Technical vocational students’ higher learning institution preference and level of academic and skills preparedness

Vocational education is increasingly recognized for its role in creating gainful employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth. As such, this paper studied the higher learning institution preferences of the technical vocational students and their academic and skills readiness. Specifically, this study focused on the senior high school students enrolled in the technical and vocational livelihood track at Buruanga Vocational School and their regards on the growing importance of vocational education in job creation and national support. Utilizing a descriptive-correlational research design, this research examined the relationship between academic performance, skills preparedness, and higher learning institution preference 50 purposively selected completers as grounded on Vocational Identify Theory to understand how students perceived different career alternatives. Each student responded to self-report survey questionnaire that revealed academic preparedness and interest in various institutions. The results demonstrated a significant relationship between their readiness and preference for the institution. Additionally, the graduates indicated that their performance and literal understanding were lacking compared to their academic track. Hence, the outcomes confirmed that schools need to check their program levels and outreach and plan to offer higher-level services like the high school career guidance programs. The results provide hallmark-witted assortment preparations for strengthening undergraduates for high-level activities, thus preparing vocational schooling to attain a degree.

[Objective] This study aims to determine whether the motivation for choosing a major affects the satisfaction with major decisions after entering university. Additionally, it seeks to understand perceptions of new academic systems designed to increase satisfaction. [Contents] This study analyzed whether the motivation for selecting a major before enrollment influences the desired major decision. In addition, it is intended to analyze the factors affecting the satisfaction of major decision after admission, and to suggest the direction of education policy after understanding the recognition of the introduction of a new academic system to operate it effectively. [Conclusions] The conclusion of this study is as follows. First, the intrinsic factors (aptitude and interest, dream realization) of major selection before entering college were higher than the extrinsic factors (employment outlook, grades). Second, it was confirmed that the satisfaction with major decision after entering college affects the satisfaction with major decision in the order of the connection between college major and employment, the relationship between college major and career, high school career education, and university field. Finally, it was said that ‘support for opportunities to experience various studies’ is the most necessary for matters to be considered at the university level in relation to the operation of the new school system, and as a problem, there are concerns about ‘the phenomenon of concentration on popular departments’ and ‘difficulty in managing students related to major decision’. Based on these results, implications and suggestions for follow-up research were presented in relation to college student’s major decision and career education.

The goal of this study was to develop of online career content for third-year middle school students who utilize the A Company platform, which is used by learners who specialize in corporate education within the S Corporation group. This content, which has been underway since April 2023, investigates the possibility of creating web-based materials for middle school career education. The study explores the value of career education at this point because of the growing importance of online content for career education as a result of digital transformation (DX) and the effects of COVID-19, especially in light of the impending decisions that third-year middle school students will make regarding their high school enrollment and career paths. To develop the online content for third-year middle school students, the study reviewed both the 2015 revised curriculum direction and the 2022 revised direction. The analysis included a review of the themes in the middle school [Career and Occupation] textbooks, extracting key topics and essential learning elements. Based on the findings, lesson plans and content development were carried out. The development process included designing a prototype based on content development strategies and stage-specific learning strategies. The developed prototype underwent quality reviews from academic experts and professionals in the field. As consequently, the study's conclusions included research findings as well as recommendations for developing career education content for young people that take the changing labor market into account.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to adapt the Student Career Construction Inventory (SCCI) developed by Savickas et al. (2018) into Korean and validate it with Korean high school students.
 Methods: Data were collected from 713 high school students enrolled in general education high schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, and the data were analyzed using item content analysis, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and quasi-test of validity.
 Results: As a result of item content analysis and exploratory factor analysis, the Korean High School Career Constructs Inventory (K-SCCI) was structured into four factors: Crystallizing a vocational self-concept, exploring occupations, making decisions, and preparing. A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to verify the goodness of fit of the four-factor model, and a correlation analysis with career adapting was conducted to verify its validity.
 Conclusion: The Korean High School Student Career Construct Inventory (K-SCCI), which was validated in this study for Korean high school students in the humanities, consists of 18 items with four sub-variables: Crystallizing a vocational self-concept, exploring occupations, making decisions, and preparing.

고교학점제 운영에 있어 진로전담교사의 직무역량지원을 위한 요구분석 진로지도 및 상담직무 중심으로

Purpose: The high school credit system, which is a customized curriculum for each student that
 values the career design and growth of each student, is expected to be fully implemented in general
 high schools from 2025. These institutional changes in secondary education mean that it is necessary
 to prepare for the establishment and transformation of teachers and school management systems.
 Therefore, this study aimed to redefine the job competencies of high school and middle school career
 teachers in the operation of the high school credit system and analyze the educational needs necessary
 for job performance.
 Methods: The results of 242 career teachers in middle and high school were analyzed. Priority needs
 were derived by systematically and comprehensively applying the Borich demand analysis and The
 Locus for Focus model analysis to 39 'career guidance and counseling' performance capabilities.
 Results: As a result of the study, counseling for undecided students and counseling for students with
 low career motivation were the top educational needs of middle and high school career teachers. For
 middle school career teachers, instruction, and counseling for selecting subjects suitable for students'
 careers and aptitudes, and counseling for career advancement according to future jobs and social changes
 were the top educational needs, while for general high school career teachers, instruction, and counseling
 to ensure career connection between middle and high school were the top educational needs. For
 all middle and high school career teachers, the ability to prepare academic plans, counseling for
 undecided students, career-linked counseling for middle and high school students, and counseling for
 students with low career motivation were the top educational demands.
 Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it was suggested to provide programs to strengthen
 high-demand job competencies, provide new education every year for jobs that want to increase
 professionalism, establish an education system suitable for each annual level, and systemize career
 counseling records management linking middle and high schools.

특성화고 예비신입생 및 학부모의 고교 진학 준비과정 분석: 서울 지역을 중심으로

The purpose of this study is to explore ways to improve vocational high school admissions support. Accordingly, in order to analyze the experiences of vocational high school students in the high school preparation process, a survey was conducted targeting vocational high school freshmen and their parents. The main results of the study are as follows.
 First, many students considered their career path and aptitude at the stage of deciding to go on to vocational high school, and some were concerned about society's negative views. Second, awareness of the support policy for university admissions to vocational high schools was high, but awareness of other support policies was found to be low. Third, the motivation for entering vocational high school was often consistent with the purpose of establishing vocational high schools, there were some students who decided to enroll because of their grades or college admission. Fourth, in the case of vocational high school admission and career guidance, middle school and vocational high school teachers were found to be of great help, but satisfaction with middle schools career guidance was relatively low. Fifth, in terms of vocational high school admission information, the need for continuous provision of information and the difficulty in collecting specific information for major or admission preparation were confirmed. Based on the research results, improvement methods were presented to communicate a consistent message to create a positive image of vocational high schools, strengthen advancement and career guidance training for middle school and vocational high school teachers, provide specific major information for admission support.

일자리 만족도 변화에 대한 영향요인 탐색: 고등학교 졸업자의 진로역량을 중심으로

Based on the data of the Korea Education and Employment Panel Ⅱ(KEEP2), from 2020 to 2022, this study explores how job satisfaction changes over time and how high school career guidance and career-related activities affect to the current job satisfaction and its trajectory of change. The data were analyzed using Latent Growth Curve Modeling (LGCM).
 The main findings of this study are as follows. First, during the study period, job satisfaction showed a linear trajectory of change that decreased over time. Second, among the career-related activities experienced in high school, the experience of career activities, and the career maturity were found to influence job satisfaction. Participation in career clubs and positive career attitudes were associated with higher initial job satisfaction, and experience in creative experiences was associated with higher job satisfaction over time. Third, after controlling for independent variables that change over time, such as current work environment and job satisfaction, career education satisfaction made higher increase in job satisfaction. Also, the type of highschool showed different job satisfaction and its trajectory over time. Specifically, the graduates from Meister schools and Specialized schools showed lower job satisfaction and it decreased sharply compared to other types of highschool. These results implied the career guidance in highschool stage should be focused to offer the actual experiences to the job, workplace, and labor market. Also, it is time for prepare policies, systems, and programs for competency development of the younger employees to encourage their royalty to the workplace and make them long-term employees.

잠재프로파일을 적용한 직업계고 학생들의 진로개발역량과 자기주도학습역량에 대한 잠재집단분류 및 영향요인 검증

The purpose of the study is to estimate the latent classes of vocational high school career development competencies and self-directed learning also, individual and school factors determining these latent profiles. To this end, we used data from the "2022 Career Education Status Survey" of 1,363 students, including (804 male and 559 female students). Based on the latent profile modeling analysis, we identified three distinct latent classes of students' career development competencies and self-directed learning. These classes were named ‘low-level group,’ ‘intermediate-level group,’ and ‘high-level group.’ Second, multinominal logistic regression analysis revealed that gender, career activity participation satisfaction, need for career information, conversation with parents, career information awareness, desired career preparation and learning motivation were significant predictors of the latent profiles at the individual-level. Also, perception of the principal's perception of career education support, career teacher's job performance, and the number of career experience operations were derived as predictive factors that distinguish the potential class was significant predictors of the latent profiles at the school-level. Implications of this study and suggestions for follow-up research were discussed.

GRAY FOR A DAY: A SIMULATION ACTIVITY IMPACTS PARTICIPANTS IN COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH EDUCATION

Abstract Nearly 80% of older adults own their own homes; approximately two-thirds live within 25 miles of relatives; and most prefer to age-in-place, without access to geriatric-specific care. They rely on primary care clinics and family, friends, and other local support to meet their health needs. The healthcare workforce and lay public need to better understand age-related functional decline. Simulation activities can increase one’s understanding of new concepts or perspectives. One such activity, “Gray for a Day,” offers a didactic presentation and simulations of functional decline. In 2022, 10 Mississippi State University Cooperative Extension agents offered the “Gray for a Day” training to 550 individuals across 35 sessions in community colleges, high school career and technical education classes, and hospitals and nursing home food service departments. Participant evaluations were collected to assess learning outcomes and empathy development. Process evaluation data and descriptive statistics are reported. Nearly all (98%) of the participants reported increases in knowledge of age-related sensory and functional decline and increases in understanding how age-related sensory and functional decline can impact one’s daily life; and 95% reported an increase in considering how they can better interact with older adults experiencing functional decline. Understanding challenges facing older adults is essential to empathy and important both in a home environment and in the workplace. The “Gray for a Day” simulation activity is feasible for implementation in multiple settings and has the potential to increase knowledge, understanding, and possibly empathy for older adults experiencing functional decline.

고등학생의 진로⋅학업 설계 역량 신장을 위한 진로집중학기 교수⋅학습 지원 모형 개발 연구

Objectives The purpose of this study is to explore a support model in terms of teaching and learning to enhance the career and academic design capabilities of general high school students in the career intensive semester of the first year of high school. Methods To this end, a Delphi survey was conducted twice via online on 30 school education majors with more than 5 years of experience with a high understanding of the high school credit system and career intensive semester to validate and modify the model. Results Through this, this study developed a teaching and learning support model. 1) A model, principle, and detailed guideline for designing and evaluating career intensive semesters. 2) A model and principle for designing and conducting curriculum/creative experience activities in career intensive semesters. Conclusions Through this, it is expected that career and academic design guidance can be provided integrally and organically with the aim of enhancing learners' career and academic design capabilities in the career intensive semester.

고등학교 진로지도 경력교사의 첫 중학교 진로전담교사 직무 수행에 관한 내러티브 탐구

Objectives This study was carried out with the purpose of in-depth exploration of the job performance process of a high school career guidance career teacher who was performing the job of a career guidance teacher in middle school for the first time.
 Methods Data were collected, interpreted, and analyzed through the narrative inquiry method. Beginning middle school career teachers who have been in charge of high school career guidance for more than 10 years were selected and went through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and local data collection for about a year. We analyzed how to solve it.
 Results Participants in the study experienced confusion in identity by performing numerous career experience- oriented jobs in an unfamiliar and lonely environment without background knowledge of middle school career education. In the process, he continued to work with teachers to carry out professional career counseling, understanding the characteristics of middle schools that mixed the needs for experience-oriented career education and career design, and setting up a middle school career education plan in a larger framework.
 Conclusions Based on these research results, it suggested training middle and high school career teachers, dualization of incumbent training courses, job demands of career teachers and policy support suitable for school sites, and education on school career curriculum design competency.

Linkage Between Fields of Focus in High School Career Technical Education and College Majors

This study examines the extent to which students obtain postsecondary credentials in the career technical education (CTE) fields of focus they choose in high school. Using school fixed-effects models, we find that focusing on a particular CTE field in high school is associated with an increased probability of enrolling and obtaining a postsecondary credential in that field. The secondary–postsecondary relationship varies across focus areas, and it is strongest in health (increase of 12.5 percentage points), which is disproportionately chosen by females. Across all fields of focus, however, most students enroll and obtain a postsecondary credential in fields that are different from what they focused on in high school.

One of the developmental tasks of students, especially high school students, is the readiness of students to organize the future. Therefore, students need the right career plan so that students can choose a career according to their strengths and talent interests. Guidance and counseling as an integral part of the school whose purpose is to provide support and assistance to the student in the face of his developmental tasks. In career planning, there are two influencing factors. Namely in the form of internal factors (within the self) and external factors (outside the self). High school career guidance should be able to guide each student through developmental tasks in the direction of career development and direct students towards creativity and implementation of a set of options and plans to be established. This research is intended to describe the role of guidance and counseling services in the career selection of high school students.

The value of informal learning within work‐based learning: The economic benefits of WBL

AbstractRecent updates to federal policy governing career and technical education (CTE) in the United States have emphasised the need to include work‐based learning (WBL) experiences as central components of CTE programming. Many of these experiences showcase an informal learning component which has strong ties to early career success as suggested by the Human Capital Theory. This study explores the following questions: What is the relationship between WBL and early career income? Are there differential relationships based on the type of WBL experience? The Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS) includes nationally representative data for student participation in WBL and early career income. We used school‐fixed effects and propensity score matching techniques to respond to our questions regarding the potential relationship between WBL participation and early career income. We found that students who participated in at least one WBL experience in high school could expect to have an average 7% higher income compared to non‐WBL participants. With respect to specific WBL experiences, job shadowing, community service, and mentoring had the largest positive relationship to higher early career income. Findings from this study indicate that participation in WBL experiences can have a positive impact on a high school graduate's college and career readiness as measured through early career income. Given the differential relationships observed for different types of WBL, schools, policymakers, and students should explore WBL options that best align with their personal goals.

AbstractSTEM technician and technologist careers can be accessible options for students; however, the historical devaluing of technical careers combined with a lack of awareness and familiarity with the specific options within this career cluster have resulted in a shortage of trained and prepared professionals. Grounded in social cognitive career theory, this survey study explores college students' knowledge of technical STEM careers, their high school career exploration experiences, and the relationship between science interest, career decision‐making, and technical career knowledge. Results from this survey indicate there is little to no familiarity with the majority of the STEM technician and technologist careers presented. However, results also show students are engaging in career exploration, and many are using more than one resource for exploration in their high school years. Implications for school counselors, teachers, family members, and community members are presented to specifically address the noted concerns.

The Effects of High School Career and Technical Education on Employment, Wages, and Educational Attainment

I investigate the effects of high school career and technical education (CTE) on later-life outcomes by constructing a dynamic structural model that instruments for curricula choice using variation in CTE opportunities and local labor market controls. Estimates derived from national longitudinal data suggest that trade CTE, relative to general education and business CTE, improves wages and employment opportunities while increasing high school graduation but decreasing university graduation propensities. Policy simulations suggest that incorporating vocational certification into CTE would improve labor market outcomes. Simulations also suggest that strict high school tracking would increase the dropout rate but improve outcomes for graduates at the expense of their high school utility.

His family often joked that despite his PhD, working in a polymer reactor plant connecting pipes and actuating valves was not so far from that early prediction. Roger had a productive 30-year career at Exxon’s polymer division, eventually being named an ACS Hero of Chemistry for his work on viscosity modifiers for engine oil. He enjoyed a second career as a patent searcher. Outside of work, Roger was a steadfast family man who also loved to sing, taste wine, and study languages—including French and Mandarin.
