An assessment of the carbon emissions of China's ICT system from the demand and supply perspectives

Previous research has predominantly examined China's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry's carbon emissions through the lens of technological progress, overlooking impacts from both demand and supply perspectives. We employ a subsystem input-output model to analyze the total emissions of China's ICT industry from 2002 to 2020, decomposing them into direct, intra-sectoral, feedback, and spillover components from both perspectives. Our findings reveal that between 2002 and 2020, demand-driven emissions increased by 205.1 %, while supply-driven emissions surged by 496.4 %. From both demand and supply perspectives, the spillover component emerged as the dominant contributor from 2002 to 2020, particularly in 2020, accounting for more than 99 % of the total emissions. From a demand-driven perspective, we identify ICT manufacturing as the primary emissions source, contributing to over 66 % of the total emissions during the period and triggering significant spillover emissions in the power and heavy manufacturing sectors. Conversely, the supply-driven approach highlights ICT services as the major emitter, accounting for over 70 % of the total emissions between 2002 and 2020, with notable spillover effects observed in the transport sector. We highlight the significance of shaping consumption behaviors related to ICT manufacturing products and improving emissions efficiency in electricity and heavy manufacturing, both crucial intermediate inputs in ICT production, from a demand perspective. From a supply perspective, promoting the adoption of clean technologies among downstream users of ICT services could aid China's emissions mitigation efforts in the digital era.

Employers Feedback on the Performance of the College of Computing Studies, Information and Communication Technology (CCSICT) Graduates

This study is an assessment of the employer’s feedback on the performance of College of Computing Studies, Information and Communication Technology (CCSICT) graduates in the workplace with respect to quality and quantity of work, job knowledge, and working relationships.
 The study used a descriptive research method utilizing the employers of employed graduates as key informants. The respondents were purposely chosen who are managers or supervisors of companies and institutions of the graduates. Data from the 98 employers were gathered using a survey questionnaire. Weighted mean, frequency count, percentage, and rank were used to interpret the result of the survey.
 Results showed that graduates are employed in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry. This means that the graduates have jobs related to their course. The majority of employers who participated in the survey are from the private sector. Employers were very satisfied with the graduate's quality and quantity of work, job knowledge, and work relationship. The top attributes used to evaluate the graduates' performance were the quantity of work and the working relationships. The findings suggested putting emphasis on written and oral communication skills and improving networking, troubleshooting skills, and graphics and design skills.

AN OVERVIEW OF COMPONENTS FOR ENERGY EFFICIENT MULTIMEDIA NETWORKS BASED ON 5G RADIO ACCESS TECHNOLOGIES

Modern society is actively transitioning into an information-based one, and multimedia technologies have become an integral part of this process. Thanks to the proliferation of wireless access networks, users are becoming more mobile, and the development of the fifth generation of mobile networks, known as 5G, is a significant step in the advancement of information and communication technologies. 5G networks offer low latency and reliable connectivity, expanding the capabilities of mobile internet and machine communication. However, along with the opportunities provided by multimedia communication, there is a responsibility to consider the impact of associated technologies on the environment, as well as to address new challenges and the need for prudent resource utilization.
 The article defines the concept of "multimedia" and discusses various aspects of this concept, including digital storage and processing of information, components (text, photos, audio, and video), interactivity, and hypertextuality. It is noted that the transmission of multimedia data and the use of information technologies are closely linked to wireless access networks.
 The authors discuss challenges and solutions in the field of energy efficiency for networks. They provide statistics indicating that the information and communication technology (ICT) industry is responsible for a significant portion of global energy consumption and CO2 emissions, with radio access networks being a major contributor. Various components and technologies that can contribute to the development of energy-efficient multimedia networks based on 5G radio access technologies are examined. Specifically, heterogeneous networks, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technologies, and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies are highlighted as key components for achieving energy efficiency.
 The importance of using heterogeneous networks to reduce the distance between transmitters and receivers is emphasized, along with the possibility of putting small base stations into sleep mode when there is no network load. Technologies like NOMA and MIMO are discussed as crucial components for achieving spectral efficiency and energy efficiency.
 Additionally, the article focuses on wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and suggests ways to optimize them for energy efficiency. This includes operating sensor units only when necessary, implementing wireless charging, using energy-efficient optimization methods, and applying efficient routing schemes.
 The authors also highlight the role of green data centers in reducing CO2 emissions and optimizing the use of green energy in high-performance networks. Methods such as using renewable energy sources, increasing the energy efficiency of hardware, and implementing energy-efficient routing are discussed.
 In conclusion, the article underscores the importance of energy efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions in modern multimedia networks, particularly in the context of 5G networks. It calls for interdisciplinary efforts to address these critical challenges in the field of information and communication technologies.

Emerging ICT clusters in the Western Balkans: A convergence model based on financial statement analysis

The Western Balkans is experiencing an ongoing inflow of foreign direct investments (FDI) in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry as several European enterprises have already established their presence in the region. These inflows have generated large-scale ICT investments in the region, creating new knowledge-based clusters and technology spillovers in regional economies. On the basis of financial statement indicators collected for 327 European and regional ICT enterprises and on panel data estimation, this paper tries to estimate technology transfer in the Western Balkan region. Specifically, the proposed model examines cluster spillover effects in improving the absorptive capacity of the Western Balkan region in creating a pool of specialized local suppliers and a talented regional labor force. Model estimation results indicate that limited spillover effects have occurred from the newly created clusters of European ICT enterprises in the regional economy of the Western Balkan region. Spillovers related to improved technical capabilities, increased labor productivity, higher resource efficiency, and flexible operational structures require further stimulation to speed up convergence and integration of the local ICT industry in the corresponding European value chain. Finally, this paper concludes that competitive advantages such as a cheap labor force are no longer feasible for sustainable development. To narrow down the existing know-how gap, particular efforts are required regarding policies focused on educating human capital and transforming regional enterprises to successfully compete in the European market.

A Developed Multi-Level Deep Learning Model for Network Slicing Classification in 5G Network

5G is considered as a key contributor and infrastructure supplier in the communication technology industry, capable of supporting a wide range of services such as virtual reality, driverless automobiles, e-health, and a variety of intelligent applications. Network slicing is designed to support the diversity of services applications with increased performance and flexibility needs by dividing the physical network into many logical networks. Service classification allows 5G service providers to accurately select the network slices for each service. We propose a Network Slicing classifier that uses a Multi-level Deep learning Model. First, we created a dataset of 5G network slicing that contain attributes connected with various network services. Next, we performed a multi-level model that consist of a set of Machine learning and deep learning model (such as deep Neural Network, Random Forest and Decision Tree) as a first level followed by next level that which is represent Attentive Interpretable Tabular Learning model. The outcomes of the experiment showed that the proposed model was able to exceed the normal models with high performance results.

Smart traffic routing and service allocation strategy to reduce water consumption in data centers through power reduction

Due to the growth of communication networks, energy consumption in information and communication technology industries is increasing dramatically. Among these industries, data centers are operating with a large number of processors and other components, which, due to heavy processing and mass data transmission, in addition to consuming high electrical power, also cause high thermal losses. Since water cooling systems are used for cooling different parts of these centers as well as for cooling the electric power generation unit, these centers are among the major consumers of water and electricity resources. In this article, while examining the important factors affecting water consumption in data centers, useful methods are suggested to reduce the consumption of electrical energy and water. Optimizing energy consumption in data centers is possible in three parts: routing, servicing and use of cooling equipment. For all three parts, improvement methods are suggested in this article. For this purpose, an optimization problem is designed and an algorithm is presented to solve it. In the proposed solution, an energy-smart method based on SDN technology is used for routing, virtual machines equipped with the possibility of reducing power consumption in no-load conditions are used for servicing, and two types of water-cooled and air-cooled systems are used for cooling equipment. is used. The simulation results show that depending on the cooling system, the proposed method reduces water consumption between 24% and 32% compared to the case where the proposed solution is not used.

Factors Affecting Product Innovation in ICT Enterprises: A Comparison Between Vietnam and Hungary

The primary purpose of this research is to examine the driving forces behind product innovations in the information and communication technology industry in both Vietnamese and Hungarian contexts. The objective of this research project is to carefully dissect the complexities and multiplicity dimensions of the actors involved in the innovation procedure in the ICT firms located in these countries based on a highly organised mixed-method approach. Outcome expectations are expected to yield results beyond contributing positively to the pool of academic knowledge and practical gains that could be put into use at once within the sphere.

Research on the evolution and determinants of knowledge transfer network in patent-intensive industries

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the structural characteristics, spatial evolution paths and internal driving mechanisms of the knowledge transfer (KT) network in China’s patent-intensive industries (PIIs). The authors' goal is to provide valuable insights to inform policy-making that fosters the development of relevant industries. The authors also aim to offer a fresh perspective for future spatiotemporal studies on industrial KT and innovation networks.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, the authors analyze the patent transfer (PT) data of listed companies in China’s information and communication technology (ICT) industry, spanning from 2010 to 2021. The authors use social network analysis and the quadratic assignment procedure (QAP) method to explore the problem of China’s PIIs KT from the perspectives of technical characteristics evolution, network and spatial evolution and internal driving mechanisms.FindingsThe results indicate that the knowledge fields involved in the PT of China’s ICT industry primarily focus on digital information transmission technology. From 2010 to 2021, the scale of the ICT industry’s KT network expanded rapidly. However, the polarization of industrial knowledge distribution is becoming more serious. QAP regression analysis shows that economic proximity and geographical proximity do not affect KT activities. The similarity of knowledge application capacity, innovation capacity and technology demand categories in various regions has a certain degree of impact on KT in the ICT industry.Originality/valueThe current research on PIIs mainly focuses on measuring economic contributions and innovation efficiency, but less on KT in PIIs. This study explores KT in PIIs from the perspectives of technological characteristics, network and spatial evolution. The authors propose a theoretical framework to understand the internal driving mechanisms of industrial KT networks.

It has been essential to take the time to consider the various ethical and practical concerns that arise in the field of human resource management (HRM), as well as the elements that contribute to the effective integration of technology into HRM operations. The rapid improvements in technology, such as robotic services and artificial intelligence (AI), have presented human resource practitioners with new and critical difficulties. We conducted a survey with 216 members of the HRM department to find out more about the different aspects that affect the success of strategic human resource management (SHRM). The elements that define the successful integration of technology in efficient strategic human resource management (SHRM) include hiring and selection, onboarding of new hires, performance management, data analytics, and HR metrics. The study's findings suggest that how technological solutions are implemented in SHRM has a significant impact on their efficacy. Businesses must always invest in technology and adjust to changes in the SHRM industry.

Alumina‐Epoxy‐Pore Composites Fabricated by Inkjet Printing for Wireless Communication Technology

AbstractReducing transmission loss via composites with pores has emerged as a breakthrough method for information and communications technology applications. The super/extremely high‐frequency signals used in the technologies result in significant transmission loss. Demand for low‐loss materials with low dielectric constant (Dk) and low dissipation factor (Df) has increased in recent years. Here, it is demonstrated that the pore in composites can be reduced Dk and Df of composites with pores (air). In fabrication of composites, a drop‐on‐demand (DOD) inkjet printing method to fabricate composites with pores (air) for use in wireless communications technologies. The DOD method is a simple but versatile manufacturing process at low cost. Its versatile process makes it possible to control the amount of resin and pore in fabrication of the composites and moreover to distribute all their components isotopically and homogeneously. It is possible to fabricate the composites with a lower Dk and Df value by increasing pore amount in the composites. This strategy enabled us to inexpensively manufacture dielectric substrates with low Dk and Df values, greatly contributing to the communications technology industry.

Applying sustainable development goals in financial forecasting using machine learning techniques

AbstractThis study seeks to identify the impact of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in predicting corporate financial performance (CFP) in the information communications technology (ICT) industry. Data over the period of 2016–2020 that are relevant to financial reporting and corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting have been extracted for 208 firms in the ICT industry. Important variables have been identified to help predict the financial performance in the following years upon the publication of CSR reports. Drawing on resource‐based view and stakeholder theory, the purpose of this study is to find the quintessential variables that influence the prediction accuracy of financial performance. To better forecast earnings per share (EPS), machine learning feature selection methods have been implemented. The findings suggest that certain variables such as return on total assets, SDGs adoption and whether the firm has established KPI for SDGs achievements can help enhance EPS prediction. With the various predictive models, the artificial neural network model is the most effective in predicting CFPs. Most importantly, the adoption of SDGs can be utilized to sharpen the forecast on financial performance as it enables firms to bolster stakeholder engagement and evaluate environmental, social, and corporate governance efforts.

On the duality of partner type diversity on network stability: the mediating role of knowledge recombination in R&D network

PurposePrevious research has analyzed the consequence of network stability; however, little is known about how partner type diversity influence network stability in R&D network. Based on knowledge-based view and social network theory, the purpose of this paper is to unravel the internal mechanisms between partner type diversity and network stability through the mediating role of knowledge recombination in R&D network.Design/methodology/approachThe authors collected an unbalanced panel patent data set from information communication technology industry for the period 1994–2016. Then, the authors tested the different dimensions of partner type variety and its relevance in the R&D network and the mediating role of knowledge recombination through adopting the multiple linear regression.FindingsResults indicate an inverted U-shaped relationship between partner type diversity (variety and relevance) and network stability, whereas knowledge recombination partially mediate these relationships.Originality/valueFrom the perspective of R&D networks, this paper explores that there are the under-researched phenomena the antecedent of network stability through nodal attributes (i.e. partner type variety and partner type relevance). Moreover, this paper empirically examined the mediating role of knowledge recombination in the partner type diversity–network stability relationships. The novel perspective allows focal firm to recognize importance of nodal attributes, which are critical to fully excavate the potential capabilities of cooperating partners in R&D network.

Inter-industry and intra-industry switching as sources of productivity growth: structural change of Finland’s ICT industries

Structural change is an important driver of productivity growth at the aggregate level. While previous productivity decompositions account for the contributions of market entry and exit, they overlook continuing firms that switch from one industry to another. We develop an improved productivity decomposition that accounts for both intra-industry and inter-industry switching, is applicable to both static and inter-temporal settings, and ensures consistent aggregation of firm-level productivity to the industry level. The proposed decomposition is applied to Finland’s information and communication technology (ICT) industry in the first two decades of the 21st century. This industry experienced major structural changes due to the rapid downfall of Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer at the beginning of our study period. Our results reveal that the sharp decline of labor productivity was associated with structural changes, whereas the surviving firms that continued in the same industry managed to improve their productivity. Our results indicate that industry switching can dampen or enhance the productivity impacts of structural change, especially during times of crisis and recession.

How does Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry agglomeration affect carbon emission efficiency? Evidence from China.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry takes on critical significance in promoting economic development and reducing carbon emissions. From the agglomeration perspective, how the ICT industry agglomeration affects carbon emission efficiency (CEE) in 30 provinces in China from 2006 to 2020 is innovatively investigated. We measured CEE using a dynamic directional distance function-based DEA model. Then, based on the research hypotheses, the specific impact and transmission mechanism of ICT industrial agglomeration on CEE are revealed using a spatial Dubin model and a threshold panel model. The results show that: (1) the ICT industry agglomeration exerts a remarkable inverted "U-shaped" effect on CEE. This non-linear effect is significant in the eastern and central regions, but not in the western region. (2) ICT industry agglomeration can affect CEE in neighboring regions. The spatial spillover effect shows an inverted "U-shaped" in the central region, positive in the western region, and insignificant in the eastern region. (3) when green technology innovation exceeds the threshold value (4.948), ICT industry agglomeration positively affects CEE, and when energy structure exceeds the threshold value (0.389), their marginal effects are significantly negative. The threshold effect also shows regional heterogeneity. This research proposes policy recommendations focusing on accelerating the ICT industry transformation, leveraging the spillover and technological advantages of agglomeration, and enhancing regional cooperation.

Chatbots in the Workplace: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study of Workers on the Use of ChatGPT

The development of AI technology, such as advanced chatbots, provides many variations of assistance to humans. This research discusses the use of chatbots, particularly ChatGPT, in the workplace based on interviews with three informants. Using interpretive phenomenological methods, the study seeks to find out the experience of using ChatGPT to help complete work tasks. The researcher found that ChatGPT can personalize responses based on user prompts. The speed of providing feedback is the Media Richness Theory's dimension that dominates the results of this study. The superiority of ChatGPT is recognized in terms of its speed in providing feedback when quick resolution of work tasks is needed. However, the research also highlights the weakness of ChatGPT in terms of its limited knowledge storage. Further research is expected to explore experiences related to the use of Chatbot technology with other models to enhance understanding of communication technology industries based on AI.

At present, the wave of digital economy is sweeping the world. Countries all over the world are competing for the strategic commanding height in digital economy. In order to firmly seize this major historical opportunity and to transform and upgrade its economic structure faster, Russia keeps on strengthening the core capabilities of the digital economy such as information infrastructure, new generation information technology, ICT industry, human resources, information security, and digital environment supervision. Research purpose: a competitive analysis of the national strategic planning for the digital economies in China and Russia. Research objectives: 1) to provide definition for the digital economy; 2) to show the current improvement of the digital economy; 3) to study Russia’s digital economy; 4) to explore China’s digital economy. Research methodology: study of theoretical literature, data collection and analysis. Research results. “Strategy of the Information Society Development in the Russian Federation for 2017–2030” (2017) implies creating conditions for developing large companies in the information and communications technology industry in order to protect national interests in the digital economy. In 2021, Russia’s investment in the development of the digital economy reached the total of 4.094 trillion rubles. It represents an increase of 7.8 % compared to 2020 and amounts to 3.7 % of GDP. Over the past decade, China’s digital economy has made world-renowned development achievements. The overall scale has been the second best in the world for many years. The construction of information and communication networks is a global leader in terms of scope. The "Broadband China" strategy has been diligently implemented. The country has built the world’s largest fiber optic and mobile broadband network. The length of optical cable lines increased 2.7 times from 14.79 million km in 2012 to 54.81 million km in 2021. By June 2022, the total number of data center racks in China exceeded 5.9 million standard racks, and 153 national green data centers were built. Key core technologies have experienced breakthroughs. Investment in research and development of digital technologies is increasing every year. The level of digitalization in the service sector has increased significantly. The digital transformation of agriculture is making steady progress. In China, the deep implementation of the development strategy focused on innovation, promoting key technology research, accelerating the forging of long boards, making up for short boards, and building an independent and controlled industrial ecology.

Dynamic technological capabilities in leading European R&D firms: a panel data analysis with structural equations

ABSTRACT The deployment of R&D-driven dynamic technological capabilities (DTCs) is related to firm performance and represents a critical point in global socio-economic development. This is an interesting topic for EU economic, political and business actors confronted with increasingly changing environments. This study analyzed the influence of DTCs on firm performance using a longitudinal approach based on a structural equation modelling technique with a panel dataset with 268 observations from a sample of 67 leading European firms in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry. The results show that firm performance is positively influenced by the deployment of DTCs, and this effect is significant, at least in the subsequent year's performance. These results shed light on the latent learning effect in the development of R&D-driven DTCs in ICT firms.
