Study on the Overseas Reader Reviews of English Translation of Sanguo Yanyi

<p>Reader evaluation is a key step in measuring the effectiveness of literary translations. A thorough investigation of the reception of Chinese classical novels among overseas readers can help us understand Western readers’ acceptance, value judgments, and preferences regarding these works. This study aims to assess the translation quality and value of the English version of <em>Sanguo Yanyi</em> by Yu Sumei. By collecting reader reviews from platforms such as Amazon and Goodreads, we employ KHCoder text analysis software to generate visualizations that analyze reader feedback. The results indicate that several main factors influence reader evaluations of this translation, including translation quality, English language experience, narrative coherence, and overall reading experience. Therefore, Chinese translators should comprehensively consider the needs and reading habits of overseas readers when translating classical Chinese novels.</p>

Film and television adaptation of literature has become the mainstream of current film and television works, but literature and film and television, as two different art forms, the adaptation process is very complicated. This paper deeply discusses the various forms of adaptation of original works and the reasons behind them through case studies and qualitative analysis. At the same time, the article points out that there are significant differences between the original literature and the adaptation of film and television, and analyzes the reasons and techniques of adaptation. Meanwhile, taking the film and television adaptations of the Four Great Classical Novels and Sherlock as examples, it specifically analyzes the content and plot changes presented after the adaptation, and points out that the purpose of film and television adaptation is to improve the viewing quality and satisfy the needs of modern audiences.

This study proposes a way to add depth and interest in learning classical novels. It is an integrated class between subjects through combination with the contents of the 'ethics and thought' subject. In order to pursue an in-depth understanding of classical novels using the socio-cultural and ideological context of literary works, an integrated class of 'literature' and 'ethics and thought' subjects, which are optional courses for high school, was designed. To this end, the analysis, design, and development stages were discussed by referring to the ADDIE model widely used in teaching and learning design. In the analysis and design stage, the achievement criteria of the curriculum that can realize the goals of this study were selected, and the learning goals and learning contents were sequenced. In the development stage, based on the contents of the previous stage, a plan for producing teaching and learning materials that can be practically used and a course plan that will be the basis for class implementation was presented. In the future era, integration will be more important than the segmentation of knowledge. In order to improve learners' practical thinking skills, develop solutions to various complex problems in the real world, and promote critical creative thinking, integration between subjects should be discussed much more actively than now. The integrated class of the two subjects proposed in this study is expected to develop various core competencies and thinking skills of learners. The significance of this study is that it proposed specific implementation plans in high school education, where discussions on inter-subject integration are not active.

In the early 20th century, Kroean publishing houses that pioneered the distribution of newly edited Chinese classical novels actively utilized Chinese images to reflect readers’ tastes, even showcasing images that were neither popular nor taboo in the Joseon Dynasty. On the covers of Ttakji-bon novel, such as “Gwkbunyang Silqi(The Story of Gwakbunyang),” a Chinese novel, the Chinese-style iconography of a husband and wife sitting together enjoying a banquet was consistently featured from the first edition in 1913 until the 1950s. This imagery, which was not seen in the Confucian society of the Joseon Dynasty, highlights the public’s interest and changes regarding the new status of men and women within the East Asian family structure during the transition to a modern society. Moreover, the book-cover of “Gwakbunyang Silgi” illustrates the distribution of the Chinese iconography of the husband and wife sitting together, which was very popular in Qing Dynasty as a form of New Year’s Poster(Nianhua). This paper examines the visual representation and distribution of the classical story of Gwabunyang in the publishing culture of the early 20th century, focusing on the cover images of the Ttakji-bon, Gwakbunyang Silgi.

Paratexts in English Translations of Chinese Classical Novels in China Review

This paper takes the Chinese classical novels published in the English periodical China Review as the research object and examines the paratexts in the English translations, particularly paying attention to prefaces, annotations, and other peritexts, to explore the functions and roles of these paratexts in the translation process. By studying the paratexts of Chinese classical novels in China Review, we can understand the translation of Chinese classical novels in the 19th century and their dissemination in the Western world, providing references for the translation and dissemination of Chinese literature.

This study aimed to examine the relationship between classical novels and web novels in the context of the changing interest in and awareness of the latter. Due to the difficulties of directly comparing classical novels and web novels, we considered how classical novels could be utilized in web novels. This study sought to predict the methods by which classical novels survive in web novels and to discover unique and distinct aspects of their adaptation as web novels. The web novel selected for this study is “Tiger Eosa Shakes Joseon.” Serialized from February 10, 2021, to February 8, 2022, on Naver and Kakao Page, this work achieved success as a web novel through storytelling that relied on classical novel techniques, indicating a positive outlook for web novel creation utilizing classical novels. First, classical novels are utilized in web novels regarding the origin and formation of the work. Additionally, elements such as the author and readership of classical novels and their consumption methods are observed in web novels. Lending libraries, novelists, critics, and other aspects of novel culture offer possibilities for this type of adaptation. Next, depending on the genre of web novels, classical novels are regarded from the perspective of historical facts or tales, with attention to the historical events reflected in classical novels. As classical novels are communicated in the realm of “old stories” such as fables or fairy tales, characters from classical novels form relationships with characters from web novels, leading to a narrative progression different from that of classical novels, with changes in the appearance, role, and function. Moreover, classical novels are newly created within web novels through the reiteration of familiar characteristics, such as structure, motifs, and themes. This is due to the multimodality pursued by web novels, in which the genre of classical novels is continuously reproduced with slight differences. Finally, the diverse utilization of classical novels in the web novel “Tiger Eosa Shakes Joseon” fundamentally stems from the capabilities of the author.

A Study of the Effects of Narrow Reading on Incidental English Vocabulary Acquisition

The study investigates incidental vocabulary acquisition during English natural reading through empirical research. First-year English major students from a university were selected as participants. They were tasked with reading simplified adaptations of Jane Austen's classic novels after class, divided into Groups A and B (Group A engaged in narrow reading, while Group B engaged in extensive reading). Both groups underwent vocabulary tests before and after the experiment. Through data analysis, this study reveals the impact of narrow reading and extensive reading on vocabulary acquisition when reading English simplified novels, as well as whether there are differences between extensive reading and narrow reading during the reading process. The conclusions of this research have implications for developing effective strategies for extracurricular English reading and fostering complete vocabulary acquisition among students.

This study explores the theme of marriage and social expectations in two beloved novels: In case of two British novelists Jane Austen's Emma and Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D’Urbervilles. The paper is focused on revealing a multi-faceted character of the figure of gender roles, social values and traditions linking the lives of Emma Woodhouse and Tess Durbeyfield by means of a comparative analysis. These tensions between female characters' individual goals and social constraints are exposed by the study and the opinions of Elizabeth V. Spelman, Ann Bo-Hubert, Hazel Carby, Elaine Showalter, Susan Gubar and Sandra M. Gilbert are referred to. Austen dismantled the precedent social norms of the Regency period through the vital tool of satire and wit after this novel is through and through analysed out. The study shows that these classic novels have been excellent guides and examples that have helped readers figure out what they would like to do with their lives. Moreover, the readers have been able to see people confront the challenges they encounter from institutions or interpersonal dynamics as well as expectations to balance their culture and social obligations.

From early literary works to contemporary literature, patriarchal dominance remains a complex and enduring subject of exploration.

Big Novels for Little Folks: Dickens Adapted, Abridged, and Excerpted for Young Readers

Abstract: Classic novels retold for children have received limited scholarly attention. Often cheaply printed, the interest they arouse is also transient: child readers become adults and either lose interest or move on to the unabridged text. Despite their transience and ephemerality, “classic” novels rewritten for children, especially retellings of Dickens, merit scholarly examination. These retellings appeal to child readers by centring the plots that revolve around child characters, shaping the popular imagination and reception history of these works. Since their initial publication, Dickens’s novels have been adapted, abridged, and anthologized for young readers by editors and publishers with various motives: to profit off Dickens’s fame, to promote literacy, and to support social change. Texts that rewrite “classic” authors like Dickens for young audiences reveal our cultural assumptions and anxieties about literacy.

The articles in this edition of European Comic Art cover a range of themes, including adaptation, whether from an Ibsen play or a range of classic novels, and a corresponding scrutiny of the affordances of the comics medium, along with a reflection on the differential apportioning of artistic prestige from the eighteenth century through to the twenty-first. An in-depth interview with an award-winning translator brings in further angles on comics as a transnational medium, and an essay by an eminent semiologist revisits the linear/tabular distinction that has been the basis of much formal analysis of comics. The issue of pedagogy recurs both as subject matter of primary texts and in the form of a constructive proposal for enlightened curriculum development. Politics pervades all the articles: the environmental crisis and media collusion in obfuscation, the process of achieving change in education, the responsibility of a satirist to adhere or refuse adherence to one camp or another, the negotiations and frictions that arise out of relocation into new contexts of reception, and an exploration of the borderline regions of the social unconscious.

This research aims to identify certain similarities in the narrative structure between Korean Full-length novels and romance web novels, with the purpose of proposing a methodology for the modern utilization and popularization of Korean full-length novels. To achieve this, the narrative elements of Korean Full-length novels and romance web novels were divided into internal and external aspects for examination of their similarities.
 Firstly, it was highlighted that both genres share a similarity in focusing on the theme of ‘marriage’ in the progression of events. While a significant portion of classical novels deals with ‘marriage,’ it is challenging to find cases in Korean short novels where ‘marriage’ is placed at the center, driving diverse and complex narratives. Therefore, the similarity in narrative development centered around ‘marriage’ is considered a crucial measure.
 Additionally, setting up an idealized character with perfection in both internal and external aspects is a commonality between the two genres. Particularly, the detailed portrayal of the character’s internal and external facets shows a high degree of similarity between the two types. The use of Jaebeol or wealthy families as a major background is another shared aspect. Although the utilization of chaebol in Korean short novels may differ from setting wealthy families in romance web novels, the commonality lies in the foregrounding of these backgrounds.
 Externally, the research found similarity in the use of a serialized creative approach and the appeal to a female audience as a niche consumer group. Korean short novels are characterized by their serialized nature, while romance web novels also feature ‘series’ In conclusion, Korean short novels exhibit a high degree of similarity in narrative structure, both internally and externally, with romance web novels. Consequently, it is confirmed that the narrative grammar of romance web novels can be utilized as a strategy for the modern utilization and popularization of Korean full-lngth novels.

A study on the translation strategies of ancient Chinese cultural classics from the perspective of hypotaxis and parataxis--taking the A Dream of Red Mansions as an example

Translation serves as a bridge for telling Chinese stories and promotes the exchange of Chinese and foreign civilizations. By translating Chinese classics into foreign languages, it facilitates the international dissemination of Chinese culture and deepens the exchange and mutual learning of civilizations. As the first of China's four great classical novels, A Dream of Red Mansions is widely recognized for its literary value and achievements by scholars worldwide. From the early 19th century to the present, there have been over 100 translations into more than 30 languages. A Dream of Red Mansions represents the pinnacle of classical Chinese literature, involving complex terminology from various fields. In addition to translating ancient titles and food in the text, there are also extensive translations of ancient poems, all of which pose focal points and challenges in translation. By comparing various translations, this paper takes Hawkes' translation as an example to analyze the differences between English and Chinese in the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions from the perspectives of hypotaxis and parataxis, and expound the translation strategies in this type of translation.

The Dilemma and Choices of Indirect Translation: The Transformation of Chinese Classical Novels in Europe from the Early Translations of Yu Jiaoli

ABSTRACT Previous studies on the Yu jiaoli 玉嬌梨 (The Two Fair Cousins) often directly compared the English indirect translation with the Chinese original by neglecting the French translation as the intermedia, treating the two translators as one person and collectively referring to them as the “Westerners.” This article reexamines French translation and English indirect translation in the Anglo-French competition in the early 19th century. Influenced by the trend of Academic Sinology established in France and the dominating French way of intellectual trade between China and Europe, the French translation showed more faithfulness than literariness. However, the English translator was faced with the dilemma and choices of translation – relying on Abel-Rémusat’s good reputation and being more faithful to his translation or being deviated from the French translation by intentional mistranslations, abridgment, and deletions of the main text and the paratext under the multiple purposes of economy, politics, business, and culture. The English translator’s unfamiliarity with the Chinese language has inadvertently produced more mistranslations, further increasing the distance from the French translation.

明末辽东战事题材时事小说中的朝鲜叙写: 以《辽海丹忠录》《镇海春秋》为中心

The current affairs novels of the late Ming Dynasty 〈Liao Hai Dan Zhong Lu〉 and 〈Zhen Hai Chun Qiu〉 describe the competition between the Ming and Jin forces in the Liaodong region at the end of the Ming Dynasty. They largely involve Joseon's diplomatic stance, internal affairs and military affairs. This phenomenon of other countries appearing in Chinese classical novels is novel. On the surface, the plots of the two novels are very similar, but after careful analysis, it can be found that the two works contain different emotional colors. First of all, in terms of Joseon's stance, 〈Liao Hai Dan Zhong Lu〉 emphasizes more the difficulties and helplessness of Joseon sandwiched between the Ming and Jin sides, while 〈Zhen Hai Chun Qiu〉 reveals a side that is too rich in the author's personal subjective emotions. Then in terms of Joseon's internal affairs, 〈Liao Hai Dan Zhong Lu〉 and 〈Zhen Hai Chun Qiu〉 agree on the nature of this political change and the Ming court's handling strategy. Finally, there is the military aspect of Joseon. In the text, the novelist devises a plot that leads to war due to the mistakes of Joseon officials. The novelist also uses literary works to express the Ming Dynasty's concerns about the situation and its continued hope for an alliance with Joseon. Therefore, this article takes these two novels as the research object, trying to explore the literary understanding of “Joseon” in the current affairs novels of the late Ming Dynasty, and explore the underlying motivations of the novelists' creations and the inspiration for us today.

THE THEME OF TOTAL SURVEILLANCE IN THE FIELD OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES IN THE NOVEL “THE CIRCLE” BY DAVE EGGERS

C Currently, the genre of the dystopian novel is one of the most popular and has been changing significantly. The article studies the trends in the transformation of the surveillance theme in the dystopian discourse of the 21st century based on the novel “The Circleˮ (2013) by Dave Eggers, and compares the representation of this theme with classical novels (“1984ˮ by George Orwell, “Weˮ by Yevgeny Zamyatin). The image of totalitarian power, which is an indispensable component of a dystopian novel, has been modified recently – political terror is replaced by digital terror, where transparency of information, considered to be good, turns into evil and a means of manipulation. The metaphor of transparency is crucial in the novel, it symbolises the desire to create a constrained society, where control is the only constant. The article offers an analysis of the genre. Special attention is paid to the system of characters, which, despite the continuation of the tradition of the classical text, is significantly transformed. In addition, the article deals with the symbolism of the novel, as well as the problem of inaccurate translation of the title of the work, which leads to the loss of individual components of meaning. A detailed examination of the “The Circleˮ by Dave Eggers shows that surveillance affects people’s behaviour, controlling the desires and subordinating the will. The aspiration for absolute transparency of personal life and the monopoly on information create painful moods in a society that, despite security, feels vulnerable.

현대역 된 고소설 출판물과 출판 유통 및 독서 환경의 변화

This paper is to examine empirically the pattern and distribution status of modern translations of classic novels in book subscription platforms, and to explore the revitalization plans of modern translation and distribution of modern translations of classical novels in the future book subscription platforms. This is considered one of the significant ways to increase even slightly the frequency of encounters between modern readers and classical novels now and in the future in a reality where the number of modern readers enjoying books through e-books is increasing among the gradual decline in overall reading rates. In addition, as a characteristic of book subscription platform, in the fact that the readers can use the books provided on the platform unlimitedly through the application by the payment of a certain fee, I think it could make the readers feel more at ease in terms of economics or convenience for their accessibility to the modern translations of classical novels.
 For this, the ‘Millie’s Library’, which begun to provide a monthly subscription service for the first time in Korea and provides a wealth of general books including novels, was first chosen as the main object of analysis. Prior to explore the future directions, I looked into the current state of modern translations of classical novels, which are currently distributed through ‘Millie’s Library’, a book subscription platform. As of August 2023, there were 329 modern translations of classical novels of 81 works which are distributed in ‘Millie’s Library’. It has been confirmed that various types of subtypes of classical novels are being translated into modern times, and a significant number of e-books published after 2020 are being distributed. Meanwhile, it was found that classical novel e-books with an e-book viewer function are being distributed compared to those without that, and there are many cases in which information about the translator is not recorded.
 Based on this, I considered about ways to revitalize modern translation and distribution of modern e-books of classical novels in conjunction with a book subscription platform. The plan for publication of the modern version is as follows: First, it is necessary to provide information on the translator, authorized translator, catalogue raisonne, and original script in the fact there is a need to expand the distribution of qualified modern e-books. Second, it is necessary to consider the form and function of being distributed e-books in terms of readability within the subscription service. Third, it is necessary to expand the categories and publishing media of modern translation publications like short contents such as Chatbook or Docent book. Next, the activation plan for distribution is as follows: First, it is necessary to verify the content quality and to expand the sharing through continuously securing qualified contents and consumers within the platform. Second, it is more actively necessary about curation methods like a curation of web novels or own humanities books within the platform.

 Through this, it was confirmed that the value of classics is the nature of literature itself. So, we should be able to write an classic novel itself. Nevertheless publication has its own commercial viability.
 Therefore, it was clarified that the inheritance of classics should aim for inclusive extension by embracing ourselves and everything around that classics had. We must be focused that classic’s totality more than unessential things such as what is real, what is more valuable and what should we do, or what we would do. Naturally what is important that explanation of classic is needed, learn a lesson through the text are good, intellectual play is inevitable inevitable and so on. But how and what classic novels had been is more important than.
 Thus, the inheritance of classics should be accomplished with the effort to find genuineness of ourselves and the true value of classics in addition to the studies of our classics’ authenticity and endeavor to inherit them.
 Finally we should listen to what classics said. Since this is the proper function of literature and the meaning of its existence.
