HUMM THE AUTHOR is the Head of the Interior Communications Section in the Naval Ship Engineering Center, NAVSHIPS. He holds a BS degree in physics from St. Francis College, Loretto, Pa. and has taken graduate work in electronic engineering at the University of Delaware and John Hopkins University. Mr. Humm was a physicist at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, until 1959 when he accepted a position of Project Engineer in the Ship Systems Branch at Naval Ship Research and Development Center, Annapolis. Mr. Humm came to the Bureau of Ships, Interior Communications, Navigation, Control and Computer Systems Branch, as Project Engineer for submarine systems in Ship Control and Indicating Group, then head of the Integrated Ship Systems Group, and later, head of the Voice Communications Group.
