Teaching reform and exploration of pharmacology under the background of "double first-class" construction

Pharmacology is an important professional basic course in medical colleges and universities. With the rapid development of medical research, it is imperative to reform the traditional teaching philosophy and teaching methods of pharmacology. Based on the new demand of medical education and the new characteristics of medical education under the background of "double first-class" construction, this paper reforms the teaching content, teaching philosophy and teaching methods in the teaching process of Pharmacology, constructs a teaching reform plan that is student-centered, aims at scientific research innovation, and focuses on cultivating students' independent learning and learning interest, so as to promote the integration of science and education, It will help to cultivate a large number of high-quality medical talents for health care.

Problems and Challenges of Medical English Language Education in Kyrgyzstan

The article delves into the challenges international medical students in Kyrgyzstan face, particularly in Englishlanguage-based programs. With a surge in demand for medical education in the country, the article explores the conventional and unconventional factors affecting the experiences of these students. It addresses issues such as the difficulty of adapting to an unfamiliar education system, external factors complicating adaptation, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study based on narratives from 250 international medical students, highlights the challenges of transitioning to life in Kyrgyz higher education. It emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive student body organization and fostering inclusivity between international and local students. In conclusion, this article aims to call for reforms and improvements to enhance their educational and personal experiences. It highlights the need for collaboration with experts to ensure a stronger education system and improved student support.

Tourniquets, types and techniques in emergency prehospital care: A narrative review.

Massive uncontrolled hemorrhage is an important cause of preventable death in trauma. Therefore, applying an arterial tourniquet (TQ) is recommended as a pre-hospital measure to control bleeding after severe traumatic bleeding. Limb TQ applies circumferential compression proximally to the injury site to compress the arteries, resulting in blood flow and consequently hemorrhage interruption. The use of commercial tourniquets (C-TQ), which are designed, tested, and registered to control hemorrhages in pre-hospital care, is a consensus. However, they are still uncommon in many prehospital emergency services and the overall level of evidence in most studies is low. This narrative review aimed to characterize the importance of tourniquets use in prehospital emergency care and its application techniques. Furthermore, it proposes to stimulate the development of new devices, more accessible and easier to use, to suggest new directions of studies and medical education demands, with manikin and simulation development.

Medical education, workforce inequalities, and hierarchical regionalism: the University of Lancaster and the unrealised medical school, 1964-68

Part of the justification for the Lancashire and South Cumbria New Hospitals Programme (NHP) is that a modern estateis necessary to attract high quality medical students as an international centre of excellence. Workforce proposals produced by Healthier Lancashire and South Cumbria (LSC) align this with plans for improved recruitment and retention of doctors. These also relate to efforts at reducing reliance on locums and improving patient access to modern specialist services. This interrelationship between the demands of medical education, workforce inequalities, and the organisation of services has a long history which precedes the current NHP proposals. Indeed, it has been a structural feature of the region’s National Health Service (NHS) since 1948. Using the attempt by the newly founded University of Lancaster to obtain a medical school from 1964 to 1968, this paper demonstrates the compounding relationship between medical education, workforce inequalities and hierarchical regionalism as a process of ‘sedimented governance’ which shapes the limits of future horizons for current health services leaders and the NHP.

RELATION OF EXAMINATION PERFORMANCE AND CLASS ATTENDANCE OF MBBS STUDENTS IN PHARMACOLOGY - A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

Introduction: Students attendance is considered as an important factor in the academic performance of medical students. Student attendance is an integral part of professional development and, from a regulatory perspective, considered evidence of professionalism.Aim of the undergraduate medical education is to produce competent doctors with adequate medical knowledge, affective attitude for the patients and proper clinical skills for practice Medical education demands high attendance for good understanding and grasps over the subject Aim: To study the relationship between student attendance and their performance in theory examination. Study design: A retrospective study was conducted among Second year MBBS pharmacology students. Student classroom (theory) attendance was compared with their marks secured in the internal assessment conducted by the pharmacology department. Materials and method: The second year MBBS students who attended pharmacology internal assessment were included in the study. The attendance of a total of 145 students was compared with their internal assessment marks. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA. Results: Among 145 students more number of students attendance lied between 61-70 percent.Only 2 of them got more than 90 percent attendance, in this one got below 50 percent marks and6 of them got less than 50 percent in both marks and attendance. Discussion: This study clearly demonstrated that the higher the percentage of attendance lesser is the chance of failure in theory internal assessment (P value is 0.002). It shows attending the theory lectures is significant to perform in the examinations.

Transitivity processes in the field of higher medical education in the risk environment

The article deals with transitivity processes in the field of higher medical education. Several trends related to transitivity processes are highlighted: the high demand for medical education with a shortage of qualified specialists; the continuing medical education and the introduction of an accreditation exam; the introduction of distance technologies, simulation and e-learning; specialist mobility. Thus, the educational process in the context of transitivity processes in the field of medical education should be focused on the formation of self-improvement skills, self-education. The article describes the functions of the students’ independent work in a medical university and the conditions that increase the effectiveness of the educational process. The article defines the role of the organization of student’s independent work in the development of self-education and self-improvement skills. The student’s independent work is considered as one of the forms that allow students to develop self-education and self-improvement skills, taking into account their abilities. The independent work as a form of self-improvement is aimed at developing the skills of independent search and choice of problem solutions; developing the skills of information analysis when working with a large volume of educational material; provides the development of critical thinking skills; stimulating the skills of evaluative and reflexive activity in the context of dynamic changes in the professional sphere.

Comparative assessment of stress among medical students in relation to ABO blood groups

Background: Stress is a term that refers to the sum of physical, mental, and emotional strains or tensions on a person. Medical education can impose significant psychological stress on undergraduates. Considerable degree of psychological morbidity has been reported among medical students ranging from stress, interpersonal problems, and suicidal ideation to psychiatric disorders and they tend to have greater psychological distress than the general population. The academic demands of medical education are placed on students at the time of their life when they are also involved in issues related to lifestyle and careers. There is very limited data available as of on Indian population regarding the link between stress and ABO blood groups. Aims and Objective: The aim of the study was to compare stress levels in students with different ABO blood groups. Materials and Method: Blood grouping was done. The medical student stressor questionnaire (MSSQ), a validated instrument, was used to identify levels of stress in medical students. The items in MSSQ represent 20 possible sources of stress in medical students identified from the literature grouped into six main domains: Academic related stressor, intrapersonal and interpersonal related stressor, teaching and learning related stressor, social related stressor, drive and desire related stressor, and group activities related stressor. Data collected were analyzed using SPSS version 23. AS Descriptive analysis of levels of stress in all six domains in relation to blood groups was presented as frequency and percentages using ANOVA. Results: No statistical significant difference was found in stress levels in students with different blood groups. Conclusions: The study showed that students with different blood groups have the same levels of stress.

Faculty development in medical education is a process through which medical school faculty works systematically to improve their competency as teachers. It helps improve and develop skills in teaching, research, curriculum development, development of assessment tools, leadership qualities, mentoring and promotion of the scholarship of teaching (Harden & Crosby, 2000). High quality faculty development programs will result in competent faculty who can not only inspire and nurture students and prepare them to deliver high-quality health care, but also cultivate a culture of continued self and institutional development (Steinert & Mann, 2006). Faculty development in medical education has gained much significance in the South East Asian region (SEAR) due to a multitude of reasons, including the increasing number of medical schools, increased demand for medical education, competition among medical schools and emphasis on quality assurance and accreditation (Srinivas & Adkoli, 2009).

Aprendizagem Híbrida na Educação Médica: uma Revisão Sistemática

RESUMO A Aprendizagem Híbrida vem sendo considerada importante na educação médica, mas ainda não está estabelecido quando e qual a melhor forma de incorporá-la. Realizamos uma revisão sistemática sobre o tema, do período de janeiro de 2000 a outubro de 2013. A maioria dos artigos foi publicada nos últimos cinco anos e constitui relatos de experiências de curta duração, na graduação, em áreas clínicas, apresentando ampla diversidade de métodos instrucionais e apresentações, bem como de processos de avaliação de eficácia e de resultados, em geral, limitados à avaliação da reação dos alunos e da aprendizagem. Até o momento, não se pode afirmar que a Aprendizagem Híbrida supere o ensino presencial, assim como não é possível esclarecer muitas das questões ainda em aberto sobre o seu uso na educação médica. É necessário difundir o conceito de Aprendizagem Híbrida para além da simples incorporação de tecnologias no ensino presencial, bem com desenvolver agendas de pesquisa especificamente para esta modalidade de ensino, no sentido de definir sua real contribuição, assim como métodos instrucionais mais adequados aos diversos cenários e demandas do ensino médico.

The widening gap between clinical, teaching and research work

Demand for medical education is increasing, and clinicians are struggling to maintain involvement in teaching and research activities. The settings of clinical training are changing and diversifying. The traditional model of medical education and the sustainability of academic medicine are under strain. Better support is required to ensure continued integration of research and education with clinical activities. Better coordination is required to overcome fragmentation within the medical education system, to ensure appropriate recognition for teaching and research across all clinical settings.

Cognitive and learning styles in medical education.

In this paper, the author describes the three types of styles (affective, learning, and cognitive) that play roles in education and outlines the history of cognitive- and learning-style research. She then explores the range of ways learning styles can be applied in medical education, including ways to use information about students' learning styles to help them cope with the challenges of content mastery and professional socialization; to offer assistance to students coping poorly with the demands of medical education; and to shape efforts to recruit students from underrepresented racial and cultural groups.

A model for faculty practice teaching clinics developed at the Oregon Health Sciences University

In 1988 the Oregon Health Sciences University established its first faculty practice teaching clinic wherein physicians in training were incorporated into a faculty private practice clinic; this pilot project proved very successful and has been subsequently adopted as the model for essentially all outpatient clinics (both medical and surgery) in the university system. The model encourages efficiency, overhead control, and appropriate staffing; it also compensates faculty members for their additional time spent teaching. The authors conclude this model may help other academic training centers adapt to the changing demands of medical education.
