Філологічний підхід як методологічна стратегія: розвідки І. Денисюка про Лесю Українку

The purpose of the article is to trace the use of the philological approach to literary research on the materials of I. Denysiuk's scientific papers about Lesya Ukrainka. The methodological and generalizing works by R. Gromyak, M. Naienko, M. Hnatiuk, and P. Ivanyshyn, as well as topical investigations that illustrate its functioning (articles by T. Pastukh and S. Pylypchuk), outlined the theoretical framework of this study. Results. Proponents of the philological approach defined its main goal as an in-depth study of the text, which later gave reasons for researchers of this phenomenon to focus attention on the concept of form, thus bringing it closer to the formalism blocked in the Soviet period. Scientific research in this direction was conducted mainly in emigration and Western Ukraine. In post-Soviet Ukraine, in the conditions of the socialist realist dictates dominating in the artistic domain and vulgar sociological dictates in science, supporters of the structural-formalist approach sought a compromise, for example, in the use of holistic-systemic analysis. The range of I. Denysiuk's scientific interests involve numerous studies on the history and theory of literature, folkloristics and methodology, local history, and literary criticism. His research searches are characterized by scrupulousness, profound analysis, and well-balanced generalizations, which are determined primarily by a philological approach. Scientific works about Lesya Ukrainka are represented by the study of the sources and poetics of the drama "Forest Song" (co-authored with L. Mishchenko), the study of creative biography in the context of the "noble nest of Kosachy" (together with T. Skrypka), and other thematic publications. I. Denysiuk utilized the analysis of Lesya Ukrainka's texts and her critical thoughts in the development of his own genre-logical concepts. Conclusions. The notion of the philological approach is very broad and at the same time too generalizing to become a separate method of literary studies. It rather serves as the core of the methodology or defines the strategy of scientific research. The philological approach in the conditions of totalitarian systems made it possible to carry out professional research in taboo areas, such as formalism and structuralism. I. Denysiuk's scientific research is mostly determined by the text-centric principles of the philological approach in investigations of poetics, in general, and genre analysis, in particular.

Didáctica del género discursivo oral para la educación inicial

The study of the oral discursive genre has traditionally occupied a relevant place in teaching orality as a mechanistic expressive ability that does not do justice to the complexity of the real practices of oral interaction in the fields of use. Therefore, this text aims to seek new meanings of the theoretical and pedagogical understandings of oral interaction within the framework of Emergency Remote Teaching (ERE) and to propose didactics of the oral discursive genre for Initial Education from the reflexivity of teachers organized in mixed research communities. The methodological perspective adheres to the principles of action research, in which the production of collective knowledge is promoted. The findings suggest the symbiosis of time-space in the online classroom as a constituent scenario of the participants that configures a framework of dialogic relationships from three chronotopes: intention, meaning, and appropriation, which enable significant forms of communication where the oraldiscursive genre is considered as a way of organizing different pedagogical proposals by venturing into six itineraries of reflection in order to make it visible in the school curriculum.

The present paper analyses the text of The Litany of St. Andrew Bobola within the framework of genre theory and pragmatics. The following four profiles of Andrew Bobola are identified: a pious priest, a pastor (the apostle of Polesie), a martyr, and the patron of Poland. They are illustrated with the facts of the Saint’s life and the history of worship.

Using genre analysis for conceptualising virtual team collaborations with complex role and work context connections: what implementation problems can occur?

ABSTRACT Modern technology enables virtual team collaboration, offering new possibilities, particularly for geographically distributed teams. Traditionally, organisations favoured presence-based collaboration, but the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a widespread reconsideration, highlighting the feasibility and advantages of virtual teamwork. In the post-pandemic era, the focus has shifted from whether to engage in virtual team collaboration to how to do so effectively and efficiently. Particularly, the COVID-19 pandemic revealed that virtual team collaborations with complex role and work context connections can still encounter fundamental problems. Thus, it is crucial to promote effective and efficient collaboration within virtual teams. This study employs a genre analysis proactively to conceptualise complex virtual team collaboration within a fully virtualised management education seminar addressing real-world IT consulting problems. Through a qualitative multiple-case study approach, the effectiveness and efficiency of this approach are evaluated. This study demonstrates the feasibility through handling, individual satisfaction, and group performance. It also sheds light on the potential of proactive use of genre analysis. The findings underscore the importance of using genre analysis in a proactive way and provide theoretical insights.

A genealogy of poetry

Abstract Poetry does not have a history; it has many histories. By tracing the history of poetry in the West, in conjunction with genre studies and research on concept formation, it is evident that the genre “poetry” is contingent on the various rhetorical situations of its production. Such an approach reveals that the concept “poetry,” like all concepts, is always in flux. Yet, despite the fact that “poetry” means different things to different people in different times and places, studies of oral poetry have yielded insights into traits that might be considered universal to poetry, such as its performativity and categorization as ritual language. Other common aspects include the use of parallelism, analogy and metaphor, musicality, and how poems function as metapragmatic symbols that reflect the values of their cultural production. This functionalist approach to poetry reveals that the evolution of poetry is at once historically contingent and culturally universal, and recognizes that poetry’s multiplicity and continual becoming operate with the primary goals of generating and sharing culturally relative meaning.

A Contrastive Critical Genre Analysis of Chinese and American Company Profiles

As an expansion of genre analysis, critical genre analysis focuses not only on text-internal properties, but also on text-external factors. It is a multi-perspective and multidimensional genre analyzing approach, aiming at explaining professional practices under academic and professional context. Based on critical genre analysis, referring to the four-layered analyzing model put forward by Bahtia (2008), this paper makes a critical genre analysis on company profiles of 20 famous companies from China and America, in an attempt to study the interactive relationship between professional practice, professional culture and genre resources.

Intervention of age-related memory impairment by integrative musical stimuli

Abstract. Age-related memory impairment often causes significant distress for the elderly, imposing substantial burdens on families and society. It is widely known that auditory stimulation can trigger certain emotions and brain activities, but studies about factors that determine its effectiveness are lacking. This study aims to investigate the potential of music as an intervention for age-related memory impairment and the relative importance of music genre and preference level as factors that impact the effectiveness of music treatment. The research involves 22 participants and evaluates verbal episodic and working memory performance using the ten-word test (TWT) and digit span (DS) test, respectively. Additionally, electroencephalogram (EEG) data is analyzed to examine the impact of music on cortical electrical activity. This study involves the creation of a random forest machine learning model to predict long-term memory outcomes based on short-term data. Based on results comparing preference to music genre, we found that preference is a more important determining factor for the effectiveness of music treatment, and preference level one (most favourite music) treatment yielded the highest average improvements in both the TWT and the DS. Based on genre analysis, classical music stimuli were effective for improving long-term TWT and DS scores, and folk music stimuli effectively improved long-term TWT scores. Following folk music treatment, participants aged 65 and above yielded TWT score enhancements ranging from 25% to 66.7% and DS score enhancements ranging from 20% to 50%. This study also discovered the effectiveness of utilizing the random forest machine learning model to predict long-term TWT and DS outcomes based on short-term results, potentially enhancing the efficiency of future treatment.

Using Genre Analysis to Detect AI-Generated Academic Texts

This study investigates the distinguishing characteristics between human-written and AI-generated abstracts through genre analysis techniques. The research examined mini-memoir abstracts authored by MA2 students at Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Kairouan, Tunisia and compared them to AI-generated abstracts created specifically for this study using ChatGPT. The analysis focused on text function recurrence, specifically the frequency and quality of elements such as purpose statements, methodology, results, and contextualization. Findings revealed that human-written abstracts exhibit a more comprehensive and detailed presentation, emphasizing contextualization and thorough results, while AI-generated abstracts tend to prioritize clear and explicit purpose statements with less depth in results and contextual information. The study highlights the need for targeted teacher training and rigorous assessment criteria to uphold academic integrity and address the challenges posed by AI in scholarly writing.

The story behind the cinematic true crime documentary: working towards a typology

ABSTRACT Historically, documentaries have employed cinematic techniques, but since the 1990s there has been a pronounced application of such devices for theatrical appeal. This trend, amplified by digital streaming platforms, raises concerns about representations of reality. To understand the scope of such concerns, a key question arises: what constitutes some of these ‘cinematic’ techniques used within documentaries? Despite claims that appealing documentaries often employ Hollywood storytelling strategies, there is limited understanding of how the genre adopts specific devices for cinematic entertainment. This article examines true crime documentary The Imposter, analysing its use of cinematic screenwriting and story devices, specifically dramatic structure. An analytical model is synthesised through genre theory (thriller) with Lucy V. Hay's understanding of the Three-Act-Structure, underpinned by relevant literature. This examination reveals how the documentary employs ‘cinematic’ aesthetics and thriller conventions to engage audiences. Drawing on Murray Smith’s ‘Structure of Sympathy’, the article explores the filmmaker's application of these storytelling techniques, shedding light on their potential capacity to shape audience appraisal of real-world events and subjects in true crime documentaries. The analysis aims to identify and unpack these specific storytelling devices, contributing to a deeper understanding of the impact of cinematic techniques in nonfiction filmmaking for representing reality.

Live-Capture Filmed Theatre Productions: A New Hybrid Art Form Between Film and Theatre

This paper explores the unique positioning of live-capture filmed theatre, specifically referring to National Theatre Live examples, through the lenses of film theory and genre studies. Live-capture filmed theatre has gained substantial traction, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which accelerated the transition of theatre into online platforms. This study examines how this hybrid form is conceptualized within contemporary film theory and genre frameworks. Drawing on D.N. Rodowick’s insights into the fluid and evolving nature of cinema and Siegfried Kracauer’s critique of early filmed theatre’s “canning,” the paper evaluates how live-capture filmed theatre both sticks to and differs from traditional cinematic norms. Additionally, Rick Altman’s semantic/syntactic/pragmatic genre theory provides a framework for assessing the hybrid characteristics of live-capture filmed theatre. The analysis reveals that while live-capture theatre fits neither conventional film genres nor fully reflects theatrical experiences, it operates within a distinct hybrid space that blends elements of both media. Ultimately, live-capture filmed theatre is positioned as a new hybrid art form that challenges conventional definitions of film and theatre. It contributes to the evolving discourse on audiovisual media by offering new industrial opportunities and enhancing global accessibility to theatrical performances. This study highlights the need for continuous exploration of hybrid art forms and their impact on the future of film and theatre studies.

Exploring the Genre of International Online Communication to Map the Stages and Phases in the Participants’ Analytical Exposition Texts

In the current digital age, an online messaging platform called the International Virtual Exchange (IVE) Program is widely utilized in the English language learning process. The participants of the IVE Program are learners from non-native English-speaking countries with different cultural contexts, so they may have different realizations of genre structures. Most studies employing genre analysis only covered the genre stages without analyzing their phases. Therefore, this study aims to explore the stages and phases of the participants’ Analytical Exposition texts in the IVE 2021 Program, as one of the micro-genre texts on the international online communication with the topic Lessons from the Pandemic. The results showed that the participants of the IVE 2021 Program, who come from six different countries, had different stages and phases of the genre because the schematic structure could change based on the type and number of arguments/issues described in the text. This research can be used as a reference for participants of international online communication, especially in the IVE Program, so that they can implement complete and holistic stages and phases of the genre in their communication texts to minimize misunderstandings from other participants.

Analysis of the Arab singer Shadia’s lyrics

AbstractIn this work, we analyze the lyrics of one of the most famous and influential Arab artists in the twentieth century, namely "Image missing" (Shadia). Lyrics analysis provides a deep insight into the artist’s career evolution and her interactions with the surrounding environment including the social, political, and economic conditions. In order to perform such analysis, we had to collect and compile the lyrics of Shadia accompanied with the necessary meta-data into an organized and structured form. The data are preprocessed by removing stop words and doing some normalization operations over the songs prose. We did not perform any lemmatization or stemming as the original form of the tokens conveys much more information than the source words. We performed a lexical analysis in order to study both the lexical diversity and density over the course of Shadia’s career life. We have as well studied the most significant words, idioms, and terms played in the songs using tools such as word clouds and more quantitative measures such as term frequency–inverse document frequency. We have divided the career life of Shadia into sub-decades of length 5 years, and all analyses are done both in a yearly fashion and more coarsely over such sub-decades. Our quantitative analyses show strong correlations between the artistic lyrical work of Shadia and the state of affairs in Egypt and the Arab World during her time. In particular, Shadia’s lyrics reflect the radical changes in all aspects of the social, political, and economic conditions. This is especially relevant knowing that Shadia is very much truly considered the daughter of the generation of the 1952 revolution in Egypt. The significance of Shadia and her lyrics stem essentially from being contemporaneous to radical changes in Egypt across all sectors including political (support of liberation movements across the world and the conflict with Israel) and socioeconomic (especially changing the social class structure in Egypt). We also investigated the potential effectiveness of PoS (Part-of-Speech) tagging in genre analysis and classification.

Consciousness and commodity: towards a critical theory of genre in American popular music

ABSTRACT This paper uses a critical theory approach to analyse the process of genre in American popular music. Synthesizing views from Herbert Marcuse and Theodor Adorno with more optimistic perspectives from Angela Davis and Tia DeNora, the paper proposes a cyclical theory of genre transformation from communal resistance to commodified product. Three case studies are used to show this process. In the 1920s, Appalachian music transformed from indigenous, multi-racial folk to commercialized ‘hillbilly music'. During the 1970s disco originated in queer communities to provide liberation on the dancefloor, became the dominant music of the decade, resulting in its homophobic extinction while inspiring new dance genres like house. Finally, the 1980s saw the rise of rap as a mode of defiance to racial and economic violence, but subsequent generations of artists worked to self-commodify to appeal to suburban white audiences, becoming the world's most popular genre. The paper examines how each genre originated as a form of resistance, gained widespread popularity, and ultimately became commodified. It concludes by exploring how AI-driven algorithms have disrupted traditional consumption patterns based on genre. In its place, machine learning and artificial intelligence is fabricating an ‘algorithmic self’ that individuates while disconnecting from specific communal expressions.

Satire Between the Lines: Negotiating Genre Hybridity in the Satirical Newsroom of De Ideale Wereld

ABSTRACT The proliferation of political entertainment has internationally produced a wide variety of news satire formats which blend journalistic conventions with comedic storytelling. This paper investigates the production of the Belgian news satire show De Ideale Wereld through a genre theory lens, viewing genre as enacted practice. It reports on 23 interviews with the show's hosts and editorial staff and a three-week observation period in its “satirical newsroom.” The findings reveal how the creators of De Ideale Wereld engage in an on­going negotiation of comedic and journalistic roles inspired by irreconcilable genre identities, embodying conflicting intentions located on different ends of the spectrum between comedic absurdity and journalistic inquiry. Furthermore, by adhering to journalistic practices such as fact-checking and news values, the show's creators navigate perceived limitations to the subjectivity inherent to their roles as comedic professionals. This article contributes to the limited understanding of the production of news satire and the implications of hybridity on the understanding of comedic and journalistic practice.

Genre Analysis of Law Research Article Abstracts and Application in Legal Writing Teaching

Investigating the rhetorical structure of law research article (LRA) abstracts is essential for researchers and instructors in legal writing. Despite their significance in academic discourse, the specific rhetorical strategies used in LRA abstracts remain underexplored. This study examines the rhetorical moves in English LRA abstracts using Hyland’s framework. Fifty LRA abstracts, randomly selected from the Journal of East Asia and International Law and Law in Context, both of which are indexed in Scopus and ISI Web of Science, were analyzed as the corpus. The research employed a qualitative content analysis approach to identify and categorize the rhetorical moves. The study reveals that the purpose and introduction moves are the most prevalent, underscoring the importance of clearly stating objectives and establishing context. The product and conclusion move, which summarize key findings and extend research implications, follow in prevalence. In contrast, the method move appears less frequently, reflecting the genre's focus on legislative analysis rather than detailed methodologies. These findings are valuable for law researchers aiming to publish in international law journals and contribute to a broader understanding of genre analysis in legal writing. The study offers practical implications for scholars and educators, enhancing the effectiveness of legal academic communication.

French Medical Poster as a Genre of Medical Discourse

A medical poster is a polycode text of medical discourse, the main purpose of which is to inform the participant in the medical discourse, first of all, the patient, about the existence, characteristic features, peculiarities of the course, solution and consequences of any medical problem. The object of the study is the polycode text of a French medical poster; the subject of the study is genre features of a medical poster in French, considered at the level of thematic diversity, repeating verbal and visual tools, and features of the use of paralinguistic means. The article is a fragment of a study of several genres of medical discourse, which are represented by polycode texts (medical poster, meme, demotivator, advertising), made on the material of Russian, French and Arabic languages. The analysis of the polycode text of a medical poster in French was carried out on 100 texts in French obtained by continuous sampling from the Internet. The novelty of the study is the appeal to the medical poster from the point of view of genre characteristics in the context of medical discourse. The analysis of French medical posters revealed the frequency of posters about cancer symptoms, diagnosis, types of treatment, and prevention; prevention and treatment of Covid-19. A feature of the verbal level is the choice of communicative strategy and its grammatical design in relation to child and adult recipients; inclusion of current vocabulary in the text, including neologisms, as well as preference for repeating a certain structure when organizing the verbal component of a polycode text. At the visual level, French medical posters are characterized by the frequent use of pictures and diagrams and work with color. The basis for constructing a polycode text of a medical poster is the complementary connection between the visual and verbal components.

“What Treasure is Hid in Milk”?: Transforming Bodily Fluids in the English Early Modern Receipt Book

Abstract: Early modern scholars have traced the use of milk as a culinary metaphor in Renaissance drama. Milk was understood to be an already transformed and actively transforming fluid. Sixteenth-century receipt books from the Folger Shakespeare Library help contextualize these symbolic resonances in milk’s material substance as it manifests in the receipt book’s utilitarian prescriptions. This paper uses genre studies to argue that milk offers an additional node on the receipt book’s matrices of transformation and to highlight the early modern receipt book as a valuable site of inquiry for ecofeminist and new materialist scholarship.

COMMUNICATION AND FORMALIZATION OF FAMILY FARMING ENTERPRISES, TRADITIONAL PEOPLES AND COMMUNITIES

The creation and implementation of the Communication and Formalization Tools Manual aimed at family farming enterprises, traditional peoples and communities of the Puranga Conquista Sustainable Development Reserve, in Manaus-AM, aims to train community members in the production and circulation of formal documents so that they can communicate formally with institutions of interest to them, using letters, emails, minutes, requests, complaints, requests and internal regulations. To this end, a bibliographical research was carried out, based on books, articles, reports and manuals available on academic platforms and digital repositories. The research steps included the selection and analysis of textual genres, development of production instructions for each tool and organization of these instructions in a practical manual. Among the results are the improvement in documentary production by the communities, the strengthening of their social organizations and the ability to articulate their demands more effectively with government agencies and partners. In addition, the formalization of internal rules through internal regulations contributes to a more efficient and harmonious management of community relations with natural resources. Furthermore, the research brings the community closer to public institutions, which need to communicate, as well as promoting technological inclusion and literacy in social writing practices, training community members in the use of formal communication tools. In short, this research meets the immediate needs of the communities of the Puranga Conquista RDS, strengthening autonomy, management capacity and participation in decision-making processes.

Slanting the Holocaust in the Fairy Tale Form: Jean-Claude Grumberg’s The Most Precious of Cargoes

This article analyzes Jean-Claude Grumberg’s 2019 Holocaust fairy tale, The Most Precious of Cargoes, translated from French. This fairy tale adds to Grumberg’s oeuvre of Holocaust fiction, including plays and children’s stories. His fairy tale may be his most personal attempt to process his own Holocaust experience, as he includes an appendix with facts about his father and grandfather who died in Auschwitz. Specifically, the fairy tale is approached through an analysis of the fairy tale genre’s pairing with the subject of the Holocaust. The article also examines possible readings of such a pairing through a close reading of the tale that analyzes the role of good vs. evil. Published interviews with Grumberg, theory on the fairy tale, and other Holocaust fairy tales establish a view that The Most Precious of Cargoes is unique in Holocaust fiction.
