Health status and ergonomics education: A comparison between student nurses and first-year nursing staff.

To (a) compare student nurses' health status and levels of ergonomics knowledge and awareness to those of first-year nursing staff and (b) investigate the association between nurses' ergonomic compliance and health status with their educational preparedness. This cohort study compared ergonomics awareness and knowledge, and health status of nurses when they were students and after their first-year working in medical facilities. In total, 133 4th-year student nurses completed a survey; 45 of them completed a second survey after working 1 year in a medical facility. Their health status was compared over time using repeated-measures ANOVA. Correlation tests were used to analyse associations between ergonomics knowledge and awareness, health status, demographic variables and educational preparedness. Respondents in both surveys displayed weak knowledge of ergonomic principles significantly associated with increased pain intensity and educational preparedness. Ergonomics training should be expanded during nursing studies and first-year training to prevent long-term health disorders.

Working conditions of medical staff and psychosocial burden during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the example of a selected hospital

Nursing staff is a professional group with a high risk of developing health-related disorders. Depression, anxiety and insomnia are the most common symptoms reported by healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of these factors lead to a decrease in the quality of life, lower professional performance, cognitive abilities and increase the risk of various diseases among medical staff. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between selected aspects of the work environment and the health of nurses. Material and methods The study was conducted among 115 nurses employed in a hospital in the Podkarpackie Province. The study used the diagnostic survey method with the use of the interview technique. The research tool was the author's questionnaire. Results The study shows that the group of nurses did not differ from each other in terms of difficulties in concentrating and making decisions, as well as experiencing fear and anxiety while working with a patient with COVID-19. This may be related to getting used to the specificity of work, the intensity and frequency of long-term patient care. Work in the Temporary Covid Ward was not significantly related to lower mental health ratings, worse sleep quality or insomnia, which was indicated as a rare phenomenon (36.5%). The respondents pointed to a shortage of medical personnel (87.8%) and work in PPE (86.1%). Conclusions The pandemic had an impact on the health of nurses and male nurses during the pandemic. The most common health effects among nurses were dermatological problems caused by disinfection detergents, less often they were problems related to the urinary system. Nurses have knowledge in the field of prevention and taking care of their own health while working in a pandemic. Socio-demographic factors had an impact on the health status of nurses.

Background: Healthy lifestyle is important in promoting health and reducing risk of chronic diseases. Nurses’ lifestyle could be affected negatively by working night shifts or always rotating shifts, long working hours and high exposure to work-related stress. Purpose: This study aims to assess nurses’ lifestyle and factors associated with it. Methods: A cross-sectional design with an online survey was used in this study. The sample included 203 Jordanian nurses from four hospitals. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, while dietary habits were assessed using the Rapid Eating Assessment for Participants-Shortened Version. Physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Results: Nurses’ mean age was 32.7±5.66 years and on average, they have 8.27±5.63 years of experience. Approximately, 25% of nurses were tobacco smokers. The majority of nurses reported poor sleep quality (n = 174, 85.5%). Approximately, 58% of nurses were overweight or obese and 41.9% of nurses had poor dietary habits. Only 39.5% of nurses reported moderate or high levels of activity. Conclusion: Jordanian nurses’ lifestyle showed poor quality in most aspects. Implications for Nursing: Nurses should be aware of the importance of adopting a healthier lifestyle to prevent possible complications. Nurse leaders should consider the health status of nurses and prevent illnesses by encouraging a healthier lifestyle of nurses. Association Between Passive Smoking and Health Among Chinese Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

This study aimed to investigate the association between passive smoking and physical and psychological health in Chinese nurses. Participants of this cross-sectional study comprised 2,484 non-smoking nurses. Passive smoking and demographic information were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. Physical, psychological, and overall health status of nurses were measured using the Cornell Medical Index (CMI) health questionnaire. Multivariate-adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for nurses' health were estimated by exposure to passive smoking using unconditional logistic regression models. A total of 1,219 nurses (49.07%) were exposed to passive smoking. Of these, 609 (24.52%), 160 (6.44%), and 587 (23.63%) nurses had poorer physical, mental, and overall health, respectively. After adjusting for other confounding factors, compared with the non-passive smoking group, passive smoking was associated with poor physical (OR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.25–1.83), mental (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.07–2.07), and overall (OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.30–1.93) health of nurses, respectively. We also carried out subgroup analyses stratified by age, department, and professional title, which showed that most findings supported the main results. This study demonstrated that exposure to passive smoking was a risk factor for overall decreased physical and mental health status among Chinese nurses.

Perception Of Stress and Illness Among Nurses in Psychiatry

Homeostasis is important for maintaining balance and normal functioning of the organism. Allostatic mechanisms further help to establish this balance. If the body is under stress for a longer period, a complex condition in the body called allostatic load occurs. If such a load lasts longer, the risk of developing diseases increases significantly. This study was conducted anonymously with the aim of determining the health status of male and female nurses in the Neuropsychiatric hospital “Dr. Ivan Barbot” in Popovača and their exposure to everyday stressors in the workplace. The main purpose was to examine the relationship between stress and the health status of nurses in relation to gender, age, and seniority. A total of 142 nurses participated. The Health Questionnaire and Workplace Stress Questionnaire were used. The results showed that the most common diseases nurses suffer from are cardiovascular diseases, thyroid diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, and allergies. Women showed higher sensitivity to stress than men. The most common stressors faced by nurses in the workplace are inadequate personal income, inadequate workspace and material resources for work, lack of staff, daily contingencies, 24-hour responsibility, and administrative work. This study found an association between age and, consequently, work experience with the likelihood of illness, although both the healthy and the sick perceive equal levels of stress. One disadvantage of this study is that it covers a large area and deals with general issues, but it can certainly be a starting point for further research. Many questions remain open, which means there is a need for further research and study of the link between stress and illness.

Effect of Work-Family Conflict, Psychological Job Demand, and Job Control on the Health Status of Nurses.

Work–family conflicts (WFCs) are common in the healthcare sector and pose significant health risks to healthcare workers. This study examined the effect of WFCs on the health status and nurses’ leaving intentions in Taiwan. A self-administered questionnaire was used to survey 200 female nurses’ experiences of WFC from a regional hospital. Data on psychosocial work conditions, including work shifts, job control, psychological job demands, and workplace justice, were collected. Health conditions were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory-II and self-rated health. Leaving intentions were measured using a self-developed questionnaire. The participants’ average work experience was 6.79 (Standard Deviation (SD) = 5.26) years, their highest educational level was university, and work shifts were mostly night and rotating shifts. Approximately 75.5% of nurses perceived high levels of WFCs. Leaving intentions were correlated with WFCs (r = 0.350, p < 0.01) and psychological work demands (r = 0.377, p < 0.01). After adjusting for age, educational level, and work characteristics, high levels of WFCs were associated with poor self-rated health, and depression, but not associated with high leaving intentions. Nurses’ experiences of high levels of WFCs greatly affected their health status.

Interplay of occupational stress, sense of humor, and health status among nurses working at hospitals in Ahvaz.

Sense of humor constitutes a part of everyday life and work and an indispensable part of healthcare. However, the relationship between sense of humor and nursing occupational health and stress is yet to be studied in Iran. This study aimed to analyze the interplay of demographic factors, occupational stress, sense of humor, and health status of nurses working at the hospitals affiliated with the Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Iran. In this descriptive-analytical study, the statistical population consisted of 203 nurses. Occupational stress was assessed using the Iranian version of the Effort-Reward-Imbalance (ERI) Questionnaire. The Sense of Humor Questionnaire (SHQ) and the Iranian version of the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) were employed to assess the sense of humor and physio-psychological health, respectively. Data collected were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. 81% (n=164) of the participants had an “external effort” (E) and “reward” (R) ratio greater than 1, indicating very high occupational stress. 39% (n=79) nurses with high occupational stress displayed their commitment to the workplace. Approximately 42% (n=85) of nurses were suffering from health problems. The mean humor score of participants was 2.90±0.41. Major life events over the past 3 months (p<0.01), weekly working hours (p<0.01), high occupational stress (p<0.01), and sense of humor (p<0.01) were determined to be significant predictors of nurses' health problems. Decision-makers are recommended to reduce nursing working hours through work shift management in order to maintain nurses' health status and reduce their occupational stress. In addition, hospital directors should promote a sense of humor in hospital environments with the help of culture-building practices, comedy books, music CDs, and training courses.

Self-rated health and general procrastination in nurses: a cross-sectional study.

Introductionnurses are responsible for taking care of the health of the general public. Nurses´ own health is among the important factors affecting the quality of patient care. Self-Rated Health (SRH) is one of the indicators used extensively in health research for the assessment of the health status of individuals. The present study was conducted to evaluate self-rated health and its relationship with general procrastination in nurses.Methodsthe present cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019 on 305 Iranian nurses selected by stratified random sampling. The relationship of self-rated health with procrastination was determined using an ordinal logistic regression analysis after adjustments for personal and occupational factors.Resultsself-rated health was poor/bad in 11.3% of the nurses, fair in 23.7%, good in 34.3% and excellent in 30.7%. After adjustments for personal and occupational factors, a significant relationship was observed between procrastination and self-rated health (OR=0.95; 95%CI 0.92, 0.98).Conclusionthe results showed an unfavorable health status in nurses. Given the significant relationship between procrastination and poor self-rated health in nurses, it is essential to consider this relationship for improving nurses´ health.

Level of Stress at Nurses Working in Emergency Clinic and Central Intensive Care: University Clinical Centre of Kosovo

Background: Emergency Clinic (EC) and Central Intensive Care (CIC) are high-stress environments that directly affect the health status of nurses. Methods: The aim of this study was to assess the level of stress at nurses working in the Emergency Clinic and nurses working in the Central Intensive Care. The study included 90 nurses, 45 nurses working in Emergency Clinic and 45 nurses working in Central Intensive Care. The study applied the Emergency Nurse Stress Questionnaire as an instrument to gather the data. This questionnaire was adopted from the Operational Police Stress Questionnaire in order to serve for the function and aim of the present study. Results: Nurses’ cohort-age ranged from 20 to 62 years. The largest proportion of respondents 40 (44.4%) was in the 20 - 30 age group, 58 (64.4%) were married, 60 (66.6%) hold bachelor degree and (33.3%) were with secondary school educational level. In terms of work-related fatigue, significant difference was found in working hours, participants reported that there was a significant difference in fatigue between 12 hours shift nurses (61 ± 10.5) compared to 8 hours nurses (41 ± 23.6) with P < 0.001. Results indicated that a vast majority of participants reported moderate to high levels of stress (81% of participants). There was no significant difference in the level of stress between the two groups of participants. There were also no significant differences compared to their demographic characteristics. Conclusion: These findings emphasize the role of using and assuring adequate strategies for ensuring quality management and finding ways of facilitating the increase in the number of nursing staff in these two departments because workplace overload and fatigue are potential factors that increase nurses’ stress levels.

Health status of clinical nurses and correlation factors with occupational low back pain

Objective To investigate the health status of clinical nurses and nurses with occupational low back pain (OLBP) and its influencing factors. Methods Using convenience sampling method, 1 279 clinical nurses from 7 ClassⅢ Grade A hospitals in 6 cities of China were investigated by using Chinese Version of Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (CRMDQ) , the MOS Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and Visual Assimilation Scale (VAS) from April to October 2016 to understand the health status of nurses with OLBP and the related influencing factors. By comparing with the domestic norms, the health status of nurses with OLBP and the influence of different demographic characteristics on the health status of nurses with OLBP were analyzed, and the correlation between the functional disorders and health status of nurses with OLBP was analyzed. Results The incidence of low back pain in clinical nurses was 91.0% (1 164/1 279) , and the scores of each dimensions of health status were lower than the national norm (n=8 448) . Nine factors, such as sex, age, marital status, fertility status, working life, department, night shift frequency, pain degree and pain frequency, can affect the health status of nurses with low back pain in varying degrees. The nurses with low back pain got the total score of (41.60±5.72) from the CRMDQ and the scores of the 8 dimensions in SF-36 were all lower than the national norm, with statistical differences (P<0.01) . The results of correlation analysis showed that nurses' lumbar vertebral dysfunction was negatively correlated with all dimensions of health status (P < 0.01) . Conclusions The factors influencing the health status of nurses with low back pain include many aspects. It is suggested to improve the occupational environment, strengthen occupational protection, prevent and alleviate the OLBP of nurses, so as to improve the health status of clinical nurses. The health and health behaviours of Australian metropolitan nurses: an exploratory study.

BackgroundNurses make up the largest component of the health workforce and provide the majority of patient care. Most health education is delivered by nurses, who also serve as healthy living and behavioural role models. Anything that diminishes their health status can impact their credibility as role models, their availability and ability to deliver quality care, and is potentially disadvantageous for the health of the population.Study aims were to investigate nurses’ overall health and the presence of chronic disease; to describe nurses’ health-related behaviours and to compare them to those of the general population, with both groups matched by age and gender.MethodsCross-sectional descriptive paper-based survey of nurses from two Sydney metropolitan hospitals using established instruments and questions and measurements taken with standardised methods.ResultsThis nursing sample (n = 381) had a mean age of 39.9 (SD 11.7, range 20–67) years, Most (n = 315; 82.7 %) were female, worked full-time (80.0 %), and were shift workers (93.0 %). The majority (94.0 %) indicated good, very good or excellent health, despite 42.8 % indicating they had chronic disease. The most common risk factors for chronic disease were inadequate vegetable (92.6 %) and fruit intake (80.1 %), overweight and obesity (44.0 %) and risky alcohol intake (34.7 %); health screening behaviours were not ideal. Aside from overweight and obesity, these risk factors were more prevalent in nurses than the equivalent group of the New South Wales population, particularly for risky alcohol intake which was much more common in female nurses and most marked in those aged under 35 years. However, 80 % met the guidelines for physical activity, more than the equivalent group of the New South Wales population.ConclusionThere are early ‘warning signs’ concerning the health status of nurses. Despite perceiving current good health, support is required for nurses to prevent future chronic disease, particularly in the areas of nutrition and alcohol intake. With these concerns, the nursing workforce ageing and demands for care increasing, it is now time to implement health enhancing strategies for nurses.

일부 간호사의 근무환경에 따른 직업적 손상 및 신체적·정신적 건강상태 비교

본 연구는 간호사들의 근무환경에 따른 직업적 손상 및 신체적, 정신적 건강상태를 비교분석하기 위해 실시되었다. 서울의 한 대학병원에 근무하는 192명의 간호사를 조사대상으로 하였다. 근무환경과 직업적 손상에 따른 건강상태의 각각의 범주를 분석한 결과 신체적, 정신적 건강에 의미있는 차이가 있음을 발견하였다. 교대근무는 고정근무에 비해 직업적 손상과 상당한 관련이 있었다. 또한 밤근무가 다른 근무형태에 비해 간호사들의 신체적, 정신적 건강에 부정적 영향을 미치고 있음이 확인되었다. 따라서 근무환경과 직업적 손상에 의한 그들의 건강상 문제를 고려하여 근무체계가 개발되어야 할 필요가 있다. 그리고 밤근무자들을 위한 추가적인 지원 및 효과적인 밤근무를 위한 연구를 해야 할 것이다. 【This study was conducted to compare and analyse work-related injuries, physical and mental health status of nurses according to working environment. The subjects were 192 nurses working at a university hospital in Seoul. After analyzing each categories of health status by working environment and work-related injuries, meaningful differences were found physical and mental health status. And shift work was significantly related to work-related injuries compared to non-shift work. In addition, it was confirmed that nurses have negative influences from night work in physical and mental health compared to other work pattern. Thus, it would be necessary to improve working system with considering their health problems caused by working environment and work-related injuries. And we will have to be a study for effective night work and additional support for night workers.】

The relationships among the occupational burnout, physiological and psychological health, and intent to leave

Background: A shortage of nurses exists in the Taiwanese health care system. Further understanding and finding solutions for intent to leave of nurses is urgent. However, studies examining the relationships among occupational burnout, health problems, and intent to leave are limited. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationships among occupational burnout, physiological and psychological health, and intent to leave of Taiwanese nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional survey using self-administrated questionnaires on 430 nurses working in five regional hospitals in northern Taiwan was conducted. Nurses’ occupational burnout was measured by the 21-item Occupational Burnout Inventory (OBI) with 5-point Likert scale for responses. Health status of nurses was measured by the 17-item Physical and Mental Wellness Inventory (PMWI) with 4-point Likert scale for responses. Nurses’ intent to leave was measured by 4 items with 5-point Likert Scale. Of the returned 424 surveys (responses rate 98.60%), 421 valid were subjected to analysis. Results: Scores on the four OBI subscales ranged from 48.97 for client-related burnout to 63.03 for personal burnout, with a mean score of 55.01 (SD = 18.85). Standardized scores on the two PMWI subscales ranged from 46.33 for physiological health problem to 47.85 for psychological health problem, with a mean score of 47.08 (SD = 22.04). The Standardized score of intent to leave was 43.86 (SD = 20.22). Occupational burnout was statistically significant with health problem (r = .70, p < 0.001) and intent to leave (r = .41, p < 0.001). Health problem was statistically significant with intent to leave (r = .47, p < 0.001). Independent t-test results revealed that nurses with high intent to leave reported significantly higher health problem (p < 0.001) and occupational burnout (p < 0.001) as compared with nurses with low intent to leave. Discussion: Nursing administrators should pay attention to nurses’ occupational burnout and health status to stabilize the nursing workforce. Conclusion: High levels of occupational burnout and health problems could increase nurses’ intent to leave.

Effect of psychological intervention on mental health of nurses in Supply Room

Objective To explore the effect of psychological intervention on mental health of nurses in Supply Room.Methods Twelve nurses in Supply Room in our hospital from March 2010 to March 2013 received the psychological intervention.The mental health status was scored and compared by Symptom Checkdist-90 (SCL-90) between pre-intervention and post-intervention.Results The scores of SCL-90 including somatization,obsessive-compulsive symptoms,interpersonal relationship sensitivity,depression,anxiety,hostile,terrorist,paranoid and psychosis were respectively (1.3 ± 0.3),(1.2 ± 0.2),(1.1 ± 0.1),(1.1 ±0.1),(1.2±0.2),(1.2±0.2),(1.0±0.1),(1.2±0.4),(1.1 ±0.2) after intervention,and lower than (1.8 ±0.4),(1.7±0.4),(1.5±0.4),(1.8±0.5),(1.8±0.5),(1.5±0.3),(1.4± 0.4),(1.5 ± 0.3),(1.4 ± 0.3) before intervention,and the differences were statistically significant (t =2.39,2.37,2.31,2.42,2.40,2.28,2.30,2.26,2.27,respectively; P＜0.05).Conclusions The effective psychological intervention can significantly improve the mental health status of nurses in Supply Room,improve the quality of work,and is worthy of clinical promotion. Correlation between workplace violence of hospital setting and psychological health status of nurses

Objective To study the workplace violence situation of hospital setting and explore its influence on the psychological health status of nurses.Methods A descriptive and correlative design was used.By cluster sampling,932 nurses from three hospitals in Shenzhen were recruited.The Workplace Violence in Hospital Setting Questionnaire and the Symptom Checklist 90 were used to measure the status of workplace violence in hospital setting and the level of psychological health status of nurses.The data were analysed with software SPSS version 12.0.Results The overall incidence rate of workplace violence was 64.3％ with psychological violence 86.0％,physical violence 20.9％,sexual violence 11.5％.The scores of psychological health and 9 dimensions score of nurses suffering from workplace violence were significantly higher than that of nurses without suffering from workplace violence ( Z =- 9.734,P ＜ 0.01 ).The more frequence of working violence they suffered,the higher the score of psychological health of nurses they have( P ＜0.01 ),and there was significantly difference in the frequence of psychological violence,the score of psychological health and its dimension(P ＜0.01 ).The frequence of physical violence and sexual violence was no correlation with the score of psychological health ( P ＞ 0.05 ).The more frequence of working violence is,the higher scores on psychological health status of nursing staff were.( P ＜ 0.05 ).Conclusions The overall incidence rate of workplace violence was high.The psychological health status of nurses suffering from workplace violence was lower than that of nurses without suffering from workplace violence.The more frequence of working violence,the poorer the psychological health status of nurses. Effects of the workplace violence on the sub-health status of nurses

To explore the effects of workplace violence on sub-health status of nurses and to provide the theoretical basis for preventing the workplace violence in the hospitals and improving the health status of nurses. A total of 679 nurses were selected by using stratified cluster sampling method. The Chinese version of workplace violence scale (WVS) and sub-health scale were used to measure workplace violence and sub-health status, respectively. The subjects with middle age (30-45 years) were found to have the highest incidence of physical assault (24.5%) and emotional assault (52.2%) as compared with other subjects (P<0.05). The prevalence (23.6%) of emotional assault of subjects with lowest education levels was significantly lower than that of others (P<0.05). The nurses with work shift were more vulnerable to emotional assault (45.1%) than those without work shift (36.8%)(P<0.05). The prevalence of the workplace violence of nurses in the psychiatric department and emergency department was significantly higher than that of nurses in other departments (P<0.05). The results of multivariate analysis showed that workplace violence was an important risk factor for sub-health status of nurses when other potential confounding factors were taken into account. The results of present study showed that workplace violence plays an important role in sub-health status of nurses after adjusting other potential confounding factors. It is important to develop the prevention strategies for reducing the incidence of workplace violence and improving the sub-health status of nurses.

Work‐related behaviour and experience pattern in nurses: impact on physical and mental health

Nursing is associated with high levels of emotional strain and heavy workloads. Changing working conditions raise the importance of investigating job satisfaction, stress and burnout and its consequences for nurses. The aim of the study was to investigate whether work-related behaviour and experience patterns are associated with mental and physical health status in nurses. A sample of 356 nurses in four German hospitals were interviewed using questionnaires regarding work-related behaviour and experience patterns, work stress, depression, anxiety and physical symptoms ('Work-related Behaviour and Experience Pattern'--AVEM and ERI). The main result of this study is that unhealthy work-related behaviour and experience patterns (i.e. the excessive ambitious type and the resigned type) are associated with reduced mental and physical health. Preventive, as well as intervention, strategies are needed that focus both on the individual as well as on working conditions.

The surveys of nurse mental health status and influencing factors in nurse-patient disputes

Objective To study the mental health status of nurses after nurse-patient dispute and its relevant factors. Methods After the nurse-patient dispute one week later, a case control study on 36 nurses in dispute group and some in normal control group was performed. The following three questionnaires are administered by each subject: the symptom sheck list 90 (SCL-90), the simplified coping style questionnaire (SCSQ) , the social support rating scale (SSRS). Results The total scores, the average value of the total scores in dispute group were significantly higher than those for the Chinese adult norm and the control group (P <0. 05 and P <0. 01). Coping style and social support were significantly associated with the status of the mental health (P <0. 05 and P <0.01). Conclusions The mental health levels of nurse in dispute group were obviously lower than common group, and obviously effected by coping style and social support.
