Improved estimation of the underestimated GEDI footprint LAI in dense forests

ABSTRACT Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), with its ability to capture vegetation vertical profile, could be a unique technique for deriving Leaf Area Index (LAI). A global LAI product at 25-m spatial resolution was derived from the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) LiDAR data since 2019, but it was often significantly underestimated in dense forests. Here we explored the potential for improving the estimation of the underestimated GEDI LAI in dense forests by using the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) as auxiliary data to separate ground and canopy returns in the received waveform. Dense forests were defined as forests with high vegetation greenness (annual maximum NDVI ≥ 0.8). The newly estimated GEDI footprint LAI was first validated with the ground-measured LAI at two sites in Fujian, China, and the results showed that the underestimation was significantly reduced compared to the original GEDI LAI product (r increased from −0.55 to 0.81, RMSE decreased from 3.94 to 1.43, Bias decreased from 3.17 to 0.48). To evaluate whether the improvement was applicable to other areas and forest types, the newly estimated GEDI footprint LAI for the entire Fujian and Contiguous US (CONUS) was then compared to the consistent LAI among three widely used global LAI products. The comparison results demonstrated that the use of DEM as auxiliary data could largely reduce the underestimation of GEDI footprint LAI (In Fujian, RMSE decreased from 4.75 to 2.52, and Bias decreased from 4.61 to 0.58; in CONUS, RMSE decreased from 5.24 to 1.96, and Bias decreased from 5.1 to 0.73). Overall, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of correcting the large underestimation of GEDI footprint LAI in dense forests by utilizing DEM, which has an important influence on the results, as auxiliary data.

State-wide forest canopy height and aboveground biomass map for New York with 10 m resolution, integrating GEDI, Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2 data

Investigating the quantity of forest aboveground biomass (AGB) is crucial for understanding the role forests play in the global carbon cycle. The canopy height model (CHM) is a critical component in estimating AGB, as it provides a three-dimensional representation of the tree canopy. Traditional CHM estimation methods are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and expensive, particularly at large-scales. Remote sensing is a cost-effective and efficient alternative approach, providing valuable information over large areas in a timely manner. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) onboard the International Space Station is a space-based light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system designed to collect information on vertical structures of vegetation. One major problem with the collection of GEDI data is that it provides limited information over discrete ground samples, also known as footprints, and thus do not provide wall-to-wall gridded height products. The objective of this study was twofold: a) to integrate the GEDI LiDAR footprint heights with Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery to generate a 10 m wall-to-wall CHM map of New York State (NYS), USA for the year 2019 and b) to improve our previously generated AGB map (both accuracy and resolution) of NYS for the year 2019 by fusing Sentinel-2 multispectral, Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and the produced CHM. To generate the 10 m CHM map, the GEDI footprints height measurements were extrapolated using Sentinel-2 imagery and a random forest model. The CHM that was produced was assessed by using GEDI footprints that were not part of the training phase and were therefore independent (extrapolated). Comparing our 10 m CHM with the available global 30 m CHM map provided by Potapov et al. (2021) over NYS shows significant improvement not only in terms of spatial resolution, but also in terms of accuracy. The root mean square error (RMSE) of our 10 m CHM is 4.4 m while this value is 7.49 m for the 30 m CHM over NYS. Similarly, the R2 value for the 10 m CHM map is 0.74, while that of the 30 m CHM is 0.46. Finally, the integration of produced 10 m CHM, Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2 datasets were utilized to create a 10 m AGB map of NYS with the RMSE of 39.49 Mg/ha, and R2 of 0.65. The results demonstrate the potential of integrating GEDI, Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2 data for providing a valuable tool for large-scale mapping of forest canopy structure and biomass, which can help to inform forest management and carbon accounting efforts.

Accuracy evaluation and effect factor analysis of GEDI aboveground biomass product for temperate forests in the conterminous United States

ABSTRACT The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is expected to revolutionize the quantification of aboveground carbon at continental scales, through its unprecedented dense vertical observations of vegetation structure. As its primary task, GEDI recently introduced GEDI L4A, the 25 m near-global footprint aboveground biomass density (AGBD) product. As a global mission with significant policy and management applications, it is urgent to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of GEDI L4A and to analyze the factors affecting the product’s performance. In this study, the accuracy of GEDI L4A is assessed using co-registered airborne Lidar surveys collected during 2018 ~ 2019 and corresponding AGBD plots at 19 sites of the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). The analysis included 11 forest types and spanned 17 eco-climatic domains across the conterminous United States to ensure the representativeness and comprehensiveness of the evaluation result. The interplay of nine factors affecting GEDI L4A is quantified, including the simulated waveform strategy deviation (SWSD) used in GEDI L4A, canopy characteristics (tree height, crown size, and canopy cover), canopy heterogeneity (crown size standard deviation, tree height standard deviation, and tree density), and other factors (forest type and topographic slope). Results show that compared with NEON observations, GEDI L4A generally underestimates the AGBD (Bias: −31.65 Mg/ha), with a moderate relative error exhibited in 14 of 19 sites (%RMSE ranging from 19% to 50%). For half of the forest types, the threshold of the lowest accuracy requirement of AGBD products set by GCOS was met or was close to being met. Broadleaf forests with high AGBD values had the lowest %RMSE (less than 35%), while coniferous forests with low AGBD values had the highest %RMSE (over 50%). Among the different factors considered, the SWSD contributed the most to GEDI L4A’s accuracy, with a relative importance of 56.63%, and manifested the indirect impacts of canopy heterogeneity and canopy characteristics. The relative importance of canopy heterogeneity (32.40%) was the second highest after SWSD; it was also much higher than that of canopy characteristics (3.99%). These results indicate the limitation of using only relative heights as predictors in GEDI L4A due to limited representation of horizontal structure and vertical tree complexity within a footprint. The findings in this study are a step forward in GEDI L4A’s appropriate application and provide perspectives to aid its improvement.

Modelling above-ground biomass estimation using combination of vegetation height and forest canopy density at secondary peat swamp forest of Kalimantan

Rapid estimation of carbon stock, particularly carbon from Above-Ground Biomass (AGB) in a high-potential carbon forest, is required to assess potential carbon emission projects. Satellite imagery has been widely used as the main data source to rapidly estimate AGB. Canopy Height (CH) data from NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) and Forest Canopy Density (FCD) data from satellite Landsat 8 imagery are widely used to estimate AGB. An allometric model with multiple linear regression equations has been used to estimate the AGB value using both parameters of the FCD value and the CH value. 43 values of calculated AGB by non-destructive field survey located in a peat swamp forest area use as a training dataset to develop an allometric model. The CH and FCD indices performed several tests, and the test result met the requirements for developing allometric equations. The coefficient correlation (r) of CH and AGB from 43 sample plots is 0.546, indicating a moderate correlation. The coefficient correlation (r) for FCD and AGB is 0.267 which indicates a weak correlation. The validation test was carried out to assess AGB from the developed allometric model and AGB of field survey with a non-destructive method. The validation result of the allometric model has the value of coefficient correlation (r), RMSE, and R2, respectively 0.569; 22.235; and 0.324. In terms of allometric model validation, another forest with typical conditions, particularly basal area, the model’s AGB result, and the validated area have RMSE 46.506 and r value 0.664.

Modeling Uncertainty of GEDI Clear-Sky Terrain Height Retrievals Using a Mixture Density Network

Early spaceborne laser altimetry mission development starts in pre-phase A design, where diverse ideas are evaluated against mission science requirements. A key challenge is predicting realistic instrument performance through forward modeling at an arbitrary spatial scale. Analytical evaluations compromise accuracy for speed, while radiative transfer modeling is not applicable at the global scale due to computational expense. Instead of predicting the arbitrary properties of a lidar measurement, we develop a baseline theory to predict only the distribution of uncertainty, specifically for the terrain elevation retrieval based on terrain slope and fractional canopy cover features through a deep neural network Gaussian mixture model, also known as a mixture density network (MDN). Training data were created from differencing geocorrected Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) L2B elevation measurements with 32 independent reference lidar datasets in the contiguous U.S. from the National Ecological Observatory Network. We trained the MDN and selected hyperparameters based on the regional distribution predictive capability. On average, the relative error of the equivalent standard deviation of the predicted regional distributions was 15.9%, with some anomalies in accuracy due to generalization and insufficient feature diversity and correlation. As an application, we predict the percent of elevation residuals of a GEDI-like lidar within a given mission threshold from 60°S to 78.25°N, which correlates to a qualitative understanding of prediction accuracy and instrument performance.

On the NASA GEDI and ESA CCI biomass maps: aligning for uptake in the UNFCCC global stocktake

Earth Observation data are uniquely positioned to estimate forest aboveground biomass density (AGBD) in accordance with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) principles of ‘transparency, accuracy, completeness, consistency and comparability’. However, the use of space-based AGBD maps for national-level reporting to the UNFCCC is nearly non-existent as of 2023, the end of the first global stocktake (GST). We conduct an evidence-based comparison of AGBD estimates from the NASA Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation and ESA Climate Change Initiative, describing differences between the products and National Forest Inventories (NFIs), and suggesting how science teams must align efforts to inform the next GST. Between the products, in the tropics, the largest differences in estimated AGBD are primarily in the Congolese lowlands and east/southeast Asia. Where NFI data were acquired (Peru, Mexico, Lao PDR and 30 regions of Spain), both products show strong correlation to NFI-estimated AGBD, with no systematic deviations. The AGBD-richest stratum of these, the Peruvian Amazon, is accurately estimated in both. These results are remarkably promising, and to support the operational use of AGB map products for policy reporting, we describe targeted ways to align products with Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines. We recommend moving towards consistent statistical terminology, and aligning on a rigorous framework for uncertainty estimation, supported by the provision of open-science codes for large-area assessments that comprehensively report uncertainty. Further, we suggest the provision of objective and open-source guidance to integrate NFIs with multiple AGBD products, aiming to enhance the precision of national estimates. Finally, we describe and encourage the release of user-friendly product documentation, with tools that produce AGBD estimates directly applicable to the IPCC guideline methodologies. With these steps, space agencies can convey a comparable, reliable and consistent message on global biomass estimates to have actionable policy impact.

Evaluation of Tree-Growth Rate in the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve Using GEDI and Airborne-LiDAR Data

Loss of forest cover and derived effects on forest ecosystems services has led to the establishment of land management policies and forest monitoring systems, and consequently to the demand for accurate and multitemporal data on forest extent and structure. In recent years, spaceborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) missions, such as the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) instrument, have facilitated the repeated acquisition of data on the vertical structure of vegetation. In this study, we designed an approach incorporating GEDI and airborne LiDAR data, in addition to detailed forestry inventory data, for estimating tree-growth dynamics for the Laurentides wildlife reserve in Canada. We estimated an average tree-growth rate of 0.32 ± 0.23 (SD) m/year for the study site and evaluated our results against field data and a time series of NDVI from Landsat images. The results are in agreement with expected patterns in tree-growth rates related to tree species and forest stand age, and the produced dataset is able to track disturbance events resulting in the loss of canopy height. Our study demonstrates the benefits of using spaceborne-LiDAR data for extending the temporal coverage of forestry inventories and highlights the ability of GEDI data for detecting changes in forests’ vertical structure.

Computational tools for assessing forest recovery with GEDI shots and forest change maps

Tropical secondary forests are ecosystems of critical importance for protecting biodiversity, buffering primary forest loss, and sequestering atmospheric carbon. Monitoring growth and carbon sequestration in secondary forests is difficult, with inventory plots sampling <0.001% of secondary forests. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), a space-borne LiDAR sampler, provides billions of aboveground carbon density (ACD) estimates across the tropics. We fuse these carbon density estimates with a time series of forest change maps to identify their age since last deforestation and thus estimate the average rate of carbon sequestration in secondary forests across the Amazon biome. To our knowledge, this is the first estimate of these rates made using the new GEDI dataset. Moreover, this paper addresses key statistical and computational challenges of GEDI data fusion and analysis. We propagate both GEDI ACD and geolocation uncertainty to the regrowth rate estimate through a Monte Carlo approach, and we handle heteroskedasticity, outliers, and spatial autocorrelation using robust statistical methods. The large size of the GEDI dataset combined with the proposed Monte Carlo bootstrap can be highly computationally intensive, with a naive implementation taking over a month to complete. Nevertheless, we demonstrate the feasibility of our method by developing optimized open-source code that performs this computation on the 151 million quality-filtered GEDI shots available for the Amazon biome from April 2019–August 2021 in under 25 min in benchmark tests. By resolving these statistical and computational challenges with an efficient open-source pipeline, we create a standard approach that can be used more broadly in any work seeking to combine the GEDI dataset with high-resolution classification maps. Using this approach, we identify approximately 23, 000 GEDI samples of regrowing forest at least 60 m × 60 m wide across the Amazon biome and estimate a carbon sequestration rate of 1.86 MgC/ha/yr with a 95% empirical confidence interval of 1.75–1.97 MgC/ha/yr, with rates varying from 1.27 to 1.99 MgC/ha/yr across smaller subregions.

FORMS: Forest Multiple Source height, wood volume, and biomass maps in France at 10 to 30 m resolution based on Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) data with a deep learning approach

Abstract. The contribution of forests to carbon storage and biodiversity conservation highlights the need for accurate forest height and biomass mapping and monitoring. In France, forests are managed mainly by private owners and divided into small stands, requiring 10 to 50 m spatial resolution data to be correctly separated. Further, 35 % of the French forest territory is covered by mountains and Mediterranean forests which are managed very extensively. In this work, we used a deep-learning model based on multi-stream remote-sensing measurements (NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) lidar mission and ESA's Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellites) to create a 10 m resolution canopy height map of France for 2020 (FORMS-H). In a second step, with allometric equations fitted to the French National Forest Inventory (NFI) plot data, we created a 30 m resolution above-ground biomass density (AGBD) map (Mg ha−1) of France (FORMS-B). Extensive validation was conducted. First, independent datasets from airborne laser scanning (ALS) and NFI data from thousands of plots reveal a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.94 m for FORMS-H, which outperforms existing canopy height models. Second, FORMS-B was validated using two independent forest inventory datasets from the Renecofor permanent forest plot network and from the GLORIE forest inventory with MAE of 59.6 and 19.6 Mg ha−1, respectively, providing greater performance than other AGBD products sampled over France. Finally, we compared FORMS-V (for volume) with wood volume estimations at the ecological region scale and obtained an R2 of 0.63 with an MAE of 30 m3 ha−1. These results highlight the importance of coupling remote-sensing technologies with recent advances in computer science to bring material insights to climate-efficient forest management policies. Additionally, our approach is based on open-access data having global coverage and a high spatial and temporal resolution, making the maps reproducible and easily scalable. Canopy Height Mapping for Plantations in Nigeria Using GEDI, Landsat, and Sentinel-2

Canopy height data from the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission has powered the development of global forest height products, but these data and products have not been validated in non-forest tree plantation settings. In this study, we collected field observations of the canopy heights throughout oil palm plantations in Nigeria and evaluated the performance of existing global canopy height map (CHM) products as well as a local model trained on the GEDI and various Landsat and Sentinel-2 feature combinations. We found that existing CHMs fared poorly in the region, with mean absolute errors (MAE) of 4.2–6.2 m. However, the locally trained models performed well (MAE = 2.5 m), indicating that using the GEDI and optical satellite data can still be effective, even in a region with relatively sparse GEDI coverage. In addition to improved overall performance, the local model was especially effective at reducing errors for short (&lt;5 m) trees, where the global products struggle to capture the canopy height.

Evaluation and Comparison of ICESat-2 and GEDI Data for Terrain and Canopy Height Retrievals in Short-Stature Vegetation

Two space-borne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) missions, Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) and Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), have demonstrated high capabilities in extracting terrain and canopy heights in forest environments. However, there have been limited studies evaluating their performance for terrain and canopy height retrievals in short-stature vegetation. This study utilizes airborne LiDAR data to validate and compare the accuracies of terrain and canopy height retrievals for short-stature vegetation using the latest versions of ICESat-2 (Version 5) and GEDI (Version 2). Furthermore, this study also analyzes the influence of various factors, such as vegetation type, terrain slope, canopy height, and canopy cover, on terrain and canopy height retrievals. The results indicate that ICESat-2 (bias = −0.05 m, RMSE = 0.67 m) outperforms GEDI (bias = 0.39 m, RMSE = 1.40 m) in terrain height extraction, with similar results observed for canopy height retrievals from both missions. Additionally, the findings reveal significant differences in terrain and canopy height retrieval accuracies between ICESat-2 and GEDI data under different data acquisition scenarios. Error analysis results demonstrate that terrain slope plays a pivotal role in influencing the accuracy of terrain height extraction for both missions, particularly for GEDI data, where the terrain height accuracy decreases significantly with increasing terrain slope. However, canopy height has the most substantial impact on the estimation accuracies of GEDI and ICESat-2 canopy heights. Overall, these findings confirm the strong potential of ICESat-2 data for terrain and canopy height retrievals in short-stature vegetation areas, and also provide valuable insights for future applications of space-borne LiDAR data in short-stature vegetation-dominated ecosystems.

A new global C-band vegetation optical depth product from ASCAT: Description, evaluation, and inter-comparison

Active microwave measurements have the potential to estimate vegetation optical depth (VOD), an indicator related to vegetation water content and biomass. The Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT) provides long-term C-band backscatter data at vertical-vertical (VV) polarization from 2007. So far, very few studies have considered retrieving VOD from this active sensor. This study presents a new publicly released global long-term and continuous (2007–2020) C-band VOD dataset retrieved from the ASCAT observations, named the ASCAT INRAE-BORDEAUX or ASCAT IB VOD product. The retrieval algorithm is based on the Water Cloud Model (WCM) including the Ulaby bare soil model. The algorithm takes advantage of a multi-temporal (MT) retrieval method relying on a cost function where constraints to the retrieved parameters are implemented and a reanalysis soil moisture (SM) dataset from ERA5-Land is used as an input. The performance of ASCAT IB VOD was evaluated by inter-comparing it with ASCAT Technische Universität Wien (TUW), the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2), and VOD Climate Archive (VODCA) VOD products (the last two products are estimated from passive microwave observations). Results showed that ASCAT IB VOD presented the highest spatial correlation with aboveground biomass (R ∼ 0.83) and with the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) canopy height (R ∼ 0.84–0.85). In terms of temporal performance, ASCAT IB VOD had the highest correlation R values with leaf area index (LAI) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) in most parts of the globe from 2013 to 2018. This contrasts with AMSR2 VODs which correlated better with Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The new ASCAT-based VOD product on a global scale highlighted the potential benefit of combining active (namely ASCAT) and passive (namely AMSR2) VOD products for vegetation studies.

Satellite data reveals a recent increase in shifting cultivation and associated carbon emissions in Laos

Although shifting cultivation is the major land use type in Laos, the spatial-temporal patterns and the associated carbon emissions of shifting cultivation in Laos are largely unknown. This study provides a nationwide analysis of the spatial-temporal patterns of shifting cultivation and estimations of the associated carbon emissions in Laos over the last three decades. This study found that shifting cultivation has been expanding and intensifying in Laos, especially in the last 5 years. The newly cultivated land from 2016 to 2020 accounted for 4.5% (±1.2%) of the total land area of Laos. Furthermore, the length of fallow periods has been continuously declining, indicating that shifting cultivation is becoming increasingly intensive. Combining biomass derived from Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation and shifting cultivation maps and area estimates, we found that the net carbon emissions from shifting cultivation declined in 2001–2015 but increased in 2016–2020. The largest carbon source is conversion from intact forests to shifting cultivation, which contributed to 89% of the total emissions from 2001 to 2020. In addition, there were increased emissions from intensified use of fallow lands. This research provides useful information for policymakers in Laos to understand the changes in shifting cultivation and improve land use management. This study not only supports Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation reporting for Laos but also provides a methodology for tracking carbon emissions and removals of shifting cultivation.

A high-resolution canopy height model of the Earth

The worldwide variation in vegetation height is fundamental to the global carbon cycle and central to the functioning of ecosystems and their biodiversity. Geospatially explicit and, ideally, highly resolved information is required to manage terrestrial ecosystems, mitigate climate change and prevent biodiversity loss. Here we present a comprehensive global canopy height map at 10 m ground sampling distance for the year 2020. We have developed a probabilistic deep learning model that fuses sparse height data from the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) space-borne LiDAR mission with dense optical satellite images from Sentinel-2. This model retrieves canopy-top height from Sentinel-2 images anywhere on Earth and quantifies the uncertainty in these estimates. Our approach improves the retrieval of tall canopies with typically high carbon stocks. According to our map, only 5% of the global landmass is covered by trees taller than 30 m. Further, we find that only 34% of these tall canopies are located within protected areas. Thus, the approach can serve ongoing efforts in forest conservation and has the potential to foster advances in climate, carbon and biodiversity modelling.

Tree canopy extent and height change in Europe, 2001–2021, quantified using Landsat data archive

European forests are among the most extensively studied ecosystems in the world, yet there are still debates about their recent dynamics. We modeled the changes in tree canopy height across Europe from 2001 to 2021 using the multidecadal spectral data from the Landsat archive and calibration data from Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) and spaceborne Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) lidars. Annual tree canopy height was modeled using regression tree ensembles and integrated with annual tree canopy removal maps to produce harmonized tree height map time series. From these time series, we derived annual tree canopy extent maps using a ≥ 5 m tree height threshold. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) for both ALS-calibrated and GEDI-calibrated tree canopy height maps was ≤4 m. The user's and producer's accuracies estimated using reference sample data are ≥94% for the tree canopy extent maps and ≥ 80% for the annual tree canopy removal maps. Analyzing the map time series, we found that the European tree canopy extent area increased by nearly 1% overall during the past two decades, with the largest increase observed in Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, and the British Isles. However, after the year 2016, the tree canopy extent in Europe declined. Some regions reduced their tree canopy extent between 2001 and 2021, with the highest reduction observed in Fennoscandia (3.5% net decrease). The continental extent of tall tree canopy forests (≥ 15 m height) decreased by 3% from 2001 to 2021. The recent decline in tree canopy extent agrees with the FAO statistics on timber harvesting intensification and with the increasing extent and severity of natural disturbances. The observed decreasing tree canopy height indicates a reduction in forest carbon storage capacity in Europe.

Inferring alpha, beta, and gamma plant diversity across biomes with GEDI spaceborne lidar

Biodiversity-structure relationships (BSRs), which describe the correlation between biodiversity and three-dimensional forest structure, have been used to map spatial patterns in biodiversity based on forest structural attributes derived from lidar. However, with the advent of spaceborne lidar like the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), investigators are confronted with how to predict biodiversity from discrete GEDI footprints, sampled discontinuously across the Earth surface and often spatially offset from where diversity was measured in the field. In this study, we used National Ecological Observation Network data in a hierarchical modeling framework to assess how spatially-coincident BSRs (where field-observed taxonomic diversity measurements and structural data from airborne lidar coincide at a single plot) compare with BSRs based on statistical aggregates of proximate, but spatially-dispersed GEDI samples of structure. Despite substantial ecoregional variation, results confirm cross-biome consistency in the relationship between plant/tree alpha diversity and spatially-coincident lidar data, including structural data from outside the field plot where diversity was measured. Moreover, we found that generalized forest structural profiles derived from GEDI footprint aggregates were consistently related to tree alpha diversity, as well as cross-biome patterns in beta and gamma diversity. These findings suggest that characteristic forest structural profiles generated from aggregated GEDI footprints are effective for BSR diversity prediction without incorporation of more standard predictors of biodiversity like climate, topography, or optical reflectance. Cross-scale comparisons between airborne- and GEDI-derived structural profiles provide guidance for balancing scale-dependent trade-offs between spatial proximity and sample size for BSR-based prediction with GEDI gridded products. This study fills a critical gap in our understanding of how generalized forest structural attributes can be used to infer specific field-observed biodiversity patterns, including those not directly observable from remote sensing instruments. Moreover, it bolsters the empirical basis for global-scale biodiversity prediction with GEDI spaceborne lidar.

Annual Field-Scale Maps of Tall and Short Crops at the Global Scale Using GEDI and Sentinel-2

Crop type maps are critical for tracking agricultural land use and estimating crop production. Remote sensing has proven an efficient and reliable tool for creating these maps in regions with abundant ground labels for model training, yet these labels remain difficult to obtain for many regions and years. NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) spaceborne LiDAR instrument, originally designed for forest monitoring, has shown promise for distinguishing tall and short crops. In the current study, we leverage GEDI to develop wall-to-wall maps of short vs. tall crops on a global scale at 10 m resolution for 2019–2021. Specifically, we show that (i) GEDI returns can reliably be classified into tall and short crops after removing shots with extreme view angles or topographic slope, (ii) the frequency of tall crops over time can be used to identify months when tall crops are at their peak height, and (iii) GEDI shots in these months can then be used to train random forest models that use Sentinel-2 time series to accurately predict short vs. tall crops. Independent reference data from around the world are then used to evaluate these GEDI-S2 maps. We find that GEDI-S2 performed nearly as well as models trained on thousands of local reference training points, with accuracies of at least 87% and often above 90% throughout the Americas, Europe, and East Asia. A systematic underestimation of tall crop area was observed in regions where crops frequently exhibit low biomass, namely Africa and South Asia, and further work is needed in these systems. Although the GEDI-S2 approach only differentiates tall from short crops, in many landscapes this distinction is sufficient to map individual crop types (e.g., maize vs. soy, sugarcane vs. rice). The combination of GEDI and Sentinel-2 thus presents a very promising path towards global crop mapping with minimal reliance on ground data.

Combining Landsat time series and GEDI data for improved characterization of fuel types and canopy metrics in wildfire simulation

Wildfires in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) and other radioactively contaminated areas threaten human health and well-being with the potential to resuspend radionuclides. Wildfire behavior simulation is a necessary tool to examine the efficiency of fuel treatments in the CEZ, but it requires systematically updated maps of fuel types and canopy metrics. The objective of this study was to demonstrate an effective approach for mapping fuel types, canopy height (CH), and canopy cover (CC) in territories contaminated by radionuclides using Landsat time series (LTS) and Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) LiDAR observations. We combined LTS and GEDI data to map fuel types and canopy metrics used in wildfire simulations within the CEZ. Our classification model showed an adequate overall accuracy (75%) in mapping land covers and associated fuel types. The phenology metrics extracted from LTS reliably distinguished spectrally similar vegetation types (such as grasslands and croplands) which exhibit different flammability through the year. We also predicted a suite of relative heights metrics and CC at Landsat 30-m pixel level (R2 = 0.23–0.26) using the nearest neighbor technique. The imputed maps adequately captured the dynamics of CH and CC in the CEZ after recent large wildfires occurred in 2015, 2020, and 2022. Thus, we illustrate a LTS processing approach to produce wall-to-wall maps of canopy characteristics that are important for wildfire simulations. We conclude that continuous updating of land cover and canopy fuel data is crucial to ensure relevant fire management of radioactively contaminated landscapes and support local decision-making.

Carbon Storage Estimation of Quercus aquifolioides Based on GEDI Spaceborne LiDAR Data and Landsat 9 Images in Shangri-La

The assessment of forest carbon storage plays a crucial role in forest management and ecosystem exploration, enabling the evaluation of forest quality, resources, carbon cycle and management. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) satellite provides a means to accurately measure these various forest vertical structure parameters by penetrating the forest canopy. However, the distribution of the footprint along the orbit track is heterogeneous and discontinuous, preventing the acquisition of spatially distributed carbon storage formation at the county level. Consequently, this study integrated GEDI and Landsat 9 data to estimate Quercus aquifolioides carbon storage in Shangri-La. By applying the Kriging interpolation to previously pretreated footprints, surface information from the GEDI L2B footprints was obtained. At the same time, Landsat 9 vegetation indices and band reflectance were extracted to analyze the correlation with the carbon storage of Quercus aquifolioides samples. Then, three methods (support vector machine, bagging, and random forest) were used to create a carbon storage estimation model for Shangri-La. The research results showed that (1) among the models for the selection of GEDI footprint parameters based on semi-variance, the optimal model of the digital_elevation_model was the spherical model, while the best model of percentage tree cover from the MODIS data (modis_treecover) and the foliage height diversity index (fhd_normal) was the exponential model. (2) Analyzing the thirty-three extracted independent variable factors correlated with the carbon storage of Quercus aquifolioides showed that the top five variables with the highest correlation were digital_elevation_model, modis_treecover, fhd_normal, DEM, and band 1 (B1). (3) After variable selection, the R2 = 0.82 and RMSE = 11.92 t/hm2 values of the Quercus aquifolioides carbon storage estimation model established via random forest were obtained, and its evaluation precision was superior to that of the support vector machine method and bagging regression. The carbon storage of Quercus aquifolioides was primarily in the range of 8.22~94.63 t/hm2, and the mean value was 42.44 t/hm2, while the total carbon storage was about 5,374,137.62 t. The findings from this paper illustrated the feasibility of obtaining carbon storage data on a county scale by combining GEDI LiDAR data with Landsat 9 optical data. The results also suggested a new perspective for combining GEDI L2B data with other remote sensing images to estimate other forest structure parameters.

Estimating aboveground biomass density using hybrid statistical inference with GEDI lidar data and Paraguay’s national forest inventory

Forests are widely recognized as critical to combating climate change due to their ability to sequester and store carbon in the form of biomass. In recent years, the combined use of data from ground-based forest inventories and remotely sensed data from light detection and ranging (lidar) has proven useful for large-scale assessment of forest biomass, but airborne lidar is expensive and data acquisition is infeasible for many countries. By contrast, the spaceborne Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) lidar instrument has collected freely available data for most of the world’s temperate and tropical forests since 2019. GEDI’s biomass products rely on models calibrated with a global network of field plots paired with GEDI waveforms simulated from airborne lidar to predict biomass. While this calibration strategy minimizes spatial and temporal offsets between field measurements and corresponding lidar returns, calibration data are sparse in many regions. Paraguay’s forests are known to be poorly represented in GEDI’s current calibration dataset, and here we demonstrate that local models calibrated opportunistically with on-orbit GEDI data and field surveys from Paraguay’s national forest inventory can be used with GEDI’s statistical estimators of aboveground biomass density (AGBD). We specify a protocol for opportunistically matching GEDI observations with field plots to calibrate a field-to-GEDI biomass model for use in GEDI’s hybrid statistical framework. Country-specific calibration using on-orbit data resulted in relatively accurate and unbiased predictions of footprint-level biomass, and importantly, supported the assumption underlying model-based inference that the model must ‘apply’ to the area of interest. Using a locally calibrated biomass model, we estimate that the mean AGBD in Paraguay is 65.55 Mg ha−1, which coincides well with the design-based approach employed by the national forest inventory. The GEDI estimates for individual forest strata range from 52.34 Mg ha−1 to 103.88 Mg ha−1. On average, the standard errors are 47% lower for estimates based on GEDI than the forest inventory, representing a significant gain in precision. Our research demonstrates that GEDI can be used by national forest inventories in countries that seek reliable estimates of AGBD, and that local calibration using existing field plots may be more appropriate in some applications than using GEDI global models, especially in regions where those models are sparsely calibrated.
