Factors influencing the use of e-library resources by postgraduate engineering students at Kyambogo University in Uganda

The aim of this study was to investigate the factors influencing the use of e-library resources among postgraduate engineering students at Kyambogo University in Uganda to make suggestions on how to improve access to and use of e-library resources. The study adopted a survey research design to collect data from postgraduate engineering students. Following a census sampling strategy, data was obtained from 58 out of 80 registered postgraduate engineering students using online self-administered questionnaires. The findings revealed that the use of e-library resources by postgraduate engineering students was influenced by ease of use, convenience, level of awareness, and information search skills. However, access restrictions and high internet costs negatively affected e-library resources usage. It is the conclusion of the study that the use of e-library resources was largely influenced by personal factors. This study has implications on e-library resources collection development, policy development, and service delivery in academic libraries. The study bridges the knowledge gap in the use of e-library resources among postgraduate engineering students.

Problem-based learning with library e-resources to enhance student information literacy self-efficacy

PurposeThis study investigates the effectiveness of problem-based learning (PBL) in information literacy curricula using library e-resources to enhance information literacy self-efficacy (ILSE) of students in two universities in Indonesia, in Java Island (University A) and Sumatra Island (University B).Design/methodology/approachA comparison of the effectiveness of the approach in the two universities forms the focus of the study, which has adopted a single group quasi-experimental design which was conducted in one online teaching-learning session. The authors compared the pre-test and post-test scores of 65 library and information science (LIS) students from both universities.FindingsThe results show that the treatment enhanced ILSE effectively. After the treatment, University A students performed better than those at University B.Research limitations/implicationsThe factors which affected the success of PBL using library e-resources have not been identified in this study, a task for a future qualitative research study.Practical implicationsThis study will both inspire the use of library e-resources in learning activities and promote ILSE.Originality/valueIntegrating PBL with library e-resources provides opportunity to identify the advantages of library e-resources in supporting student ILSE, resulting a better learning achievement.

Assessment of the effectiveness of online e-resources marketing tools in university libraries

Purpose This study aims to assess the effectiveness of online e-resource marketing tools used by university libraries to market e-resources. The specific objectives of this study were to uncover the e-resources that are showcased by university libraries, find out instructions posted by libraries to facilitate access and utilization of e-resources, examine marketing tools used, examine how current and relevant marketing messages and test the functionality of the marketing tools used. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory research design was used to assess the effectiveness of e-resources marketing tools. The study population included all public university libraries in Tanzania. The sample was purposively selected to include all publicly funded libraries as they work under similar management environments. Data collection involved the evaluation of online marketing tools using a matrix checklist. Findings It was revealed that most university libraries use websites for showcasing e-resources. The commonly used social media for marketing e-resources is Facebook followed by Instagram while Twitter and Ask a Librarian are the least used. The results further show that only a few universities provide instructions on how to access and use e-resources. The findings indicate that universities had active communication platforms for marketing e-resources. Furthermore, less than 50% of marketing messages are active and current. It is recommended that marketing e-resources should be integrated into the library’s plans and strategies and this should be informed by library policies. Research limitations/implications Given that, this study involved Tanzanian public university libraries, it is possible that the findings do not represent the same situation in all academic university libraries in the nation. Originality/value This study assesses the effectiveness of online tools used to market e-resources in university libraries in Tanzania. It reveals the e-resources that are showcased online, the instructions provided on how to access the e-resources and the functionality of the marketing tools. Unlike the previous research, which primarily focused on evaluating the Web-based tools in university and college libraries, this study focused on public libraries in the country. The results will not only contribute to the theoretical and practical understanding of the functionality of the marketing tools but also provide actionable insights to decision-makers in libraries in marketing their e-resources.

INSTITUTIONAL FACTORS AND USE OF E-RESOURCES IN THE FACULTY LIBRARY BY STUDENTS OF THE FACULTY OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, NIGERIA

The use of electronic resources (e-resources) has become essential in the digital age for improving students' educational experiences all over the world. Despite the abundance of digital resources, it is still difficult to effectively incorporate these tools into the learning process, especially in the context of higher education institutions in Nigeria. As information specialists, librarians are in the front lines of helping students navigate the complicated world of e-resources by offering them advice, assistance, and guidelines. Their proficiency with retrieval systems, metadata organization, and user instruction improves students' capacity to use e- resources for academic research and learning. This study looks into the relationship between institutional factors and the use of e-resources by students of Faculty of the Social Sciences, University of Ibadan. The study employed a descriptive survey design, while the random sampling technique was used to select 400 respondents among undergraduate and postgraduate students of Faculty of the Social Sciences, University of Ibadan, from whom data was collected through the aid of a questionnaire. The study found that the use of e-resources in the faculty library among the respondents was fairly high and the resources used include e-journals, e-books, Internet services, e-mail services and OPAC. It also found that the institutional factors that affect use of e-resources among the respondents include availability of computers, electricity supply, network speed, availability of login details, Internet connectivity, etc. The study hereby concludes that institutional factors determine the use of e-resources among students of Faculty of the Social Sciences, University of Ibadan.

The utilization of electronic resources (e-resources) has become fundamental to the functioning of academic libraries worldwide. This paper explores the impact of e-resources on academic libraries, focusing on how they enhance research efficiency, accessibility, and knowledge dissemination. The shift from traditional print media to digital platforms has revolutionized information management, access, and retrieval. While e-resources offer significant benefits—such as broader access to global information, real-time updates, and cost-effectiveness—they also present challenges, including issues of digital literacy, infrastructure, and resource overload. This study reviews the advantages and limitations of e-resources in academic libraries and evaluates current trends in e-resource management. Furthermore, it discusses the historical evolution of e-resources in academia and projects future developments in integrating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into resource management systems.

Postgraduate students' approaches to E-resources in the Academic Library with Reference to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu

Electronic sources are faster and easier to use than print indexes when finding information. We can search multiple files simultaneously faster than flipping through book pages. Plus, we could save our searches and resources for future use. Electronic resources are updated more frequently than print materials, too. One of the biggest benefits of electronic resources is that they can be accessed from anywhere with dial-up access, which is great for people who can't attend the library in person. The researcher took the initiative to analyse the P.G. students' approaches to e resources available in the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Library at Tirunelveli. The researcher constructed a strong questionnaire based on previous studies and consulted with field experts. The research supervisor made some corrections in the light of the field experts. The researcher randomly selected 150 P.G. students from the study area and distributed the questionnaire. The researcher received only 120 fully completed questionnaires from the respondents.

Purpose. To summarize the data on the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnostic methods, and treatment of macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel 2) currently known. Material and methods. For this review, a search was conducted on PubMed and eLIBRARY resources, covering scientific publications by domestic and foreign authors from 1980 to 2021. The primary focus of the search was on the topic of MacTel 2. Results. Based on the current understanding of the disease process, it is recognized that dysfunction or loss of Muller cells represents an early stage that contributes to the development of MacTel 2. The review addresses the issues of diagnosis and differential diagnosis, pathogenesis, classification, clinical presentation, and treatment of MacTel 2. Detailed discussion is provided on the changes detected by optical coherence tomography in patients with MacTel 2, which can be valuable for the differential diagnosis of this condition and selection of appropriate patient management strategies. Conclusion. The emergence of new technologies enables the identification of specific changes occurring in the retina in MacTel 2, which require detailed analysis and can be used for differential diagnosis and disease prognosis. This study developed the mobile application integrating with the information in cloud database in order to present the best-suited garment for the user.

Scaling the Library Resources with Zscaler

More and more institutions and universities are implementing security measures to prevent wide-spread cyberattacks. When institutions initiate new security applications, the library is often overlooked. Libraries have complex ecosystems where multiple applications and systems converge with user data and online library resources. These ecosystems have various considerations including multi-factor authentication, proxies, multiple virtual private networks (VPNs), knowledgebases, and vendor inconsistencies. Duke University Health recently launched data security software called Zscaler, which prevented on-campus users from accessing the library e-resources. This presentation describes how Duke University Medical Center Library staff discovered the access issue and tested various workarounds to allow patrons to access library e-resources. The discussion covered how staff continue to work with Duke University Health IT security staff and university administration to find resolutions for the complex integration of security software with the library’s online resources.

Enabling OpenAthens Single Sign On (SSO) Remote Access Authentication to eResources

Accessing the library’s subscribed electronic resources remotely by users has always been a challenge for the library. KMC Health Sciences Library, Manipal relied on proxy-based authentication to remotely cater its e-resources to library users. To enhance the secure usage of electronic resources and to provide user-friendly authentication, the library has considered a Single Sign-On (SSO) remote access through OpenAthens. The article demonstrates the setup process of OpenAthens and the various steps involved in the transformation of the library from proxy-based authentication. The single sign-on setup at the library has benefited users in having a single set of credentials to access all the library e-resources, reducing the hassle of remembering multiple login credentials. Features such as cloud hosting, granular usage reports, and the admin dashboard gave complete hold on the usage of library e-resources. Although OpenAthens has its merits, the setup process involved challenges in the integration of existing library-subscribed e-resources. This article provides insight into the step-by-step process of enabling OpenAthens, addresses troubleshooters, and makes recommendations to libraries looking towards SSO remote access.

An Assessment of Students' Knowledge Ambassadors Program in Promoting Usage of e-Resources in the Academic Library at Mzumbe University, Tanzania

This study assesses the Effectiveness of Students' Knowledge Ambassadors (Student Knowledge Ambassadors s) program in promoting the usage of subscribed e-resources in an academic library in Tanzania. Specifically, the study intended to identify the criteria used to select Student Knowledge Ambassadors in promoting the usage of e-resources, examine the performance of students' knowledge ambassadors in promoting the usage of subscribed e-resources and examine the challenges Students Knowledge Ambassadors face in promoting the usage of subscribed e-resources. A descriptive case study research design, using both quantitative and qualitative approaches were employed in the study. Along with this, cross-sectional surveys and Focus group discussions (FGD) were employed to collect data. Whereas SPSS was used to analyze quantitative data, content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. Important criteria considered in selecting students knowledge ambassadors to join the program include self-confidence, self-motivation, ICT competencies, and information search competencies as well as communication skills. The majority of students were aware of the student's knowledge ambassador. Various factors hindered the effective use of student knowledge ambassadors, including low internet connectivity, inadequate mentorship, inadequate funds, lack of incentives, inadequate ICT facilities, and misconceptions about the accountability of student knowledge ambassadors. The study concludes that in the qualitative findings, the best selection criteria for student knowledge ambassadors must be guided by well-written rules and policies headed by librarians depending on the activities. Similarly, the study concludes that there is a need to address multiple challenges affecting the effectiveness of Student knowledge ambassadors as well as improve viable strategies that aim to promote the effectiveness of students' knowledge ambassadors in promoting the usage of electronic resources. Based on the results, the study recommends the practice of the student knowledge ambassadors program in the university library across all faculties and at all campuses, as stated in the strategic plan.

The Covid-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the education and work sectors, resulting in significant transformations. The prevalence of online learning and remote employment has necessitated adaptation within numerous institutions, including university libraries like the Unikom Library, to cater to the needs of their readers effectively. Initially, the Unikom Library encountered challenges due to its primary emphasis on printed books in its collection, with digital collections not yet receiving significant attention. This poses a challenge in delivering sufficient services. To address this issue, the Unikom Library implemented an innovative approach by incorporating electronic materials into the Learning Management System (LMS), namely Moodle, a platform for online education. This aims to comprehensively account for successfully integrating the Unikom Library e-resources program with the LMS, employing a unified access approach. Consequently, incorporating library materials into the LMS has demonstrated significant efficacy amidst the epidemic, as evidenced by increased user engagement. This observation indicates that the electronic resources accessible through the LMS at the Unikom Library have emerged as a viable and efficient option for readers seeking reference materials. The integration of electronic resources with the LMS has been beneficial for the Unikom Library, enabling it to maintain its relevance and effectively cater to the needs of its users among the challenges posed by the current circumstances. The statement above underscores the significance of adaptability and innovation as crucial factors in addressing the various issues encountered by educational institutions and libraries amidst the digital era and ongoing pandemic.

Acceptance and utilisation of lean principles as a business improvement initiative at an academic library in South Africa

This study used a case study approach to explore how librarians understood lean principles and the extent to which they used these principles to improve their practices. Lean principles have the potential of improving the process in the operation of organisations. The application of lean principles in many organisations, including academic libraries, seems to be limited. Although there is much scholarly communication on the successful implementation of lean principles, no research could be found on the implementation of lean principles in the processes and workflows of creating access to e-resources in academic libraries. An exploratory qualitative case study design within an interpretive paradigm informed this study. A purposive sample of 12 participants was interviewed and the data were analysed, using the reflexive thematic analysis supported by ATLAS.ti 22. The participants were not familiar with lean principles. However, they could articulate their responsibilities of the processes and workflows in creating and managing access to e-resources in their workspaces. The empirical data from the lean waste exercises affirmed that should lean principles be implemented in the processes, and workflows to streamline access to e-resources at the academic library it will enhance the delivery of an excellent customer service. The findings of this study can inform policymakers and librarians on how the implementation of lean principles to the processes and workflows can enhance and streamline access to e-resources.

The Effectiveness of the E-Library as a Learning Resource for Elementary School Students' Social Studies in Improving Literacy Skills

The aim of this study is to describe the effectiveness of an e-library as a social study (hereafter, IPS) learning resource for elementary school students in improving their literacy skills. When developing learning materials for social studies, Social Studies (IPS) teachers in elementary schools should have a clear goal and direction, including the use of e-library resources that can enhance students' literacy skills. A descriptive qualitative research approach was utilised to examine the efficacy of the e-library as a learning resource for primary school pupils in the field of social sciences, with a specific focus on enhancing their reading abilities. Data was collected through a literature review and document analysis on social studies learning in elementary schools, literacy skills, and e-libraries. In this investigation, up to 40 research articles were used. The findings indicated that the e-library was effective in helping primary school students study social subjects and develop their literacy skills. In order to optimize the potential of the library, the government or schools should: 1) provide relevant learning resources; 2) establish a 24-hour accessible system; 3) employ a creative librarian; and 4) utilize information technology to target students. This will enable students to access and acquire learning content easily. Additionally, the library should create a space for students to express their ideas freely and channel creativity, making library activities more lively and enjoyable.
