Data are a compilation of the literature. For each environmental factor a reference condition was chosen (indicated by arrows), and all data from different species were normalized to that condition. For more information see Appendix A5. The shaded area indicates the interquartile range (between the 25th and the 75th percentile) of the observed ratios in that part of the response curve. The bold continuous line within the shaded area indicates the median value. Dashed lines indicate the median value for a specific subgroup of species and are labelled in the graph. Generally, species were classified with respect to their original habitat to grow at high, intermediate or low levels of the environmental factor studied. The total number of observations present in each part of the response curve is indicated at the top of each graph. The y-axis is logarithmic to correct for the fact that ratios are logarithmic by nature. We apologize to our readers for this mistake.
