3D Galileo Reference Antenna Pattern for Space Service Volume Applications.

There is an increasing demand for navigation capability for space vehicles. The exploitation of the so-called Space Service Volume (SSV), and hence the extension of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) from terrestrial to space users, is currently considered a fundamental step. Knowledge of the constellation antenna pattern, including the side lobe signals, is the main input for assessing the expected GNSS signal availability and navigation performance, especially for high orbits. The best way to define and share this information with the final GNSS user is still an open question. This paper proposes a novel methodology for the definition of a high-fidelity and easy-to-use statistical model to represent GNSS constellation antenna patterns. The reconstruction procedure, based on antenna characterization techniques and statistical learning, is presented here through its successful implementation for the "Galileo Reference Antenna Pattern (GRAP)" model, which has been proposed as the reference model for the Galileo programme. The GRAP represents the expected Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) variation for the Galileo FOC satellites, and it is obtained by processing the measurements retrieved during the characterization campaign performed on the Galileo FOC antennas. The mathematical background of the model is analyzed in depth in order to better assess the GRAP with respect to different objectives such as improved resolution, smoothness and proper representation of the antenna pattern statistical distribution. The analysis confirms the enhanced GRAP properties and envisages the possibility of extending the approach to other GNSSs. The discussion is complemented by a preliminary use case characterization of the Galileo performance in SSV. The accessibility, a novel indicator, is defined in order to represent in a quick and compact manner, the expected Galileo SSV quality for different altitudes and target mission requirements. The SSV characterization is performed to demonstrate how simply and effectively the GRAP model can be inserted into user analysis. The work creates the basis for an improved capability for assessing Galileo-based navigation in SSV according to the current knowledge of the antenna pattern.

Python toolbox for android GNSS raw data to RINEX conversion

Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data collected from Android devices have gained increasing importance in various applications, ranging from geospatial positioning to environmental monitoring. However, the lack of standardized tools for converting Android GNSS raw data into receiver independent exchange (RINEX) format poses a significant challenge for researchers and practitioners. In response to this need, we present a comprehensive Python toolbox designed to streamline the conversion process and enhance the usability of Android GNSS data. The proposed toolbox leverages Python’s versatility to provide a user-friendly interface for converting Android GNSS raw data into the widely adopted RINEX format. Key features include robust data parsing algorithms, support for multiple GNSS constellations, and compatibility with diverse Android device configurations. Furthermore, the toolbox’s open-source nature encourages community collaboration and allows for continual improvement and adaptation to emerging GNSS technologies. We anticipate that this Python toolbox will serve as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners working with Android GNSS data, facilitating standardized data interchange and promoting reproducibility in GNSS-based studies.

INS aided spoofing detection of high dynamic GNSS receiver for launch vehicle applications: A loosely coupled approach

Launch vehicle applications require highly accurate and reliable navigation systems that can withstand the high dynamic conditions of the launch and flight phases. GNSS-aided INS (Inertial Navigation System) is the most popular solution for launch vehicle navigation. However, the accuracy of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers can be compromised by malicious spoofing attacks, which can result in significant safety risks and mission failure. This paper presents a method for identifying and mitigating the spoofing attacks on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers using the independent and simultaneous measurements of the Inertial Navigation System (INS). A state space approach is attempted in this paper with an extended Kalman Filter for identifying the spoofed signals. The well-established method of integrating INS and GNSS data for navigation accuracy improvement is taken as the baseline of this algorithm. The proposed method is an extension of a loosely coupled integration algorithm already established for fusing INS and GNSS data. The extended Kalman filter estimated position and velocity of the receiver is used along with the satellite position and velocity computed from ephemeris to find out the range and range rate of each of the satellites to the receiver. The difference between the estimated range and range rate against the measured range and range rate is considered as filter residual. The filter residuals are taken as the parameter to identify the spoofing. The threshold of filter residuals for range and range rates is the critical parameter that decides the false isolation and missing detection. The threshold is decided based on the environment in which the receiver is operated, the dynamics expected, and the noise model. The algorithms envelopment and simulation studies are done. The simulation tests are completed using a GNSS constellation simulator with spoofed signals. The INS and GNSS error model, states selection, Kalman filter design, algorithm details, simulation tests, simulation results, advantages and disadvantages of the new algorithm, and future work are covered in this paper.

A compliance assessment of GNSS station networks in Serbia

Since the early 21st century, Global Positioning System (GPS) technology has dominated geodetic reference networks. Almost all countries established a permanent Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) station network to augment all available GNSS systems. By the end of 2005, Serbia completed the Active Geodetic Reference Network as a particular project of Serbia's Republic Geodetic Authority (RGA). Besides RGA, two private companies, Vekom and Geotaur, have established permanent station networks. This paper assesses the compliance of all the three networks, and network results are evaluated against the spatial distance determined by classical geodetic methods. When all available GNSS constellations are utilized, NAVSTAR, GLONASS, BEIDOU, and GALILEO, in the processing procedure, the established networks in Serbia align within a margin of about 3 mm across all coordinate axes. The results obtained within the research indicate that by using GNSS networks, it is possible to provide the coordinates of the points for the establishment of the national spatial reference system of Serbia, the reference system in almost all engineering fields, reference systems for the maintenance works of the real estate cadastre, and it is also possible to provide coordinates of points that can be used to define local, national, and world reference heights surfaces.

Assessment of Multi-GNSS RT-PPP Services for the Antarctic Region

The international service that ensures access to data and products of global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs), known as the IGS, runs a real-time service (RTS) project to support users who need real-time access to precise products. Thanks to the RTS project, it is now possible to obtain real-time precise point positioning (RT-PPP) solutions. RT-PPP can be used in many real-time positioning applications that require a high level of accuracy, efficiency, and flexibility, including earth sciences, atmosphere sciences, marine sciences, natural hazards, and many more. In this study, we tested the impact of different worldwide RTS products and satellite configurations on the performance of RT-PPP accuracy, as well as convergence time, in the Antarctic’s challenging environment and extreme atmospheric conditions. We applied RT-PPP solutions using real-time precise products (satellite orbit/clock corrections, and biases to conduct the real-time PPP) provided by the IGS and NAVCAST (a real-time PPP positioning service) based on different GNSS constellations: GPS-only, Galileo-only, and a combination of GPS and Galileo. In this way, the performance of two different real-time (RT) services was compared with each other. At the same time, the effectiveness of the Galileo global navigation satellite system for RT-PPP was also tested, and the Galileo system’s contribution to the GPS-only RT-PPP solution was investigated. The PPP-WIZARD software was used to process the corrections and GNSS data from a reference station in the Antarctic region. Although GPS-only, Galileo-only, and multi-GNSS solutions obtained from both RT services were found to have very close accuracy to each other, the combination of the GPS and Galileo systems produced better accuracy than when using the GPS system alone. According to the numerical results of this study, it was concluded that the real-time PPP technique gave promising results in such a challenging environment of the Antarctic region. However, we also observe that the RT-PPP technique requires a stable and robust internet connection, which might limit its usefulness in remote regions. Overall, we found the RT-PPP technique to be a viable alternative to conventional relative GNSS positioning techniques, especially in areas where continuously operating reference networks or similar networks are lacking.

An improved robust filtering against observation and satellite state anomalies in centralized autonomous orbit determination for GNSS

Anomalies caused by the failure of ranging-related facilities and satellite orbit maneuvering will greatly affect the performance of Autonomous Orbit Determination (AOD) for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). In view of that, we proposed an improved robust filtering named as Resisting Anomaly Robust Filtering (RARF) to improve the precision and enhance the reliability of AOD in situation of anomalies in observations and states of satellites (i.e. orbit maneuvering). We performed the centralized AOD with the RARF for a hybrid GNSS constellation using simulated observations, and analyzed its performance in cases of no anomaly, anomalies in observations only and anomalies in states of satellites only. The experimental results indicate that: (1) With anomalies in observations only, the RARF is much more robust than the extended Kalman filter (EKF), and results of AOD with the RARF are entirely free from abnormal observations; (2) In the situation of anomalies in states of satellites only, the precision of AOD with the RARF can reach to the order of 10 m after 1.5 h orbit recovery if an anchor is available. As the solving time extends, the precision of AOD can be up to dm level.

Trailing Equatorial Plasma Bubble Occurrences at a Low-Latitude Location through Multi-GNSS Slant TEC Depletions during the Strong Geomagnetic Storms in the Ascending Phase of the 25th Solar Cycle

The equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) are depleted plasma density regions in the ionosphere occurring during the post-sunset hours, associated with the signal fading and scintillation signatures in the trans-ionospheric radio signals. Severe scintillations may critically affect the performance of dynamic systems relying on global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-based services. Furthermore, the occurrence of scintillations in the equatorial and low latitudes can be triggered or inhibited during space weather events. In the present study, the possible presence of the EPBs during the geomagnetic storm periods under the 25th solar cycle is investigated using the GNSS-derived total electron content (TEC) depletion characteristics at a low-latitude equatorial ionization anomaly location, i.e., KL University, Guntur (Geographic 16°26′N, 80°37′E and dip 22°32′) in India. The detrended TEC with a specific window size is used to capture the characteristic depletion signatures, indicating the possible presence of the EPBs. Moreover, the TEC depletions, amplitude (S4) and phase scintillation (σφ) indices from multi-constellation GNSS signals are probed to verify the vulnerability of the signals towards the scintillation effects over the region. Observations confirm that all GNSS constellations witness TEC depletions between 15:00 UT and 18:00 UT, which is in good agreement with the recorded scintillation indices. We report characteristic depletion depths (22 to 45 TECU) and depletion times (28 to 48 min) across different constellations confirming the triggering of EPBs during the geomagnetic storm event on 23 April 2023. Unlikely, but the other storm events evidently inhibited TEC depletion, confirming suppressed EPBs. The results suggest that TEC depletions from the traditional geodetic GNSS stations could be used to substantiate the EPB characteristics for developing regional as well as global scintillation mitigation strategies.

Multi-orbit lunar GNSS constellation design with distant retrograde orbit and Halo orbit combination

The Moon is the closest natural satellite to mankind, with valuable resources on it, and is an important base station for mankind to enter deep space. How to establish a reasonable lunar Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to provide real-time positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services for Moon exploration and development has become a hot topic for many international scholars. Based on the special spatial configuration characteristics of Libration point orbits (LPOs), the coverage capability of Halo orbits and Distant Retrograde Orbit (DRO) in LPOs is discussed and analyzed in detail. It is concluded that the Halo orbit with a period of 8 days has a better coverage effect on the lunar polar regions and the DRO has a more stable coverage effect on the lunar equatorial regions, and the multi-orbital lunar GNSS constellation with the optimized combination of DRO and Halo orbits is proposed by combining the advantages of both. This multi-orbital constellation can make up for the fact that a single type of orbit requires a larger number of satellites to fully cover the Moon, using a smaller number of satellites for the purpose of providing PNT services to the entire lunar surface. We designed simulation experiments to test whether the multi-orbital constellations meet the full lunar surface positioning requirements, and compare the coverage, positioning, and occultation effects of the four constellation designs that pass the test, and finally obtain a set of well-performing lunar GNSS constellations. The results indicate that the multi-orbital lunar GNSS constellation combining DRO and Halo orbits can cover 100% of the Moon surface, provides there are more than 4 visible satellites at any time on the Moon surface, which meets the navigation and positioning requirements, and the Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP) value is stable within 2.0, which can meet the demand for higher precision Moon surface navigation and positioning.

Impact of the GPS orbital dynamics on spurious interannual Earth deformation

SUMMARY Global Positioning System (GPS) daily position time-series have a standard precision of a few millimetres. However, GPS position series contain large temporal correlations that impede the observation of subtle interannual Earth deformation. We show that the specific configuration of the GPS constellation, compared to other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), contributes to the temporal correlation. Based on the analysis of observed and simulated GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou orbits, we determine that the GPS orbital dynamics are more prone to interannual drifts caused by their higher sensitivity to the lunisolar gravitational resonance. This leads to substantial changes in the observation geometry over time, which, combined with mismodelled station-dependent systematic errors, results in a larger temporal correlation for GPS position time-series. Improving the weighting of the GPS observations may mitigate the effect of geometry, which is absent in other GNSS constellations.

Role of Multi-Constellation GNSS in the Mitigation of the Observation Errors and the Enhancement of the Positioning Accuracy

Using Precise point positioning (PPP) technique can help to reach decimeters accuracy for positioning by using one receiver only. Since it set to track Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Recently BeiDou and Galileo systems have been devolved periodically and increasing the number of working satellites. Addition to those all-global Navigation systems is able to receive triple frequency signals. The effect of using Multi constellation of GNSS and combination of different systems with each other’s need to be investigated. In this paper, four Multi GNSS EXPERIMENT (MGEX) stations with 24 hours observation files and 30 second interval time during a 1 week of averaged data of January 2020 (2134 GPS week) are used to investigate the accuracy of using combined solution of GNSS with 12 cases of study. Data were processed by PPPH program. To investigate the effect of using the different GNSS combinations while using the PPP method, contrast experiments have been tested by mixing dual frequency ionospheric-free PPP models in static mode with G only, GLO only, G + GLO, G+ B, GLO+B, G+GAL, GLO+GAL, GLO+B+GAL, GNSS, G +GAL+B, G+GLO+B and G+GLO+GAL combination cases, where G refers to GPS, GLO refers to GLONASS, GAL refers to Galileo and B refers to BeiDou. The results show that the combined GPS and Galileo observation in PPP solution improves the convergence time and gives the shortest convergence time of the 12 study cases with average value 53 minute and with minimum value 35 minute. By comparing the root mean square error (RMS) values, the combination of G+GL+B had the minimum RMS error in North and East direction with minimum value 1.2 cm, maximum value 1.8 cm and average value1.45 cm. And the combination of GLO+GAL+B had the minimum RMS errors in up directions with average value 2.775 cm and minimum 2.775 cm and maximum 4.5 cm. In conclusion, the results indicate that the combination of different GNSS can give more accurate solution of the PPP. The combined PPP has shown an improvement in the convergence time in the case of using combined of G and GAL observation, while the positioning accuracy after convergence has no shown significant improvement. The result of G+GAL+B give the minimum RMS error in North and East direction and the combination of GLO+GAL+B give the minimum RMS errors in up directions.

An Increase of GNSS Data Time Rate and Analysis of the Carrier Phase Spectrum

Natural hazards and geomagnetic disturbances can generate a combination of atmospheric and ionospheric waves of different scales. The carrier phase of signals of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) can provide the highest efficiency to detect and study the weak ionospheric disturbances in contrast to total electron content (TEC) and TEC-based indices. We consider the border between the informative part of the carrier phase spectrum and the uninformative noises—the deviation frequency—as the promising means to improve the GNSS-based disturbance detection algorithms. The behavior of the deviation frequency of the carrier phase spectra was studied under quiet and disturbed geomagnetic conditions. The results showed that the deviation frequency value increases under magnetic storms. This effect was revealed for all GNSS constellations and signals regardless the GNSS type, receiver type/make and data rate (50 or 100 Hz). For the 100 Hz data, the most probable values of the deviation frequency grouped within ~28–40 Hz under quiet condition and shifted to ~37–48 Hz during the weak geomagnetic storms. Additionally, the lower values of deviation frequency of ~18–25 Hz almost disappear from the distribution of the deviation frequencies as it becomes narrower during geomagnetic storms. Considering that the small-scale irregularities shift the deviation frequencies, we can use this indicator as a “red alert” for weakest small-scale irregularities when the deviation frequency reaches ~35–50 Hz.

Evaluation of spaceborne GNSS-R based sea surface altimetry using multiple constellation signals

Comparisons between different global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals and GNSS-reflectometry (GNSS-R) satellite systems can provide valuable suggestions for future development of the GNSS-R instrument and signal processing method. This article evaluates the ocean altimetry performance of multiple GNSS constellation signals using raw intermediate frequency data collected by Cyclone GNSS (CYGNSS) and TechDemoSat-1 (TDS-1) satellites. Data used for the evaluation include observations of GPS L1, Galileo E1, and BDS B1 band signal. The specular point position and the ground-truth bistatic delay are calculated through the HALF method. After ionospheric, tropospheric, and tide corrections, the sea surface height can be retrieved; and then the height is compared with the DTU18 mean sea surface model derived one. Based on the GNSS-R satellite-collected observations, an optimal incoherent integral duration is determined. By making use of the optimal duration, the CYGNSS-based ranging delay estimating accuracy can reach up to 2.38 m, 1.98 m, and 1.91 m for GPS, Galileo and BDS, respectively; and the TDS-1 based one can reach up to 5.46 m and 3.84 m for GPS and Galileo, respectively. The results can provide suggestion on the strategies of multi-constellation observations fusion to improve the altimetry accuracy.

A Survey on Low-Power GNSS

With the miniaturization of electronics, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers are getting more and more embedded into devices with harsh energy constraints. This process has led to new signal processing challenges due to the limited processing power on battery-operated devices and to challenging wireless environments, such as deep urban canyons, tunnels and bridges, forest canopies, increased jamming and spoofing. The latter is typically tackled via new GNSS constellations and modernization of the GNSS signals. However, the increase in signal complexity leads to higher computation requirements to recover the signals; thus, the trade-off between precision and energy should be evaluated for each application. This paper dives into low-power GNSS, focusing on the energy consumption of satellite-based positioning receivers used in battery-operated consumer devices and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors.We briefly overview the GNSS basics and the differences between legacy and modernized signals. Factors dominating the energy consumption of GNSS receivers are then reviewed, with special attention given to the complexity of the processing algorithms. Onboard and offloaded (Cloud/Edge) processing strategies are explored and compared. Finally, we highlight the current challenges of today’s research in low-power GNSS.

Maritime Moving Target Joint Localization and Kinematic State Estimation Using GNSS-Based Multistatic Radar

A global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-based multistatic radar is explored for target localization and kinematic state estimation. Since any point on the earth can be illuminated by a minimum of four satellites of each GNSS constellation at any time, GNSS-based passive radars can be inherently considered multistatic radars. In this paper, a method for jointly estimating the target position and velocity by utilizing both the time delays and Doppler shifts has been proposed, and an analytical accuracy analysis is also provided. In the new method, the bistatic range and Doppler for each path are firstly estimated by the range-Doppler (RD) method, and then by using the bistatic ranges and Doppler shifts. The least squares method is applied to estimate the target position and velocity simultaneously. Compared with the precedent target localization and velocity estimation method, the proposed method achieves a better estimation result with simple procedures. Simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Implementation and Performance Analysis of Constellation Dynamic Selection in Multi-Constellation RAIM.

Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) plays a crucial role in many fields, such as aerospace and transportation. Integrity is the measure of trust used in GNSS positioning especially in safety-critical applications. Advanced receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (ARAIM), taking full advantage of multi-constellation GNSS, shows huge potential to provide vertical navigation in civil aviation en route navigation and terminal approaches. However, the multi-constellation ARAIM also greatly exposes computational complexity and potential performance hazards in fault modes determination and fault-tolerant positioning. From the perspective of integrity risk control, rather than the pursuit of better positioning accuracy blindly for safety-critical applications, the concept of constellation dynamic selection is proposed and implemented in ARAIM and the performance analysis is discussed in this paper. Only the best two constellations which have the best vertical geometry performance are involved in ARAIM calculation anytime anywhere. The proposed method shows superiority in both integrity availability and computational complexity in both simulations and actual GNSS signal experiments. While the computational complexity is less than 10% of that using four constellations, 100% availability under LPV-200 criteria can be achieved in worldwide coverage experiment. The proposed method also overcomes the shortcomings of ARAIM with two fixed constellations and shows good robustness under depleted scenarios. Furthermore, the statistics results from observation stations proved the applicability and generality of the proposed method under current developing GNSS constellations.

Long-Term Orbit Prediction and Deorbit Disposal Investigation of MEO Navigation Satellites

With the increase in satellites in the medium Earth orbit (MEO) region, there should be a focus on orbit safety in the MEO region. A safe orbit disposal strategy is necessary to maintain the sustainability of the MEO region. This paper focuses on long-term evolution modeling, safety analysis of MEO objects, and different disposal techniques for end-of-life BDS-2 MEO satellites. On the one hand, a long-term numerical evolution model is established, and mean equinoctial elements are adopted to propagate a long-term orbit. Long-term evolution for the MEO region over 100 years is carried out, including the Galileo, BDS, GPS, and GLONASS constellations. The earliest orbit intersection time with other global navigation satellite system (GNSS) constellations is put forward. On the other hand, a dynamic model and an optimization model for disposal orbit are established, which minimize the eccentricity growth within 200 years and the fuel consumption for maneuvering to the disposal orbit. The bounds for the disposal region of BDS MEO satellites are also proposed, which consider the measurement and control error of BDS MEO satellites and the eccentricity bounds for end-of-life BDS MEO satellites. A genetic algorithm is adopted to optimize the orbital elements for end-of-life BDS MEO satellites. In addition, two disposal cases, namely, upraising and reducing the orbit, for end-of-life BDS MEO satellites are simulated. The long-term evolutions for the disposal of orbital elements within 200 years are implemented, and the fuel consumption is calculated. The results show that the current MEO region is relatively safe and that the eccentricity is the most important factor that influences the long-term evolution of safety analysis for BDS MEO disposal orbits. Upraising the orbit is safe for end-of-life BDS MEO satellites. This investigation provides the theoretical foundation for investigating the long-term evolutionary mechanisms of the MEO region and references disposal strategy analysis for decommissioned navigation satellites, and the spent upper stages for other GNSS constellations.

Exploration of Multi-Mission Spaceborne GNSS-R Raw IF Data Sets: Processing, Data Products and Potential Applications

Earth reflected Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals can be received by dedicated orbital receivers for remote sensing and Earth observation (EO) purposes. Different spaceborne missions have been launched during the past years, most of which can only provide the delay-Doppler map (DDM) of the power of the reflected GNSS signals as their main data products. In addition to the power DDM products, some of these missions have collected a large amount of raw intermediate frequency (IF) data, which are the bit streams of raw signal samples recorded after the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and prior to any onboard digital processing. The unprocessed nature of these raw IF data provides an unique opportunity to explore the potential of GNSS Reflectometry (GNSS-R) technique for advanced geophysical applications and future spaceborne missions. To facilitate such explorations, the raw IF data sets from different missions have been processed by Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC, IEEC), and the corresponding data products, i.e., the complex waveform of the reflected signal, have been generated and released through our public open-data server. These complex waveform data products provide the measurements from different GNSS constellations (e.g., GPS, Galileo and BeiDou), and include both the amplitude and carrier phase information of the reflected GNSS signal at higher sampling rate (e.g., 1000 Hz). To demonstrate these advanced features of the data products, different applications, e.g., inland water detection and surface altimetry, are introduced in this paper. By making these complex waveform data products publicly available, new EO capability of the GNSS-R technique can be further explored by the community. Such early explorations are also relevant to ESA’s next GNSS-R mission, HydroGNSS, which will provide similar complex observations operationally and continuously in the future.

Signal quality and positioning performance of GPS/BDS-3/GLONASS/Galileo in polar regions

Growing activities in the Arctic and Antarctica call for more navigation and positioning services in these regions. The current GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) constellations, which have the capability of fully global positioning services, consist of GPS, BDS-3, GLONASS and Galileo. In this study, multi-GNSS observations of 2 stations from international GNSS monitoring and assessment system (iGMAS) and 10 stations from multi-GNSS experiment (MGEX) are selected to assess the signal quality and positioning performance of multi-GNSS in polar regions. After the fully operational global services of BDS-3 from July 31, 2020, this is the first time to assess the positioning performance of GPS/BDS-3/GLONASS/Galileo in polar regions. For BDS-3 and GPS, its number of visible satellites (NVS) is between 6 and 12 and position dilution of precision (PDOP) is approximately 2, which is slightly better than that of GLONASS and Galileo. As for signal to noise ratio (SNR) and multipath (MP) delay, each frequency of BDS/GPS/GLONASS/Galileo exhibits generally similar strength, and among them, the B2a signal of BDS-3 has stronger anti-multipath ability. In terms of positioning performance, the results from solution independent exchange (SINEX) are taken as the reference for more objective validation. For single-constellation, the precise point positioning (PPP) accuracy of BDS-3 is at the level of centimeters, which is equivalent to GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo. The multi-constellation PPP was analyzed with double/triple/quadruple-constellation combinations. Compared to single-constellation, the multi-constellation combination slightly improves positioning accuracy, and as the number of available satellites in multi-constellation combinations greatly increases, the convergence is accelerated.

Orbital Artifacts in Multi‐GNSS Precise Point Positioning Time Series

AbstractThe time series of station coordinates derived using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are affected by several technique errors, influencing the studies of the geophysical processes and phenomena. Using different GNSS constellations leads to the appearance of various artificial signals with amplitudes up to several millimeters. The presence of the GNSS system‐specific artifacts is demonstrated using the 2‐year long series of station coordinates and zenith total delay parameters for 15 stations using Precise Point Positioning algorithms. The most dominant orbital artifacts for Galileo appear with periods of 14.08 hr, 17.09 hr, 34.20 hr, 2.49 days, and ∼3.4 days. The corresponding signals for GLONASS appear with periods of 5.63 hr, 7.36 hr, 10.64 hr, 21.26 hr, 3.99 days, and ∼8 days. Moreover, when estimating discrete 24‐hr solutions from high‐rate GNSS data, high‐frequency signatures are under‐sampled, resulting in long‐term aliased periodic signals. Galileo is less vulnerable to the orbital signals than GPS or GLONASS. The difference is visible mainly for the East coordinate. The Galileo‐based daily estimates are up to 55% and 36% better than those delivered from GLONASS and GPS. The GPS orbital signals arise at the periods corresponding to the harmonics of the K1 tide, which leads to the inconsistency of the GPS‐based products with geophysical models reaching on average 12 mm for the K2 tidal term in the Up component. The magnitude of the orbital signals depends on the geographical location of the station and the geometry of the satellites' flybys. Finally, using a combination of GPS and Galileo increases the precision of estimates by 10% compared with the best‐case Galileo‐only solution.

High-Rate Attitude Determination of Moving Vehicles With GNSS: GPS, BDS, GLONASS, and Galileo

We investigate the long-term performance and improvement of high-rate multiconstellation Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) or multi-GNSS attitude determination in a dynamical environment and evaluate how much each GNSS contributes to such an improvement with applications to land vehicle navigation. We build a multiantenna GNSS system with three nondedicated receivers and conduct two experiments with quad-constellations in GNSS-friendly and GNSS-challenged environments on January 19 and 23, 2018, respectively. A high-grade inertial measurement unit (IMU) provides a reference of comparison for dynamic attitude solutions. In the static case, the global positioning system (GPS), BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS), and GLObal NAvigation Satellite System (GLONASS) single-constellation solutions have basically the same performance for both experiments. In the dynamic case, GPS achieves the best accuracy in the experiment on January 19, while on January 23, GPS and GLONASS achieve very similar accuracy and significantly outperform BDS in the pitch and roll components. The different dynamic performances of these single constellations are primarily attributed to their differences in observation noise level and satellite geometry strength. By combining GPS, BDS, GLONASS, and Galileo, the multi-GNSS solution performs significantly better than any single-constellation solution. The average improvements in the dynamic cases are 26.2%, 40.7%, and 36.0% on January 19 and 19.2%, 30.0%, and 36.2% on January 23 in the yaw, pitch, and roll components, respectively. The attitude solutions on January 19 are always better determined than on January 23 in the dynamic cases, which should clearly indicate the importance of combining multiple GNSS constellations and the benefit of more observed satellites and a stronger satellite geometry in GNSS-challenged environments. We also introduce the concept of “influence rate” and quantitatively analyze the contribution of each GNSS system to the combined attitude solution.
