Thinking Through the Sea. Stranding and Other Metaphors, in Search of Cognitive Alternatives In this article, I would like to consider the comparison of stranding to landcentric cognitive processes that translate into the creation of an impossible world – devoid of water and its potentials, rhythms and cycles immersed in it. I will illustrate this with examples of fresh water and sea hydro-policies (including nuclear trials in the Pacific) and will explore cognitive and activist alternatives proposed by the Polynesian sailors and navigators. I will also use two ambiguous metaphors of a ship and a Polynesian voyaging canoe as an opening for different narrations of the planets’ future in the climate crisis.

The utopian dimension in the philosophy of social betterment in Adam Smith

Abstract Adam Smith does not focus on the creation of an ideal world, but on the understanding that societal changes for the better are an unintentional product of commerce. Furthermore, as if to highlight the concreteness of these changes, he sees population growth as the way to measure this betterment of society.

CHARACTERISTICS OF MODERN FEATURES OF «HYBRID WAR»

The emergence of global universal human solidarity acts as a historical pattern. The operation of this pattern in the process of globalization together with the implementation of the concept of sustainable development is at the very beginning. It is still far from the creation of a single global world, but the movement of the world community towards it has been steadily continuing since the emergence of mankind. It is obvious that the development of military operations, which we are witnessing, has long been not associated with serious breakthroughs in the field of science and technology. These factors act rather as concomitant ones. The basis of superiority on the battlefield is the ability to think strategically, as well as to use non-standard combat techniques, starting not only from the level of weapons and combat effectiveness, but also based on the cultural characteristics and even, in a sense, the mentality of the parties to the conflict. Considering the theoretical and methodological aspects of the problem, in our opinion, it is necessary to set a certain coordinate system to determine the nature and specifics of a hybrid conflict in two planes - directions (economic, military, cultural, international, socio-political, domestic, informational), as well as tools (the strategy of controlled chaos, the doctrine of “soft power”, the doctrine of color revolutions, the theory of reflexive control, the doctrine of unlimited war, the doctrine of rebelliousness, the doctrine of network-centric war, the concept of asymmetric war). Also, referring to applied research, one should take into account the chronological characteristics and specifics of hybrid conflicts, which are segmented within three stages - hidden (latent), semi-open and open.

DYSTOPIAN VISION OF 2052 IN HENLEY’S “SIGNATURE”

Modern drama tends to catch up with the representation of the dystopian alternative worlds much like the contemporary mass culture. Sci-fi and dystopian productions become popular onstage because the medical and technological breakthroughs occur so rapidly in our present-day life that the humanity fails to reflect them properly. There are the following main features pertaining to science fiction in drama, namely dystopian play: fantastical concepts in tune with the modern scientific theory; the illusion of authenticity via scientific methodology; creation of a fictional world on the basis of the factors and tendencies of wide public importance. The aim of this article is to study the generic features of sci-fi subgenre of dystopia on the material of Henley’s drama “Signature” (1990). The play written by the US woman dramatist introduces the world deprived of meaningful lives for its characters whose fake values drive them to grave consequences (death, loss of the beloved). This text for staging warns the audience about the devaluation of human life in favor of elusive success. Henley’s 2052 Hollywood is a dystopic space for rather emotionless characters (the T-Thorp brothers, L-Tip, the Reader), who understand their failures and losses when it is too late. The only exception is William, selfless and unafraid of predicaments. The fundamental for the Western civilization phenomenon of love is distorted and disregarded in favor of immediate satisfaction and addiction to fame. Like her predecessors in sci-fi Henley predicts a mass human alienation in not so distant future. Yet the open end of Boswell’s story somewhat decreases the horror of dystopia – there is a remote chance that after anagnorisis the protagonist will find his beloved and make peace with her even though for a very short time. Henley’s dystopia constructs the ambivalent vision of the future, charged with questions of cryonics, cloning, global digitalization, omnipresent euthanasia, environmentalism and feminism.

КОМПОЗИЦІЙНА СЕМАНТИКА СКЛАДНИХ ЗАПОЗИЧЕНИХ МОВНИХ ФАКТІВ З АНГЛОМОВНИМ ФОРМАНТОМ -ІНГ (на матеріалі української мови)

The article focuses on the problems of formal and semantically complex English borrowings analyzed through the prism of cognitive linguistics and with applying its methodological set of approaches. The authors aimed at making an attempt of systematizing the compositional semantics of the complex language facts and determining their derivative character. This intention is realized through the task to identify the mechanism of transferring the word-building meanings to the recipient language where they gain their new meaning and motivation. It is a general fact that compositional semantics of the derivative word in the donor language is built on the evident language facts (base + formant), they possess their own peculiarities of formal and semantic complex and their own motivated character. They determined the choice of the research methods such as comparative, structural, descriptive and typological approaches applying in our work. In this study we try to determine the import of every borrowed word component into its resulted integrative meaning. Cognitive linguistics is directly related with the process of language processing inside our mind and describes the mechanism of its reflecting and producing into the human speech. This is the reason to apply its tools and develop them in aspect of compositional semantics especially in terms of word formation that we use for proving the facts of transporting the word-building meaning that is contained in a formal and semantic borrowed word complex. Inside the recipient language such a complex opens its word-building abilities including their categories in system of words. The borrowed formal and semantic word complex has to be considered from the different sides and not only on the lexical and thematic level or morphemic and grammatical level but also on the word-building one. The borrowed words of this type should be analyzed on the derivative level too, because it is a derivative complex accepted as a part of speech and formant -ing on some stages of assimilation are considered as word-building element. According to the results of research we proved that any language fact is activated in a process of realization its communicative task and then it uses its formal, semantic and creative tools for expressing “new meaning”. The authors’ idea is that the meaning of derivative words (including borrowed words) is derived in a motivated way from the meanings of their components as well as their form and their semantics. It is resulted by the number of formal and semantic similar borrowings that belong to one word-building range. It is motivated by their word components. The speaker understands this type of word because of its special meaning and pronunciation and reflects it in one’s subjective creative language world. This approach for analysis of borrowed language facts let us formulate the following conclusion: creative reflection of the formal and semantic complex of the borrowed words presented as a complex, not a simplex in a speaker’s mind. This complex contains a formant with determined word-building meaning, in our work it is the transliterated English borrowing with -ing formant into Ukrainian.

The influence of social networks on the formation of the manipulative aspect of political narratives in the postmodern is investigated. With the development of Web 2.0 technologies, Internet users have been able to radically form alternative sources of information alongside the main political actors, to which only the media previously had a monopoly. Today, regular Internet users have access to a simple and affordable way to broadcast their own stories to a global audience. The formation of a political narrative is not only a means of changing the rules of the political game or political consciousness, but also the creation of a certain illusory world, changing the previously formed picture of the world. One of the main aspects in creating a political narrative is to take into account the peculiarities of the national character of the audience among which it is distributed, and the most powerful element determining its success is the appropriate emotional load.

The Role of Myths and Imagination in Cervantes’ Don Quixote and Yaşar Kemal’s The Other Face of the Mountain Trilogy

Dreams can play a liberating role to free individuals from repression and feelings of helplessness in the face of strict social rules, customs and mores. It may not be possible to lead a satisfying life under the overwhelming burden of social facts. As individuals want to be alienated or distanced from the painful effects of social experiences and realities, they resort to the hypnotizing influence of dreams that alleviate their individual and social problems. In Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s Don Quixote and Yaşar Kemal’s Iron Earth, Copper Sky and The Undying Grass, it is possible to witness how imagination shapes human behaviour and subverts social taboos. The creation of another imaginary world by the characters reflects a desire to escape from the delayed confrontation with unwanted social facts. Characters console themselves and reinforce their hopes through imagination, folk tales and false stories. In all three novels, individual freedom and responsibility outweigh restrictive conventional rules and boundaries in society by transcending time and space. Imagination seems to be the only way of liberation from social and personal depression. Both Yaşar Kemal and Cervantes bear the moral discipline to expose their societies through extravagantly insane characters. Don Quixote is trapped in society and its institutions. He fights against institutionalized society through his imagination, just as Kemal’s villagers desperately create stories and believe in them to avoid their oppressive living conditions under the control of domineering people such as Adil and Sefer in The Undying Grass and Iron Earth, Copper Sky. Both Cervantes and Kemal created characters that live in imaginary worlds and resorted to dreams as an important way to blur the line between reality and imagination. Therefore, the aim of this chapter is to explore the effects of imagination and dreams on human behaviour in Cervantes’ Don Quixote and Kemal’s Iron Earth, Copper Sky and The Undying Grass, which are existentialist works centred on individual and social freedom.

LINGUOCULTURAL ORIGINS OF OCCASIONAL UNITS

In this article the influence of linguistic culturology on the formation of occasional newly-coined words has been analyzed. The topicality of the research lies in the linguistic and cultural peculiarities of the appearance of individual author᾽s neologisms which help to outline the features of these innovations in the consciousness of the native English speak- ers. The purpose of the article is to determine the role of the linguocultural influence on the emergence of nonce-words. The objectives of the research are: the definition of the occasional unit and linguistic culturology, the analysis of occasionalisms as the author᾽s creations and the influence of the national language model of the world. The author has tried to prove that the relationship between language and culture is presented as a key one in Modern Linguistics. Linguistic culturology investigates correlation and interference of culture and language. Language is a means of penetrating in a person᾽s mentality and culture. Culture and nation are reflected in the national language model of the world that helps to study the interaction processes of lan- guage, thinking and reality in order to understand the leading role of language in the creation and reflection of the inner world of a human being. The main attention of the research is focused on occasional unit as a formation of a particular author who is a language personality and a constituent of a particular nation. The linguistic culturology is treated as a field of knowledge, which is directly related to the study of occasionalisms. The author of such newly-coined words is a social phenomenon filled with an individual aspect, that is formed through the internal attitude towards the language and the establishment of personal linguistic meanings. It was substantiated that each occasional unit contains definite information indicating the author of the formed innovation that reflects the cultural and historical features of a particular nation. Therefore, the study of the occasional units in terms of national and cultural specificity in our time is relevant and important. It contributes to a better understanding of the culture and thinking of the nation. It should be noted that the influence of the national language image of the world on the formation of occasional vocabulary is significant.

Reading the world anew: Zapatista stories, the denial of singularity, and the creation of a plural world

ABSTRACT This article examines the Zapatista political project for autonomy, and against coloniality and neo-liberalism, through two Zapatista stories, “La historia de los espejos” (“The Story of the Mirrors”, 1995) and “La historia de los otros” (“The Story of the Others”, 1998). It offers a close reading of these stories to show that the language of the Zapatista project emerges at the intersection of literary and political registers, enunciating a discourse of liberation and autonomy where the poetic and the political are intrinsically linked. In these stories, the recreation of the world is realized through two related processes: the critique and disavowal of a singular hegemonic reality and the repudiation of the “universality” of late capitalism. A parallel reconstruction foretells and mythologizes the emergence of a plural world, as captured through the axiom “a world where many worlds fit”.

Comunidade (Gemeinde) entre Lógica e Política nas Lições sobre a Filosofia da Religião de Hegel

This article aims to explain how the political project of State that Hegel outlines in the Philosophy of Right (1821) is recovered by the concept of “community” (Gemeinde) in the Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion (1821-1832) with the use of syllogisms of creation and redemption of world as they are presented in the Encyclopedia of Philosophical Sciences (1830). Once the rational State is grounded on different dimensions of human life, it recognizes them as its own, materializing a viable collective project only when individual freedoms are warranted. According to Philosophy of Right, the effectiveness of the State occurs through the collecting of previous stages concerning the actualization of freedom. It is applied to the will, which paves the way for morality and ethical life. On the other hand, Hegel, in the classes that constitute the Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion, will focus on the concept of “community”. In the same way as the State, the community is also a social arrangement, with its own rites and rules, whose participants acquire a sense of belonging and unity. By evidencing similar purposes to the State, the community's goal is to maintain the group based on a constituted and collectively assimilated order. Whether the community has a political role, therefore, this aspect is best seen when Hegel's political theory is connected with the philosophy of religion in accordance with the elements "freedom", "finite", "infinite", "concept" and “truth" identified in Hegel’s logic.

Incorporation of “Human Values” in all Higher Education Curricula (Technical & Non-Technical) – An inevitable action to eradicate discriminations

This paper argues that the current education system needs a rational and radical change from the objective of materialistic education to humanistic education. Hence, incorporation of human values education (AICTE, 2017) in the modern education system particularly in higher education including both technical and non-technical streams becomes the fulcrum point of this paper. A critical analysis on the Gen Z learners’ aversive mindset towards the current learning routines and education system is presented for discussion. As a remedial approach, a bunch of refreshing rough and ready but pragmatic learning strategies are advocated to nurture them both with human values and employability skills. Even in the scientific/digital era, it is noted with big concern that this civilized nation irrationally exercises discrimination and disparity across the globe. As a remedial action, the teaching fraternity should impart human values education without any compromises because the creation of a better world is only in the hands of rational teachers and compassionate Gen Z students. Finally, this paper places the following question for the perusal of the whole academia, “Which is essential to prepare the Gen Z to stand against all types of discrimination and live a harmonious life: a balanced curriculum inclusive of human values/moral values and competitive skills or a restricted curriculum imparting only technical knowledge and competitive skills excluding human values/moral values?”.

Эпическая картина мира в трилогии Л. Н. Толстого «Детство», «Отрочество», «Юность»

The article is devoted to analysing L. N. Tolstoy’s autobiographical trilogy “Childhood”, “Boyhood”, “Youth” in the context of the formation of the epic leitmotif of his creative world. Scientific novelty of the research is determined by studying the trilogy as the writer’s first epic conception. The aim of the research is to analyse the means of implementing epic worldview and establish a connection between the trilogy and the author’s novelistic work. The attained results have shown that epic nature of the trilogy is contingent on magnitude of creative challenge (to depict different ages as life stages), choice of the protagonist and the type of conflict (a conscientious person, prone to have an analytical outlook on life, seeking the true meaning of life), with its resolution relying upon the protagonist’s progression from “I” towards the world.

Mythological Transformations in the Poem “The Tyger” by William Blake and the Cycle “There Was a Tiger Here” by Gregor Strniša

This article provides an analysis of the background, processes, and functions of mythological transformations found in the poem “The Tyger” by William Blake and the cycle of poems “There Was a Tiger Here” (“Tu je bil tiger”) by Gregor Strniša. It elaborates on the various levels of analogies between the poetic and semantic aspects on the creation of mythopoetic world, along with the specificities revealed in the relations between Blake’s romantic visions and Strniša’s modern perspectives, in the domains for the following aspects: 1. General poetic features; 2. The analysis of symbolic systems; 3. The nature and functions of spatio-temporal relations; 4. The significance of an image of a tiger in the quest for gaining knowledge of divine thought, eternity, transience and death. Therefore, apart from placing emphasis on the significance of Blake’s mystical tendencies, the purpose of this work is to demonstrate that the poetry of Gregor Strniša is ranked among the world’s greatest literature, considering the fact that it is perceived as an original poetic vision which has contributed to the creation of innovations in the context of modern mythological transformations.

Nahmanides’ Disputes with Rashi as a Gateway to His Worldview

Abstract Although he highly praises Rashi’s Torah commentary, Nahmanides emphasizes that Rashi’s work is not beyond criticism. This article points out one aspect of Nahmandes’ disagreement with Rashi. Rashi, for his part, is willing to cite traditional Midrashic commentaries without significant additions, assuming that tradition is an effective tool for transmitting reliable information. Nahmanides argued with Rashi over this claim. Rather than sufficing to repeat exegetical traditions, in his Torah commentary, Nahmanides expands them and raises alternatives. In this way, he asserts the importance of analyzing all information critically. This article demonstrates how reservations regarding tradition stand behind several exegetical and halakhic disputes between Rashi and Nahmanides. Through analyzing this principle, the study demonstrates how Nahmanides, under the guise of a guardian of tradition, constructed an original, creative spiritual world in the areas of exegesis, halakha, and kabbalah.

Biblical motifs in S. Aksakov’s Years of Childhood [Detskie gody Bagrova-vnuka

The article analyzes the biblical motifs and mythopoetic elements in the second part of S. Aksakov’s autobiographical trilogy Years of Childhood [Detskie gody Bagrova-vnuka]. The first experiences of a child in understanding the world are interpreted as ‘living knowledge’ (a term coined by A. Khomyakov). The image of the boy’s wet-nurse represents characteristics of the divine nature, the source of the vital force. The poetic image of ‘the torch of life’ is an allusion to the inextinguishable lamps with which the New Testament’s wise virgins greeted the bridegroom in anticipation of the symbolic wedding feast and life eternal. The chapter ‘First spring in the village’ is written to strongly resemble the biblical account of the Creation of the world, both in style and the manner of artistic associations. The book’s mythopoetic element, enduring imagery, and real-life situations create a unity of the cultural space. The Old and New Testaments’ motifs are depicted to be in natural coexistence. The world is shown through the eyes of a child, with childhood portrayed as a cultural phenomenon.

Потребление в контексте глобализации

The article is devoted to the cultural universalization of consumption in the context of globalization. It is shown that national communities today are not considered as political entities, but rather as economic entities, parts of the consumer market. Globalization leads to the creation of a single world, but not of an open and varied world. This world does not have a pluralistic and cosmopolitan view of itself and others, but, on the contrary, is rather a single commodity world. In it, local cultures and identities lose their roots and are replaced by symbols of the commodity world.

Parody writing is an effective way of inducing students who are having difficulty in writing naturally into creative writing in the course of liberal education at universities. When parody writing, students should be provided with a rubric for parody writing. At this time, Rubric plays a role in ensuring the writing not to be carried away unilaterally by imitation and fun. Parody writing requires the reframe work to dissolve existing stereotypes and exoteric interpretations provided by the original text. Parody fairy tales induce to set reframe through re-thinking, through which they create new parody fairy tales that are different from the existing ones. Metanoia through reframe combined with imagination leads to a world of creativity. The battle of superheroes: the rise of the knowledge platform strategy in the movie industry

PurposeOver the past years – because of the huge impact of companies such as Airbnb and Uber – the concept of the platform became extremely popular in the business world. Still, the concept of the platform has been evolving for a long time in the management field, from internal platforms (like the famous case of Sony Walkman) to industry-wide platforms (like the case of computers with external software developers), up to transaction and two or multi-sided platforms (such as Airbnb and all the companies with a similar business model). Platforms are often considered disruptors in several industries, from accommodations to mobility to entertainment. Still, the disruptors in the creative world usually deal with the way in which they distribute content (Netflix or Spotify), rather than with the content itself. The purpose of this paper is to understand if and how platforms trategies can also be used in the creative industries.Design/methodology/approachThis paper digs into the movie industry, studying the three most successful Superheroes sagas of the past two decades as follows: the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), DC Comics and X-Men using a narrative approach. The three sagas are studied through network analysis to understand their “platform approach”.FindingsThe results show how platform strategies are relevant also in creative industries – defining the concept of “knowledge platform strategy” – and how they have a significant impact in terms of market performance. The MCU builds on a common knowledge through the various movies that enable the chance to rely on many of the platforms’ characteristics emerging from the literature.Research limitations/implicationsThis research extends the concept of “platforms,” relying on the three kinds of platform defined in the managerial literature and introducing the “knowledge platform strategy” for creative industries. The main contribution is related to the extension of platforms in research fields where it has not been exploited. This opens up avenues for research both from a knowledge platform and creative industries perspectives.Practical implicationsManagers, working not only in creative industries but also in industries where a common knowledge basis may be leveraged to develop new products over time, may use the concept of “knowledge platform strategy” to rethink the new development process or knowledge management from a customer perspective.Originality/valueThis study explores a mature and relevant concept – the platforms – in a new filed, the creative industries using the case of Superheroes sagas, proposing a new perspective to explain the success of MCU while proposing a new platform strategy.
