Non-preoxidation synthesis of MXene integrated flexible carbon film for supercapacitors

Although the flexible carbon film integrated with MXene has been proven to be a new generation of supercapacitor material with good energy storage prospects, the MXene oxidation and the lack of active sites during the preparation of the carbon film can lead to irreversible capacity loss. Herein, a flexible carbon film constructed by MXene-integrated N-doped cavity-interconnected porous carbon nanofibers was prepared by a non-pre-oxidation synthesis strategy combining electrospinning and metal–organic framework derivatization. This flexible carbon film overcomes the oxidation problem of MXene during the stabilization of polyacrylonitrile, and the derived porous structure of cavity interconnection exposes more active sites. Due to its unique structural characteristics and ideal chemical composition, this independent flexible carbon film exhibits significantly enhanced electrochemical performance as an electrode material for supercapacitors. It exhibits an energy density of 26.2 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 500 W kg−1, and a capacitance retention rate of 96.3 % after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles. This study provides a unique strategy for the preparation of high-performance flexible carbon films, and this technology can also be extended to other integrated CNF composites for the design of high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Synthesis, characterization, and synergistic effects of CuS/MnO2 nanocomposite electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors

Metal oxides, metal sulfides, and their derivatives exhibit impressive electrochemical capabilities, offering potential for the creation of novel electrodes with superior performance in supercapacitors. In this study, we introduce a novel binary composite consisting of copper sulfide and manganese oxide (CuS/MnO2). This composite is designed with specific CuS and MnO2 ratios (80 % and 20 %, respectively) to explore their electrochemical behavior and optimize the performance of these nanostructures. According to morphological and structural analysis, it was observed that the synthesis process yielded high-purity nanoparticles and nanorods of CuS and MnO2. Notably, no byproducts were detected, indicating a successful synthesis process. Through a rapid pseudocapacitive charge storage mechanism, the electrochemical investigations reveal that all electrodes in a three-electrode setup tested in 3 M KOH electrolyte solution and the novel CuS/MnO2 electrode exhibit typical capacitive behavior in the potential of 0.0–0.5 V, with good reversibility and charge storage properties (specific capacitance: 451 F g−1, low resistance: 1.21 Ω, cyclic stability: 98.33 % at 4 A g−1 continuously 2000 cycles). Surprisingly, the CuS/MnO2 nanocomposite (NC) exposed high power density is about 1997 W kg−1 and a maximum energy density of 28.19 W h kg−1exceptionally is achieved. The significance of additional transition metal oxide-based electrodes in achieving noticeably better performance is demonstrated by these results.

Ti3C2Tx MXene/reduced graphene oxide/cellulose nanocrystal-coated cotton fabric electrodes for supercapacitor applications

Textile-based electrodes are the most important components of wearable and portable supercapacitors. Ti3C2Tx MXene and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have a great potential for the fabrication of high-performance textile supercapacitor electrodes. In this work, rGO was synthesized with the presence of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and Ti3C2Tx/rGO/CNC dispersions with different rGO/CNC contents were prepared. The plain-woven cotton fabrics were coated by homogenous Ti3C2Tx and Ti3C2Tx/rGO/CNC dispersions (5% wt., 15% wt., 30% wt. and 50% wt. rGO/CNC content) and characterized by X-ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy techniques. The electrochemical characterization techniques showed that Ti3C2Tx/rGO/CNC loaded fabric electrodes up to 15 wt.% rGO/CNC content exhibited a high specific capacitance of 501.1 F g−1 at a current density of 0.3 A g−1 with low internal electrode resistance, and a good electrochemical stability. The results also showed that MXene/rGO/CNC based high-performance textile supercapacitor electrodes can be prepared by simple drop-casting method.Graphical

Oxidative MnO2 Template Assisted Electrochemical Fabrication of Graphene/Polypyrrole Supercapacitor Electrodes.

Improving the morphological structure of active materials is a reliable strategy for the fabrication of high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. In this study, we introduce a feasible approach to constructing the graphene/polypyrrole (PPy) composite film implanted onto the current collector through a two-step electrochemical deposition method utilizing MnO2 as an intermediary template. The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hydrogel film is first hydrothermally grown on a carbon cloth (CC) substrate to obtain a porous rGO@CC electrode on which MnO2 is electrodeposited. Then the as-prepared rGO/MnO2@CC electrode is subjected to the electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole, with MnO2 acting as an oxidizing template to facilitate the oxidative polymerization of pyrrole, ultimately yielding an rGO/PPy composite film on CC. The PPy synthesized via this methodology exhibits a distinctive interconnected structure, resulting in superior electrochemical performance compared with the electrode with PPy directly electrodeposited on rGO@CC. The optimized electrode achieves an impressive specific capacitance of 583.6 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and retains 83% of its capacitance at 20 A g-1, with a capacitance loss of only 9.5% after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. The corresponding all-solid-state supercapacitor could provide a high energy density of 22.5 Wh kg-1 and a power density of 4.6 kW kg-1, with a capacitance retention of 82.7% after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. Furthermore, the device also demonstrates good flexibility performance upon bending at 90 and 180°. This work presents an innovative method for the preparation of carbon material/conducting polymer electrodes with specific structural characteristics and superior performance.

A sustainable solution: Conversion of distillers' grains waste into high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials for energy storage applications

The development of cost-effective biomass-derived carbon with good electrochemical properties is crucial for advancing energy storage devices sustainably. One feasible approach to producing supercapacitor electrode materials is the conversion of heteroatom-rich biomass waste into heteroatom self-doped hierarchical porous carbons with favorable electrochemical properties. In this study, distillers' grains with abundant crude fiber and protein were utilized as precursors to prepare N, S self-doped hierarchical porous carbon, which presents a high specific surface area of 3642.87 m2 g−1. The N, S doping could improve the interfacial wettability of electrode materials and enhance the pseudocapacitive effect of the materials. In three-electrode system, the carbon delivered a high capacitance of 347 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. Symmetrical capacitors assembled with PVA/KOH gel electrolytes delivered an ultrahigh energy density of 11.29 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 250 W kg−1. This strategy provides a practical, low-cost, and renewable design approach of carbon electrode for high-performance supercapacitors.

Palladium enhanced electrochemical supercapacitive performance of chromium oxide thin films synthesized by sputtering process

Recently, the use of transition metal oxide electrodes for supercapacitor applications has increased due to the possibility of variable mixed valence states. The present study has established the use of Pd-Cr2O3 composite thin films as a working electrode for high-performance supercapacitors. The reactive dc magnetron co-sputtering method has been used for the fabrication of thin film of Cr2O3 and Pd-Cr2O3 on SS-304 substrate. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy techniques were used to examine the surface chemistry and phase purity of chromium oxide and Pd-Cr2O3 composite thin films. The incorporation of Pd in Cr2O3 delivers a drastic change in the surface morphology. Due to the modified morphology and electronic properties, a noticeable improvement in the electrochemical properties of Pd-Cr2O3 electrode is observed. The obtained value of specific capacitance for this electrode is 401 Fg−1 at 0.1 mAcm−2 scan rate and within the potential window range 0 to +1.2 V. This value of specific capacitance is almost twice in comparison to the Cr2O3 based electrode. The Pd-Cr2O3 composite thin film shows a good cycle retention capability of 8000 cycles with 87.5 % retention. The obtained value of energy density and power density for Pd-Cr2O3 electrode was 80.2 Whkg−1 and 3.23 kWkg−1, respectively at 0.1 mAcm−2. Consequently, this composite material electrode can be seen as a promising advancement for electrodes in supercapacitor devices.

Nanostructured binary transition-metal-sulfides and nanocomposites as high-performance electrodes for hybrid supercapacitors

Supercapacitors (SCs) are attractive as promising energy storage devices because of their distinctive attributes, such as high power density, good current charge/discharge ability, excellent cyclic stability, reasonable safety, and low cost. Electrode materials play key roles in achieving excellent performance of these SCs. Among them, binary transition metal sulfides (BTMSs) have received significant attention, attributed to their high conductivity, abundant active sites, and excellent electrochemical properties. This topic review aims to summarize recent advances in principles, design, and evaluation of the electrochemical performance for nanostructured BTMSs (including nickel–cobalt sulfides, zinc–cobalt sulfides, and copper–cobalt sulfides.) and their nanocomposites (including those carbon nanomaterials, transition metal oxides, binary transition metal oxides, transition metal sulfides, and polymers). Nanostructuring of these BTMSs and nanocomposites as well as their effects on the performance were discussed, including nanoparticles, nanospheres, nanosheets, nanowires, nanorods, nanotubes, nanoarrays, and hierarchitectured nanostructures. Their electrochemical performance has further been reviewed including specific capacitance, conductivity, rate capability, and cycling stability. In addition, the performance of hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs) assembled using the nanostructured BTMSs as the cathodes also have been summarized and compared. Finally, challenges and further prospects in the HSCs-based BTMS electrodes are presented.

Highly conductive titanium nitride core sterically reinforced nickel-vanadium layered double hydroxides for supercapacitors

Nickel vanadium layered double hydroxide (NiV-LDH) is a highly promising electrode material for supercapacitors, but its poor electrochemical durability and conductivity limit its capacitance performance as a high-performance supercapacitor electrode. In contrast, titanium nitride (TiN) stands out for its outstanding electrochemical durability and superior conductivity. In this work, a composite material (TiN@NiV-LDH) with outstanding electrochemical performance was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method, where nickel vanadium layered double hydroxide nanosheets were vertically grown in a staggered manner on the surface of amorphous titanium nitride nanoparticles. The results demonstrate that at a current density of 2 A g−1, the capacitance of TiN@NiV-LDH reaches 712.4 F g−1. In addition, the assembled TiN@NiV-LDH//AC asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits a high energy density of 136.5 Wh kg−1 at a high power density of 1549.9 W kg−1, and after 10,000 cycles at a high current density of 20 A g−1, it retains 80.2 % excellent cyclic stability. This work, based on nickel vanadium layered double hydroxide and utilizing titanium nitride modification, aims to enhance the long-term stability of nickel vanadium layered double hydroxide while preserving its advantageous properties, providing a promising strategy for designing efficient supercapacitor electrodes.

Cocoa husk as precursor of carbonaceous materials for supercapacitors electrodes

Activated carbon materials are widely used as high-performance electrodes for supercapacitors because they allow improving the electrochemical performance of these devices. The development of high surface areas and high porosity contributes to the energy storage by double electric layer, whereas the content of different functional groups on their surface to the pseudocapacitive storage. In addition, they can be obtained from lignocellulosic wastes providing a novel and economic perspective for the development of carbon-based electrodes. In this work, activated carbons were synthesized from cocoa husks using KOH as activating agent. The materials were obtained at three impregnation ratios (1:1, 3:1, 5:1) and three carbonization temperatures (500, 650, and 800 °C), optimizing the best conditions to obtain materials with high surface areas and porosity together with surface functional groups to improve energy storage. The results show that the 800 °C synthesized material with 3:1 impregnation ratio presents a capacitance of 120 F/g at 1 A/g, with a retention capacity of 93 % after 12,000 cycles, being the best electrochemical behavior among the carbons prepared. This is attributed to the adequate micro-mesoporosity, content of surface oxygenated functional groups and high surface area (1444 m2/g).

Time-dependent synthesis of tungsten disulfide for flexible supercapacitors

Tungsten disulfide (WS2) with various nanostructures was synthesized for times ranging from 6 to 72 h, using a simple and easy hydrothermal technique, for high-performance supercapacitor applications. The synthesized WS2 for 24 h (WS2–24), among other synthesized WS2, exhibited flower-like structures, composed of numerous nanosheets, demonstrating superior electrochemical properties in terms of electrochemical surface area, charge transfer resistance, specific capacitance, and rate capability. In addition, WS2–24 was coated on a flexible activated carbon cloth substrate to make flexible electrodes and assemble a flexible symmetric supercapacitor with a gel electrolyte. The flexible supercapacitor exhibited a specific capacitance of 262.5 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 with an energy density of 23.6 Wh kg−1 and a power density of 802 W kg−1. It also showed excellent capacitance retention of 94.5 % and a Coulombic efficiency of 86.4 % after 5000 cycles. The remarkable electrochemical properties of the synthesized WS2 materials highlight them as highly effective active materials for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

High Volumetric Energy Density Supercapacitor of Additive-Free Quantum Dot Hierarchical Nanopore Structure.

The high surface-area-to-volume ratio of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) positions them as promising materials for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. However, the challenge lies in achieving a highly accessible surface area, while maintaining good electrical conductivity. An efficient supercapacitor demands a dense yet highly porous structure that facilitates efficient ion-surface interactions and supports fast charge mobility. Here we demonstrate the successful development of additive-free ultrahigh energy density electric double-layer capacitors based on quantum dot hierarchical nanopore (QDHN) structures. Lead sulfide QDs are assembled into QDHN structures that strike a balance between electrical conductivity and efficient ion diffusion by employing meticulous control over inter-QD distances without any additives. Using ionic liquid as the electrolyte, the high-voltage ultrathin-film microsupercapacitors achieve a remarkable combination of volumetric energy density (95.6 mWh cm-3) and power density (13.5 W cm-3). This achievement is attributed to the intrinsic capability of QDHN structures to accumulate charge carriers efficiently. These findings introduce innovative concepts for leveraging colloidal nanomaterials in the advancement of high-performance energy storage devices.

3D Architecting triple gradient graphene-based fiber electrode for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

High-performance fibrous architectures and controllable fabrication methods for active nanomaterials are fundamental in the development of fiber-based supercapacitors (FSCs). Herein, we rationally designed a triple gradient structured fibrous electrode based on three-dimensional (3D) architectural approach with Ni3S2 nanoflakes (Ni3S2 NFs) in situ growth on Ni-coated graphene fiber (Ni3S2-NiGFs) for highly energy-dense asymmetric supercapacitors. Remarkably, the Ni-metal coating imparted the Ni3S2-NiGFs exceptional electrical conductivity (619.8 S cm−1), mechanical strength (335.0 MPa), and flexibility without significantly compromising its density. Moreover, the unique 3D interconnected ultrathin Ni3S2 NFs significantly increase the contact area between the electrode and the electrolyte solution, providing abundant redox activity to facilitate ion transport and accumulation. Therefore, the fibrous electrode showcased a remarkable areal specific capacitance of 1387.6 mF cm−2 at 3 mA cm−2 in 3 M KOHaq electrolyte, while its asymmetric FSCs delivered an impressive areal energy density of 15.6 μW h cm−2 at power density of 1.0 mW cm−2 along with durable cycle life (86.7 % of the initial specific capacitance retention over 10,000 cycles). In summary, the featured work provides a facile but robust electrode design to realize highly energy-dense flexible energy storage devices for next-generation wearable industries.

Electrospun nickel cobalt phosphide/carbon nanofibers as high-performance electrodes for supercapacitors

Nickel cobalt phosphide/carbon nanofibers (NiCoP/C) with an average diameter of approximate 200 nm are prepared by electrospinning combined with calcinations. Carbon nanofibers with an average pore size of 10.77 nm as conductive skeletons support the dispersed NiCoP nanoparticles with the size ranging from 20 to 80 nm, providing abundant reactive sites and facilitating the electrochemical reactions. The specific capacitance of NiCoP/C reaches 478 F g−1 at 2 A g−1 in a 3 M KOH electrolyte, showing superior electrochemical properties compared to its counterparts. After 5000 charge/discharge cycles at 10 A g−1, 99.99 % of initial specific capacitance is retained. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor assembled using NiCoP/C as positive electrode and activated carbon as negative electrode exhibits an energy density of 16.72 Wh kg−1 at a high-power density of 7250 W kg−1. Furthermore, the capacitance loss of the supercapacitor is only 0.04 % after 5000 cycles at 10 A g−1, which is mainly attributed to the enhanced stability of NiCoP nanoparticles owing to the assistance of carbon nanofibers as the skeleton. The synergistic effects of NiCoP nanoparticles and carbon nanofibers result in the boosted electrochemical performances. This study demonstrates the potential application of carbon nanofibers as conductive skeletons for nanostructured electrodes.

Novel sulfonated polyaniline/graphene oxide electrode with high cycling stability for all-solid-state flexible supercapacitors

Polyaniline (PANi) has high theoretical specific capacitance by storing energy through redox reactions and thus is widely used in supercapacitors. However, the skeleton of PANi expands and contracts during the process of ion inhalation and exfoliation, which leads to a decrease in electrochemical performance. To solve this problem, we graft the sulfonic acid group onto the PANi backbone via a borate ester bond, which serves as a proton reservoir to provide protons for PANi to undergo redox reactions and provide pseudocapacitance. SPANi is then polymerized in situ on graphene oxide (GO), and its comprehensive performance of the electrode is further enhanced by designing ordered structures and synergistic interactions. The SPANi5/GO5 composite that are created in-situ have a fantastic specific capacitance of 460.56 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and maintained 85.19% of the primary capacitance after 10,000 cycles. The device is assembled with PAAM/H2SO4/GO as the gel electrolyte, which achieves a specific capacitance of 137.75 F g−1, and the capacitance is retains at 90.74% after 10,000 cycles. The supercapacitor exhibits a large energy density of 13.76 Wh kg−1 when the power density is 200.27 W kg−1. The present study presents a novel and efficient approach for the fabrication of high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Growth of CQD/PPy on cotton cloth as a binder-free high-performance flexible electrode for symmetric supercapacitor

Benefited from the continuous development of nanomaterials, wearable microelectronics with flexible and miniaturized features are booming, and smart textiles are attracting more attentions because of their superior flexibility and perfect safety. The combination of conductive polymers and flexible substrates has created a new field for flexible supercapacitors. Herein, cotton cloth (CC), which is commonly used in daily life, was selected as the flexible substrate and a layer of CQDs was uniformly grown on the CC fibers, and then pyrrole was directly grown on CC by in-situ polymerization under Fe3+ initiation to realize the tight bonding between the conductive polymer and the flexible substrate. The electrochemical properties of the composite electrode could be controlled by changing the amount of CQD. The obtained CC@CQD@PPy electrode has a high specific capacitance (C) of 537.9 F/g at 0.5 A/g. The assembled symmetric CC@CQD@PPy supercapacitor exhibits an excellent energy density (E) of 18.7 Wh/kg at a power density (P) of 125.0 W/kg, and a supreme cycling stability with a capacitance retention of 77.9 % after 10,000 cycles. In addition, the CC@CQD@PPy supercapacitor has excellent flexibility, with almost unchanged electrochemical performance under different bending angles, and the assembled all-solid-state supercapacitor has good electrochemical properties.

Puffed millet derived bi-functional carbon nitride nano-sheets as efficient photocatalyst and high performance supercapacitor electrode material

The graphitic carbon nitride has been synthesized by eco-friendly method using millet seeds. The thermal puffing effect had turned millet into puffed millet and formed adjacent nanosheets nanostructure. High surface area of g-CN was achieved by using KOH through activation process and nanosheets are in the range of 150–250 nm. CV measurement demonstrated that it has capacitance of 250F/g with high stability and cyclic retention (92.2 %) which are crucial for supercapacitors. The degradation of methyl orange exhibited good photocatalytic performance (efficiency >90 %). This depicts that both “puffing effect” and chemical activation process could change biomaterials into functional materials for practical application.

In-situ electropolymerized polyaniline nanoparticles grown on longan shell-derived porous carbon for high-performance supercapacitor electrode

In this study, novel in-situ electropolymerized polyaniline nanoparticles grown on longan shell-derived porous carbon were prepared for high-performance supercapacitor electrode, which exhibited a high specific capacitance of 486F·g−1 at the current density of 0.5 A·g−1 in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte via a three-electrode test. Further, the asymmetric supercapacitor was constructed with the energy density as high as 47.3 Wh·kg−1 at the power density of 800 W·kg−1 and excellent durability, in which the retention rate of specific capacitance was still as high as 85 % over 10,000 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance of the as-prepared composite electrode material can be attributed to the large specific surface area of longan shell-derived porous carbon with honeycomb-like morphology up to 1613.2 m2·g−1, as well as the homogeneous electropolymerization of polyaniline nanoparticles grown on porous carbon, resulting in efficient pseudocapacitive charge storage. Noteworthily, natural longan shell as a renewable carbon source can be suitable for the preparation of high-quality and low-cost porous carbon to significantly improve the performance of supercapacitor electrode, which also provides a feasible pathway for high-value utilization of waste biomass resources.

Structure, Properties, and Preparation of MXene and the Application of Its Composites in Supercapacitors

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) are emerging members of the two-dimensional material family, obtained by removing the A layer of the MAX phase through methods such as liquid-phase etching. This article summarizes the structure and properties of MXenes, as well as several preparation methods, including etching with hydrofluoric acid and fluoride salts, alkali-based etching, electrochemical etching, Lewis acid molten salt etching, and direct synthesis. Due to their unique two-dimensional structure and surface chemistry, MXenes exhibit good metallic conductivity, hydrophilicity, excellent flexibility, and ion intercalation properties, showing great potential in the research and application of supercapacitors and attracting widespread attention. The combination of MXene with other types of materials, including polymers, metal hydroxides, metal oxides, and carbon materials, takes advantage of composites to improve energy storage performance and shows great potential in the research and application of supercapacitors. This article provides a detailed summary of MXene composite materials and capacitor performance and introduces the research progress of MXene materials in the field of supercapacitor energy storage applications, aiming to provide references for the preparation of high-performance MXene supercapacitor electrode materials.
