Digital maritime container terminal - an element of digitalization of container transportation systems

Sea container terminals are an important infrastructure element in the global supply chain. An increase in the number and size of container ships, as well as an increase in container traffic, led to the expansion of sea container terminals and an increase in their capacity. Extra-large container vessels require more handling equipment, as well as more storage space for containers, and increased throughput capacity for supporting infrastructures. To solve these complex problems in a global competition, the search for integrated effective solutions is required. The article proposes a solution to the integrated digitalization of the sea container terminal.

Supply Chain Modeling in the Aftermath of a Disaster: A System Dynamics Approach in Housing Recovery

Severe catastrophic natural disasters adversely affect housing stock and regional capacity to build and repair houses, with unfavorable impacts on the business continuity of industrial and business organizations resting on that affected community. Restoring industrial capacity and business continuity is crucial for the organizations’ survival in the aftermath of a disaster but the process takes time while the affected region faces an unexpected surge in the demand for housing. Modeling approaches largely used in the supply chain management realm may support humanitarian logistics and policy-making by providing a testbed in which supply chain elements of the recovery process can be examined before implementing. This research presents a system dynamics model that considers the problem of housing recovery from the demand and supply perspective and provides significant insights for policymakers into how the production of permanent housing depends upon the uncertainties and feedback effects of material and labor. In order to highlight its utility, a hypothetical scenario in which a hurricane hits the U.S. Hampton Roads region, which is a major population center along the mid-Atlantic coast, has been configured by using actual data collected from both governmental and academic sources.

Electronic Immunization Registries in Tanzania and Zambia: Shaping a Minimum Viable Product for Scaled Solutions.

As part of the work the Better Immunization Data (BID) Initiative undertook starting in 2013 to improve countries' collection, quality, and use of immunization data, PATH partnered with countries to identify the critical requirements for an electronic immunization registry (EIR). An EIR became the core intervention to address the data challenges that countries faced but also presented complexities during the development process to ensure that it met the core needs of the users. The work began with collecting common system requirements from 10 sub-Saharan African countries; these requirements represented the countries' vision of an ideal system to track individual child vaccination schedules and elements of supply chain. Through iterative development processes in both Tanzania and Zambia, the common requirements were modified and adapted to better fit the country contexts and users' needs, as well as to be developed with the technology available at the time. This process happened across four different software platforms. This paper outlines the process undertaken and analyzes similarities and differences across the iterations of the EIR in both countries, culminating in the development of a registry in Zambia that includes the most critical aspects required for initially deploying the registry and embodies what could be considered the minimum viable product for an EIR.

The article deals with the issue of the expediency of identifying the criteria for the evaluation of international logistics freight forwarding organizations in the conditions of the rapid development of the Ukrainian furniture industry. The purpose of the research is to establish criteria for the evaluation of international logistics freight forwarding firms in view of the existing prospects in the development of the furniture industry in Ukraine and its definite orientation towards foreign economic activity. The object of the research is a logistics enterprise on the Ukrainian furniture market in a chain of international cooperation and interaction. The methods used in the research. The methodological basis for the study is the system of scientific methods used in the complex to achieve the goal and solve the tasks. The dialectical method made it possible to substantiate the causal relationships in the process of positioning a logistics company in the Ukrainian furniture market. The historical method has been used in the study of historical experience of the chronology of events and facts on the Ukrainian furniture market. In order to obtain research findings, also general scientific system and logical methods are used. The international conventions of bilateral treaties, legislative acts of Ukraine, reference books became the empirical base. The hypothesis of research. There is no unambiguous view on the problem of forming a single set of criteria for the assessment of international transport logistics intermediaries, therefore consideration and study of the peculiarities of the assessment of such elements of the international supply chain is open and necessary for the improvement of the activity of Ukrainian furniture enterprises. The statement of basic material. The factors that led to the activation of foreign economic activity at furniture enterprises were considered. The role and main advantages of using international forwarding intermediaries are established. The main shortcomings in the criteria sets in the existing methods of estimation of transport and logistics organizations are revealed. The originality and practical significance of the research is to offer evaluation criteria in the process of selecting potential international logistics freight forwarding partners, which should be observed by furniture companies. The expediency of using the proposed criteria was substantiated in order to facilitate the process of selecting potential transport and logistics partners for doing business in the furniture industry. Conclusions of the research. The direction of the Ukrainian market for the "conquest" of foreign markets, necessitates the improvement of existing methods for assessing the level of quality of international transport operations, helping management of logistics companies and clients to optimally assess the degree of service effectiveness, the level of satisfaction of customers, identify the weak and strong points within the framework of this activity , and adjust in accordance with this management system and innovate.

Prioritising the risks in Halal food supply chain: an MCDM approach

PurposeRisk in the Halal food supply chain is considered as the failure to deliver the product which complies with Halal standards. The purpose of this paper is to identify the risk elements associated with Halal food supply chains and prioritise them appropriately towards better management.Design/methodology/approachThis research used a systematic literature review to identify various risk elements in the Halal food supply chain and consolidate them with the expertise of professionals and academicians. Further, the fuzzy analytic hierarchical process (fuzzy AHP) is applied to prioritise the identified risk elements.FindingsThe findings of the research suggest that “supply-related risks” are the most prominent risk. Raw material integrity issue is a vital element in the Halal food supply chain. The failure of the supplier to deliver material that complies with Halal standards reduces the industrial economic advantage. This study recommends that the integration of internal processes and outsourcing elements can mitigate the risk of the Halal food supply chain by having a holistic view of the processing and delivery of Halal foods.Research limitations/implicationsSystematic literature review and experts’ opinion are used to identify and consolidate risks. For the literature review, only the SCOPUS database is used; thus, there is a chance to overlook some risk elements. Additionally, the fuzzy AHP analysis depends on relative preference weight. Therefore, care should be taken while constructing a pairwise comparison matrix for risk elements.Practical implicationsThe findings of the study can help the managers who have a holistic view on risk mitigation of the Halal food supply chain. This study may assist managers to share information about the processing of Halal food from top to bottom to manage risk.Originality/valueThis study may act as a baseline for undertaking future research in the area of risk management of the Halal food supply chain.

Improved augmented Lagrangian coordination for optimizing supply chain configuration with multiple sharing elements in industrial cluster

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to study various combination forms of the three basic sharing elements (i.e. orders sharing, manufacturers capacity sharing and suppliers capacity sharing) in the cluster supply chain (CSC), formulate a distributed model to protect enterprises’ decision privacy and seek to develop an effective method for solving the distributed complex model.Design/methodology/approachA distributed assembly cluster supply chain configuration (ACSCC) model is formulated. An improved augmented Lagrangian coordination (ALC) is proposed and used to solve the ACSCC model. A series of experiments are conducted to validate the improved ALC and the model.FindingsTwo major findings are obtained. First, the market order’s quantity change and the sales price of the product have a great impact on both the optimal results of the ACSCC and the cooperative strategy, especially, when the market order increases sharply, enterprises have to adopt multiple cooperative strategies to complete the order; meanwhile, the lower sales price of the product helps independent suppliers to get more orders. Second, the efficiency and computational accuracy of the improved ALC method are validated as compared to the centralized ALC and Lingo11.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper formulated the single-period ACSCC model under certain assumptions, yet a multi-period ACSCC model is to be developed, a more comprehensive investigation of the relationships among combination forms is to be extended further and a rigid proof of the improved ALC is necessary.Practical implicationsEnterprises in the industrial cluster should adopt different cooperative strategies in terms of the market order’s quantity change and the sales price of the product.Social implicationsThe proposed various combination forms of sharing elements and the formulated ACSCC model provide guidance to managers in the industrial cluster to choose the proper policy.Originality/valueThis research studies various combination forms of the three basic sharing elements in the CSC. A distributed ACSCC model has been established considering simultaneously multiple sharing elements. An improved ALC is presented and applied to the ACSCC problem.

Mining company as an effective element in coal supply to the regions of the Far North

The companies belonging to chains of mining, transportation and consumption of coal to the hard-to-reach regions use their own, often contradictory criteria for the assessment of their work efficiency. Because of that the possibilities to improve the processes of coal quality control in the interests of fuel-chain targets common to mining companies are not used rationally. This situation is more acute in the Far North, primarily in the northern regions of Yakutia. This is due to the extreme combination and negative effect of a number of geographic, climatic, mining-geological and logistical factors. The fulfillment of all operations here, from prospecting of deposits and ending with the distribution of energy received from coal, is complicated, which leads to a significant rise in price. Approaches to improving the work of open-pits as effective elements of coal supply chains, applied in practice, geotechnological and organizational solutions in the planning and management of mining operations can and should be adjusted on the basis of developed proposals, including additional coal preparation in the opencast mines for deliveries. Their realization allows increasing consumer properties of coal shipped to the market with a reduction in its total qualitative and quantitative losses.

Evaluating the Eccentricities of Poplar Stem Profiles with Terrestrial Laser Scanning

The value of wood for different timber assortments can vary by a factor of ten. Optimization of stem assortments is, hence, a key element in the wood products supply chain, particularly for plantations. ‘Taper functions’ are commonly used in other countries to tackle this issue. In Italy, this approach has not yet entered operational use. These functions are developed based on measures of stem diameters taken at different distances from the base. Such measurements are commonly taken felling the tree and using a tape meter and tree caliper, clearly assuming some approximations. This research assesses the advantages, in terms of assortments evaluation, that can be obtained if the diameters at different heights are extracted adequately to process terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) output. TLS data have been collected, in a poplar plantation, on 36 trees distributed on three stands with different plantation densities in Padana Plane, Italy. The estimated profiles display high variability with an average of 1.6 cm of lateral compression. The results from this study demonstrate the potential and feasibility of estimating bole eccentricity by TLS, providing preliminary tools that will hopefully favor the diffusion of taper functions in operational environments.

The collaborative multi-level lot-sizing problem with cost synergies

Collaborative operations planning is a key element of modern supply chains. We introduce the collaborative multi-level lot-sizing problem with cost synergies. This arises if producers can realise reductions of their costs by providing more than one product in a specific time horizon. Since producers are typically not willing to reveal critical information, we propose a decentralised mechanism, where producers do not have to reveal their individual items costs. Additionally, a Genetic Algorithms-based centralised approach is developed, which we use for benchmarking. Our study shows that this approach comes very close to the a central plan, while in the decentralised one no critical information has to be shared. We compare the results to a myopic upstream planning approach, and show that these results are almost 12% worse than the centralised ones. All solution approaches are assessed on available test instances for problems without cost synergies. For the biggest available instances, the proposed centralised mechanism improves the best known solutions on average by 10.8%. The proposed decentralised mechanism can be applied to other problem classes, where collaborative decision makers aim for good plans under incomplete information.

Selection of Construction Products Suppliers According to the Condorcet Criterion

The continuous growth of competition on the construction market results in the fact that construction companies are forced to keep searching for solutions facilitating the building process and construction logistics. In the recent decades, one of the most fascinating ideas which enable a real improvement in the aspect of a company’s competitiveness on the market is supply chain management. It has undergone a transformation from fragmented actions to integrated operations intending to optimize the flow of physical resources and information. The first step towards the application of the modern logistics tools is the selection and evaluation of entities involved in a cooperation within the supply chain framework. The selection of reliable partners to supply a construction site or a building company may reduce the operational costs, minimize inventory and improve timeliness as well as the quality of offered services. Any mistakes made in the process of supplier selection may lead to issues such as supply delays, difficulties in keeping contract deadlines and even complete failure of a project or bankruptcy of a construction company. An 18th century criterion for the selection of the most preferable candidate developed by Nicolas de Condorcet is commonly accepted owing to its fair rules of choice (anyone who defeats most of their competitors in a direct confrontation wins). Due to its democratic approach, most criteria decide as to the selection of the winner. Should the choice of a winner or establishing a Condorcet ranking from the perspective of the social choice theory prove impossible, the selected candidate ought to be as much similar to a winner in the Condorcet sense as possible. The theory was developed in order to facilitate the selection of the most suitable candidate in the election, however it may also find application in the selection of a supply chain elements evaluated with the use of multiple criteria. There are a number of decision-making methods which fulfil the Condorcet criterion. They vary in their computational complexity and may provide different final order. The intention of this paper is to review the methods which may offer support while selecting the most preferable supplier of construction products.

Techno-economic analysis of a potential energy trading link between Patagonia and Japan based on CO2 free hydrogen

Abstract With regard to the Fukushima Daiichi accident in 2011 and Japan's goal to reduce CO2 emission, the Japanese government strives for an emission free “hydrogen society” in which hydrogen will be the primary energy medium. The import of hydrogen generated by means of CO2 free wind electricity from overseas can be a promising option for Japan's prospective energy supply. Besides different other factors like specific costs of electrolyzers and hydrogen shipment over long distances, the economically reasonable export of hydrogen based on renewable energy requires low levelized costs of electricity. Within the scope of this study, the underlying idea of a hydrogen supply chain is taken up and revisited by means of a spatially highly resolved wind energy potential analysis and a detailed investigation of the supply chain elements between Patagonia and Japan. Our analysis reveals that approximately 25% of the total land area in Patagonia would be eligible. Approx. 33,000 turbines with a minimum number of 4500 full-load hours with an overall capacity of about 115 GW can be positioned. Taking into consideration the related average number of 4750 full-load hours and an electrolysis efficiency of 0.7, this leads to a potential production of about 11.5 million tons/year of hydrogen. So the wind power potential of Patagonia would theoretically be sufficient for the assumed Japanese hydrogen demand of 8.83 million tons/year. The total hydrogen pretax cost would amount to approx. 4.40 €/kgH2 at a liquid state at the harbor of Yokohama. Hence, the final specific costs of hydrogen in Japan depend on the expansion of wind power in Patagonia and therefore hydrogen based on wind energy can be cost-competitive to conventional fuels.

On Modelling Big Data Guided Supply Chains in Knowledge-Base Geographic Information Systems

We examine the existing goals of business- and geographic - information systems and their influence on logistics and supply chain management systems. Modelling supply chain management systems is held back because of lack of consistent and poorly aligned data with supply chain elements and processes. The issues constraining the decision-making process limit the connectivity between supply chains and geographically controlled database systems. The heterogeneous and unstructured data are added challenges to connectivity and integration processes. The research focus is on analysing the data heterogeneity and multidimensionality relevant to supply chain systems and geographically controlled databases. In pursuance of the challenges, a unified methodological framework is designed with data structuring, data warehousing and mining, visualization and interpretation artefacts to support connectivity and integration process. Multidimensional ontologies, ecosystem conceptualization and Big Data novelty are added motivations, facilitating the relationships between events of supply chain operations. The models construed for optimizing the resources are analysed in terms of effectiveness of the integrated framework articulations in global supply chains that obey laws of geography. The integrated articulations analysed with laws of geography can affect the operational costs, sure for better with reduced lead times and enhanced stock management.

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is used for multiple purposes in many fields and it is attracting attention, both academically and managerially, in the context of a customer-centric approach to supply chain management. The purpose of this paper is to explore how 3DP enables supply chain customer-centricity through value co-creation by the analysis of a case study, the manufacture of an innovative 3D printed component in the aerospace sector. The research highlights that: 1) the usage of 3DP enables the adoption of an external customer-centric supply chain orientation drawing on four sources of value co-creation; 2) value co-creation network based on 3DP requires a particular form of collaboration and coordination, bringing specific benefits for all the partners involved. A conceptual framework, leading to propositions, is developed identifying the elements of a customer-centric supply chain based on the principles of co-creation. Finally, theoretical and managerial implications and future research directions are outlined.

Effect of mandatory adoption of international financial reporting standard (IFRS) on supply chain management: A case of Indonesian dairy industry

A B S T R A C T The purpose of this study was to examine the role of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in supply chain management. To achieve this purpose, quantitative research approach was used, and the study preferred cross-sectional research design rather than longitudinal research design. Based on literature, six hypotheses were proposed concerning the relationship between international financial reporting and supply chain management. Data were collected from the employees of the dairy companies in Indonesia through area cluster sampling technique. Only those employees were selected having direct relationship with supply chain and accounting activities. Structural equation modelling was sued to test the hypotheses. The results of the study reveal that international financial reporting had significant association with supply chain management. The elements of supply chain accounting quality, namely; value relevance, earnings management and timely loss recognition had significant positive relationship with supply chain management. A better implementation of international financial reporting is the key to enhance the supply chain management. Information security aspects of Industry 4.0

Abstract Today’s most advanced Industrial systems are built on a very solid information technology basis. To serve and to operate the extremely complex supply chain, the industry needs modern, interconnected infrastructure, where sensors, industrial and office devices are connected. Therefore, real-time demands could take immediate action in every step of the supply chain elements. The more complex the information infrastructure is, the more risk emerges in the field of cybersecurity. Cybersecurity threats are hands-on risks in the industrial sector. SCADA systems were just the first step to influence the operation of a factory, and that time governments have the privilege of this action (with enough financial and IT resources). Today, the game has changed, new players and methodologies have emerged, and revealing the correlation between motivation and capability (in the aspects of the industrial sector) is the key not just the continuous development but to survive either.

A PROBLEM-BASED APPROACH OF COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE WITHIN SHORT FOOD SUPPLY CHAINS BASED ON A WESTERN TRANSDANUBIAN SURVEY

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in community supported agriculture, as part of the field of short food supply chains. A considerable amount of literature has been published on SFSCs which mainly deal with the benefits and detriments of these kinds of cooperations. Being regarded as the focal point of this current scrutiny, the study has been created to determine major problems existing on both ends of the food chain spectrum with close connection to the community supported agriculture on producer, consumer and partly on intermediary levels. These problem/target groups were created after an analysis of SFSCs by involvement of several farmer’s organization and consumers in the Western Transdanubia region. As result of the survey the most influential factor was determined, namely the insufficient nature of the market power of CSA organizations. Therefore, the solution of the basic problem could be a long-term, strategic objective that is the enhancement of the market power of community supported agriculture as vital element of short food supply chains.

An extended robust approach for a cooperative inventory routing problem

The impact of the horizontal collaboration of logistic providers as upstream supply chain elements is studied in this paper. The logistic providers can be considered as different players and, in order to analyze different types of coalitions by computing the synergy between the players in each cooperative structure, we developed a mixed integer programming (MIP) formulation for a cooperative inventory routing problem (Co-IRP). In this paper, each player has one depot and some retailers, which are considered as its available market. The model will have a many-to-many network structure once a coalition is formed, where a single product from different depots will be delivered to different retailers. We establish a robust version of Co-IRP, which is called Co-RIRP, considering uncertainty in the network. We developed a few metaheuristic algorithms to promote the gained results once MIP is solved. Finally, in order to share the possible cost saving between players and compare the assignments, we applied a few payoff distribution methods. In addition, a comprehensive analysis of example results and some important managerial insights are presented.
