Aim. To study the state of the prooxidant-antioxidant blood system in children with community-acquired pneumonia. Material and methods. A study of the prooxidant-antioxidant system of the blood in 100 children aged 10 to 17 years with community-acquired pneumonia was carried out. Results. It was found that community-acquired pneumonia in children is accompanied by a decrease in antioxidant protection and a significant increase in lipoperoxidation processes, depending on the type of pneumonia. Conclusions. The development of oxidative stress, accompanied by an increase in pro-oxidants in the blood and a decrease in antioxidant protection factors, is one of the important and significant pathogenetic mechanisms of community-acquired pneumonia in children.

Morphofunctional changes in the small intestine in acute adhesive small bowel obstruction

Aim: To study the features of morpho-functional changes in the small intestine mucosa in acute adhesive small bowel obstruction.Material and methods. The results of a comprehensive study of morphological and functional changes in the small intestine’s mucous membrane in 20 patients out of 50 with acute adhesive small intestinal obstruction were analyzed. Patients underwent resection of the small intestine with a biopsy from the mucous membrane, followed by a pathomorphological and biochemical examination of biopsy specimens.Results. The study results show that more pronounced pathomorphological changes in the mucous membrane of the small intestine were observed in patients with acute adhesive small intestinal obstruction with widespread (multiple) adhesions compared with limited (single) adhesions. In the study of biochemical parameters in the small intestine mucosa in patients with acute adhesive small intestinal obstruction with the presence of multiple (widespread) adhesions, there was a significant and critical increase in lipid peroxidation and proinflammatory cytokines, a decrease in antioxidant protection compared to the patient group with the presence of single (limited) adhesions. There was also a decrease in the concentration of serotonin in the mucosa of the small intestine. In the presence of single (limited) adhesions in these patients, it decreases to 0,50±0,3 units, and in patients with multiple (common) adhesions - to 0,20±0,2 arb. units.Conclusion. The severity of morpho-functional changes in the mucosa of the small intestine directly correlates with the severity of the development of the adhesive process and acute adhesive small bowel obstruction.

Comorbidity as a factor initiating a shift in the microelement composition of saliva

The comorbidity of diseases reflects the mutual influence of pathological conditions of individual organs and systems of the body, which requires taking into account the current state of the patient. The presence of comorbidity in modern dentistry is one of the important problems that require attention in diagnosing a patient's condition, selecting treatment tactics and predicting the results of interventions. The possibility of diagnosing concomitant diseases by changing the microelement composition of saliva makes it possible to more effectively determine their presence, the severity of the existing concomitant pathology and determine the optimal treatment tactics.Trace elements contained in saliva regulate a number of biological processes, and their level reflects the state of homeostasis of the oral cavity, and in systemic diseases, the composition of saliva has a strong correlation with blood plasma and, therefore, can reflect the state of health of the body.There are both comorbidity of exclusively dental pathology, and comorbidity of dental diseases with other somatic pathologies. At the same time, the determination of changes in the microelement composition of saliva may indicate the development of inflammatory processes both in the oral cavity and in the body as a whole, a decrease in antioxidant protection, damage to enzyme systems and ion channels, pathological changes in mucous membranes, etc. . The possibility of analyzing the microelement composition of saliva in assessing the comorbidity of a patient's comorbidities seems to be a promising area of research in modern dentistry.

Спіруліна в оздоровленні дітей з підвищеним рівнем свинцю в крові

Introduction. According to literary data, almost one in three children in the world has a blood lead concentration (BLC) of more than 5μg/ dL. This value is the threshold for initiating clinical intervention according to WHO recommendations. At this BLC threshold (referred to as the ‘public health intervention concentration’) public health action is recommended in the USA, Australia, France, England. In Ukraine, there are no programs of this scale yet. Scientific work in this direction is rare. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of spirulina in improving the metabolic status in Ukrainian children with elevated BLC. Materials and methods. 33 random children aged 7 to 15 years were examined. The lead content in venous blood was detected by atomic absorption spectrometry with electrothermal atomization. Indicators of morphological and biochemical blood tests were determined by generally accepted methods. Results. About 30% of the children had BLC ≥ 5μg/dL. They had a lower content of hemoglobin and red blood cells, activation of lipid peroxidation processes and a decrease in antioxidant protection reserves compared to children with lower BLCs. According to the WHO recommendations, the children with BLC ≥ 5μg/dL underwent nutritional intervention. As a nutritional supplement, spirulina was used according to the scheme: the first 10 days – 0.5 g 2 times a day, then 1 g 2 times a day for another 20 days. As a result, BLC significantly decreased from 7.56±0.20 to 6.26±0.57 μg/dL, hemoglobin increased from 126.91±2.15 to 137.46±1.46g/L, blood red cells increased from 4.02±0.07 to 4.39±0.05 T/L. The content of diene conjugants decreased from 20.46±1.71 to 13.82±1.27 μmol/L, and the number of sulfhydryl groups increased from 0.93±0.15 to 1.40±0.11μmol/L. The thiol-disulfide ratio increased 1.7 times. Conclusions. Spirulina contributes to the removal of lead from the body and helps to improve the metabolic status in children with elevated BLC. This allows us to recommend this dietary supplement for the rehabilitation of children undergoing environmental lead pressure.

ДИНАМИКА МАРКЕРОВ ФУНКЦИИ ЭНДОТЕЛИЯ, ПРО- И ПРОТИВОВОСПАЛИТЕЛЬНЫХ ЦИТОКИНОВ В ЗАВИСИМОСТИ ОТ ВЫРАЖЕННОСТИ ХРОНИЧЕСКОЙ ДЫХАТЕЛЬНОЙ НЕДОСТАТОЧНОСТИ У ПАЦИЕНТОВ С ХРОНИЧЕСКОЙ ОБСТРУКТИВНОЙ БОЛЕЗНЬЮ ЛЕГКИХ

The publication is devoted to the study of markers of endothelial function, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease depending on the severity of chronic respiratory failure and disorders of arterial blood hemoglobin oxygen saturation. The authors established a decrease in the activity of cellular immunity, insufficient activation of humoral immunity, decrease in antioxidant protection and anti-inflammatory activity of the immune system. Signs of the key link in the development of atherosclerosis – endothelial dysfunction – were revealed in patients with COPD. The results of the study suggest that the degrees of chronic respiratory failure are interrelated with the stages of atherosclerotic process development. Disturbances of hemoglobin saturation of arterial blood with oxygen and pronounced degrees of chronic respiratory failure are considered as factors contributing to the stage of atheromatosis, which underlies the formation of unstable atherosclerotic plaque.

Состояние антиоксидантной защиты организма игроков в хоккей с шайбой в ходе спортивного сезона

Excessive formation of free radicals and active forms of nitrogen damages enzymes, proteins, membrane phospholipids, nucleic acids. The indicators of the antioxidant defense of the body of professional ice hockey players were evaluated under oxidative and nitrosive stresses of various degrees during the game season. In blood samples of hockey players (n = 39), taken after 2.5 months, 4 and 6 months. games were determined by glutathione (total, reduced, oxidized), nitric oxide. Oxidative stress was ranked according to the levels of peroxides, the state of the antioxidant system — according to decomposed exogenous peroxide. Cortisol and testosterone were evaluated. Total glutathione exceeded the reference standards. Reduced and oxidized glutathione (below 10 units) indicated a decrease in antioxidant protection within 4 months. Nitric oxide increased to 71.6–103.2 μM / L; nitrosive stress was detected in 38.5 %. Testosterone was within normal limits, cortisol was higher in 80.0–95.8 %. Average oxidative stress was detected in 20.7 %, high — in 4.0 %; the antioxidant capacity of the whey is medium to high. Total and reduced glutathione, peroxides, and decomposed peroxide confirmed the significant compensatory reserves of the body. The metabolism was dominated by catabolic processes. The periods of maximum growth of the level of cortisol (2.5–4 months of games) corresponded to the minimum levels of the body’s antioxidant defense; individuals with signs of nitrosive stress were registered. This has proven to be a health risk of exercise in athletes. The condition for the prevention of dysadaptation shifts is the optimal level of stress at the stages of the playing season, as well as ensuring the high-quality composition of the diet. Оцінювання ефективності комплексної цитопротективної терапії вагітних із затримкою росту плода

The objective: estimate efficiency and influence of complex, cytoprotective therapy of pregnant women with fetal growth delay on biochemical indexes and results of delivery. Materials and methods. 93 women with monocyesis at term of 28-34 gestation weeks took part in the research. Group І includes 30 pregnant women with fetal growth delay (FGD). The pregnant women of the present group were prescribed with complex, cytoprotective therapy. It includes prescription of thiotriazolin in complex with L-arginine and diosmin. Group ІІ is presented by 33 pregnant women with FGD whose management of pregnancy and delivery is provided by valid orders of Ministry of Healthcare of Ukraine. Group ІІІ (the control one) consists of 30 pregnant women without FGD. Research of protein oxidative modification (POM) markers and level of stable nitrogen oxide metabolites (NO) were estimated in blood serum with spectrophotometric method. Reduced glutathione (GSH) was determined with calculation of its level according to the calibration curve. Results. Primary estimation of their content showed statistically valid (p < 0.05) lower GSH and NO in comparison of indexes of pregnant women without FGD (ІІІ group) with indexes of pregnant women with FGD (both І and ІІ groups). This fact indicates decrease of antioxidant protection and deficit of the main vessel dilator in the present group. Further estimation of biochemical indexes in dynamics of pregnancy permitted to determine considerable progress of imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants and absence of significant changes of NO level among pregnant women of II group. In pregnant women of I group who got the proposed complex cytoprotective therapy, on contrary, statistically valid (p < 0.05) decrease of POM indexes together with increase of GSH and NO level that indicates its positive influence were found. By means of analysis of special features of the pregnancy course in research group there was stated that the rate of habitual pregnancy non-carrying (HPN) in group II made 39.4% and considerably exceeded relevant indexes of І (20.0%) and ІІІ (16.7%) groups. Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and labour are diagnosed only in pregnant women of І (6.7%) and ІІ (9.1%) groups. Average index of giving birth in І and ІІІ groups made 38.5±0.6 weeks and 39.4 ± 0.5 weeks correspondingly and in group ІІ it was lower 37.2±0.6 weeks. Index of preterm delivery (PD) rate in І group made 3.3% and was 6 times lower than appropriate index of ІІ group (21.2%). PD rate was absent in ІІІ group. Rate of the fetus distress in ІІ group (18.2%) was 2.7 times higher than the relevant index of І group (6.7%) and in ІІІ group it made 3.3%. Condition of newborns in research groups was estimated under Apgar scale. Both at the 1-st and 5-th minute the general index under appropriate scale was statistically valid (p < 0.05) and lower than in ІІ group as compared to indexes of І and ІІІ groups. During description of perinatal complications there was stated considerable percentage of neonatal encephalopathy and jaundice in ІІ group, namely 33.3% and 36.4% correspondingly. In І group their rate made 10.0% and 3.3%, correspondingly. In structure of perinatal pathology prematurity was in 21.2% of newborns of ІІ group that is 6 times higher than appropriate index of І group (3.3%). Mentioned complications were not determined in ІІІ group. In calculation under weight and height parameters of newborns the rate of FGD in ІІ group was the highest and made 88.6%. Mentioned index in І and ІІІ groups made 60.0% and 10.0%, correspondingly. Conclusion. The proposed complex cytoprotective therapy including combined use of thiotriazolin, L-arginine and diosmin (that considerably increases anti-ischemic, antioxidant and endothelium protective action of complex therapy) in women with fetal growth delay has the positive effect on oxidative-reductive hemeostasis and thiol-disulfide balance of mother-placenta-fetus system. Obstetric and perinatal results of delivery in the present group of pregnant women are characterized by statistically valid (р < 0.05) prevalence of estimation indexes under Apgar scale and correspondingly processes of adaptation as well as results of anthropomorphic measurements of newborns, their weight and height parameters and lower rate of neonatal encephalopathy and delivery of premature babies. Aldosereductase: structure, mechanism of action, biological role and functioning according to normo and hyperglycemia

The review summarizes the literature on the structure, biological role and mechanism of action of aldose reductase at different blood glucose levels. Aldosereductase is the first enzyme of the sorbitol (polyol) pathway to glucose metabolism. In mammals, it is a monomeric protein with a molecular weight of 32–56 kDa, has 347–370 amino acid remainders. Its secondary structure consists of α-helices and β-bends, which alternate in 8 units. The active site of the enzyme is located at the C-terminus of the β-bend and contains a glutathione-binding domain. The active site of aldose reductase consists of two sites: substrate-binding and catalytic. The first is formed mainly by the residues of hydrophilic amino acids, and the second, by hydrophobic ones. The interaction of the enzyme with a coenzyme causes conformational changes in aldose reductase. It is believed that the enzyme functions according to the principle of an ordered “bi-bi” mechanism, that is, the coenzyme binds first, and the oxidized product is released last. The reduction of aldehydes of aldose reductase includes several stages: the interaction of the enzyme with NADPH and the formation of a binary complex, the acceptance of the substrate and the formation of a ternary complex (enzyme-coenzyme-substrate) and the separation of the alcohol-reaction product and the oxidized coenzyme. According to normoglycemia in mammalian cells via the sorbitol pathway, up to 1–3 % of intracellular glucose is restored. Under these conditions, it reduces the content of toxic and reactive aldehydes such as: 4-hydroxy-trans-2-nonenal, malondialdehyde, glyoxal, acrolein and their conjugates with reduced glutathione and carnosine, which are also toxic. Before being excreted from the body, they are reduced by aldose reductase to non-toxic compounds. Thus, the enzyme is one of the components of the body's antioxidant system. Hyperglycemia, which is most pronounced in diabetes, significantly increases the flow of glucose through the sorbitol pathway. The activation of aldosereductase and sorbitol dehydrogenase causes the use of a significant amount of NADPH, which leads to a decrease in antioxidant protection, and the excessive formation of NADH leads to a violation of the ratio of reduced and oxidized forms, known as “pseudohypoxia”. Metabolites of the sorbitol pathway, which are formed in excessive amounts, get toxic effects on metabolism and cellular structures, in particular: sorbitol, as an osmotically active component, causes lens edema, leads to the formation of cataracts, and fructose, fructose-phosphate and 3-deoxyglucasone underlie the pathogenesis of secondary diabetic complications.

Application of indirect electrochemical oxidation of blood in a complex of intensive therapy in children with urolithiasis complicated with chronic kidney disease

Objective. To study the efficacy of sodium hypochlorite in children with urolithiasis complicated by chronic kidney disease (CKD).
 Materials and methods. The results of the use of sodium hypochlorite 0.03-0.06 % in the pre- and postoperative period in 20 patients with urolithiasis complicated by stage IV CKD were analyzed. The indices of endogenous intoxication in venous cubital blood (VСK), mixed venous blood (MVB) flowing to the lungs and arterial blood (AB) flowing from the lungs were studied. Indirect electrochemical oxidation of blood (IEOB) was carried out in 20 patients with stage. For children under 12 years old, we used 0.03 %, and for the older age group from 12 to 18 years old ‒ 0.06 %, the volume of the injected solution did not exceed 1/10 of the patient’s CBV per infusion, at a rate of 40-60 drops/min. We have studied the use of sodium hypochloride (NaCIO) as a component of complex intensive care (CIC) in preoperative preparation in children with urolithiasis complicated by CKD and the effect of sodium hypochloride on detoxification lung function (DLF).
 Results. There was a significant increase in low molecular weight toxic substances (creatinine, calurea), average mass molecules (AMM), lipid peroxidized products, oligopeptides of a high necrotic body mass (NB), circulating immune complex (CIC), integral indicators of toxicity leukocyte index of intoxication and index of intoxication, as well as a decrease in antioxidant protection, more pronounced at sub- and decompensated stages of DLF impairment in the examined group of patients before treatment in the basin of VKK, VCK and AB. In 7 (35.0 %) patients ‒ 1b compensated, in 13 (65.0 %) ‒ subcompensated stage of impairment.
 Conclusions. CIC with the use of IEOB in the preoperative preparation by infusion of sodium hypochlorite in this subgroup of patients significantly improved DLF in relation to NB, CIC and high-weight oligopeptides. The use of NaCIO leads to inactivation of the entire spectrum of AMM and large toxic molecular compounds fixed on the membranes of blood corpuscles, and also, ensures the transformation of hydrophobic metabolites into hydrophilic ones, which are actively excreted by excretory organs.

Adaptogenic correction of free radical brain damage in subchronic exposure to sodium fl uoride

Introduction. Fluorine compounds in small doses, but with prolonged exposure, cause various disorders in organs at the cellular and molecular levels. Activation of free-radical processes plays an important role in the damaging eff ect of fl uorides. Th erefore, one of the most eff ective ways to limit fl uorine-induced damage is to directly aff ect free-radical processes using herbal preparations with antioxidant properties.The aim of the study is to study the eff ect of a dihydroquercetin-based drug on the activity of free radical processes in brain tissue under subchronic exposure to sodium fl uoride (NaF).Materials and methods. Th e work was performed on white male laboratory rats weighing 200-250 g. Th e rats were divided into 3 groups: 1 — control; 2 — rats with chronic exposure to sodium fl uoride (NaF) for 9 weeks; 3 — rats receiving a NAF solution with simultaneous administration of a complex drug based on dihydroquercetin at a dose of 3 mg/kg in 1% starch gel for 3, 6 and 9 weeks. The activity of free radical oxidation and antioxidant defense enzymes — superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase-was determined in the cerebral cortex. Th e level of expression of hypoxia-induced transcription factor HIF — 1A and inducible forms of proteins HSP72 and HSP32 were determined in the cytosolic fraction of brain tissue.Results. In the early stages of subchronic fl uoride exposure (1-3 weeks), the expression of protective proteins HIF-1α, HSP72, HSP32 and catalase was shown in the rat cortex, as a result of which the activity of free-radical processes was maintained at the control level. An increase in the timing of fl uoride intake to 9 weeks led to a decrease in antioxidant protection and signifi cant activation of free radical oxidation in brain tissue. Daily administration of a complex drug with dihydroquercetin for 3, 6 and 9 weeks to rats with subchronic fl uoride exposure led to a decrease in the severity of pro- and antioxidant balance disorders in the cerebral cortex. At the same time, the greatest protective eff ect of dihydroquercetin with fl uoride exposure was manifested by the 9th week of its administration.Conclusions. When subchronic intake of fl uorides in the body, the drug based on dihydroquercetin has a neuroprotective eff ect, which is manifested by an increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes of fr ee radical oxidation and catalase and the resistance of the cortex to induced fr ee radical oxidation.

Features of the relationship between cone-beam computed tomography and the severity of oxidative stress in chronic generalized periodontitis with and without bronchoectatic disease

The study identified and analyzed the relationship between cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and markers of oxidative stress in patients with chronic generalized periodontitis (CGP) without somatic pathology and with bronchoectatic disease. 90 patients with CGP were examined, which were divided into two groups: patients with CGP without somatic pathology (n=40) and patients with CGP with comorbid pathology in the form of bronchiectatic disease (n=50). Somatically healthy persons with intact periodontal disease (n=40) were examined as a control group. Enzyme immunoassay was used to determine the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and total superoxide dismutase (total SOD) of all three types — Cu/Zn-SOD + Mn-SOD + Fe-SOD) in oral fluid. In patients with CGP observed intensification of oxidative stress expressed in an increase in oxidation products of lipids and proteins, as well as a decrease in antioxidant protection. Greater intensification of the process of oxidative stress and deeper changes in periodontal tissues were detected in patients with CGP with bronchiectatic disease. According to the results of correlation analysis, statistically significant, positive relationships of different strength between changes in the level of MDA, AOPP, total SOD and CBCT parameters in patients with CGP, both without somatic pathology, and with bronchiectatic disease were revealed. The revealed interrelations evidence of the influence of the intensification of the process of oxidative stress on a condition of periodontal tissues at patients with CGP. The strength of the identified relationships between most of the indicators characterizing CB CT deep periodontal lesions was greater in patients with CGP with bronchiectatic disease.

Obesity, reproduction and oxidative stress

The prevalence of obesity and overweight is one of the most pressing problems nowadays. Obesity as a comorbid condition affects all body systems. Obesity has been reported to be a risk factor not only for cardiovascular diseases and oncopathology, but also for fertility problems, many obstetric and perinatal complications worsening the maternal and infant health. The balance between the oxidative and antioxidant system is one of the indicators of the state of human homeostasis. Today it is proved that obesity is associated with an increase in oxidative stress and a decrease in antioxidant protection. This review reveals a close relationship between obesity, oxidative stress and reproductive problems.

Effect of ingestion of microwaved foods on serum anti-oxidant enzymes and vitamins of albino rats

The effect of ingestion of microwaved foods on serum antioxidant enzymes and vitamins in albino rats was investigated. In the study, thirty two (32) male wistar albino rats were obtained and grouped into four groups (A, B, C and D) of eight animals each. The animals were acclimatized for 7 days on commercial rat feed. The animals in groups B, C and D were all fed ad libitum with porridge yam, porridge beans and jellof rice with meat/fish reheated for 2 min, 4 min and 6 min for groups B, C and D respectively for 42 days. Group A was fed with un-microwaved food and water for the duration of the study (42 days) and served as control. Antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) activities, vitamins A and E concentrations were determined using standard methods. Result obtained from the study showed that microwaved food consumption resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in SOD and CAT activity in rats fed with the microwaved food. Furthermore, antioxidant enzyme activity were more significantly (P < 0.05) reduced in rats exposed to food microwaved for 6 min compared to the control group (A). Also, serum vitamins A and E concentrations were significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in rats fed with food exposed to microwaves for 6 min as compared to the control group. Microwaves and increased microwaving time resulted to a significant reduction in SOD, CAT, vitamin A and E in fed rats. Therefore our study demonstrated that consumption of microwaved foods resulted in a significant decrease in antioxidant protection and may be implicated in the pathogenesis of oxidative stress and degenerative diseases.

Peculiarities of process es of lipid peroxidation, antioxidant defense and cytolisis in the conditions of an acute gastric ulcer and their correction

&lt;p&gt;Modeling of an acute gastric reflex ulcer is accompanied by lipid peroxidation intensification of processes in the&lt;br /&gt;liver tissue (increased content of TBA-active products and diene conjugates) and decrease of antioxidant protection&lt;br /&gt;(reduced content ceruloplаzmin serum and total blood peroxide activity). Application on the background of an acute&lt;br /&gt;gastric reflex ulcer of Thiotriazoline for seven days at a dose of 9.07 milligram per kilogram of animal intraperitoneally&lt;br /&gt;eliminates the found violations and is accompanied by a strong anabolic effect which manifests accumulation of&lt;br /&gt;SH-groups in the liver tissue.&lt;/p&gt;

Glucocorticoid receptor knockdown decreases the antioxidant protection of B16 melanoma cells: an endocrine system-related mechanism that compromises metastatic cell resistance to vascular endothelium-induced tumor cytotoxicity.

We previously reported an interorgan system in which stress-related hormones (corticosterone and noradrenaline), interleukin-6, and glutathione (GSH) coordinately regulate metastatic growth of highly aggressive B16-F10 melanoma cells. Corticosterone, at levels measured in tumor-bearing mice, also induces apoptotic cell death in metastatic cells with low GSH content. In the present study we explored the potential role of glucocorticoids in the regulation of metastatic cell death/survival during the early stages of organ invasion. Glucocorticoid receptor (GCR) knockdown decreased the expression and activity of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS), the rate-limiting step in GSH synthesis, in metastatic cells in vivo independent of the tumor location (liver, lung, or subcutaneous). The decrease in γ-GCS activity was associated with lower intracellular GSH levels. Nrf2- and p53-dependent down-regulation of γ-GCS was associated with a decrease in the activities of superoxide dismutase 1 and 2, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase, but not of the O2 −-generating NADPH oxidase. The GCR knockdown-induced decrease in antioxidant protection caused a drastic decrease in the survival of metastatic cells during their interaction with endothelial cells, both in vitro and in vivo; only 10% of cancer cells attached to the endothelium survived compared to 90% survival observed in the controls. This very low rate of metastatic cell survival was partially increased (up to 52%) in vivo by inoculating B16-F10 cells preloaded with GSH ester, which enters the cell and delivers free GSH. Taken together, our results indicate that glucocorticoid signaling influences the survival of metastatic cells during their interaction with the vascular endothelium.

Стаття присвячена дослідженню показників перекисного окислення ліпідів (ТБК-активних продуктів, гідроперекисів ліпідів, дієнових кон’югат) і антиоксидантного захисту (супероксиддисмутази, глутатіонпероксидази, вітамінів А і Е) у крові новонароджених на синхронізованій переміжній вентиляції легень із підтримкою тиском і на спонтанному диханні з постійним позитивним тиском у дихальних шляхах через назальні канюлі. Отримані результати демонструють більш виражену активацію системи перекисного окислення ліпідів у новонароджених на синхронізованій переміжній вентиляції легень із підтримкою тиском. Рівень ТБК-активних продуктів, гідроперекисів ліпідів, дієнових кон’югат у крові перевищує відповідні показники у дітей на спонтанному диханні з постійним позитивним тиском в дихальних шляхах через назальні канюлі в 1,4 раза. Поряд з активацією системи перекисного окислення ліпідів у новонароджених на синхронізованій переміжній вентиляції легень із підтримкою тиском відмічається зниження активності антиоксидантного захисту. Рівень супероксиддисмутази в еритроцитах нижчий в 1,3 раза, глутатіонпероксидази в еритроцитах — в 1,7 раза, вітаміну А в сироватці крові — у 2,8 раза, вітаміну Е в сироватці — у 2,2 раза порівняно з новонаро­дженими на спонтанному диханні з постійним позитивним тиском у дихальних шляхах через назальні канюлі.

Pre and Post-Natal Exposure to Air Pollution is Public Health Problem

3in concentration of PM 10 and 22% in the deaths of neonates by respiratory diseases. The maternal exposure to O 3 in the second and to CO in third month of pregnancy caused a loss in weight of babies [7-10]. Moreover, the pregnant women who inhaled NO 2 during gestational period present an increase of 25% premature delivery [11]. The mechanism that was suggested to clarify the association between CO and the low weight of neonates would be the competition between this gas and O 2 for the sites in hemoglobin, which would decrease the transport of O 2 to the tissues and harm the fetal development. In terms of the association between O 3 and the decrease in neonate weight, animal studies suggested that this effect would be modulated by maternal inflammatory process. The prematurity could be explained through oxidation of proteins and lipids by NO 2 and the decrease of antioxidant protection of fetus and mother. Experimental studies demonstrated that inhalation of NO 2 during gestational period induced the oxidation of lipids, which are components of placenta, and increased the lethality in post-implatantion period of embryo [12]. Gilboa et al. [13] showed the existence of a positive association between the exposure to CO and the Fallot Tetrology (odds ratio: 2,04); between PM 10 and atrial septus defects (odds ratio: 2,27) and between SO 2 and ventricular septus defects (odds ratio: 2,16). Ritz et al. [14] found CO and O 3 inhaled during the second month of pregnancy, which is a critical period for heart development, caused congenital cardiac malformation. Considering the studies which were presented in this editorial, the mechanisms that are involved in injuries caused to air pollution in pre and post-natal periods are not well known. Therefore, there is a necessity to study more and to increase our knowledge about this subject to determine the effects of pollutant inhalation during the gestational period in adult age. Moreover, these kinds of studies are important to create public health policies to decrease the emission of pollutants in atmosphere.

Leaves of Hippophae Rhamnoides Prevent Taste Aversion in Gamma-Irradiated Rats

ABSTRACTHippophae rhamnoides (Sea buckthorn), a traditionally known plant for nutritional and therapeutic values, is under active investigation for radioprotective properties. This study investigated effects of aqueous leaf extract from H. rhamnoides on 60Co-γ-radiation induced changes in behavior, oxidative stress and serotonin levels in jejunum and plasma of rats. Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) was chosen as the assay to record behavioral changes and was assessed in terms of saccharine preference ratio (SPR). Whole body 60Co-γ-irradiation (2 Gy) induced significant nonrecoverable CTA (25.6 ± 3.6% SPR, t(6) = 3.499, p < .05) and loss in body weight (b.w.). One time treatment with leaf extract before irradiation, countered radiation induced CTA and loss in body weight. The 12 mg/kg b.w. concentration of leaf extract caused complete extinction of CTA [100.3 ± 6.4% SPR, t(6) = 5.879, p < .01] after day 3 and the effect was significantly higher than positive control, Ondansetrone (70.0 ± 8.9% SPR). Treatment with leaf extract before irradiation significantly countered radiation induced (1) decrease in antioxidant protection, (2) increase in levels of corticosterone (CS) in plasma, (3) increase in levels of serotonin in jejunum and plasma. Present investigation demonstrated that H. rhamnoides leaf extract prevented behavioral changes induced at clinical radiation doses. Hippophae leaves are nontoxic and are being consumed as tea and other beverages. CTA in rats is a considered parallel process to nausea and vomiting in human beings. These findings, put together, suggest that dietary supplements from Hippophae leaves could be developed for preventing behavioral changes in subjects exposed to radiation.

RETRACTED: Water deficit induced oxidative damage in tea (Camellia sinensis) plants

When the tea (Camellia sinensis) leaf water potential was -1.1 MPa (Moderate water deficit), there was 58% inhibition of photosynthesis accompanied by increased zeaxanthin, malondialdehyde, oxidized proteins and superoxide dismutase activity. When the leaf water potential was -2MPa (severe water deficit), there was nearly complete inhibition of photosynthesis apart from a decrease in chlorophylls, beta-carotene, neoxanthin and lutein. Water deficit at this level caused further conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin, suggesting damage to the photosynthetic apparatus. There were consistent decreases in antioxidants and pyridine nucleotides, and accumulation of catalytic Fe, malondialdehyde and oxidized proteins. It is inferred that, in tea plants, the increase in catalytic Fe and the decrease in antioxidant protection may be involved in the oxidative damage caused by severe water deficit, but not necessarily in the incipient stress induced by moderate water deficit.

Involvement of Activated Oxygen in Nitrate-Induced Senescence of Pea Root Nodules.

The effect of short-term nitrate application (10 mM, 0-4 d) on nitrogenase (N2ase) activity, antioxidant defenses, and related parameters was investigated in pea (Pisum sativum L. cv Frilene) nodules. The response of nodules to nitrate comprised two stages. In the first stage (0-2 d), there were major decreases in N2ase activity and N2ase-linked respiration and concomitant increases in carbon cost of N2ase and oxygen diffusion resistance of nodules. There was no apparent oxidative damage, and the decline in N2ase activity was, to a certain extent, reversible. The second stage (>2 d) was typical of a senescent, essentially irreversible process. It was characterized by moderate increases in oxidized proteins and catalytic Fe and by major decreases in antioxidant enzymes and metabolites. The restriction in oxygen supply to bacteroids may explain the initial decline in N2ase activity. The decrease in antioxidant protection is not involved in this process and is not specifically caused by nitrate, since it also occurs with drought stress. However, comparison of nitrate- and drought-induced senescence shows an important difference: there is no lipid degradation or lipid peroxide accumulation with nitrate, indicating that lipid peroxidation is not necessarily involved in nodule senescence.
