Effects of Organic Fertilizer and Biochar on Carbon Release and Microbial Communities in Saline–Alkaline Soil

Climate change and aridification have increased the risk of salinization and organic carbon loss in dryland soils. Enrichment using biochar and organic fertilizers has the potential to reduce salt toxicity and soil carbon loss. However, the effects of biochar and organic fertilizers on CO2 and CH4 emissions from saline soils in dryland areas, as well as their microbial mechanisms, remain unelucidated. To clarify these issues, we performed a 5-month incubation experiment on typical soda-type saline soil from the western part of the Songnen Plain using five treatments: control treatment (CK), 5% urea (U), straw + 5% urea (SU), straw + 5% urea + microbial agent (SUH), and straw + 5% urea + biochar (SUB). Compared with the SU treatment, the SUH and SUB treatments reduced cumulative CO2 emissions by 14.85% and 35.19%, respectively. The addition of a microbiological agent to the SU treatment reduced the cumulative CH4 emissions by 19.55%, whereas the addition of biochar to the SU treatment increased the cumulative CH4 emissions by 4.12%. These additions also increased the relative abundances of Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes, and Ascomycota. Overall, the addition of biochar and organic fertilizer promoted CO2 emissions and CH4 uptake. This was mainly attributed to an improved soil gas diffusion rate due to the addition of organic materials and enhanced microbial stress due to soil salinity and alkalinity from the release of alkaline substances under closed-culture conditions. Our findings have positive implications for enhancing carbon storage in saline soils in arid regions.

Nutrient Allocation and Growth Responses of Senegalia polyphylla under Varied Fertilizer Regimes for Effective Forest Recovery.

To restore invaded areas, planting fast-growing native species such as Senegalia polyphylla (DC.) Britton & Rose (Fabaceae) is widely used. However, invasive grasses reduce light availability, alter fire regimes, and compete for water and nutrients, hindering the growth of native trees. Fertilization practices influence the competition dynamics between natives and invasives by altering soil fertility. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of mineral and organic fertilization on the nutritional status and growth of S. polyphylla cultivated during the first 120 days after transplanting. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design comprising five treatments and four replications, along with the unfertilized control (0-0%) as an additional treatment. Dystrophic red latosol and different proportions of mineral and organic fertilizers were used. The variables evaluated included dry mass of aboveground parts and roots, nutrient content in leaves, and nutrient use efficiency. The results showed that fertilizations with high nutrient concentrations (100-0% and 75-25%) resulted in greater accumulation of N, P, and K in the leaves, while balanced fertilization (50-50% and 25-75%) led to greater root dry mass. These results emphasize the importance of strategically choosing fertilizer formulations to promote the healthy development of seedlings in areas subject to interference from invasive grasses.

Response of N uptake, N-total and yield of sweet corn (Zea mays saccharata Sturt) due to fertilization with granulated solid organic fertilizer and NPK in Inceptisol soil

Sweet corn productivity is greatly influenced by proper cultivation techniques, of which fertilization is one of the main factors. Effective fertilization not only supports plant growth but also affects nutrient uptake and yield. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of granulated solid organic fertilizer and NPK fertilizer on nitrogen (N) uptake, soil N-total content, and sweet corn yield in Inceptisol soil. The research was conducted from February to June 2024 at the Experimental Field, Faculty of Agriculture, Padjadjaran University with treatments including control, NPK fertilizer, and various combinations of granular organic fertilizer and NPK. The results showed that the combination of granule organic fertilizer and NPK significantly increased nitrogen uptake and N-total content in the soil compared to the single NPK application. In addition, sweet corn yield, as measured by cob weight per plant, per plot, and per hectare, also increased significantly with the fertilizer combination treatment. This study supports the use of fertilization strategies that integrate organic and inorganic fertilizers as an effective way to increase sweet corn productivity on soils with limited fertility, such as Inceptisol. The application of a combination of 1 NPK + 1 granulated organic fertilizer was the best combination in increasing N uptake, N-total and sweet corn yield.

Combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers sustained rice yields and N accumulation and decreased soil-canopy system NH3 emission

Excessive inorganic fertilization created various environmental problems, and the combination of organic and inorganic fertilization not only maintains crop production but is also environmentally sustainable. A pot experiment was conducted in Yangzhou, China, to investigate the comprehensive effects of organic fertilization combined with inorganic fertilization on the yield and yield components, nitrogen (N) uptake of different organs, and soil-plant system ammonia (NH3) emissions of two rice cultivars, taking into account the interception of soil NH3 emissions by the rice canopy. The treatments included the conventional practice of inorganic N applied by local farmers (INO, 270 kg N ha−1), 30 % reduced INO (70 %-INO, 189 kg N ha−1), and organic fertilizer combined with 70 %-INO (ORG-INO). Compared to 70 %-INO, ORG-INO significantly increased grain yield by 38 %, mainly due to more panicles. Similarly, ORG-INO also significantly promoted N uptake in the two rice cultivars, especially in terms of grain N accumulation, relative to 70 %-INO. The increase in grain N accumulation caused by ORG-INO was mainly due to enhanced post-anthesis N uptake, rather than N remobilization of vegetative organs, which also suggested that organic fertilizer could modify the processes of N retention and release. There was no significant difference in rice yield and N accumulation between INO and ORG-INO treatments, which also indicated that ORG-INO was effective in maintaining grain yield while reducing inorganic fertilizer input. Moreover, ORG-INO significantly reduced soil-plant system NH3 emissions, while the rice canopy intercepted approximately 30 % of soil NH3 emissions throughout the entire growing season. In summary, ORG-INO treatment significantly reduced the yield-scaled NH3 emissions, and the partial substitution of organic fertilizers for inorganic fertilizers should be recommended to promote environmental sustainability while ensuring food security.

Effect of Organic and Chemical Fertilizer on the Diversity of Rhizosphere and Leaf Microbial Composition in Sunflower Plant.

Applying organic manure to crops positively impacts the soil microbial community which is negatively impacted when chemical fertilizers are used. Organic manures also add new microbes to the soil in addition to influencing the growth of native ones. Metagenomic analysis of different organic manures, soil, and pot culture experiments conducted under various fertilizer conditions constitute the primary methodologies employed in this study. We compared the effect of two organic manure combinations and an inorganic fertilizer combination on microbial community of rhizosphere soil and leaves of sunflower plants. Metagenomic sequencing data analysis revealed that the diversity of bacteria and fungi is higher in organic manure than in chemical fertilizers. Each organic manure combination selectively increased population of some specific microbes and supported new microbes. Application of chemical fertilizer hurts many plant beneficial fungi and bacteria. In summary, our study points out the superiority of organic manure combinations in enhancing microbial diversity and supporting beneficial microbes. These findings enhance the profound influence of fertilizer types on sunflower microbial communities, shedding light on the intricate dynamics within the rhizosphere and leaf microbiome. Bacterial genera such as Bacillus, Serratia, Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, Methylobacterium, Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, and fungal genera such as Wallemia, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Penicillium constitute the key microbes of sunflower plants.

Effect of Biochar Amendment and Organic Fertilization on the Yield and Nutritional Quality of Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L.)

Organic fertilization is gaining importance as an alternative to chemical fertilization. However, the effects of organic products on crop quality need to be characterized, especially in biochar and derived products. Therefore, the effect of enriched biochar supplied with an organic fertilizer (biochar) on the yield and nutritional compounds of artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. Scolymus) heads was analyzed and compared to inorganic conventional fertilization (control). For this purpose, the number of fruits and their weights were determined, along with the nutritional properties of artichoke heads, such as mineral content, fatty acids, phenolic compounds, and flavonoids. The results showed that biochar increased crop yield, as registered by the higher number of marketable or commercial artichokes compared to the control. Additionally, biochar-treated plants exhibited significantly higher contents of Ca, Mg, and S in the artichoke heads, but they had a decreased content of Co, Cu, and Zn. The fatty acid content in the biochar-treated artichokes was also significantly higher, primarily due to the presence of palmitic acid. Conversely, the contents of phenolic compounds (e.g., flavonoids) were negatively and significantly affected by the application of biochar. In conclusion, the application of biochar as a soil amendment in combination with organic matter for growing artichokes in the semiarid Mediterranean area (e.g., Murcia Region) favored an increase in yield without compromising its nutritional composition. Further developments to establish protocols for the extended use of biochar in this agri-food production area are guaranteed.

Effect of Organic and Industrial Fertilizers on Reducing Sugar, Specific Gravity, Dry Matter and Starch Composition of Fresh Harvested Irish Potato Varieties in Musanze District Rwanda

Potatoes for use in industrial processing must have a low reducing sugar concentration. This study investigates the impact of organic and synthetic fertilizers on the composition of Irish potato cultivars’ reducing sugar, specific gravity, dry matter, and starch. The research was conducted at Busogo Farm in Rwanda, using randomized complete block designs in seasons 2021 B and 2022 A with rate of ten tones per hectare under the doses of 100%, 50%, and 0% and three hundred kilograms per hector under the dose of 100%, 50% and 0% respectively for farmyard manure and NPK 17.17.17. Results showed significant effects of season and treatment on reducing sugar levels in potatoes. Twihaze and Kirundo varieties recorded high glucose (0.09%), while Gisubizo variety in control, recorded low glucose (0.01%). Additionally, the analysis of variance showed that Irish potato varieties with low to moderate and moderate to high glucose contents, respectively, experienced extremely significant (p 0.001) effects of farmyard manure and NPK on glucose content for the seasons 2021 B and 2022 A. The application of inorganic and organic fertilizers had a significant impact (p 0.05) on dry matter in seasons B and A, according to the analysis of variance. Additionally, the results demonstrated extremely significant (p<0.01) differences in specific gravity and starch in both seasons, with Kinigi variety having higher values of dry matter, specific gravity, and starch content in season B and A, respectively, of 24.58, 1.10, and 18.59%. Season 2022 A’s high decreasing sugar levels were caused by meteorological conditions brought on by the soil’s high moisture content as well as the maturity of the tubers. Due to its low level of reducing sugar, Gikungu, Kirundo, and Kinigi are excellent for chips whereas Twihaze variety is advised for boiling cooking methods.

Effects of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers on Soil Properties of Lowland Rice on Vertisols of Fogera District, Northwestern Ethiopia

Declining land productivity due to low soil fertility status as a result of continuous cultivation, inadequate use of organic and inorganic fertilizers is a major cause for decline crop productivity. Hence, a field experiment was conducted at Fogera National Rice Research and Training Center (FNRRTC) during the 2021 cropping season to determine the effects of integrated use of farmyard manure (FYM) and nitrogen fertilizer on soil properties and yield of lowland rice on the vertisols of Fogera district. The treatments were factorial combination of three levels of FYM (0, 5, and 7.5 t ha<sup>-1</sup>) and four levels of Nitrogen (0, 46, 92, and 184 kg ha<sup>-1</sup>). The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Representative soil samples were collected at a depth of 0-20 cm before treatment application and after crop harvest, and analyzed following the standard laboratory procedures. All collected soil data were analyzed by using SAS software (version 9.4). After crop harvest the results showed that soil pH, OC, TN, CEC, Exc. K, Ca, Mg and Av.P were significantly (p<0.01) affected by the main effects of FYM. The combined applications of FYM and N fertilizer also significantly (p<0.01) affected CEC, OC and Exc.Mg. The highest soil CEC, OC and Exc.Mg were recorded from the combine effects of 7.5 t/kg with 92 kg/ha. From the results of this experiment, it could be concluded that combined application of FYM and inorganic N fertilizers improved the chemical and physical properties, which may lead to enhanced and sustainable production of rice in the study area.

Effects of liquid organic fertilizer on growth and volatile components of Arugula under salinity

The effects of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) made from anaerobic digestion on some physiological factors and volatile components of arugula plants that were grown in salty conditions were investigated. The experiment was conducted in three different stages. In the first two stages, seeds were grown in petri dishes and pots for seven days. The third stage involved growing seedlings in pots for 60 days. Salinity inhibited the germination of 7-day arugula seedlings in petri dishes and their emergence in pots. In these stages, LOF pretreatment failed to eliminate stress-induced inhibition. Some physiological parameters were analyzed in 60-day seedlings in the third stage. Salt-induced inhibition showed significant negative effects on all parameters. In contrast to previous stages, LOF (1% and 5%) and NPK had positive effects in all groups at the third stage, eliminating salt stress in all parameters except water content. Contrary to expectations, volatile components showed no significant change but had fluctuating values due to salt stress or fertilizer treatments.

Effectiveness of Organic Fertilizers in Improving Soil Fertility, Productivity and Quality of Carrots (Daucus carota) in Southern Côte d'Ivoire

In the context of agricultural resilience to climate change, a strategy of replacing chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizers has been adopted to improve the production of vegetable crops, particularly carrots. This study promotes organic carrot farming in Côte d'Ivoire by applying an organic biofertiliser based on poultry droppings and traditional medicinal plants to the soil. Different doses of this organic biofertiliser, applied to the soil by fertigation (dilution at 0.5% (T1), 5% (T2) and 10% (T3)), were tested under a crop of carrots (Daucus carota) in a completely randomized Fisher block design with 4 replications. The results show that yields varied significantly according to the different doses applied (p<0.05). High carrot yields of 27.5±1.29 t.ha-1 were obtained with treatment T2. However, plant growth indicators (plant height, number of leaves, root length and diameter) were similar for the three treatments T1, T2 and T3. According to the results obtained, treatment T2 would be suitable for achieving and maintaining an acceptable level of fertility and ensuring satisfactory yields for the carrot crop. Thus, the use of this biofertilizer should be encouraged for agro-ecological soil fertility management, and may be an alternative to synthetic fertilizers which, due to their high cost, are not accessible to growers.

The purpose of the research is to evaluate the effect of organic and mineral fertilizers and their combination on the yield and quality indicators of potato tubers during irrigation on chernozem soils of the Republic of Tatarstan. The research was carried out in 2021-2022 in Kama zone on leached chernozem of medium loamy granulometric composition. The medium-early variety of Gala potatoes served as the material for research. The experiment was performed to study the effect of organic and mineral fertilizers and their combination by creating the following nutrition backgrounds: mineral fertilizers with a rate of application of N60P60K90 d.v. kg/ha (general background); organic fertilizer (manure 60 t/ha); general background + manure 60 t/ha; general background + organic fertilizer (siderate); general background + siderate + straw; general background + organic matter (manure 60 t/ha) + straw; organic fertilizer (manure 60 t/ha + siderate + straw); natural background (control). The weather conditions in both years of research were both satisfactorily favorable for the growth and development of potatoes. In the budding and tuber formation phase, artificial sprinkling was carried out at the rate of 300 m3 of water per 1 ha, thereby the potato agrocenosis was fully provided with productive moisture. On average, over two years, the highest yield was achieved in variant 7 (background + manure + straw), and it amounted to 38.8 t/ha, which is 20.6 t/ha more than in the control, in other experimental variants this difference ranged from 10.46-18.8 t/ha. The dry matter content in tubers during the application of various types of fertilizers was lower by 0.49...1.49% than in the control, starch – by 0.25...0.79%. On average, over 2 years, the highest protein and vitamin C content was in variant 6 – 2.95% and 21,24 mg%, respectively, which is higher than the control by 0.37% and 3.03 mg%.

Sustainable potato farming in Shandong Province, China: a comprehensive analysis of organic fertilizer applications

IntroductionThe potato holds the distinction of being the world’s largest non-cereal food crop and ensuring its sustainable production is imperative for global food security. Notably, China leads in both the planting area and output of potatoes globally, cementing its crucial role in the nation’s agricultural economy. A scientific assessment of the effectiveness of organic fertilizers on potato cultivation can significantly contribute to the promotion of sustainable agriculture.MethodsThis study utilizes a Propensity Score Matching (PSM) model and introduces a novel cost-efficiency approach to analyze and evaluate the production efficiency and economic impact of organic fertilizer application among 546 potato growers in Shandong.ResultsThe research findings reveal the following: Firstly, compared to the control group without organic fertilizer application, it is evident that the use of organic fertilizers enhances production technology efficiency, labor productivity, land productivity, and net profit per unit by 3.6%, 1588.47 kg/person, 16346.77 kg/ha, and 16135.32 yuan/ha, respectively. Secondly, an examination of cost efficiency among growers with different production scales indicates that those with a planting scale of 0.667-1.333 hectares demonstrate relatively high production efficiency across multiple factors. Additionally, there is an observable inverted U-shaped trend in the relationship between planting scale and production efficiency. Thirdly, the continuous application of organic fertilizers proves advantageous in mitigating inefficiencies in investment techniques, leading to cost savings and efficiency improvements in potato cultivation.DiscussionConsequently, it is recommended that the government and relevant departments enhance technical support, elevate professional training programs, and optimize the allocation of input factors. These measures aim to encourage farmers to adopt organic fertilizers, thereby promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

A novel eco-friendly approach of combining vermicompost and effective microorganisms sustains wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) drought tolerance by modulating photosynthetic performance and nutrient acquisition

The most significant threat to global food security is water scarcity. Despite the fact that vermicompost (an effective organic fertilizer rich in humic substances, macro- and micro-nutrients, earthworm excretions, beneficial soil microbes, plant growth hormones, enzymes) and effective microorganisms (EM; photosynthetic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, actinomycetes, fermenting fungi) have been recognized as powerful strategies for alleviating environmental stresses, their combined effect has not been studied. Herein, as a first investigation, we aimed to enhance wheat’s drought tolerance using an eco-friendly approach that combined vermicompost and EM. The study employed twelve treatments in a completely randomized design. The treatments included control, as well as single and combined applications of vermicompost and EM at three different irrigation levels (100%, 70%, and 30% of field capacity). Vermicompost and EM, applied singly or in combination, ameliorated drought-induced reduction in wheat growth and productivity by elevating photosynthetic pigment content, photochemical processes, Calvin cycle enzyme activity, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry, actual photochemical efficiency of PSII, electron transport rate, photochemical quenching coefficient, and effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry. Additionally, adding vermicompost and/or EM improved wheat drought tolerance by increasing nutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, iron, zinc, copper) acquisition, roots’ ATP content, H+-pump activity, and membrane stability index while lowering hydrogen peroxide content, lipid peroxidation, and electrolyte leakage. The new evidence demonstrates that combining vermicompost with EM sustains wheat drought tolerance by regulating photosynthetic efficiency, nutrient acquisition, root H+-pump activity, and membrane stability. Overall, utilizing vermicompost/EM is a novel approach to improving plant physiological responses and overcoming drought-related challenges.

THE EFFECT OF ORGANIC FERTILIZER AND NITROPOSKA ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF PEANUT ON ULTISOL SOIL

The aim of the research was to study the effect of organic fertilizer and Nitrophoska on the growth and yield of peanuts on ultisol soils. The study was conducted in the Labibia sub district, Kendari city, from January to April 2023. The study was arranged in a randomized block design (RAK) in a factorial pattern with three replications consisting of 2 factors. The first factor was organic fertilizer which consisted of 4 levels, namely: control (B0), 5 t ha-1 (B1), 10 t ha-1 (B2), and 15 t ha-1 (B3). The second factor was Nitrophoska fertilizer which consisted of 3 levels, namely control (P0), 75 kg ha-1 (P1), and 150 kg ha-1 (P2) so that there were 4x3x3=36 experimental units. Observation variables included: plant height, leaf area, weight of 100 seeds, yield per plot and yield per ha. The results showed that there was an interaction between organic fertilizer and Nitrophoska on the observed variables. The best results were obtained in the treatment of 15 t ha-1 of organic fertilizer and 150 kg ha-1 of Nitrophoska fertilizer with the highest production reaching 0.93 t ha-1.

Combinatory effects of pineapple peel liquid organic fertilizer and rice husk charcoal on melon (Cucumis melo L.) growth and yield

The intensive use of synthetic fertilizers in melon cultivation can reduce soil organic matter and fertility, ultimately decreasing productivity. This situation necessitates the improvement of growing media to achieve production targets through the use of rice husk charcoal and liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) from pineapple peel. This study aims to determine the combinatory effects of pineapple peel LOF and rice husk charcoal media on the growth and yield of melon plants. The research employed a factorial randomized block design (RBD) with 6 treatment levels, and data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by an HSD test at the 5% significance level. The results showed an interaction between pineapple peel POC and rice husk charcoal media on the number of leaves variable. The P0M1 treatment (NPK 16:16:16 at 3 g and 50% rice husk charcoal & 50% soil) at 52 days after planting (DAP) produced the highest number of leaves, totaling 26.12. However, this increase in leaf number was not accompanied by an increase in fruit weight or brix levels. These findings open opportunities for further research to understand why the increase in leaf number did not translate to higher fruit weight or Brix levels, and to identify treatment combinations that can enhance both growth and yield.

Effect of Organic NPK Granules and Inorganic Fertilizers on Growth, Yield and Economics of Rice

Modern intensive agriculture, which sparked the "Green Revolution" in the early 1970s, degraded the environment, which decreased productivity and had other negative impacts on the environment and public health. In order to improve the health of the agricultural environment, organic farming, which primarily forgoes the use of chemicals in agriculture, depends on a comprehensive production and management system. The multitude of microorganisms in the soil under this holistic management method ensures that the soil is alive, active, and productive by keeping it biologically active. It is a reality that plants can and do absorb huge amounts of big organic molecules, such as vitamins, chelated minerals, hormones, and other substances that are advantageous to them, refuting the claim that plants only ever take up nutrients in inorganic form. To investigate further, a field experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm, Department of Agronomy, Annamalai University, Annamalai Nagar, Cuddalore District of Tamil Nadu from June to September 2023 to study the effect of combined application of graded levels of inorganic fertilizers along with organic NPK granules on growth, yield and economics of rice. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with seven treatments, comprised of different levels of inorganic fertilizers and organic NPK granules. Among the treatments evaluated, application of 70% NPK through inorganic fertilizers and 30% NPK through organic NPK granules registered higher growth, yield attributes and yield of rice. However the net income and benefit cost ratio was observed under application of 100% NPK through inorganic fertilizers which was comparable with application of 70% NPK through inorganic fertilizers and 30% NPK through organic granules. Therefore it can be concluded that combined application of 70% NPK through inorganic fertilizers and 30% NPK through organic granules is an environmental safe and economically viable nutrient management practice for getting higher yield and income from rice and it can be recommended to the rice growers.
