The use of Escape Room as an alternative teaching strategy for sustainable mobility

Gamification and Escape Rooms (ER) are becoming useful tools to encourage attitudinal and behavioural changes and increase learning. In the field of sustainable mobility their use is not widespread and is, in most cases, related to digital games and mobile applications aimed largely at an adult audience. In this study, we explore the potential of this tool to encourage the learning of sustainable mobility concepts in children between the ages of 10 and 13. The experience created, through the resolution of tests and puzzles, has led the 105 students involved to experience, in a playful environment, the formation and learning of sustainable mobility concepts. To measure learning, a pre- and post-experience questionnaire has been provided and the results have been classified with some characteristics of the students such as gender and mobility habits. The analysis of the questionnaire data using multinomial logit models has allowed us to determine which variables affect the probability of answering correctly before and after the experience. In the results obtained we can observe that gender, bicycle use, public transport or the presence of many cars in the family are relevant variables when it comes to having knowledge about mobility issues and that the ER experience has favored a change, although minimal, in the acquisition of sustainable mobility concepts.

Factors influencing the user behaviour of shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs): A systematic literature review

The emergence of autonomous driving technologies will transform mobility in the future. Shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) are crucial elements of sustainable future mobility concepts because they are expected to have a positive impact on urban mobility, infrastructure, travel behaviour and the environment. Driven by the necessity for sustainable mobility concepts and the prospect of accelerated shared usage instead of private ownership, research on the factors influencing user behaviour (e.g., intention and willingness to use, adoption) has increased. However, knowledge in the emerging field of SAVs is still unstructured and the lack of synthesis diminishes the ability to predict user behaviour and use this knowledge to develop improved mobility concepts. In order to lay the foundation in this area and to enable the integration of new knowledge with the wider literature, this paper aims to investigate and identify factors that influence the behavioural intention to use SAVs by conducting a systematic literature review following the PRISMA guidelines. The review aggregates 61 factors influencing willingness and intention to use SAVs, which are grouped into three main categories (user-related factors, service-related factors, time- and weather-related factors). Finally, the review identifies several neglected factors and derives avenues for future research.

Young Travellers and Green Travel in the Post-COVID Era

The concept of sustainable mobility and related green travel will play an increasingly important role in the development of tourism and climate policy in the European Union. Initiated by the European Commission, Erasmus+ green travel is a new initiative and not yet researched by EU institutions or in the literature. However, it fits in with the literature research on green mobility. The aim of this paper was to assess whether young tourists are interested in green mobility, whether they are willing to use means of low-emission transport when making trips, what factors play a role in their means of transport choices, and whether risk aversion influences their choices. For the purpose of this work, the authors conducted a survey in Poland among 36 Polish and foreign people from Generation Z studying in Poland and taking advantage of the green travel program in the Erasmus+ program and an economic experiment regarding their level of risk taking. Based on these data, it was examined whether young tourists are interested in green mobility, what factors play an important role when choosing a low-emission means of transport, and whether the level of risk taking influences their choices. The results of the survey indicated that young tourists tend to choose means of high-emission transport or a mix of high- and low-emission transport. However, if they receive a financial incentive, they are willing to use means of low-emission transport when travelling. The results of this study also indicated that environmental factors do not influence the propensity of young tourists towards specific means of transport, including low-emission transport, and economic and cognitive factors play an important role. It was also found that there is some positive relationship between the level of risk taking of the traveller and the propensity to green travel.

Quantitative and Comparative Analysis of Energy Consumption in Urban Logistics Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Selected Means of Transport

Cities are moving towards sustainable development, which consists of tasks and challenges to improve the quality of life, and minimize energy consumption. The concept of sustainable mobility includes the choice of means of transport other than the car for all journeys, especially short distances, and for the delivery of goods. Due to the growing populations of cities, lack of free space, and high costs of building infrastructure for traditional means of transport, cities are looking for modern solutions that allow for the cheap, fast, and green transportation of people and goods. Urban air mobility is the answer to these problems, and uses eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicle systems (UAVs). The article’s main purpose is to present an energy efficiency analysis using UAVs and electric scooters in the transport of takeaway food, which is a solution that fits into the zero-emission transport policy. The article presents the following research problem: which type of electric transport (scooters/UAVs) shows a lower demand for electric energy when delivering food from restaurants to individual customers? The analysis method was applied using the D’Andrea, Dorling, Figliozzi, Kirchstein, and Tseng energy models. The completed calculations were used to perform a comparative analysis of energy consumption for three adopted scenarios related to energy consumption by drones.

Sustainable mobility learning: Technological acceptance model for gamified experience with ClassCraft in primary school

The concept of sustainable mobility is related to the fulfilment of certain conditions that consider environmental, economic and social factors when making decisions on transport activity. The recognition of the role of education as a key factor for sustainable development and sustainable mobility has been growing. Therefore, the development of training schemes aimed at sustainable mobility education as a tool for a better future for the generations to come is of fundamental importance. This study analyses the factors affecting the adoption of the ClassCraft platform in activities related to sustainable mobility. The proposed experience involved children aged 10–11 years old, a total of 75 pupils. This experience was the basis for analyzing the pupils' perception of the gamification-based methodology. A mixed method has been used, combining qualitative results from a Focus Group (FG) with 6 students, and quantitative results through a questionnaire based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with all the 75 students. The results reflect that all students consider this methodology as an opportunity for a change in the school experience to make classroom activities more enjoyable. Our research contributes to the application of a mixed methods approach that addresses an educational challenge, considering the voice of the children when applying new teaching–learning strategies.

Evaluasi Kualitas Ruang Pedestrian di Kawasan Ciputat Timur dengan Parameter Walkability

By the middle of this century two thirds of the world’s population are expected to be living in urban centres. Without sustainable mobility concepts that include public transport as well as non-motorized transport, cities will collapse under the burden of traffic jams, polluted air and noise (Müller, 2016). According to Global Designing Cities Initiative 2016, the walkable, cyclable, and transit-oriented neighborhoods are what today’s urban dwellers need and demand. Daily traffic happened in East Ciputat Region, South Tangerang City, is affected by its strategic position and also by dependance of local people on private motor vehicles for their daily activities. The lack of good pedestrian space makes people not willing to get around by walking even though their destinations are actually convenient enough from their homes. This research is aimed to evaluate the planning quality of pedestrian space in the East Ciputat Region on supporting daily mobility by walking as a fundamental transportation tool. Evaluative-qualitative method is utilized in this research by doing a direct observation on the site. The assessment parameter is theories related to walkability. The novelty of this research is identifying how arrangement of sidewalk space zoning affecting the walkability in East Ciputat area. Then it could be generated that low quality of pedestrian space in the area is caused by unavailability of regular placement for the street furniture zone and frontage zone, and also the lack of maintenance for Culvert Box structure as its main groundcover. The result of the research is expected to be evaluation for government and city planners in arranging city corridors to be more walkable.

The application of sustainable mobility and multimodality opportunities based on the example of Vilnius city

The article discusses the concept of sustainable mobility and multimodality and the infrastructure that creates these opportunities, measures to increase efficiency, future-oriented transport policy and future ITS and other innovative solutions. The problem is formed on the basis of theoretical material, the research based on the collected statistical data of the Vilnius city transport system, a correlation analysis is performed and causal relationships are sought. Based on them, a quantitative study is carried out by means of a questionnaire, as well as an analysis of good practice in foreign cities. The results of the performed calculations and research will allow to determine the factors reducing the efficiency of the urban transport system and their impact and will show the ways in which they could be eliminated by proposed model.

Experimental analysis of pedestrian behavior at different configurations of crosswalks at roundabout legs

Walking has recently been one of the most popular forms of mobility proposed in many urban plans and in the new concept of sustainable mobility. This study investigated pedestrian behavior when crossing the legs of urban roundabouts. Pedestrian crossing behavior was analyzed using video recordings made at seven crosswalks located on urban roundabouts. To describe pedestrian behavior, crossing conditions (legal or illegal) and Kerb Delay were chosen. The data obtained from the video analysis were treated with CHAID analysis to determine the distribution of the parameters chosen as a function of features considered more conditioning. A path analysis was then performed to assess the influence of these features on the parameters defining pedestrian behavior. In order to encourage legal pedestrian behavior, the results of the present study suggest implementation of refuge islands at the legs of roundabouts. The research results can help refine the algorithms that define autonomous vehicle-pedestrian interactions.

Selected Aspects of Sustainable Mobility Reveals Implementable Approaches and Conceivable Actions

The transportation sector plays a prominent role in driving the economy of any given nation. However, with the recent tensions arising in and around the transportation sector, sustainable mobility concepts have evolved. However, it is quite unclear whether sustainable mobility is feasible and exhibits economic returns, environmental benefits, and societal advantages. Hence, taking into account the environmental, economic, and social impact, and technical possibilities, this study intends to analyse sustainable mobility in relation to economic returns, environmental benefits and societal advantages using bibliometric analysis. For this study, we considered two decades of research, from 2001 to 2021. An in-depth search was performed on articles generated in the last two decades to assess the state of the literature on sustainable mobility. The most reverent, frequently referenced papers and influential journals in the field of sustainable mobility were identified. The acquired findings highlight the most prominent publications, journals, and authors who have made significant contributions to sustainable mobility studies, as well as the sub-areas or themes linked to sustainable mobility. Overall, the analysis discovered current paradigms, significant research topics, and a relationship between the domains of sustainable mobility studies. Meanwhile, this study also demonstrates advancements in the primary themes and sub-areas during the previous 20 years and alterations in future research fields. In addition, this study identified the promotion of rapid-reliable-safe-convenient (RRSC) transportation services, reduction in urban car traffic, and support to low transportation demand as the critical steps that require immediate attention in order to build a sustainable mobility future. We also observed that hydrogen would be a promising fuel and potential technology for the future mobility sector in the post-COVID era.

Концепция «устойчивой мобильности»: теория и практика

The article analyzes the theoretical foundations of the concept of sustainable mobility within the framework of its three key components. It shows that the problem of transport sustainability is holistic and interdisciplinary and is considered within environmental, urbanistic and transport approaches that complement each other and offer conceptually close solutions for modern urban development. The article discusses the main directions of sustainable mobility, laid down in strategic planning documents of foreign countries. The paper also provides examples of the implementation of the principles of sustainable mobility in the strategies of socio-economic development of Russia’s cities and regions developed by the authors. Population surveys conducted by the authors in Russian cities as part of the development of these strategic planning documents show that about 95% of the population prefer sustainable transport policy tools that have proven themselves useful in many cities around the world. The analysis concludes with the recommendations for Russia's transition to the «sustainable transport» paradigm.

The Concept of Sustainable Mobility in Modern Megacities

Purpose: to formulate the general conception of sustainable mobility management in modern cities based on an analysis of the main approaches to the management of the development of sustainable mobility.Methods: the study is based on the application of systems analysis methods. The analysis is based on open sources information such as scientific articles, legal and regulatory acts, official strategic planning documents, analytical and methodical materials of Russian and international conferences. The article also includes the results of the author's empirical research conducted.Results: an analysis of the development of sustainable transport mobility in large cities and current strategies for its further formation was carried out. It allowed identifying the main elements of the conceptual model of the development of transport mobility. The research defines the structure of an adaptive system for sustainable mobility management, which would form a basis for developing a sustainable mobility concept to effectively organize various stakeholders' cooperation.Conclusions and Relevance: local solutions for transportation mobility may not be practical or can lead to a conflict of interests. That calls for the complex approach to forming sustainable mobility as a feature of a city transportation system to satisfy the demand for mobility to increase the quality of life in the cities. The conceptual basis for the development of sustainable mobility consists of goal setting, planning, collaboration, implementation, usage.The effective management of sustainable mobility can be achieved by implementing digital analytical platforms, working as a single ecosystem. Developing such an ecosystem can be time-consuming and directly influenced by technological, infrastructural, legal, and economic factors. The most urgent is to redesign the existing mobility patterns to achieve the environmental goals, the higher quality of life of city residents, the engagement of different stakeholders in sustainable mobility development.

STUDY OF COMFORT OF TRANSPORT SYSTEM OF SAMARA CITY

This article discusses the problem of constant growth in the level of motorization, amid a decrease in the use of public transport. It touches upon the functioning of urban public transport in the context of the concept of sustainable mobility. On the example of the city of Samara, using a sociological survey, an analysis of the comfort of the transport system was carried out. The analysis of the transport accessibility of the districts of the city of Samara relative to the historical center of the city is presented. An assessment is made of the readiness of the city and, in particular, the transport infrastructure for the introduction of paid parking zones in the central part of the city. The studies on the assessment of the probability of abandoning a personal car in favor of public transport are presented. The criteria for reducing or completely abandoning the use of a personal car in favor of public transport have been identifi ed.

GreenTrail – A Sustainable Mobility Concept Advisor (SMCA) Tool

Despite the scientific-technical progress in developing significantly more efficient powertrains as well as the overall increasing environmental awareness, the share of the transport sector in global GHG emissions has substantially been increased as one of the only industries since 1990 to 25% in Europe. Essentially traceable to the rise in world population and the changed society needs boosting the private and commercial use of emission-based mobility concepts, in the private sector there is an initial rethinking in acquiring or sharing mobility options.Supporting this change in mindset, behavior and lifestyle, this contribution presents a sustainable mobility concept advisor (SMCA) tool allowing to assess an individually best mobility solution for daily life and/or infrequently travels. Not only being limited to ecological but also technical and economic aspects, thus the easy-operable GreenTrail application visualizes the most preferable alternatives in a typical structure of route planning tools.

Sustainable Mobility: A Review of Possible Actions and Policies

In this paper, a review of the main actions and policies that can be implemented to promote sustainable mobility is proposed. The work aims to provide a broad, albeit necessarily not exhaustive, analysis of the main studies and research that from different points of view have focused on sustainable mobility. The structure of the paper enables the reader to easily identify the topics covered and the studies related to them, so as to guide him/her to the related in-depth studies. In the first part of the paper, there is a preliminary analysis of the concept of sustainable mobility, the main transport policies implemented by the European Union and the USA, and the main statistical data useful to analyze the problem. Next, the main policies that can promote sustainable mobility are examined, classifying them into three topics: Environmental, socio-economic, and technological. Many of the policies and actions examined could be classified into more than one of the three categories used; for each of them, there is a description and the main literature work on which the topic can be analyzed in more detail. The paper concludes with a discussion on the results obtained and the prospects for research.

Sustainable Mobility in the Context of Humanization of the Urban Environment: a regional experience

The purpose of the research is to identify modern approaches to the spatial development of Belarusian cities. The article focuses on the role of transit-oriented design in spatial development of cities. The principles of ‘green urban construction’ and their implementation in pilot projects for urban areas reconstruction in Polotsk-Novopolotsk agglomeration are considered. The introduction of developed territory transformation models into urban planning practice was suggested. The participation of Belarus in international initiatives and projects relating to urban and transport planning are assessed. Organizational and institutional prerequisites for using the European experience of mobility management have been established. The scientific novelty consists in the study of the concept of sustainable mobility as a tool for territorial development and humanization of the environment with a focus on the conditions in Belarus.

Assessing Sustainable Mobility Measures Applying Multicriteria Decision Making Methods

An increasing number of recent discussions have focused on the need for designing transport systems in consonance with the importance of the environment, thus promoting investment in the growth of non-motorized transport infrastructure. Under such conditions, the demand for implementing the most effective infrastructure measures has a profoundly positive impact, and requires the least possible financial and human resources. The development of the concept of sustainable mobility puts emphasis on the integrated planning of transport systems, and pays major attention to the expansion of non-motorized and public transport, and different sharing systems, as well as to effective traffic management involving intelligent transport systems. The development of transport infrastructure requires massive investment, and hence the proper use of mobility measures is one of the most important objectives for the rational planning of sustainable transport systems. To achieve this established goal, this article examines a compiled set of mobility measures and identifies the significance of the preferred tools, which involve sustainable mobility experts. The paper also applies multicriteria decision making methods in assessing urban transport systems and their potential in terms of sustainable mobility. Multicriteria decision making methods have been successfully used for assessing the effectiveness of sustainable transport systems, and for comparing them between cities. The proposed universal evaluation model is applied to similar types of cities. The article explores the adaptability of the model by assessing big Lithuanian cities.

Reorganization and development of the trolleybus subsystem in Belgrade

The IME (Identity - Mobility - Ecology) Project, initiated by the City of Belgrade, aims to bring together a number of different projects focused on strengthening the city identity, promoting and implementing the concept of sustainable mobility and enhancing environmental awareness. The implementation of this project significantly influences the appearance, concept and organization of the trolleybus subsystem in the central city area. The extension of the pedestrian zone in the city centre must continue to ensure the functioning of public transport in order to meet the needs of the city's residents to reach the desired destination in an easy, simple and safe way. The main goal of the analysis Reorganization and Development of the Trolleybus subsystem in Belgrade, is to find the optimal solution for reorganization of the existing trolleybus line network as well as further development directions of the trolleybus subsystem as a significant sustainable city mobility factor.

Introducing a mobility on demand system to prospective users with the help of a serious game

Sustainable mobility concepts are challenged to create a positive users' attitude and a high willingness-to-use to be adopted and survive on the market. Prospective users must not merely be informed about the service but become involved and feel affected. The contribution introduces a digital learning game, a so called serious game, to improve players' knowledge, attitude and willingness to use mobility on demand systems (MODS). The goal of an evaluation study in a high school (N = 71) was to compare the serious game and an online research according to the proposed effects on knowledge, attitude and usage intention. The study demonstrates that pupils' level of knowledge about the operational concepts of MODS increased after playing the game and the retention rate was higher. Playing the game furthermore resulted in a more positive appraisal of MODS concerning their usefulness. No significant effect of the serious game on the later usage behaviour was found. The paper points out the benefits of a gamified approach for introducing mobility services to prospective users and derives recommendations for the application of gamified approaches to facilitate the adoption of new technology or services.

Sustainable Mobility at Thirty

It is now almost three decades since the concept of ‘sustainable mobility’ first appeared in the 1992 EU Green Paper on the Impact of Transport on the Environment. This paper reviews the literature and reflects on how societies’ understanding and interpretation of the concept of sustainable mobility has evolved. We track this evolution over six dimensions: research and policy, transport impacts and categories, scientific disciplines, methodological approach, and research questions. From this review we assert that the mainstream understanding and interpretation of sustainable mobility can be grouped into four generations of studies. The first generation of studies (1992–1993) were techno-centric and focused on how to limit transport’s negative environmental impacts by improving then-existing technology. The second, third and fourth generations of studies (1993–2000, 2000–2010 and 2010–2018 respectively) increasingly acknowledge the limitations of preceding efforts to achieve sustainable mobility, and open for a more diverse set of alternatives. These studies have gradually become more interdisciplinary in nature—reflecting the inter-relatedness of mobility with all other aspects of society. We conclude that despite the ensuing elevation of mobility into the holistic picture society, we still have not achieved a sustainable mobility system. Furthermore, what is much needed now, more than ever, is a bold set of new narratives.

Optimized electrolyzer operation: Employing forecasts of wind energy availability, hydrogen demand, and electricity prices

One of the main advantages of fuel cell based mobility over other sustainable mobility concepts is the flexible production of hydrogen via electrolysis. To date, it is unclear how electrolysis at hydrogen refueling stations should be operated in order to achieve the lowest possible costs despite the constraints of hydrogen demand. This study proposes and evaluates an intelligent operating strategy for electrolysis capable of exploiting times of low electricity prices while participating in the spot market and maximizing wind energy utilization when combined with a wind farm. This strategy is based on a simulation model considering imperfect forecasts (e.g. of wind availability or energy prices) and non-linear electrolyzer behavior. Results show that this approach reduces hydrogen production costs by up to 9.2% and increases wind energy utilization by up to 19%, respectively.
