(Invited) Trials and Tribulations on Scaling Metal Recovery Technology from Lab to Market

PowerTech Water, Inc. d/b/a ElectraMet (ElectraMet) is a cleantech company founded in 2014 in Lexington, KY with the goal of applying carbon and electrochemistry to solve fundamental challenges in wastewater and process water applications. There exists a broad array of separation applications that could be tackled through electrochemical routes, and ElectraMet has worked on many of them.Early in ElectraMet’s history, focus was directed towards salt removal applications such as salt-free water softening, brackish water desalination, and ultra-pure water production. While some traction was found in these spaces, penetration of a new technology versus entrenched incumbents such as reverse osmosis and distillation made the sales process difficult. Limitations in what the technology could and could not do were also determined. Therefore, within the first few years of operation, focus shifted towards particular customer pain points, specifically metals separation applications. Problematic metals concentrations are present in drinking water, industrial effluents, and storm runoff, just to name a few. As a growing but still small business, it is important to choose a beachhead market where you can have the strongest value proposition, and electrochemical separations of metals offered a unique opportunity to solve challenges in the metals separation space. Therefore, considerable work has gone into developing these separation processes for specific metals and specific markets.In this talk, the early history of the company will be reviewed, including technology, funding, and market applications. The impact of strategic advisors and early successes will be discussed with regards to the direction of the company. Ultimately, product-market-fit and the strategies and struggles in building a small business will be presented. Efforts will be made to highlight possible pitfalls, roadblocks, and opportunities as seen through this particular journey.

Investigating Cathode Dynamics in Realistic Desalination Reactors Using Operando High-Energy Synchrotron X-Ray Microscopy

Four billion people suffer from lack of clean water at least one month of the year.[1] This critical water shortage applies not only to the supply of potable water, but also to water for use in industrial, agricultural, and energy applications. While water resources like seawater are abundant, hardly any water resource is clean enough for direct use. Desalination provides a methodology to render unusable waters from such water resources fit for use. An innovative and particularly energy-efficient electrochemistry-based approach is the Desalination Battery (DB), which stores the energy input during desalination in chemical bonds between ions and faradaic electrode, allowing for its recovery during the salination process. DBs are at the forefront of the water-energy nexus[2]. While they are promising for seawater desalination (e.g., for seawater to brackish water conversion), practical implementation and their full potential still need to be unlocked. To this end, foundational understanding of the atomic- to electrode-scale physics/chemistry underlying functionality and degradation must be unraveled.Towards this end, we utilized our unique flow-by reactor setup to combine electrochemistry, conductivity, and temperature measurements with high-energy (75 keV) operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction (HEXRD) microscopy. Our investigation encompasses both the atomic and electrode levels, using a 3-electrodes setup with LiMn2O4 and Na0.44MnO2 as electrode active materials. As such, we were able to simulate a realistic electrode environment for operando measurements, as well as observe spatially resolved structural changes by scanning the beam across the electrodes surface. These phenomena are manifested through changes in unit cell parameters and the emergence of new phases during desalination cycles. Specifically, we tracked the changes in XRD patterns over the course of several desalination cycles in LiCl and NaCl solutions, as well as synthetic seawater and mixed solutions of LiCl/MgCl2. We were able to observe high selectivity of LiMn2O4 towards Li+, even in the highly concentrated synthetic seawater solutions, and could not observe the emergence of a new Mg+ rich phase down to potentials of 0 V vs. AgCl. Na0.44MnO2 exhibited good cycling behavior in synthetic seawater akin to pure NaCl solutions, and apart from the Na+ rich phase showed no signs of additional new phases, suggesting a highly selective nature towards Na+. Furthermore, we compared constant current and constant potential protocols and observed distinct differences in peak shift behavior. Ongoing analysis of the unit cell parameters and atomic positions allows us to allocate specific intercalation sites to specific potentials, providing foundational insight into the chemistry and physics underlying the selectivity of these materials.Literature:[1] M. Resistance and resilience: Tidal freshwater marsh response and recovery to acute and chronic saltwater intrusion

The ability to both resist and recover from disturbances like storm surge and saltwater intrusion plays a key role in shaping the structure and function of tidal marshes. In this study, porewater chemistry, vegetation, and soil elevation change were measured in field plots of a tidal freshwater marsh exposed to four years of experimental press (chronic) and pulse (acute) brackish water additions followed by five years of recovery to assess their resistance and resilience to saltwater intrusion. Press additions produced significant, widespread changes in marsh structure and function including increased porewater N and P, reduced macrophyte cover and species richness, and loss of soil surface elevation whereas pulse additions had little effect. Once dosing ceased, porewater chemistry, vegetation and soils in press plots recovered at differing rates, with porewater N and P declining to background levels after one year, plant cover and species richness increasing within two to four years, and soil surface elevation increasing to similar levels found in control plots after five years. The plant community in the press treatment converged with the other treatments after 3–4 years, though macrophyte species exhibited varying rates of recovery. Ground cover (Ludwigia repens) and soft stem species (Persicaria) that declined first, recovered faster than Zizaniopsis miliacea that was more resistant but less resilient to brackish water intrusion. While tidal freshwater marshes are resistant and resilient to pulses such as those that stem from hurricanes and storm surges, continued long-term intrusion events like sea level rise (SLR) will likely lead to conversion into brackish marsh. Understanding long-term responses and tradeoffs in resistance and recovery as shown in this experiment offers insight into the future trajectory of tidal freshwater marshes as well as broader ecosystem responses to disturbance and recovery crucial to management and restoration.

Integrating double-labeling HCR-FISH into a multidisciplinary pipeline for biofouling assessment on austenitic stainless steel in brackish seawater circuit

This study modified and integrated a bioimaging method of hybridization chain reaction fluorescence in situ hybridization (HCR-FISH) into a pipeline for assessing biofouling on stainless steel (SS). A modified protocol of double-labeling HCR-FISH was directly applied to two surface types of SS grade EN 1.4404 to detect localized bacteria and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) by targeting bacterial 16 S rRNA genes and dissimilatory sulfite reductase (dsrB) genes, respectively. The protocol was first validated using microbial pure cultures and materials before being integrated into a biofouling assessment pipeline of SS in a laboratory-scale brackish water circuit, incorporating electrochemical, surface, and molecular biology characterization analyses. The double-labeling HCR-FISH improved bioimaging of surface biofilm morphology and microbial distribution, surpassing monochrome staining methods. This method was compatible and complemented other microscopy techniques and molecular biological analyses, providing additional insights into the biofilms and deposits on the alloy surfaces. The implemented assessment pipeline for biofouling determination frequently detected the ennoblement phenomenon in the evolution of marine biofilm on SS surfaces. However, within the experimental timeframe, microbial activities in the brackish seawater circuit did not flourish significantly, resulting in minimal impact on the steel material. Additionally, surface type and roughness may correlate with microbial adhesion, biofilm growth, and the deformation of passivation layers in SS. Despite abundant sessile bacteria, particularly opportunistic microorganisms, on the steel surfaces, no direct correlations with biodeterioration phenomena or influences of surface roughness of an alloy and the presence of biofilm were conclusively established.

Application of Crustaceans as Ecological Markers for the Assessment of Pollution of Brackish Lakes of Bulgaria Based on Their Ability to Accumulate the Heavy Metals Cd, Zn and Ni

The present study aimed to assess the pollution of Bulgarian brackish lakes based on their ability to accumulate the heavy metals Cd, Zn and Ni. Physicochemical parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity and salinity of the waters, were determined by potentiometric methods. The heavy metal content of the water and crustacean samples was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The highest pH in the investigated lakes (Atanasovsko Lake, Poda and Pomorie Lake) in the period May–September 2021 was found in the month of September, in the waters of Atanasovsko Lake (8.84). The concentrations of Cd measured in Atanasovsko Lake in the fall were in the order of 0.0125 µg/L—the highest value recorded for all the studied water bodies. The concentrations of zinc and nickel in the waters did not exceed the norms in Bulgarian legislation. The dynamics of biogenic elements (Zn and Ni) in crustaceans were inversely proportional to those found in the waters. The levels of the toxicant cadmium as well as the metals zinc and nickel in the species Gammarus spp. and Atremia spp., inhabiting all analyzed water bodies, were significantly lower than those specified in the Bulgarian and European legislation. The pH and electrical conductivity parameters of the tested waters, as well as the concentrations of the heavy metals, cadmium, zinc and nickel, were within the recommended values. High positive correlations were determined between the content of nickel, on the one hand, and cadmium and zinc, on the other, in the organism of the investigated crustaceans. A longer period of research is needed to accurately determine the degree of contamination of these waters.

DEVELOPMENT OF A SYSTEM WITH SUSTAINABLE SUPPLEMENTAL HEATING: AN ALTERNATIVE TO COMBAT WATER SCARCITY

The scarcity of water resources has led researchers to investigate and develop mechanisms for the good use of saline and brackish waters to produce drinking water. In Brazil, the water crisis has always been a reality. The objective was to carry out desalination through a prototyped system with sustainable supplementary heating, to help supply drinking water to residents who face precarious living conditions. The research is aimed at the Bailique Archipelago and Sucuriju District, located in the extreme east of the State of Amapá and bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. It presents a quali-quantitative analysis, as it involves the construction of the prototype and temperature and physical-chemical tests of water samples. Regarding the results, desalination was carried out using a prototype, with subsequent analysis of the physical-chemical conditions of the interstitial waters to correlate with the potability parameters. The supplementary heating positioned on the sides of the system converged solar rays towards the greenhouse that contains salt water inside, and a device on the glass slope collected the condensed water. The 50cm x 50cm model desalinated 890mL and the 25cm x 25cm model desalinated 190mL of water in one day, reaching a maximum temperature of 91 ºC.

Teknik Pembenihan Ikan Kerapu Cantang (Ephinephelus sp.) di Balai Budidaya Air Payau, Situbondo, Jawa Timur

Grouper fish (Epinephelus sp.) is one of the popular marine fish species in the market in Indonesia and abroad in Southeast Asia, this fish has high economic value, good taste. Currently, the development of grouper aquaculture has been growing, so the seeds must be available continuously to meet the demand for seeds, therefore the foundation of interspecies crosses between groupers that have a high heterosis effect in growth traits, disease resistance and environmental resistance. This research activity was carried out at the Brackish Water Aquaculture Center located in Situbondo, East Java and was carried out from June 19, 2023 to August 19, 2023. The working method used in the Field Work Practice is descriptive method with data collection including primary and secondary. The technique of grouper hatchery conducted at the Brackish Water Aquaculture Fisheries Center stages include tub preparation, broodstock rearing, hybridization, hatching and egg stocking, larval development, feeding, water quality management, growth sampling and grading, pests and diseases, and harvesting and marketing. The results of the observed parameters are HR 73.25%, SR 15.98%, FR 74.16%. Water quality management carried out in grouper hatcheries is water reduction and water changes according to larval age, siphon once a week and water quality tests.

Classification, density, and spatial distribution of polychaete reefs in the Coorong, South Australia

The cosmopolitan species Ficopomatus enigmaticus is one of the most prominent providers of polychaete reefs in shallow and brackish waters. The effects of polychaete reefs on the environment can be positive or negative subject to their structural complexity and vary with local environmental conditions and over time. The Coorong is a large temperate estuarine and lagoonal system with extensive polychaete reefs built by F. enigmaticus. The aims of this study were to (1) classify polychaete reefs based on size and morphology, (2) quantify reef density, (3) assess their spatial distribution and (4) assess the correlation between reefs (e.g., density, size) with the environmental gradient. Structural morphologies of F. enigmaticus were classified as either halo, circular, irregular, platform or fringing reef types. The largest densities of polychaete reefs were recorded in the vicinity of the mouth of the estuary with 224 reefs per ha compared to the lagoon (62 reefs per ha). The most common reef morphology was circular and largest sizes in the lagoon were positively correlated with salinity, chlorophyll a, TRIX (trophic index) and bicarbonate. The largest reef diameter recorded was 11.3 m, exceeding previously known F. enigmaticus circular reef formations globally. The growth of large circular reefs may have benefitted from low flows and eutrophic conditions in the Coorong during the last two decades. This study serves as an important baseline for future assessments of reef change in a Ramsar listed wetland. Furthermore, this study highlights reef characteristics of F. enigmaticus across an environmental gradient, which can be informative for the management of flow and eutrophication in estuaries and coastal lagoons.

Coal tar pitch porous carbon-based bimolecular crosslinked hydrogel evaporator for solar-driven efficient water purification

Hydrogel evaporators have been widely used in solar-driven interfacial water evaporation due to their good thermal insulation, strong hydrophilicity, and rich internal pores. However, the occlusion pores in the hydrogel with a single molecule chain not only limit water transportation but also lead to serious salt crystallization. Hence, we developed a hydrogel evaporator (NSC-PVA/8CMC) with an abundant and open pore structure by cross-linking polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). In which, the low-cost amorphous coal tar pitch porous carbon (NSC) is used to absorb light and improve light-to-heat conversion. The porous structure and thermal insulation (0.37 W m−1 K−1) of NSC-PVA/8CMC are conducive to excellent light absorption (≈99.02 %) and minimizing heat loss, finally leading to excellent photothermal conversion (1.44 kg m−2 h−1, 72.96 %, 1 sun). More significantly, NSC-PVA/8CMC with a strong desalination capacity can provide a self-purifying performance in seawater and brackish water. At the same time, the innovative attempt to use coal tar pitch as the photothermal conversion material has expanded the application scope of coal tar pitch.

Cyanobacteria-cyanophage interactions between freshwater and marine ecosystems based on large-scale cyanophage genomic analysis

The disparities in harmful algal blooms dynamics are largely attributed to variations in cyanobacteria populations within aquatic ecosystems. However, cyanobacteria-cyanophage interactions and their role in shaping cyanobacterial populations has been previously underappreciated. To address this knowledge gap, we isolated and sequenced 42 cyanophages from diverse water sources in China, with the majority (n = 35) originating from freshwater sources. We designated these sequences as the “Novel Cyanophage Genome sequence Collection” (NCGC). NCGC displayed notable genetic variations, with 95 % (40/42) of the sequences representing previously unidentified taxonomic ranks. By integrating NCGC with public data of cyanophages and cyanobacteria, we found evidence for more frequent historical cyanobacteria-cyanophage interactions in freshwater ecosystems. This was evidenced by a higher prevalence of prophage integrase-related genes in freshwater cyanophages (37.97 %) than marine cyanophages (7.42 %). In addition, freshwater cyanophages could infect a broader range of cyanobacteria orders (n = 4) than marine ones (n = 0). Correspondingly, freshwater cyanobacteria harbored more defense systems per million base pairs in their genomes, indicating more frequent phage infections. Evolutionary and cyanophage epidemiological studies suggest that interactions between cyanobacteria and cyanophages in freshwater and marine ecosystems are interconnected, and that brackish water can act as a transitional zone for freshwater and marine cyanophages. In conclusion, our research significantly expands the genetic information database of cyanophage, offering a wider selection of cyanophages to control harmful cyanobacterial blooms. Additionally, we represent a pioneering large-scale and comprehensive analysis of cyanobacteria and cyanophage sequencing data, and it provides theoretical guidance for the application of cyanophages in different environments.

Encrusting bryozoan attached to terrestrial plant leaves from brackish deposits of the Lefipán Formation (Patagonia, Argentina), close to the K/Pg boundary

Cretaceous bryozoans from South America have received limited attention despite their sporadic documentation. The K/Pg boundary has been identified in numerous fossil-rich basins in Patagonia, where bryozoans are frequent components of the faunas. Material recovered from upper Maastrichtian outcrops of the Lefipán Formation in the Cañadón Asfalto Basin (Patagonia, Argentina) includes a unique species of cheilostome bryozoan, Conopeum foliorum n. sp., attached to leaf remains of terrestrial plants and associated with scarce euryhaline bivalves. It likely thrived in a warm climate, shallow, well-lit brackish environment influenced by tides, located along the northwest margin of the Paso del Sapo embayment. Conopeum foliorum n. sp. is currently among the earliest known bryozoans from brackish water environments, and the second oldest documented instance of a bryozoan encrusting leaves of terrestrial plants, representing the first of such finding in South America. Based on our findings and available sedimentological and paleoecological data from previous studies, we interpreted Conopeum foliorum n. sp. as a fast-growing opportunistic taxon displaying euryhaline habits and prone to colonize terrestrial plant leaves deposited in a brackish-water nearshore environment.

Analisis Uji Kuat Tekan Beton pada Campuran Air Payau Desa Tellumpanua Kecamatan Suppa

Increased economic growth in the city of Parepare with the presence of buildings around the estuary. In general, the composition of concrete making materials is taken from good materials. The problem encountered in the field is that the quality of concrete in construction decreases due to brackish water, causing structural elements in the construction to become porous. Meanwhile, preventive measures are rarely or never taken. As a result, the construction life is very short. Brackish water is one of the causes of structural failure. This is due to the content of sulfate and chloride ions in water containing salt/salts that react with chemical elements in reinforcing steel resulting in corrosion of the reinforcement. The purpose of the study was to analyse the compressive strength of concrete with a mixture of clean water against the percentage of brackish water with a maintenance age of 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. The results showed that brackish water had an impact on reducing the compressive strength of concrete due to the high chemical content in brackish water such as Sulfate (SO²¯) of 52.5 in brackish water in Kenjeran and 62.5 in brackish water in mangrove. Dissolved Solids (TDS) of 15188 mg/l in kenjeran brackish water and 3436 mg/l in mangrove brackish water. Organic Content (KMnO) of 8.05 mg/l in kenjeran brackish water and 6.69 mg/l in mangrove brackish water is too high, so the chemical content contained in brackish water can damage the compounds in the cement content and decrease the strength of the materials contained in the concrete. In this case it can result in concrete having a very low durability.

Pilot-scale testing of a multi-tube type falling film distillation column equipped with a biphasic thermosyphon as a new alternative for the desalination of brackish water and seawater

This paper proposes an innovative technology for desalinating brackish water and seawater using a multi-tube type falling film distillation column integrated with a biphasic thermosyphon. Based on the literature survey, this proposal has not been previously explored. In this study, the viability of the pilot-scale application of this technology for desalination was tested, and the process performance was evaluated in terms of distillate flow rate, salinity removal, and energy consumption, considering different experimental conditions. Synthetic solutions containing 10.0 and 35.0 g/L of sodium chloride were used to simulate brackish water and seawater salinities, respectively. The thermal desalination pilot plant integrating a compact falling film distillation column and a biphasic thermosyphon demonstrated high effectiveness, consistently producing desalinated water with a conductivity below 10 μS cm−1. Considering both concentrations, the optimal condition for desalinated water production was a feed temperature of 85 °C, a vapor chamber temperature of 121 °C, and an energy consumption of 16 kW. This new technological option’s energy consumption is approximately 33 % lower than that of a simulated flash distillation column operating under similar conditions. In conclusion, this study presents promising results, establishing falling film distillation technology as a viable alternative for desalinating brackish water and seawater.

Enhanced forward osmosis desalination of brackish water using phase-separating ternary organic draw solutions of hydroxypropyl cellulose and propylene glycol propyl ether.

This study introduces draw solutions for application in forward osmosis (FO) processes, combining mono propylene glycol propyl ether (PGPE) with the cellulose derivative hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC). A total of 16 unique single-solute and ternary organic draw solutions were prepared and evaluated, leading to the selection of three promising solutions for further investigation. Notably, eight of the initial organic draw solutions demonstrated osmotic pressures exceeding 2.4MPa. The dynamic viscosities of all draw solutions exhibited a significant reduction with increasing temperature. Among the investigated solutions, the 0.25HPC-3.75PGPE demonstrated the most favorable FO performance, achieving average experimental water fluxes of 11.062 and 9.852 Lm-2h-1 (LMH) against a 1g/L NaCl brackish feed solution across two FO runs. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC, MW ~100,000) was mixed with propylene glycol propyl ether (PGPE) as draw solutes for FO processes. Seven combinations of HPC and PGPE produced osmolalities greater than 1000 mOsm/kg. 0.5HPC-7.5PGPE ternary draw solution achieved experimental water fluxes of 11.062 and 9.852 LMH against 1g/L NaCl brackish feed solution. Leveraging the LCSTs of these ternary organic solutions holds promise for improved separation and regeneration processes.

Evaluation of suitable sites for concentrated solar power desalination systems: case study of Mauritania

It is imperative to address the critical problem of water scarcity in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in light of the aggravating effects of climate change brought on by the extraction of fossil fuels. In order to ensure the availability of drinkable water in these places, this research proposes integrating concentrated solar power (CSP) with desalination systems (DS). Present research is focused on identifying and evaluating potential locations for DS/CSP implementation within Mauritania by employing a comprehensive, multi-criteria decision-making framework. This framework synthesizes mathematical approaches from multi-criteria analysis with geospatial analysis techniques, considering a range of factors including environmental impact, economic viability, demographic demands, and climatic conditions. Research findings reveal that 10% of the Mauritanian, approximately 103070 km2, presents optimal conditions for the deployment of DS/CSP facilities. The study delineates the coastal regions as prime candidates for seawater desalination plants, while the densely populated southeastern areas are identified as suitable for brackish water desalination systems. Conversely, the less inhabited northern territories hold the potential for decentralized brackish water desalination plants. Hence this study provides a holistic approach for DS/CSP systems installation to manage water scarcity as well as energy security issues in Mauritania. And also provides basis for formulating future policies in the region.

Biokinetics of Americium-241 in the euryhaline diamond sturgeon Acipenser gueldenstaedtii following its uptake from water or food

Americium-241 whole body and internal biokinetics were experimentally investigated in the euryhaline diamond sturgeon Acipenser gueldenstaedtii during its uptake from water and food, in fresh (FW) and brackish water (BW; 9 psu). Whole-body uptake rates of 241Am from water and subsequent depuration rates were quantified over 14 and 28 days, respectively, and assimilation efficiency (AE) of 241Am from diet (chironomid) was determined over 28 days. FW reduced the biological half-life of 241Am following aqueous uptake by an order of magnitude. In contrast BW greatly reduced 241Am assimilation efficiency (AE) from diet (chironomid) by several orders of magnitude (from an AE of 8.5% (FW) down to 0.003% (BW)). Hence, salinity per se is indicated as a major environmental variable in determining the radiological exposure of A. gueldenstaedtii to 241Am. During aqueous exposure BW appreciably increased 241Am activity concentrations in most body components, but aqueous or dietary exposure pathway at either salinity did not determine marked differences in how 241Am was distributed among six body components. The highly mineralized skin of A. gueldenstaedtii recurred as a major repository of 241Am in all experimental treatments, as high as 50% among body components, due to its internal transfer from diet, surface adsorption and/or active absorption from water. The indicated prominence of the aqueous, compared to the dietary, exposure pathway for 241Am accumulation by A. gueldenstaedtii suggests its radiological exposure would be enhanced by BW as it leads to its greater long-term retention, due to a much longer biological half-life.

Order-in-disordered ultrathin carbon nanostructure with nitrogen-rich defects bridged by pseudographitic domains for high-performance ion capture

Carbon materials with defect-rich structure are highly demanded for various electrochemical scenes, but encountering a conflict with the deteriorative intrinsic conductivity. Herein, we build a highway-mediated nanoarchitecture that consists of the ordered pseudographitic nanodomains among disordered highly nitrogen-doped segments through a supramolecular self-assembly strategy. The “order-in-disorder” nanosheet-like carbon obtained at 800 °C (O/D NSLC-800) achieves a tradeoff with high defect degree (21.9 at% of doped nitrogen) and compensated electrical conductivity simultaneously. As expected, symmetrical O/D NSLC-800 electrodes exhibit superior capacitive deionization (CDI) performance, including brackish water desalination (≈82 mgNaCl g−1 at a cell voltage of 1.6 V in a 1000 mg L−1 NaCl solution) and reusage of actual refining circulating cooling water, outperforming most of the reported state-of-the-art CDI electrodes. The implanted pseudographitic nanodomains lower the resistance and activation energy of charge transfer, which motivates the synergy of hosting sites of multiple nitrogen configurations. Our findings shed light on electrically conductive nanoarchitecture design of defect-rich materials for advanced electrochemical applications based on molecular-level modulation.

Genome structural variants shape adaptive success of an invasive urban malaria vector Anopheles stephensi.

Global changes are associated with the emergence of several invasive species. However, the genomic determinants of the adaptive success of an invasive species in a new environment remain poorly understood. Genomic structural variants (SVs), consisting of copy number variants, play an important role in adaptation. SVs often cause large adaptive shifts in ecologically important traits, which makes SVs compelling candidates for driving rapid adaptations to environmental changes, which is critical to invasive success. To address this problem, we investigated the role SVs play in the adaptive success of Anopheles stephensi , a primary vector of urban malaria in South Asia and an invasive malaria vector in several South Asian islands and Africa. We collected whole genome sequencing data from 115 mosquitoes from invasive island populations and four locations from mainland India, an ancestral range for the species. We identified 2,988 duplication copy number variants and 16,038 deletions in these strains, with ∼50% overlapping genes. SVs are enriched in genomic regions with signatures of selective sweeps in the mainland and invasive island populations, implying a putative adaptive role of SVs. Nearly all high-frequency SVs, including the candidate adaptive variants, in the invasive island populations are present on the mainland, suggesting a major contribution of existing variation to the success of the island populations. Among the candidate adaptive SVs, three duplications involving toxin-resistance genes evolved, likely due to the widespread application of insecticides in India since the 1950s. We also identify two SVs associated with the adaptation of An. stephensi larvae to brackish water in the island and two coastal mainland populations, where the mutations likely originated. Our results suggest that existing SVs play a vital role in the evolutionary success of An. stephensi in new environmental conditions.

Understanding degradation of capacitive deionization cells: Full–cell simulations with anode corrosion

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is notable for its ability to perform low–energy desalination of brackish water and selective separation/recovery of salt and metal ions. However, redox side–reactions at porous carbon electrodes, such as the formation of weakly–acidic, oxygen–containing surface groups, limit ion electrosorption into double layers and electrode lifespan. In this study, we employ porous electrode theory to investigate the coupled effects of transport, electrosorption, redox reactions, and acid/base surface chemistry in practical flow through electrode (FTE) CDI cells, and we develop an efficient numerical solver that allows us to perform full–cell simulations over numerous charging/discharging cycles. We verify that our high fidelity model's predictions agree with analytical solutions in the limit of small voltage perturbations, and we demonstrate the significance of accurately capturing interplay between pH dynamics and surface chemistry. Our simulations demonstrate that anodic oxidation in FTE CDI is substantially inhomogeneous in space and in time, exhibiting cyclic protonation/deprotonation of surface groups and traveling, shock–like pH fronts. Moreover, we uncover connections between microscopic behavior and macroscopic performance parameters, demonstrating that this theoretical and numerical approach may substantially benefit the practical design optimization of CDI cells.
