Modular design and custom development in ERP systems

Abstract. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are integral to modern business operations, offering streamlined processes and enhanced efficiency. This paper explores the advantages and disadvantages of modular design in ERP systems and examines custom development methods to address unique industry requirements. The study highlights the benefits of modular design, such as flexibility, scalability, and reduced complexity, while also addressing challenges like integration issues and system fragmentation. Strategies for efficient module integration, including standardized protocols and middleware solutions, are discussed to mitigate these challenges. Custom development methods, including vendor tools, scratch-built modules, and third-party collaborations, are analyzed for their effectiveness in achieving tailored ERP solutions. Case studies from the manufacturing, healthcare, and retail industries illustrate the practical applications and outcomes of modular ERP systems, providing insights into the implementation process and potential obstacles. The findings underscore the importance of careful planning, stakeholder involvement, and comprehensive training to ensure successful ERP system deployment and utilization.

Developing ERP Post Implementation Success Framework through Group Decision Support Systems

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) success research is extensive and most approach models to measure its implementations success fall short of measuring post-implementation success. Instead of depending on previous frameworks that declare an ERP a failure if framework restrictions not met, this study suggests a novel methodology for assessing the implementation of any ERP method and its subsequent success via group decision support system. The study showed improved ERP system success when implemented with organizational culture improvement through GDSS but success was better when combined with access to more IT resources. There was improvement in Post ERP-implementation success (system quality, information quality, organizational impact, workgroup impact and individual impact) of the organization. Also, implementing ERP without GDSS does not reduces the success when it has access to IT resources. For ERP system post-implementation impact, IT resources capacity of the organization be improved and GDSS engaged to give users opinion.

Evaluation of organizational climate factors on tax administration enterprise resource planning (ERP) system

Tax collection is an essential activity to boost the economy of all countries. Larger businesses and governments are increasingly relying on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, which are designed to enhance the collection of revenues among other things. However, the implementation of an ERP system often affects the organizational climate by changing the manner businesses are conducted from the past both internally and externally. These changes have the tendency to impact the actions of workers throughout the transition process. Nevertheless, organization climate which is an essential variable to measure the success of ERPs is mostly underutilized. Thus in this study, we proposed an information system (IS) success model that integrates organizational climate variables namely, role clarity, teamwork and support, and, training and learning into the DeLone and McLean model to evaluate the success of a tax ERP system. The proposed model was based on a quantitative and a mixed-method case study (MM-CS). Data was gathered from a top company with many branches in Ghana through interviews, observation, focus groups, and questionnaires. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to examine the 555 data collected from the questionnaire. The result of the study shows that the organizational climate variables (training & learning, teamwork & support, and role clarity) were statistically significant in determining the success of a tax ERP system. Training & learning and teamwork & support also had a positive impact on service quality, user satisfaction, and individual impact.

Comparison of Factors Affecting Enterprise Resource Planning System Success in the Middle East

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems have been widely studied during the past decade, yet they often fail to deliver the intended benefits originally expected. One notable reason for their failures is the lack of understanding in users' requirements. This study was designed to understand the relative importance of system quality, information quality, service quality, and their influence on ERP users in the Middle East. The dependent variable individual impact was used to represent the ERP success at the individual level of analysis. The results from this study were compared to the results attained by Petter et al. in their 2008 analysis of North American ERP users. In addition, the moderating effect of users' characteristics on the individual impact variable was examined along an investigation of the items' reliability, internal consistency, convergent, and discriminant validity. Assessing the level of impact from users may help organizations assess the impacts of ERP users' performance and productivity and create training to improve attitudes toward ERP systems.

Evaluating ERP System Merging Success In Chemical Companies: System Quality, Information Quality, And Service Quality

Abstract This study is aimed to analyze success of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System Merging in Chemical Company Singapore that acquired two companies. The success component of ERP system success is using DeLone and McLean success model with qualitative method. The research methodology used detail interview with project implementation team, ERP consultants (8 informants) to get more detail from ERP system merging with information and collected supporting data from the ERP system itself. The result shows that ERP System Merging succeed to increase the system quality of Chemical Company which acquired two companies into one ERP system. It was depicted by the increment of easiness on using the system. The information much more integrated and accurate after the ERP system merging. Meanwhile service quality was increased because of all incidents now monitored in one efficient log system and handled by experienced IT application support team.

Principal Component Analysis on Morphological Variability of Critical Success Factors for Enterprise Resource Planning

The concept of critical success factors (CSFs) has been widely used as a measure to tackle the hurdles associated with numerous implementations of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. This study evaluates the morphological variability of CSFs using the analytical principal component analysis technique to identify principal components (PCs) that can be adopted for a successful ERP system implementation. The dataset of 205 CSFs from 127 different studies was evaluated for the morphological variability in those studies. According to the results, 66 PCs were identified and ranked accordingly. The first 49 PCs with eigenvalues greater than 1 accounted for 89.67 % of the variability recorded. The first 6 PCs respectively accounted for 13.67%, 19.37%, 24.67%, 29.41%, 33.52% and 36.94% cumulative variations. In general, the graphical illustration of the study results show the palpable division between the taxonomic groups for 3 PCs.

The influence of ERP system usage on agile capabilities

PurposeSynthesising theories of enterprise resource planning (ERP), psychological empowerment and agile capabilities, the purpose of this paper is to build and test a novel theoretical model linking ERP system usage with agile capabilities via users’ psychological empowerment in Jordanian commercial banks.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire was developed to collect the relevant data based on the extant literature. The population of this study consisted of all ERP system users working at Jordanian commercial banks in Amman City. The questionnaire was circulated to a purposive sample of actual users of ERP systems for two reasons. First, it was not possible to obtain a list of actual ERP users in each bank, for security and privacy reasons. Second, actual users of ERP systems are the most relevant source of information.FindingsThe results revealed that ERP system usage has a significant positive impact on both agile capabilities and users’ psychological empowerment. The results also showed that users’ psychological empowerment has a significant positive impact on agile capabilities. In addition, the results provide empirical evidence that users’ psychological empowerment plays a mediating role between ERP system usage and all agile capabilities except responsiveness. Furthermore, by adding users’ psychological empowerment to the original research model, the study demonstrates a good predictive relevance for agile capabilities.Research limitations/implicationsThe study only focuses on Jordanian commercial banks; it is a cross-sectional study; and the study data were subjective, reflecting respondents’ opinion on specific time.Practical implicationsPractitioners struggle to ensure high levels of ERP usage by target users, to achieve implementation success and to achieve expected benefits. More often, practitioners have focused on the ERP system project team, vendors and technical issues, but have ignored the human side of the implementation process. Hence, they have failed to acknowledge the role of psychological empowerment in ERP system acceptance and success. Practitioners are advised to promote the ERP system as a facilitation and empowerment tool for users rather than a means of surveillance and control. Moreover, practitioners can avoid high rates of ERP failure in the adoption and post-adoption stages by changing the aim of the ERP system introduction from increasing efficiency and visibility to enhancing users’ psychological empowerment. Practitioners can leverage agile capabilities to respond to changes in the business environment by ensuring healthy psychological empowerment for all ERP users to use the system to its full capacity and to exchange information between functional units in real time. Practitioners must ensure users’ psychological readiness to use the system before the system goes live.Originality/valueThe study developed and tested a new research model using the SmartPLS approach in a novel context.

The effect of task characteristics on enterprise resource planning system success with user characteristics and organizational characteristics as mediating variables

Enterprise Resource Planning(ERP) is an integrated system that provides a wide range of benefits for the company, but there are still many companies who have unsuccessfully implemented ERP system. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the task characteristic and the success of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) on the success of ERP, with the user characteristic and organizational characteristic as mediating variables. The data were collected by using a questionnaire distributed directly to users of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in Indonesian companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange (ISE). The data were processed by using Partial Least Square (PLS). It was found that the suitability of the task significantly affects the success of an ERP system, either directly or mediated by the user variable characteristic and organizational characteristic. Task difficulty also significantly affects the success of an ERP system if mediated by the convenience variable (user characteristic). The success of the ERP system is determined by based tasks and task complexity through the system the user's convenience in using the information system.

Antecedents for the Success of the Adoption of Organizational ERP Among Higher Education Institutions and Competitive Advantage in Egypt

Although the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system has long been acknowledged in higher education institutions (HEIs) to improve their performance and efficiency, there are not many HEIs in Egypt that adopt ERP system and those that do are in an early stage. The research on ERP system in HEI is still limited and in the immature stage, hence little is known about the success factors for the adoption stage of ERP systems. Consequently, this article aims to understand what are the success factors for ERP adoption and further develop a conceptual model that explains the successful implementation of ERP in HEIs and its impact on competitive advantage. Based on previous studies, this paper identifies and conceptualizes success factors for ERP and further develops the proposed model for the adoption of ERP system in HEIs. This article contributes to the development of the theoretical framework of the successful implementation of the ERP system to explain the competitive advantage of HEI by merging information system (IS) success and diffusion of innovation (DOI) theories with the success factors for the adoption stage of ERP systems. The current study will provide recommendations and guidelines for both the potential adopters and the vendors on the successful ERP system adoption.

The Effects of Social Capital and Individual Factors on Knowledge Sharing Among ERP System Users

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is a management technology that advocates an integrated approach to conduct business. Before organizations apply technology to improve the overall performance, they must understand what their employees need to use it. ERP systems are knowledge intensive, which require high level of knowledge absorption and knowledge sharing between organizational members in order to be used successfully. Since the knowledge sharing is a key factor to use the ERP system, therefore this study aims to identify the social capital and individual factors affecting knowledge sharing among ERP users in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A quantitative method was employed using a self-administered questionnaire technique to collect data from 413 ERP users in Jordanian SMEs and SPSS software to analyse the data. This study found that social networks, trust, shared vision, self-efficacy, absorptive capacity; extrinsic motivation and intrinsic factors have influenced significantly on knowledge sharing among ERP users. Such a finding could provide guidelines for the management to enhance knowledge sharing among ERP users for successful ERP system usage.

IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS OF ERP SYSTEMS � QUALITATIVE-EMPIRICAL FINDINGS FROM LARGE AUSTRIAN ENTERPRISES OF THE INDUSTRY SECTOR

ABSTRACT The implementation of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system is a complex project that requires considerable financial and personnel resources and its success relies on various factors. Because of the firm size and the associated complexity of the company, especially large enterprises preparing for an ERP system implementation have to face multilayered challenges (e.g. composition of the project team). Based on a qualitative-empirical study in 20 large Austrian enterprises of the industry sector, a process model was developed to explain the significant stages responsible for a successful ERP system implementation. The findings elucidate the factors (e.g. information provision to employees) within the various stages of an ERP system implementation that influence the implementation process. This first time qualitative-empirical study in large Austrian enterprises of the industry sector contributes to the ERP system literature and illustrates the significant implications of an ERP system implementation in large Austrian enterprises of the industry sector. A Combined Fuzzy Method for Evaluating Criteria in Enterprise Resource Planning Implementation

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) system is an information system that supports and integrates many facets of a business, sales, and marketing. ERP system success depends on the rigor of the ERP Implementation processes. Scope creep, inadequate allocation of human resources over time, and vendor management are some common problems associated with the implementation of an enterprise system. This paper evaluates critical elements of ERP system that contributed to the success of the ERP implementation. For those organizations adopting ERP, the findings provide a roadmap to follow in order to avoid making critical, ERP Implementation mistakes. In this study, the combined fuzzy method is applied to assess ERP implementation factors. The combined fuzzy method is also capable of taking into consideration both tangible and intangible criteria. This method not only leads to a logical result but also visualizes the impact of various criteria on the final result. Applying the characteristics of dependence and feedback to combined fuzzy method could result in assessments that are more precise than those possible with other multiple criteria decision making approaches. The combined fuzzy method provides a useful assessment approach to this study. The benefits of using the combined fuzzy method for evaluating the ERP implementation come from the clear priority weights between alternatives. Also, a real case study from Iran is also presented to demonstrate efficiency of this method in practice.

An empirical investigation of knowledge management competence for enterprise resource planning systems success: insights from Jordan

The primary objective of the study reported herein is to empirically test the implicit, positive relationships between ERP-related Knowledge Management Competence (KM-competence; knowledge creation, knowledge retention, knowledge transfer, and knowledge application) dimensions and the extended Enterprise Resource Planning System Success construct (ERP system success; individual impact, workgroup impact, organisational impact, information quality, system quality, and vender/consultant quality). Data were collected from 173 of business and IT managers in 455 organisations in Jordan. Statistical techniques employed included confirmatory factor analysis to examine validity of the measurement model, and structural equation modelling using AMOS 16.0 is also utilised to test the hypotheses. The results of analysis show there is a positive significant impact of ERP knowledge creation on ERP success. Also, ERP knowledge retention positively and significantly affects ERP system success. Moreover, ERP knowledge transfer positively and significantly influence ERP system success. Furthermore, ERP knowledge application has positive effect on ERP system success. The results also indicate that ERP success construct is robust since all six observed variables are strongly loaded to the latent variable. Research limitations as well as implications for practice and research are discussed.

The impact of implementation process on the perception of enterprise resource planning success

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of the implementation process on the ERP’s success in the post-adoption stage, measured as system’s acceptance, reliability and utility perceived by users, inside the organizations.Design/methodology/approach– The authors adopted a multiple case study research design. The data collected, provided by IT managers and 120 key-users from four companies, has been used to investigate the impact of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation phases on selected constructs of the Task-Technology Fit (TTF) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The empirical evidences highlight a direct relation between the effectiveness of the implementation phases and the ERP’s success.Findings– The research results emphasize the importance of the quality of the software, but especially the importance of the implementation phases’ management, which require technical and managerial ability of the team made up of people from the system integrator and the company’s key-users. Evidences suggest that the higher will be the organizational diffusion of an ERP implemented during a successful implementation project, the higher will be the perception of ERP success in the post-adoption stage. Moreover, the users’ perception of ERP quality will be maintained over time.Research limitations/implications– The research has some limits due to its exploratory nature and to the chosen research approach, so the results may lack generalizability; consequently future research will concern with enlargement of the sample that will allow a better generalization of the results.Practical implications– This exploratory study suggest that companies’ managers should be aware that a correct methodology of implementation, strongly influenced by the team, impacts on the technology consistency and therefore, on the ERP system success. So an appropriate choice is to invest more in the creation and development of internal and external project team than in the ERP’s brand.Originality/value– This paper fulfils an identified need to clarify the explicit relationship between the quality of implementation phases and the subsequent ERP success in the post-adoption stage measured in terms of users’ perception of information system quality.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) are information systems that destined for firm manufacturing and also service that gets role to integrate and automates business process that is engaged operation aspect, production, and distribution at firm. ERP systems is a packaged business software system that enables a company to manage the efficient and effective use of resources and providing a total integrated solution for the organization's information-processing needs. But, ERP systems success own is not easily to be reached, because ERP software is not something that while is assembled/ implementation gets to walk success by itself. In this article tries to identify critical success factors (CSFs) ERP implementation. There are 14 CSFs and 10 failure factors that shall be regarded in the ERP Implementation.

Moderating Role of Implementation Stage in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Projects in India: A Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) Approach

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation literature recommends diverse factors affecting the success of an ERP system. On the other hand, there is a lack of empirical analysis about the moderated relationship of ERP implementation stage between critical success factors (CSFs) and ERP implementation success (IS), particularly in India. With an online survey, this paper explores a framework of ERP system's success with 223 manufacturing firms completed the questionnaires on CSFs and IS of the ERP system. The results of Multi Group analysis from a Structural Equation Modeling using Analysis of Moments Structures (SEM AMOS) shows that the implementation stage is acted as a potential moderator and moderates the relationship between CSFs and IS.

An Empirical Research on the Impacts of organisational decisions’ locus, tasks structure rules, knowledge, and IT function’s value on ERP system success

This research examined the impacts of organisational decisions’ locus, tasks structure, rules and procedures, organisational actors’ information technology (IT) skills/knowledge and IT department’s or function’s value perceptions on enterprise resource planning (ERP) system success. While such antecedent factors matter in the discourse, research on their impacts on ERP success is rare. To increase understanding in the area, we proposed a research model and developed pertinent hypotheses that included the above-mentioned factors. Using a cross-sectional field survey, we collected data from 165 firms in three European countries. Data analysis was performed using the partial least squares (PLS) technique. Statistical support was found for 11 out of the 17 hypotheses formulated. Organisational design constructs, i.e. tasks structure, rules and procedures, in-house IT personnel skills/knowledge have impacts on ERP success, whereas the perceptions of IT function’s value and business employees’ IT skills/knowledge did not. Contributions and practical implications of the research are discussed.

FAKTOR-FAKTOR YANG MEMPENGARUHI KESUKSESAN SISTEM ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANING (ERP) PADA PERUSAHAAN PERBANKAN

This study aims to analyze factors affecting the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system success in banking. This research was conducted at Bank Mandiri as Surakarta. This research was conducted by the method of primary data. The data are drawn from questionaires distributed to the employees of Bank Mandiri who use the SAP system in Surakarta. This study used purposive sampling technique. The number of samples in this study was 81 (eightty one). The analytical method used is multiple regression analysis to test this hypothesis. The results of this study found that system quality, individual impact, workgroup impact and organizational impact, significant influence on ERP system success, whereas information quality hasn’t significant influence on ERP system success.

Satisfaction Structure of the Implementation Effect of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP): An Analysis from the Management Style Perspective of Japanese Firms

The aim of this study is to identify ways to improve the effectiveness of enterprise resource planning (ERP) system implementation in Japanese firms, taking into consideration their unique style in management and information systems development including their tendency to use customized software. The paper presents a statistical analysis of the degree of satisfaction regarding the structure of ERP implementation using a model constructed by the authors that is based on the characteristics of Japanese firms. An ERP system is one way to implement an enterprise information system (EIS) that responds to business issues, such as creating or sustaining competitive advantages or improving business operation efficiency. An ERP is frequently implemented with business process re-engineering (BPR) and business process standardization. The success of an ERP system depends on effective implementation; hence, the critical success factors (CSFs) of ERP implementation have become an important subject for study. Although CSFs are generally common among countries throughout the world, some CSFs differ because of a country's economic growth status or information system history and trends of the country. This situation is true for Japanese firms as well as firms in other countries.
