The influence mechanism of mechanical modification on fly ash carbonation to solidify heavy metals

Dry and wet milling, were selected to carry out modification experiments. The influence of mechanical modification pretreatment on fly ash carbonation to solidify heavy metals was explored, and its influence mechanism was revealed. Mechanical modification can improve the physical properties, and the continuous application of mechanical energy can activate the active sites which strengthen fly ash carbonation. The carbonation efficiency was obtained by 500–800 °C thermogravimetric analysis before and after carbonation. The average carbonation efficiency improved by dry milling is 2.28 %, and that improved by wet milling is 8.11 %. Carbonation has a good curing effect on Cr, Cd, Pb and As, especially when the CO2 is raised to supercritical. At 8 MPa pressure, the leaching concentrations of Cr, Cd, Pb and As decrease by 34.94 %, 7.00 %, 15.28 % and 35.85 %. The stabilization effect of fly ash carbonation on heavy metals is significantly improved after mechanical modification pretreatment. Comparison experiments on characterization of fly ash before and after mechanical modification shows that ball milling significantly increases the specific surface area. The crushing effect of wet milling is better, because the presence of water weakens the agglomeration of fine particles caused by van der Waal force. Mechanical modification can effectively improve the pore structure of fly ash and activate active sites which promote carbonation to form a larger physical wrapping area and strengthen stable carbonate formation. so mechanical modification effectively improves the solidification of heavy metals by carbonation.

Oil-based drilling cutting pyrolysis residues- phosphogypsum foamed ceramics: Basic properties, microsintering mechanism and heavy metals solidification

Oil-based drilling cutting pyrolysis residues(ODPR) and phosphogypsum(PG) are typical types of industrial solid waste in China, characterized by low utilization rate and high output. The large amount of untreated accumulation will release heavy metals(HMs) and other pollutants, posing risks to the environment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a high value-added building material product that can reduce environmental hazards while improving utilization rate. Based on this background, this study uses ODPR and PG as raw materials to explore their potential applications in the field of foamed ceramics. Research has shown that different sintering processes have a significant impact on the appearance and performance of products. By adjusting the preparation process, foamed ceramic products with excellent performance can be prepared. When the sintering temperature is 925℃, the foaming agent dosage is 3 %, and the raw material ratio ODPR:PG:Borax=35:45:20, a foamed ceramic product with a porosity of 60.95 %, water absorption rate of 3.4 %, compressive strength of 4.8 MPa, thermal conductivity of 0.8016 W/(m·k), and acid and alkali resistance of 98.57 % and 99.44 % can be prepared. The product meets the relevant requirements of “Fired heat preservation brick and block (GB/T 26538)” and “ General Specification for porous ceramic products (GB/T 16533)”. The HMs content test showed that the Ni and Pb contents in the pre-sintered blanks were the highest, at 0.6308 mg/kg and 0.3182 mg/kg, respectively. However, after high-temperature calcination, the solidification rate of HMs could reach up to 98.93 %, and the leaching amount was significantly reduced. The three further evaluation methods indicate that HMs in the pre-sintered blanks and foamed ceramic products do not pose significant ecological risks. The research results provide a green inorganic insulation material in the field of solid waste control and building materials.

Phase evolution and heavy metal solidification of cement desulphurized electrolytic manganese residue composite cementitious system under steam curing conditions based on thermodynamic simulation

The mechanical properties and microstructure of desulphurized electrolytic manganese (D-EMR) cement mortar under steam curing at 80 °C for 7 h and 7 days and standard curing for 3 days and 28 days were studied. The hydration products, microstructure and pore distribution were studied by Quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis (QXRD), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and backscattered electron (BSE). At the same time, the evolution of hydration products with age and the existence form of heavy metals under different curing conditions were simulated by GEMS thermodynamics. The results show that steam curing can promote the hydration reaction of cement and the secondary hydration of D-EMR. With the extension of steam curing time, the mechanical properties of the early stage are significantly improved. At a D-EMR content of 15 %, the compressive strength of D-EMR cement mortar after steam curing for 7 days is 1.15 times that of the control group under the same conditions, and the content of calcium hydroxide (CH) is 65.91 % of the control group. Steam curing can significantly improve the degree of C3S hydration of cement clinker and the secondary hydration of D-EMR, and increase the degree of polymerization of hydrated calcium silicate (C-S-H) gel. In addition, thermodynamic simulation showed that when the pH value was greater than 7.5, Mn2+ was mainly stable in the form of Mn(OH)2, MnOOH and Mn3O4, and there was no leaching risk. This will provide theoretical support for the use of D-EMR as a new type of supplementary cementitious material (SCM).

Oil-based drilling cutting pyrolysis residues-recycled fine powder sintered ceramsite: Basic properties, microsintering mechanism, lightweight concrete application and heavy metals solidification

Oil-based Drilling Cutting Pyrolysis Residue (ODPR) is a waste produced during oilfield drilling using oil-based mud. Recycled Fine Powder (RFP) consists of particles less than 0.16 mm, crushed and sieved from waste concrete. China's solid waste is characterized by high production, low utilization rates, and high pollution levels. This study explores the feasibility of preparing ceramsite from ODPR and RFP. By examining the effects of varying temperatures and proportions on the macroscopic and microscopic properties of ODPR-RFP ceramsite (ORC), the optimal process was determined: ODPR: RFP = 7:3, 2 % borax flux, 10 minutes ball milling, 1200℃ sintering temperature, and 30 minutes insulation. The resulting ORC, with a bulk density of 1120 kg/m³, cylinder compression strength of 10.50 MPa, and water absorption rate of 7.8 %, meets the "Lightweight aggregates and its test methods (GT/B17431.2)" standard. Batch production of ORC products of various sizes was conducted to evaluate their practical application in LC30 lightweight aggregate concrete. Replacing the aggregate in lightweight concrete with ORC yielded a concrete with excellent mixing performance, reaching a maximum strength of 31.2 MPa after 7d and 44.8 MPa after 28d. The damage pattern of ORC lightweight concrete is characterized by longitudinal splitting, with varied crack initiation and expansion paths. In the interfacial transition zone of ORC concrete, the ORC form a strong bond with the cement mortar, enhancing the strength of the lightweight concrete. Additionally, the leaching of heavy metals (HMs) from the ORC was examined to assess potential environmental pollution. The results indicated that preparing ORC from these two types of solid waste can effectively immobilize HMs, with a solidification rate of up to 92.10 %. Pb with high content is mainly solidified in the form of solid solution to form (Ba, Pb) SO4. The ecological risk assessment method for HMs shows that using this solid waste and process to prepare ORC does not pose HMs risks and is an environmentally friendly building material.

Adsorption behavior and solidification mechanism of Pb(II) on synthetic C-S-H gel with low and high Ca/Si ratios in highly alkaline environments

Adsorption behavior is rarely investigated as a heavy metal solidification mechanism in alkali-activated municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash compacts. This study simulates the adsorption behavior and solidification mechanism of Pb(II) on synthetic C-S-H gel with low and high Ca/Si ratios in high alkaline internal pore solution environments of alkali-activated MSWI fly ash compacts. The study examines the fraction of Pb(OH)3- in a Pb(II) solution (100 mg/L) at pH 11.8 and 12.4, with percentages of 85.9–90.6 % and 93.4–95.1 %, respectively. pH values are identified as the key parameter affecting the adsorption capacity of C-S-H for Pb(II). The equilibrium adsorption capacities (Qe) values of Pb(OH)3- (pH = 11.8) for C-S-H with Ca/Si ratios 1.20 and 0.60 are approximately 104 mg/g and 110 mg/g. At pH 12.4, the C-S-H gel with a Ca/Si ratio = 1.20 performs better in terms of adsorption. The adsorption of Pb(OH)3- by C-S-H is predominantly a chemisorption process at pH 11.8. Based on the ΔG0 data, the adsorption process is determined to be spontaneous. The 1.16 eV LUMO and HOMO difference for Si2O(OH)6 + Pb(OH)3-, compared with the 3.92 eV difference for Si3O2(OH)8 + Pb(OH)3-, indicates a lower difficulty of electron transition in the reaction between Si2O(OH)6 and Pb(OH)3-. XPS and FTIR results confirm the dehydration and combination of Pb(OH)3- and Si-OH in a silicate tetrahedron (Q1 or Q2) on the C-S-H surface to create Si-O-Pb. Partial Ca(II) in C-S-H gel can be replaced or released during the Pb(II) adsorption process. These findings hold significant theoretical importance for the adsorption and solidification mechanism of Pb(II) in alkali-activated MSWI fly ash specimens.

Unlocking the potential: Transforming hazardous waste into solid cementitious materials

Incineration fly ash and mineral slag represent hazardous and industrial solid wastes necessitating immediate remediation in China. The liberation and stabilization of heavy metals have erected formidable barriers to their reclamation and repurposing. This study presents a pivotal technology for creating all-solid waste cementitious materials, with the optimal parameters consisting of a dosage of 55.773% incineration fly ash, 38.822% cementitious materials dosage, and 5.405% adhesive powders dosage. Furthermore, a comprehensive evaluation model has been developed to assess the performance of these materials. Several extraction procedure experiments were conducted to investigate the leaching behavior of heavy metals under various leaching scenarios, which suggests the diffusion coefficients of heavy metals under the optimal ratio are all less than 3 × 10–13 m2/s, affirming the effective stabilization and the absence of potential migration risks. The primary mechanisms of solidification involved include ion exchange reactions for charge balance and the encapsulation of precipitates through cementation, both of which contribute to the solidification of heavy metals. The findings will illuminate advanced strategies for reducing waste, enhancing resource efficiency, and promoting environmentally friendly building practices, as well as provide a promising avenue for achieving sustainability goals in construction projects, leading to reduced environmental impact and improved long-term sustainability. The integration of ACM-SW can pave the way for transformative advancements in sustainable building practices, ultimately leading to a more environmentally friendly and resilient built environment.

Insights into the thermally induced calcium carbonate oligomers solidifying heavy metals of MSWI fly ash and the mechanism of zinc on crystallization

The preparation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) oligomers in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) is an efficient and low-carbon method for solidifying FA. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of thermal induction on heavy metal solidification in CaCO3 oligomer fly ash (COFA). Ca in FA formed CaCO3 chains that crystallized into calcite after thermal induction, effectively solidifying heavy metals. The thermal induction temperature rather than induction time, heating rate, or cooling rate was found to be the most significant factor influencing solidification. As temperatures increased (200 °C∼400 °C), CaCO3 in COFA was transformed into calcite, improving the solidification efficiencies of Cu, Pb, and Zn from 70.02 %, 99.91 %, and 71.68 % to above 99.99 %. However, Cr’s efficiency decreased from 96.04 % to −19.66 % due to oxidation. Switching the thermal induction atmosphere from air to nitrogen reduced Cr leaching by 62.9 %. Optimal results were achieved at 300 °C for 30 minutes, with leaching concentrations below China’s reuse standard (HJ 1134–2020). Zn in FA formed oligomer networks with Ca, and then decomposed into stable ZnO during thermal induction. Additionally, Zn promoted the conversion of CaCO3 to calcite. This study provides scientific and theoretical guidance for disposing of MSWI FA using CaCO3 oligomers.

Performance of coal slime-based silicon fertilizer in simulating lead-contaminated soil: Heavy metal solidification and multi-nutrient release characteristics

High-ash coal slime-based silica fertilizer (CSF) has the potential to provide mineral nutrients and passivate lead (Pb) in the soil to ensure the sustainable development of the coal industry and agriculture. This study investigated the performance and passivation mechanism of CSF, which contains potassium tobermorite and potassium silicate as the main components for soil improvement. Leaching experiments showed that low-crystalline muscovite was the only crystalline phase for CSF etching and that the silicon (Si), calcium (Ca), and potassium (K) in CSF had significant citric solubility. Soil cultivation and planting trials confirmed the ability of CSF to neutralize soil acidity, increase available soil Si and K, improve exchangeable Ca content, reduce the bioefficacy of Pb (exchangeable Pb by 19–75 % and carbonate-bound Pb by 6–18 %), and increase residual state Pb content. Compared to untreated Pb-contaminated soil, the 0.4 % CSF treatment reduced Pb in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa) by 25 % and increased plant biomass, Ca, and K by 37 %, 36 %, and 4 %, respectively. At the same time, soil pH increased by 0.58, and residual state Pb increased by 5 %. In CSF-treated soils, lead silicate is the dominant form of Pb present in the residual state. First-principle calculations showed that Pb3Si2O7 (cohesion energy −1.98 eV) formed by the passivation of Pb by CSF had greater stability in the soil compared to lead carbonate (PbCO3) (cohesion energy −1.38 eV) and lead sulfate (PbSO4) (cohesion energy −1.41 eV). This work shows the promising application of coal slime mineral fertilizers prepared using hydrothermal methods for soil improvement.

Solidification of heavy metal in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash and performance evolution of alkali-activated foam concrete

The heavy metals in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) limit its large-scale application. To improve the utilization ratio of MSWIFA, a slag-MSWIFA-fly ash alkali-activated foam concrete (ASFC) was prepared in this study. The influence of MSWIFA content on the performances of ASFC and the solidification effect of heavy metals in MSWIFA by alkali-activated materials were studied. The results show that the performance of ASFC was directly related to the pore structure, which was affected by the fluidity and setting time of the paste, as well as the quantity and type of hydration products. When the MSWIFA substitution rate was 25–50 %, the fluidity of the paste was better, the pore diameter decreased, and the number of closed pores increased. The compressive strength of ASFC at 28 d was 1.72–2.01 MPa, and the thermal conductivity was 0.1305–0.1340 W/(m∙k). The leaching concentrations of the six heavy metal elements in the 28 d hardened paste of ASFC were all lower than 0.04 mg/L, and the solidification efficiencies of Pb and Zn, the two heavy meta elements with higher concentrations in MSWIFA, were both greater than 90 %. This study provides a technical and theoretical reference for applying MSWIFA in alkali-activated foam concrete.

Mineral transformation and solidification of heavy metals during co-melting of MSWI fly ash with coal fly ash.

Melting is an efficient method to turn municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash (FA) into non-hazardous material. Coal fly ash (CFA) was selected as the silica-alumina source to carry out co-melting research with MSWI FA in this work. The effects of the temperature and the CFA content on mineral transformation and the migration characteristics of heavy metals were analyzed. The results showed that the mixtures of MSWI FA and CFA reacted at high temperatures to mainly generate Ca2Al2SiO7, Ca2SiO4, and CaAl2Si2O8 primarily and then melted and formed the amorphous-phase vitreous body when the CFA content was more than 40% and the temperature was higher than 1300 °C. During the melting process, Cd and Pb were almost volatilized, while Cr, Mn, and Ni were almost retained. Besides, the volatilization rates of Cu and Zn fluctuated with the temperature and the CFA content. Suitable treatment temperature and CFA content were conducive to the transformation of the heavy metals in the FA into stable forms, and the melting products were no longer hazardous wastes because the vitreous body could effectively encapsulate heavy metals. This study aims to help reuse the FA and CFA collaboratively and be more environmentally friendly.

The cementitious properties of alkali-activated municipal solid waste incineration fly ash-phosphorus slag-secondary aluminum dross matrix composites and the mechanism of solidification of heavy metals

Based on the purpose of safe and resourceful disposal of hazardous waste, this paper proposes a new method for the combined treatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA), phosphorus slag (PS), and secondary aluminum dross (SAD). A novel alkali-activated binder was synthesized by orthogonal experimental design, and the strength formation mechanism of the binder and the solidification and stabilization (S/S) mechanism of heavy metals were revealed. The results show that the maximum strength of the sample at 60 d is 22.4 MPa. The addition of SAD will affect the development of the strength of the solidified body and the types of hydration products of the gel. The hydration products of the solidified body are mainly calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), calcium aluminosilicate hydrate (C-A-S-H), and calcium alumina (AFt). The solidified body of alkali-activated cementitious material has a good S/S effect on heavy metals, and its solidification efficiency is Zn > Cd > Pb > Cu > Ni > As > Cr. The maximum solidification rates of Zn, Pb, and Cd were 99.97 %, 97.90 %, and 99.68 %, respectively. At the same time, the leaching concentration of various heavy metals meets the threshold requirements stipulated by relevant international norms and has good environmental safety.

Study on the properties improvement of wet quarry sludge made artificial aggregates by using PAM and CaO

The artificial aggregates prepared with high crystalline wet quarry sludge (WQS) by cold-bonded process suffer from low mechanical strength and poor solidification effect. Inspired by the shell, polymer chains were incorporated to enhance the connection among WQS particles. However, traditional polymer modification faces many limitations such as high cost and hydration inhibition. In this work, calcium oxide (CaO) and polyacrylamide (PAM) were co-used to address the above limitations and improve the properties of artificial aggregates. The compressive strength, hydration products and microstructure of modified WQS-aggregates were monitored. The main findings prove that the co-use of CaO and PAM effectively improves the mechanical performance of WQS-aggregates. The compressive strength of aggregates modified by CaO and PAM reach 11.85 MPa, exceeding the control by approximately 46.3 %. This approach mitigates issues like crack generation and poor cement hydration, which will occur when they are added separately. Through metal coordination and promoted carbonation behaviors, the introduction of CaO and PAM promotes the formation of a 3D organic-inorganic network and induces a denser microstructure. The porosities of aggregates reduce from 27.48 % to 24.83 %. The incorporation of CaO and PAM enhances the solidification of heavy metals. The prepared WQS-aggregates meet the requirements of environmental security. It is believed that this work will provide a new solution for the preparation of low carbon artificial construction products with low activity solid wastes.

Impact of desulphurized electrolytic manganese residue-assisted cementitious materials on silicate cement hydration and environmental safety assessment

The use of electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) as a mineral admixture is an efficient way of utilization, but its high content of gypsum phase limits its utilization. In this paper, EMR was desulphurized by means of high temperature reduction roasting to remove the hindrance when utilized as a mineral admixture. The effect of desulphurized EMR (D-EMR) on the formation of major hydration products such as C–S–H and calcium hydroxide (CH), as well as on the degree of hydration of cement clinker, was explored based on mechanical properties, hydration kinetics, thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DTG) and Quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis (QXRD). In particular, the mineral phase evolution, the change rule of pore solution and the leaching behavior of heavy metals were simulated in conjunction with thermodynamics. The results show that the D-EMR content of 15 %, comparable mechanical properties and microscopic morphology to the control group can be obtained, while C3S and C2S hydration can be promoted by a factor of 1.08 and 1.28, respectively, without the risk of heavy metal leaching. Based on the thermodynamic simulation of heavy metal solidification by cement clinker minerals, it can be seen that heavy metals in D-EMR composite slurry are solidified mainly by Mn(OH)2 precipitation and weak adsorption effect, and it is safe even at the level of 30 % replacement, provided that the pH value of the leaching solution is greater than 7.5. In addition, the desulphurization technology is feasible from the perspective of environmental protection, and saves 200,000 CNY in emission costs.

A study of the stabilization and solidification of heavy metals in co-vitrification of medical waste incineration ash and coal fly ash

Medical waste incineration ash (MWIA) has significant concentrations of heavy metals, dioxins, and chlorine that, if handled incorrectly, might cause permanent damage to the environment and humans. The low content of calcium (Ca), silicon (Si), and aluminum (Al) is a brand-new challenge for the melting technique of MWIA. This work added coal fly ash (CFA) to explore the effect of melting on the detoxication treatment of MWIA. It was found that the produced vitrification product has a high vitreous content (98.61%) and a low potential ecological risk, with an initial ash solidification rate of 67.38%. By quantitatively assessing the morphological distribution features of heavy metals in ashes before melting and molten products, the stabilization and solidification rules of heavy metals during the melting process were investigated. This work ascertained the feasibility of co-vitrification of MWIA and CFA. In addition, the high-temperature melting and vitrification accelerated the detoxification of MWIA and the solidification of heavy metals.

High-efficient stabilization and solidification of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash by synergy of alkali treatment and supersulfated cement

Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (IFA) designated as hazardous waste poses risks to environment and human health. This study introduces a novel approach for the stabilization and solidification (S/S) of IFA: a combined approach involving alkali treatment and immobilization in low-carbon supersulfated cement (SSC). The impact of varying temperatures of alkali solution on the chemical and mineralogical compositions, as well as the pozzolanic reactivity of IFA, and the removal efficiency of heavy metals and metallic aluminum (Al) were examined. The physical characteristics, hydration kinetics and effectiveness of SSC in immobilizing IFA were also analyzed. Results showed that alkali treatment at 25 °C effectively eliminated heavy metals like manganese (Mn), barium (Ba), nickel (Ni), and chromium (Cr) to safe levels and totally removed the metallic Al, while enhancing the pozzolanic reactivity of IFA. By incorporating the alkali-treated IFA and filtrate, the density, compressive strength and hydration reaction of SSC were improved, resulting in higher hydration degree, finer pore structure, and denser microstructure compared to untreated IFA. The rich presence of calcium-aluminosilicate-hydrate (C-(A)-S-H) and ettringite (AFt) in SSC facilitated the efficient stabilization and solidification of heavy metals, leading to a significant decrease in their leaching potential. The use of SSC for treating Ca(OH)2- and 25°C-treated IFA could achieve high strength and high-efficient immobilization.

Effect of aluminosilicates on the release and form transformation of semi-volatile heavy metals during the combustion of hyperaccumulator plants

With the development of phytoremediation of heavy metals contaminated soils, the harmless disposal of hyperaccumulator plants has been imminent. In this study, the effects of typical aluminosilicates on the heavy metal migration during the combustion of ryegrass were compared. The addition of kaolin, montmorillonite, and γ-Al2O3 were all effective in solidifying Pb and Zn. As the combustion temperature increased, the toxicity of remaining Pb and Zn decreased. Compared to montmorillonite, kaolin was more effective in capturing Pb and Zn at 600–825 °C, and the remaining Pb and Zn were mainly in acid-soluble form. The large amount of alkali/alkaline earth metals will react with the Si/Al components to form various potassium feldspars and calcium silicates, thus inhibiting the solidification of heavy/alkali metals. However, the Si in montmorillonite was more effective in converting Pb and Zn into residual form than kaolin when faced with the competition solidification of alkali/alkaline earth metals, at which time the percentage of Pb and Zn in the residual form increased from 13.27% and 6.00% to 39.21% and 9.84%, respectively. This work provided a research perspective based on the solidification of heavy metals by Si component, which enables a more comprehensive analysis of the differences in heavy metals solidification by Si/Al-based minerals.

Application and mechanism of carbonate material in the treatment of heavy metal pollution: a review.

Among the many heavy metal pollution treatment agents, carbonate materials show strong flexibility and versatility by virtue of their high adsorption capacity for heavy metals and the characteristics of multiple and simple modification methods. It shows good potential for development. This review summarizes the application of carbonate materials in the treatment of heavy metal pollution according to the research of other scholars. It mainly relates to the application of surface-modified, activated, and nano-sized carbonate materials in the treatment of heavy metal pollution in water. Natural carbonate minerals and composite carbonate minerals solidify and stabilize heavy metals in soil. Solidification of heavy metals in hazardous waste solids is by MICP. There are four aspects of calcium carbonate oligomers curing heavy metals in fly ash from waste incineration. The mechanism of treating heavy metals by carbonate in different media was discussed. However, in the complex environment where multiple types of pollutants coexist, questions on how to maintain the efficient processing capacity of carbonate materials and how to use MICP to integrate heavy metal fixation and seepage prevention in solid waste base under complex and changeable natural environment deserve our further consideration. In addition, the use of carbonate materials for the purification of trace radioactive wastewater and the safe treatment of trace radioactive solid waste are also worthy of further exploration.

Experimental Study on the Strength and Microstructure of Red Mud-Based Silty Sand Modified with Lime–Fly Ash

This study aimed to assess the viability of utilizing lime–fly ash (LF) and red mud (RM) in the modification of silty soil (LF-RMS) for subgrade filling. The primary objective of this research was to analyze the mechanical characteristics and examine the curing mechanisms associated with said modified materials. Different curing times were utilized in the analysis of mechanical properties (e.g., via unconfined compression testing), microstructure (via scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis), and environmental indices (via assessment of corrosivity, heavy metal concentration, and radioactivity) with various dosages of red mud (DRM) and Lime–fly ash (DLF). Analyses of the curing mechanisms, failure modes, microstructures, and degrees of environmental impact associated with LF-RMS were also undertaken. The tests indicated that the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) exhibited an initial increase followed by a decrease as the DRM and DLF levels increased. Additionally, the strength of LF-RMS increased with an increase in curing time. It is worth noting that the specimen composed of 20% LF and 23% RM (D20%LF+23%RM) demonstrated a maximum UCS value of 4.72 MPa after 90 days of curing, which indicates that it has the strongest ability to resist deformation. The strength of the specimen cured for 90 days was 1.4 times higher than that of the specimen cured for 7 days (1.97 MPa). Furthermore, the toxic concentration and radionuclide index of LF-RMS were significantly reduced compared to those of pure RM. The overall concentration of heavy metals in the D20%LF+23%RM specimen decreased by more than 60% after curing for 28 days. The internal irradiation index and the external irradiation index decreased by 1.63 and 1.69, respectively. The hydration products in LF-RMS play a key role in the solidification of heavy metals, and the alkaline environment provided by RM also contributes to the precipitation and replacement of heavy metals. In this study, red mud, fly ash and lime were used to modify silty soil. The central tenets of sustainable development may be achieved through the reuse of RM as a road filler.

A pilot-scale study and evaluation of the melting process and vitrification characteristics of electroplating sludge by oxygen enrichment melting

Melting/vitrification is an effective method for harmless and rapid disposal of electroplating sludge (EPS) on a large scale. In our work, oxygen enrichment melting was proposed to reduce the high energy consumption during EPS melting. The melting and vitrification process of EPS can be divided into water evaporation, chemical decomposition and formation, crystal phase transition and vitrification. The addition of quartz sand (QS) promotes silicate formation and the crystal phase transition process, resulting the highest value vitrification rate (99.54%) of EPS slag. The results of heavy metal leaching of both water-quenched and air-cooled slags meet the national standard. The increase of oxygen concentration reduces the operation cost by 48.3%. The operation cost continues to reduce when the QS addition is 5%, wherein the lowest operation cost was 217.23 dollars/ton EPS. The emissions of SO2 and NOx with the addition of 5% of QS are the lowest among all experiment conditions. All results indicate that the oxygen enrichment melting technology is a promising method. 5% of QS addition during EPS melting with 90% oxygen concentration is the best operation condition in terms of the vitrification rate, heavy metal solidification and leaching, flue gas emission, and operation cost.

Experimental study on the stabilization and anti-seepage treatment of lead and zinc elements in heavy metal tailings pond using cement slurry containing heavy metal stabilizing agent

The release of heavy metal elements in heavy metal tailings ponds not only causes environmental pollution but also poses potential hazards to human health. Therefore, it is of great significance to stabilize heavy metals and apply anti-seepage treatment to tailings ponds. In this paper, the tailings in the Shenxiandong lead-zinc tailings pond in Yunnan Province, Southwest China, were analyzed. The adsorption effects of different natural stabilizing agents on lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in tailings were investigated. Orthogonal and modification experiments were used to identify the most effective stabilizing agent. This agent was then combined with a high-pressure rotary jet cement slurry to investigate the properties of the resulting consolidation body and its effect on heavy metal solidification. The results show that the tailings are more likely to release heavy metal elements into the environment. The results of the orthogonal experiments show that the stabilizing agent CCA, which is a combination of fly ash, attapulgite, and Na-bentonite in a 2:1:2 ratio, effectively adsorbs Pb and Zn elements in the tailings. The stabilizing agent CCAPT is created by modifying CCA with 7% H3PO4 at pH of 12 and heat treating at 200 °C. CCAPT demonstrates a 97.2% improvement in stabilization efficiency for Pb and a 94.1% improvement for Zn compared to CCA. The combination of CCAPT and cement slurry resulted in a 25.6% increase in compressive strength and a 29.5% decrease in permeability coefficient compared to the cement slurry formed consolidation body. The core-flooding experiment shows that the residual leachate after consolidation of “5% CCAPT + cementitious slurry” contains only 35.6 μg/L of Pb and 29.2 μg/L of Zn. These concentrations are significantly lower than the national emission requirements. This study presents an experimental foundation for further investigation into the use of high-pressure jet grouting technology to seal tailings ponds.
