Development of an efficient method for obtaining lactose and lactulose from whey

Taking into account a wide range of lactulose application in pharmaceutics, baby food production and other fields, along with the importance of technological solutions for its extraction from milk whey, the presented work was carried out to obtain lactulose in one cycle with simultaneous alkaline treatment and desalting of whey by the electromembrane method. Based on the data obtained, an effective method for obtaining a protein concentrate, lactose, and its isomer – lactulose from whey has been developed. The processes of pre-treatment and desalting of milk whey by the electromembrane method were studied and the optimal parameters for the processes implementation were determined. The curves of changes in the concentration of inorganic ions in whey in the desalination process, depending on the degree of demineralization, were plotted.

Effect and mechanism of a concentration-dependent inorganic ion biomimetic periosteum in a repairing bone defect

An inorganic ion functionalized biomimetic periosteum constitutes a new strategy for the design and application of new bone repair materials. However, the effect of cumulative concentration of inorganic ions (e.g. inorganic ion (Si4+)) on bone immune microenvironment in promoting bone repair is still unclear. Here, we used different mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) contents and a methacrylic acid gelatin (GelMA) organic–inorganic double crosslinking techniques to construct low, medium, and high content inorganic ion biomimetic periosteum. As the inorganic ion concentration increased, the compression modulus of LM@G, MM@G, and HM@G (1, 3, and 5 wt% MBGNs, respectively) was 1.6, 3.2, and 2.1 times higher than that of the GelMA hydrogel and the Si4+ release was 35.4 ± 0.4, 59.5 ± 0.2, and 71.5 ± 1.2 ppm in vitro, respectively. The ERK1/2 and p65 inhibition in the HM@G was 51.9% and 40.2% higher than that in the LM@G; however, the stem cell recruitment was about 85.2% lower than that in the LM@G, and the vascular germination degree was 35.4% lower than that in the MM@G. Contradiction between immune regulation and bone repair was found. However, the anti-inflammation in the MM@G was 30.8%, 30.1% higher than that in the LM@G, and stem cell recruitment and vascular sprouting were 3.4 and 1.6 times higher, respectively than those in the HM@G. In summary, the anti-inflammatory effect of MM@G group is stronger than that of LM@G group, and the effect of stem cell recruitment is more significant than that of HM@G group. We not only explore the biological mechanism of Si4+ coordinating macrophages and stem cells to promote bone repair, but also provide research basis for designing inorganic ion based immunofunctional biomaterials.

Comparative Analysis of Real-Emitted Particulate Matter and PM-Bound Chemicals from Residential and Automotive Sources: A Case Study in Poland

The awareness of environmental pollution has been continuously growing in recent decades and is currently reaching its maximum. Europe and most developed countries are determined to ensure safe breathing air for their citizens, and the measures to do so are stricter than ever before. Combustion procedures remain the primary means of producing energy and warmth in Poland. Among the notable constituents of flue gases produced as a result of fuel combustion, solid particles (or particulate matter) hold significant prominence. The paper presents the chemical characterisation of particulate matter emitted from stationary and automotive emission sources. Stationary emission sources included the combustion process of fossil fuels (soft wood, bituminous coal, ecopea coal, culm) in domestic heating units and the process of combustion of bituminous coal in a power plant. Automotive emission sources included light duty and medium duty vehicles fuelled by diesel. Exhaust toxicity tests were carried out maintaining the real conditions of PM emission. In all field measurements particulate matter was gravimetrically measured and collected on quartz or glass fibre filters. Subsequently, the content of carbonaceous fraction, inorganic ions, and metals and metalloids was analyzed using different analytical techniques. The chemical composition of the particulate matter differed depending on the emission source. With respect to stationary combustion sources, the main factors determining solid particle emission are related primarily to the fuel quality. The duty of vehicles was also a factor that influenced the chemical characterisation of the particulate matter emitted from the engines.

Climatology of aerosol properties at an atmospheric monitoring site on the northern California coast

Abstract. Between April 2002 and June 2017, the Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) made continuous measurements of a suite of in situ aerosol optical properties at a long-term monitoring site near Trinidad Head (THD), California. In addition to aerosol optical properties, between 2002–2006 a scanning humidograph system was operated, and inorganic ion and total aerosol mass concentrations were obtained from filter measurements. A combined analysis of these datasets demonstrates consistent patterns in aerosol climatology and highlights changes in sources throughout the year. THD is predictably dominated by sea salt aerosols; however, marine biogenic aerosols are the largest contributor to PM1 in the warmer months. Additionally, a persistent combustion source appears in the winter, likely a result of wintertime home heating. While the influences of local anthropogenic sources from vehicular and marine traffic are visible in the optical aerosol data, their influence is largely dictated by the wind direction at the site. Comparison of the THD aerosol climatology to that reported for other marine sites shows that the location is representative of clean marine measurements, even with the periodic influence of anthropogenic sources.

Atmospheric Oxidation Capacity and Its Impact on the Secondary Inorganic Components of PM2.5 in Recent Years in Beijing: Enlightenment for PM2.5 Pollution Control in the Future

In recent years, the concentrations of PM2.5 in urban ambient air in China have been declining; however, the strong atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) represents challenges to the further reduction of PM2.5 concentration and the continuous improvement of ambient air quality in China in the future, since the overall AOC is still at a high level. For this paper, based on ground observation data recorded in Beijing from 2016 to 2019, the variation in AOC was characterized according to the concentration of odd oxygen (OX = O3 + NO2). The concentrations of the primary and secondary components of PM2.5 were analyzed using empirical formulas, the correlation between AOC and the concentrations of secondary PM2.5 and the secondary inorganic components (SO42−, NO3−, NH4+, and SNA) in Beijing were explored, the impact of atmospheric photochemical reaction activity on the generation of atmospheric secondary particles was evaluated, and the impact of atmospheric oxidation variations on PM2.5 concentrations and SNA in Beijing was investigated. The results revealed that OX concentrations reached their peak in 2016 and reached their lowest point in 2019. The OX concentrations followed a descending seasonal trend of summer, spring, autumn, and winter, along with a spatial descending trend from urban observation stations to suburban stations and background stations. The degree of photochemical activity and the magnitude of the AOC have a large influence on the production of atmospheric secondary particles. When the photochemical reaction was more active and the AOC was stronger, the mass concentrations of the secondary generated PM2.5 fraction were higher and accounted for a higher proportion of the total PM2.5 mass concentrations. In the PM2.5 fraction, SNA accounted for 50.7% to 94.4% of the total mass concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions in the field observations. Higher concentrations of the atmospheric oxidant OX in ambient air corresponded to a higher sulfur oxidation ratio (SOR) and nitrogen oxidation ratio (NOR), suggesting that the increase in AOC could promote the increase of PM2.5 concentration. Based on a relationship analysis of SOR, NOR, and OX, it was inferred that the relationship between OX and SOR and the relationship between OX and NOR were both nonlinear. Therefore, when establishing PM2.5 control strategies in Beijing in the future, the impact of the AOC on PM2.5 generation should be fully considered, and favorable measures should be taken to properly regulate the AOC, which would be more effective when carrying out further control measures regarding PM2.5 pollution.

Multivariate effect of inorganic wastewater matrix on the removal of pesticides by solar photo-Fenton

An amount of works has reported the effect of wastewater matrix composition on pollutants removal by different AOPs. The biggest challenge is that each wastewater source has a challenging composition (organic and inorganic compounds, pollutants, etc.) and not only the concentration of all these species but also the interaction between them may affect the effectiveness of the studied process. This work has been carried out to evaluate the photo-degradation kinetics of six different pesticides (flutriafol, imidacloprid, myclobutanil, pirimicarb, thiamethoxam and triadimenol) by solar photo-Fenton (SPF) process at acidic pH. First, oxidant concentration (H2O2) was optimized with an actual WWTP effluent. Then, the process was validated with two different secondary and tertiary WWTP effluents, in which main intermediate transformation by-products were identified. Finally, the effect of the inorganic water matrix components (bicarbonate, chloride, sulphate, nitrate and phosphate) was evaluated by a multivariate analysis. Once H2O2 has been optimized at 30 mg L−1, the photo-degradation efficiency of pesticides in real wastewater samples was compared. DOC content of both secondary and tertiary WWTP effluents was dropped by 67%. The identification of the main intermediate transformation by-products (such as 1H-1,2,4-triazole, desmethyl-formamido pirimicarb, thiamethoxam urea, chloronicotinic acid and imidacloprid urea) was reviewed. Following, the multivariate analysis on pesticides photo-degradation, generally, predicted four significant effects in common for the studied pesticides: a positive effect (interaction bicarbonate/nitrate) and three negative ones (chloride, phosphate and the interaction chloride/sulphate); among others. In addition, optimum values of inorganic ion concentrations, to obtain an optimum desirability on studied pesticides removal by SPF at acidic pH, were also evaluated.

An integrated approach to assessing the ecological state of urban park soils, Kirov, Russia

Aim. Assess the ecological state of soils in park areas and public gardens in the city of Kirov, Kirov region, Russia, which are located near areas of heavy traffic, using an integrated approach based on data from physicochemical, microbiological analyzes and biotesting.Material and Methods. Soil samples were taken at various sites in the 60th Anniversary of the USSR Square, in the S.M. Kirov Park and in the 50th Anniversary of the Komsomol Park. The concentration of inorganic ions and the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soils were determined by ionic and high‐performance liquid chromatography, respectively. The total content of heavy metals (HM)was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Quantitative registration of microorganisms was carried out by the method of limiting dilutions with subsequent inoculation on selective nutrient media. Biotesting was carried out using the protozoa Paramecium caudatum and the Ecolum bacterial test system.Results. The features of the ionic composition of soils in Kirov parks were studied. In the aqueous extract of the studied soils, sulphate and chloride ions predominated among anions, and calcium ions among cations. Among the groups of microorganisms studied, ammonifying bacteria take the leading positions, the share of which in the microbial complex reaches 65.35–86.54%. There is a close relationship between the content of nutrients and the number of ammonifiers. The gross concentration of HMs in soil samples from parks in Kirov did not exceed their approximate permissible concentration, while the content of Pb, Zn, and Cо was up to 3.1 times higher than the regional background. The highest content of PAHs, maximum values of total carcinogenic activity and toxicity to P. caudatum were found in soil samples taken from areas near highways. Conclusion. The ecological state of urban park soils in Kirov in general can be characterised as satisfactory. Nevertheless, for park soils in the immediate vicinity of highways, increased values of PAH concentration were revealed. Determination of the PAH content in soils can be recommended for inclusion in the environmental monitoring programme in cities because of the persistence of PAHs in the environment, their mutagenic and carcinogenic properties, and the lack of standards for the content of most PAHs in natural environments.

Exploration of plant growth promoting traits and regulatory mechanisms of Bacillus anthracis PM21 in enhancing salt stress tolerance in maize.

Bacillus species have been reported to reduce the negative effects of salt stress on plants; the involvement of Bacillus anthracis PM21 and the internal mechanisms involved in this process are unclear. The effects of PM21 inoculation on maize plants under salt stress were investigated in this study. The study aimed to assess the ability of Bacillus anthracis PM21 to endure high levels of salinity stress while preserving the concentration of plant growth regulators. The biomass, photosynthetic pigments, relative water content (RWC), antioxidants, osmoprotectants, inorganic ion contents, regulation of plant hormones and expression of antioxidants enzyme encoded genes were investigated under normal and salinity stress conditions. Bacillus anthracis PM21 produced a significant amount of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase enzyme (ACC deaminase) and exopolysaccharides (EPS) under salt stress and normal conditions. PM21 also produced plant growth stimulants including indole acetic acid, gibberellic acid (GA3), kinetin, and siderophore under salinity stress and normal conditions. Under salt stress, PM21 inoculation markedly increased plant growth indices, stimulate antioxidant enzyme mechanisms, osmoprotectants, and chlorophyll content. The use of qRT-PCR to analyze the transcription of targeted genes indicated greater expression of antioxidant-encoded genes and inferred their possible function in salinity stress tolerance. Our findings shed light on the functions of PM21 and its regulatory mechanisms in plant salt stress tolerance, as well as the importance of PM21 in this process. This study will provide a thorough analysis of the theoretical framework for adopting PM21 in agricultural production as an eco-friendly method to enhance crop growth and yield under salinity stress.

22. The Role of Orai1 in Osteogenic Differentiation Induced by Nanoparticulate Mineralized Collagen Glycosaminoglycan Materials

PURPOSE: Development of synthetic regenerative materials inspired by the extracellular matrix (ECM) has been a topic of significant interest due to the known properties of the ECM to direct cell fate determination via tunable material composition and biomechanical properties. Nanoparticulate mineralized collagen glycosaminoglycan (MC-GAG) is a low density, open-cell foam that has been evaluated in our laboratory to induce osteogenic differentiation of primary osteoprogenitors in vitro as well as regeneration of rabbit skull defects in vivo without pre-seeding with progenitor cells or addition of exogenous growth factors, which was not observed in non-mineralized collagen glycosaminoglycan (Col-GAG) materials. Given that the critical difference between MC-GAG and Col-GAG is the mineral content, the spatial concentration of inorganic ions on MC-GAG may be critical to its osteogenic properties. This is supported by prior research demonstrating that high calcium concentrations in the bone microenvironment stimulate osteoblastic differentiation. How these biochemical cues are transmitted to cells and activate downstream osteogenic signaling pathways should be further elucidated. Orai1 is a critical subunit of store-operated calcium release-activated calcium channels (CRAC) that has been implicated to be involved in bone homeostasis. In this work, we evaluated the contribution of Orai1 to MC-GAG-mediated osteogenesis. METHODS: To examine the role of extracellular calcium signaling through store-operated calcium channels, such as Orai1, on osteogenic differentiation of primary bone marrow-derived human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), we treated 2D cell cultures with a small molecule inhibitor of store-operated calcium entry (SOCE), MRS1845, for 14 days. hMSCs were subsequently seeded on MC-GAG or Col-GAG for 7 days with or without MRS1845. Baseline Orai1 gene and protein expression was evaluated. Next, small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) targeting ORAI1 and a scrambled control were used to specifically knockdown ORAI1 expression in hMSCs cultured on Col-GAG and MC-GAG. Osteogenic gene and protein expression were measured using quantitative RT-PCR and western blot analyses, respectively. Mineralization was evaluated by Alizarin Red staining. RESULTS: To understand whether store-operated calcium entry was essential to osteogenic differentiation, we treated hMSCs in 2D cultures with a small molecule inhibitor of SOCE, MRS1845, and found a reduction in calcium depositions visualized with Alizarin Red staining when compared to untreated hMSCs. In 3D cultures, MRS1845 downregulated the gene expression of early osteogenic marker ALP and protein expression of the intracellular osteogenic mediator Runx2 specifically on MC-GAG compared to controls. As small molecule inhibitors lack channel specificity, we knocked down ORAI1 expression through siRNA transfection. When MC-GAG was compared with Col-GAG, baseline ORAI1 gene expression was 1.8-fold higher (p=0.02) and Orai1 protein expression was upregulated (p=0.003). ORAI1 knockdown reduced the protein expression of Runx2 and gene expression of late osteogenic marker BSP2 specifically on MC-GAG compared to scrambled control siRNA. Mineralization significantly diminished on MC-GAG with ORAI1 knockdown, whereas no effects were evident on Col-GAG as demonstrated by Alizarin Red staining. CONCLUSIONS: ORAI1-mediated calcium ion signaling was required for MC-GAG-induced osteogenic differentiation. Further elucidation of the osteogenic mechanisms and refinement of calcium levels on MC-GAG may facilitate its clinical application in the reconstruction of osseous defects.

Quality and Safety of Ready-to-Eat Golden Thistle (Scolymus hispanicus L.): A New Product for Traditional Italian Dishes.

Golden thistle (Scolymus hispanicus L.) is a wild edible plant belonging to Asteraceae family, with a great potential for food applications. The aim of this study was to identify the best cooking procedure able to provide a high-quality, ready-to-use product. For this purpose, leaf midribs (the most used edible part of the plant) were cooked by boiling, steaming, and 'sous vide', and the cooked products were compared for their phenolic content and composition, antioxidant activity, sugar and inorganic ion content, organoleptic characteristics, and microbial safety, this latter also during storage. In general, boiling caused a decrease in the value of these parameters, despite being the best product for taste and overall acceptability. On the contrary, steaming and 'sous vide' resulted in the best treatments to preserve antioxidant activity, total phenols, and chlorogenic acid. In particular, in 'sous vide' cooked samples, a significant increase in the value of these parameters and a remarkable decrease in nitrate content were found. Moreover, 'sous vide' resulted in the best treatment also regarding microbial safety during shelf life; actually, after 15 days of storage at 8 °C, Enterobacteriaceae and mesophilic aerobic bacteria were not detectable in 'sous vide' samples. These results contributed to increase the knowledge of a wild edible plant with high nutritional properties and promoting its consumption by obtaining a ready-to-use product with good organoleptic characteristics and endowed with a long period of shelf life.

Overlooked effect of ordinary inorganic ions on polyaluminum-chloride coagulation treatment

Application of poly-aluminum chloride (PACl) coagulant is a popular mode of water treatment worldwide because of the high capacity of PACl to neutralize charge. The manufacture and use of PACls with various basicities in different regions around the world suggest that the characteristics of the raw water are important determinants of the efficacy of PACl application. However, attention has not been fully paid to the effects of water quality other than the substances to be removed. In this study, two typical PACls with different basicities were used to investigate why the performance of PACls depends on the characteristics of the raw water. We focused on the concentrations of inorganic ions in the raw water. Use of high-basicity PACl (HB-PACl) with a high content of polymeric-colloidal species (Alb+Alc) resulted in very slow floc formation and little turbidity removal in raw water with low concentrations of sulfate ions. The performance of the HB-PACl was inferior to that of normal-basicity PACl (NB-PACl), although the charge-neutralization capacity of the HB-PACl was higher. Rates of floc formation were strongly correlated with the rate of aluminum precipitation by hydrolysis reaction, which was identified as an indicator for evaluating the compatibility of raw water with PACl treatment. Among the common ions in natural water, the sulfate ion had the greatest ability to hydrolyze and precipitate PACl because of its divalency and tetrahedral structure. This conclusion followed from experimental results showing similar effects for selenate and chromate ions as for sulfate ions and somewhat smaller effects for thiosulfate ions. Bicarbonate ions and natural organic matter affected PACl hydrolysis-precipitation, but chloride ions, nitrate ions, and cations had little effect on PACl hydrolysis-precipitation. Interestingly, the abilities of sulfate ions to hydrolyze HB-PACl and NB-PACl were very similar, but bicarbonate ions were less effective in hydrolyzing HB-PACl than NB-PACl, and bicarbonate ions contributed little to the hydrolysis-precipitation of HB-PACl in raw water with normal alkalinity. Therefore, sufficient coagulation with HB-PACl therefore usually requires a certain concentration of sulfate ions in water to be treated. The implication is that which anions are most influential to the hydrolysis-precipitation of PACl, and thus to PACl's coagulation ability depends on the constituents of the PACl.

Identification of CNGCs in Glycine max and Screening of Related Resistance Genes after Fusarium solani Infection.

Cyclic nucleotide-gated channels (CNGCs), non-selective cation channels localised on the plasmalemma, are involved in growth, development, and regulatory mechanisms in plants during adverse stress. To date, CNGC gene families in multiple crops have been identified and analysed. However, there have been no systematic studies on the evolution and development of CNGC gene families in legumes. Therefore, in the present study, via transcriptome analysis, we identified 143 CNGC genes in legumes, and thereafter, classified and named them according to the grouping method used for Arabidopsis thaliana. Functional verification for disease stress showed that four GmCNGCs were specifically expressed in the plasmalemma during the stress process. Further, functional enrichment analysis showed that their mode of participation and coordination included inorganic ion concentration regulation inside and outside the membrane via the transmembrane ion channel and participation in stress regulation via signal transduction. The CNGC family genes in G. max involved in disease stress were also identified and physiological stress response and omics analyses were also performed. Our preliminary results revealed the basic laws governing the involvement of CNGCs in disease resistance in G. max, providing important gene resources and a theoretical reference for the breeding of resistant soybean.

Seasonal Variations, Size Distributions, and Sources of Chemical Components of Submicron Particulate Matter in Nanjing

Size-segregated particulate matter (PM) samples were collected in different seasons from 2016 to 2017 at the Xianlin Campus of Nanjing University. Mass concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions, carbonaceous components, and elements were analyzed for PM with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 1.1 μm (PM1.1; <0.4 μm, 0.4-0.7 μm, and 0.7-1.1 μm). The results showed that PM1.1, OC, NO3-, SO42-, and NH4+ exhibited higher ambient levels in fall-winter than those in spring-summer, which was attributed to the changes in local diffusion conditions, evaporation, and decomposition of non-refractory components. Elemental carbon (EC) reached its maximum concentration[(1.87±0.98) μg·m-3]in spring due to the increase in industrial and road dust resuspension. According to the characteristic ratio between bulk components, the anions in PM1.1 were dominated by NO3-, SO42-, and Cl- in Nanjing, and the carbonaceous components were mainly from fossil fuel combustions and associated aging processes. As the ambient temperature increased, the size distributions of thermo-unstable components including NH4+, NO3-, and OC shifted towards finer particles, whereas EC became more enriched in coarse particles, possibly due to the increase in emission intensity of motor vehicles and fugitive dust contributions. Since high relative humidity (>70%) is often accompanied by high temperature (>20℃) and improved diffusion conditions, a relative humidity of 60%-70% was more conducive to the formation of secondary inorganic ions in PM1.1. Source apportionment results based on the speciation data of PM1.1 showed that secondary formation processes[(66.6±18.3)%]and dust resuspension[(16.8±14.8)%]were the main contributors to PM1.1 in Nanjing, and further control of the emissions of gaseous precursors and dust is necessary.

High dietary lipid level promotes low salinity adaptation in the marine euryhaline crab (Scylla paramamosain).

The physiological processes involved in adaptation to osmotic pressure in euryhaline crustaceans are highly energy demanding, but the effects of dietary lipids (fat) on low salinity adaptations have not been well evaluated. In the present study, a total of 120 mud crabs (Scylla paramamosain, BW=17.87±1.49g) were fed control and high-fat (HF) diets, at both medium salinity (23‰) and low salinity (4‰) for 6wk, and each treatment had 3 replicates with each replicate containing 10 crabs. The results indicated that a HF diet significantly mitigated the reduction in survival rate, percent weight gain and feed efficiency induced by low salinity (P<0.05). Low salinity lowered lipogenesis and activated lipolysis resulting in lipid depletion in the hepatopancreas of mud crabs (P<0.05). Thus, HF diets enhanced the process of lipolysis to supply more energy. In the gills, low salinity and the HF diet increased the levels of mitochondrial biogenesis markers, the activity of mitochondrial complexes, and the expression levels of genes related to energy metabolism (P<0.05). Consequently, the positive effects of the HF diet on energy metabolism in mud crabs at low salinity promoted osmotic pressure regulation. Specifically, significantly higher haemolymph osmotic pressure and inorganic ion content, as well as higher osmotic pressure regulatory enzyme activity in gills, and gene and protein expression levels of NaK-ATPase were observed in crabs fed the HF diet at low salinity (P<0.05). In summary, high dietary lipid levels improved energy provision to facilitate mitochondrial biogenesis, which increased ATP provision for osmotic pressure regulation of mud crabs. This study also illustrates the importance of dietary lipid nutrition supplementation for low salinity adaptations in mud crabs.

Modern definition of bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics

Bioactive glasses (BGs) and glass-ceramics (BGCs) have become a diverse family of materials being applied for treatment of many medical conditions. The traditional understanding of bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics pins them to bone-bonding capability without considering the other fields where they excel, such as soft tissue repair. We attempt to provide an updated definition of BGs and BGCs by comparing their structure, processing, and properties to those of other biomaterials. The proposed modern definition allows for consideration of all applications where the BGs and BGCs are currently used in the clinic and where the future of these promising biomaterials will grow. The new proposed definition of a bioactive glass is “a non-equilibrium, non-crystalline material that has been designed to induce specific biological activity”. The proposed definition of a bioactive glass-ceramic is “an inorganic, non-metallic material that contains at least one crystalline phase within a glassy matrix and has been designed to induce specific biological activity.” BGs and BGCs can bond to bone and soft tissues or contribute to their regeneration in many applications such as orthopedic, dentistry and wound repair. They can also deliver a specified concentration of inorganic therapeutic ions, heat for magnetic-induced hyperthermia or laser-induced phototherapy, radiation for brachytherapy, and drug delivery to combat pathogens and cancers.

Interannual variation and chemical characterization of major water-soluble inorganic ions in snow across Northwest China

From November 2018 to April 2020, 438 snow samples were collected near two field observation sites in Heihe and Altay, Northwest China, and the pH and major water-soluble inorganic ions (Ca2+, SO42−, Na+, NO3−, Cl−, K+, Mg2+, and NH4+) were analyzed. To identify the source of ions, the enrichment factor method, Pearson correlation analysis, and HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single Practical Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) backward trajectory analysis were employed. The snow was nearly pH neutral, and Ca2+ was the dominant cation present. The anion concentration demonstrated high variability. Affected by geographical location and atmospheric circulation, the concentration of soluble inorganic ions in snow from the Altay region was higher than that in the Heihe region and remote areas at high altitude or high latitude. Compared with 2018/2019, ion concentrations in snow increased in 2019/2020, especially in the Altay region. Moreover, the temporal trend of ion concentrations was stable, indicating that the source and migration path of ions had strong consistency. Our study suggested that terrestrial sources are the main driving factors for the ions observed in snow samples from Northwest China, and some ions are also the result of anthropogenic sources (NH4+, SO42−, and NO3−), marine sources (Cl− and Na+), and salt mine dust (Cl−, Na+, SO42−, and K+).

Optimization of glutathione production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae HBSD-W08 using Plackett–Burman and central composite rotatable designs

BackgroundGlutathione is an important bioactive tripeptide and is widely used in the food, medicine, and cosmetics industries. The aim of this study was to provide an efficient method for producing GSH and to explore its synthesis mechanism. Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain HBSD-W08 was screened for GSH production, and its fermentation medium was optimized using single-factor experiments of the Plackett-Burman and central composite rotatable designs. This method was used to analyze the effects of the presence and concentration of various carbon sources, organic and inorganic nitrogen sources, metal ions, and precursor amino acids on GSH production and catalase, superoxide dismutase, and γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase activity.ResultsThe three most significant factors affecting GSH production were peptone (optimal concentration [OC]: 2.50 g L− 1), KH2PO4 (OC: 0.13 g L− 1), and glutamic acid (OC: 0.10 g L− 1). GSH productivity of HBSD-W08 was obtained at 3.70 g L− 1 in the optimized medium. The activity of γ-GCS, which is a marker for oxidative stress, was found to be highly positively correlated with GSH production.ConclusionsThis finding revealed an underlying relationship between GSH synthesis and oxidative stress, providing useful information for developing effective GSH fermentation control strategies.

Role of operating parameters in photoelectrocatalytic degradation of anticancer drugs: Ifosfamide, 5-fluorouracil and imatinib using CdS/TiO2

The ineffective removal of drugs in conventional wastewater treatment plants causes the search for new, effective and environmentally friendly methods. The promising alternatives consist photoelectrocatalysis. However, there is still lack of information about applied it for anticancer drugs removal and the influence of process conditions on its effectiveness. In the presented research CdS/TiO2 nanocomposite was applied in photoelectrocatalytic degradation of tree anticancer drugs: ifosfamide, 5-fluorouracil and imatinib. The effect of the process parameters such as applied potential, irradiation power, pH and conductivity of solution, drug concentration and presence of inorganic ions was investigated. It was shown that efficiency of drug degradation strongly increased with increasing irradiation power and with decreasing pH. The minor effect on the degradation efficiency of drug was observed with changing the potential and conductivity of the solution. In turn, presence of Cl−, NO3−, HCO3−, HPO42− in the treated solution acted as scavengers of hydroxyl radicals and decrease the decomposition rate. Studies on photoelectrocatalytic mechanism, shown that imatinib degradation occurs mainly as a result of holes activity, with slightly lower contribution of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. On the other hand, 5-fluorouracil was degraded mainly by the holes and hydroxyl radicals, the superoxide radicals had a marginal participation. Based on a identified by-products, degradation pathways for 5-fluorouracil and imatinib have been proposed. Finally, research confirmed decreasing eco-toxicity towards duckweed (Lemna minor) of drugs solutions treated by photoelectrocatalysis.

Characteristics of PM2.5 and secondary inorganic pollution formation during the heating season of 2021 in Beijing

Water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) were measured online in Beijing during the heating season of 2021, during which Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games were hosted. The characteristics of PM2.5 and water-soluble inorganic ions were investigated in general, as well as during the clean period, polluted period, and Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games periods. It was found that most of the polluted episodes occurred under conditions of low wind speed, temperature inversion, and high relative humidity. The total mass concentration of water-soluble inorganic ions during the polluted period and the clean period accounted for 38.2% and 61.4% of the PM2.5 mass concentration, respectively. Both the sulfur oxidation ratio (SOR) and nitrogen oxidation ratio (NOR) showed a strong relationship with relative humidity. During the polluted period, the concentrations of secondary aerosols such as sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium (SNA) increased significantly. Secondary transformation was enhanced compared with that in the clean period. A polluted process after a snowfall event was selected to explore the mechanism of sulfate and nitrate formation under high relative humidity. The results would be beneficial to understanding the causes of pollution and helping the government to formulate effective measures to control air pollution in winter.
