OBSERVATION AND REFLECTION OF THE COUNTRY PARK— NANCHANG RED EARTH HERITAGE PARK

Located in the suburb of Nanchang City in Jiangxi Province, the Nanchang Red Earth Heritage Park is positioned as a country park that features vast vermicular red earth and Pinus massoniana forest. The off-site review and on-site exploration suggested that the site was confronting with problems of severer soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and intensive human intervention. Both to preserve the symbolic red earth in the site and to reduce cost due to limited budget, a country park requiring low intervention and maintenance was proposed. The park would also engage citizens with geological and scientific education programs and create diverse interactive experience. The design strategies were optimized through continuous site observation and reflection, both with historical and existing data in a broader sense and individual feeling by on-site exploration. This way of dialogue and connection to the site finally gives birth to a natural country park that stays in harmony with nature.

Quantifying nature-based tourism in protected areas in developing countries by using social big data

Spatial visitation patterns and its features on nature-based tourism are difficult to assess using only a field-based survey, which is costly and labor intensive. However, understanding of a protected area's visitation status is critical, as it can strongly influence the sustainability of natural resources. Hence, it is important to identify ‘where people visit’ and ‘why people visit,’ to evaluate the features attractive to tourists. In this regard, we proposed and applied social big data to investigate nature-based tourism in an ASEAN Heritage Park. Overall, our research was able to effectively illustrate spatial patterns of visitation using 10 years of Flickr geo-tagged photographs. Hotspots of high visitation were identified, while revealing the local spatial impact of distributed attributes. This study offers insights into the applicability of social big data to protected-area management and its potential in reinforcing existing field-based participatory approaches.

MOUNT TIMPOONG-HIBOK HIBOK NATURAL MONUMENT: A CASE OF THE NEXT ASEAN HERITAGE PARK

Mount Timpoong-Hibok Hibok Natural Monument (MTHNM) is a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) located in the island of Camiguin, Mindanao, Philippines. As a Protected Area (PA), it is governed by the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) and was nominated as one of the ASEAN Heritage Park in 2014. This paper sought to describe and appraise the significance of the natural monument and protected area in the context of ecotourism. It employed qualitative method of gathering data, such as focused group discussion, key informant interviews, and transect walks. Results of the study revealed that the natural monument is rich in biodiversity, has been a research and learning area for scientists, researchers and students and is the main source of potable water and irrigation for the municipalities of Mambajao, Mahinog, Sagay and Catarman. Cultural beliefs and traditions of the indigenous people in the area are still being practiced. In the management of the natural monument, there is a partnership and collaboration with LGUs, NGOs, POs, IPs and academic institutions as stakeholders. It can be concluded that the site has great potential in becoming one of the next ASEAN heritage park. However, a more efficient and effective biodiversity monitoring system is recommended.

Pollen and charcoal studies at the Wolf Willow site, Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Saskatoon, Canada

This study aims to determine whether pollen and charcoal analyses of terrestrial samples from the Wolf Willow archaeological site at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada could help provide the sorts of data necessary to evaluate the role that environmental conditions may have played in the 6,000 year occupational history of the park. The results indicate that pollen and charcoal were sufficiently preserved for analysis and that pollen assemblages were not significantly affected by downwash or differential preservation. Environmental reconstructions show relatively moist conditions at ca. 4,850 bp continuing into the Oxbow period (ca. 4,800–4,100 bp), when a drying trend developed. The McKean period (ca. 4,200–3,000 bp) reflects a broadly dry period with increasing moisture through time. A hiatus interrupts the record, above which Prairie Side-Notched data (ca. 1,100–600 bp) reveal relatively moist conditions, followed by decreased moisture during Plains Side-Notched times (ca. 600–200 bp), which continued into the recent/historic period. Analyses also indicated possible distinctions between roasting and stone boiling features, repeated spring-time occupation, and task-dependant firewood selection. Comparison of the Wolf Willow records to palaeoenvironmental reconstructions derived from lake cores and other proxy data placed these results within the broader literature on several millennia of Northern Plains climatic and environmental variation. Thus, these results clearly indicate the high potential of such research to address questions regarding human-environment interaction and the role that palaeoenvironmental conditions may have played in drawing indigenous peoples from across the Northern Plains to repeatedly gather at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.

Soil geochemical follow-up in the Cilento World Heritage Park (Campania, Italy) through exploratory compositional data analysis and C-A fractal model

Campania Region (southern Italy) is characterized by several elemental soil anomalies both geogenic and anthropogenic. Parts of these anomalies occur into the World Heritage Territory known as “National Park of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano”, where this follow-up study has been carried out. In this paper, a methodology based on compositional data analysis (CoDA) and factor score C-A fractal model was applied on geochemical data from the above study in order to identify geochemical signatures associated anomalies. Eighty-one top soil samples were collected over an area of 98km2, and analyzed by ICP-MS after aqua regia digestion. Frequency based method (edaplots, classical and robust compositional biplot) and frequency space-method (factor score maps) were applied to visualize the correlation between variables and their main features into the survey areas. The different geochemical patterns were distinguished by a multivariate analysis combined with Concentration-Area (C-A) fractal method. Results show that geochemical data should be transformed under a compositional perspective to avoid artefacts, prior to statistical computations. Indeed, ilr-transformed data show a distinct bimodal distribution for several elements. This type of distribution appears masked considering raw and lognormal data. A “robustification” of the variables dataset permits to found a more clear relationship between variables. Factor score maps based on ilr-transformed variables and C-A plot cut off threshold displayed different geochemical patterns. In our survey area soil alteration phenomena could mask the nature of parental rock. The factor scores maps highlight an antithetic behaviour of many elements. Elements characterized by elevated geochemical mobility, such as Ca and Mg, are negatively correlated with Chemical Alteration Index values. Instead, Sn, Th, Be, Al are characterized by elevated geochemical stability; for this reason they are found where high-weathered soils occurs. The presence of elements such as Co, Cu Fe, Ni, Cr, Zn, K, Mn is mainly controlled by terrigenous flysch deposition. As, Pb (exceeding the CSC) and Sb association mainly occur in correspondence of urban areas and where traffic jams are frequent.

In traditional and historical Algerian architecture, one can find a series of mortars that were used for grouting and coating masonry. Although Algeria has a very rich heritage park, our interest mainly focuses on the mortars used in buildings from the Ottoman period, in Algiers and in particular, the mortars of the Citadel of Algiers, the Casbah and villa Mahieddine. This study allows us to determine the physical properties of a selection of mortars and identify their chemical and mineralogical composition. The chemical and mineralogical analyses showed that the studied mortars of the Ottoman period in Algiers contain raw materials in their composition, namely sand, lime, crushed brick and a few additions, such as natural adjuvant. These mortars are made according to specific proportions of binder (lime) and aggregates (sand). For jointing mortars, the proportion is one-part lime to one and a half to two parts sand (1 to 1.5 - 2), whereas for finishing mortars, it is one-part lime for two to three parts sand (1 to 2-3). The physical characteristics show significant porosity and absorption percentages for most of the mortar samples, with exception to MJ4 jointing mortar samples, taken from Villa Mahieddine and MC1 coating mortar samples, taken from the Powder House and Villa Mahieddine, where the percentages did not exceed 15% of water absorption and 27% porosity, respectively. Furthermore, the chemical analysis of the samples showed increased levels of the following oxides SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3, which confirm the hydraulic nature of the mortars. Sustainable Design, Cultural Landscapes and Heritage Parks; the Case of the Mondego River

AbstractOver the past few decades, in both the USA and Europe, many cultural landscapes (CLs) facing social and economic decline have been revitalized through processes embracing planning, design, touristic ideas, heritage resources, local administrations and communities, resulting in cultural or heritage parks (HPs). This paper forms part of the debate on CLs and highlights their rehabilitation via HPs. The research raises the question of the role HPs have played within the restoration of CLs while aiming to bring the discussion into the current sustainable planning and land design debate. As a case study, it takes the experience of the Mondego River Heritage Park (MRHP), located in the central region of Portugal. The MRHP builds upon the European Landscape Convention, HPs' accomplishments and academic studies. Conclusions suggest heritage to be an effective driving force for sustainable development and the HP as an operative concept in the planning, land design and management of the territory. The new life of craftsmen houses in Heritage Park of Wooden Architecture in Lodz

Museum of Wooden Architecture in Lodz was constructed in the Władysław Reymont Park adjoining from the back side to the Central Museum of Textiles. The open-air museum covers the area of 6 000 m2. Eight 19th century wooden buildings were moved to the open-air museum: four craftsmen houses (Łódź, ul. Mazowiecka 47, Kopernika 42, Wólczańska 68, Żeromskiego 68), one-storey house for workers (Łódź ul. Mazowiecka 61), a summer villa (Łódź, Scaleniowa 18), a wooden church – the unique example of 19th century wooden sacral architecture which is enrolled into the register of monuments and a wooden tram-stop moved from the Marketplace of the city of Zgierz.
 The purpose of the following article is to present the overall process which enabled to preserve the legacy of the early industrial wooden architecture in Lodz (which mainly consists of wooden craftsmen houses). The problems associated with the realization of this project are described in a comprehensive way including both the project preparation process and the details of its final realization. The article presents also different ways of adopting the relocated objects to their new functions, offering wide educational and cultural programme that makes the museum much alive and attractive for tourists.

Topographical units and soil types prove more efficient for vegetation sample site placement than Land Type units in semi-arid savanna, North West province, South Africa

Land Type mapping units were used to stratify the Heritage Park corridor, in the North West province, South Africa, into eight Land Type units prior to placing 109 floristic sample sites. At each site, species composition and relative frequency data were recorded for the herbaceous and woody layer. The floristic data (species presence at each site) were grouped into Land Types, topographical units and broad soil types. Each group was analysed independently using multivariate detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and the mean similarity test. The floristic data in each Land Type showed a 42% range of similarity and considerable overlap of polygons on the DCA diagram. However, floristic data classed in topographical units reduced the range of percentage similarity to 29%. Before the Land Types map could be completely dismissed, the broader soil descriptions were compared and the percentage similarity of the four different soil forms was 28%. The detailed combination of terrain types, soil forms and climate zones constituting Land Type units was less suitable for the stratification of vegetation units than either of the broader soil types or topographic units when stratifying large savanna areas for vegetation surveys.

Conservação urbana e regularização fundiária de assentamentos populares

This paper explores the ideas of integrated urban conservation as a framework for formulating strategies and actions that target processes for legally regularizing the ownership of land in low-income settlements of Brazilian cities. More specifically it shows the applicability of its general principles for the planning of these areas with a view to the permanence of its residents by guaranteeing ownership of dwellings and the provision of better environmental conditions. Therefore, it has a practical purpose to the extent that it is based on implementing the aforementioned ideas in formulating the Urban Plan of do (Jaboatao dos Guararapes-PE), which lies within a national historic park. First, the paper presents the concepts of permanence and change and the legal conditions restricting the land regularization of the low-income settlements. Secondly, expose the main urban problems (infrastructure and land occupation) of the area, the Corrego do Balaio (Jaboatao dos Guararapes Brazil), that is in national heritage park. Finaly, presents the application of the concepts and conditionings in the development of the urban master plan of the area.

Energy Usage within The Residences at Wiley H. Bates Heritage Park: Variable Energy use within Similar Housing Units

The Residences at Wiley H. Bates Heritage Park is a 71-unit residential living facility in Annapolis, MD. The units are all-electric and are individually metered. They range in size from 578 square feet to 822 square feet. This article is observational and its purpose is to show the wide range in energy usage that occurs in residential living facilities. These findings may provide insight into the variability of usage that goes unobserved in master-metered multi-family facilities.

Camp Nelson and Kentucky’s Civil War Memory

It has often been said that Kentucky joined the Confederacy after the Civil War. While this statement might seem absurd, it has had powerful ramifications for how the Civil War is interpreted. After the Civil War, Kentucky promoted the “Lost Cause” narrative of the war, which denied the central place of slavery and emancipation, and further denied that African American soldiers and civilians made significant contributions to the Union victory. As a large U.S. Army supply depot and Kentucky’s largest U.S. Army African American military and refugee camp, Camp Nelson is a contradiction to this traditional Kentucky Civil War narrative as it illustrates both the state’s pro-Union stance and the contributions made by its African American population. Through the use of historical documents and archaeology, Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park is attempting to create a new Kentucky Civil War narrative, one that includes the experiences and contributions of African American soldiers and refugees.

Inheriting slavery: making sense of a difficult heritage

In 1807, the British parliament decreed the abolition of the slave trade; since then, the places connected with the slave trade have physically ‘inherited’ its material traces and have become emotionally charged with historical memory. This article looks at the material inheritance of slavery and the challenges of its interpretation in historical sites, through the use of sound. Specifically, the article focuses on the Clifton National Heritage Park, an old slave plantation in Nassau (New Providence Island, Bahamas), and its interpretation via soundscapes. We will argue that the inheritance of slavery, as cultural trauma and collective memory, is ‘a form of remembrance’ that impact on identity formation: this can be interpreted, re-appropriated and attributed new meanings, for the benefits of both local and non-local communities.

Bonegilla Heritage Park: Contesting and Co-ordinating a Public History Site

Since the 1980s, efforts to publically commemorate the former migrant training and reception centre of Bonegilla, while intermittent, have increased. I am referring to: reunions and anniversaries, state and national heritage listings, the erection of museum displays, temporary and touring exhibitions, the on-site Heritage Park, and forms of popular culture. For the national audience, as well as several ethnic communities, Bonegilla now plays a role in the collective imagination of the post-war period and the migrant journey. Furthermore, the nature of Bonegilla’s public representation has evolved since the late 1980s. Bonegilla has become much more than a place of personal migrant memory, and its previous negative connotations in the public arena have been erased. This public evolution is linked to much wider processes in our national history. This article thus explores the contestation and co-ordination of collective memories—that is, multiple narratives of Bonegilla’s past, which, while in constant dialogue with each other, are framed and sanctioned by the limits of Australian multiculturalism and heritage discourses. While the earliest efforts to commemorate Bonegilla might be typified as ‘participatory’ and vernacular, they might now be described in reference to ‘retrospective commemoration’, in which Bonegilla’s public history is framed by state-sanctioned narratives and other attendant discursive frameworks.

Archives, Heritage, Living History: Locating the Prince House through Performance (and) Ethnography

This study of desire, ephemera and convergence centres on the Prince House, a reconstituted historical site located within Heritage Park Historical Village in Calgary, Alberta. Through a somatic interaction with the space, the author takes into account feeling, sensation and mise-en-sce`ne in effort to attend to the cultural traces that emerge when one attempts to inhabit history, asking: how do we relate to a particular site described as historical? Why do some histories continue to pull at us while others fall away; most of all, what is the force that makes a site like the Prince House “go?” Focusing on our engagement with specific renderings of the past, the author comments on the instability of the story of present absence, arriving at a metaphysics at once both real and imagined, longed for and lost – a story of nostalgia and the body to which there is no ending.

Coral boulders, gravel tongues and sand sheets: Features of coastal accretion and sediment nourishment by Cyclone Tomas (March 2010) on Taveuni Island, Fiji

Tropical Cyclone (TC) Tomas in March 2010 was a category-4 storm that struck the northern and eastern islands of Fiji in the southwest Pacific, with the coast of Taveuni Island in particular experiencing a significant surge and high waves as the eye passed within 30km. Post-storm field investigations of the coastal geomorphic impacts concentrated on an area in central Taveuni (S16°50′ 179°52′W) where protected fringing reefs and coastlines form part of the Bouma National Heritage Park (BNHP). Here, a range of cyclone constructional imprints were found to have supplemented existing coastal sediments. Fresh coral boulders strewn across reef platforms indicate that TC Tomas had sufficient power to deliver new coral blocks, but that this material comprises a relatively minor component (20%) of pre-existing boulder fields. Comparison between the dimensions of fresh (max. 4.9m3) and older blocks (max.>40m3) reveals that unknown earlier events (storms or tsunamis) produced much larger debris, and therefore presumably generated much stronger flow velocities across the fringing reefs than TC Tomas. Analysis of calcarenite slabs quarried from in situ beachrock exposures was particularly useful for calculating storm-surge flow velocities at the shoreline, giving mean values of 3.4 and 1.9m/s for run-up and backwash, respectively. Several elongate tongues (max. length 75m) of fresh coral gravel were also constructed perpendicular to the reef crest. A conceptual model of debris accretion based on wave refraction across a crescent-shaped reef front is developed to explain their formation, but which does not rely on the simultaneous existence of a reef-parallel rubble rampart. Overall, the patchy and discontinuous nature of cyclogenic accretionary features across reef, beach and back-beach locations indicates the potential challenges for identification and interpretation of palaeo-cyclone events within the sedimentary record on affected coastlines in the South Pacific Islands.

Inspiration from the “Scene” — Case Study of the Conceptual Planning and Design of Bei-Ting Portal Space

This thesis considers the organization and design of heritage park portal space as the target. It develops corresponding initial analysis and planning application by the thinking style from site to scene. What’s more, it mainly discusses the value of the concept of “scene” in the planning and design by using “scene” as the guidance, through excavating, selecting and organizing the connotation of the target of the planning deeply. Then, the paper discusses and thinks it as a kind of exploratory methods.
