"In Storytelling, We See the Performance More from the Personality": The Goals and Self-Regulation on Storytellers of Other-Language

Research on the Storytelling perspectives of the storyteller is not quite new, however, further discussion is done by seeking the educational implications of Storytelling used. Therefore, this study investigates the cases of three active storytellers under the learning community in students' activity at University. The findings suggest that the teacher candidates subjectively position themselves during the learning process of becoming a good storyteller in the Storytelling Community in three ways; (a) they positioned themselves as a storyteller through self-management and self-discipline in advancing their knowledge to be a good Storytelling Performer, (b) they engaged in professional interaction with the audience and other storytellers in community, (c) as the other storytellers inside the community capitalized on their simultaneous storytelling experience as a valuable resource in the storytelling-learning community

Invisible, aesthetic, and enrolled listeners across storytelling modalities: Immersive preference as situated player type

Immersive storytelling includes narrative experiences that take place in the public spaces of theaters, theme parks, museums, and historical reenactment sites; on tabletops, where role-playing games are collaboratively played; in fictional spaces superimposed on the real world during a live-action role-playing (larping) event; and in hybrid, asynchronous, and transmediated spaces that blend the digital, the virtual, and the real. Understood as a kind of boundary object, a player typology can incorporate multiple perspectives and heterogeneous sources of information, producing ‘ideal types’, which provide a framework for observation and discussion across immersive modalities. This paper offers a typology of situated immersive preference, in which narrative immersion and embodied immersion are understood to vary independently of one another. Along the vertical axis listener-players of immersive storytelling experiences are classified as narratively attached, narratively detached, or narratively opposed. Across the horizontal axis of embodied engagement, listener-players are classified as invisible, aesthetic, or enrolled. Nine ideal types emerge at the intersection of these narrative and embodied preferences. Why someone might fit into one category rather than another reflects comfort rather than personality. Situated immersive types are understood to be fluid and temporary configurations. The degree to which players are willing to engage and are comfortable with what they are being asked to do may differ dramatically from experience to experience and from day to day, and even during a single session, reflecting how they feel at a given moment, which is affected by who they are with and how they are perceived and treated by others. This framework for understanding immersive preferences calls for the design of more widely inclusive story worlds.

“It’s not often that people want to hear me talk about my life”: Storytelling experiences of people with aphasia in an interdisciplinary songwriting project

Purpose Storytelling is an integral part of human life, providing opportunities for social closeness, relationship development, and identity exploration. Having aphasia can disrupt the ability to convey stories across a variety of settings. Structured songwriting frameworks may provide people with aphasia an opportunity to successfully engage in this medium for storytelling. Method Three individuals with aphasia participated in a structured songwriting intervention modified to support individuals with aphasia. Each participant-songwriter co-constructed three songs about their life in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team. Data about the songwriting process were collected via individual semi-structured qualitative interview and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis to identify superordinate themes and subthemes. Result The overarching superordinate theme related to the process itself as a catalyst that occurred as a result of participating in a songwriting intervention modified for individuals with aphasia. Three subthemes were identified: (a) relationship-centred experience, (b) engagement in meaningful activities, and (c) identity exploration. Conclusion Songwriting may provide meaningful opportunities for people with aphasia to experience the power of sharing stories about themselves. Key components of this experience aligned with the core elements of the positive psychology PERMA (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishments) framework. Findings support incorporating storytelling through songwriting into the rehabilitation journey for individuals with aphasia.

He Inoa 'Ala: Scent, Memory, and Identity in Indigenous Comics

Abstract: More than any other of the bodily senses, Native Hawaiians rely on scent to navigate the world around us: it is the form through which we understand the language of the land and by extension, one another. It is the means through which we maintain memories and preserve stories, tucked away between the blossoms of fragrant flowers and billowing from plumes of volcanic sulfur and steam. How do we share these stories in a way more aligned with the worldview of our ancestors while still utilizing the power and pervasiveness of contemporary media? How do we confront the historiographical challenges of reproducing these storytelling landscapes radically altered by settler colonialism, including the loss of language and environmental destruction? My paper, "He Inoa 'Ala: Scent, Memory, and Identity in Indigenous Comics," is a graphic essay that explores the potential sensory aesthetics has in developing a uniquely Native Hawaiian approach to creating comics and graphic novels. Through real-time trial and error, this paper is an active series of experimentations to discover where the visual and pictorial language of comics and the layered storytelling experiences of Hawaiian mo'olelo–place-based storied histories–productively meld together and strengthen the formal qualities of one another. Spiraling through historical analysis of colonial deodorization in the form of the 19th century sandalwood trade and weaving in and out of personal narrative, "He Inoa 'Ala" is my attempt to push the boundaries of both cartooning and scholarly writing, all in the effort to discover creative methods that can be used to illustrate an entirely new genre of Indigenous graphic literature.

This study examines the factors that make Netflix's interactive movie “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” an interactive storytelling content that can achieve both interactivity and narrative immersion. The existing interactive storytelling content mainly takes the form of a multivariable plot, which gives the user freedom of choice, but is limited in providing the full dramatic experience of an epic story that moves toward one ending by the laws of probability and inevitability. However, “Bandersnatch” breaks the convention that multivariable plots are boring and repetitive through the mechanism of limited choices and returning to plot points, and provides a new interactive storytelling experience. It also allows the user to exist inside and outside the character at the same time through a compressed story summary and the semanticization of repeated choices. At this time, the user agency experienced a kind of failure, but it served to attract users to expand the story world by themselves by experiencing more possibilities. Through this study, we have revealed the differentiating significance of <Bandersnatch> that distinguishes it from existing interactive storytelling contents.

Figurative Language Applied In “The Show” Album By Niall Horan

Songs and language are inseparable companions in the world of music. Language is the framework on which songs are constructed, allowing songwriters and performers to engage audiences intellectually and emotionally by sharing their thoughts, feelings, and tales in songs. Figurative language and songs share a deep and symbiotic relationship. In order to give their lyrics emotion, depth, and inventiveness, lyricists employ a variety of figurative language techniques. This helps listeners engage with the music on a visceral and emotional level. Figurative language is an effective tool for turning lyrics into an engaging and memorable storytelling experience. The objective is to find out the figurative language applied in ‘The Show’ Album by Niall Horan. The method used for this study is descriptive qualitative method and used Kennedy and Gioia (1995) figurative languages as the theory. Various sources such as undergraduate thesis, articles, books, and internet sources are used to provide further information. The findings of this article are seven songs on the album that contain figurative language. The result is that four data in simile is found, one data in metaphor, five data in hyperbole, four data in personification, three in metonymy, and one in synecdoche.

Creating good knowledge together: heartful-communal storytelling at the intersection of caregiving and academia

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore a novel storytelling approach that investigates lived experience at the intersection of motherhood/caregiving and Ph.D. pursuits. The paper contributes to the feminist tradition of writing differently through the process of care that emerges from shared stories.Design/methodology/approachUsing a process called heartful-communal storytelling, the authors evoke personal and embodied stories and transgressive narratives. The authors present a composite process drawing on heartful-autoethnography, dialogic writing and communal storytelling.FindingsThe paper makes two key contributions: (1) the paper illustrates a novel feminist process in action and (2) the paper contributes six discrete stories of lived experience at the intersection of parenthood and Ph.D. studies. The paper also contributes to the development of the feminist tradition of writing differently. Three themes emerged through the storytelling experience, and these include (1) creating boundaries and transgressing boundaries, (2) giving and receiving care and (3) neoliberal conformity and resistance. These themes, like the stories, also became entangled.Originality/valueThe paper demonstrates how heartful-communal storytelling can lead to individual and collective meaning making. While the Ph.D. is a solitary path, the authors' heartful-communal storytelling experience teaches that holding it separate from other relationships can impoverish what is learnt and constrain the production of good knowledge; the epistemic properties of care became self-evident.

Marketing Strategy of Commercial Micro-Movie Advertising: A Case Study of Laodu

With the development of new media and the change in consumer taste, consumers' interest in traditional advertising has decreased. The form of advertising has undergone tremendous changes. This paper highlights the importance of Micro-Movie in contemporary advertising and marketing and presents a case study of the marketing strategy used in LaoDu. Combining cinematic techniques and advertising campaigns, micro-movie advertising provides a condensed but powerful storytelling experience that can evoke emotional resonance and build brand image. However, only some companies can succeed with micro-movie advertising, as it requires balancing commercial objectives with artistic and educational values. The analysis of LaoDu demonstrates the effectiveness of its placement channel selection, narrative strategy, emotional marketing, senior marketing, and word-of-mouth marketing, offering inspiration and guidance for other brands' marketing efforts.

I'm in Tales MOOC on Tangible User Interfaces and the UDL Model: A Case Study Design.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) developed on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles within the I'm in Tales Erasmus Project, focused on Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) and their potential in enhancing storytelling for inclusive education. The MOOC aims to equip educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to design and implement TUIs in educational settings, promoting their understanding of TUIs as tools for creating accessible and engaging storytelling experiences for all learners. The course follows a self-paced and independent learning approach, incorporating active, contextual, social, and reflective learning methods. Preliminary evaluation results are discussed, and further evaluation methods are planned to assess the MOOC's impact on educators' understanding of TUIs and their potential for inclusive education. The use case presented illustrates the practical application of TUIs in universally designed learning experiences. The study concludes that the MOOC provides a valuable resource for educators and learners interested in TUIs and their role in enhancing inclusive education.

Storytelling in the Digital Age: Examining the Role and Effectiveness in Communication Strategies of Social Media Content Creators

This research examines the factors influencing storytelling effectiveness in social media content creation. The research objectives are to explore the role of storytelling and understand its impact on content creation strategies. A case study approach is employed, with a purposively selected content creator as the primary participant. In-depth interviews are conducted, and thematic analysis is used to analyze the data. Findings highlight the importance of authenticity, relatability, and visual appeal in engaging the audience. Real experiences and values establish trust and connections with the audience, while high-quality visuals enhance the storytelling experience. Emotional engagement, concise storytelling, and active audience engagement also emerge as key factors. The research contributes to understanding effective communication strategies for content creators on social media platforms. By leveraging authenticity, relatability, visual appeal, emotional engagement, concise storytelling, and active audience engagement, content creators can enhance their storytelling strategies. The study acknowledges the limitations of a single case study and subjective interpretations.

IS DIGITAL STORYTELLING FUNCTIONAL IN SOCIOSCIENTIFIC ISSUES? PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS' EXPERIENCES

This study sought answers to the following question: “Is digital storytelling functional in teaching socioscientific issues?” In the framework of the study, digital stories were prepared individually by nine pre-service teachers on nine different socioscientific topics to find the answer to this question. The data of the present study, which was conducted with action research, were collected by using two different methods: pre and post-interviews and digital stories. Content analysis was used to analyze the interviews and the digital stories were analyzed by using the "digital story evaluation rubric". According to the results obtained during pre-interviews, the participants did not have digital storytelling experience before and did not have much knowledge about digital storytelling. After the implementation, the participants had predominantly positive views towards digital storytelling and that the digital storytelling could be a functional method in teaching socioscientific issues. When the participant products (digital stories) were evaluated in line with the criteria in the literature, it was concluded that the digital stories were prepared at a very satisfactory level, but the content part in the digital stories prepared by the participants lacked discussion questions about the selected socioscientific issues and the issues could not be addressed in an impartial way.

“Many people know nothing about us”: narrative medicine applications at a student-run free clinic

ABSTRACT Narrative medicine is an approach to healthcare that acknowledges the stories of patients’ lives both within and beyond the clinical setting. Narrative medicine has been increasingly recognized as a promising tool to support modern educational needs in health professions training, such as interprofessional practice, while enhancing quality of care. Here, we describe the development, implementation, and application of a narrative medicine program at the University of Minnesota Phillips Neighborhood Clinic. First, in a qualitative analysis of patient stories (n = 12) we identified themes regarding the value of the storytelling experience; patients’ personal journeys; and patients’ experiences in healthcare and other systems. Second, an interprofessional educational activity for student volunteers (n = 57) leveraging a patient narrative was observed to be satisfactory, significantly improve attitudes toward the underserved, and enhance quality of care from the perspectives of trainees. Together, findings from the two studies imply the potential benefits of broader incorporation of narrative medicine into interprofessional service settings, for both learners and patients.

Black Widow and Spider Monkey Optimization can be used to optimize the placement and distribution of 3D assets in cloud storage systems, improving data access and retrieval times. The algorithms can also optimize the scheduling of rendering tasks in cloud-based rendering pipelines, leading to more efficient and cost-effective rendering processes. The integration of 3D cloud environments and optimization algorithms enables real-time optimization and adaptation of 3D simulations. This allows for dynamic adjustments of simulation parameters based on changing conditions, resulting in improved accuracy and responsiveness. Moreover, it explores the impact of 3D cloud simulation technology on the artistic process, examining how it influences the artistic vision, aesthetics, and narrative possibilities in animation film and television. Storytelling in Development: universal technologies and current contexts

The article is devoted to storytelling technology, which involves the production and promotion of optimized stories in the interests of companies and their products. The authors explore the dynamic development of this area of science and practice from structuring universal technologies to focusing on certain models of construction and actual application of these technologies in various socio-economic contexts. As a special perspective, the authors consider the interrelated concepts of “storytelling” and “conflict”, which perform the task of conflict management in order to obtain a positive effect. It is shown how the conflict component of the story simultaneously serves to make it more attractive and to promote the conflict towards its constructive solution. The practice of creating immersive stories that arise spontaneously or in an organized manner among consumers and the media, as well as the reaction of companies to them in the form of creating counterstories, is demonstrated. The experience of storytelling of three major corporations is analyzed: Procter & Gamble, Philip Morris and McDonald’s.

The power of organizational storytelling: The story of a company in times of transformation

Organizational storytelling is a way to share information, guide decision-making, and affect how well a business does. Employee attitudes are molded through storytelling, which also has an empowering effect on employees. This is particularly true in times of change and transformation (Wilson, 2019). Storytelling is grounded in constructivist narrative learning theory (Clark & Rossiter, 2008). The purpose of this study is to explore the use of storytelling by a leading company in the telecommunications sector in the Middle East. A qualitative methodology was adopted, using interviews as a research tool to provide an in-depth narrative of individuals’ experiences of storytelling during a time of organizational transformation. Twenty employees participated in this study, across managerial and non-managerial roles. The main conclusion is that storytelling is overall perceived positively by company employees who adopt this tool. In times of crises and transformation, this tool contributes to change, a collective culture, communication, unity, employee well-being, and productivity.

성인초기 여성의 몸 이야기 경험에 관한 내러티브 탐구

Objectives This study aims to understand the process of recognizing identity as a woman and reconstructing the identity through young adult women's storytelling of bodies and to explore the meaning of storytelling experience about the body. Methods For this purpose, narrative inquiry suitable for understanding the life experience and the meaning within the experience was performed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, experience reports, and e-mails from August 2020 to March 2021 for two women in their late 20s who participated in a group counseling program that talked about their bodies, and focused on the three-dimensional points of time, sociality, and place according to the narrative inquiry method. Results The results of this study are as follows. First, through the experience of telling stories of the body, the research participants became accepted themselves that did not match the ideal femininity that they were previously unconscious or ashamed of. Second, the participants' relationship with others expanded by re-thinking the relationship with important others through their storytelling of the body and accepting others. Third, All participants were able to experience a change in their self-identity by interpreting their own story anew within the safe and receptive group. Conclusions This study understands how young adult women's body storytelling experience of the body affect their perception of gender identity, and demonstrates how repressed identities can be reconstructed through telling stories of the women’s body. Through this result, we confirmed the meaning of the experience of telling stories of the body as an opportunity for young adult women to accept themselves and as a scaffolding for growth. In addition, by revealing the meaning and value of the storytelling of the woman's body, we expect to provide a momentum that the storytelling of the woman's body, which was oppressed in a male-dominated society, will be dealt with in the stage of public discourses.

Design Techniques for COVID-19 Story Maps: A Quantitative Content Analysis

ABSTRACT Story maps have emerged as a popular storytelling device in recent years with cartographers and journalists leveraging geospatial web technologies to create unique spatial narratives. However, empirical research analyzing the design of story maps remains limited. Two recently proposed design frameworks provide promising avenues to characterize story maps in terms of elements of vivid cartography and techniques of map-based storytelling. In this article, I conducted a quantitative content analysis on 117 story maps of COVID-19 to operationalize map-based storytelling and vividness frameworks and to identify common design traits in contemporary story maps. My findings indicated that most story maps are longform infographics that use scrolling to advance the narrative. Stories applied a variety of attention, dosing, and mood techniques to enrich the storytelling experience. Story maps were primarily vivid through their use of color and novelty. Overall, most story maps utilized only a fraction of the map-based storytelling framework techniques. This research also demonstrated that it is challenging to analyze story maps based on these frameworks. Finally, this article improves the frameworks by proposing two new story map techniques and suggesting avenues of refinement.

A Multisensorial Storytelling Design Strategy to Build Empathy and a Culture of Inclusion.

The Wondrous Goggles project is a multisensorial storytelling design strategy to explore the experiential world of people who are blind or have low vision, with the aim of raising awareness about inclusive places for work and play. The need for this exploratory storytelling design strategy is predominantly educational, as a tool to inform designers, policy makers, and technology developers of how people with blindness or low vision experience public spaces. The Wondrous Googles are specifically designed to facilitate an understanding of the navigational and spatial perception of people with low vision. During use, the Wondrous Goggles enable the user to gain a sense of limited vision and provide a vehicle for the wearer to embark upon a process of feeling, sensing, and reflecting while listening to the narration of someone who has navigated the space with low vision. Unlike other technologies that create virtual reality, or an augmented reality based on vision alone, the Wondrous Goggles create a multisensorial storytelling experience through the lived experience of a person with low vision, to gain an understanding of people's lived experiences in navigating public spaces, in order to create cultures of inclusion.
