Annotated checklist of family- and genus-group names associated with Scoliidae (Hymenoptera, Aculeata)

Thirty-two family-group names and 161 genus-group names are listed for Scoliidae, including two fossil subfamilies and eight fossil genera, together with identification of type species and critiques of publication history. Campsomerinae was first made available in 1912. Contrary to previous usage, Argaman must be recognised as author of Bellimeris, Catharinimeris (not Cathimeris), Colpacampsomeris, Fasciomeris (not Fascimeris), Garantimeris, Lindenimeris, Phaleromeris (not Phalerimeris), Tetrasciton and Tristomeris. Tristomeris takes precedence as correct spelling over Tristimeris. A summary classification to genus level is provided for Scoliidae. Trielidinastat. nov. is recognised as a subtribe of Campsomerini.

There are about 1275 genus-group names available in the 14 scarab subfamilies treated here by the end of August 2024. Of these, 917 refer to currently accepted genera, mainly in the Melolonthinae (611), Sericinae (168) and Sericoidinae (96). A further >390 genus-group names are given subgeneric rank, placed in synonymy or are unavailable. The chronology of descriptions of currently valid genera shows similar patterns in each of the three subfamilies with many described in the 1840s, a large group in the late 1800s and early 1900s and a steady increase in numbers following World War 2. We predict that discovery of new genera, as well as the potential for further splitting of mega-genera with elevation of subgenera to full generic level, will continue the upward trend, albeit somewhat balanced by combining the numerous monobasic genera. Type species are designated for Monochelus Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau & Audinet-Serville, 1828, Lepischiza Moser, 1914 and Trichoschiza Moser, 1917.

Nomenclatural history of Megalonyx Jefferson, 1799 (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Pilosa, Megalonychidae).

Both authorship and spelling of the extinct giant sloth genus Megalonyx and its type species, M.jeffersonii (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Pilosa, Megalonychidae), have been inconsistent. The genus-group name has been cited with two different authorships and three dates, and it has been spelled with two different suffixes. The species-group name has been cited with four different authors and dates, and it has been spelled with two different endings. Megalonyx Jefferson, 1799 is the first valid use of the genus-group name; the correct original spelling has the -onyx suffix. The type species of Megalonyx is Megatheriumjeffersonii Desmarest, 1822; the correct original spelling has an -ii ending. A vernacular word, megalonyx, refers to species classified in the genus Megalonyx Jefferson, 1799.

On the publication year of Sericini genera and species described by Brenske in Die Serica-Arten der Erde (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Sericinae).

The year of publication of Brenskes species and genera described in his opus Die Serica-Arten der Erde is updated following up an overlooked delay of some of the fascicules of the Berliner Entomologische Zeitschrift, namely the volumes 42, 43, and 46. This change affects 201 species group names and 20 genus group names, many of which have been revised in the past three decades, but no change of priority of other names occurred. The spelling of Mericserica oberthueri Brenske, 1899 is corrected.

A statistical overview of the research history of the superfamily Buprestoidea (Coleoptera)

A review of selected bibliographic, nomenclatural and taxonomic aspects of the study of Buprestoidea (families Schizopodidae and Buprestoidae) is presented from the Linne‘s time to the recent (1758-2023). All data are represented by diagrams. The number of documented taxonomic publications related to Buprestoidea is 11,629 with the annual largest of 192 publications appearing in 2007. The most prolific author in history is Obenberger with 455 publications. Available genus-group names include 256 invalid names and 777 valid names; the latter consist of 520 generic and 257 subgeneric names. Most genus-group names start with P, C or A and the four oldest valid ones are Buprestis, Trachys, Aphanisticus and Agrilus. Most genus-group names were proposed in 1864 (38 names) and in the period 1918-1937 (170 names). Names of 129 accepted genera or subgenera have invalid names (synonyms). A total of 137 authors contributed to generic-group names with the arithmetic mean 7.5 names per author. A total of 23,389 available species-group names exist in the superfamily Buprestoidea among which 6,551 (28%) are invalid and 16,838 (72%) are valid; the latter consist of 15,921 (94.6%) specific names and 917 (5.4%) subspecific names. The most frequent species-group name is strandi with 80 occurrences. Most species-group names begins with c, s or a. Most frequent species-group name 3-letter prefix is sub- (234 occurrences). The highest number of species-group names was proposed in 1924 (721 names) and in the period 1918-1937 (6,124 names). The global arithmetic mean of currently valid to invalid species-group names per year is 69.8%. A total of 660 authors contributed to the species-group names with the arithmetic mean is 35.4 names per author. Obenberger with 5,395 species-group names is by far the most prolific author. The subfamily Agrilinae has most genera (205, 39.4% of valid genera of Buprestoidea). Two tribes with the largest number of genera are also from subfamily Agrilinae: Coraebini (131 genera) and Agrilini (44 genera). Among 520 accepted genera of Buprestoidea, 71 (13.6%) have subgenera. The superfamily Buprestoidea contains 15,921 accepted species, among which seven belong to the family Schizopodidae and the rest to the family Buprestidae. Almost half (7,282, 45.8%) of all species of Buprestoidea is from the three agriline tribes: Agrilini, Tracheini and Coraebini. The most speciose genus in Buprestoidea, and in the whole of Animalia, is Agrilus (3,431 species), followed by Sphenoptera (1,002). Chrysochroa fulminans (Fabricius, 1787) is the jewel beetle species with the highest number of recognized subspecies (18).

Hathoronthophagus, new replacement name for Hathor Deschodt, 2023, preoccupied genus-group name of a putatively myrmecophilic dung beetle (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae: Onthophagini).

In November 2023, Deschodt & Sole (2023) proposed the new genus-group name Hathor Deschodt for a peculiar, putatively ant-associated onthophagine dung beetle from Gauteng province, South Africa. The genus is as yet known only from the female holotype of the species Hathor spinosa Deschodt, 2023. It was overlooked that the new generic name is preoccupied by Hathor Kirkaldy & Edwards, 1902, as regulated by the Principle of Homonymy (Articles 5260 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature [henceforth the Code, Anonymous 1999]). Hathor Kirkaldy & Edwards is a monotypic genus of red bug or cotton stainer (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pyrrhocoroidea: Pyrrhocoridae) from tropical Africa, itself a junior subjective synonym of Sericocoris Karsch, 1892. Sericocoris is currently a valid genus (Robertson 2004; Stehlk & Jindra 2011).

New taxa described by the staff of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in 2023

In this paper an overview and a list are given of the new taxa described by the scientific staff members and volunteer researchers of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in 2023. The list contains 115 species-group names, five genus-group names, and one family-group name proposed by the authors. With one figure.

New combinations and synonymies in the weevil genus Lyterius Schnherr (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), with a conspectus of historical works on Daldorffs Sumatran beetles.

In preparation for a future taxonomic revision, we explore provenance, collectors, original owners and current repositories of the type material for three available genus-group names, Lyterius Schnherr, 1844, Barisoma Motschulsky, 1863 and Plaxes Pascoe, 1885, which have been applied to a group of small, relatively flat weevils associated with Pandanaceae. Lectotypes are designated for Rhynchaenus musculus Fabricius, 1802 and Plaxes impar Pascoe, 1885. The lectotype of Rh. musculus is designated as neotype for Curculio abdominalis Weber, 1801, making the species names objective synonyms (reestablished synonymy), with C. abdominalis having date priority. The names Barisoma Motschulsky and Plaxes are placed in synonymy with Lyterius (new synonymies). Five valid species names are recognised in Lyterius, L. abdominalis (Weber), L. dispar (Faust, 1896) new combination, L. impar (Pascoe) new combination, L. instabilis Boheman, 1844 and L. pandanicola (Motschulsky, 1863) new combination. We also provide an overview of the early descriptive works on Sumatran beetles collected by Daldorff and their original owners.

On the taxonomy of the genus Isochlora Staudinger with descriptions of two new species from Mongolia and Qinghai, China (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Noctuinae).

Two new species of the genus Isochlora Staudinger, 1882 are described: I. hreblayi Volynkin, Tth, Titov & Saldaitis, sp. n. (western Mongolia) and I. kozlovi Volynkin, Titov, Matov & Saldaitis, sp. n. (Qinghai Province, China). The type species of the genus-group names Chamyla Staudinger, 1900 and Grumia Alphraky, 1892 (I. arctomys Alphraky, 1897 and I. flora (Alphraky, 1892), respectively) are examined, and their synonymy with Isochlora is revised. The synonymy of Chamyla idia Staudinger, 1900 with Isochlora arctomys Alphraky, 1897 is revised as junior synonymies. Lectotypes are designated for Isochlora arctomys Alphraky, 1897, Chamyla idia Staudinger, 1900 and Grumia flora Alphraky, 1892. Isochlora intricans (Alphraky, 1882) is reported from Kazakhstan for the first time. Adults as well as male and female genitalia are illustrated.

Solving nomenclatural problems of genus-group names of the cuckoo-wasps (Hymenoptera, Chrysididae): objectively invalid and unavailable names, new type-species designations, new names, a new genus and new synonymies.

Information is provided for 143 objectively invalid or unavailable genus-group names used in Chrysididae; 34 are objectively invalid, of which 18 are junior homonyms (five of these are also currently junior subjective synonyms), 18 are junior objective synonyms (two of these are also junior homonyms) of which seven are unjustified emendations, and two are unnecessary replacement names. The remaining 109 names are unavailable; 96 are incorrect subsequent spellings, most of them were originally lapsus calami or misprints, one is hereby deemed to be an incorrect original spelling, eight are nomina nuda, three were originally published as junior synonyms and never adopted before 1961 as valid names of any taxa, and one is a vernacular name previously considered as valid. Gender, type species, taxonomic history and status are given for each name except for incorrect subsequent spellings and unjustified emendations. Some cases of homonymies with taxa currently classified as non-animal are discussed. For two such junior homonyms, denoting genus-group taxa considered as valid in the present work, new replacement names are proposed: Linsenmaierella Rosa & Pavesi nom. nov. for Chrysidella Linsenmaier, nec Pascher; and Rhipidochrysis Rosa & Pavesi nom. nov. for Pleurochrysis Bohart, nec Pringsheim. New generic synonymies are established: consequent on new type-species designations, Leptoglossa Klug becomes a junior objective synonym of Parnopes Latreille syn. nov., and Pyrochloris Klug becomes a junior objective synonym of Euchroeus Latreille syn. nov.; Pseudodichrysis Trautmann is a junior objective synonym of Dichrysis Lichtenstein syn. nov. and the latter is in turn a junior subjective synonym of Chrysis Linnaeus. Platycelia Dahlbom is selected by the authors, acting as First Revisers, as the correct original spelling, and the simultaneously published Platycoelia is therefore deemed to be an incorrect subsequent spelling. The validation of Philoctetes Abeille de Perrin, not available when originally proposed, is discussed. Morphochrysis Rosa & Pavesi gen. nov. (type species: Chrysis pulchella Spinola) is here described; it includes members of the Chrysis pulchella species group previously included in Gonodontochrysis Semenov-Tian-Shanskij & Nikol'skaya, an unavailable name. The Chrysis zaravshanica species group is merged with the pulchella species group. A new specific synonymy within this group is proposed: Chrysis zaravshanica Tarbinsky syn. nov. of C. personata Semenov-Tian-Shanskij.

New species and genera described by Dr. Márton Hreblay (1963–2000) in his monograph on North-Thailand noctuid moths (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

In an unpublished manuscript on Asian noctuid moths, primarily on the fauna of NorthThailand, illustrated richly by 341 original figures, Dr. Márton Hreblay (*1963–†2000) proposed 84 new species-group and four genus-group names, designated lectotypes for 23 nominal taxa, and established 14 new synonyms. The original manuscript is published here with the annotations of the authors, finding that one of the newly proposed genus-group names and 14 of the new speciesgroup names are identical with taxa established after the year 2000, hence these names are not available for any action in zoological nomenclature, and they have only historical interest. The remaining 74 species-group and three genus-group names became available in this work under the authorship of Márton Hreblay, Gergely Katona and Balázs Tóth with the publication date of the present paper. Seven of the lectotype designations are invalid or can be questioned; these cases are also annotated. With 190 figures.

World Catalogue of the family Thaumaleidae (Diptera: Culicomorpha)

Family, genus and species group names in the family Thaumaleidae (Diptera: Culicomorpha) are catalogued, including information on name-bearing types, distribution by country and 428 references to all literature known to us pertaining to this family. The Thaumaleidae or madicolous midges are known from 202 species in the following seven genera: Afrothaumalea Stuckenberg, 1960 (3 species), Androprosopa Mik, 1898 (59 species), Austrothaumalea Tonnoir, 1927 (44 species), Neothaumalea Pivar, Moulton & Sinclair, 2018 (1 species), Niphta Theischinger, 1986 (14 species), Thaumalea Ruthe, 1831 (77 species) and Trichothaumalea Edwards, 1929 (4 species). In addition, one fossil genus and species are known (Mesothaumalea fossilis Kovalev). Published species distributions are provided, noting country and biogeographic region; specimen data representing new records for species are listed. The following new combinations, originally assigned to Thaumalea, are proposed: Androprosopa baminana (Yang, 2003) comb. nov., Androprosopa zhejiangana (Yang, 1998) comb. nov.

On the distribution of Athaumasta miltina (Püngeler) in Southeast Kazakhstan (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Bryophilinae)

Data on the distribution of Athaumasta miltina (Püngeler, 1902) in Northern Tien Shan in Kazakhstan is provided. Adults, male genitalia, habitats and a distribution map of the species in Kazakhstan are illustrated. The synonymy of the genus-group names is revised: Athaumasta Hampson, 1906 = Oederemia Hampson, 1908, stat. rev.

Resurrection of the genus Subulo for the gray brocket deer, with designation of a neotype

Abstract The gray brocket deer, Mazama gouazoubiraG. Fischer, 1814, occurs in South America and presents an extensive degree of morphological and genetic variability. Previous phylogenetic research showed that the genus Mazama is polyphyletic and imposed the designation of a different genus-group name for M. gouazoubira. We aimed to review and clarify the taxonomy of M. gouazoubira through the proposal of updating the nomenclature for this taxon and by the characterization of specimens collected close to the original type locality (topotypes). The topotypes were characterized by morphological (general characterization and morphometry), cytogenetic (conventional staining, Ag-NOR, G- and C-banding, and fluorescence in situ hybridization), and phylogenetic (mitogenomes) approaches. We revealed chromosome homologies between cattle and M. gouazoubira using an entire set of cattle whole chromosome painting probes and propose an updated G-band idiogram for the species. The morphometric analysis did not discriminate the individuals of M. gouazoubira, including the topotypes, from other small brocket deer species. However, the phylogenetic analysis, based on a Bayesian inference tree of the mitogenomes, confirmed the polyphyly of the genus Mazama and supported the need to change the gray brocket deer genus-group name. Based on our revision, we validated the genus SubuloSmith, 1827, and fixed a type species for the genus. In the absence of the holotype, we denominated a neotype described by the collection of a male topotype in Paraguay. The nomenclature rearrangement presented here is a starting point that will assist in the taxonomic resolution of Neotropical deer.

Etymology and grammatical gender of generic names in Auchenorrhyncha (Hemiptera)

The World Auchenorrhyncha Database comprises nomenclatural information for all known taxa in this suborder of Hemipteran insects (leafhoppers, planthoppers, treehoppers, cicadas, and spittle bugs). Of more than 110,000 included scientific names, 8,921 represent unique genus–group names (valid genera and subgenera as well as their synonyms). An attempt is being made to resolve the etymology of those names to clarify nomenclatural issues in this group of insects.

Phytosaurian Nomenclature: Parasuchia, Phytosauria or Belodontia?

The nomenclatural status of Phytosaurus Jæger is here analyzed in accordance with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. In the past, several authors have interpreted it as both a family-group and/or a genus-group name, but each of these approaches fails in several articles of the Code. Phytosaurus Jæger is here interpreted as originally established for a collective-group and cannot be used as a nominal genus in binomina, but takes precedence over any other younger homonym, and the first available one is Phytosaurus Wagler. Being an invalid junior homonym, the class-group name Phytosauria Baur and the family-group name Phytosauridae Lydekker, which are based on Phytosaurus Wagler, are ultimately rejected. Conversely, the class-group names Parasuchia Huxley and Belodontia Brauns, as well as the family-group name Belodontidae Cope, are older but have some taxonomic restrictions in relation to Belodon plieningeri Meyer. To avoid proposing new names for old ones, the solution to fix the higher-order nomenclature for phytosaurs is to designate a neotype for Belodon plieningeri Meyer. Supplement to the Catalogue of Genus-Group Names in Alleculinae (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)

Ten new genus-group names in Alleculinae described in the tribe Alleculini in 2021 and early in 2022 are added to the world checklist of genus-group names in this subfamily, including information about the author, year of publication, and type species (Barbucha Novák, 2021, Cistelochara Novák, 2021, Erzacula Novák, 2021, Mycetoculoides Novák, 2021, Palpistela Novák, 2021, Sulawesica Novák, 2021, Upineloides Novák, 2021, Vaclavka Novák, 2021, Novistela Novák, 2022 belonging to subtribe Alleculina Laporte, 1840 and Nocaroides Novák, 2021 belonging to the subtribe Gonoderina Seidlitz, 1896). Nine genus-group names are removed from Alleculinae “incertae sedis” based on a study of type material found in museum collections. Investigation of holotypes resulted in the following conclusions: Alogistopsis pilistriata Borchmann, 1943, Lagriallecula aeneipennis Pic, 1920, Pseudomorocaulus rufonotatus Pic, 1915, Stenogenomorpha impressa Pic, 1919 are members of the subtribe Alleculina Laporte, 1840; Bancocistela ivoirensis Pic, 1947 and Cistelodema cyanea (Pic, 1930) belong to the subtribe Gonoderina Seidlitz, 1896. Lectotypes are designated here for the type species Aptericula nyassensis Borchmann, 1937, Borchmannius pilosus (Borchmann, 1937) and Mimocistela zumpti Borchmann, 1938 for the purpose of clarifying the application of the name to those taxa, and these species are added to the subtribe Alleculina Laporte, 1840. An additional eight type species/genera are removed from Alleculinae “incertae sedis” based on the most important character (lobed penultimate tarsomeres) found in original descriptions which makes it possible to add them to the subtribe Alleculina (Apalmia cerambycina Fairmaire, 1896, Asticostena alternata Fairmaire, 1897, Bearnicistela luteicolor Pic in E. Olivier & Pic, 1909, Buxela sordescens Fairmaire, 1894, Dioxycula aranea Fairmaire, 1896, Idatius ophtalmicus Fairmaire, 1906, Isomiropsis wittei Borchmann, 1942 and Macrocistela striata Pic, 1941). The type species of the genus Ectenostoma (E. nigriventris Fåhraeus, 1870) is removed from Alleculinae “incertae sedis” based on information from the Borchmann's key making it possible to add the species to the subtribe Gonoderina Seidlitz, 1896.

A revision of Palaearctic Anthobium Leach, 1819 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Omaliinae: Anthophagini). V. Algidum, morosum and tectum groups, a new species of the fusculum group, and faunistic records.

containing European A. algidum (Erichson, 1840) comb.n. (from Deliphrum), the morosum group containing A. morosum sp. n. (Nepal), and the tectum group containing transpalaearctic A. tectum (Paykull, 1789) comb.n. (from Deliphrum Erichson, 1839), Siberian A. frigidum (J. Sahlberg, 1880) comb.n. (from Deliphrum), and seven new species from the eastern Palaearctic Region: A. cornatipenis sp. n. (China: Sichuan, Shalui Shan), A. himalayense sp. n. and A. vitreum sp. n. (Nepal), A. multipunctatum sp. n. (China: Sichuan, Chuangdongzi Mt.), A. smetanai sp. n. (China: Xizang, Quinlai Shan), A. tichomirovae sp. n. (Tajikistan: Gissar Mts.) and A. umbrinum sp. n. (China: Yunnan, Yulong Mts.). The species groups are defined, briefly discussed, and a key to the species of the tectum group is given. Anthobium infractum sp. n., a new species of the fusculum group from India (West Bengal), is described. The genus-group names Deliphrum and Arpediopsis Ganglbauer, 1895 (previously subgenus of Deliphrum) are treated as junior synonyms of Anthobium. All these taxa are re-described, illustrated, and their geographical distribution is mapped. Additionally, faunistic records for seven species of the consanguineum, fusculum, nigrum, and reflexum groups are given. Anthobium frigidum is recorded from Tyumen Area, Khanti-Mansi and Taimyr autonomous regions, Evenkia, Tuva and Buryatia, and A. tectum from Nenets, Khanty-Mansy, Yamalo-Nenets and Jewish autonomous regions, Tver, Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen, Novosibirsk, Chita and Amur area, Altai, Evenkia, Tuva, and Khabarovsk Territory for the first time.
