Are quality management practices enough to improve process innovation?

The popularity of quality management as a system for continuous improvement has not been accompanied by deep theoretical understanding of its effects on process innovation. In this work, the resource-based view serves as the basis for the construction of a model designed to explain the effects of quality management practices (QMP) on process innovation performance and the mediating role of dynamic capabilities in this relationship. The empirical data were analysed using the structural equation modelling technique by examining 6 competing models that represent full, partial mediation and non-mediation relationships on a sample of 550 Spanish industrial companies. The findings indicate that the implementation level of QMP is not directly related to process innovation performance, but learning and technological capabilities fully mediate this relationship. Therefore, QMP needs to enhance and develop dynamic capabilities to effectively achieve the improvement and transformation of a firm’s processes.

An investigation into the effect of quality management practices on the process of knowledge production in industry, mine and trade organization of Ardabil

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of quality management practices on the knowledge production process in industry, mine and trade organization of Ardabil. Considering the purpose of the study, the present research was an applied research and in terms of method, it was a descriptive and correlational one. The population of the study consisted of all employees in industry, mine and trade organization of Ardabil which included 197 individuals. Cochran’s formula is used to determine the sample size and according to this formula, the number of obtained samples was 125. Simple random sampling used for the sampling of this group. Two questionnaires were used to collect data. For assessing the process of knowledge management, knowledge management questionnaire and for measuring the quality management practices, the standard questionnaire of Saraph, Benson, and Shroeder, (1989) came into use. For data analysis, S statistical software was applied and univariate regression analysis was used to analyze the hypotheses. The results showed that quality management practices had significant positive impact on the process of knowledge production. Also, support components of senior management, quantitative report, employee training, employee participation, product design, quality of supplier, process management, and the role of quality management all had significant positive effect on the process of knowledge production.

Effects of contextual variables on quality and performance

The aim of this paper is to examine the moderating effects of three contextual variables (ISO 9000 registration, company size and scope of operations) on levels of quality management (QM) and on the effects of QM practices on performance. The paper uses data from 255 Malaysian electrical and electronics organisations using t-test, analysis of variance and hierarchical regressions as statistical tools. The results show that ISO-registered firms, larger firms and multinational firms have higher levels of QM. In addition, QM is more strongly and positively related to performance in larger, multinational firms and firms with quality certification.

THE INFLUENCE OF IMPLEMENTING QUALITY MANAGEMENT TOWARDS PURCHASING PERFORMANCE AND COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE MAKING

This study examined the effect of quality management practices on purchasing performance and competitive advantage. The data were collected through questionnaires consisting of 152 manufacturing companies in West Java, by using purposive sampling method. The hypotheses were tested by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM.) The results indicate that quality management practices in purchasing had significant influence on purchasing performance, while quality performance had also significant influance on competitive advantage. Another finding was that quality management practices in purchasing had significant influence on the quality performance mediated by purchasing performance. The Focus of Quality Management Practices: A National Culture Perspective

The effectiveness of quality management practices under different national culture environments is investigatedin this study. We bundle quality management practices by two orientations based on learning theoryand theninvestigate if any type of quality management practices shows stronger relationship with performance withindifferent national culture environments. The hypotheses were tested using a survey dataset witha sample size of238 which were collected from eight countries. Data analysis results show that exploitative quality practices arehighly related to performance outcome in national cultures featured by high power distance and high uncertaintyavoidance. In contrast, exploratory quality practices are significantly associated with operations performance innations with low power distance and low uncertainty avoidance. The study suggests that quality managementpractices be adopted selectively based on the national culture profile. It advances our understanding of qualitymanagement practices from the context dependent perspective and provides guidelines for practitionersonimplementing quality practices successfully in different cultural environments.

Analyzing the effectiveness of quality management practices in China

Abstract This study examines the effectiveness of different quality management practices in firms operating in China. Following March's framework, quality management practices are organized by two orientations—exploration vs. exploitation. We investigate whether exploitative-oriented quality practices are more effective than exploratory-oriented quality practices or vice versa in China. Data were collected from quality managers of companies located in seven areas in China. Structural equation models were used to assess the effectiveness of explorative quality practices and exploitative quality practices on multiple performance dimensions. Overall, exploratory-oriented practices contribute more towards most of performance goals than exploitative-oriented practices. We further explain the research findings from the national culture perspective in the sense that the current Chinese national culture profile is dramatically different from the traditional wisdom, particularly in power distance. The results provide an insightful guideline for quality managers to allocate scarce resources to make quality practices more effective in operations sites in China. It offers a new focus of launching quality management practices in a specific cultural environment.

The Effect of Quality Management Practices on Organizational Performance in Jordan: An Empirical Study

Quality management practices (QMPs) have been proposed to improve organizational performance and received substantial attention in recent researches. This study empirically examines the extent to which QMPs and Organizational performance are correlated and how QMPs impacts on organizational performance. In this study, a QMPs framework is developed according to a comprehensive literature review and represents a relationship between QMPs and Organizational performance through examining the effects of the six QMPs constructs on Organizational performance. Questionnaire using for collected data from the banking sector in Jordan and tested proposed model. The results of this study supported a model proposed.

The effects of quality management practices on employees' well-being

Recently, there has been an explosion of published work in quality management (QM) journals on issues associated with QM practices. However, many of these works have focused on different relationships between QM practices and business performance and have not addressed the effects of QM practices on employees. This research was aimed at exploring the relationship between the application of QM practices and employees' well-being. We proposed that QM practices alter workplace characteristics, affect employees, and improve work-related attitudes and work life outcomes. We tested our hypotheses with a questionnaire using a sample of 344 participants from 27 business organisations. Regarding validity, all questions in the questionnaire were constructed after a thorough literature review. Subsequently, before the questionnaire was mailed to participants, scholars and Taiwanese human resources experts discussed and evaluated the questions. We conducted a hierarchical regression analysis with indicators of employees' well-being as the dependent variables. Our findings supported the hypothesised model, which suggested that QM practices not only increase employees' belongingness and job satisfaction, but also decrease their work overload and work stress. The implications for managers and researchers, as well as research limitations, are also discussed.

Improving operational and business performance in the petroleum industry through quality management

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate empirically the effects of quality management practices on operational and business performance.Design/methodology/approachA reliable and valid survey instrument was used for data gathering from managers in the petroleum industry. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine the effect of quality management practices on operational and business performance.FindingsThe results indicate that top management support, employee training, and employee involvement are significant variables explaining the variability of operational performance. Furthermore, a multiple regression analysis on business performance indicated the significance of top management support on business performance. The study also shows that customer orientation is not a significant predictor of business performance in the petroleum industry. In addition, focus on practices associated with human resource management (employee training and employee involvement) is critical in improving operational performance.Research limitations/implicationsManagers in the oil and gas industry need to emphasize practices associated with human resource management. Future studies should replicate this study with a larger sample size.Originality/valueThe study contributes to theory validation and development in quality management by investigating the effects of quality management practices on operational and business performance. The paper adds to the body of knowledge in quality management in the international context, specifically in the Middle East. In addition, it advances the literature on the practice of quality management in process industries, such as the petroleum industry.

Work unit incivility, job satisfaction, and total quality management among transportation employees

Survey results from 1381 employees working in a state department of transportation tested the idea that uncivil work environments bear undesirable consequences for job satisfaction and diminish the effectiveness of quality management practices. Results demonstrated that incivility does not have to be personally experienced to have deleterious effects, merely witnessed. Perceived workplace incivility was found to adversely affect job satisfaction and the effectiveness of quality programs aimed at teamwork, customer focus and continuous improvement, even after controlling for race, gender and prior experience of harassment. Managers are advised to broaden their consideration of incivility to include its effects on observers.

Effects of Quality Management Practices and Concurrent Engineering in Business Performance

The main focus of this paper is to indicate the effect of quality management practices and concurrent engineeringon business performance improvement. The research has been done by taking one of Brewery Company (MetaAbo Brewery S. Co) as a case study. Practical secondary data have been collected and analyzed to understandwhat it seems the actual company’s business results growth rate in terms of annual sales, profit before incometax, production volume and costs of production. These results are compared to the ideal continuous improvementorganization business results. Primary data are also analyzed to test quality practice levels of the company. Theresults of these discussions approve that there exists a direct relationship between TQM & CE, and company’sbusiness performance improvement. Finally, proposed business improvement model and modified TQM & CEimplementation models are presented.

The effects of quality management practices on customer satisfaction and innovation: a perspective from Jordan

This research examines the structural relationships between nine quality management practices and investigates the impact of these practices on customer satisfaction (CS) and innovation for 130 ISO 9001 certified firms in Jordan. The main results include: (1) CS is directly and positively related to customer focus, continuous improvement and human resource (HR) management, while innovation is directly and positively affected by leadership and HR management; (2) leadership has an indirect positive impact on CS, while it positively affects CS; (3) process management (PM) is positively related to supplier management (SM), quality tools and techniques (QTTs) and HR management, while it has an indirect and positive effect on CS; (4) HR management is positively related to leadership and it has a direct positive impact on CS, innovation, PM and QTTs and (5) finally, SM has a direct positive effect on PM. In conclusion, the awareness of Jordanian firms of these relationships may guide them to improve their internal performance as well as strengthen their external competition.

Exploring the Impact of Quality Management Practices on Product Quality from the Perspective of Learning

. The effects of quality management practices on product quality have been investigated extensively, but most of past studies conducted from empirical level, and the mechanism of how quality management practices lead to improvement of product quality is still unclear. Thus, this paper develops a conceptual framework for exploring the mechanism of how quality management practices result in enhancement of product quality from the perspective of explorative and exploitative learning.

Employees' perspective on the effectiveness of ISO 9000 certification: A Total Quality Management framework

ISO 9000 has been widely adopted as a quality management system for improving competitiveness around the world, but with mixed success. As most competitors in the industries that require ISO registration are already registered, companies are now looking for tangible internal benefits from the standards. This study utilises a survey instrument directly tied to MBNQA criteria, frequently used to represent the various views of the constructs associated with TQM, to examine the effectiveness of ISO 9000 implementations towards Total Quality Management practices and operational performance from employees' perspective. Two observations are concluded: (1) ISO certifications significantly improve the effectiveness of quality management practices. Small divisions claim more improvement than large ones. Service experienced better improvement than manufacturing in five out of six areas investigated. Experienced divisions enjoy more improvement than novice ones. (2) ISO certification does bring significant benefits to improve the level of quality performance. While the effect of size is mixed, neither the years of registration nor the nature of operations has an effect on quality performance.

Development of Total Quality Management in Kaunas University of Technology

We reflect on the activities of Department of QualityManagement, Faculty of Economics and Management,Kaunas University of Technology in this article. The reasonswhich lead to the establishment of the Department ofQuality Management are briefly presented. Since 1997 themembers of the department research various problems ofquality management, co-ordinate programme for Master’sdegree (Quality Management specialization) and communicateits research to business and public organizations.These three activities of the Department research, teachingand communication of the results of research are reviewedin this article. First, the topics of the research conductedfrom the establishment of the Department could be generalizedunder these themes: Total quality management(TQM) as conceptual core, quality culture, quality andperformance measurement, stakeholders’ interests harmonization,processual approach, quality of life, wageadministration under TQM. Research under these topics isreviewed. A theoretical contribution and results are discussed.Second, the courses underlying Quality Managementspecialization are also analyzed. It is argued thatduring the decade more than a hundred of students becamequality managers. The content of the courses is discussed.Third, the ways of communication of quality managementmethods to business and public organizations is highlighted.The main means of communication of TQM are:the Lithuanian Association for Quality Management andthe Center for Total Quality Management. The article presentsthe discussion on possible and relevant research topics.Five possible directions was identified: to proceed onresearch, that has been already conducted, look for newapproaches to explain how quality is achieved, incorporateknowledge from other disciplines, reinterpret the mainconcepts of quality in the context of present changes, analyzethe effects of quality management practices.

A structural model of the impact of Quality Management Practices and purchasing-related Information Systems on purchasing performance: A TQM perspective

Many studies claim that the implementation of quality management practices and specific information systems can help organizations to improve performance. However, little is known about the effect of Quality Management Practices in Purchasing (QMPP) on related Information System practices (IS) and their combined effect on purchasing performance. The objective of this article is to advance the literature by providing an empirically evaluated and comprehensive model that relates QMPP with IS and purchasing performance. Measurement scales for these three constructs were developed and assessed for convergent validity, discriminant validity, and reliability. Findings from this study indicate that there is significant evidence to support the hypothesized model in which QMPP has a direct impact on related IS practices and purchasing performance; it also has an indirect impact on purchasing performance mediated through IS.1

Managerial leadership for total quality improvement in UK higher education

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to increase awareness of the critical role of “managerial leadership” in total quality management (TQM) implementation in UK higher education institutions (HEIs), and to encourage further research on how to sustain management and leadership best practices for total quality improvement in higher education.Design/methodology/approachA critical review of the literature on managerial leadership provides the theoretical scope which led to the setting of research objectives. The objectives were achieved through a survey of academics and non‐academics responsible for teaching and research quality improvement in a sample of 42 UK HEIs between the period 2000 and 2005. A mix of questionnaires, interviews, inductive analysis and hypothesis testing, was used to explore, describe and to explain the nature of the relationship between the degrees of efficiency and effectiveness of quality management practices in the participating UK HEIs.FindingsThe analysis of the survey results revealed “weak” associations between the degrees of efficiency and effectiveness in the quality management practices adopted by participating UK HEIs. It provides examples of weak quality management practices as empirical evidence of “weak” association between “management efficiency” and “leadership effectiveness” in UK HEIs.Research limitations/implicationsInternational generalization of findings requires the sample size to be increased to include more HEIs from the UK and other countries with similar educational systems. Further quantitative research is needed to provide in depth explanation of the nature of the functional relationship between the degrees of effectiveness and efficiency of quality management practices in higher educational settings.Practical implicationsUnderstanding the nature of the association between the degrees of effectiveness and efficiency of quality management practices would provide a conceptual framework which would enable academics and practitioners to reflect critically on the “efficiency” and “effectiveness” of teaching and research quality improvement decisions and actions to ensure successful implementation of TQM best practices.Originality/valueUses the degrees of efficiency and effectiveness as criteria for evaluating managerial leadership in UK higher education, and recommends strengthening of the association between the criteria through continuous improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of teaching and research quality improvement practices.

Comparing Quality Management Practices between the United States and Mexico

The purpose of this article is to compare quality management practices in the United States and Mexico. The survey instrument used was based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) criteria. The results show that social aspects of quality, including quality citizenship and quality responsibility, are different in the United States and Mexico. Furthermore, the results of the regression analysis show that there are differences between the critical success factors of quality management practices within the United States and Mexico. In both countries, general matters (social responsibility) and supplier quality were significant in explaining variability of quality results. More similarities in both countries were found in the effect of quality management practices on customer focus and satisfaction, where general matters (social responsibility), strategic planning process for quality management, and quality assurance of products or services were statistically significant variables explaining variability of customer focus and satisfaction. This research concludes that supplier quality, strategic planning process of quality management, and social aspects significantly affect quality success factors and customer satisfaction in both countries. Recommendations for implementing quality management in the United States and Mexico are provided.

The effects of quality management – a survey of Swedish quality professionals

PurposeIn this study, the effects of the different models and tools of quality management are examined. The purpose is to identify differences in the effects generated by different quality management models and tools.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire was mailed to 500 Swedish quality professionals. The questions concerned their companies' adoption of the values of TQM, the use of the models and tools of TQM and the effects they notice. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were carried out.FindingsThe findings show that there is statistical correlation between the adoption of the values of TQM and successful quality management. The usefulness of the Swedish Quality Award, the European Quality Award and ISO 9000 as well as several of the quality management tools is also indicated. Regarding ISO 9000 specific effects have been found.Research limitations/implicationsA limitation of the study is that the financial outcomes of the quality management practices are not measured but only the managers' perceptions of effects produced. The implication for further research is an increased knowledge of the different effects of the quality management practices and the significance of the values, particularly three values that were included in the multiple regression models.Practical implicationsThe specific findings on the effects of ISO 9000 are useful for managers when implementing the standard. The results of the study also indicate the importance of emphasising the values for successful quality management.Originality/valueThis study has provided more detailed knowledge of the effects of the different quality management practices, particularly of ISO 9000.

Influence of experience and collaboration on effectiveness of quality management practices

PurposeTo examine the impact of experience in terms of time period on TQM's effectiveness in improving performance of Indian manufacturing companies. To establish the impact of TPM support on TQM's effectiveness.Design/methodology/approachThis is an empirical research with testing of hypotheses using t tests. The data are collected with the help of a questionnaire on six performance parameters, which are measured on a five‐point scale. The study considers three time periods (phases) of implementation and two improvement strategies, i.e. TQM alone and TQM supported by TPM (combined strategy), for the purpose of analysis. The analysis is based on valid responses from 111 manufacturing companies.FindingsThe performance improvements contributed by TQM in the transition phase have been marginal due to initial investments and efforts required as well as to country‐specific factors. The effectiveness of TQM in the stability and maturity phases is established in an Indian context. The synergetic effect of TPM support on TQM's performance is also established in an Indian context.Practical implicationsThe paper establishes the long‐term effects of TQM on companies' performance in an Indian context. It also highlights various country‐specific factors, which led to marginal improvement during the transition phase. The paper also establishes that TQM with TPM support can be an effective strategy to improve competitiveness of Indian manufacturing companies.Originality/valueThis paper studies the two important factors which influence TQM's effectiveness. Although the study has been carried out in an Indian context, it is equally significant in a global scenario. This paper addresses a pertinent issue of simultaneous implementation of TQM and TPM, which is commonly found in industry but not adequately researched.
