Back to the features: assessing the discriminating power of future CMB missions on inflationary models

Future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments will deliver extremely accurate measurements of the E-modes pattern of the CMB polarization field. Given the sharpness of the E-modes transfer functions, such surveys make for a powerful detector of high-frequency signals from primordial features that may be lurking in current data sets. With a handful of toy models that increase the fit to the latest Planck data, but are of marginal statistical significance, we use a state-of-the-art forecast pipeline to illustrate the promising prospects to test primordial features in the next decade. Not only will future experiments allow us to detect such features in data, but they will also be able to discriminate between models and narrow down the physical mechanism originating them with high statistical significance. On the other hand, if the anomalies in the currently measured CMB spectra are just statistical fluctuations, all the current feature best fit candidates will be ruled out. Either way, our results show that primordial features are a clear target of forthcoming CMB surveys beyond the detection of tensor modes.

Primordial information content of Rayleigh anisotropies

Anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are primarily generated by Thomson scattering of photons by free electrons. Around recombination, the Thomson scattering probability quickly diminishes as the free electrons combine with protons to form neutral hydrogen off which CMB photons can scatter through Rayleigh scattering. Unlike Thomson scattering, Rayleigh scattering is frequency dependent resulting in the generation of anisotropies with a different spectral dependence. Unfortunately the Rayleigh scattering efficiency rapidly decreases with the expansion of the neutral universe, with the result that only a small percentage of photons are scattered by neutral hydrogen. Although the effect is very small, future CMB missions with higher sensitivity and improved frequency coverage are poised to measure Rayleigh scattering signal. The uncorrelated component of the Rayleigh anisotropies contains unique information on the primordial perturbations that could potentially be leveraged to expand our knowledge of the early universe. In this paper we explore whether measurements of Rayleigh scattering anisotropies can be used to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity (NG) and examine the hints of anomalies found by WMAP and \textit{Planck} satellites. We show that the additional Rayleigh information has the potential to improve primordial NG constraints by $30\%$, or more. Primordial bispectra that are not of the local type benefit the most from these additional scatterings, which we attribute to the different scale dependence of the Rayleigh anisotropies. Unfortunately this different scaling means that Rayleigh measurements can not be used to constrain anomalies or features on large scales. On the other hand, anomalies that may persist to smaller scales, such as the potential power asymmetry seen in WMAP and \textit{Planck}, could be improved by the addition of Rayleigh measurements.

M-theory, black holes and cosmology.

This paper is dedicated to Michael J. Duff on the occasion of his 70th birthday. I discuss some issues of M-theory/string theory/supergravity closely related to Mike's interests. I describe a relation between STU black hole entropy, the Cayley hyperdeterminant, the Bhargava cube and a three-qubit Alice-Bob-Charlie triality symmetry. I shortly describe my recent work with Gunaydin, Linde and Yamada on M-theory cosmology (Gunaydin et al. 2020 M-theory cosmology, octonions, error-correcting codes (http://arxiv.org/abs/2008.01494)), inspired by the work of Duff with Ferrara and Borsten, Levay, Marrani et al. Here, we have seven-qubits, a party including Alice, Bob, Charlie, Daisy, Emma, Fred and George. Octonions and Hamming error-correcting codes are at the base of these models. They lead to seven benchmark targets of future cosmic microwave background missions looking for primordial gravitational waves from inflation. I also show puzzling relations between the fermion mass eigenvalues in these cosmological models, the exceptional Jordan eigenvalue problem and black hole entropy. The symmetry of our cosmological models is illustrated by beautiful pictures of a Coxeter projection of the root system of E7.

Dust polarization modelling at large scale over the northern Galactic cap using EBHIS and Planck data

The primary source of systematic uncertainty in the quest for the B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) introduced by primordial gravitational waves is polarized thermal emission from Galactic dust. Therefore, accurate characterization and separation of the polarized thermal dust emission is an essential step in distinguishing such a faint CMB B-mode signal. We provide a modelling framework to simulate polarized thermal dust emission based on the model described in Ghosh et al. (2017, A&A, 601, A71), making use of both the Planck dust and Effelsberg-Bonn HI surveys over the northern Galactic cap. Our seven-parameter dust model, incorporating both HI gas in three different column density templates as a proxy for spatially variable dust intensity and a phenomenological model of Galactic magnetic field, is able to reproduce both one- and two-point statistics of the observed dust polarization maps seen by Planck at 353 GHz over a selected low-column density region in the northern Galactic cap. This work has important applications in assessing the accuracy of component separation methods and in quantifying the confidence level of separating polarized Galactic emission and the CMB B-mode signal, as is needed for ongoing and future CMB missions.

CMB Shadows: The Effect of Interstellar Extinction on Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization and Temperature Anisotropy

Abstract We evaluate the degradation of the accuracy of the component separation between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and foreground components caused by neglect of absorption of the CMB’s monopole component by the galactic interstellar matter. The amplitude of the temperature anisotropy caused by the CMB shadow, due to dust components, is about 1 μK. This value is comparable to the required noise level necessary to probe non-Gaussianity studies with upcoming CMB experiments. In addition, the amplitude of the polarization caused by the CMB shadow due to dust is comparable to or larger than the rms value of the CMB B-mode polarization, imprinted by primordial gravitational waves. We show that applying a single-power-law model as the dust spectrum to observed multifrequency data introduces systematic errors, which are comparable to or larger than the required noise level for forthcoming CMB B-mode polarization experiments. Deducing the intrinsic spectrum of dust emission from the submillimeter wave band data reduces the systematic error to below the required noise level. However, this method requires dust temperature measurements with an accuracy of better than a few percent. We conclude that the CMB shadow due to dust must be considered in future CMB missions for achieving their targeted sensitivity. Our results will be important to detect the primordial CMB B-mode polarization, with the amplitude of the tensor-to-scalar ratio of r = 10−3.

Running of featureful primordial power spectra

Current measurements of the temperature and polarization anisotropy power spectra of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) seem to indicate that the naive expectation for the slow-roll hierarchy within the most simple inflationary paradigm may not be respected in nature. We show that a primordial power spectra with localized features could in principle give rise to the observed slow-roll anarchy when fitted to a featureless power spectrum. Future CMB missions have the key to disentangle among the two possible paradigms and firmly establish the slow-roll mechanism as the responsible one for the inflationary period in the early universe. From a model comparison perspective, and assuming that nature has chosen a featureless primordial power spectrum, we find that, while with mock Planck data there is only weak evidence against a model with localized features, upcoming CMB measurements may provide strong evidence against such a non-standard primordial power spectrum.

Development of the Next Generation of Multi-chroic Antenna-Coupled Transition Edge Sensor Detectors for CMB Polarimetry

We present the development of the next generation of multi-chroic sinuous antenna-coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers optimized for precision measurements of polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and cosmic foreground. These devices employ a polarization sensitive broadband self-complementary sinuous antenna to feed on-chip band defining filters before delivering the power to load resistors coupled to a TES on a released bolometer island. This technology was originally developed by UC Berkeley and will be deployed by POLARBEAR-2 and SPT-3G in the next year and half. In addition, it is a candidate detector for the LiteBIRD mission which will make all sky CMB and cosmic foreground polarization observations from a satellite platform in the early 2020’s. This works focuses on expanding both the bandwidth and band count per pixel of this technology in order to meet the needs of future CMB missions. This work demonstrates that these devices are well suited for observations between 20 and 380 GHz. This proceeding describes the design, fabrication, and the characterization of three new pixel types: a low-frequency triplexing pixel (LFTP) with bands centered on 40, 60, and 90 GHz, a high-frequency triplexing pixel (HFTP) with bands centered on 220, 280, and 350 GHz, and a mid-frequency tetraplexing pixel with bands (MFTP) centered on 90, 150, 220, and 280 GHz. The average fractional bandwidth of these pixels designs was 36.7, 34.5, and 31.4 % respectively. In addition we found that the polarization modulation efficiency of each band was between 1 and 3 % which is consistent with the polarization efficiency of the wire grid used to take the measurement. Finally, we find that the beams have $${\sim }$$ 1 % ellipticity for each pixel type. The thermal properties of the bolometers where tuned for characterization in our lab so we do not report on G and noise values as they would be unsuitable for modern CMB experiments.

The optimisation, design and verification of feed horn structures for future Cosmic Microwave Background missions

In order to investigate the origins of the Universe, it is necessary to carry out full sky surveys of the temperature and polarisation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation, the remnant of the Big Bang. Missions such as COBE and Planck have previously mapped the CMB temperature, however in order to further constrain evolutionary and inflationary models, it is necessary to measure the polarisation of the CMB with greater accuracy and sensitivity than before.Missions undertaking such observations require large arrays of feed horn antennas to feed the detector arrays. Corrugated horns provide the best performance, however owing to the large number required (circa 5000 in the case of the proposed COrE+ mission), such horns are prohibitive in terms of thermal, mechanical and cost limitations.In this paper we consider the optimisation of an alternative smooth-walled piecewise conical profiled horn, using the mode-matching technique alongside a genetic algorithm. The technique is optimised to return a suitable design using efficient modelling software and standard desktop computing power. A design is presented showing a directional beam pattern and low levels of return loss, cross-polar power and sidelobes, as required by future CMB missions. This design is manufactured and the measured results compared with simulation, showing excellent agreement and meeting the required performance criteria.The optimisation process described here is robust and can be applied to many other applications where specific performance characteristics are required, with the user simply defining the beam requirements.

How well can future CMB missions constrain cosmic inflation?

We study how the next generation of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurement missions (such as EPIC, LiteBIRD, PRISM and COrE) will be able to constrain the inflationary landscape in the hardest to disambiguate situation in which inflation is simply described by single-field slow-roll scenarios. Considering the proposed PRISM and LiteBIRD satellite designs, we simulate mock data corresponding to five different fiducial models having values of the tensor-to-scalar ratio ranging from 10-1 down to 10-7. We then compute the Bayesian evidences and complexities of all Encyclopædia Inflationaris models in order to assess the constraining power of PRISM alone and LiteBIRD complemented with the Planck 2013 data. Within slow-roll inflation, both designs have comparable constraining power and can rule out about three quarters of the inflationary scenarios, compared to one third for Planck 2013 data alone. However, we also show that PRISM can constrain the scalar running and has the capability to detect a violation of slow roll at second order. Finally, our results suggest that describing an inflationary model by its potential shape only, without specifying a reheating temperature, will no longer be possible given the accuracy level reached by the future CMB missions.

We aim to present a tutorial on the detection, parameter estimation and statistical analysis of compact sources (far galaxies, galaxy clusters and Galactic dense emission regions) in cosmic microwave background observations. The topic is of great relevance for current and future cosmic microwave background missions because the presence of compact sources in the data introduces very significant biases in the determination of the cosmological parameters that determine the energy contain, origin and evolution of the universe and because compact sources themselves provide us with important information about the large scale structure of the universe.

Constraining running non-gaussianity

The primordial non-Gaussian parameter fNL has been shown to be scale-dependent in several models of inflation with a variable speed of sound, such as Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) models. We perform a Fisher matrix analysis of the bispectra of the temperature and polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation and derive the expected constraints on the parameter nNG that quantifies the running of fNL(k) for current and future CMB missions. We find that CMB information alone, in the event of a significant detection of the non-Gaussian component, corresponding to fNL = 50 for the local model and fNL = 100 for the equilateral model of non-Gaussianity, is able to determine nNG with a 1-σ uncertainty of nNG ≃ 0.1 and ΔnNG ≃ 0.3, respectively, for the Planck mission and a factor of two better for CMBPol. In addition, we show how future large-scale structure observations should achieve results comparable to or even better than those from the CMB, while showing some complementarity due to the different distribution of the non-Gaussian signal over the relevant range of scales. Finally, we compare our findings to the predictions on the amplitude and running of non-Gaussianity of DBI inflation, showing how the constraints on a scale-dependent fNL(k) translate into constraints on the parameter space of the theory.

Gravitational waves, inflation and the cosmic microwave background: towards testing the slow-roll paradigm

One of the fundamental and yet untested predictions of inflationary models is the generation of a very weak cosmic background of gravitational radiation. We investigate the sensitivity required for a space-based gravitational wave laser interferometer with peak sensitivity at ∼1 Hz to observe such signal as a function of the model parameters and compare it with indirect limits that can be set with data from present and future cosmic microwave background missions. We concentrate on signals predicted by slow-roll single-field inflationary models and instrumental configurations such as those proposed for the LISA follow-on mission: big bang observer.

Cosmic microwave background polarization data and galactic foregrounds: estimation of cosmological parameters

We estimate the accuracy with which various cosmological parameters can be determined from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization data when various galactic unpolarized and polarized foregrounds are included and marginalized using the multi-frequency Wiener filtering technique. We use the specifications of the future CMB missions MAP and Planck for our study. Our results are in qualitative agreement with earlier results obtained without foregrounds, though the errors in most parameters are higher because of degradation of the extraction of polarization signal in the presence of foregrounds.
