Opportunities and constraints in organic rice marketing - A study in Sirkazhi block of Nagapattinam district

India is a large country with inherent geographic, ecological and cultural diversity and providing safe food to the nation is a challenging task. Production and marketing of organic food material is one of the way outs for providing safe food to the people. So, in order to analyse the opportunities and constraints in organic rice marketing, a study was conducted in Sirkazhi block of Nagapattinam district, taking a sample size of 60. Major findings emanated from the study which is based on the analysis on the constraints faced by the organic rice growers revealed that the prime constraint was the risk of low yield for the initial two years of transition from conventional to organic farming. The study indicated that 76 per cent of the farmers had awareness regarding certification and out of which only 64 per cent materialized the certification process. Reasons attributed for not growing certified organic rice showed that the purpose for own family was the prime reason. Marketing channel study revealed that the farmers preferred to market organic rice through contract farming with CIKS. Awareness on consumption of organic rice showed that 60 per cent of the consumers having awareness on organic rice, out of which only 40 per cent of them were turned into organic rice consumers. Consumption pattern of organic rice revealed that out of the total consumers of organic products, 65 per cent of them were rice consumers. Factors determining consumers preference for organic rice exposed that health is the main attribute preferred by the consumers for shifting to organic rice consumption. Among the various options ensuring consumer credibility on organic rice purchase buying organic rice from specific identified organic farmer was considered as the best option, Marketing through small organic rice co-operative was the main suggestion given by the farmers to popularize organic rice consumption. Traders had awareness regarding organic rice but out of the total trader's only 20 per cent really marketing organic rice. The price factor appeared to be the key motivating factor for organic rice production, the healthy and safety factors were appeared to be the key motivating factors in the consumption or purchase of organic rice and unavailability of organic rice was found to be the major constraint in organic rice marketing.

Analysis of Organic and Green Food Production and Consumption Trends in China

The main objective of this review is to analyze the trends of organic and green food production and consumption in China. The organic and green food industry in China has experienced rapid development during the past decade. This development is incited by increase in disposable income, healthy consciousness of the society, consumer knowledge, promotion campaign and environmental concerns. However, the primary incentive for the development of the organic food market in China remains the export. Consequently, the consumption of organic products in the local market is low. High production costs, limited governmental subsidies, lengthy certification process and the belief that organic movement is a fashion introduced from foreign countries are the major impediments of organic food producers to survive in China.

ECO-CONSUMERISM AS THE WORLDVIEW POSITION

Problems which humanity encountered with due to the unethical scientific and technological progress, irrational energy consumption, merciless resource pumping and inefficient management were at the level of passive debates for quite a long time. However, the destruction of the Earth’s ecosystem and noticeable modification of its climate background require radical changes in the political, economic and cultural courses, humanity transition to the usage of sustainable energy resources and environmentalisation of the individual consciousness. On April 22nd 2016 was signed the Paris Agreement within United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which deals with the decrease of level of greenhouse gases emissions into the atmosphere starting in 2020. The meeting was intended to demonstrate that although the amount of energy and financial expenditures of the states today is high, but it cannot be compared to those the governments will face in the case of irreversible climate change and necessity of adaptation. The imposition of these issues at the level of interstate discussions, global concerns about the planet ecology, individual initiative and voluntary steps in order to save life on the planet, without a doubt, deserve respect and must be supported. Nevertheless, at the present stage, for the effective implementation of announced decisions strict accountability and sanctions for evading the stated arrangement should be provided. In addition, actions of the states at the global level need to be supplemented by human individual contribution to the process of environment preservation. Among the effective methods for achieving environmentalisation of the mass consciousness there are social advertising, transformation of eco-consumerism in the fashion trend, and cinematography (an advantage of the one in comparison to the cumbrous scientific researches is that its products are understandable for the mass consumers). In terms of environmentalisation of human consciousness the encouraging of young people to create innovative projects in waste recycling sphere is quite promising. Actually, there are many examples that recycling can be not just useful but interesting as well: bins that “thanking” to the passersby for the rubbish (theUnited Arab Emirates) and broadcast the latest news and weather forecasts (theUK), containers in the form of bottles and newspapers (Singapore), machines that feed stray animals (Turkey) etc. Thus, installation of the smart garbage recycling systems in public places and educational institutions will help to form individual sense of responsibility for the environment and other living species on the planet, encourage thoughtful consumption and recycling, and eliminate the policy of mindless consumerism. Among the countries that have already achieved noticeable results in the economy transition to the sustainable energy consumption there are China, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, particularly, the Utrecht city, and the Canary island El Hierro. Even though these implementations of effective energy saving technologies in everyday life of ordinary people are local and territorially limited, it appears that with the increase in the number of citizens who are aware of the benefits of eco-friendly energy consumption, stronger will be their demands to rethink public policy in this area. Meanwhile, it is important to promote among masses the principles of green consumerism that base on the consumption of organic products, energy production from the renewable resources, environmentally friendly activities etc. This type of food and energy production also has potential to stabilize the world market: the price will not vary depending on the richness of fossil fuels deposits or their availability as such. Thus, if the consumers are supplied with energy from the sustainable resources, it will decrease the final product price and allow redirecting of saved funds to the other areas. Furthermore, expanding the boundaries of human knowledge, technological development, moral and physical perfection of the person, cleansing and supporting of ecosystems, production of high-quality organic products instead of distribution of cheap counterfeits, improving of the healthcare industry are able to ensure the formation of the modern ethics of responsibility and humanity transition to the next stage of its development. Finally, attention should be paid to the designing projects of future ecopolis – city, which produces and consumes energy in the most effective and harmless to humans and the environment ways.

Folate intake in a Swedish adult population: Food sources and predictive factors

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Folate plays an important role in cell metabolism, but international studies show that intake is currently below recommendations, especially among women. The study objective was to identify folate food sources by food group, gender, and age group, and to identify factors influencing folate intake, based on food consumption data for Swedish adults in the 2010–11 Riksmaten study.Methods: The sample included a representative Swedish population aged 18–80 years (n = 1657; 56.3% female). Food and nutrient intakes were estimated from self-reported food records during 4 consecutive days. Food consumption was categorized into 26 food groups. Stepwise regression was used to analyze food groups as folate sources for participants. Factors predicting the highest folate intake (third tertile) were determined by logistic regression analysis.Results: Vegetables and pulses represented the most important folate source for all age groups and both genders, especially in women aged 45–64 years (49.7% of total folate intake). The next folate source in importance was dairy products for the youngest group (18–30 years), bread for men, and fruit and berries for women. The likelihood of being in the highest tertile of folate intake (odds ratio = 1.69, 95% confidence interval 1.354–2.104) was higher for men. Influencing factors for folate intake in the highest tertile were low body mass index and high educational level in the men, and high educational level, vegetarian diet, organic product consumption, non-smoking, and alcohol consumption within recommendations in the women.Conclusion: This study describes the folate intake per food group of Swedish adults according to the 2010–11 Riksmaten survey, identifying vegetables and pulses as the most important source. Data obtained on factors related to folate consumption may be useful for the development of specific nutrition education programs to increase the intake of this vitamin in high-risk groups.

Consumption of organic food products: an emerging market perspective

The study was conducted by using a well-structured survey instrument designed to measure attitude, lifestyle and buying patterns of lead organic consumers. Non-probability convenience sampling approach was used to arrive at a total sample of 358 organic consumers. Exploratory factor analysis of the attitudinal and lifestyle related variables under study revealed the existence of five distinct factors. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the factors ranged from 0.63 to 0.857. Based on the grouped variables, the five factors were named as: health consciousness: cognitive component; health consciousness: behavioural component; environmental concerns; health over price and normative influence. The saved factors were then used to arrive at a three-cluster solution, namely, socially concerned; health conscious and environmental concerned consumer segments. Further the cluster analysis was validated through a discriminant analysis with 99.4% accuracy. Occupation, marital status and education had a significant association with the segment composition.

This study describes the mango market in the European Union, the largest importer of Brazilian mangos. For such, we find support in the in-depth interview method for obtaining information from importers, wholesalers and supervisors of horticultural sectors of supermarkets and fruit shops in Spain as well as import agents from other EU countries. The results showed an upward trend for mango consumption in the European Union. With regard to the market behavior of the main mango varieties, we realized that Tommy Atkins mango is classified in two stages of sales lifecycle: maturity and decline; Kent mango is found to be ascending in the maturity stage; Haden and Keitt mango are stabilized in the maturity stage, whilst Palmer, Maya and Shelly mango are classified in the growth stage. The study also showed four well-defined segments in the EU fresh mango market: 1) consumers who priorize the relationship between quality and competitive prices; 2) ‘premium-product’ consumers; 3) organic product consumers; and 4) consumers of the pre-peeled, readyto- eat product.

Buying organic – decision-making heuristics and empirical evidence from Germany

PurposeIdentifying the drivers that positively influence consumption of organic products is of utmost importance to reach consumers beyond the niche. Therefore, this study aims to propose an innovative framework which conceptualizes motivating beliefs and a simple decision-making heuristic as predictors of buying organic.Design/methodology/approachA structural equation approach is applied. Data were obtained from a nationwide panel (n= 1,760) and included survey data and scanner data for five different food categories.FindingsThe model is supported by actual purchasing data in all categories. While beliefs explained about 75 per cent of the variance in the decision-making heuristic for organic products, the heuristic in turn predicted up to 20 per cent of the variance in buying behavior.Research limitations/implicationsFurther research should aim to validate the proposed constructs and relationships and refine the factors.Practical implicationsConsumers have to understand and value the benefits of organic products. Self-interested and environmental beliefs are equally strong motivations which can be seen as an opportunity for marketing.Originality/valueThe results contribute to understanding the structure and the impact of heuristics and quantify the competing beliefs by which heuristics are driven.

The Organic Product Consumer Profile of GAP-Şanlıurfa Province of Turkey

The chemicals and agricultural pesticides are being increasingly used in food productions. The both human health and the environment were negatively affected from their excessive and uncontrolled usage. This situation has become a source of worry for consumers especially for those who have children, older people, pregnant women and health problems in their family. Accordingly, there is an increase of the consumption of organic products globally. In this regards, it is necessary to know expectations and the profile of the consumers, in order to meet the supply and demand. It is aimed to determine the profile of organic consumers who are living in Sanliurfa province of Turkey by this research. The main source of this research comes from the organic product consumers who were selected by simple random sampling methods and interviewed face to face. According to the results, 73% of the consumers are between 30-60 years old, 67.5% of them married, 69.4% of them male, and 89.5% of them has higher education levels, average number of household is 4.2 and 46.3% of them working in private sectors. More than half of the participants know the organic products logo and they follow publicity mainly from internet by 41.4%. These results will be helpful for producers and policy makers about the planning of the organic products based on the consumers.

Organic agriculture in Indonesia: challenges and opportunities

Indonesia is one of the emerging economy countries with approximately 252 million in population in 2015 and an economic growth of 5.2 % per annum. According to the Indonesian government’s estimation, between 2020 and 2030 Indonesia will experience a demographic bonus and become one of the countries with a high demand for agricultural products. As a consequence, the number of working-age adults is increasing rapidly. This leads to an increasing per capita income among middle class households. The expansion of the organic food market depends on the rise of income and the level of education. Indonesia’s current organic food consumer characteristic is made up of highly educated middle class households. Indonesia’s organic food market has been captured by consumers outside the country; therefore, the increase in the country’s population and the resulting economic growth has not necessarily led to increased consumption of organic products among Indonesians. Non-perishable organic products (coffee, tea, rice, etc.) are exported but have faced issues relating to organic certification. Perishable organic products (raw horticultural products) are over-supplied but have faced export challenges due to their perishable nature. The use of social media to promote organic consumption by young Indonesians is crucial and should be investigated in the light of 3.0 initiatives. This will create local demand and ensure sustainable organic agriculture in the country.

Empty Nest Couples: Lifestyles and Typology

AbstractLifestyle is a construct that makes it easier to understand consumers' behaviour, since it involves ways of life and results from past experiences, as well as from personal features based on current situations. It influences the consumption habits of individuals and their families. Accordingly, the aim of the current article is to analyze the lifestyle of individuals who belong to the empty nest couple group. The participants were Brazilian and chosen according to their activities, interests and opinions. Thus, we adopted the exploratory and descriptive design, and followed qualitative and quantitative aspects. According to the results, there are many lifestyles and they can be divided in three groups: the elitist, the politicized and the popular one. Elitists prioritize education and the consumption of cultural and organic products. The politicized group is aware of its political rights and duties. The popular group practices common habits such as playing soccer, watching TV shows and eating industrialized food.

The effect of food service consumers’ organic selection attributes on satisfaction

본 논문에서는 이에 본 연구에서는 유기농 선택속성이 만족도에 어떤 영향을 미치는 연구를 통해 영향관계를 파악하여 유기농식품 관련업계에 유용한 정보를 제공함과 동시에 유기농식품에 대한 보다 더 효율적인 방향을 제시해 소비자들이 긍정적인 태도를 형성할 수 있는 방안을 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. ‘유기농식품 선택속성’을 독립변수로, ‘만족도’를 종속변수로 하여 다중회귀분석을 실시한 결과, 맛, 포장, 안전성이 만족도에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 가격, 영양, 다양성은 ‘만족도’에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 맛, 포장, 안전성의 순으로 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났는데 이는 유기농식품 선택속성 중 포장이 만족도에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 요인이라고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 유기농식품을 판매하는 업체들에서는 가격을 소비자들이 원하는 적정 수준으로 맞추고, 유기농식품의 소비확대를 위해 정확하고 올바른 정보제공을 함과 동시에 다양한 유기농식품을 구성해 소비자들의 만족도를 높여야 할 것이다. 다양한 유기농식품과 안전에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있으므로 위생 상태를 높여 가격 경쟁력을 갖추고, 아울러 유기농식품의 합리적인 소비를 위해 소비자와 생산업체간의 지속적인 상호 정보교환을 통해 신뢰성을 확보한다면 유기농식품 산업이 더욱 성장할 수 있을 것이다.

CHALLENGES AND PERSPECTIVES FOR APPLICATION OF SUSTAINABLE MARKETING IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE CONSUMPTION OF ORGANIC DAIRY PRODUCTS IN THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA

The main goal of this paper is to identify challenges and perspectives for application of sustainable marketing in order to increase demand and consumption of organic dairy products, i.e. to gain insight in consumers’ preferences, motives, attitudes and interests to buy organically produced dairy products in the Republic of Macedonia. This research draws on a survey of 209 respondents within the Republic of Macedonia. The descriptive analysis (Cross tabulation), the nonparametric test of significance Chi–square (χ2) and the correlation indicator Phi coefficient were all applied in examining the working hypothesis. The results of these study present organic buyers tend to be older, with higher education and with higher family income than those who do not buy them. However, the main barrier to increase the market share of organic dairy products is consumer information and availability of organic dairy products in the Republic of Macedonia. Sustainability and Competitiveness of Romanian Farms through Organic Agriculture

Currently, the development of any sector involves respecting the principles of sustainability, which means economic, social and environmental development. Moreover, organic farming is a very important field for ensuring sustainable development. Romania has great potential for the development of organic agriculture, especially due to the large number of available farmland and reduced use of fertilizers and other chemicals. However, the development of organic farming in Romania is in an early stage, due to the numerous problems that Romanian agriculture is still facing. Concern for the environment should be reflected at the level of production processes and consumption. As market demand influences and stimulates production, we can ask the question to what extent stimulating the consumption of organic products through green marketing can boost organic agriculture development and competitiveness of Romanian farms. Using several methods of research, such as analysis, synthesis, comparison, statistical methods and by calling on studies, reports and data series on organic farming in the EU and Romania, this paper highlights Romania's position in terms of the level of development of organic agriculture and recommends several ways to improve the outcomes obtained by Romania in the field. Moreover, based on regression equations, the trend of convergence of Romanian organic agriculture development in relation to the EU countries is analysed. The paper demonstrates that one of the measures that can be taken by Romanian farms is green marketing strategy development that can stimulate both consumption and production of organic products. Therefore, with increasing interest in the development of organic agriculture in Romania, green marketing can play an increasingly important role in promoting the benefits of consuming organic products, thus contributing to business development of organic products as well as to the development of Romanian agriculture. Promoting organic agriculture through the use of green marketing techniques is useful for improving human, environmental and economic health, in the context of sustainable development.

Indonesian Consumers' Attitudes towards Organic Products

The increased public awareness of health in recent decades was expected to have positive impact on the increase in demand for organic food products. It is because these products are produced using natural farming system, which produces healthier and safer foods for consumption. But over time, the number of consumers of organic products in Indonesia tends to stagnate. This means that the initial assumption stating that there would be growing demand for organic products was not fully proven. Many researchers have revealed these conditions, where price is one of the crucial factors that inhibit the acquisition. This research aims to uncover other factors that influence consumers’ attitudes towards organic food products, as well as to discover the price level at which people are starting to willingly buy the products. This research was conducted in several shopping malls located in Jakarta and Bogor (West Java) from February 2012 - March 2012, covering 200 respondents who were surveyed by accidental sampling technique. The low growth of consumers for organic food products in Indonesia is caused partly by the still minimal information about the benefits of organic food products. Most people have the perception that the benefits of organic products are not different from non-organic food products and organic products are not durable. Physically, it is difficult to distinguish between organic products and non-organic products. Those who had consumed them stated that the benefits of organic products could not be perceived directly. People who are interested to consume them regularly experience difficulties in getting the products because the products are only sold in certain places, and they are not even always available at any given time. The price difference of up to 5% compared to conventional products is the price level considered reasonable by all consumers. Analysis of consumption of organic products in Nisava district

Current living conditions have imposed the imperative need for transition to organic way of production due to enormous environmental pollution and excessive exploration of natural resources by traditional way of production. The aim of this work was to analyze the consumption of organic products in Nis district by using multivariate analyze method. Technics of multivariate analyze determine the types of organic products represented in consumption of Nis district population, way of supplying with this products, influence of media and world economic crisis to their consumption. The results obtained in this study indicate the existence of significant growth and development of organic production and consumption of organic products.

The organic farming sector in developing countries is still diminutive. However, the traditional practice of organic farming by the indigenous farmers is an advantage that would help India to become a global market leader in this sector. India has the potential to emerge as a major exporter of organic produce. Organic products mature without the use of fertilizers, artificial chemicals, and pesticides. The Indian organic food market, although in its nascent stage, has started growing rapidly. Generally, consumers prefer organic food due to safety, human health, and ecological concern. Sometimes it could also be due to attributes like nutrition value, taste, originality and look of organic food. Worldwide trade in organic products is growing incredibly which has prompted experts to project consumption of organic food to be more than 25% of total food consumption by 2020. Universal consumption growth rates over the next 3-5 years will be fairly high (25 – 30%) when compared to most other categories of food. In the last decade, organic food products have been measured to do a healthier business than conventional food products. Thus the expansion of organic agriculture is seen as a part of promising promotion trends. This research reveals the percentage consumption of organic food products and provides suggestions to implement the various marketing strategies adopted by the retailers to sell the products and other factors impacting the preference of the consumers in the various strata of the society.

EXTENSION WORK REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF ORGANIC AGRICULTURE FROM THE STANDPOINT OF THE EXTENSION WORKERS IN MENIA GOVERNORATE

this research aimed at determining the degree of importance of the requirements related to: the agricultural extension system, personnel and extension programs in order to enable agricultural extension play an active role for the promotion of organic farming, as well as to identifying the sources of information of the respondents regarding organic agriculture, and identifying the problems and suggested solutions concerning that matter. The study was conducted in Minia Governorate, where the largest number of the extension workers was found in three districts, data were collected in January and February 2015 by using personal interview questionnaire with a random sample of extension personnel amounted to 138 respondents representing about 64.2% of the total number of extension personnel in these districts according to Krejcie and Morgan. Frequencies, percentages and weighted average were used to present data of study.The most important results were summarized as follows: 1- The most important requirements for the agricultural extension system to improve organic agriculture according to the weighted average were: provide specialists for organic agriculture at the level of agricultural departments (3.62), provide a suitable means of communication between organic farmers and agricultural extension (3.59), following strength the relationship between agricultural extension system and agriculture research centers to get new information and recent results in organic agriculture (3.58). 2- The most important requirements for extension personnel for improving organic agriculture according to the weighted average was as follows: provide financial and material support for agricultural workers to enable them to carry out their functions in organic agriculture (3.55), then agricultural workers are high qualified in agricultural extension (3.52), and subsequent access to suitable and sufficient courses in organic agriculture (3.5). 3- The most important requirements for developing extension programs for improving organic agriculture according to the weighted average were: identify problems facing organic agriculture in Egypt (3.5), and then identify the needs of consumers of organic products (3.43), following the preparation of guidance publications on organic agriculture (3.39). 4- The results indicated that the work chiefs come in the first as source of the organic agriculture to respondents as it mentioned by (76.8%), then extension meetings (72.5%), and extension releases (72.5%).The results showed that the most important problems from the perspective of respondents were: the absence of complete knowledge among consumers of the importance of organic product in terms of value to health and the environment (78.9%),And lack of agricultural inputs of seed, bio-fertilizer and organic pesticides (70.3%), with easy way to farm. 6- The most important solutions to problems were: the agricultural extension raise awareness of consumer for the importance of organic product on health and environmental (81.9%), support production requirements and provide in the agricultural association (73.9%). This research was completed several recommendations were derived from the findings.

The Purchase and Consumption Motivations of an Organic Product by the Tunisian Consumer: an application on the Prickly Pear Seed Oil (PPS)

This article focuses on the attributes, consequences and values of the consumption of organic products. The study relies on the cognitive chaining method which consists in highlighting and prioritizing the main reasons for purchasing and consuming organic products. A qualitative, exploratory study was conducted involving 60 Tunisian consumers of prickly pear seed (PPS) oil. The results of this analysis show the consumers’ associated values which account for the purchase and consumption of organic products (price, health, ethics, satisfaction, local economy, etc.). These values were mainly defined through their cognitive structures. The findings of the research will allow operators to determine areas of improvement of the bio sector.

Enquête d’investigation sur des cas de fièvre de la vallée du Rift au Tagant, Mauritanie

BackgroundRift Valley Fever (RVF) is a zoonotic arbovirosis. Among animals, it mainly affects ruminants, causing abortions in gravid females and deaths among young animals. In humans, RVF virus infection is usually asymptomatic or characterized by a moderate fever. However, in 1–3% of cases, the disease progresses to a severe form with 50% mortality. ObjectiveSearch for risk factors and to propose appropriate measures to prevent the potential for extension of the epidemic, and to make recommendations for disease monitoring and control. MethodsThis investigation involved human RVF cases reported between October 12 and November 20, 2012 in the area of Tagant in Mauritania. Arbovirosis diagnosis was established by the laboratory of the National Institute of Public Health Research in Nouakchott (Mauritania) in collaboration with the Pasteur Institute of Dakar (Senegal). ResultsOf 212 subjects, RVF serology was positive in 26 (12%). Among those seropositive for RVF, 11 (42%) had severe hemorrhagic forms. The case fatality rate was 91%. A series of animal abortions (cattle, sheep and goats) was observed in the area where all but two subjects resided. Exposure to potential risk factors for RVF virus infection was found in all patients. ConclusionMortality is very high in the hemorrhagic forms of RVF. Disease prevention is necessary by strengthening the fight against vectors, avoiding contact and consumption of organic products from diseased animals and vaccination of animals in areas where the disease is endemic. Furthermore, it is essential to establish management procedures for patients infected with the RVF virus. An appropriately equipped referral hospital is necessary, together with strengthened epidemiological surveillance by notifying all suspected cases of hemorrhagic fevers.
