A new synthesis of thioketones from hydrazones and disulfur dichloride

Reaction of ketone hydrazones with disulfur dichloride in the presence of triethylamine in benzene at 0 °C - room temperature afforded the corresponding thiones in a moderate to high yield, probably via thioxothioketone (R 2C=S=S) intermediate.

Cyclic polysulphur compounds from the iron-catalysed reaction of m-dimethoxybenzene with disulphur dichloride

The iron-catalysed reaction of m-dimethoxybenzene with sulphur chlorides (SCl2 and S2Cl2) has been investigated both neat and in dilute solution. Neat reaction gives linear polysulphides (3), bis-(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl) sulphide (4), and 1,3-dimethoxy-4,6-bis-(2,4-dimethoxyphenylthio)benzene (5), while in dilute solution the formation of 5,7,14,16-tetramethoxy-1,2,3,10,11,12-hexathia[3.3]metacyclophane (1) and 4,6,12,14,20,22-hexamethoxy1,2,9,10,17,18-hexathia[2.2.2]metacyclophane (2) is observed. Compounds (1) and (2) were also obtained by independent synthetic routes. Their 1H n.m.r. and mass spectra are discussed.

Mesoionic 1,2,5-thiadiazolium-4-olates

α-Alkylaminophenylacetamide derivatives (1) reacted with sulphur monochloride followed by treatment with base to give a new mesoionic heterocyclic system, 1,2,5-thiadiazolium-4-olates (3).

Microwave spectrum and structure of disulfur dichloride, S 235Cl 2

The microwave spectrum of disulfur dichloride, S 2 35Cl 2, has been studied in the frequency range 9–39 GHz. The Q-branch transitions were assigned with the aid of a diagram (similar to the Loomis—Wood diagram) specifically designed for Q-branch assignment. The assignment of some of the R-branch transitions was confirmed by means of the double resonance method. The rotational and centrifugal distortion constants were obtained. The r 0 structure of this molecule was evaluated with the SCl distance fixed to the electron diffraction value. The structure thus obtained agrees well with that deduced in the electron diffraction study.

Acetylenic Acids. IV. The Reactions of Alkoxy-Substituted Phenylpropiolic Acids and Esters with Sulfur Halides, Particularly Thionyl Chloride

3,4-Dialkoxy-substituted phenylpropiolic acids and esters react with thionyl chloride to give good yields of substituted 1-benzothiophen systems. Similar reactions of m-and p-methoxyphenylpropiolic acids and 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenylpropiolic acid, which yield mixtures of products, are reported. In contrast, 2,5- and 2,3-dimethoxyphenylpropiolic acids gave mixtures in which a coumarin is the major product. The effect of adding pyridine to the reaction mixture is outlined. Reactions involving sulfur monochloride and sulfur dichloride generally gave much lower yields of these products. Attempts to form organometallic intermediates from the 3-chloro-1-benzothiophen products were unsuccessful.

Reaction between Vanadium Trichloride Oxide and Hydrogen Sulfide

Abstract The details of the reaction between vanadium trichloride oxide and hydrogen sulfide were examined at 20 and 60 °C. The main products by the reaction were vanadium dichloride oxide, sulfur, and hydrogen chloride. In addition to these products, small amounts of vanadium trichloride, vanadium tetrachloride, disulfur dichloride, and sulfur dioxide were formed. The formations of the above-mentioned reaction products can be explained as follows: The first stage is the reaction between vanadium trichloride oxide and hydrogen sulfide, 2VOCl3(1)+H2S(g)→2VOCl2(s)+S(s)+2HCl(g). Then the resulting sulfur reacts with the unreacted vanadium trichloride oxide, 2VOCl3(1)+2S(s)→2VOCl2(s)+S2Cl2(1). The resulting disulfur dichloride subsequently reacts with the unreacted vanadium trichloride oxide, 2VOCl3(1)+S2Cl2(1)→2VCl4(1)+S(s)+SO2(g). The resulting vanadium tetrachloride reacts with the sulfur formed during the reaction, 2VCl4(1)+2S(s)→2VCl3(s)+S2Cl2(1), and also reacts with hydrogen sulfide, 2VCl4(1)+H2S(g)→2VCl3(s)+S(s)+2HCl(g).

Crossed-beam chemiluminescence: The alkaline earth rearrangement reaction M + S 2Cl 2 → S 2* + MCl 2

The reaction of the heavier Group IIA metal atoms Ba, Sr, and Ca with S 2 Cl 2 under crossed-beam conditions produces a chemiluminescent spectrum in which the S 2 B 3ϵ u −-X 3ϵ g − emission bands are the most prominent features. In addition, chemiluminescence is also observed from excited states of the alkaline earth monochlorides and from a “pseudo-continuum” which is believed to originate from an excited polyatomic metal halide, probably the alkaline earth dichloride. More than 100 bands are assigned to the S 2 B-X band system; the vibrational levels of the S 2 B state are found to be populated by the reaction in a non-thermal manner. The reaction forming S 2 * is determined to be the first order with respect to both the ground state metal atom and the disulfur dichloride molecule. Phenomenological cross sections for removal of metal atoms from the metal beam by S 2 Cl 2 are 162 ± 20 A 2 for Ba, 105 ± 20 A 2 for Sr, and 92 ± 20 A 2 for Ca, which is consistent with an electron jump model if the vertical electron affinity of S 2C l 2 is 3.25 eV. Absolute photon yield measurement in- dicate that less than 1% of the reacton products are S 2 * molecules that emit in the 2800–6000 A region. From the single-collision chemiluminescence spectra the following dissociation energies are estimated: D o o( Cl-S 2 Cl)=44.2 ± 5 kcal/mole and D o o(S 2- Cl=54 ± 5 kcal/mole. A speculation is offered that most of the reaction exoergicity appears in the S 2 * product when the S 2 Cl 2M collision complex passes through a nearly-planar, five-member ring structure in separating to form products.

Synthesis of 2-mercapto-substituted thieno[2,3-d]thiazoles and ben zothieno[3,2-d] thiazoles

2-Mercaptothieno[2, 3-d]thiazoles were synthesized from bis(2-nitro-3-thienyl) disulfide by successive reduction of, initially, the disulfide bond and the nitro group in the presence of carbon disulfide without isolation of the intermediate 2-nitro-3-mercaptothiophene. 2-Mercaptobenzo-[b]thieno[3, 2-d]thiazole was synthesized by reaction of 3-aminobenzo[b]thiophene hydrochloride with sulfur monochloride and cleavage of the resulting benzo[b]thienothiazothionium chloride with sodium sulfide in the presence of carbon disulfide.

Triphenylpnictogen chalcogenides: A preparative and mass-spectrometric study

Oxidative-addition reactions of triphenylpnictogens, Ph 3M (M = N, P, As, Sb, Bi), with selenium(IV) oxide, sulphur dichloride, disulphur dichloride, diselenium dichloride, lead(IV) acetate and potassium selenocyanate have been studied. Mass spectra are described of Ph 3M (M = N, P, As, Sb, Bi), Ph 3MO (M = P, As), Ph 3MS (M = P, As, Sb), Ph 3PSe, Ph 3Sb(OH) 2 and Ph 3M(OCOCH 3) 2 (M = Sb, Bi).

Abstract The reaction of sulfur monochloride gave 2,4,6-tri-t-butylchlorobenzene (3) from 1,3,5-tri-t-butylbenzene (1), but gave the corresponding sulfide and disulfide from mesitylene (2). The reaction of N-chlorodimethylamine gave 3, 2-chloro-3,5-di-t-butyltoluene and 2,4,6-trimethylchlorobenzene from 1, 3,5-di-t-butyltoluene and 2, respectively. The reaction of N-chlorodimethylamine with benzene gave chlorobenzene or N,N-dimethylaniline in 1-nitropropane or nitromethane.

Vapour state Raman spectra and thermodynamic properties of sulphur dichloride and disulphur dichloride

Vapour state Raman spectra with polarization data are reported for sulphur dichloride and disulphur dichloride. A heated Raman vapour cell for use over the temperature range 300–700 K is described. Complete vibrational assignments for sulphur dichloride and disulphur dichloride in the vapour state are given, along with their ideal gas state thermodynamic properties over the temperature range 273·15–1500 K.
