Because traditional voluntary treatment approaches have proved ineffectual with narcotics addicts, new modalities need to be explored. The author describes his experience with three modalities he believes can provide a framework for making generic casework services maximally effective: the use of (1) rational authority, (2) cyclazocine, a narcotics antagonist, and (3) methadone-maintenance.

■ The concept of social role has been used in all fields of social work practice. Of particular concern in this paper is its application in casework treatment. The caseworker first identifies the client's wishes, defenses, pressures, and so on and then elects a role that will enable the client to use the caseworker in aiding the former's socialization process. ■ Psychological depression is described as a consistently manipulative interpersonal process through which the client seeks to offset partially the effects of disturbed inner communication and a sense of powerlessness. The Drop-Outs.

This book describes a "treatment study of intellectually capable students who drop out of high school." The authors are working at the Scholarship and Guidance Association, a counseling agency specializing in the treatment of the emotional and educational problems of adolescents. The authors impress upon the reader the acuteness of the problem that is facing the educator in this country: 40% of all students throughout the United States do not complete high school. The authors designed this study in order to test the validity of the following hypotheses: "(1) School problems generally, and early school-leaving specifically, are often aspects of emotional and personality disturbance in the student. (2) Casework treatment can improve school performance by effecting a better emotional and social adjustment. (3) Casework treatment can prevent premature school-leaving, and (4) School itself has a psychodynamic meaning of a conflictual nature that is contributory

Casework with parents of mentally retarded children.

A case history is used to demonstrate casework treatment with families of mentally retarded children. The purpose is to present in some detail casework process, techniques, areas of intervention, and goals. Goals discussed are: (1) alleviation of emotional problems to aid in better emotional and social adjustment of the whole family and to improve the child's access to his own potential; (2) improvement in child management; and (3) improvement in over-all family function. The case material illustrates the treatment process and the goals reached.

A therapeutic approach to reactive ego disturbances in children in placement.

This paper describes a therapeutic approach to the problem of the child who has lost the capacity for object relations following separation from his parents and placement. A specialized adaptation of an analytic technique is employed in the casework treatment. It consisted mainly of working through the defenses against affects and reviving the affects around the initial trauma of placement. Concurrent group treatment was employed for continuing diagnosis, to test the movement in object relationships and to provide a milieu in which readiness for new ties might be gratified. Prophylactic considerations are taken up in a final section.
