Learners’ Conduct and Educational Achievement

Learners’ conduct may be taken from several factors which may be the cause for their educational achievement. This study aimed to determine the level of learners’ conduct and educational achievement. This also determined the relationship between the learners’ conduct and educational achievement. The respondents of this study were the teachers (n=105) from the selected schools in the Division of Cagayan de Oro City. This study used descriptive correlational research design with documentary analysis and utilized an adapted and modified survey questionnaire as its instrument to gather the data from respondents. Statistical tools like frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient were used to find out the relationships between the variables. Results showed that the learners’ conduct was at moderate level on which family has the highest mean score while teacher has the lowest mean score. Learners’ educational achievement was at a satisfactory level. Learners’ conduct was negatively correlated with educational achievement. Though negatively correlated but it can be concluded that family plays an important role in molding learners’ conduct. Thus, the school may hold parenting seminars to remind parents of the importance of family in developing the learners’ conduct. If learners have desirable conduct, they would have good study habits that would improve their educational achievement.

Evaluating the Impact of AICS on Chronic Illness Management: A Case Study of Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) Service in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines

As the leader in social protection, the Medical Aid for Patients program, a type of assistance under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS), consistently implements AICS services to support government efforts in providing aid to individuals and families in need. This is a stop-gap measure to support the recovery of individuals and families suffering from unexpected life events adversities or crises. This study explores the efficiency of medical assistance received by clients with chronic illness in Cagayan de Oro City using a qualitative case study design. A purposeful method was used to comprise the 15 participants who are active AICS beneficiaries and residents in Cagayan de Oro City. The data were collected using In-depth Interview (IDI), Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and Key Informant Interview (KII). The Hyper-RESEARCH software was utilized to help the researcher identify codes, categories, and themes. Based on the narratives of the participants, four themes emerged: Necessity, Obtainability of Services, Responsive Services, and Saving Lives. The AICS is not only a big help, but patients with chronic illness describe the service as an extension of their lives. It is, thus, recommended to strengthen the Local Government Units, LGU's partnership and other stakeholders to sustain the efficiency of the implementation of the AICS services. Future research may consider the evaluation of the assistance to individuals in crisis services particularly the impact of Institutionalization Standard Operation or ISO accreditation on the efficiency of service in the Crisis Intervention Section in Cagayan de Oro City. Learning Action Cell Program and Teachers’ Functional Competency in Cagayan De Oro City

Learning Action Cell (LAC) program influences teachers’ functional competency. It is an integral part of professional development initiatives, which impacts teachers’ instructional skills, classroom management, assessment strategies, and professional growth. This study focused on the implementation of LAC program and teachers’ functional competency in the Division of Cagayan de Oro City. It sought to determine the relationship between the implementation of LAC and teachers’ functional competency and find the level of implementation of LAC and teachers’ functional competency. A descriptive-correlational method was used in this study. The respondents were one hundred forty-seven (147) public elementary school teachers. The survey questionnaire was the main instrument used to gather data. The statistical tools used were descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation. Pearson Product Moment Correlation (r) was employed to determine the relationship between the implementation of LAC and teachers’ functional competency. Findings revealed that the LAC program was well implemented, and the level of teachers’ functional competency was outstanding. Hence, there was a significant relationship between the implementation of LAC and teachers’ functional competency. It is recommended that LAC coordinators align LAC activities with the school’s broader professional development plans. Teachers should also engage in collaborative projects with other educators to share experiences and best practices. School heads should also provide training and support strategies for teachers.

Voices from within: Employee Perspectives in the Leading Insurance Company in Cagayan de Oro City

Since human people are an organization's most treasured asset, it is pivotal to learn how they can contribute to the organization efficiently, effectively and productively. This has been a tremendous challenge on the HR manager to evaluate actions and procedures that will progress the organization's efficacy. The aim of this qualitative study is to offer a wide-ranging notion of how human resource managers can enhance procedures to advance organizational performance in the leading insurance firm in Cagayan de Oro City. The study used a qualitative research design, concentrated on the transcendental phenomenological design of Husserl. Transcendental phenomenology (TPh), is a philosophical method to qualitative research design that pursues to comprehend human experience, it was established with noteworthy input from Husserl (Moustakas, 1994). Transcendental phenomenology is grounded on the principle that all previous assumptions (epoche) must be set away in order to see incidences through clear manifestations. By having this, it permits the factual implication of the phenomena to appear naturally alongside and within their exceptionality (Moustakas, 1994). Fifteen (15) individual participants from the insurance industry were involved in the study. In addition, semi-structured interview was created and conducted for triangulation purposes. After collecting relevant data from participant answers, a Thematic Approach was utilized to commence data analysis using Husserl's Phenomenological research design. The results showed that the factors influence the adoption of Strategic Human Resource Management Practices were competitive pressure, leadership and management and financial capability of the organization. Moreover, the participants indicated that the type of commitment that they have in their organization were continuance commitment, affective commitment and normative commitment. Furthermore, the participants gave answer on the influence of effective Strategic Human Resource Management practices in their organization which were employee involvement, employee retention and better organizational performance.

Design, Development and Implementation of a Diesel Rotary Injection Pump Mock-up for Autotronics Education and Research

This research endeavors to design and integrate a diesel rotary injection pump instructional tool into the BS in Autotronics program at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. The pedagogical tool is expected to significantly enhance the academic performance of BS in Autotronics students by providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of diesel rotary injection pump functionality. The study addresses the knowledge gap in the functionality of diesel rotary pumps, which is perceived as a significant challenge in the program. The learning outcomes demonstrate the development of student's cognitive skills, encompassing the rotary injection pump's theoretical and operational aspects. Furthermore, the actual laboratory activities utilizing the functional components of the mockup provide evidence of the expected manipulative skill set developed during the course coverage, ultimately preparing students for occupational applications in the field of autotronics.

Assessing Household Awareness of Indoor Air Pollution in Cagayan de Oro City: Implications for Health Promotion

Background & Aim: Indoor air pollution is a significant health threat, yet public awareness remains low, particularly in regions like the Philippines. This study assessed household awareness of indoor air pollution sources in a barangay in Cagayan de Oro City. Using the Health Promotion Model by Nola Pender and the Environmental Theory by Florence Nightingale, it sought to understand factors influencing awareness and inform health programs addressing indoor air pollution in the community. Methods & Materials: This study used a descriptive correlational design to explore how demographic factors influence awareness of indoor air pollution sources in a barangay in Cagayan De Oro City. Surveys, translated into the local language and validated through pilot testing, were administered to 264 randomly selected respondents. Statistical analyses, including T-tests and ANOVA, were conducted to assess associations between demographic variables and awareness levels. Results: Significant differences were observed in respondents' awareness levels of indoor air pollution sources across age groups, with middle-aged individuals demonstrating the highest awareness. Females exhibited consistently higher awareness compared to males across all pollution sources. Educational attainment influenced awareness levels, with postgraduates showing the highest awareness. Conclusion: The study revealed significant correlations between demographic factors and respondents' awareness of indoor air pollution sources. Age, gender, and educational attainment influence awareness levels, motivating individuals to prioritize proper ventilation for health preservation. Recommendation: Clinical practitioners should prioritize health education programs targeting middle-aged individuals, females, and those with higher educational attainment levels in addressing indoor air pollution awareness, emphasizing the importance of proper ventilation practices for health preservation and promoting healthier indoor environments in communities

Assessing Compliance with Domestic Waste Disposal Practices: Insights from Cagayan de Oro City

Background & Aim: Domestic waste, encompassing various types like food, recyclable, garden, and hazardous waste, poses significant challenges in rapidly urbanizing areas like Cagayan de Oro City. This study aimed to assess compliance with domestic waste disposal practices in a selected barangay, focusing on proper disposal, segregation, and reuse. Methods & Materials: A descriptive research design was employed to evaluate compliance with domestic waste disposal practices among Cagayan de Oro City barangay residents. Surveys were conducted with randomly selected respondents aged 20 to 65, covering waste disposal, segregation, and reuse. Stratified random sampling ensured proportional representation from various zones within the barangay, with a sample size of 349 respondents determined using Cochran's formula. Results: Significant differences were found in compliance based on age and gender, with middle-aged individuals and females showing higher levels, especially in reuse. Employment status significantly influenced compliance, with retirees and the unemployed exhibiting higher levels compared to employed. No significant differences were observed based on education, socio-economic status, or information source. Conclusion: Gender and employment significantly influenced compliance, with men showing greater disposal compliance and women demonstrating higher adherence to segregation and reuse. Age also played a notable role, particularly in influencing reuse practices. Targeted interventions considering these factors are essential for enhancing waste management strategies. Recommendation: Clinical practitioners should focus on tailored waste disposal programs to improve compliance with domestic waste disposal practices, emphasizing the importance of proper segregation, reuse, and disposal techniques to foster cleaner and healthier communities in rapidly urbanizing areas.

Pupils’ Reading Distraction and Confidence

Reading distractions is something to be eliminated to help pupils improve their comprehension to develop their reading confidence. This study aimed to determine the pupils’ level of reading distractions and confidence and its significant relationship. This employed a descriptive-correlational research design which utilized an adapted and modified questionnaire on reading distraction which included class environment factor, psychological factor and home and family factors to 235 Grade 5 pupils from North 1 District of Cagayan de Oro City Division through stratified random sampling using Slovin’s Formula. The study utilized descriptive statistics like Mean, Standard Deviation and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient for the significant relationship. Results showed that pupils’ overall reading is less distracted especially in class environment factor but most of the time distracted as to psychological and as to home and family factors. Also, pupils have reading confidence most of the time. Pupils’ reading distraction and reading confidence have moderate negative correlation. Thus, pupils’ reading confidence is not developed well when they are distracted. The more their reading is distracted, the lesser their reading confidence. The lesser their reading is distracted, the more their reading confidence increases. Teachers and family members may help promote a conducive place for reading, free from distractions to sustain the pupils’ reading confidence.

Cooperative Learning Strategies and Students’ Well-being

Cooperative learning is an instructional method which enables students to actively participate and work together in a collaborative manner. This study examined the extent to which students participate in cooperative learning and assessed their level of welfare. Furthermore, it examined the relationship between the degree of students' collaborative learning and their level of overall welfare. The study employed a descriptive-correlational and causal research approach. The study employed a researcher-developed questionnaire and utilized stratified random sampling with Slovin's Formula. The survey was done to 294 pupils from East II District, Division of Cagayan de Oro City. The study employed descriptive statistics such as Mean and Standard Deviation, the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to determine significant relationships, and multiple linear regression for finding which cooperative learning strategies singly or in combination influence/s the students’ well-being. Results reveal that students most of the time participate in cooperative learning strategies especially in peer support. Their overall well-being is most of the time moderate. Cooperative learning strategies have moderately positive correlation with the students’ overall well-being especially the peer support. Thus, cooperative learning strategies can be enhanced, implemented and integrated during teaching-learning delivery to holistically develop the overall students’ well-being.

Challenges and Attitude in Academic Writing: Basis for an Intervention Plan

Writing is an indispensable means of communication that facilitates expression and creativity. This study sought to ascertain the students’ demographic profile, evaluate the extent of writing challenges and attitudes toward writing, identify any significant relationships between the three variables, and identify the demographic profile that influences the students' attitude toward writing either independently or in association. The respondents were the one hundred fifty (150) Grade 11 Senior High School students from the Southwest II District Division of Cagayan de Oro City for the School Year 2022 – 2023. The instrument was adapted and modified from the study of Khadawardi (2022). The data collection and statistical processing were done using the weighted mean, correlation, Pearson Product Moment Correlation, and regression analysis. The results showed that the level of writing challenges in terms of content, mechanics, and organization is Highly Challenged and their level of attitude towards writing is High. There is a significant relationship between the demographic profile, writing challenges, and attitude towards writing. Age has a significant influence on students’ attitudes towards writing. Thus, students’ perceived writing challenges are correlated to their attitudes and age. Teachers and administrators need to implement the interventions recommended in this study like helping them to organize their thoughts and ideas.

Pupils’ Focus and Motivations: Their Influence on Mathematics Performance

Motivation and focus are vital for academic success, particularly in Mathematics, as evidenced in this study, which explores the relationship between pupils' focus and motivation and Mathematics performance. This study examined the correlation between focus, motivation, and Mathematics performance among three hundred fourteen (314) Grade 6 pupils in the West 1 District of Cagayan de Oro City during the School Year 2023–2024.The focus of the study was measured using a previously established questionnaire by Fredricks et al. (2011) and Ersoy (2015). This approach ensured a reliable and well-tested method for gauging pupil focus. A descriptive correlational and causal research design was used. Statistical treatments used are mean, SD, and correlational relationships to analyze the data. Findings revealed that the pupils are extrinsically motivated and perform satisfactorily in Mathematics. Motivation significantly influences academic outcomes, including focus and performance. Motivation that significantly predicts performance in Mathematics, as evidenced by a regression coefficient. Stimulating and fulfilling pupil motivation and satisfaction is fundamental to promoting successful learning and academic performance. Hence, focusing on techniques like mindfulness, minimizing distractions, promoting sustained concentration, improving pupils' ability to stay focused, and potentially enhancing academic outcomes in Mathematics is recommended.

Teachers Personality Traits and Work Stress Tolerance

The personality qualities of teachers are crucial because they work with a wide range of students. This study aimed to determine the personality traits and work stress tolerance of teachers in three secondary schools in the west ii district of the division of Cagayan de Oro City during the school year 2023-2024. Specifically, the study sought to identify teachers’ personality traits based on extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness, determine the level of teachers’ work stress tolerance, and identify the significant relationship between teachers’ personality traits and work stress tolerance. The study employed a descriptive-correlational and causal method using an adapted and modified survey-questionnaire. Conducted to 101 respondents who were selected through stratified random sampling using the Slovin’s formula. Descriptive statistics were utilized like, mean, standard deviation, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression. The study revealed that teachers most of the time possess conscientiousness personality traits and are uncertain about extroversion. Students with lack of learning motivation caused teachers to get stressed. Neuroticism personality trait has a significant relationship with work stress tolerance. Thus, teachers may proactively develop and share strategies for motivating students and may establish personalized stress management programs that cater to individuals with higher neurotic tendencies.

The ‘colorblindness’ of climate finance: how climate finance advances racial injustice in cities

The interactions between climate change and financial markets are increasingly becoming a topic of study, yet the ways in which climate finance reinforces new modes of racialization in urban climate adaptation projects remain an under-represented line of questioning in both academic and policy worlds. In order to uncover myriad processes of racialization occurring within financing modes that are mobilized to solve the climate crisis, this paper focuses on three different urban deal-making spaces: Cagayan De Oro City located in Mindanao, in the southern part of the Philippines; Mexico City, the capital of Mexico; and Philadelphia, PA, situated in the northeastern corridor of the United States. Through analysis of the financial deals structuring urban climate endeavors in these three different cultural and environmental milieus, we find that the ‘colorblindness’ of climate finance both reinforces historical environmental injustices and creates new spatialities of environmental racism through its reliance on structures of racial capitalism. In doing so we also show the relevance of the racial capitalism framework beyond its theoretical heartlands.

Leader-Member Exchange Relationship, School Culture, And Job Satisfaction: Their Implication to Senior High School Teachers’ Work Performance

Teaching might not be the most popular profession in the world, but it is undoubtedly the most populated. With the change in the Department of Education in the Philippines, school leaders and teachers are challenged to maintain work performance under stressful conditions. The aim of this study is to investigate the implication of leader-member exchange relationship, school culture, job satisfaction on teachers’ work performance. This study utilized descriptive correlational design and stratified random sampling on the selection of the 157 senior high school teachers from two private universities in Cagayan de Oro City, Academic Year 2023-2024. Data revealed that teachers and principals have a very strong leader-member exchange relationship and shows no significant difference on their relationship. Teachers’ meets their expectations in their overall school culture, has an overall moderate job satisfaction, and exhibits strength on their overall work performance. The study also reveals no significant difference of the teachers’ overall work performance in terms of profile. However, contribution on LMX, teachers’ collaboration on school culture, and job responsibilities and community attachments/linkages have contributed teachers’ work performance. Thus, the theory of Maslow confirms teachers’ needs based on the study’s results. Therefore, this study recommends teachers to possibly show sense of openness to their principal, foster collaboration with colleagues, enroll in graduates studies, engage in community services and teachers serving 5 years above to possibly improve their personal attributes and engagement in community activities. Principals, on the other hand, to provide equal opportunities and minimize the work of the teachers. School administrators to possibly meet the needs of the teaching staff in improving job satisfaction and future research to consider other variables as part of the study’s limitations.

Teachers’ Resilience and Self-Efficacy

Teachers’ resilience and self-efficacy play an important role in effectively handling educational challenges and its impact to student outcomes. This study sought to determine the teachers’ resilience level, the level of self-efficacy, and the relationship between teachers’ resilience level and self-efficacy among the three (3) Junior High Schools of South District, Division of Cagayan de Oro City of SY 2023-2024. A total of one hundred forty-eight (148) respondents through stratified sampling method. The study utilized a descriptive correlational research method and used both adopted questionnaire (Unda, 2022) and modified questionnaire (Pacamo, 2021) to gather the necessary data. Mean, Standard Deviation, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) were employed to ascertain the significant relationship between teachers’ resilience and self-efficacy. Results revealed that teachers’ resilience level was Very High while their self-efficacy level was Very Good. A moderate positive relationship exists between teachers’ resilience and self-efficacy. High level of resilience is fundamental for teachers to demonstrate effectiveness and self-efficacy. Hence, developing the factors in teachers’ resilience with focus on personal characteristics is recommended.

Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) is a fundamental subject area in Junior High School that aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop technical skills. This study aimed to determine the level of students’ motivation and academic performance in TLE-Beauty Care (Nail Care) Services subject and to find the significant relationship between the students’ motivation and academic performance while taking the subject. The study employed descriptive-correlational research with content analysis. It utilized an adapted and modified survey questionnaire from Dimaunahan et al. (2021), and students’ final rating in TLE-Beauty Care (Nail Care) Services subject as instruments of this study from Grade 10 students who had been previously enrolled in Grade-9 TLE-Beauty Care (Nail Care) Services during School Year 2022-2023 from the four identified schools in Cagayan De Oro City through a purposive universal sampling procedure. Findings revealed that the respondents agreed that they are highly motivated to take TLE- Beauty Care (Nail Care) Services subject that led them to achieve Outstanding academic performance. The variables in motivation such as subject matter, self-efficacy, and self-sufficiency have significant relationships with academic performance except family dynamics. Thus, students take the TLE- Beauty Care (Nail Care) Services subject because they are motivated. Strengthening the integration of the affective targets of learning the subject's basic, common, and core competencies, and the teacher’s upskilling for continued professional development is recommended.

Teachers’ Competence and Learners’ Academic Performance

Teachers are the nation's development catalysts. They enable the country to generate and nurture learners who could propel it forward and lead to development. This paper aimed to determine the level of teachers’ gained information on Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) and its relation to their learners’ academic performance. The independent variable is on teachers’ gained information on PPST Domains through In-Service Training in terms of Content Knowledge and Pedagogy, Learning Environment, Diversity of Learners, Curriculum and Planning, Assessment and Reporting, Community Linkages and Professional Engagement, and Personal Growth and Professional Development while the dependent variable is the learners’ academic performance. This study was conducted at West City Central School in the Division of Cagayan de Oro City. The researcher used the convenience sampling technique and a descriptive-correlational with content analysis research design and employed an adopted questionnaire given to teachers (n=161) while data analysis of learners’ (n=701) academic performance was gathered. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistical tools such as frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient. Results revealed that the level of teachers’ gained information on PPST domains was at Very High Level of Information while the learners’ academic Performance was at Very Satisfactory Level. Moreover, Teachers’ gained information on PPST domain was significantly correlated with the learners’ academic performance. Thus, it is recommended that schools may provide more trainings and information drive on the PPST Domain Community Linkages and Professional Engagement as it will provide ideas, guidance and assistance for teachers so that they can fully perform well in all of the PPST domains and improve learners’ academic performance.

The Mediating Role of Credibility and Satisfaction in Social Media Recruitment Outcomes

The growing popularity of social media has encouraged recruitment managers to adopt social media recruitment. The study aims to investigate the relationship between social media recruitment (SMR) and recruitment outcomes (ROs), encompassing both pre-hire and post-hire stages. The research study also aims to examine whether the relationship between SMR intention and ROs is mediated by credibility and satisfaction (CS). The growing strategy of SMRs encouraged recruiters to use social media in the recruitment process. However, there is a need to investigate the mediating role of CS between SMR and the ROs. This study provides a strong emphasis on communicating accurate and sufficient information on hiring organizations to the applicants which will facilitate the achievement of expected good recruitment outcomes. Data has been collected from the human resource professionals in Iligan City to Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. Data was analyzed through structural equation modelling. The results of the study revealed that there is a significant relationship between SMR and ROs, particularly for pre-hire and post-hire outcomes. The results also demonstrated that CS serves as a mediator in the correlation between SMR intention and ROs.

Library Support: Implications on Student Well-being

Fostering healthy, supportive contexts that holistically enrich growth is fundamental to the central mission of educational institutions. This study evaluated how college students perceive library support across various dimensions and its influence on their well-being, involving 303 students from a private institution in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. Utilizing a researcher-made questionnaire and focus group discussions, it explored the relationship between library support and student well-being. The study revealed that the participants' assessment of library support across physical, intellectual, social, and environmental dimensions was generally high, reflecting satisfaction with resources, assistance, social environments, and the library's ambiance. They also reported high well-being levels in physical, cognitive, and social aspects, indicating a positive overall self-assessment. The participants' library support assessment significantly influenced their well-being levels, suggesting that high-quality library support contributes to higher well-being. Key themes from the students' library support experiences included a conducive environment, technological support, collaboration opportunities, and distractions. This study emphasizes the significant role of academic libraries in enhancing student well-being, advocating for comprehensive library services and a holistic approach to student welfare in higher education. It points to institutions to provide welcoming and collaborative library spaces by applying a "therapeutic landscape" ethos across education, and conducting further research on the influence of library support on well-being across different contexts.
