Hydrochemical characterization and comprehensive water quality assessment of groundwater within the main stream area of Yishu River.

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the hydrochemical characteristics, controlling factors, and water quality of groundwater in the main stream area of Yishu River (MSYR), a study was conducted using water quality data collected during both the dry and wet seasons. Through statistical analysis, hydrochemical methods, fuzzy comprehensive evaluation, and health risk evaluation modeling, the water chemical characteristics of the main stream area of Yishu River were studied, and the water quality of the area was comprehensively evaluated. The findings indicate that HCO3- and Ca2+ are the predominant anions and cations in the MSYR during the dry and wet seasons, respectively. Moreover, anion concentration in groundwater follows HCO3- > SO42- > NO3- > Cl-, while cations are ranked as Ca2+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > K+. Overall, the groundwater manifests as weakly alkaline and is predominantly classified as hard-fresh water. During the wet season, there is greater groundwater leaching and filtration, with rock and soil materials more readily transferred to groundwater, and the concentrations of main chemical components in groundwater are higher than those during the dry season, and the hydrochemical types are primarily characterized as HCO3-Ca·Mg and SO4·Cl-Ca·Mg types. These results also suggest that the chemical composition of the groundwater in the MSYR is influenced mainly by water-rock interaction. The primary ions originate from the dissolution of silicate rock and carbonate rock minerals, while cation exchange plays a critical role in the hydrogeochemical process. Groundwater in the MSYR is classified mostly as class II water, indicating that it is generally of good quality. However, areas with high levels of class IV and V water are present locally, and NO3- concentration is a crucial factor affecting groundwater quality. In the wet season, more groundwater and stronger mobility lead to greater mobility of NO3- and wider diffusion. Therefore, the risk evaluation model shows that nitrate health risk index is higher in the wet season than it is in the dry season, with children being more vulnerable to health risks than adults. To study groundwater in this area, its hydrochemical characteristics, water quality, and health risk assessment are of great practical significance for ensuring water safety for residents and stable development of social economy.

Fluoride concentration in groundwater of the Jalisco Highlands, Mexico

La principal fuente de abastecimiento de agua potable en la mayoría de las regiones administrativas del estado de Jalisco (México) son los acuíferos subterráneos, que en muchos casos son de origen hidrotermal, los cuales se caracterizan por la presencia de compuestos químicos potencialmente nocivos para la salud humana y animal. El área de estudio de este trabajo se ubica en el noreste del estado de Jalisco, comprendiendo 10 municipios en dos regiones administrativas. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo determinar la tendencia de la concentración de flúor en pozos profundos que abastecen de agua potable a los municipios del área de estudio, a partir de dos evaluaciones realizadas durante los años 2021 y 2022. En los resultados se puede observar una tendencia creciente en la concentración de flúor de la mayoría de los pozos analizados en los periodos estudiados, las mayores concentraciones se reportan en las localidades de: Tepatitlán, Arandas, Mexticacán y San Miguel el Alto, así como en los municipios de Valle de Guadalupe y Cañadas de Obregón, representando el uso de estas fuentes como agua potable un mayor riesgo para la salud de la población local, ratificándose así mismo, una tendencia creciente en la concentración de fluoruros en las aguas subterráneas extraídas del área de estudio, una posible causa es la continua disminución en el nivel dinámico de extracción que presentan la mayoría de los pozos evaluados. Es necesario implementar programas y estrategias para garantizar la sostenibilidad de este recurso vital en esta y otras regiones del país.

Co-occurrence of elevated arsenic and fluoride concentrations in Wuliangsu Lake: implications for the genesis of poor-quality groundwater in the (paleo-)Huanghe (Yellow River) catchment, China

The co-occurrence of high As and F concentrations in saline groundwater in arid and semi-arid regions has attracted considerable attention. However, the factors determining the elevated concentrations of the two elements in surface water in these regions have not been sufficiently studied, and their implications for the poor-quality of local groundwater (high levels of As, F, and salinity) are unknown. A total of 18 water samples were collected from Wuliangsu Lake, irrigation/drainage channels, and the Huanghe (i.e., Yellow River) in the Hetao Basin, China. The pH, concentrations of As and F as well as those of other major elements, and stable isotope (H and O) compositions were analyzed. The water samples had a high pH (7.85–9.01, mean 8.25) and high TDS (402–9778 mg/L, mean 1920 mg/L) values. In six of the 10 lake samples, As concentration was above 10 μg/L (maximum 69.1 μg/L) and, in one of them, F concentration was above 1.5 mg/L. Interestingly, the high As, F, and TDS values simultaneously detected in the lake water were similar to those previously reported in local groundwater, and all water samples showed a significant positive correlation between As and F concentrations (R2 = 0.96, p < 0.01), except for two samples with abnormally high Ca2+ levels. The results of stable isotope analysis and Cl/Br ratios suggested that the lake experienced strong evaporation, which is consistent with the high TDS values. Evaporative concentration is suggested as the main factor contributing to the elevated As and F concentrations in the lake water. In addition, the major ions (e.g., Na+, Cl−, HCO3−, and OH−) and pH in the lake water increased during evaporation, leading to desorption of As and F. Thus, the evaporation process, including evaporative concentration and desorption, was considered primarily responsible for the elevated As and F in the lake water. Based on the results of this study, we presume that the paleolakes in the study area have experienced intense evaporation process. As a result, As, F, and major elements accumulated in sediments (or residual lake water) and were buried in the fluvial basins; then, they were released into the groundwater through multiple (bio)hydrogeochemical processes. By combining the results of this study with those obtained from previous groundwater analyses, we propose a new hypothesis explaining the origin of elevated As and F concentrations in saline groundwater in arid and semi-arid regions.

Noble gas characteristics of microbial gas in the Qaidam Basin, China: Implications for helium enrichment processes

Helium is a critical, strategic and nonrenewable resource with limited reserves and unstable supplies. However, the helium sources and migration processes in petroliferous basins remain unclear. The Qaidam Basin features multiple reservoir layers, multiple genetic types of natural gas, and varying helium concentrations, providing an ideal natural laboratory for understanding the helium enrichment processes. Here, we present the original noble gas isotopic compositions and major gas components of 11 microbial gas samples from three gas layers in the Sebei No.1 gas field, eastern Qaidam Basin, China. The helium isotopic ratios range from 0.007-0.057 Ra, reflecting a predominantly crustal source. The Quaternary Sebei microbial gas features much lower helium concentrations (0.0003-0.001%), 21Ne/22Ne (0.031-0.034), and 40Ar/36Ar ratios (292-380) than thermogenic natural gases in the Qaidam Basin. The middle gas layer (II) of the Sebei gas field features higher 21Ne/22Ne and 40Ar/36Ar ratios than the top and bottom gas layers, displaying positive correlations with higher 4He groundwater concentrations before degassing, as calculated from 4He/20Ne ratios and 20Ne concentrations in air-saturated water. However, the correlations between the 4He contents in natural gas and 21Ne/22Ne and 40Ar/36Ar ratios are unclear, suggesting that 4He dissolves into the groundwater system before degassing into a gas reservoir and that the 4He concentration variations in the gas phase are caused by the different levels of hydrocarbon dilution. Quantitative calculation of helium production revealed an external helium flux from the crustal basement except for the in-situ production from sedimentary strata even in this broadly-defined self-generating and self-preserving natural gas system. The helium resources in the Qaidam Basin are mainly distributed in tectonically active zones with uplifted pre-Jurassic basement rocks (providing sufficient helium sources), ancient groundwater system (accumulating more helium) and suitable hydrocarbon production (acting as a carrier gas but diluting helium as slightly as possible).

Spatial variations in groundwater hydrochemistry, sources, and controls across catchments on Chinese Loess Plateau

Study focusUnderstanding groundwater hydrochemistry and its controlling factors in regions like CLP with thick unsaturated zones is challenging due to limited accessibility. The primary objective of this study was to investigate groundwater hydrochemistry, sources, and controls, and assess groundwater suitability for drinking and irrigation purposes across 14 major catchments in CLP. New hydrological insights for the regionOur results showed that the composition of groundwater dissolved solutes is primarily influenced by weathering rock, particularly silicate rock. However, human activities, especially in agriculture and urban areas, also have a notable impact on groundwater solutes. The presence of elevated nitrate in groundwater in various regions underscores the urgency of addressing long-term nitrogen pollution. Environmental changes such as climate change, erosion rates, and land-use patterns are key factors shaping groundwater quality. As air temperature decreases and erosion intensifies, along with more intensive land use, ion concentrations in groundwater tend to rise. Note that, approximately 91% of groundwater in CLP is suitable for direct drinking, but ensuring proper drainage is crucial to prevent sodium damage during irrigation. These findings enhance our understanding of the factors influencing groundwater solutes and are essential for effectively managing groundwater quality in CLP.

New insights into defluoridation via induced crystallization: Implications of phosphate species regulation for process efficiency and economics

Excess fluoride (F) at low concentrations in groundwater remains a challenge. F removal via fluidized-bed induced crystallization has been receiving increasing attention; however, the precipitant cannot be fully utilized. This results in generation of by-products, inadvertently increases the treatment cost, and impedes the assessment of product purity. In this study, phosphate species regulation was employed to improve the F removal efficiency without decreasing the phosphate utilization efficiency. It shows that F concentration could be reduced from 4.75 to 0.45 mg·L−1, with P concentration in the effluent being only 0.05 mg·L−1 at a P:F molar ratio of 3, involving appropriately mixed phosphate species. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystallization, subsequent F adsorption, and directly induced fluorapatite (FAP) crystallization occurred simultaneously in the fluidized bed, which was indirectly confirmed through intermittent operation of the process. The products of the induced crystallization process were FAP and a small amount of HAP, as determined qualitatively using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests. Overall, by regulating the phosphate species, the F removal efficiency is maintained, the cost of the precipitant is lowered, and the residual P concentration in the effluent is reduced. The process results in products with FAP as the main component, which can be used as raw material for the phosphoric acid purification process.

Land-use interactions, Oil-Field infrastructure, and natural processes control hydrocarbon and arsenic concentrations in groundwater, Poso Creek Oil Field, California, USA

Like many hydrocarbon production areas in the U.S., the Poso Creek Oil Field in California includes and is adjacent to other land uses (agricultural and other developed lands) that affect the hydrology and geochemistry of the aquifer overlying and adjacent to oil development. We hypothesize that the distributions of hydrocarbons and arsenic in groundwater in such areas will be controlled by complex interactions between mixed land uses, oil-field infrastructure, and natural processes. In 2020–2021, samples of groundwater and surface water were collected and analyzed for a large suite of inorganic and organic chemicals and isotope and gas tracers to test this hypothesis. Those data are supplemented with ancillary data on historical geochemistry, hydrology, geology, and oil-field infrastructure. Hydrocarbons in groundwater (e.g., methane through pentane gases and benzene) are associated with natural processes (e.g., fault offsets or transition in sediment depositional environment) and oil-field infrastructure (e.g., fluid-migration pathways associated with uncemented annulus in oil wells or unlined pits). Arsenic concentrations >10 μg per liter (μg/L; maximum concentration 12.9 μg/L) are associated with natural processes in old, high-pH groundwater, and more recent recharge of water from natural and/or engineered recharge processes. Along the southwest margin of the oil field, pumping for drinking-water and irrigation supplies in combination with engineered groundwater recharge produce a depression in groundwater elevations where groundwater with elevated sulfate concentrations from agricultural areas and groundwater with hydrocarbons from the oil field mix to produce a zone of sulfate reduction that removes hydrocarbons and arsenic from groundwater but produces elevated sulfide (S2-) concentrations (maximum concentration 29 mg per liter, mg/L). In this study, multiple approaches were required to resolve the overlapping effects of land uses, oil-field infrastructure, and natural processes on the distributions of hydrocarbons and arsenic in groundwater. The combined use of geographic, historical, physical, chemical, isotopic, and other information to constrain processes could be a useful approach for studies in other hydrocarbon-production areas. This is particularly important where land uses affect aquifer hydrology to an extent that causes mixing of groundwaters with different chemical compositions.

Hydrological and biogeochemical processes controlling riparian groundwater quantity and quality during riverbank filtration

Groundwater exploitation in a riparian zone causes water infiltration from the river into the aquifer. Owing to adsorption and redox reactions along the flow path, the quality of water flowing from the river to groundwater wells is variably altered. The riverbed composition often involves spatiotemporal differences due to frequent changes in hydrological conditions. These changes create uncertainties in the transport and removal of solutes in the river water. In this study, the hydrodynamic field associated with riparian groundwater, changes in the structure of riverbed sediments caused by erosion and deposition, fluctuations in surface water and groundwater levels, and the removal efficiency of pollutants from groundwater through pumping were investigated. This involved in situ monitoring and sample testing of the composition of the river water, riverbed sediments, riverbed pore water, and groundwater during dry and wet seasons. Implementation of field in situ column experiments and molecular biology evidences were conducive to identifying the main biogeochemical processes occurring in the riverbed. The findings indicated that riparian groundwater exploitation alters the natural groundwater flow field, while fine sand deposition and microbial adsorption can reduce river recharge to aquifers by diminishing riverbed hydraulic conductivity. Shallow sediments within 1 m depth mainly involve NO3− reduction and E. coli adsorption. Reductive dissolution of Mn dominates in the deeper sediments. Additionally, reductive dissolution of Fe and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) drive high Fe2+ and NH4+ concentrations in groundwater. The findings can improve the management of riparian groundwater and aid in the optimization of a plan for its exploitation.

Assessing the impacts and contamination potentials of landfill leachate on adjacent groundwater systems

Landfilling is a globally prevalent method for managing municipal solid waste disposal. Nonetheless, the potential for serious contamination and the significant regional disparities in the leachate produced pose varying degrees of risks to groundwater quality. Previous studies have focused on a single landfill or the same geo-climatic conditions, with a limited number of samples having resulted in a narrow distribution of landfill age and scale, which prevents the description of the pattern of change in landfill age and scale. As well as the effect of this change on the contaminants in the landfill leachate and surrounding groundwater is still unclear. Therefore, we sampled and analyzed leachate and surrounding groundwater from 62 landfills with different landfill ages, scales, and operating conditions in a region with dense and varied topography and climate. Aim to explore the effects of different landfill ages, scales, and operating conditions on contaminants in leachate and surrounding groundwater. Findings indicate that pollutant profiles in different media are influenced by the age, scale, and operational status of the landfill, and the impact of leachate on pollutant types and concentrations in groundwater is limited. A significant correlation exists between the concentration of contaminants in the groundwater affected by leaching from the impermeable layer and the age and scale of the landfill when compared to the leachate. The contamination potentials posed by different pollutants vary across environmental media. Total dissolved solids and NH4+-N in leachate presented high contamination potentials, whereas elemental metalloids (Mn, Al, Ba, and Fe) in the surrounding groundwater posed high environmental concerns. These insights furnish new avenues for monitoring, identification, and safeguarding against pollutants in landfills and proximate groundwater, which is imperative for the sustainable management of municipal waste.

Deciphering the spatial heterogeneity of groundwater arsenic in Quaternary aquifers of the Central Yangtze River Basin

Significant spatial variability of groundwater arsenic (As) concentrations in South/Southeast Asia is closely associated with sedimentogenesis and biogeochemical cycling processes. However, the role of fine-scale differences in biogeochemical processes under similar sedimentological environments in controlling the spatial heterogeneity of groundwater As concentrations is poorly understood. Within the central Yangtze Basin, dissolved organic matter (DOM) and microbial functional communities in the groundwater and solid-phase As-Fe speciation in Jianghan Plain (JHP) and Jiangbei Plain (JBP) were compared to reveal mechanisms related to the spatial heterogeneity of groundwater As concentration. The optical signatures of DOM showed that low molecular terrestrial fulvic-like with highly humified was predominant in the groundwater of JHP, while terrestrial humic-like and microbial humic-like with high molecular weight were predominant in the groundwater of JBP. The inorganic carbon isotope, microbial functional communities, and solid-phase As-Fe speciation suggest that the primary process controlling As accumulation in JHP groundwater system is the degradation of highly humified OM by methanogens, which drive the reductive dissolution of amorphous iron oxides. While in JBP groundwater systems, anaerobic methane-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM) coupled with fermentative bacteria, iron reduction bacteria (IRB), and sulfate reduction bacteria (SRB) utilize low molecular weight DOM degradation to drive biotic/abiotic reduction of Fe oxides, further facilitating the formation of carbonate associated Fe and crystalline Fe oxides, resulting in As release into groundwater. Different biogeochemical cycling processes determine the evolution of As-enriched aquifer systems, and the coupling of multiple processes involving organic matter transformation‑iron cycling‑sulfur cycling-methane cycling leads to heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of As concentrations in groundwater. These findings provide new perspectives to decipher the spatial variability of As concentrations in groundwater.

Emerging nitrate contamination in groundwater: Changing phase in a fast-growing state of India

The consumption of nitrate-contaminated groundwater is often associated with potential health risks, particularly in children. This study aimed to assess the hydrochemistry and nitrate contamination in groundwater of Kerala state, India for the years 2010 and 2018 and evaluate the potential human health risks due to nitrate exposure in adults, and children through oral ingestion and dermal contact pathways. Nitrate-contaminated zones were identified by spatial mapping of nitrate concentration based on groundwater quality data of 324 wells. Groundwater is typically acidic to slightly alkaline, and the electrical conductivity (EC) varied from 33 to 1180 μS/cm in 2010 and 34.6–2500 mg/L in 2018 indicating a noticeable increase over the years. Most samples fall within low salt enrichment category. The nitrate concentration in groundwater varied from 0 to 173 mg/L with a mean of 15.4 mg/L during 2010 and 0 to 244 with a mean of 20.3 mg/L during 2018. Though nitrate concentrations show uneven spatial distributions due to both natural and anthropogenic sources, the spatial clustering of higher concentrations remains almost same in both periods. In 2010, non-carcinogenic risk, as measured by Health Index Total (HITotal) values in groundwater for the investigated region, ranged from 0.005 to 4.170 (mean of 0.349) for males, 0.005 to 4.928 (mean of 0.413) for females, and 0.008 to 7.243 (mean of 0.607) for children, while in 2018, the corresponding values varied from 0.001 to 5.881 (mean of 0.501) for males, 0.002 to 6.950 (mean of 0.592) for females, and 0.003 to 10.215 (mean of 0.870) for children, indicating a substantial increase in risk, for females and children. Greater health risk is observed in children during both the periods. The findings emphasize the need for proper water quality management, especially in regions with higher vulnerability to nitrate pollution, to safeguard human health and well-being.

Adsorption of cyanide from Cassava wastewater using activated carbons derived from Raphia hookeri kernels: a comparison of in-situ and ex-situ activation

The rise in cyanide concentration in groundwater in many developing countries is linked to the indiscriminate discharge of cyanide-bearing wastewater from cassava processing industries. This research synthesized a super-active activated carbon (AC) from a novel biomass precursor, Raphia hookeri kernel, functionalized with phosphoric acid via in-situ and ex-situ methods. Morphological and functional characterizations were performed, and the influence of some key process variables on cyanide adsorption was also investigated for the two derived ACs to study the impact of the activation method used. The optimal conditions for cyanide adsorption for the in-situ and ex-situ–derived ACs were identified as pH 8, AC dose of 0.15 g, temperature of 40 °C, and initial cyanide concentration of 100 mgL−1 at different equilibrium times of 100 min and 120 min, respectively. The kinetic studies revealed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted the adsorption data better for the two ACs based on the high correlation coefficients (r2), suggesting that the adsorption process is chemisorption. The equilibrium studies showed that the in-situ-derived AC followed the Langmuir isotherm with a maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of 93.821 mgg−1 indicating monolayer adsorption for the in-situ-derived AC. The ex-situ-derived AC, however, followed the Sips isotherm with a maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of 79.381 mgg−1 indicating a heterogeneous surface for the ex-situ-derived AC. The ACs showed decreasing cyanide adsorption after five cycles but maintained significant adsorption capacity after desorption-adsorption cycles.

Investigation of the relationship between the decline in well waters radon anomalies and the earthquake magnitude (Mw)

AbstractAfyonkarahisar and its surroundings are in the middle of the Akşehir-Simav Fault System. Before the earthquakes in the region, radon anomalies were observed in some well waters. Linear equations between radon minima and earthquake magnitudes (Mw) were obtained, and correlation coefficients (R2) were calculated. The correlation coefficient (R2) values of the wells from 1 to 6 were obtained as 0.93, 0.83, 0.82, 0.97, 0.87 and 0.85, respectively. Good correlations (high R2 values) were obtained between the radon minimum and the earthquake magnitude (Mw) in 6 wells. The precursory minimum observed at the radon concentration in groundwater decreased as the earthquake's magnitude increased.

Identifying the Hydrochemical Characteristics, Genetic Mechanisms and Potential Human Health Risks of Fluoride and Nitrate Enriched Groundwater in the Tongzhou District, Beijing, North China

AbstractFluoride and nitrate enriched groundwater are potential threats to the safety of the groundwater supply that may cause significant effects on human health and public safety, especially in aggregated population areas and economic hubs. This study focuses on the high F– and NO3– concentration groundwater in Tongzhou District, Beijing, North China. A total of 36 groundwater samples were collected to analyze the hydrochemical characteristics, elucidate genetic mechanisms and evaluate the potential human health risks. The results of the analysis indicate: Firstly, most of the groundwater samples are characterized by Mg‐HCO3 and Na‐HCO3 with the pH ranging from 7.19 to 8.28 and TDS with a large variation across the range 471–2337 mg/L. The NO3– concentration in 38.89% groundwater samples and the F– concentration in 66.67% groundwater samples exceed the permissible limited value. Secondly, F– in groundwater originates predominantly from water‐rock interactions and the fluorite dissolution, which is also regulated by cation exchange, competitive adsorption of HCO3– and an alkaline environment. Thirdly, the effect of sewage disposal and agricultural activities have a significant effect on high NO3– concentration, while the high F– concentration is less influenced by anthropogenic activity. The alkaline environment favors nitrification, thus being conducive to the production of NO3–. Finally, the health risk assessment is evaluated for different population groups. The results indicate that high NO3– and F– concentration in groundwater would have the largest threat to children's health. The findings of this study could contribute to the provision of a scientific basis for groundwater supply policy formulation relating to public health in Tongzhou District.

Decoding degassing modes of magma chamber of arc volcanoes: Insights from CO2/Cl and Cl/H2O ratios of magmatic fluids in groundwater

The H2O-CO2-Cl composition of the fluids released from the magma chambers for arc volcanoes was calculated based on the solubilities of H2O and CO2 in the silicate melt and the partition coefficient of Cl between the aqueous fluid and melt for the stages defined by a simple evolution model of the magma chamber. The degassing modes consisted of mafic bubbling (MB: first boiling) and felsic bubbling (FB: second boiling) releasing fluids as separate bubbles due to the mafic magma supply and felsic magma formation by differentiation, respectively, and felsic solidification (FS) releasing fluid due to felsic pluton formation. The variations in the CO2/Cl and Cl/H2O ratios of the fluids were examined for each degassing mode at pressures ranging from 150 to 400 MPa and were found to have very large variations at 0.00024–845 for CO2/Cl and 0.00043–0.041 for Cl/H2O. The CO2/Cl is concluded to be a good indicator of magma chamber conditions because each mode has a specific ratio distinguished from that of the other modes; i.e., CO2/Cl > 43 for MB, 0.027–23 for FB, and < 0.62 for FS.The alteration of magmatic composition of fluid during ascent was discussed considering the phase separation of fluid, CO2 bubbling in groundwater, dissolution, and deposition of minerals; furthermore, the limitation of the method when applied to natural groundwater systems were outlined. This method was tested for a natural volcanic system, the Kuju volcano in central Kyusyu, Japan, which is an active volcano complex composed of various magma types from rhyolitic to basaltic, replacing the eruption centers from west to east. Groundwater samples from springs and boreholes were collected and analyzed for chemical and isotopic compositions to determine the magmatic H2O, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and Cl concentrations. The new approach to determine the magmatic CO2 concentration in groundwater using 3He concentration proposed herein cancelled the effect of carbonate deposition/dissolution, addition of DIC from organic matter, and bubbling of CO2. The estimated magmatic CO2/Cl ratios were 0.0009–14, which overlapped consistently with the modeled variation in the CO2/Cl ratio. The spatial variation of magmatic CO2/Cl in groundwater showed that higher-CO2/Cl are found near the central part of the volcanic complex which composed of felsic to mafic volcanoes, and low-CO2/Cl are only found around old felsic volcanoes. The CO2 bubbling springs were found to be associated with younger mafic volcanoes. The condition of the magma chambers, as shown by the spatial variation in CO2/Cl, were consistent with the record of the eruptive activities of the Kuju volcano. The CO2/Cl method proposed in this study using groundwater is useful for estimating magmatic conditions in chambers.

Bioremediation of Chlorate and Chromium in Soil Columns Using Contaminated Site Native Culture

AbstractChlorate and hexavalent chromium (chromate) are both widely used in different industries, and the improper waste management in the past left many sites with elevated concentrations in groundwater that pose potential risk to human and/or ecological health. Bioremediation is a sustainable management solution that can reduce both of these contaminants to less toxic species. In our earlier microcosms experiments, we have demonstrated that native microorganisms collected from a site contaminated with chlorate and chromate can lower the concentration of these chemicals in groundwater to acceptable regulatory levels provided sufficient electron donor, nitrogen, and phosphorous are provided. In this study, continuous flow column experiments were performed using soil from the site impacted by both chlorate and chromate in the Province of Manitoba (Canada) and synthetic groundwater amended with acetate, nitrogen, and phosphorous. The objective was to evaluate at a bench scale possibility of in‐situ groundwater treatment. Concentrations of chromate and chlorate measured in the columns' effluent water dropped by 86% and 96%, respectively. However, increased biomass and precipitation of trivalent chromium reduced the water flow rate in the columns, a concern for implementing this method as a long‐term in‐situ remediation solution.

Assessing nitrate groundwater hotspots in Europe reveals an inadequate designation of Nitrate Vulnerable Zones

Monitoring networks show that the European Union Nitrates Directive (ND) has had mixed success in reducing nitrate concentrations in groundwater. By combining machine learning and monitored nitrate concentrations (1992–2019), we estimate the total area of nitrate hotspots in Europe to be 401,000 km2, with 47% occurring outside of Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs). We also found contrasting increasing or decreasing trends, varying per country and time periods. We estimate that only 5% of the 122,000 km2 of hotspots in 2019 will meet nitrate quality standards by 2040 and that these may be offset by the appearance of new hotspots. Our results reveal that the effectiveness of the ND is limited by both time-lags between the implementation of good practices and pollution reduction and an inadequate designation of NVZs. Substantial improvements in the designation and regulation of NVZs are necessary, as well as in the quality of monitoring stations in terms of spatial density and information available concerning sampling depth, if the objectives of EU legislation to protect groundwater are to be achieved.

Integrated approach to understand the multiple natural and anthropogenic stresses on intensively irrigated coastal aquifer in the Mediterranean region

Understanding the major factors influencing groundwater chemistry and its evolution in irrigation areas is crucial for efficient irrigation management. Major ions and isotopes (δD-H2O together with δ18O–H2O) were used to identify the natural and anthropogenic factors contributing to groundwater salinization in the shallow aquifer of the Wadi Guenniche Plain (WGP) in the Mediterranean region of Tunisia. A comprehensive geochemical investigation of groundwater was conducted during both the low irrigation season (L-IR) and the high irrigation season (H-IR). The results show that the variation range and average concentrations of almost all the ions in both the L-IR and H-IR seasons are high. The groundwater in both seasons is characterized by high electrical conductivity and CaMgCl/SO4 and NaCl types. The dissolution of halite and gypsum, the precipitation of calcite and dolomite, and Na–Ca exchange are the main chemical reactions in the geochemical evolution of groundwater in the Wadi Guenniche Shallow Aquifer (WGSA). Stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen (δ18O–H2O and δD-H2O) indicate that groundwater in WGSA originated from local precipitation. In the H-IR season, the δ18O–H2O and δD-H2O values indicate that the groundwater experienced noticeable evaporation. The enriched isotopic signatures reveal that the WGSA's groundwater was influenced by irrigation return flow and seawater intrusion. The proportions of mixing with seawater were found to vary between 0.12% and 5.95%, and between 0.13% and 8.42% during the L-IR and H-IR seasons, respectively. Irrigation return flow and the associated evaporation increase the dissolved solids content in groundwater during the irrigation season. The long-term human activities (fertilization, irrigation, and septic waste infiltration) are the main drives of the high nitrate-N concentrations in groundwater. In coastal irrigation areas suffering from water scarcity, these results can help planners and policy makers understand the complexities of groundwater salinization to enable more sustainable management and development.
