Degradation and Mechanical Behavior of Fish Gelatin/Polycaprolactone AC Electrospun Nanofibrous Meshes

AbstractWith the increasing interest in biopolymer nanofibers for diverse applications, the characterization of these materials in the physiological environment has become of equal interest and importance. This study performs first‐time simulated body fluid (SBF) degradation and tensile mechanical analyses of blended fish gelatin (FGEL) and polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibrous meshes prepared by a high‐throughput free‐surface alternating field electrospinning. The thermally crosslinked FGEL/PCL nanofibrous materials with 84–96% porosity and up to 60 wt% PCL fraction demonstrate mass retention up to 88.4% after 14 days in SBF. The trends in the PCL crystallinity and FGEL secondary structure modification during the SBF degradation are analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Tensile tests of such porous, 0.1–2.2 mm thick FGEL/PCL nanofibrous meshes in SBF reveal the ultimate tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation at break within the ranges of 60–105 kPa, 0.3–1.6 MPa, and 20–70%, respectively, depending on the FGEL/PCL mass ratio. The results demonstrate that FGEL/PCL nanofibrous materials prepared from poorly miscible FGEL and PCL can be suitable for selected biomedical applications such as scaffolds for skin, cranial cruciate ligament, articular cartilage, or vascular tissue repair.

High‐throughput fabrication, structural characterization, and cellular interaction of compositionally diverse fish gelatin/polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibrous materials

AbstractNanofibers made by blending natural and synthetic biopolymers have shown promise for better mechanical stability, ECM morphology mimicry, and cellular interaction of such materials. With the evolution of production methods of nanofibers, alternating field electrospinning (a.k.a. alternating current (AC) electrospinning) demonstrates a strong potential for scalable and sustainable fabrication of nanofibrous materials. This study focuses on AC‐electrospinning of poorly miscible blends of gelatin from cold water fish skin (FGEL) and polycaprolactone (PCL) in a range of FGEL/PCL mass ratios from 0.9:0.1 to 0.4:0.6 in acetic acid single‐solvent system. The nanofiber productivity rates of 7.8–19.0 g/h were obtained using a single 25 mm diameter dish‐like spinneret, depending on the precursor composition. The resulting nanofibrous meshes had 94%–96% porosity and revealed the nanofibers with 200–750 nm diameters and smooth surface morphology. The results of FTIR, XRD, and water contact angle analyses have shown the effect of FGEL/PCL mass ratio on the changes in the material wettability, PCL crystallinity and orientation of PCL crystalline regions, and secondary structure of FGEL in as‐spun and thermally crosslinked materials. Preliminary in vitro tests with 3 T3 mouse fibroblasts confirmed favorable and tunable cell attachment, proliferation, and spreading on all tested FGEL/PCL nanofibrous meshes.

Nanometric Mechanical Behavior of Electrospun Membranes Loaded with Magnetic Nanoparticles.

This work analyzes on nanoscale spatial domains the mechanical features of electrospun membranes of Polycaprolactone (PCL) loaded with Functionalized Magnetite Nanoparticles (FMNs) produced via an electrospinning process. Thermal and structural analyses demonstrate that FMNs affect the PCL crystallinity and its melting temperature. HarmoniX-Atomic Force Microscopy (H-AFM), a modality suitable to map the elastic modulus on nanometric domains of the sample surface, evidences that the FMNs affect the local mechanical properties of the membranes. The mechanical modulus increases when the tip reveals the magnetite nanoparticles. That allows accurate mapping of the FMNs distribution along the nanofibers mat through the analysis of a mechanical parameter. Local mechanical modulus values are also affected by the crystallinity degree of PCL influenced by the filler content. The crystallinity increases for a low filler percentage (<5 wt.%), while, higher magnetite amounts tend to hinder the crystallization of the polymer, which manifests a lower crystallinity. H-AFM analysis confirms this trend, showing that the distribution of local mechanical values is a function of the filler amount and crystallinity of the fibers hosting the filler. The bulk mechanical properties of the membranes, evaluated through tensile tests, are strictly related to the nanometric features of the complex nanocomposite system.

Alternating field electrospinning of blended fish gelatin/poly(ε-caprolactone) nanofibers

Blended nanofibrous biomaterials from natural and synthetic sources show promise for better biointegration. This study explores high-yield alternating field electrospinning (AFES) of blended cold-water fish skin gelatin (FGEL) and polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibrous meshes with up to 30 wt% PCL at 7.8–14.4 g/h fiber productivity, depending on the composition. FGEL/PCL nanofibers reveal smooth surface morphology and 237–313 nm average diameters after thermal crosslinking. FTIR analysis indicated little FGEL/PCL interaction and notable changes in PCL crystallinity in the crosslinked nanofibers. A 14-days in-vitro analysis shows good cellular viability and nanofibrous FGEL/PCL mesh stability. Results demonstrate that AFES provides efficient, scalable production of blended FGEL/PCL nanofibrous biomaterials with suitable characteristics.

Polycaprolactone/Chitosan Composite Nanofiber Membrane as a Preferred Scaffold for the Culture of Mesothelial Cells and the Repair of Damaged Mesothelium.

Mesothelial cells are specific epithelial cells lining the serosal cavity and internal organs. Nonetheless, few studies have explored the possibility to culture mesothelial cells in a nanostructure scaffold for tissue engineering applications. Therefore, this study aims to fabricate nanofibers from a polycaprolactone (PCL) and PCL/chitosan (CS) blend by electrospinning, and to elucidate the effect of CS on the cellular response of mesothelial cells. The results demonstrate that a PCL and PCL/CS nanofiber membrane scaffold could be prepared with a comparable fiber diameter (~300 nm) and porosity for cell culture. Blending CS with PCL influenced the mechanical properties of the scaffold due to interference of PCL crystallinity in the nanofibers. However, CS substantially improves scaffold hydrophilicity and results in a ~6-times-higher cell attachment rate in PCL/CS. The mesothelial cells maintain high viability in both nanofiber membranes, but PCL/CS provides better maintenance of cobblestone-like mesothelial morphology. From gene expression analysis and immunofluorescence staining, the incorporation of CS also results in the upregulated expression of mesothelial marker genes and the enhanced production of key mesothelial maker proteins, endorsing PCL/CS to better maintain the mesothelial phenotype. The PCL/CS scaffold was therefore chosen for the in vivo studies, which involved transplanting a cell/scaffold construct containing allograft mesothelial cells for mesothelium reconstruction in rats. In the absence of mesothelial cells, the mesothelium wound covered with PCL/CS showed an inflammatory response. In contrast, a mesothelium layer similar to native mesothelium tissue could be obtained by implanting the cell/scaffold construct, based on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemical staining.

Preparation and Mechanisms of Compatible Composite from Water Soluble Starch and Polycaprolactone

Generally, biodegradable composites from hydrophilic biomass such as starch and hydrophobic polymer show poor compatibility. In this work, Polycaprolactone (PCL) diol was used to synthesize PCL diol-based polyurethane prepolymer (PCLPUP), and then the PCLPUP as a compatibilizer was mixed with a mixture of water soluble starch and PCL in an intensive mixer for preparing compatible starch-PCL composites. Structural and morphological analyses showed that the compatibility of the starch-PCL composite was significantly improved due to the existence of the PCLPUP interfacial layer. Consequently, the tensile strength, bending strength and impact strength of the composite were enhanced greatly. Through the thorough purification and separation of starch-PCL composites, it is found that the compatibility mechanism mainly comes from two aspects. On the one hand, during the melting reaction, the PCLPUP formed PCLPUP interfacial layer and coated the water soluble starch filler tightly through urethane linkages. On the other hand, the PCLPUP interfacial layer interacted strongly with the PCL polymer matrix through PCL-PCL crystallinity. Effect of crystallinity and related surface properties on gene expression of primary fibroblasts.

The biomaterial-cells interface is one of the most fundamental issues in tissue regeneration. Despite many years of scientific work, there is no clear answer to what determines the desired adhesion of cells and the synthesis of ECM proteins. Crystallinity is a characteristic of the structure that influences the surface and bulk properties of semicrystalline polymers used in medicine. The crystallinity of polycaprolactone (PCL) was varied by changing the molecular weight of the polymer and the annealing procedure. Measurements of surface free energy showed differences related to substrate crystallinity. Additionally, the water contact angle was determined to characterise surface wettability which was crucial in the analysis of protein absorption. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to indicate oxygen bonds amount on the surface. Finally, the impact of the crystallinity, and related properties were demonstrated on dermal fibroblasts' response. Cellular proliferation and expression of selected genes: α-SMA, collagen I, TIMP, integrin were analysed.

Skin-friendly dressing with alcohols treatment for enhancement of mechanical and biocompatible properties

Background The biocompatibility and mechanical properties are essential for the choice of wound dressing in potential and skin-friendly applications.Methods This study is the first to reveal the feasibility assessment of skin-friendly dressing soaked in different alcohols (e.g., methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, propylene glycol, glycerol, xylitol) with promising physical characteristics.Significant findings The type of silk fibroin (SF) treated with alcohols could be altered from the random coil (silk I) to β-sheet (silk II). The structure of SF (β-sheet) tended to be even stronger, between SF and polycaprolactone (PCL). The composite nanofiber (SF/PCL/CS) soaked in the ethanol increased the crystallinity of PCL and made even stronger interactive crosslinking between SF and PCL to form a solid structure, increasing the elongation by about 30%. Furthermore, the dressing with ethanol treatment had high biocompatibility of up to 90.75%, indicating the high feasibility of the dressing to be applied on the human body. Thus, the composite nanofiber with ethanol treatment was found to be the most appropriate condition to manufacture the skin-friendly dressing for wound dressing applications at joints.

Effects of Polymer Blending on the Performance of a Subcutaneous Biodegradable Implant for HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).

Long-acting (LA) HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can mitigate challenges of adhering to daily or on-demand regimens of antiretrovirals (ARVs). We are developing a subcutaneous implant comprising polycaprolactone (PCL) for sustained delivery of ARVs for PrEP. Here we use tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) as a model drug. Previously, we demonstrated that the release rates of drugs are controlled by the implant surface area and wall thickness, and the molecular weight (MW) of PCL. Here, we further advance the implant design and tailor the release rates of TAF and the mechanical integrity of the implant through unique polymer blend formulations. In vitro release of TAF from the implant exhibited zero-order release kinetics for ~120 days. TAF release rates were readily controlled via the MW of the polymer blend, with PCL formulations of higher MW releasing the drug faster than implants with lower MW PCL. Use of polymer MW to tune drug release rates is partly explained by PCL crystallinity, as higher PCL crystalline material is often associated with a slower release rate. Moreover, results showed the ability to tailor mechanical properties via PCL blends. Blending PCL offers an effective approach for tuning the ARV release rates, implant duration, and integrity, and ultimately the biodegradation profiles of the implant.

Preparation and Characterization of Polycaprolactone / Graphene / Zinc Oxide Composites

Biodegradable composite from polycaprolactone (PCL) and Graphene/zinc oxide (Graphene/ZnO) is studied. The Graphene/ZnO content is at 0.5%, 1.5% in PCL. Neat PCL and composites were characterized by microstructure, mechanical properties and thermal properties. Scanning electron micrographs show that the additive has agglomerated in PCL/Graphene/ZnO. Agglomeration of the filler results in reduced tensile properties of the composite. The result from XRD indicates Graphene/ZnO can improve the crystallinity of PCL. According to the results of buried soil test and analysis, Graphene/ZnO can reduce the biodegradation rate of PCL and make the material more durable. This new biodegradable composite material can be used as a new environmentally friendly material.

Preparation, Characterization and Processing of PCL/PHO Blends by 3D Bioplotting

Abstract Blends of polycaprolactone (PCL) and poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate) P(3HO) were prepared by melt compounding. These immiscible blends exhibited droplet-matrix morphology at compositions up to 30 wt% P(3HO). Even though the addition of amorphous P(3HO) decreased the crystallinity of PCL, the crystallization temperature of the blends increased by 6 to 7 8C. Blends containing up to 30 wt% P(3HO) had higher crystallization rates, and lower crystallization half-times compared to neat PCL. The viscosity of PCL decreased upon addition of P(3HO), making the blends suitable for processing using a 3D bioplotter. Compositions with 10 to 30 wt% P(3HO) were ideal for processing, because of their improved crystallization kinetics, reduced stickiness and good flow properties. Estimation of the interfacial tension by fitting the Palierne model to the linear viscoelastic properties of the blends revealed good compatibility, which gave rise to synergistic effects in the thermal and mechanical properties. The fibres prepared by 3D bioplotting maintained droplet matrix morphology, with finer particle size than the original compounded material. In addition to favourable viscosity and thermal properties, the extruded fibres containing 30 wt% P(3HO) had comparable modulus to the neat PCL, while exhibiting good ductility. These blends may be suitable alternatives to PCL for biomedical applications, because they provide a range of crystallinities, crystallization rates and viscosities.

Self-reinforcing nanoscalar polycaprolactone-polyethylene terephthalate electrospun fiber blends

Blends of polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) - both widely used biocompatible polymers – could have applications in long-term drug delivery. To avoid PCL degradation characteristic of hot extrusion of this blend, we utilize phase separation of PET during electrospinning of PCL-PET blends followed by heating to 120 °C during which the PCL component eliminates porosity. The resulting crystallized PET nanofiber follows the spatial arrangement of the initially deposited electrospun PCL-PET fibers. This increased the modulus of the PCL by 38% while elongation to break and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) remain unaffected. These sintered 25:75 PET-PCL blends maintained their mechanical properties at least three months in 37 °C PBS and >3 months in 37 °C DMSO. Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction confirm that increased brittleness is caused by increases in PCL crystallinity. Controlled phase separation to achieve directed composite formation could utilize other polymers and optimized fiber deposition to catalyze further mechanical property improvements.

Synthesis and characterization of mechanical-controllable polyurethane derived from tetramethybiphenyl epoxy acrylate

In this paper, a novel polyurethane copolymer (PU) derived from hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), polycaprolactone (PCL) and tetramethyl biphenyl epoxy acrylate (TMBPEA) was synthesized, characterized, and designed to have controllable mechanical properties and shape memory ability. The multifunctional PU contains cystallizable PCL segments, cross-linkable CC bonds in TMBPEA and urethane moieties. Both the PCL crystalline phase and photo-crosslinking of CC bonds play an important role in determining the mechanical properties of PU. Therefore, by adjusting the degree of crystallinity and the degree of crosslinking, the mechanical properties of PU could be easily controlled and varied. Before photo-crosslinking, the crystallinity of PU increases from 33.01% to 78.97%, as the content of PCL in PUs increases. However, after photo-crosslinking, the degree of crystallinity was significantly reduced to 11.09% as the UV irradiation time increased. In this way, the mechanical properties of PUs could be readily controlled by adjusting the ratio of PCL in the PUs and varying the UV irradiation time. As the ratio of PCL in PUs increases, the tensile strength and Young’s modulus of PUs increases from 9.04 ± 1.26 MPa to 12.98 ± 0.33 MPa and 89.79 ± 5.74 MPa to 224.88 ± 5.22 MPa, respectively. Meanwhile, the elongation at break increases from 499.09 ± 88.38% to 776.51 ± 67.39%. After crosslinking, the Young’s modulus of UV-cured PUs decreased from 224.88 ± 5.22 MPa to 18.74 ± 1.30 MPa as the UV irradiation time increased. Moreover, the elongation at break of UV-cured PUs was also dramatically reduced to around 60 MPa after photo-crosslinking compared to pristine PUs. Furthermore, shape memory tests indicated that uncrosslinking PUs samples have shape memory ability.

Fabrication and characterization of porous polycaprolactone scaffold via extrusion-based cryogenic 3D printing for tissue engineering

Earlier reports of fabricating 3D porous PCL scaffolds for tissue engineering applications were overshadowed by several limitations such as additional molds cost, relatively low efficiency, and lacking process control. In present study, combined extrusion-based cryogenic 3D printing (ECP) (−20 °C) and subsequent freeze-drying approaches were employed to facilely fabricate polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds, with high porosity and fidelity. Freeze-drying caused shrinkage of the scaffolds along X, Y, and Z-axes to some extent. The porosities of CP600, CP800, and CP1000 were found to be 64.0 ± 1.2%, 70.1 ± 1.3%, and 74.3 ± 0.6%, respectively. The fabricated scaffolds were characterized for various structural features and compared with the ones fabricated through traditional extrusion-based melt 3D printing (EMP). The crystallinity of PCL in ECP scaffolds was lower (57.1 ± 2.2%) than EMP scaffolds (69.8 ± 1.3%). The ECP scaffolds showed high alkaline degradation, but low compression properties. The ECP scaffolds promoted the adhesion and proliferation of MCT3T-E1 cells with well-spread morphology on the porous filaments. Together, these features justify the suitability of printed PCL scaffolds for potential TE applications.

Long-term in vitro degradation behavior and biocompatibility of polycaprolactone/cobalt-substituted hydroxyapatite composite for bone tissue engineering

ObjectiveCurrently, infections due to foreign-body reactions caused by bacteria or implant materials at the wound site are one of the major reasons for the failure of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) and guided bone regeneration (GBR) in clinical applications. The purpose of this study was to develop regeneration membranes with localized cobalt ion release to reduce infection and inflammation by polycaprolactone (PCL)/cobalt-substituted hydroxyapatite (CoHA). MethodsThe PCL composite membrane containing 20 wt% CoHA powders was prepared by solvent casting. The surface morphology, crystal structure, chemical composition and thermal properties of PCL composite membranes were characterized. The biocompatibility, osteogenic differentiation and antibacterial properties of composite membrane were also investigated. Then, in biodegradability was assessed by immersing phosphate buffer solution (PBS) for 6 months. ResultsPhysicochemical analyses revealed that CoHA is evenly mixed in the membranes and assistance reduce the crystallinity of PCL for getting more degradation amounts than PCL membrane. Osteoblast cells culture on the membrane showed that the CoHA significantly increases cell proliferation and found the calcium deposition production increased over 90% compared with PCL after 7 days of culture. A good antibacterial effect was achieved by the addition of CoHA powder. The results were confirmed by 2.4 times reduction of proliferation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) seeded on the composite membrane after 24 h. Immersing in PBS for 6 months indicated that PCL–CoHA composite membrane has improved biodegradation and can continuously remove free radicals to reduce the inflammatory response. SignificanceThe PCL–CoHA composite membrane with suitable releasing of cobalt ion can be considered as a potential choice for bone tissue regeneration.

Multi-layer nanofibrous tubes with dual drug-release profiles for vascular graft engineering

Currently available synthetic grafts demonstrate moderate success at the macrovascular level, but there is still a problem with thrombus formation at the microvascular scale (<6 mm inner diameter). The aim of this study was to fabricate multi-layer drug-loaded polycaprolactone (PCL)/oligomeric proanthocyanidin (OPC) nanofiber tubes with two types of release kinetics to protect against both short- and long-term thrombosis. Multi-layer PCL nanofiber tubes with layer numbers of 2, 3, 5, and 10 were prepared and then their mechanical and OPC release properties were studied. The morphology of the multi-layer tubes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and digital microscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the PCL nanofibers exhibited characteristic peaks. X-ray diffraction measurements showed the crystallinity of PCL. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed the melting temperature of PCL. Finally, the release profiles of the layers with two distinct types of release kinetics were measured. The results indicated that the drug release from the interlayer and electrospun membrane showed separate and distinct profiles. Most of the OPC was released rapidly during the 1.5 h of the trial. In contrast, the release from the nanofibers was sustained for 62 days.

Cefazolin-loaded polycaprolactone fibers produced via different electrospinning methods: Characterization, drug release and antibacterial effect

Antibiotic containing polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers were produced by using three electrospinning methods: blend, emulsion and co-axial electrospinning (labeled as S1, S2 and S3, respectively). The profiles of drug release from three different systems were studied and antimicrobial properties of produced materials were evaluated. Morphology of the produced fibers was characterized and revealed that cefazolin-loaded PCL fibers had smaller diameter compared to neat PCL fibers, while the chemical interaction between the antibiotic and PCL showed that cefazolin neither had reacted with PCL phase, nor had degraded during the electrospinning process. The crystallinity and thermal characterization of fabricated fibers showed that the addition of cefazolin decreased the crystallinity of PCL. The results of the drug release behavior of the blend and co-axial electrospun fibers was on a higher level (~68% and ~43%, respectively) compared to the emulsion electrospun fibers (~5%), after a period of 30 days. The obtained data had the best fitting with the first order model and the Higuchi model, while the Korsmeyer-Peppas model showed a Pseudo-Fickian diffusion of the drug. Antibacterial evaluations showed that cefazolin-loaded PCL fibers had better effects on Staphylococcus aureus compared to Escherichia coli during the treatment period and that the effect of the emulsion fibers was notably weaker than the other two studied systems. The aim of the study was to test different systems for control drug release of different dynamics, which will be applied for prevent bacterial accumulation when indwelling urinary catheters, applied for different periods of time.

Triple-shape memory properties of thermoplastic polyurethane/olefin block copolymer/polycaprolactone blends

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/olefin block copolymer (OBC)/polycaprolactone (PCL) blends (70/20/10 and 50/30/20) were melt-blended to form the first environmental OBC-based triple-shape memory polymer blends. In this work, PCL with low crystalline temperature (switching phase), OBC with medium crystalline temperature (switching phase), and TPU with high crystalline temperature (fixed phase) could form an alternative triple-shape memory polymer (TSMP). Two compatibilizers, OBC-g-glycidyl methacrylate (OBC-g-GMA) and dicumyl peroxide, were confirmed to show a synergistic effect in enhancing the compatibility further through the morphological observation. Crystallinity of both OBC and PCL in the blends with or without modification decreased in comparison with that of pure resin. For dual-shape behaviors, the shape fixing ratio (Rf) and shape recovery ratio (Rr) were up to 96.3% and 91.2% for the GMA and peroxide-modified blends (50/30/20). The higher amount of TPU didn’t give higher recovery ratio, but instead slightly lower Rr due to the morphology difference. For triple-shape behaviors, both TPU/OBC/PCL blend compositions with or without GMA or peroxide modifications gave high Rf(C→B) values in the first fixing stage, but slightly lower values Rf(B→A) in the second fixing stage, especially for (70/20/10) case. On the other hand, a reverse trend was observed for two recovery stages. To enhance the Rf(B→A) in the second fixing stage, higher deformation temperatures were considered, and a measurable increment on Rf(B→A) was attained. Through this subtle adjustment on the temperature difference between high and low deformation temperatures, the theoretical multi-shape memory shape could be readily tailored to meet different applications.

Functionalized Polymeric Membrane with Enhanced Mechanical and Biological Properties to Control the Degradation of Magnesium Alloy.

To achieve enhanced biological response and controlled degradation of magnesium alloy, a modified biodegradable polymer coating called polycaprolactone (PCL) is fabricated by a thermal approach in which the heat treatment neither alters the chemical composition of the PCL membrane nor the rate of magnesium ion release, pH value, or weight loss, compared with the untreated sample. The changes in the crystallinity, hydrophilicity, and oxygen content of heat-treated PCL coating not only improve the mechanical adhesion strength between the coating and magnesium substrate but also enhance the biological properties. Moreover, the thermally modified sample can lead to higher spreading and elongation of osteoblasts, due to the enhanced hydrophilicity and CO to CO functional group ratio. In the analyses of microcomputed tomography from one to four weeks postoperation, the total volume of new bone formation on the heat-treated sample is 10%-35% and 70%-90% higher than that of the untreated and uncoated controls, respectively. Surprisingly, the indentation modulus of the newly formed bone adjacent to the heat-treated sample is ≈20% higher than that of both controls. These promising results reveal the clinical potential of the modified PCL coating on magnesium alloy in orthopedic applications.

Crystallinity of Electrospun and Centrifugal Spun Polycaprolactone Fibers: A Comparative Study

Crystalline properties of semicrystalline polymers are very important parameters that can influence the application area. The internal structure, like the mentioned crystalline properties, of polymers can be influenced by the production technology itself and by changing technology parameters. The present work is devoted to testing of electrospun and centrifugal spun fibrous and nanofibrous materials and compare them to foils and granules made from the same raw polymer. The test setup reveals the structural differences caused by the production technology. Effects of average molecular weight are also exhibited. The applied biodegradable and biocompatible polymer is polycaprolactone (PCL) as it is a widespread material for medical purposes. The crystallinity of PCL has significant effect on rate of degradation that is an important parameter for a biodegradable material and determines the applicability. The results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that, at the degree of crystallinity, there is a minor difference between the electrospun and centrifugal spun fibrous materials. However, the significant influence of polymer molecular weight was exhibited. The morphology of the fibrous materials, represented by fiber diameter, also did not demonstrate any connection to final measured crystallinity degree of the tested materials.
