Evolution Kinetics of Stabilizing Pickering Emulsion by Brush-Modified Janus Particles: DPD Simulation and Experimental Insights.

In the present study, we report the evolution of stabilizing Pickering emulsions using brush-modified Janus particles (JPs), utilizing the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation technique. Our results are subsequently corroborated with experimental findings. Each JP has one-half of the hydrophobic surface, with the other half embedded with hydrophilic polymer brushes grown via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Our generic simulation model analyzes the chemical kinetics of polymer brush growth on one-half of the initiator-embedded microparticle (MP) surface, resulting in the formation of JP. This involves evaluating monomer conversion and reaction rates. Our results exhibit a substantial influence of the number of JPs, grafted brush density, and brush length on oil-in-water emulsion stability. We studied the evolution kinetics and stability of emulsion formation by analyzing the growth of average domain size and corresponding scaling functions up to a late time limit. This study aims to clarify the connection between the size, quantity, and functionality of JPs and the stability of Pickering emulsions.

Dissipative particle dynamics simulation of proposed artificial filament contraction mechanism using variable external force inspired by nature

ABSTRACT In this numerical research, the proposed mechanism of contraction of an artificial muscle filament with regard to the performance of a natural filament and the possibility of industrial production is presented using the Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) method. First, an artificial myosin component has been simulated, which includes a micro-nozzle with a thin fixed two-end polymer membrane in the middle. The swelling of the limited permeable membrane from one side results from moving the DPD fluid and, consequently, the fluid force will be transferred. Also, by changing the direction of the movement of the fluid, the swelling of the polymer membrane is reversed. It has been shown that the amount of swelling is directly dependent on the amount and direction of external force implementation ( F e = ± 0.001, ± 0.003, ± 0.005 and ± 0.007) and there is a delay (almost one DPD unit) in the amount of displacement when the direction of the flow is changed due to the inertia force effect. The proposed mechanism includes six double artificial myosins, whose myosin movement causes that actin to take contraction in a wave motion considering both forward and backward movements of the limited permeable thin membrane. Also, more artificial myosins may provide smoother contraction.

Mitigating strategy and mechanism of cement slurry contamination caused by oil-based mud: Macro-micro experiments, molecular dynamics simulation and dissipative particle dynamics simulation

During the cementing process, the oil-well cement (OWC) inevitably comes into contact with oil-based mud (OBM), which contaminates the OWC due to the incompatibility between OBM and the OWC. As a solution, hydrophilic surfactants can reduce interfacial tension and enhance the wetting compatibility of oil and water. Therefore, adding surfactants to the OWC is expected to alleviate contamination caused by OBM. In this study, a new strategy was proposed to combine non-ionic surfactants and anionic surfactants to form a composite surfactant (OP-S2), which overcomes the defect that excessive use of anionic surfactants deteriorates the performance of the OWC—showing great potential in adjusting the compatibility between OBM and the OWC and reducing cement contamination. The mechanism of contamination alleviation during the cementing process was elucidated by comparing the anticontamination properties of a single non-ionic surfactant (OP-S1) and OP-S2. In addition, molecular dynamics (MD) and dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations were used to verify the mechanism of different types of surfactants in removing contamination further, providing theoretical guidance for future research on anti-contamination agents.

Hybrid Microneedle-Mediated Transdermal Delivery of Atorvastatin Calcium-Loaded Polymeric Micelles for Hyperlipidemia Therapy.

Hyperlipidemia has been a huge challenge to global health, leading to the cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes. Atorvastatin calcium (AC), a widely prescribed drug for hyperlipidemia, faces huge challenges with oral administration due to poor water solubility and hepatic first-pass effects, resulting in low therapeutic efficacy. In this work, we designed and developed a hybrid microneedle (MN) patch system constructed with soluble poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and AC-loaded polymeric micelles (AC@PMs) for transdermal delivery of AC to enhance the hyperlipidemia therapy. We first prepared various AC@PM formulations self-assembled from mPEG-PLA and mPEG-PLA-PEG block copolymers using a dialysis method and evaluated the physicochemical properties in combination with experiment skills and dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. Then, we encapsulated the AC@PMs into the PVA MN patch using a micromold filling method, followed by characterizing the performances, especially the structural stability, mechanical performance, and biosafety. After conducting in vivo experiments using a hyperlipidemic rat model, our findings revealed that the hybrid microneedle-mediated administration exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy when compared to oral delivery methods. In summary, we have successfully developed a hybrid microneedle (MN) patch system that holds promising potential for the efficient transdermal delivery of hydrophobic drugs.

New strategy for structure rearrangement of thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes and offering potential use in both aqueous and organic solvents

The purity of sodium hexafluorophosphate (NaPF6) is crucial for the preparation of electrolytes in manufacturing. We propose a simple process in order to induce membrane structure rearrangement process (SRP) by activating thin-film composite (TFC) membranes with polyamide (PA) structure and explore their potential green recycling application in concentrating sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) electrolyte. The method utilizes a solution containing polar aprotic solvent as the soaking and activating solution to swell and disintegrate the loosely cross-linked PA layer, and a non-solvent solidification solution complete the SRP, enhancing the permeability of the PA layer while maintaining high rejection rates for divalent ions. Subsequently, during the further treatment of the membrane surface in structure rearrangement, tert-butanol (TBA) is introduced into the aqueous solution to reconstruct the surface PA layer, further improving the permeability. The optimal D8010T10 achieved a permeation flux of 24.2 L m−2 h−1·bar−1, with rejection rates for sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), magnesium chloride (MgCl2), and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) reaching 94.7 %, 98.4 %, and 99.1 % respectively. And the mechanism of SRP with different solvent is analyzed and explained through dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. This study provides a commercially viable approach for manufacturing high-performance membranes. The D8010T10 membrane achieves more than 90 % separation efficiency for sodium hexafluorophosphate (NaPF6) dissolved in different solvents, providing a potential solution for the concentration and recovery of NaPF6 in lab-scale, verified its potential use in the organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) and a path way for waste membrane recycling and degrading use in the industry.

DPD simulation to reproduce lipid membrane microdomains based on fragment molecular orbital calculations

Abstract Lipid domains play a critical role in signal transduction and transport across cell 
membranes. The formation of domains in "HLC" ternary lipid bilayers composed of high 
transition temperature (high-Tm) lipids, low-Tm lipids, and cholesterol (Chol) has been 
extensively studied as a raft-like system. Recently, experiments were performed to control 
the formation of submicron domains in LLC lipid bilayers containing low-Tm
phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), low-Tm phosphatidylcholine (PC), and Chol by 
manipulating the presence or absence of Chol. The formation of microdomains in this LLC 
mixture was replicated by dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation. The results show 
that domain formation can be replicated.

Investigation of morphology and structure of drug-loaded PLA-b-PEO-b-PLA polymeric micelle: A dissipative particle dynamics simulations study.

The dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation was used to study the morphologies and structures of the paclitaxel-loaded PLA-b-PEO-b-PLA polymeric micelle. We focused on the influences of PLA block length, PLA-b-PEO-b-PLA copolymer concentration, paclitaxel drug content on morphologies and structures of the micelle. Our simulations show that: (i) with the PLA block length increase, the self-assemble structure of PLA-b-PEO-b-PLA copolymers with paclitaxel vary between onion-like structure (core-middle layer-shell) to spherical core-shell structure. The PEO shell thins and the size of the PLA core increases. The onionlike structures are comprised of the PEO hydrophilic core, the PLA hydrophobic middle layer, and the PEO hydrophilic shell, the distribution of the paclitaxel drug predominantly occurs within the hydrophobic intermediate layer; (ii) The system forms a spherical core-shell structure when a small amount of the drug is added, and within a certain range, the size of the spherical structure increases as the drug amount increases. When the drug contents (volume fraction) cdrug = 10%, it can be observed that the PLA4-b-PEO19-b-PLA4 spherical structures connect to form rod-shaped structures. With the length of PLA block NPLA = 8, as the paclitaxel drug concentrations cdrug = 4%, PEO has been insufficient to completely encapsulate the PLA and paclitaxel drug beads. To enhance drug loading capacity while maintaining stability of the system in aqueous solution, the optimal composition for loading paclitaxel is PLA4-b-PEO19-b-PLA4; the drug content is not higher than 4%; (iii) The paclitaxel-loaded PLA4-b-PEO19-b-PLA4 micelle undergo the transition from onionlike (core-middle layer-shell) to spherical (core-shell) to rod-shaped and lamellar structure as the PLA4-b-PEO19-b-PLA4 copolymer concentration increases from ccp = 10% to 40%.

Channel width-dependent viscosity and slip length in nanoslits and effect of surface wettability

The channel width-dependent behaviors of viscosity (μ) and slip length (ls) in nanoslits are investigated using many-body dissipative particle dynamics simulation in both Poiseuille and Couette flow systems. In both systems, the viscosity and slip length increase as the channel width (w) grows in smaller channels, while they reach bulk values in larger channels. Moreover, as the surface wettability decreases, the slip length is found to increase, while the viscosity remains the same. The channel width-dependent behavior in nanoslits can be explained by the unique structure of the confined fluid. As the channel width narrows, the uniform density profile in the central region diminishes, and an oscillation pattern appears throughout the system. The change in the microstructure with the channel width alters friction between layers of fluid in laminar flow and fluid-solid friction, leading to a w-dependent μ and ls. Nonetheless, the alteration of surface wettability influences only fluid–solid interactions but not the friction between layers of fluid.

Simulating Brownian motion in thermally fluctuating viscoelastic fluids by using the smoothed profile method

To investigate the Brownian motion of individual particles suspended in viscoelastic fluids, the stochastic smoothed profile method (SPm) for direct numerical simulation is developed by extending deterministic SPm for suspensions in viscoelastic media. To simulate viscoelastic flow driven by thermal fluctuations in the suspending medium, the random stress in the fluid momentum equation as well as the random driving force for the conformation tensor in the Oldroyd-B model are incorporated according to the fluctuating hydrodynamics and fluctuating viscoelasticity formalisms. The thermal equilibrium and dynamical properties calculated by using numerical simulations successfully reproduce the analytic predictions, validating the direct simulation for the coupled fluctuating Navier–Stokes and Oldroyd-B equations and for the coupling between the stochastic viscoelastic medium and individual particles. As an application of the stochastic SPm, we investigate finite system-size effects under periodic boundary conditions (PBCs) on the passive microrheological relationship between the mean-square displacement (MSD) of a Brownian particle and the medium's dynamic modulus. Comparing the modulus that was microrheologically calculated from the MSD with the input modulus reveals that the effect of periodic image cell interaction appears not only in the long-time diffusive regime but also in the short-time region. A frequency-dependent finite system-size correction is implemented by phenomenologically extending the long-time diffusive regime correction, allowing passive microrheology analysis under PBCs. This result can be directly applied to other mesoscale numerical simulations including coarse-grained molecular dynamics and dissipative particle dynamics simulations.

Coarse-grained simulation of thermal conductivity of boron nitride/epoxy composites based on DPD and SPH method

In this study, thermal conductivity (TC) of BN/polymer composites is investigated utilizing dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) and smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) methods by establishing the coarse-grained (CG) models of boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) and boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS). The Iterative Boltzmann inversion (IBI) approach is employed to calculate the parameters of the potential function of the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) coarse grain model for DPD method. Mesoscopic simulations on the TC of BNNT/EP, BNNS/EP, and BNNT/BNNS/EP composites are performed using SPH and DPD simulations to investigate the effects of nanofiller ratio, aspect ratio, size, and orientation on TC. The CG models established for the BNNT and BNNS structures are proven to be efficient in DPD and SPH simulations for predicting the TC of h-BN/polymer composites. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the TC of BNNT/BNNS/EP composites is superior to that of BNNT/EP and BNNS/EP composites at the same filler ratio due to the synergistic effect of BNNT and BNNS.

Characterization of partial wetting by CMAS droplets using multiphase many-body dissipative particle dynamics and data-driven discovery based on PINNs

The molten sand that is a mixture of calcia, magnesia, alumina and silicate, known as CMAS, is characterized by its high viscosity, density and surface tension. The unique properties of CMAS make it a challenging material to deal with in high-temperature applications, requiring innovative solutions and materials to prevent its buildup and damage to critical equipment. Here, we use multiphase many-body dissipative particle dynamics simulations to study the wetting dynamics of highly viscous molten CMAS droplets. The simulations are performed in three dimensions, with varying initial droplet sizes and equilibrium contact angles. We propose a parametric ordinary differential equation (ODE) that captures the spreading radius behaviour of the CMAS droplets. The ODE parameters are then identified based on the physics-informed neural network (PINN) framework. Subsequently, the closed-form dependency of parameter values found by the PINN on the initial radii and contact angles are given using symbolic regression. Finally, we employ Bayesian PINNs (B-PINNs) to assess and quantify the uncertainty associated with the discovered parameters. In brief, this study provides insight into spreading dynamics of CMAS droplets by fusing simple parametric ODE modelling and state-of-the-art machine-learning techniques.

A Structure Independent Molecular Fragment Interfuse Model for Mesoscale Dissipative Particle Dynamics Simulation of Peptides.

There is a need to develop robust computational models for mesoscale simulation of the structure of peptides over large length scales toward the discovery of novel peptides for medical applications to address the issues of peptide aggregation, enzymatic degradation, and short half-life. The primary objective was to predict the structure and conformation of peptides whose native structures are not known. This work presents a new model for computation of interaction parameters between the beads in coarse-grained dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation that is properly calibrated for amino acids, supports compressibility requirement of water molecules, and accounts for subtle differences in the structure of amino acids and the charge in the side chain of charged amino acids. This new model is referred to as Structure Independent Molecular Fragment Interfuse Model, abbreviated as SIMFIM, because it accounts for specific interactions between different beads, which represent molecular fragments of the amino acids, in calculating nonbonded interaction parameters in the absence of knowing the actual peptide structure. The electrostatic interactions are incorporated in this model by using a normal distribution of charges around the center of the beads to prevent the collapse of oppositely charged soft beads. The uniquely parameterized DPD force field in the SIMFIM model is optimized for a given peptide with respect to the degree of coarse-grained graining for simulating the peptide over long times and length scales. The SIMFIM model was tested in this work using four peptides, namely, TrpZip2, Rubrivinodin, Lihuanodin, and IC3-CB1/Gai peptides, whose structures were sourced from the Protein Data Bank. The SIMFIM model predicted radius of gyration (Rg) values for the peptides closer to the actual structures as compared to the conventional model, and there was less deviation between the predicted and actual structures of the peptides.

Molecular Simulation Study of the Kinetics and Mechanism of Micellization of Charged and Uncharged Block Copolymer in Aqueous Solution: Polystyrene-Block-Poly(acrylic acid) PS-b-PAA

The micellization kinetics, dynamics, and diffusional properties of poly(styrene)-block-poly(acrylic acid) copolymer chains in salt-free aqueous solution have been investigated as a function of the copolymer composition (XPS ) for the cases of un-ionized (charge density f = 0) and ionized PAA blocks (charge density f = 1), for the first time to our knowledge via atomistic molecular dynamic simulations. The micelle formation mechanism was inspected by tracking the population of unimers and clusters across the simulation trajectory; it confirmed that the asymmetric copolymer micelle formation followed a combined approach of unimer insertion and cluster fusion mechanisms, while symmetric micelle formation followed the unimer insertion method exclusively. Micelle formation took a longer time for copolymers having charged (ionized) PAA blocks (f > 0) and relatively short PS blocks (number fraction of PS repeat units in copolymer XPS < 0.5) due to the presence of a greater number of hydrophobic groups, in agreement with the micellization kinetics observed for model copolymer micelles via DPD (Dissipative Particle Dynamics) simulation studies in literature. The conformational dynamics were studied using the relaxation of backbone dihedral angles and radius of gyration, for the core and corona blocks, respectively, showed that the PS blocks relaxed slower as compared to the soluble PAA blocks in solution due to their hydrophobic nature. The conformational relaxation time increased linearly for the PS blocks and was invariant for the PAA blocks with respect to XPS. The interaction dynamics of the PS-b-PAA copolymer micelles studied via the relaxation times of the PAA-PAA inter-chain (τHB,PP) and PAA-water inter-molecular hydrogen bonds (τHB,PW) showed the increase of τHB,PP, and the decrease of τHB,PW in solution with the increase in XPS. The PAA-water H-bond relaxes slower at f = 1 than that at f = 0 due to the stronger affinity of ionized PAA units with water molecules. The diffusivity of the copolymer chains decreased exponentially with an increase in XPS value, which is in agreement with the theoretical and experimental observations described in the literature.

Assessing the structural stability and drug encapsulation efficiency of poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(L-lactic acid) nanoparticles loaded with atorvastatin calcium: Based on dissipative particle dynamics

Block polymer micelles have been proven highly biocompatible and effective in improving drug utilization for delivering atorvastatin calcium. Therefore, it is of great significance to measure the stability of drug-loading nano micelles from the perspective of block polymer molecular sequence design, which would provide theoretical guidance for subsequent clinical applications. This study aims to investigate the structural stability of drug-loading micelles formed by two diblock/triblock polymers with various block sequences through coarse-grained dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. From the perspectives of the binding strength of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) in nanoparticles, hydrophilic bead surface coverage, and the morphological alteration of nanoparticles induced by shear force, the ratio of hydrophilic/hydrophobic sequence length has been observed to affect the stability of nanoparticles. We have found that for diblock polymers, PEG3kda-PLLA2kda has the best stability (corresponding hydrophilic coverage ratio is 0.832), while PEG4kda-PLLA5kda has the worst (coverage ratio 0.578). For triblock polymers, PEG4kda-PLLA2kda-PEG4kda has the best stability (0.838), while PEG4kda-PLLA5kda-PEG4kda possesses the worst performance (0.731), and the average performance on stability is better than nanoparticles composed of diblock polymers.

Preparation of indapamide-HP-β-CD and indapamide-PVP nanoparticles by supercritical antisolvent technology: Experimental and DPD simulations

The poor aqueous solubility of indapamide (INP) limits its applicability in various biomedical applications. To overcome this issue, nanosized INP particles (INP-HP-β-CD NPs and INP-PVP-K30 NPs) were fabricated using the supercritical antisolvent (SAS) approach to improve the bioavailability of INP. The process, formula, and supercritical antisolvent process were optimized using single-factor and orthogonal methods. The tiny INP-HP-β-CD NPs with a particle size of 142.5 nm and INP-PVP-K30 NPs with a particle size of 150.4 nm were obtained under optimum conditions. Further analysis and characterization, such as SEM, FTIR, XRD, DSC, 1H NMR, and dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations, were carried out to verify the formation mechanism of the INP complex nanoparticles. The altered physical state of INP from crystalline to amorphous loaded onto the polymer resulted in a significant improvement in the solubility and dissolution rate and high biocompatibility with cells compared to raw INP. Therefore, we propose that INP nanoparticles processed by a supercritical antisolvent process can be used as an advanced drug delivery system, especially for insoluble drugs.

Dissipative Particle Dynamics Study on the Phase Region of Spatial Gradient Materials Produced by Photoinduced Isomerization

AbstractSpatial gradient materials occupy an important research position in the field of functional materials with their unique porous structure. Gradient changes in pore size and density distribution have received extensive attention in the fields of biomimetic and smart materials. The gradient transition law is mathematically related to the driving force of isomerization reaction and component phase separation. In this study, a dissipative particle dynamics simulation is used to introduce photoisomerization reactions into the system. Lambert's law is used to construct a reaction model for the variation of light intensity with irradiation depth, and a gradient structure with a spatial transition law is obtained. The effects of the extinction coefficient ε, the initial reaction probability Pr0, and the interactions α(A,B) between the isomerized molecules as well as the viscosity on the formation of the gradient structure are investigated in detail. Furthermore, the mathematical proportionality between the size of the phase region and interfacial energy of the two phases is elucidated. This study provides preliminary computational insights into the factors affecting the photoinduced phase separation process of polymeric gradient materials. It may help to develop effective strategies to improve the phase separation and properties of polymer gradient materials in subsequent studies.

Co-assembly of Amphiphilic Triblock Copolymers with Nanodrugs and Drug Release Kinetics in Solution.

Polymeric vesicles present great potential in disease treatment as they can be featured as a structurally stable and easily functionalized drug carrier that can simultaneously encapsulate multiple drugs and release them on-demand. Based on the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation, the drug-loaded vesicles were designed by the co-assembly process of linear amphiphilic triblock copolymers and hydrophobic nanodrugs in solvents, and most importantly, the drug release behavior of drug-loaded vesicles were intensively investigated. The drug-loaded aggregates, such as vesicles, spherical micelles, and disk-like micelles, were observed by varying the size and concentration of nanodrugs and the length of the hydrophobic block. The distribution of nanodrugs in the vesicles was intensively analyzed. As the size of the nanodrugs increases, the localization of nanodrugs change from being unable to fully wrap in the vesicle wall to the uniform distribution and finally to the aggregation in the vesicles at the fixed concentration of nanodrugs. The membrane thickness of the drug-loaded polymeric vesicle can be increased, and the nanodrugs localized closer to the center of the vesicle by increasing the length of the hydrophobic block. The nanodrugs will be released from vesicles by varying the interactions between the nanodrug and the solvent or the hydrophobic block and the solvent, respectively. We found that the release kinetics conforms to the first-order kinetic model, which can be used to fit the cumulative release rate of nanodrugs over time. The results showed that increasing the size of nanodrugs, the length of hydrophobic block, and the interaction parameters between the hydrophobic block and the solvent will slow down the release rate of the nanodrug and change the drug release process from monophasic to biphasic release model.

Modification of magnetorheological fluid and its compatibility with metal skeleton: Insights from multi-body dissipative particle dynamics simulations and experimental study

Magnetorheological fluid (MRF), as a smart material, plays a pivotal role in sealing equipment. However, the interfacial compatibility between MRF and metal significantly impacts the adhesion of the two phases, which subsequently determines the sealing performance of MRF once it is used as a sealing medium. However, the interface mechanism and dynamical magnetic migration performances between MRF and metals at the microscopic level are not clear. In this study, dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) and multi-body DPD simulations are carried out to examine the settling stability, static wetting characteristics, and magnetic migration ability of MRF droplets incorporating different surfactants. It is revealed that oleic acid stands out as the optimal surfactant for MRF, shedding light on the mechanism of MRF droplet infiltration on metal sheets and unveiling five crucial wetting processes. Furthermore, a thorough comparison among simulation results, experimental findings, and numerical analysis was conducted to verify the reliability of theoretical research on the microscale behavior of MRF. Moreover, investigating the driving characteristics of MRF droplets within a uniform magnetic field confirmed two driving processes: significant deformation and limitation of excessive diffusion. The analysis of the vortical structure within the droplets revealed the presence of diffusion effects caused by magnetic particles. The velocity distribution within the droplets indicated different flow rates, with higher velocities at the core and slower velocities at the edge, suggesting the presence of internal flow patterns.

Simulating micelle self-assembly to assess potential for viscosity build in surfactant formulations

Self-assembly of surfactants into complex structures is key to the performance of many formulated products, which form a significant fraction of the world’s manufactured goods. Here we adopt the dissipative particle dynamics simulation approach to explore the self-assembly process of surfactants, with the aim of understanding what information can be obtained that may correlate with an increased zero-shear viscosity of surfactant based products. To this end we experimentally measured the zero-shear viscosity of mixed micelle systems comprised of cocoamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) and sodium lauryl sarcosinate (SLSar), as a function of the CAPB/SLSar mass ratio and pH, and characterised the early stages of self-assembly of the same systems computationally. From simulation we identify three distinct behaviors in the micellar self-assembly process (logarithmic, linear and cubic growth) which we find show some degree of correlation with the experimental zero-shear viscosity. Owing to the relatively short simulation times required, this may provide formulation scientists with a practical route to identify regions of interest (i. e. those with a desired zero-shear viscosity) prior to synthesising de novo (potentially natural) surfactants.

Steric repulsion introduced by loop constraints modulates the microphase separation of chromatins.

Within the confines of a densely populated cell nucleus, chromatin undergoes intricate folding, forming loops, domains, and compartments under the governance of topological constraints and phase separation. This coordinated process inevitably introduces interference between different folding strategies. In this study, we model interphase chromatins as block copolymers with hetero-hierarchical loops within a confined system. Employing dissipative particle dynamics simulations and scaling analysis, we aim to explain how the structure and distribution of loop domains modulate the microphase separation of chromatins. Our results highlight the correlation between the microphase separation of the copolymer and the length, heterogeneity, and hierarchically nested levels of the loop domains. This correlation arises from steric repulsion intrinsic to loop domains. The steric repulsion induces variations in chain stiffness (including local orientation correlations and the persistence length), thereby influencing the degree of phase separation. Through simulations of block copolymers with distinct groups of hetero-hierarchical loop anchors, we successfully reproduce changes in phase separation across diverse cell lines, under fixed interaction parameters. These findings, in qualitative alignment with Hi-C data, suggest that the variations of loop constraints alone possess the capacity to regulate higher-order structures and the gene expressions of interphase chromatins.
