PERAN BUKU KOMIK DALAM MENINGKATKAN MOTIVASI BELAJAR PESERTA DIDIK

Students face various challenges in improving the quality and success of learning. Thus, a strong learning motivation factor is needed so that students are able to face learning challenges. The use of comic book media is one way to encourage students' interest in learning. The use of comic books as a learning medium has been widely implemented and the results have been proven to increase students' motivation to learn. The method used is in the form of literature study by searching, combining, and reviewing publications according to the topic of discussion. Data was taken from google scholar with the keyword "student learning motivation & comic books" in the time span from 2019 to 2024 and around 14,500 articles and 47 articles were obtained in accordance with the research theme. The results of the study show that comic books as a learning medium and increase students' motivation, help better understanding of topics and foster a positive attitude towards learning by providing an interesting and interactive learning experience.

This selection process has resulted in silk materials with novel chemistry and properties to support organism survival in nature, yet with newfound utility in everything from comic books and automobiles to medicine. With growing global concerns related to environmental health, silks also serve as an invaluable instructional guide to the future of sustainable material designs.

Inventing a Language for Transnational Memory: An Interview with Sole Otero

ABSTRACT Based between Angoulême and Bariloche, Sole Otero is a published and increasingly translated comics author. Her award-winning graphic novel Naftalina (2020) intertwines the memories of four generations of women in a family which fled from fascist Italy to Argentina in the 1920s, with the coming-of-age of the author’s alter-ego, Rocío, in the South of Buenos Aires shaken by the 2001 crisis. The language created for Naftalina is a compelling example of the multilingualism of Italian memory within the transnational Italian comics scene. In this interview, Sole Otero speaks about exploring a constellation of family relations and blurring ideas of linear and realistic accounts of history, which allows the distinctive language and aesthetic of this comic book to emerge. The interview foregrounds Naftalina as a graphic novel that illuminates current developments of comics autobiography and storytelling, and more broadly the relationship between comics and memory cultures.

Venha a nós o reino do amanhã: uma análise da ideia de salvação e dos elementos religiosos presentes na graphic novel de Mark Waid e Alex Ross

It aims to analyze the religiosity and the idea of salvation present in Kingdom Come by Mark Waid (writer) and Alex Ross (artist). For this purpose, the cartographic-critical method developed by researcher Iuri Andreás Reblin will be employed. It analyzes the cited story based on other articles on the subject, especially those focusing on the relationship between the comic book with the biblical text of the Apocalypse of John, and based on relevant theological concepts such as salvation and redemption to identify how they are present in the graphic novel.

President Wonder Woman and Congresswoman Batgirl: the authoritarian Überfrau and democratic resilience in superheroine comics

ABSTRACT Comic books are important sites where norms related to gender, leadership, and democratic engagement are negotiated. In this essay, we examine two comic book depictions of women’s political leadership: Diana Prince/Wonder Woman’s stint as US president, published in 1944, and Barbara Gordon/Batgirl’s tenure as a member of US Congress, published between 1972 and 1980. We contrast Wonder Woman’s tale of democratic fragility and gendered conflict with a Batgirl narrative that promotes a more complex view of women’s political agency and subordinates superheroism to the strength of democratic community. We contend that Wonder Woman #7 reflects the fascist tendencies observed in other Golden Age comics and theorize Überfrau as a counterpart to Übermensch, rooted in an ostensible ethic of protection and authoritarian white femininity. Reading Wonder Woman #7 through the lens of the Überfrau reveals the contours of an antidemocratic white women’s authoritarianism that continues to resonate in twenty-first century politics. An antidote to the reactionary Überfrau is offered by Batgirl, who eschews the role of super savior and puts the responsibility for democratic health into voters’ hands. We conclude by examining how these contrasting visions of women’s political leadership are echoed by women politicians in contemporary political culture.

The Transformative Role of Digital Tools in Comic Book Preservation

Traditionally viewed as static repositories, archives are now seen as dynamic entities capable of continuous reconfiguration and reinterpretation. This study examines how digital practices in comic book archiving maintain historical and emotional integrity, while making these artefacts relevant to contemporary audiences. This paper explores the theories of Wolfgang Ernst, Michel Foucault, Lev Manovich, and others in order to explain digital archiving as a dynamic and interpretive act that shapes historical narratives and cultural memory. Digital restoration of comic books focuses on preserving the original aesthetic and historical context, while recoloring revitalizes visual elements to enhance appeal. Reimagining involves comprehensive reinterpretation and aligns with new media theories in order to offer fresh perspectives on historical narratives. The discussion shows how these practices democratize access to cultural heritage, transforming archives into active sites of cultural engagement and potentiality. By balancing technical precision and interpretive insight, digital artists and archivists aim at ensuring that comic books remain vibrant and meaningful cultural treasures for future generations.

To Problem of Defining the Influence of Comics on Media Culture and Media Studies

The relevance of the article derives from increasing popularity of comics, which forms a certain need for qualitative research of this phenomenon. The purpose of the article is to identify the dominant research points of view on the concept of “comics” in media studies, as well as to spot out problematic aspects in the issue of evaluating the influence of comics on modern media culture and society. The research methodology can be considered as traditional for works which are devoted to the study of comics and is based on a structural-semiotic approach. The need to use this methodology is determined by the narrative specifi cs of comics, based on its semiotics, which combines verbal and non-verbal narrative elements within a single system. The study focuses on revealing the specifi c aspects of the two dominant positions regarding the defi nition of comics and spotting out problematic aspects which are common for the most studies based on these points of view. The fi rst position defi nes comics as a genre, while the second identifi es it as a narrative format. The results of the study showed that due to the key differences in the defi nition of nature of comics, existing points of view assess the impact of the comics on culture and society differently. The position which defi nes comics as a genre mainly concentrates on the social aspects of comics as a cultural phenomenon, without taking into account aspects related to the narrative specifi cs and the form of this phenomenon. Meanwhile the point of view which considers comics as a narrative format, on the contrary, shifts the focus of attention towards the linguistic aspects of comic books without taking into consideration its social and cultural characteristics. Despite the fact that each of the defi ned positions is applicable to a specifi c fi eld of knowledge, these gaps in modern studies do not allow to formulate comprehensive defi nition for comics and properly assess its impact on society and culture. Educational Comics Based-Local Folktales and Its Effects on Reading Literacy of Rural Primary School Students

Reading is a basic literacy that plays an important role in the intellectual development of students. Based on various surveys, it was identified that the reading competence of Indonesian students was very low. The research aims was to implement educative comics based on local folktale and examine its effect on increasing reading literacy of in rural rural primary school students. The research is a quasi-experimental design with pre-test-post-test non-equivalent control group design. The participants were 3rd grade elementary school students in rural Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Sampling was done by purposive sampling and cluster random sampling technique. There were 58 students in the experimental group and 56 students in the control group from 2 different elementary schools, but their qualifications were both in the good category. In learning to read, the experimental group used educational comic books containing local folktales while the control group used texts containing local folktale. Reading literacy competency data was obtained through paper and pencil tests. The data obtained were analysed descriptively and inferentially using t-test. The results of the study prove that there is a significant effect of educational comics based on local folktale on students' reading literacy competence. Local folktale supported by images is suspected to facilitate the availability of context so that the substance of the text is easier to understand. Therefore, teachers are advised to use image support in learning to cover learning losses due to the pandemic, especially in rural schools which experience many obstacles in distance learning.

PENGEMBANGAN MEDIA BUKU CERITA BERGAMBAR BERBASIS AUGMENTED REALITY MATERI FABEL SISWA KELAS 2

The research aims to develop an augmented reality-based comic book environment to improve literacy in elementary school students. This research used the ADDIE development model and was conducted on 22 grade 2 students at SDN Sumberingin 04. Data collection techniques used include observation, questionnaires and documentation. Data analysis includes analysis of validity, effectiveness and media attractiveness. The validation results illustrate that the augmented reality-based picture storybook media is very valid, with a percentage of 89.5% for media expert validation, 91% for material expert validation, and 90% for language expert validation. In the effectiveness test, the teacher's response showed a percentage of 100%, which means it was very effective. Meanwhile, the attractiveness test through student responses also showed a percentage of 100%, which is included in the very attractive category. The reliability of student responses was calculated using SPSS with a Cronbach alpha value of 0.773. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that the augmented reality-based picture story book media developed is suitable for use as a learning medium to increase the desire for reading literacy in elementary school students. It is hoped that this media development will be able to provide positive assistance in efforts to improve the quality of learning and students' literacy skills.

From superhero to Super Sikh: (re)constructing Sikh identity in Super Sikh comics

ABSTRACT Superhero comics established their distinctive literary conventions and narrative patterns which have been further widely adapted to create new superhero characters in different cultural contexts. Although superhero comic books have been extensively read across cultures, the Sikh community has recently discovered their pedagogical potential in disseminating the Sikh theological values and cultural ethos to Sikh children, and familiarising the western public with Sikh history and traditions. This paper analyses how superhero traditions are appropriated to create a Khalsa template of the Sikh superhero, Super Sikh, and the distinctiveness of Khalsa Sikh identity is highlighted and differentiated from the Muslim identity to address the issue of ‘mistaken identity’ hate crimes in the aftermath of 9/11.

COMICS AS A MEANS OF PRESERVING CLASSICAL LITERATURE IN MODERN PEOPLE’S READING (The case of W. Shakespeare)

The article focuses on adaptations of the tragedy “Hamlet” and the comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by W. Shakespeare in the form of comic books. The object of study is the peculiarities of comics as a text in demand by the representatives of clip consciousness, which is formed under the influence of the IT. The subject of study is the peculiarities of the source text transformation in comic adaptations of the 20th–21st centuries. The study is based on two adaptations of “Hamlet” and three adaptations of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by W. Shakespeare. The tasks of the study were as follows: to determine the connection between the comic book genre and clip consciousness; to highlight the characteristic features of the comics genre; to analyse the reflection of genre features in concrete texts; to describe changes in the source text depending on the nature of the audience. The study showed that the popularity of comics as a genre is inextricably linked with the emergence of clip consciousness. Certain features of the comics genre correlate with those of clip consciousness: fragmentation corresponds to mastering information in small portions, the emphasis on the visual presentation of information is associated with the perception of the world through visual images.

The background of the problem in this research is the quality and understanding of the hadith about performing ablution after consuming processed food. The aim of this research is to determine the quality and understanding of the hadith. This is a qualitative research conducted through library research method, using the takhrij hadith approach with contextual approach. The hadiths are then evaluated to determine their quality. The understanding of these hadiths is then extracted from various books of Hadith commentary. Furthermore, the hadiths are interpreted using a contextual approach by understanding the context, situation, and purpose of the Prophet's hadith. The result of this research is that the hadith about performing ablution after consuming processed food is considered authentic (sahih) in terms of quality, but there are differences in its sources, some are marfu' (directly attributed to the Prophet) and some are mauquf (attributed to a companion). In understanding the hadith about performing ablution after consuming processed food, according to the scholars of Salaf, eating something that has been touched by fire does not nullify ablution, while another group believes that it is obligatory to perform ablution according to sharia because of touching something that has been touched by fire. The hadith that explains this command is to be understood as a sunnah (recommended) and not as an obligation.

Co-creating a climate comic book: reflections on using comics in intergenerational research and engagement

The places where people live, work and spend leisure time are essential to their health and wellbeing. However, with climate change, these environments are changing. It is paramount that we understand older and younger people’s climate change perspectives, behaviours and visions for the future so that the places that matter to them can be shaped and managed effectively for health, wellbeing and sustainability. This article presents the case for using comic books to explore climate change with diverse intergenerational groups. The bilingual (Welsh/English) Climate Comic was created in South Wales, UK, as part of the ‘Understanding Older and Younger People’s PerspecTives and Imaginaries of Climate Change’ (OPTIC) project. From February to May 2023, 65 older and younger people took part in structured workshops where we used creative methods (games, collaging, comic creation, mobile and online interviews, storyboarding) to elicit intergenerational conversation, articulate intangible values and explore change. Workshops were audio-recorded, and stories were developed into a comic by illustrator Laura Sorvala. We also used comics as part of wider engagement and to stimulate ideas in a design sprint with interested groups. We discuss why comics are suited to exploring climate change with older and younger people, and the process we used to create the Climate Comic. We then reflect on the affordances and limitations of our approach and make recommendations for future research in this area. We hope that this work will stimulate others to consider using this adaptable and engaging art form for further research and engagement with younger and older people.

Sequentialized Samson: Five postwar (1949–1956) comic retellings of the Judges’’ tale

This essay examines comic book adaptations of the biblical story of Samson within the socio-political context of post-World War II and Cold War America. Challenging the notion that religious narratives in comics are inherently conservative, this study employs a history of interpretation approach to analyze five different adaptations, each illuminating the era’s complex cultural landscape. Themes such as distrust, binary morality, the value of duty over individualism, defiant autonomy, and nuanced masculinity are explored, revealing how these comics were not merely religious retellings but cultural artifacts shaped by the broader societal concerns of the late 1940s and 1950s. The paper argues that comic creators were acutely influenced by Cold War-era ideologies and anxieties, thus adapting the Samson narrative to address contemporary challenges. The essay contributes to the understanding of comics as both interpretive tools for ancient narratives and reflective historical documents of postwar America.

Aplicação de uma sequência didática com história em quadrinhos para o desenvolvimento de competências socioemocionais

This article aims to present the results of a didactic sequence implementation that sought to analyze how the use of educational technology and comic books can contribute to the development of socio-emotional skills required by the job market. The development of the didactic sequence included workshops aimed at understanding comic books and the production of an online magazine with the objective of developing socio-emotional skills. This research adopts a qualitative methodological approach, characterized as exploratory and action research. The analysis results highlighted the relevance of educational technology as a pedagogical resource, the pedagogical potential of comic books, and how the workshops conducted for the production of the online magazine facilitated the development of socio-emotional skills. The research provided students with the opportunity to develop socio-emotional skills, thus contributing to the studies of Brazilian Technical and Vocational Education and Training. Based on the participants' responses, it was possible to identify some important factors: contributions from leadership to improve school management and contributions from the association between leadership and school management to improving teaching in TVET.

Metafiction, intertextuality, and consumerism in transmedia resemiotization: a postmodern analysis of a comic book adaptation of the Chinese classic Journey to the West

Abstract Classic Chinese novels have frequently been adapted into other media formats. Such transmedia adaptations involve shifts in meaning, which are often shaped by contemporary postmodern culture. This article explores the textual transformations in a comic book adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, and the postmodern culture behind these transformations. Viewing transmedia adaptation as resemiotization, we analyse the metafictional strategies, intertextuality, and representation of consumerism in the comic book. These three aspects, which subvert the narrative of the original novel, define the postmodern nature of the comic book adaptation. We conclude that the comic book adaptation is not only a nostalgic representation but also a critical rewriting of the Chinese classic, which is shaped by postmodern norms and values. This study enriches our understanding of the adaptation and reception of the classical novel Journey to the West in contemporary popular culture, thus shedding light on the postmodern rewriting of Chinese classics in general.

Репрезентация политических идей в современных западных кинокомиксах

The article offers a view at modern Western comics-based movies as an element of mass political communication. Using the methodology of studying political languages and social fields, artistic features of the comic book film are examined, allowing politically charged messages to be conveyed in this genre. The main formats within which a comic book film becomes a conductor of political views of its authors and sponsors are identified. The study identified two main approaches to the politicization of the comic book film: by including political metaphors directly into the plot and through the implementation of a “production manifesto” during the creation and promotion of the comic book film as a creative product. Using the example of the highest-grossing films of the genre from 2017–2022, the main themes and intentions that touch upon political issues in modern Western comics films have been identified. The narrative and expressive tools used to form assessments and attitudes regarding political ideas, processes and phenomena through metaphors and allegories in the repertoire of comic book films are systematized.

Gender and terror tangled in the weeds: Poison Ivy between eco-feminism and eco-terrorism

ABSTRACT Eco-Terrorist. Femme fatale. Botanist. Environmentalist. Scientist. Villain. DC’s Poison Ivy has been challenging ideas about human interactions with the planet since 1966. Exploring alternative portrayals of femininity, power and plant liberation, Ivy sits at a unique intersection between female and plant empowerment – which is complicated by her criminal activities. By examining recently published comic book stories of Poison Ivy in conjunction with academic feminist and terrorism theory, this paper investigates how these two ideas intertwine. Ivy’s approach to the environment and her engagement with nature are inextricably linked to violence in the form of eco-terrorism, and this paper unpacks the extent to which this calls into question her portrayal as a plant-empowered female protagonist. In this way, the article explores ideas of identity and autonomy at the crossroads of feminism and botany through alternative representations of eco-feminism, but also reveals a number of provocative tensions at this very intersection.

“Superman embodies what all of us wish we could do to make the world a better place”: An Interview with Laura Siegel Larson

ABSTRACT In October 2023, as part of the Superman’s Cleveland series of events celebrating 85 years of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s creations, I sat down at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Laura Siegel Larson, the daughter of Jerry and Joanne Siegel. Siegel Larson shared stories about the birth of Superman and Lois Lane, and reflected on their legacy today. She offered insights into the early days of Siegel and Shuster’s working process and efforts to get the iconic character published in a young comic book industry. In addition to her family history, which is intimately intertwined with that of Superman, Siegel Larson also shared her own personal feelings about Superman and Lois, the many actors who have played them on television and film, and the future of the characters.
