Assesment of Quality Management Practice on High-Rise Building, the Case of Banking and Insurance Companies in Addis Ababa

This research focuses on the assessment of quality management practices within the context of constructing high-rise buildings, with a particular emphasis on buildings designated as headquarters for banking and insurance companies in Addis Ababa. The objective of this study is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the various factors that contribute to the successful execution of complex construction projects in this domain. Employing a hybrid research approach that combines both qualitative and quantitative methods, the investigation explores a range of aspects related to quality assurance, monitoring, evaluation, and regulatory oversight. The study explores the impact of inadequate quality management on the overall quality, structural integrity, and safety of high-rise buildings. It also identifies barriers and challenges in implementing quality management practices, as well as performance indicators and metrics for assessing the effectiveness of quality control measures. Additionally, the research delves into monitoring construction activities for compliance with quality control measures and ensuring quality standards for materials used in high-rise construction. Furthermore, it discusses quality benchmarks, standards, and the monitoring and evaluation of quality assurance measures implementation within organizations, including policies and procedures specific to high-rise building projects. Through interviews with various stakeholders, this study aims to provide valuable insights into enhancing the quality management processes in high-rise construction projects, ultimately contributing to the advancement of building safety and integrity in urban environments. Building upon these insights, the research concludes by presenting a series of strategic recommendations designed to enhance quality management practices in high-rise building construction projects. These recommendations span multiple dimensions, including strengthening regulatory oversight, implementing integrated quality assurance policies, establishing comprehensive monitoring and evaluation frameworks, defining quality benchmarks and performance metrics, ensuring robust materials quality control.

Understanding the correlates of construction safety of high-rise buildings: A Bayesian perspective

Safety in high-rise building construction is a critical concern, particularly in the densely populated urban areas of Vietnam. Understanding the complex interplay of factors influencing safety on construction sites is essential for reducing accidents and enhancing overall project outcomes. This study aims to identify and analyze key factors impacting safety in high-rise construction projects. Utilizing Bayesian Poisson Regression, the research investigates the relationship between various safety-related factors and the occurrence of non-fatal accidents. The study adopts a comprehensive approach, selecting potential safety factors from the existing literature and developing a rating system validated by site safety managers. Data were collected from 48 high-rise buildingprojects in Vietnam, constructed between 2019 and 2022. Bayesian Poisson Regression was employed to analyze the impact of 15 variables on safety outcomes, including management commitment, worker participation,training programs, emergency preparedness, and safety inspections. The findings underscore the multifacetednature of construction safety and the need for a holistic approach that involves strong safety training, engagedmanagement and workers, protective measures, and proactive safety audits. This research provides actionableinsights for practitioners and contributes to the academic discourse on construction safety, emphasizing theutility of Bayesian methods in unraveling complex safety dynamics in high-rise construction.

Investigation on the Nature of Safety Rule Violations in High-Rise Construction Projects

The construction sector has consistently demonstrated a greater risk of fatal and non-fatal occupational accidents than other economic sectors, particularly with respect to high-rise building construction projects. Despite searing progress in the regulatory domain, and progressive formulation of new safety agenda for the industry, the truth is safety incidences involving fatalities and injuries still perpetuate with varying degrees of intensity. This is further aggravated by the loss of vital project resources of materials, equipment, and labours, which is counter-productive, unsustainable, and occasionally polluting. What is abundantly clear is that human factor when dealing with safety intricacies and observation still plays a considerable role in determining key safety objective accomplishment. With that in mind, it was the aims of this study to delve deeper into this issue among practitioners at the forefront of the high-rise building construction works in Malaysia. Specifically, it investigates, analyses, and ranks the degree of severity of the safety rule violation repercussion, the frequency, and perpetrators. A questionnaire survey approach was devised and distributed to respondents from among the developers, consultants, contractors, and relevant authorities. The data collected were analysed using SPSS package by determining the average index, standard deviation, variance, and frequency analysis. The results have shown that the lack of fire protection was perceived to lead to the most severe repercussion, while the lack of risky, near-miss, accident reporting, and the lack of Logout or Tagout (LOTO) procedures during servicing and maintenance activities were the most frequent safety rule violations. In addition, the contractor party was the most regular offender of the safety regulations, understandably by virtue of numbers. In conclusion, these outcomes could facilitate safety authorities and professionals in devising pragmatic schemes that best utilize both the persuasive and punitive mitigation measures for better safety outcomes.

Identification and Ranking of Factors Affecting the Delay Risk of High-Rise Construction Projects Using AHP and VIKOR Methods

Construction projects, especially those for commercial purposes, require thorough planning and control to ensure success within predetermined budgets and timelines. This research, conducted in Mashhad, Iran, employs the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and VIKOR methods to identify and rank factors influencing delays in high-rise projects. The study, based on a sample of 40 projects, emphasizes the comprehensive nature of our research method. The scale for features in project selection includes societal importance (with different applications including cultural hubs, affordable housing initiatives, and urban renewal for social equity), size (less and more than 20 units in residential projects), and diversity (mixed-use development, inclusive infrastructure, and cultural and recreational spaces), contributing to a comprehensive analysis of construction delays. Expert project managers and engineers provided insights through two questionnaires, and their responses underwent thorough analysis. Our findings not only underscore the significance of factors contributing to project success but also rank their impact on the likelihood of delays. The study reveals that the negative effects of these factors on cost, time, and project quality vary. Time emerges as the most influential parameter, with approximately six times more impact on cost and nine times more on quality. Contractor financial weakness, delays in allocating financial and credit resources, insufficient project resource allocation, contractor technical and executive weakness, and a lack of proper implementation and project control are identified as the most important factors contributing to delays.

Development of workplace well-being indexes at construction sites

Purpose This study aims to develop workplace well-being indexes for construction sites of different project types (infrastructure, high-rise and low-rise). Accordingly, the study objectives are to identify the critical factors that affect workplace well-being at construction sites, compare the critical factors between different project types, categorize the critical factors into subgroups and compute indexes for the critical factors and subgroups. Design/methodology/approach Data from a systematic literature review and semi-structured interviews with construction industry professionals were used to extract 19 potential factors that affect workplace well-being. Then, a structured questionnaire survey was distributed, and 169 valid responses were collected. Finally, the data were analyzed using normalized mean analysis, agreement analysis, factor analysis and fuzzy synthetic evaluation. Findings The study findings revealed that there are 11, 11, 8 and 12 critical factors across overall infrastructure, high-rise and low-rise construction projects. Out of those, six critical factors are overlapping across project types, including “general safety and health monitoring,” “salary package,” “timeline of salary payment,” “working hours,” “communication between workers” and “planning of the project.” Accordingly, the critical factors can be categorized into two subgroups within each project type. Finally, the development of indexes shows that infrastructure construction projects have the greatest index compared to other project types. Originality/value This study contributes to filling the current knowledge gap by developing workplace well-being indexes at construction sites across different project types. The indexes would assist decision-makers in understanding the current state of workplace well-being. This increases the commitment and recognition of well-being across different construction project types.

A practical approach of partial striking technique in high-rise buildings

PurposeThis research proposes a viable method of slab and shore load computation for the partial striking technique utilized in high-rise construction projects to optimize the use of horizontal formwork. The proposed Partial Striking Simplified Method (PSSM) is designed to be utilized by industry practitioners to schedule the construction operations of casting floors in order to control the formwork costs incurred throughout the completion of a project.Design/methodology/approachThe article presents the PSSM for calculating slab and shore loads in multi-story building construction. It introduces the concept of “clearing before striking,” where shore supports are partially removed after a few days of pouring fresh concrete. The PSSM procedure is validated through numerical analysis and compared to other simplified approaches. Additionally, a user-friendly Python program based on the PSSM procedure is developed to explore the capability of the PSSM procedure and is used to study the variations in slab load, shoring level, concrete grade and cycle time.FindingsThe study successfully developed a more efficient and reliable method for estimating the loads on shores and slabs using partial striking techniques for multi-story building construction. Compared to other simplified approaches, the PSSM procedure is simpler and more precise, as demonstrated through numerical analysis. The mean of shore and slab load ratios are 1.08 and 1.07, respectively, which seems to have a slight standard deviation of 0.29 and 0.21 with 3D numerical analysis. The Python program developed for load estimation is effective in exploring the capability of the proposed PSSM procedure. The Python program's ability to identify the floor under maximum load and determine the specific construction stage provides valuable insights for multi-story construction, enabling informed decision-making and optimization of construction methods.Practical implicationsHigh-rise construction in Indian cities is booming, though this trend is not shared by all the country's major metropolitan areas. The growing construction sector in urban cities demands rapid construction for efficient utilization of formwork to control the construction costs of project. The proposed procedure is the best option to optimize the formwork construction cost, construction cycle time, the suitable formwork system with optimum cost, concrete grade for the adopted level of shoring in partaking and many more.Originality/valueThe proposed PSSM reduces the calculation complexity of the existing simplified method. This is done by considering the identical slab stiffness and identical shore layout for uniform load distribution throughout the structure. This procedure utilizes a two-step load distribution calculation for clearing phase. Initially, the 66% prop load of highest floor level is distributed uniformly over the lower interconnected slabs. In the second step, the total prop load is removed equally from all slabs below it. This makes the load distribution user-friendly for the industry expert.

Utilization Of Drones as A Tool For Monitoring Progress In Civil Engineering Construction Using Enugu State As A Case Study

The hazardous nature of the Nigerian building construction sector is alarming due to the dearth of construction data and records of incidents that have led to the loss of life, property damage, injuries, and loss of materials on construction sites This study aims to assess the effectiveness of drone monitoring of security and safety at Nigerian building sites in reducing hazardous site conditions. The following hypotheses were made to meet the study's goal and objective to assess the level of drones using Enugu State in Nigeria as a case study. The Methodology includes a literature survey and questionnaires at various sites. 242 people responded to the survey. To assess the constraints of employing quadcopters and other drones/UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) for safety and security surveillance on construction sites in Enugu State, Nigeria. Inventive drones and the DJI Phantom 3 Standard Both types of drones were used in this experiment. The targeted experts and stakeholders included architects, builders, engineers, quantity surveyors, land surveyors, estate surveyors, and clients. The data were analyzed using the SPSS computer program for Windows, version 23.0. Only 65 per cent of respondents were aware of the drone idea, although 51 per cent of respondents used drones in various construction monitoring sectors. The adoption rate of 17.6% for safety and security monitoring, however, was deemed low by participants in the Enugu State building construction sector. Drones have been successfully used in developed countries such as America, Europe, China, Australia, and India, to monitor safety and security as well as the progress of both large-scale and high-rise construction projects. As a tool for monitoring the security and safety of all building phases, drones are still in their infancy from the Nigerian perspective. The successful use of drones in Nigeria is encouraged since realistic imagery generated from drones may be used for analysis and evaluation of ongoing construction work, including planning movement on site and monitoring materials on site and may be archived for future purposes

Evaluation of Factors of Design Change, Material Availability and Labor Productivity Against Cost Performance on Office Building Projects

Good cost performance will result in profit margins for the company, but on the contrary, poor cost performance will certainly result in cost overruns. And this is often and even always the case with every project, both in construction projects and office building projects. Several factors can influence the decline in cost performance so that there is a cost overrun, such as design changes, material availability, work improvements, poor labor relations, incomplete project documents, increase in material prices, labor, equipment, project finances, and project implementation time. With the various causes of decreased cost performance, this research will limit the analysis of factors such as changes in design, material availability and labor productivity, which are indeed very frequent in construction projects, especially in office building projects. Office building projects are not as large as high-rise construction projects or other civil projects, but in terms of the complexity of detailed types of work, it is often a boomerang for cost overruns. This study used a statistical analysis approach using an SPSS device based on questionnaire data for implementing contractors in Jakarta.

A Novel Safety Risk Assessment Based on Fuzzy Set Theory and Decision Methods in High-Rise Buildings

The high-rise construction industry has particular features, such as prolonged construction periods and constant change in the workplace. These features may have turned it into the most dangerous industry, given its significant mortality rate. This research aims to identify effective criteria for high-rise buildings’ safety issues and rank the most critical risks to level up the safety of these projects. This research is divided into two phases: In Phase I, the effective criteria in the literature on the occurrence of accidents are divided into three main classes, and their weights are determined using the best–worst method. In Phase II, the existing risks are ranked using the fuzzy Vlse Kriterijumska Optimizacija Kompromisno Resenje (FUZZY VIKOR) method. The results indicate that safety training and monitoring, which account for approximately 35% of the total weight, are the most influential criteria for risk occurrence. The risk of falling from heights has been ranked first as the most critical safety risk according to the eight criteria, including safety training and monitoring. The total weight of criteria in which falling from height attains the first rank equals 0.688. Damages caused by working with manual tools and equipment have the highest priority in four criteria, and the total weight of 0.1591 attains the second rank. The results of this research comply with the current situation of the construction industry and pave the way for future research on high-rise construction projects.

Numerical Simulation of Soil Displacement and Settlement in Deep Foundation Pit Excavations Near Water

Advancing urbanization in China requires large-scale high-rise construction and underground transportation projects. Consequently, there is an increasing number of deep foundation pits adjacent to water bodies, and accidents occur frequently. This study uses a numerical simulation method to study the stability of the deep foundation pit near water based on the Biot three-dimensional seepage-stress coupling model, with the open-cut section on the south bank of the Jinan Yellow River Tunnel Project as the engineering field test. This indicates the following: (1) the maximum horizontal displacement of the diaphragm wall occurred in the fifth excavation stage, and a horizontal brace effectively controlled the inward horizontal displacement of the foundation pit; (2) considering the effect of seepage in the soft soil foundation, the maximum vertical displacement of the ground surface at each excavation stage occurred adjacent to the underground continuous wall. As the depth of the foundation pit increased, the vertical surface settlement decreases gradually in the direction away from the excavation face; (3) considering the seepage conditions, within each interval of excavation of the foundation pit, the horizontal displacement of the continuous underground wall and ground settlement declined; and (4) the numerical simulation and field monitoring data were in good agreement. Under the conditions of accurate model simplification and parameter selection, numerical simulations can adequately forecast conditions of the actual project.

Quantitative assessment of the impacts of BIM and lean on process and operations flow in construction projects

PurposeThe study aims to test, measure and quantify the impacts of lean construction and BIM implementation on flow in construction projects.Design/methodology/approachDetailed control data from a set of 18 high-rise residential construction projects executed between years 2011 and 2020 were analyzed using the construction flow index (CFI), a measure of workflow quality. Seven comparable projects with a diverse range of LPS, BIM, VDC and 5S implementation were selected to compare the impacts of these innovations on flow.FindingsImplementing BIM in the big room and applying the last planner system and other lean construction techniques increased the CFI from 4.31 to 8.12 (on a 10-point scale). Avoiding trades crossing one another's paths between tasks was the most significant aspect of improved flow. Moreover, the benefits of implementing lean practices with BIM or VDC were found to be measurably greater than when these approaches were implemented separately.Research limitations/implicationsThe primary limitation of the study is that the degree of confidence in the results is limited by the nature of the case study approach. Although 18 is a respectable number of case study projects, it cannot offer the degree of confidence that a broader, representative sample of projects could. Similarly, the case studies are all drawn from the same construction context (residential apartments) and the same geographic region, which necessarily limits confidence concerning the degree to which the findings can be generalized.Originality/valueThe research is the first of its kind to quantitatively assess the impacts of BIM and lean construction on flow. Use of the CFI to quantify flow quality also highlights the potential value of CFI in providing project managers and planners a clear view of the smoothness or irregularity of flow and of differences between subcontractors' production rates.

THE FRAMEWORK FOR EFFECTIVE SAFETY CONTROL AND IMPLEMENTATION AT CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

The Construction industry enhanced the growth of socio-economic of country as well as providing the necessary infrastructure and enhanced facilities for social comfort. However, it is stigmatized as the most hazardous industries due to high occupational risks and unsatisfactory state of occupational safety. Therefore, this study evaluates the factors affecting the successful implementation of safety control practices in construction project through structured questionnaire and case study of high rise construction project. The statistical techniques including Relative Importance Index (RII) and Average Index (AVI) are used to analyse the data gathered, while the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) is used to measure the Spearman’s rank correlation between four different groups of respondents, the Cronbach’s alpha (reliability test) and validity of the study. The high impact factors identified are then validated with the case study on contractors’ practitioners’ practices. Based on the highest impact factors identified, a framework of safety control management was proposed to improve the safety performance at construction project. The study concludes with the conclusion on the data obtained and recommendation for the improvement, thus more valid and reliable results can be obtained for the implementation of safety control practices in construction project.

In Malaysia, construction industry plays an important role in benefitting towards the development of country’s economy as well as providing the necessary infrastructure and enhanced facilities for social comfort. Despite these contributions, this thriving industry is responsible for generating an excessive amount of construction waste and numerous cases on delaying which then tarnish the reputation of the company. Therefore, this study evaluates the factors affecting the implementation of quality management system practices in construction project through the application of structured questionnaire and case study of high rise construction project to come out with a structured framework that can enhance the quality management system in construction project. The statistical techniques used to evaluate the data obtained are relative importance index (RII) and Average Index (AVI), while cronbach’s alpha is used to measure the significant between three different groups of respondents, the reliability and validity of the study.

UAV Integration in Current Construction Safety Planning and Monitoring Processes: Case Study of a High-Rise Building Construction Project in Chile

The majority of construction fatalities and accidents in Chile occur in high-rise building construction projects that also suffer from an insufficient number of safety managers on-site. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and their generated aerial visual contents have the potential to help the limited number of safety managers in such projects to quickly and properly inspect the inaccessible, hard-to-reach, or unsafe locations on the site and to enhance their safety assessment of those projects. In this study, a case study approach was adopted to investigate how UAV technology and their generated aerial visual contents might affect the current approach of conducting safety planning and monitoring in a high-rise building construction site in Chile with a limited number of safety managers. The case study involved three steps: (1) understanding the current safety planning and monitoring process in a high-rise construction project, (2) investigating how UAV-related tasks and generated visual contents could be integrated into the current process, and (3) assessment of how such UAV integration might affect the current safety planning and monitoring process. The outcome of the case study provided a detailed overview of the new steps required to integrate UAVs in the current safety planning and monitoring process and concluded that adoption of UAV technology had enhanced identification and assessment of hazards in the high-rise project. Hazards associated with unsafe acts and conditions at height (e.g., missing guardrails or safety nets around unprotected edges or openings and loose or unsecured material at height) were the most common types of hazards identified using the UAV in this case study. Safety managers in the project also rated aerial videos captured by the UAV as the most useful type of data for their safety planning and monitoring tasks. The UAV also significantly reduced the amount of time required for safety managers to conduct their site visit walkthroughs on the project site.

Environmentally friendly building materials for residential high-rise construction

Materials, products and systems used as finishing of external surfaces and/or interior rooms when erecting or reconstructing buildings and structures should: protect the person in the room finished with these materials from the pathogenic effects of materials, products and building systems; if possible, do not exert pathological physiological and/or activity loads on people carrying out production or life activities in rooms finished with these materials and/or equipped with products and systems. As a result of the research, it was found that the source of 80% of the chemicals found in the air environment of the apartments is used construction and finishing materials. Currently, the quality of raw materials for building materials and the building materials and structures themselves are determined by GOST and Technical Specifications. A civil engineer is required to correctly select a material, product, or structure that has sufficient strength, reliability, and durability for specific conditions. Safe in themselves, finishing materials, products, and systems in the composition can acquire and demonstrate new properties. Therefore, the study of this problem is an urgent task of the near future and one of the directions of construction anthropotechnology, in particular, when implementing high-rise construction projects.

Study on Steel Bar Construction Technology of Frameshear Wall in High-Rise Buildings

The development of the construction sector is rapidly growing, which induce competition at global level. In order to achieve the current economic development, more high-rise buildings construction projects were commenced without considering importance of the land to human and other living organism. On the other hand, the quality and safety aspect of the engineering technology used must be analyzed carefully and to be the primary aim for engineers to reduce any risk of harm in future. Many of the high-rise buildings in China consist of a frame or skeleton of reinforced concrete wall which need to bestrengthened with shear walls to improve the stability and safety of the structures. According to practical work experience and relevant theoretical knowledge, the researcher introduced the reinforcement construction technology of frame-shear wall for high-rise buildings in depth from aspects like the arrangement of steel bar, construction preparation, steel bar anchorage, precautions to follow for the related work in future.

Mathematical model to optimally solve the lift planning problem in high-rise construction projects

Abstract The availability of resources such as workforce and materials at each level of a high-rise construction project just before the commencement of building tasks is a crucial issue that might have direct impacts on project progress. To avoid delays caused by lack of human resources and construction materials, a construction management team always tries to find a better way to facilitate supply chain process specifically for construction projects facing a significant number of simultaneous and repetitive tasks. The other challenge in a high-rise construction project is vertical transportation that requires special machinery e.g. cranes or lifts, and also, maximizing their utilities. In this paper, it is tried to automate vertical transportation planning process in high-rise construction projects by introducing a platform that handles the entire lifting process. This platform considers (i) tasks attributes (e.g. required resources, location and commencement time) from the project schedule, (ii) lifting system specifications (e.g. travel speed, weight, and volume capacity) and (iii) project geometrics (e.g. current height of the project). In details, the introduced platform provides an optimized daily delivery plan by developing a Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) model that covers workforce and construction materials. In this paper, the proposed platform is also tested using field data obtained from a 34-story construction project in Mashhad, Iran. The model could find a solution with 0% optimality gap in approximately 1 h, which is an acceptable amount of computational cost for the problem. The results show how the introduced platform can assist the construction management team to efficiently handle the supply process within stories while avoiding delays caused by a lack of resources required for each task.

Investigation on the Factors Influencing Construction Time and Cost Overrun for High-Rise Building Projects In Penang

Time and cost overruns have become one prominent issue for most construction projects around the world. Project costing and timeframe extension had been causing a lot of wastage and loss of opportunity for many parties involved. Therefore, this research was carried out to investigate the factors influencing time and cost overruns for high-rise construction projects in Penang, Malaysia. A set of questionnaires survey was distributed to the project managers who had been or currently involved in the high-rise building projects in Penang to get their input and perceptions for each factor identified as well as its frequency of occurrence. In order to rank all the factors gathered, the mean index of the most distinguishing factors and its frequency of occurrence were multiplied to get the severity index. The results revealed that for time overrun, the most predominant causes were due to design changes, inadequate planning and scheduling and poor labor productivity. Meanwhile, the predominant causes of cost overrun were poor pre-construction budget and material cost planning, inaccurate quantity take-off and materials cost increased by inflation. The significance of establishing the issues related to time and cost overruns for the high-rise building construction project is to provide a greater insight and understanding on the causes of delays, particularly among the main project players: contractors, client, and consultants.
