If movies, literature, and social media are any indication, public interest in cults is greater than ever, and ordinary Americans are anxiously searching for the cults in their neighborhoods, examining fitness clubs, political movements, all manner of marketing schemes, social groups, and churches, both mainstream and fringe, for signs of cultishness. Perhaps more than even in the 1970s, cults seem to be flourishing. In addition to the full-blown cults, such as Rajneeshism or NXIVM, there are also thousands of groups like Crossfit, Amway, and Trumpism that are derided by both critics and ex-followers as cult-like.
