Maternal multivitamin supplementation mitigates the risk of fetal congenital heart disease associated with high indoor total volatile organic compounds exposure in east china: a case-control study

BackgroundCongenital heart disease (CHD) is a common birth defect. Our previous studies suggest that indoor air pollution, especially total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), may increase fetal CHD risk, whereas vitamin and folic acid (FA) supplements in early pregnancy might offer protection against CHD. However, limited research has explored whether FA or multivitamin supplementation can mitigate the effects of TVOCs exposure on CHD.MethodsWe conducted a case-control study to investigate the association between maternal nutrient supplementation, household indoor air pollutant exposure during pregnancy, and CHD in offspring. Pregnant women with 22–30 gestational weeks were recruited from two hospitals in East China between January 2016 and March 2022. A comprehensive approach was used, incorporating questionnaires to collect nutrient supplement information, blood sample analysis to detect serum folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine (HCY) concentrations, and field investigations to assess indoor benzene, toluene, xylene, formaldehyde, and TVOCs exposures. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify CHD risk factors, and stratified analysis was used to evaluate the combined effects of nutrient supplementation and TVOCs on CHD.ResultsThe study included 53 cases and 77 controls. Logistic regression analysis identified high maternal serum HCY (> 6.125 µmol/L) and high household TVOCs exposure (> 0.0165 mg/m³) as risk factors for CHD in offspring, with adjusted odds ratios of 2.98 (95% CI: 1.31–6.36) and 9.23 (95% CI: 3.78–22.53), respectively. Regular multivitamin supplementation mitigated the risk of high TVOCs exposure on fetal CHD, while the adverse effect of high serum HCY-related CHD risk was attenuated in the group with regular FA supplementation.ConclusionExposure to high indoor TVOCs concentrations increases the risk of fetal CHD. Regular multivitamin supplementation may reduce the adverse effects of high TVOCs exposure on fetal CHD.

Investigation of the competitive adsorption mechanism between typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and water vapor in waste gas emissions from the fermentation industry

ABSTRACT The fermentation waste gas, characterized by high humidity and diverse volatile organic compounds (VOCs), poses challenges for adsorption in activated carbon devices. In this study, starch-based activated carbon was used as an adsorbent, targeting typical VOCs from fermentation industries-methyl mercaptan, toluene, and n-hexane. The adsorption behavior of water vapor and VOCs on the carbon interface was analyzed through adsorption experiments, structure characterization, and molecular simulations. Results showed that at 70% RH, the adsorption capacities of toluene and n-hexane experienced a reduction of 42.15% and 59.24% respectively compared to their respective capacities without water vapor at the breakthrough moment, while methyl mercaptan’s capacity increased by 32.29% due to dissolution in condensed water within micropores. Water displaced all three VOCs during multicomponent adsorption. Reducing surface carboxyl groups, pyrrolic-N, and pyridinic-N enhances selective adsorption of VOCs. Among the VOCs, toluene shows the strongest interaction with activated carbon, followed by n-hexane and then methyl mercaptan. However, a water film under high humidity hinders the adsorption of n-hexane and toluene, reducing selectivity. These research findings will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying the absorption of VOCs in high humidity environments by activated carbon.

Chemical Assessment of Real Driving Tire and Road Wear Particles in Urban and Suburban Seoul, Korea

Extensive research about non-exhaust fine particles from tires and brakes in vehicles has been reported, focusing on the significant effects on air pollution and human harm. Significant investigations are still needed in determining the cause of influence on the environment and human health. The regulations on emissions have been discussed in earnest, starting with the introduction of brake wear particle emission standards in Euro 7. Various indoor and outdoor experiments have been conducted, such as analysis of the amount of wear on tires and brakes, and analysis of the physical and chemical properties of fine particles, and the effect of non-exhaust fine wear particles on the atmosphere and human health, as fundamental data for the introduction of emission standards and the development of low-wear tires and brakes to meet regulations. Recently, international standardized indoor experimental methods for brakes have been announced, and indoor and outdoor experimental methods for tires have been continuously studied to develop international standardized methods. In particular, tire and road wear particles, including brake wear particles, are usually mixed with each other in the non-exhaust particles from a vehicle driving on real roads, and in-depth research is being performed on their accurate classification and characteristic analysis. In this study, the characteristics of the volatile organic compounds and marker substances for tire and tire and road wear particles were analyzed. A system was installed on the vehicle to collect non-exhaust wear fine particles from the vehicle running on two different roads, urban and suburban, of the Seoul area, and the proving ground road. The specific findings are as follows: (1) From the chemical analysis of the volatile organic compounds, high n-hexane and n-dodecane were measured in the tire–road-wear particles. (2) The volatile organic compound species in the PM2.5 (aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 µm) increased as the vehicle velocity increased. (3) For the PM10 (aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 µm), high volatile organic compound species were recorded at 40 km/h of the vehicle velocity. (4) This study also revealed that higher vinylcyclohexene and dipentene were measured in the particle size below 10 μm than those in PM2.5.

Identifying effects of volatile organic compounds exposure on kidney stone prevalence in U.S. adults: a cross-sectional analysis of NHANES 2007-2020.

Our aim was to comprehensively investigate the relationship between blood volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and kidney stone prevalence for U.S. adults. In this cross-sectional study, 10,052 participants from the 2007-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Multivariate logistic regression model was employed to investigate the association between 9 blood VOCs and kidney stones. We explored the dose-response relationship between blood VOCs and kidney stones using restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis. Additionally, weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression model was performed to assess the overall association of 9 blood VOCs with kidney stones. Finally, subgroup analyses were conducted to identify the findings in different populations at high prevalence. Logistic regression analysis and dose-response risk curves revealed that blood benzene (aOR = 1.308, 95% CI: 1.118-1.530, P = 0.001), blood ethylbenzene (aOR = 1.280, 95% CI: 1.054-1.554, P = 0.013), blood m-/p-xylene (aOR = 1.187, 95% CI: 1.008-1.398, P = 0.040), blood 2,5-dimethylfuran (aOR = 1.319, 95% CI: 1.135-1.533, P < 0.001) and blood furan (aOR = 1.698, 95% CI: 1.305-2.209, P < 0.001) were positively associated with the prevalence of kidney stones. WQS regression analysis revealed that exposure to mixed blood VOCs was positively correlated with kidney stone prevalence (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.14-1.57), with furans carrying the greatest weight. Subgroup analyses suggested that kidney stones were more susceptible to the effects of blood VOCs in young and middle-aged, female, overweight and obese, non-hypertensive, and non-diabetic populations. In this study, the results indicated that high VOC exposure was positively and independently associated with kidney stones in U.S. adults. This finding highlighted the need for public health strategies to reduce VOC exposure and its role in kidney stone prevention and treatment.

Biocontrol of strawberry Botrytis gray mold and prolong the fruit shelf-life by fumigant Trichoderma spp.

Objectives To screen high active volatile organic compounds (VOCs)-producing Trichoderma isolates against strawberry gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea, and to explore their antagonistic mode of action against the pathogen. VOCs produced by nine Trichoderma isolates (Trichoderma atroviride T1 and T3; Trichoderma harzianum T2, T4 and T5; T6, T7, T8 and T9 identified as Trichoderma asperellum in this work) significantly inhibited the mycelial growth (13.9-63.0% reduction) and conidial germination (17.6-96.3% reduction) of B. cinerea, the highest inhibition percentage belonged to VOCs of T7; in a closed space, VOCs of T7 shared 76.9% and 100% biocontrol efficacy against gray mold on strawberry fruits and detached leaves, respectively, prolonged the fruit shelf-life by 3 days in presence of B. cinerea, completely protected the leaves from B. cinerea infecting; volatile metabolites of T7 damaged the cell membrane permeability and integrity of B. cinerea, thereby inhibiting the mycelial growth and conidial germination. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed the VOCs contain 23 potential compounds, and the majority of these compounds were categorised as alkenes, alcohols, and esters, including PEA and 6PP, which have been reported as substances produced by Trichoderma spp. T. asperellum T7 showed high biofumigant activity against mycelial growth especially conidial germination of B. cinerea and thus protected strawberry fruits and leaves from gray mold, which acted by damaging the pathogen's plasma membrane and resulting in cytoplasm leakage, was a potential biofumigant for controlling pre- and post-harvest strawberry gray mold.

Jasmonic acid and heat stress induce high volatile organic compound emissions in Picea abies from needles, but not from roots.

Plants emit diverse volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from their leaves and roots for protection against biotic and abiotic stress. An important signaling cascade activated by aboveground herbivory is the jasmonic acid (JA) pathway that stimulates the production of VOCs. So far it remains unclear if the activation of this pathway also leads to enhanced VOC emissions from conifer roots, and how the interplay of above- and belowground defenses in plants are affected by multiple stressors. Therefore, we simultaneously analyzed needle and root VOC emissions of Picea abies saplings, as well as CO2 and H2O fluxes in response to aboveground JA treatment, heat stress and their interaction in a controlled climate chamber experiment. Continuous online VOC measurements by PTR-TOF-MS showed an inverse pattern of total needle and root VOC emissions, when plants were treated with JA and heat. While needle sesquiterpene emissions increased nine-fold one day after JA application, total root VOC emissions decreased. This was mainly due to reduced emissions of acetone and monoterpenes by roots. In response to aboveground JA treatment, root total carbon emitted as VOCs decreased from 31% to only 4%. While VOC emissions aboveground increased, net CO2 assimilation strongly declined due to JA treatment, resulting in net respiration during the day. Interestingly, root respiration was not affected by aboveground JA application. Under heat the effect of JA on VOC emissions of needles and roots was less pronounced. The buffering effect of heat on VOC emissions following JA treatment points towards an impaired defense reaction of the plants under multiple stress. Our results indicate efficient resource allocation within the plant to protect threatened tissues by a rather local VOC release. Roots may only be affected indirectly by reduced belowground carbon allocation, but are not involved directly in the JA-induced stress response.

Characteristics of Eco-Friendly Marker Ink by Utilizing Natural Dyes From Noni Leaf Extract (Morinda Citrifolia L.)

Marker ink created from natural ingredients can be used as an alternative to ink with high VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) levels, which can be harmful to one's health. Noni leaf extract includes tannins, which can be utilized as a basic dye/pigment in marker ink. The goal of this study is to use natural dyes derived from noni leaf extract as a replacement for synthetic ink VOC and as an innovation in green marker ink. The study was undertaken with various adjustments, including the inclusion of noni leaf tannins (0.6 gr, 0.8 gr, 1.0 gr, 1.2 gr, 1.4 gr) and gum arabic (4 gr, 5 gr). The analytical findings of the best arker ink products are presented in formula 5, which includes tannins mass 1.4 gr and gum arabic mass 4 gr, with a viscosity of 3.1 cp, density of 1.14 g/ml, pH 6, and concentrated pigment production. Based on these findings, marker ink products fulfill the quality standards of the SNI 06-1567-1999 test.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission interferes with real-time regulatory monitoring of ozone in urban atmosphere

Ozone (O3) pollution is a global concern. The real-time ultraviolet (UV) photometric method is commonly employed at the majority of O3 regulatory monitoring stations around the world. High concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been confirmed to interfere with the real-time O3 monitoring by this method. However, it is unknown whether VOCs emission in the urban environment has an impact on the O3 regulatory monitoring. Here we revealed that high VOCs concentration in an urban industrial zone may result in positive artifacts in O3 measurement at a nearby atmospheric monitoring station. These VOCs were dominated by styrene with concentrations at a mg/m3 level, which was closely related to the abnormally higher O3 measurements observed in this station at night. Experimental validation confirmed that benzene homologues could induce evidently O3 measurement artifacts by the regulatory UV photometric method. By equipped with a temperature control system for the O3 measurement scrubber to desorb VOCs adsorbed by O3 the scrubbing catalyst, the O3 measurement artifacts showed an effective decline with a maximum of 30 ppb in the field cases. This study shed light on the improvement of the air quality assessment by coordination of the monitoring stations and approaches in the future.

Advective and diffusive gas phase transport in vadose zones: Importance for defining vapour risks and natural source zone depletion of petroleum hydrocarbons

Quantifying the interlinked behaviour of the soil microbiome, fluid flow, multi-component transport and partitioning, and biodegradation is key to characterising vapour risks and natural source zone depletion (NSZD) of light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) petroleum hydrocarbons. Critical to vapour transport and NSZD is transport of gases through the vadose zone (oxygen from the atmosphere, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), methane and carbon dioxide from the zone of LNAPL biodegradation). Volatilisation of VOCs from LNAPL, aerobic biodegradation, methanogenesis and heat production all generate gas pressure changes that may lead to enhanced gas fluxes apart from diffusion. Despite the importance of the gaseous phase dynamics in the vadose zone processes, the relative pressure changes and consequent scales of advective (buoyancy and pressure driven) / diffusive transport is less studied. We use a validated multi-phase multi-component non-isothermal modelling framework to differentiate gas transport mechanisms. We simulate a multicomponent unweathered gasoline LNAPL with high VOC content to maximise the potential for pressure changes due to volatilisation and to enable the joint effects of methanogenesis and shallower aerobic biodegradation of vapours to be assessed, along with heat production. Considering a uniform fine sand profile with LNAPL resident in the water table capillary zone, results suggest that biodegradation plays the key role in gas phase formation and consequent pressure build-up. Results suggest that advection is the main transport mechanism over a thin zone inside the LNAPL/capillary region, where the effective gaseous diffusion is very low. In the bulk of the vadose zone above the LNAPL region, the pressure change is minimal, and gaseous diffusion is dominant. Even for high biodegradation rate cases, pressure build-up due to heat generation (inducing buoyancy effects) is smaller than the contribution of gas formation due to biodegradation. The findings are critical to support broader assumptions of diffusive transport being dominant in vapour transport and NSZD assessments.

Innovative CF/PVC Foam Applicated for Automotive Synthetic Leather with High-Performance and Reduced VOC Emissions.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) foam, valued for its mechanical and thermal properties along with cost-effectiveness, is extensively utilized across diverse industries. However, its high volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions hinder its adoption in eco-friendly synthetic leather. This study proposes a solution by optimizing the formulation design and foaming processes and achieving mechanical property enhancement via carbon-fiber-reinforced PVC composite foam (CF/PVC). The aim is to reduce PVC usage via enhancing its intrinsic properties. Systematic investigations were carried out on the impact of foaming raw materials, foaming processes, fiber content, and fiber length on the foaming performance, mechanical properties, and VOC emissions. The material formulation and process parameters were successfully optimized. Further assessment of various indicators such as the density, mechanical properties, and tear resistance of synthetic leather samples confirmed that the innovative CF/PVC foam developed in this study meets the requirements for automotive interior applications. Notably, the tensile strength and tear resistance of CF/PVC composite synthetic leather increased by 50% and 29%, respectively, compared to pure PVC, while VOC emissions decreased by 28%. It is anticipated that a more pronounced reduction in VOC emissions will be achieved in practical automotive interior leather applications when further considering the reinforcing effect of fibers, which leads to a reduction in PVC usage. The findings present a technical reference for innovative applications, aiming to enhance PVC foam performance and minimize emissions.

Reactive aldehyde chemistry explains the missing source of hydroxyl radicals

Hydroxyl radicals (OH) determine the tropospheric self-cleansing capacity, thus regulating air quality and climate. However, the state-of-the-art mechanisms still underestimate OH at low nitrogen oxide and high volatile organic compound regimes even considering the latest isoprene chemistry. Here we propose that the reactive aldehyde chemistry, especially the autoxidation of carbonyl organic peroxy radicals (R(CO)O2) derived from higher aldehydes, is a noteworthy OH regeneration mechanism that overwhelms the contribution of the isoprene autoxidation, the latter has been proved to largely contribute to the missing OH source under high isoprene condition. As diagnosed by the quantum chemical calculations, the R(CO)O2 radicals undergo fast H-migration to produce unsaturated hydroperoxyl-carbonyls that generate OH through rapid photolysis. This chemistry could explain almost all unknown OH sources in areas rich in both natural and anthropogenic emissions in the warm seasons, and may increasingly impact the global self-cleansing capacity in a future low nitrogen oxide society under carbon neutrality scenarios.

Inverted core–shell structured hollow particles for improved volatile organic compounds removal and photocatalytic regeneration

As the amount of time people spend indoors increases, the impact of indoor air quality on health has become more important, and numerous studies have been conducted to eliminate indoor air pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Among the several methods for removing VOCs, the adsorption is the most widely used in that it requires a simple mechanism and low energy, but has a limitation in that it is difficult to regenerate after saturation. In order to solve this problem, composite materials combining adsorbents and photocatalysts have been developed, but there is still an issue that the photocatalytic activity can be lowered by covering the surface of the photocatalyst with the adsorbent. Here, mesoporous carbon/silica/titania double shell hollow nanoparticles (MC/SiO2/TiO2 HNPs) are prepared through etching, calcination and carbonization of polystyrene/polyacrylonitrile/SiO2/TiO2 multi-layered core/shell nanoparticles. Attributed to the high specific surface area of the MC/SiO2/TiO2 HNPs, high VOCs adsorption efficiency can be achieved. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity can be maximized since the TiO2 shell is exposed to the surface without any covering materials.

Establishment and verification of anthropogenic speciated VOCs emission inventory of Central China

Improving the accuracy of anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission inventory is crucial for reducing atmospheric pollution and formulating control policy of air pollution. In this study, an anthropogenic speciated VOCs emission inventory was established for Central China represented by Henan Province at a 3 km × 3 km spatial resolution based on the emission factor method. The 2019 VOCs emission in Henan Province was 1003.5 Gg, while industrial process source (33.7%) was the highest emission source, Zhengzhou (17.9%) was the city with highest emission and April and August were the months with the more emissions. High VOCs emission regions were concentrated in downtown areas and industrial parks. Alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons were the main VOCs contribution groups. The species composition, source contribution and spatial distribution were verified and evaluated through tracer ratio method (TR), Positive Matrix Factorization Model (PMF) and remote sensing inversion (RSI). Results show that both the emission results by emission inventory (EI) (15.7 Gg) and by TR method (13.6 Gg) and source contribution by EI and PMF are familiar. The spatial distribution of HCHO primary emission based on RSI is basically consistent with that of HCHO emission based on EI with a R-value of 0.73. The verification results show that the VOCs emission inventory and speciated emission inventory established in this study are relatively reliable.

Species profile of volatile organic compounds emission and health risk assessment from typical indoor events in daycare centers

Daycare centers (DCCs) play an instrumental role in early childhood development, making them a significant indoor environment for a large number of children globally. Amidst routine DCC activities, young children are exposed to a myriad of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), potentially impacting their health. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the VOC emissions during typical DCCs activities and evaluate respective health risk assessments. Employing a full-scale experimental setup within a well-controlled climate chamber, research was conducted into VOC emissions during three typical DCC events: arts-and-crafts (painting, gluing, modeling), cleaning, and sleeping activities tied to mattresses. The research identified 96 distinct VOCs, grouped into twelve categories, from 20 different events examined. Each event exhibited a unique VOC fingerprint, pinpointing potential source tracers. Also, significant variations in VOC emissions from different events were demonstrated. For instance, under cool & dry conditions, acrylic painting recorded high total VOC concentrations of 808 μg/m3, whereas poster painting showed only 58 μg/m3. Given these disparities, the study emphasizes the critical need for carefully selecting arts-and-crafts materials and cleaning agents in DCCs to effectively reduce VOC exposure. It suggests ventilating new mattresses before use and regular mattress check-ups to mitigate VOCs exposure during naps. Importantly, it revealed that certain events resulted in VOC levels exceeding the 10−5 cancer risk thresholds for younger children. Specifically, tetrachloroethylene and styrene from used mattresses in cool & dry conditions, ethylene oxide from new mattresses in warm & humid conditions, and styrene, during sand modeling in both conditions, were the key compounds contributing to this risk. These findings highlight the critical need for age-specific health risk assessments in DCCs. This study highlights the significance of understanding the profiles of VOC emissions from indoor events in DCCs, emphasizing potential health implications and laying a solid foundation for future investigations in this field.

An eco‐friendly and high shear strength adhesive from catechol‐modified polyethyleneimine

AbstractConventional adhesives often emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have a negative impact on human health. In this paper, an environmentally‐friendly supramolecular adhesive PD which has high adhesive and low VOCs emission is prepared by the reaction between polyethyleneimine (PEI) and 3,4‐dihydroxybenzaldehyde (DBA). PD containing abundant catechol groups exhibit excellent adhesion to wood substrates and is able to reach a maximum shear strength of 5.20 ± 0.39 MPa. One factor is attributed to multiple reactions between PEI, and DBA and oxidation of DBA. These reactions construct a complex three‐dimensional cross‐linked structure which is very helpful to improve the bonding performance of the adhesive. Another reason refers to the fact that a large number of catechol groups in PD can form a lot of hydrogen bonds with the amino group in PEI and the hydroxyl group in the wood substrate. These hydrogen bonds play an important role in enhancing shear strength. PD adhesives have a stronger bond strength than commercial chloroprene rubber (CR, Pattex‐PXL) and polyvinyl acetate adhesives (PVAc, JUJU‐8708) and have lower emissions of VOCs. As an environmentally‐friendly adhesive for wood‐based substrates, this adhesive may have potential applications in the wood processing industry.

Daily Exposure to Environmental Volatile Organic Compounds Triggers Oxidative Damage: Evidence from a Large-Scale Survey in China.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants and have been implicated in adverse health outcomes. In this study, concentrations of 11 VOC metabolites (mVOCs) and three oxidative stress biomarkers (8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine, 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-guanosine, and dityrosine) were determined in 205 urine samples collected from 12 cities across mainland China. Urinary ∑11mVOC concentrations ranged from 498 to 1660 ng/mL, with a geometric mean (GM) value of 1070 ng/mL. The factorial analysis revealed that cooking, solvents, and vehicle emissions were the three primary sources of VOC exposure. A significant regional variation was clearly found in ∑11mVOC concentrations across four regions in China, with high urine VOC concentrations found in North and South China (GM: 1450 and 1340 ng/mL). The multiple linear regression model revealed that most mVOCs were significantly positively correlated with three oxidative stress markers (β range: 0.06-0.22). Mixture effect regression showed that isoprene, crotonaldehyde, acrolein, and benzene were the strongest contributors to oxidative stress. Approximately 80% of the participants have HQ values greater than 1.0 for 1,3-butadiene and benzene, suggesting that their exposure doses were close to potential adverse health effects. Our findings provide comprehensive information on human exposure and potential health risks of VOCs in China.

Effects of driving conditions on aerosol formation from photooxidation of gasoline vehicles exhaust in Hong Kong

The emissions before and after atmospheric oxidation from three gasoline vehicles were characterized under different driving conditions (idling, cruising and New European Driving Cycle (NEDC)). The total quantified volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission factors for the vehicles ranged from 18.4 to 2728.7 mg/kg depending on driving conditions. The organic aerosol mass concentrations showed substantial increase (∼7.6–10.8 times) after ageing process, implying that vehicular emissions were an important source of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). The total quantified organic aerosol mass concentrations in aged samples ranged from 77.7 to 480.5 ng m−3 under different test conditions. Aromatic and alkenoic acids were identified as major organic aerosols after ageing. The emission factors of VOCs were higher under idling condition compared to the other driving modes for all vehicles. High VOCs emissions can potentially lead to high secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation inside the reactor and more robust SOA formation under idling condition in all analysis. The gasoline direct injection (GDI) vehicle with latest year of manufacture in EURO 4 standard can pose lower primary emissions of organic substances, but nevertheless the composition of emitted VOCs demonstrates higher SOA yield and SOA formation. Further analysis proposes engine type is the key factor on primary VOC composition under idling. The findings suggest a need to revise existing regulation of composition of organic substances.

High-resolution mapping of regional VOCs using the enhanced space-time extreme gradient boosting machine (XGBoost) in Shanghai

The accurate estimation of highly spatiotemporal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of great significance to establish advanced early warning systems and regulate air pollution control. However, the estimation of high spatiotemporal VOCs remains incomplete. Here, the space-time extreme gradient boost model (STXGB) was enhanced by integrating spatiotemporal information to obtain the spatial resolution and overall accuracy of VOCs. To this end, meteorological, topographical and pollutant emissions, was input to the STXGB model, and regional hourly 300 m VOCs maps for 2020 in Shanghai were produced. Our results show that the STXGB model achieve good hourly VOCs estimations performance (R2 = 0.73). A further analysis of SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) regression indicate that local interpretations of the STXGB models demonstrate the strong contribution of emissions on mapping VOCs estimations, while acknowledging the important contribution of space and time term. The proposed approach outperforms many traditional machine learning models with a lower computational burden in terms of speed and memory.

Spatiotemporal distribution, source apportionment and health risk assessment of atmospheric volatile organic compounds using passive air samplers in a typical coastal area, China

To fully understand source characteristics and human health effects of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs), it is of great importance to implement long-term measurements, precise source apportionment and simulation. In this study, a 12-month measurement of VOCs was conducted in a coastal area in East China by a novel passive air sampler (PAS). A total of 28 VOC species, mainly in groups of aromatics and halohydrocarbons were observed. The monthly average concentrations of TVOC were as follows: industrial sites (154.10–727.19 μg m−3) > business sites (65.83–86.96 μg m−3) > residential sites (59.63–60.05 μg m−3) > background site (57.62 μg m−3). Their seasonal variation characteristics were: winter > spring > autumn > summer, which was more apparent at industrial sites due to human activities. Six VOC sources including industrial processes, organic solvents, dyeing, plastic synthesis, traffic emissions, and pesticides identified by the positive matrix factorization model compared favorably with the local emissions at industrial sites. Bromoform, hexachloro-1,3-butadiene, C1–C3 halogenated alkanes and benzene homologs could be the important indicators of industrial VOC emissions. The halohydrocarbons and aromatics were the major contributors to the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol potential (SOAP) in industrial areas, respectively. Both of OFP and SOAP have their maximum values in winter due to high VOC concentrations. Health risk assessment indicated that a high probability of non-carcinogenic risk (HI > 1) was in the region at 10 m height and 50m radius, and minor carcinogenic risk (CR > 10−6) was in the region at 70 m height and 1000 m radius. Among all the compounds, 1,2-Dibromo-3-chloropropane was the largest contributor with the individual HI value (17.99) and carcinogenic risk (5.34 × 10−3) at the peak. In this study, the PAS as a sampling tool was proven to be reliable and efficient for long-term measurements in coastal areas. It is worth to have further studies to promote passive sampling as an alternative to VOCs monitoring methods.

Abundant oxygenated volatile organic compounds and their contribution to photochemical pollution in subtropical Hong Kong

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are ubiquitous pollutants in the urban and regional atmosphere, promote the formation of ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosols, thereby significantly affecting the air quality and human health. The ambient VOCs at a coastal suburban site in Hong Kong were continuously measured using proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) from November 2020 to December 2020. 83 VOC species, including 23 CxHy, 53 CxHyO1-3, and 7 nitrogen-containing species, were measured during the campaign, with a mean concentration of 36.75 ppb. Oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) accounted for most (77.4%) of the measured species, including CxHyO1 (50.7%) and CxHyO2 (25.1%). The measured VOC species exhibited distinct temporal and diurnal variations. High concentrations of isoprene and OVOCs were measured in autumn with more active photochemistry, whereas large evening peaks of aromatics from local and regional primary emissions were prominent in winter. The OH reactivity and O3 formation potential (OFP) of key precursors were quantified. OVOCs contributed about half of the total OH reactivity and OFP, followed by alkenes and aromatics, and the contribution of aromatics increased significantly in winter. The potential source contribution function was used to investigate the potential source regions associated with high VOC concentrations. Through positive matrix factorization analysis, six major sources were identified based on fingerprint molecules. The contributions of biogenic sources and secondary formation to the observed species were notable in late autumn, whereas vehicle emissions and solid fuel combustion had higher contributions in winter. The findings highlight the important role of OVOCs in photochemical pollution and provide valuable insights for the development of effective pollution control strategies.
