China: A candidate for winner in the international game of higher education?

AbstractThe hegemony of the Western higher education institutions in the global university market is being challenged by China. The top Chinese universities have significantly improved their international ranking positions. When it comes, however, to the ability of universities to attract foreign students and faculty, the Chinese higher education institutions' performance raises questions. The International Outlook scores of these universities, although showing an increasing trend, are still lacking behind the U.S. or Western European top universities. China is primarily a student ‘exporter.’ It also became a leading destination country for students from Asia or Africa, but it is still far from reaching the ‘international openness’ level of the U.S. or the UK universities. The publication networks of the top Chinese higher education institutions indicate that these universities prefer to publish with other Chinese institutions or the U.S. universities.

Trends in the use of it in human resource management on the example of chinese higher education institutions

The Human resources Management System (HRMS) is sofware for working with databases and applicatons to carry out personnel operatons on the Internet. The HRMS sofware automatcally prepares all bills and employee registries, such as a service book, a vacaton account, a credit score, a payroll account, a chart of ofcials, etc., getng relevant data from transactons. Chinese higher educaton insttutons use a number of modern sofware to implement educatonal services at a higher internatonal level. In partcular, it uses applicaton sofware to atract students for training - China Internatonal Student service System.

Student Engagement for Sustainability of Chinese International Education: The Case of International Undergraduate Students in China

Student engagement has been attracting attention in the discussion of higher education (HE) quality. Despite the rapid increase of international students in China, little understanding has been gained for quality management on these students’ engagement in learning. This paper focuses on international undergraduate students in Chinese higher education institutions, exploring the nature and characteristics of their academic engagement and the environmental factors influencing the engagement. The discussion was based on a synthesis of the findings of two studies, i.e., an exploratory qualitative study following a small group of international students at a research university and a large-scale survey involving 1428 international students at 34 Chinese universities. The analyses revealed less than satisfactory levels of international students’ engagement, with a high proportion of the participants being passively or ineffectively involved in learning. The qualitative findings highlighted pedagogical and attitudinal factors that affected international students’ engagement. The survey results indicated six environmental factors, categorized into three groups, having significant effects on the respondents’ engagement. Although located in China, the analyses bear implications for practitioners striving for the sustainable development of international education in a broader range of contexts.

African international students’ career and job satisfaction: The case of China

We aimed to examine the influence of international education career preparation on job acquisition (JA), skilled labour (SL), and job satisfaction (JS) among African student graduates of Chinese universities. Participants were 708 graduates from Ghana who attended Chinese higher education institutions (female = 37.6%; age range = 16 – above 41). The graduates completed the measures of educational training (ET), cultural translation impact (CTI), technology, SL, JA, and JS. A structural equation model analysis shows that career preparation with technology and ET related positively with JA and SL. However, graduates with lower CTI were less successful with their JA and SL in their home country. Additionally, while graduates with SL status had higher JS, JA tended to be associated with lower JS. Based on these findings, we propose that career preparation programs for international students should address both the hard-technical skills of technology education and the soft technical skills of job brokering of the country of origin taking into account the cultural translation.

Investigating the antecedents of university students’ perceived ease of using the Internet for learning

ABSTRACT As a key variable determining technology acceptance and adoption, the perceived ease of technology use (PEU) has been in the focus of a considerable body of research. This research examined the external factors that influence perceived ease of use, such as computer self-efficacy and perceived enjoyment, but yielded inconsistent findings and under-emphasized important predictors in the educational context. This study examined the relations between potential antecedents and perceived ease of Internet use for learning of a higher-education student in China. Computer self-efficacy, perceived enjoyment, and students’ perception of external control significantly influenced PEU, while facilitating conditions and technological complexity did not. The total variance of PEU explained by the five antecedents was 98%. This study contributes to the theoretical understanding of perceived ease of use by specifying its antecedents; in the context of Chinese institutions of higher education. It also contributes to practice by identifying the measures required to improve students’ perceived ease of use to facilitate their use of the Internet for learning.

The role of Web of Science publications in China’s tenure system

Tenure provides a permanent position to faculty in higher education institutions. In North America, it is granted to those who have established a record of excellence in research, teaching and services in a limited period. However, in China, research excellence (represented by the number of Web of Science publications) is highly weighted in the tenure assessment compared to excellence in teaching and services, but this has never been systematically investigated. By analyzing the tenure assessment documents from Chinese Universities, this study reveals the role of Web of Science publications in China’s tenure system and presents the landscape of the tenure assessment process in Chinese higher education institutions.

POLITICAL COMMUNICATION STUDIES IN CHINA

Political linguistics is a branch of linguistics on the borderline between linguistics and politology, actively developed in China today. It studies the regularities and strategies of the use of language in the process of political communication. Political communication presupposes a process of communication between the participants of political activity. Investigation of the theory and practice of political communication is important for graduate and post - graduate students, because it can facilitate better understanding, analysis and production (specifically in the process of translation into other languages) of the corresponding texts. The article dwells on the definition of political communication and its typical features (ritual and informative character; institutionalism and special personal characteristics; correlation of esotericism and free access, reductionism and holisticity of information, neutrality and expressivity, dialogue and monologue, aggression and tolerance; peculiarities of evaluation expression), as well as on the current state of political communication research development in China. In the light of theoretical aspects of consideration of language and linguocultural peculiarities, the article discusses the approaches to teaching political communication in Chinese higher education institutions. The main methods within the methodology are: cognitive (focusing on the process of presentation, storage, processing, interpretation and production of knowledge; the most popular area - analysis of political metaphor); discursive (political text is analyzed in the context of the political situation in interconnection with other texts, taking into account the author’s purposes, political views and personality traits); linguoculturological (dealing with the national - cultural peculiarities of texts); rhetorical (with emphasis on the communication efficiency and the means of convincing and manipulation; the most popular area - creation of rhetorical portraits of politicians); semiotic (concentrates on the study of semiotically complicated texts and texts combining various semiotic codes).

Measurement and Analysis of learning Engagement of South-Asian Students in Chinese Universities 南亚国家来华留学生个体学习性投入的测量与分析

International students’ learning experiences and learning outcomes in intercultural contexts are important topics in higher education internationalization. This study focused on South-Asian students studying at Chinese universities. To assess the participants’ academic engagement during their study at Chinese universities, the Individual South-Asian Student Engagement Questionnaire was developed. Through the use of exploratory factor analysis and correlation analysis on a sample of 193 South-Asian students in China, the research confirmed the reliability and validity of the instrument. Four dimensions, i.e. learning motivation, learning behaviors, learning strategies and learning outcomes, as well as the interactions between the four dimensions, were suggested to understand the features of South-Asian students’ learning engagement during their studies in Chinese higher education institutions. 国际学生在跨文化情境下的学习体验与收获是高等教育国际化研究领域的重要议题。本研究选取具有区域性、国别化特征的南亚国家来华留学生为研究对象，通过实施来华留学生个体学习性投入调查收集数据，采用统计学分析检验该测量工具的信效度，同时呈现南亚留学生在学习动机、学习行为、学习策略和学业成就四个维度的关键性表征及其互动关系。

International student mobility has been becoming varied and complex. Chinese higher education institutions (HEIs) host about 492,185 international students in 2018, sharing 10 percent of globally mobile students. The purpose of the study was to promote understanding of factors that influence international students choose to earn academic degree in Chinese HEIs. The econometric approach was applied to identify factors that influence international student mobility in China. The total inflow of international students, the inflow of students from both developing and developed countries, and international students with undergraduate, master’s and doctoral academic programs are taken as predicted variables. The political, economic, academic, socio-cultural factors were chosen as explanatory variables. From the sample data of 60 countries of origin, our data covers more than 89% of total international students earn academic degrees in Chinese HEIs during the period 2007 to 2016. The results indicated some differences in determinants of undergraduate students, master’s students and doctoral students from developing and developed countries choose to study in China. The economic development level between China and the countries of origin and their bilateral trade relations are important economic factors that affect international students, and the impact on undergraduate students is more significant. The Chinese government scholarship policies and mutual recognition of academic degrees have been effectively promoted inward international students. Compared with undergraduate students, the academic ranking of Chinese universities has more significant influences on master’s students and doctoral students. The geographical distance and cultural distance between China and the countries of origin are important social and cultural factors. International students from developed countries are more influenced by cultural distance factor.

Full-English Teaching Study of Audit and Assurance Service

With the continuous enhancement of economic globalization and world economic integration as well as the further opening of the entire society, the demand for financial and economic professionals with an international perspective is on the rise. Therefore, various forms of full-English teaching have been tried in many higher education institutions. However, at present, the full-English teaching of professional courses in Chinese higher education institutions is still in the preliminary exploration stage. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of the full- English course, Audit and Assurance Service, of Nanjing Audit University, this paper summarizes the teaching practice of the full-English course of auditing from the construction of teaching team, the design of teaching contents and the evaluation methods, and so on. It hopes to provide reference for the development of full-English teaching of professional course in Chinese higher education institutions.

Prospect and Limits of China-EU Relations in Higher Education: A Danish Case Study

Along with China’s economic growth, the notable rise of its universities and innovation system has inspired growing interest in how the higher education institutions (HEIs) of the European Union (EU) cooperate with Chinese HEIs. Beginning with a review of China-EU higher education relations, this paper presents a case study of a Sino-Danish collaborative programme in which cooperation and programme quality were limited by both partners’ different aims over time, and their alternate quality assurance systems. We suggest a proper collaborative level and discipline should be developed before the establishment of cooperation by taking relevant policies, merits and disadvantages of both partners, into consideration. This paper also points out that limits in collaboration can be alleviated, if a number of elements can be used effectively, such as China’s significant EU knowledge diaspora. Given this and other listed factors, including favorable policies introduced by the Chinese government, there are substantial prospects for extending China-EU collaborative relations and exchanges.

Benefits and Problems: Centralized Administration on College English Course in Chinese Higher Education Institutions

It’s arguable that more involvement of government with centralized policies causes less efficiency on education progresses. The article reviewed documents dedicated to or related to College English (CE), which have been released by Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China (MOE)and other institutions / organizations after 1949. Exploring CE’s goal, assessment and national impacts, it's substantially analyzed the benefits and disadvantages of centralized governance conducted on CE, and proposed an integral strategy potentially developed: conducting centralized administration while highlighting and enhancing diversity and individuality on CE for reaching the goal of CE in China higher education.

Research on Voluntary Disclosure of Higher Education Institutions

In recent decades, the development of higher education marketization in western developed countries is relatively mature. Therefore, the voluntary disclosure system for higher education institutions is relatively perfect. However, China's higher education has just begun to be marketized, and the relevant systems are still not perfect. There are still many problems. This paper takes the social responsibility report issued by Shanghai universities in 2014 and 2015 as the research object. According to the two classifications of 985 and non-985 colleges, six universities in Shanghai are selected as research objects to study the problems of voluntary information disclosure in Chinese higher education institutions. At the same time, relevant solutions are proposed.

Features of educational migration from Kazakhstan to China

Opening speech about a research subject. Article is devoted to the analysis of the educational migrationdirected from Kazakhstan to China. According to the author, educational immigration has both positive,and negative aspects. This process has several key effects for many countries and for developmentof Kazakhstan: political, economic, social and demographic.The purpose, the main directions and the ideas of scientific research – to study features of the internationaleducational migration on the example of a student’s stream from Kazakhstan to China. Maindirections of a research: to study historical, social and economic, cultural and psychological and otherprerequisites of emergence of a student’s stream in the People’s Republic of China, to reveal features offunctioning of a system of the international student’s mobility and to define the place of a stream fromKazakhstan to China in this system; to study existing in Kazakhstan intermediary the organizations, supportingreceipt in the Chinese higher education institutions; to study the institutes promoting maintenanceof a student’s stream and RK in the accepting cities of the People’s Republic of China, to describeprocess of formation of social networks of the Kazakhstan students in China.Short description of the scientific and practical importance of work. Educational migration is one ofthe most acute and problematic issues in modern society. Educational migration from RK in the People’sRepublic of China in this case – not an exception. Therefore the author made an attempt to clear somemain lines of this process. The scientific and practical value of this research does not raise doubts.The methodology of a research is based on system, comparative, content – and an event analysis.Educational migrations are a multidimensional phenomenon therefore also approaches to studying ofmigration of this type are many-sided.Main results and analysis, research conclusions: Educational migrations on number concede only tothe labor and forced migrations and are considered as some of the most large-scale in the world. Theyoccur both on international, and on interstate levels. Thus, obvious economic, social, political advantagesof educational migration have to become the basis to make development of educational migrationby an important part of migration policy of Kazakhstan.The value of the conducted research (the made contribution of this work to the corresponding fieldof knowledge) makes a contribution to development of a research of migration processes. Especiallythe research of obrazovtayelny migration and its features in terms of political science is of a particularresearch interest.The practical value of results of work allows to find the answer to a research question of the determinantssetting the direction of educational migration and the international student’s mobility.Key words: the international educational migration, the higher education, academic mobility, theKazakhstan-Chinese relations.

International Student Mobility: Policy and Implications in Chinese Higher Education

China is emerging as a new destination for higher education sector over the past 10 years, as a result of its growing economy great research facilities and a warm welcoming culture. The influx of international students into the Chinese institutions of higher education has exponentially increased over the past years. To understand the short-term movement and contentment of the international students undertaking various courses in Chinese universities, a research was conducted to identify the source of contentment. It was a quantity-based research which entailed the use of questionnaires to collect data from a sample of 772 students distributed in 26 major universities in China. First, we used an exploratory factor analysis to identify the important factors from a range of variables. Thereof a logistic regression was used to identify the factors that determine the overall international student's satisfaction. As a result, a number of themes came up such as financial aid, living conditions, and service facilities. This research reveals how the determination to foster international student satisfaction and their increasing numbers as well as retention through improvement of these factors.

Does Bilingual Instruction Impact Students’ Academic Performance in Content-Based Learning? Evidence from Business School Students Attending Bilingual and L1 Courses

Despite the rapid adoption of bilingual programs (English–Chinese) in Chinese higher education institutions (HEIs), concerns have been raised about perceived language hindrance to students’ academic comprehension and performance. In response to these concerns, we investigated the effects of bilingual instruction on content-based learning, and provide empirical evidence after testing influential factors in bilingual environments. Analyzing a sample of 498 undergraduate students enrolled in a fundamental business course at a sample university in China, we found insignificant statistical differences in the students’ academic performance between bilingual and L1 (Chinese) classes. We attribute this to the English language support provided by the university, and show that learning competence can help students minimize language barriers and solve common learning problems facing both bilingual and L1 students. Overall, our paper aimed to identify key determinants of students’ academic performance during bilingual instruction, and provide policy implications for developing desirable bilingual programs in HEIs.

English language ideologies and students’ perception of international English-Medium-Instruction (EMI) Master's programmes: A Chinese case study

To be engaged in the economic, political and technological processes of globalization, higher education institutions around the world have included internationalization as part of their long-term mission, and China is no exception. The number of international students on campus is a well-recognized index of the universities’ internationalized status. According to the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China, in 2016 there were 442,773 international students studying in China, 209,966 of whom were enrolled in degree programmes in Chinese higher education institutions, and 63,867 (47.42%) studied as postgraduate students (MOE, 2017).

An Exploration of Innovative and Enterprise Education Of Chinese Undergraduate in a Global Perspective

with the development and demand of the society, as well as the increasingly severe form of Undergraduate Students’ employment, the general institutions of higher education in China, it’s better to carry out the reform of the system from the elite to the mass education. By analyzing the present situation of Undergraduate’s independent entrepreneurship education in the Chinese institutions of higher education and comparing the innovative and entrepreneurial education in the developed countries in the world。This paper puts forward a strategy to adapt to the innovation and entrepreneurship education of the Chinese institutions, and makes a theoretical guidance for the feasibility of independent entrepreneurship for the undergraduate students, it’s to make more students trying to be independent. Entrepreneurship, that will expand the new situation for the employment of university graduates.

Socio-cultural Adjustment Experiences of International Students in Chinese Higher Education Institutions

Using qualitative research methods, this study explores international students’ socio-cultural adjustment experiences in Chinese Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The study indicates that many international students in China are facing linguistic and cultural challenges. They have limited interaction with Chinese students and the local people, which results in shallow socio-cultural understanding of China and its people. Although they are inadequate, Chinese HEIs are tackling these challenges by providing various supporting mechanisms such as offering introductory Chinese language course/s, organizing orientation programmes and partnering international and Chinese students. The study helps (Chinese) HEIs to enhance their services to international students and boost students’ experiences.
