Chemical bowling-assisted synthesis of Fe3O4@starch-derived carbon composites as anode materials with superior cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries

Fe3O4@starch-derived carbon composites (Fe3O4@C-SD composites) were produced via chemical bowling, an economic and a scalable method, and a subsequent calcination with starch as the carbon resource and iron(iii) nitrate as the iron resource.

In situ formed LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2@LiF composite cathode material with high rate capability and long cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries

The electrolyte erosion on the surface of active electrode material is recognized as a critical factor affecting the electrochemical performance of LiNixCoyMn1 − x − yO2 cathode materials. In this study, a LiF-modified LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (LNMC811) cathode material was successfully constructed via wet chemical method by heating treatment. Electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy studies prove that a LiF coating layer (approximately 10 nm) is tightly wrapped on the LNMC811 surface. Consequently, the LiF-modified LNMC811 shows amazing rate capability and wonderful cycling retention, presenting 90% and 75% of the initial discharge capacity at 1 C and 2 C after 100 cycles, respectively, in contrast with 52% capacity retention for bare LNMC811. The wonderful electrochemical property of LNMC811@LiF is caused by the incorporation of the LiF layer which helps to inhibit the deleterious side reactions between the electrolyte and active materials.

Kinetically controlled low-temperature solution-processed mesoporous rutile TiO2 for high performance lithium-ion batteries

Solution-processed nanostructured mesoporous rutile phase titanium dioxides (TiO2) are a fascinating class of materials for energy applications owing to their remarkable properties, including thermal stability. The unique lattice structure of rutile TiO2 (R-TiO2) leads to multifaceted physicochemical properties, which influence its performances. We here report the preparation of mesoporous R-TiO2 via a simple and scalable solution process at a low temperature (<50°C). Kinetically controlled synthesis of mesoporous R-TiO2 with three-dimensional hierarchical sea-urchin-like morphology containing populous one-dimensional nanorods are prepared from the precipitates of our cocktail-like precursor solutions of TiCl4 and CH4N2S. The mesoporous R-TiO2 annealed at 300°C possessing a large surface area manifests excellent energy storage behavior, with a high capacity of 457mAhg−1 for the first discharge cycle, at a current density of 0.2 C in the potential range of 1–3V, as well as a high reversible charge–discharge capacity, high rate performance, and excellent cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries. We anticipate our straightforward wet-chemical method to advance the development of mesoporous TiO2 as a promising candidate for high-performance energy storage and other energy applications.

FeIII chelated organic anode with ultrahigh rate performance and ultra-long cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries

Organic electrodes for rechargeable devices have attracted tremendous attention as a promising alternative in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Unfortunately, most of the reported organic anodes face huge challenges in practical application because of the low reversible specific capacity, poor rate performance, and short cycling life. Herein, we facilely chelated the renewable tannic acid (TA) via ferric ions and generated a novel organic anode material (TA-Fe) using in LIBs for the first time. Benefiting from the chelation between ferric ions and catechol groups, which changes the inherent microstructure of TA and inhibits its dissolution in electrolyte, the TA-Fe anodes exhibit outstanding electrochemical performance including high reversible capacity (1016 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g), excellent rate capability, and ultra-long cycling stability (10.0 A/g over 16000 cycles with a capacity retention of 78.8%). Besides presenting a high-performance organic electrode, we expect this work to inspire the preparation of other organic materials for advanced LIBs.

Review and prospect of Li2ZnTi3O8-based anode materials for Li-ion battery

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are considered as one of the most promising power sources for energy storage system for a wide variety of applications such as personal electronic devices and large-format storage devices. The anode material usually plays a key role in the determination of the safety and cycling stability of LIBs. Among all anode materials, lithium zinc titanate (Li2ZnTi3O8) has been considered as one the most promising anode candidates because it has high theoretical capacity (227 mAh g−1), low working plateau, and excellent thermal and structure stability. However, Li2ZnTi3O8-based batteries always suffer from severe capacity deterioration due to the poor conductivity. Hence, it is necessary to systematically and comprehensively summarize the progress in understanding and modifying Li2ZnTi3O8 anode from various aspects. In this review, we present a general overview of the structural features and the electrochemical behavior of Li2ZnTi3O8. We then offer a comprehensive review of the recent advancements of the breakthroughs in the past decade in the synthesis, doping, and surface coating of Li2ZnTi3O8. At last, we highlight the critical challenges facing us today and future perspectives for further development of Li2ZnTi3O8-based anodes.

A large π-conjugated tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin anode enables high specific capacity and superior cycling stability in lithium-ion batteries.

We demonstrated a novel single molecule - tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) with a large π-conjugated system as a high-performance organic anode of lithium batteries. It was found that this TCPP displayed relatively low solubility (<0.1 mg mL-1) in a 1 M LiDFOB/PC electrolyte, high reversible specific capacity (ca. 1200 mA h g-1 at 358 mA g-1), excellent rate capability (548.4 mA h g-1 at 8 A g-1) and superior cycling performance (capacity retention of 89% after 2500 cycles at 6 A g-1).

In situ formed LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2@Li4SiO4 composite cathode material with high rate capability and long cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries

LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (LNCA) is a highly promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, but the low-rate capability and poor cycling stability of LNCA limit the expansibility of its commercial applications. Herein, Li4SiO4 with a small amount of Al is introduced to modify LNCA by combined wet-chemical and solid-state methods and improve its rate and cycle performance. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HRTEM), and Energy Disperse Spectroscopy (EDS) results confirm that a Li4SiO4 coating layer (2–5 nm) is firmly wrapped on the LNCA surface. The modified LNCA shows surprising rate performance and excellent cycle retention. Specifically, the LNCA material coated with 3 mol% Li4SiO4 displays a discharge capacity of 156.5 mAh g−1 at 10 C and exhibits a capacity retention of 88% after 100 cycles at 1 C rate(2.7–4.3 V). The excellent electrochemical performance of the LNCA@Li4SiO4 is due to the incorporation of the Li4SiO4 layer. This layer enhances the lithium-ion diffusion between electrode and electrolyte and suppresses the side reaction produced by direct contact between the active material and electrolyte during repeated charge–discharge cycles. All these findings indicate the high potential of this material for application in advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Hierarchy Design in Metal Oxides as Anodes for Advanced Lithium‐Ion Batteries

AbstractHierarchical structures are ubiquitous in both animals and plants. The coordination of the hierarchical structures and functions makes living organisms function efficiently. This explains why hierarchical metal oxide (HMO)‐based micro/nanostructures have recently received huge attention as anodes for application in highly efficient lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). Indeed, hierarchy in such micro/nanostructured HMOs offers high specific surface area, stable structure, short path length, and improved higher packing density to improve the reaction kinetics and Li+/e− transport kinetics, resulting in highly enhanced rate capability and cycling stability for LIBs. This report focuses on the hierarchical design from structural, morphological, porous, and component levels to engineer the HMOs as anodes for LIBs. The advantages of micro/nanostructured HMO‐based on three reaction mechanisms (intercalation/deintercalation, conversion, and alloying/dealloying), important challenges ahead, and future perspectives on designing advanced electrode materials for next‐generation high‐performance LIBs are discussed.

Magnesium and silicon co-doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode material with outstanding cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries

The magnesium (Mg) and silicon (Si) co-doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 sample has been obtained by sol-gel method. The effects of co-doping with magnesium and silicon ions on the phase structure, morphology and electrochemistry characteristics of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 are investigated by a series of physico-chemical characterizations. XRD results demonstrate that the magnesium and silicon ions successfully enter into the spinel structure and make the lattice parameter slightly increased. Moreover, the magnesium and silicon ions co-doped sample presents superior cycling stability. When cycled at 0.5 C, this sample still delivers 121 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles with outstanding retention of 98.86%, while the undoped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 sample only exhibits 104.5 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles with low retention of 79.17%. In addition, the Mg2+ and Si4+ co-doped sample shows outstanding rate capability and low charge transfer resistance.

Low-cost and sustainable corn starch as a high-performance aqueous binder in silicon anodes via in situ cross-linking

In situ cross-linked corn starch is used as a binder in silicon (Si) composite anodes for enhancing the cycling stability of lithium-ion batteries. The corn starch binder is in situ cross-linked by maleic anhydride during the fabrication of Si anodes. The cross-linking reaction of corn starch is investigated by infrared spectroscopy, solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. The results show that the hydroxy groups of corn starch react with maleic anhydride to form ester linkages, which eventually form a three-dimensional network structure. The cross-linked corn starch binder significantly enhances the adhesion of the Si/conductive carbon composite on the copper current collector. Peeling test experiments show that the adhesion force of the cross-linked corn starch binder is 4.9 times higher than that of the corn starch binder without cross-linking. Moreover, the cell performance tests show that the Si composite cathode with the cross-linked corn starch binder exhibits a high specific capacity of 3720 mAh g−1 and enhances cycle-life performance. This in situ cross-linking approach underscores the potential of corn starch, which is a low-cost and environmentally sustainable material, as a binder for the Si composite electrodes to improve its electrochemical performance.

Ag nanoparticles promoted LiFePO4F nanospheres cathode with superior cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries

Tavorite-like structure LiFePO4F has been recently studied as potential alternative cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to its outstanding structural stability, abundant resources and remarkable safety. However, its poor electronic conductivity and lithium-ion diffusion coefficient leads to the unsatisfactory cycling stability and rate capabilities of LiFePO4F. Herein, Ag decorated LiFePO4F nanospheres have been synthesized for the first time via a precipitation method with in-situ reduction of Ag+, simultaneously improving electronic conductivity and lithium-ion diffusion coefficient. The Ag nanoparticles with size of ∼10 nm are in-situ grown on the surface of LiFePO4F nanospheres with impressive electrochemical performance. It delivers a high discharge capacity of 148.7 mAh g−1 (very close to the theoretical capacity of 152 mAh g−1) at 0.1 C. It is worth mentioning that the Ag-decorated LiFePO4F nanospheres reveal superior cycling stability. The initial discharge capacities of Ag-decorated LiFePO4F reaches up to 120.3 mAh·g−1 at 0.5 C, and the capacity retention is as high as 96.1% after 300 cycles, which is remarkable higher than that of pure LiFePO4F nanospheres with initial discharge capacity of 110.2 mAh·g−1 and capacity retention of 83.1% after 300 cycles. Furthermore, the Ag-decorated LiFePO4F displays the average discharge potential loss of only 0.7% which is lower than pure LiFePO4F of 4.7% after 300 cycles, and the corresponding specific energy retention ratio of 95.5% which is higher than that of 80.1%.

LiFeTiO4/CNTs composite as a cathode material with high cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries

LiFeTiO4/CNTs obtained via solid state reactions demonstrates a highest initial capacity of 465.7 mA h g−1 and a capacity of 202.4 mA h g−1 can be maintained after 100 cycles at 0.1C.

Assembly of LiMnPO4 Nanoplates into Microclusters as a High-Performance Cathode in Lithium-Ion Batteries.

A novel structure of a carbon-coated LiMnPO4 microcluster through emulsion-based self-assembly has been fabricated to yield a high-performance battery cathode. In this rational design, nanosized LiMnPO4 plates are assembled into microclusters to achieve a dense packing and robust interparticle contact. In addition, the conductive carbon framework wrapping around these clusters functions as a fast electron highway, ensuring the high utilization of the active materials. The designed structure demonstrates enhanced specific capacity and cycling stability in lithium-ion batteries, delivering a discharge capacity of 120 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 0.2 C. It also shows a superior rate capability with discharge capacities of 139.7 mAh g-1 at 0.05 C, 131.7 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C, and 99.2 mAh g-1 at 1 C at room temperature.

Er-Doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O₄ Cathode Material with Enhanced Cycling Stability for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

The Er-doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LiNi0.495Mn1.495Er0.01O4) sample was successfully prepared by citric acid-assisted sol-gel method with erbium oxide as an erbium source for the first time. Compared with the undoped sample, the Er-doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 sample maintained the basic spinel structure, suggesting that the substitution of Er3+ ions for partial nickel and manganese ions did not change the intrinsic structure of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. Moreover, the Er-doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 sample showed better size distribution and regular octahedral morphology. Electrochemical measurements indicated that the Er-doping could have a positive impact on the electrochemical properties. When cycled at 0.5 C, the Er-doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 sample exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 120.6 mAh·g−1, and the capacity retention of this sample reached up to 92.9% after 100 cycles. As the charge/discharge rate restored from 2.0 C to 0.2 C, the discharge capacity of this sample still exhibited 123.7 mAh·g−1 with excellent recovery rate. Since the bonding energy of Er-O (615 kJ·mol−1) was higher than that of Mn-O (402 kJ·mol −1) and Ni-O (392 kJ·mol−1), these outstanding performance could be attributed to the increased structure stability as well as the reduced aggregation behavior and small charge transfer resistance of the Er-doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4.

3D Ordered Macroporous MoS2 @C Nanostructure for Flexible Li-Ion Batteries.

A flexible and robust electrode is demonstrated by assembling the 3D ordered macroporous MoS2 @C nanostructure on carbon cloth with ultrasmall few-layered MoS2 nanosheets homogenously embedded into the interconnected carbon wall. Such unique nanostructures are favorable for enhancing lithium storage capacity, directly applied as a flexible electrode, demonstrating a very high electrochemical performance and superior cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries.

Silica template-assisted synthesis of SnO2@porous carbon composites as anode materials with excellent rate capability and cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries

A kind of porous carbon coated SnO2-based composites was successfully produced under direction of a silica template. The prepared SnO2@PC anodes deliver high specific capacity, excellent cycling durability and remarkable rate capability in LIBs.

Novel Bake-in-Salt Method for the Synthesis of Mesoporous Mn3O4@C Networks with Superior Cycling Stability and Rate Performance.

The commercial applications of Mn3O4 in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are greatly restricted because of the low electrical conductivity and poor cycling stability at high current density. To overcome these drawbacks, mesoporous Mn3O4@C networks were designed and synthesized via an improved bake-in-salt method using NaCl as the assistant salt, and without the protection of inert gas. The added NaCl plays a versatile role during the synthetic process, including the heat conducting medium, removable hard template and protective layer. Because of the homogeneous distribution of Mn3O4 nanoparticles within the carbon matrix, the as-prepared Mn3O4@C networks show excellent cycling stability in LIBs. After cycling for 950 times at a current density of 1 A g-1, the discharge capacity of the as-prepared Mn3O4@C networks is determined to be 754.4 mA h g-1, showing superior cycling stability as compared to its counterparts. The valuable and promising method, simple synthetic procedure and excellent cycling stability of the as-prepared Mn3O4@C networks makes it a promising candidate as the potential anode material for LIBs.

Ag-deposited 3D porous Si anodes with enhanced cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries

Silicon is a promising alternative anode material due to its high theoretical specific capacity. However, the application of silicon is limited by the poor cycling stability associated with its large volume changes during the charging/discharging processes and its low conductivity. Herein, we design and fabricate an Ag-deposited 3D porous Si composite. The 3D channel can effectively buffer the volume change of Si and the deposited Ag can enhance the conductivity of 3D porous Si. So the Ag-deposited 3D porous Si anode exhibits significantly improved lithium-storage performance.
