Low-profile, wideband, and electromagnetic induction (EMI) sensor-compatible antenna for ground penetrating impulse radar applications is an indispensable need for humanitarian demining operations. We present an ultra wideband (UWB), small-size AMC-backed fat bow-tie antenna for such detection systems. Fat bow-tie has longitudinal slots along its main polarization axis so that Eddy currents due to the EMI sensor are minimized on the antenna. Unlike discrete element or tapered reactive/resistive loading, high-impedance surface material is placed inside the cavity to increase the bandwidth and to decrease the ringing caused by the cavity. The proposed antenna has a directional radiation pattern and operates between 700 MHz and 3.2 GHz.
