The role of hyperbranched polyesters in acrylamide‐based polymers as thickening agents in aqueous solutions

AbstractAcrylamide polymers are typically used in industrial and healthcare sectors as thickening agents; however, their thickening capabilities rely mainly in their molecular mass. A versatile and simple strategy to improve their performance is the copolymerization with specific monomers or their chemical modification with structures like dendritic or hyperbranched molecules. This study introduces a novel acrylamide‐acrylic acid polymer grafted with minor proportions (≤4.0 wt%) of Boltorn H30, a hyperbranched polyester monomer. The incorporation of Boltorn H30 aims to exploit the hyperbranched architecture's impact on the viscosity and rheological behavior of polymer solutions. Polymers with 0.4 and 4.0 polyester wt% characterized by several analytical techniques displayed improved viscosity in aqueous solution compared against the parent poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid). Results revealed that while the molecular mass distribution changed between 20% and 94%, the thickening capabilities significantly improved with increments of 2.7 and 3.8 times compared to that of the original polymers. These findings demonstrate that even with a minimal incorporation of hyperbranched polyesters, the abundance of hydroxyl groups fosters extensive hydrogen bonding, resulting in enhanced viscosity properties of the polymer.

Asymmetry in Polymer-Solvent Interactions Yields Complex Thermoresponsive Behavior.

We introduce a lattice framework that incorporates elements of Flory-Huggins solution theory and the q-state Potts model to study the phase behavior of polymer solutions and single-chain conformational characteristics. Without empirically introducing temperature-dependent interaction parameters, standard Flory-Huggins theory describes systems that are either homogeneous across temperatures or exhibit upper critical solution temperatures. The proposed Flory-Huggins-Potts framework extends these capabilities by predicting lower critical solution temperatures, miscibility loops, and hourglass-shaped spinodal curves. We particularly show that including orientation-dependent interactions, specifically between monomer segments and solvent particles, is alone sufficient to observe such phase behavior. Signatures of emergent phase behavior are found in single-chain Monte Carlo simulations, which display heating- and cooling-induced coil-globule transitions linked to energy fluctuations. The framework also capably describes a range of experimental systems. Importantly, and by contrast to many prior theoretical approaches, the framework does not employ any temperature- or composition-dependent parameters. This work provides new insights regarding the microscopic physics that underpin complex thermoresponsive behavior in polymers.

Interplay between self-assembly and phase separation in a polymer-complex model.

We present a theoretical model for predicting the phase behavior of polymer solutions in which phase separation competes with oligomerization. Specifically, we consider scenarios in which the assembly of polymer chains into stoichiometric complexes prevents the chains from phase-separating via attractive polymer-polymer interactions. Combining statistical associating fluid theory with a two-state description of self-assembly, we find that this model exhibits rich phase behavior, including reentrance, and we show how system-specific phase diagrams can be derived graphically. Importantly, we discuss why these phase diagrams can resemble-and yet are qualitatively distinct from-phase diagrams of polymer solutions with lower critical solution temperatures.

Linking surface tension to water polarization with a new hypothesis: The Ling-Damodaran Isotherm.

Studying aqueous solutions of complex (bio)polymers is essential from both theoretical and practical perspectives. To understand the principles that govern the properties of these solutions is pivotal for the study of biological processes, considering that the most distinguished components of the cells are polymers (proteins, nucleic acids). These macromolecular aqueous systems, known as colloids, has raise the interest of scientists in recent years. It is known that several physicochemical properties deviate from ideal behaviour in this kind of solutions and that the physical state of water is different compared to its pure state. Particularly, the surface tension of such mixtures often shows a peculiar profile at semi-dilute and concentrated conditions. Here, we joined the colloidal concept of water polarization (proposed in the Association-Induction Hypothesis) with Damodaran's formalism for surface tension to theoretically derive a compelling mathematical model that explains the behaviour of polymer solutions. We measured the surface tension and osmolarity of different polyethylene oxide solutions and we used the ACDAN fluorescence probe to assess the water dipolar relaxation (polarization) in these mixtures. As a proof of concept, we also studied the influence of these polymer solutions on lipid interfaces. Our isotherm model explains the experimental observations with a unifying view that correlates with other measured properties, such as osmolarity and water dipolar relaxation. This provides a link between interfacial and bulk physicochemical properties of polymer solutions, also giving a new framework for studying the interaction of colloidal systems with lipid membranes interfaces.

4-Methylumbelliferone-Functionalized Polyphosphazene and Its Assembly into Biocompatible Fluorinated Nanocoatings with Selective Antiproliferative Activity.

Advanced multifunctional biomaterials are increasingly relying on clinically dictated patterns of selectivity against various biological targets. Integration of these frequently conflicting features into a single material surface may be best achieved by combining various complementary methodologies. Herein, a drug with a broad spectrum of activity, i.e., 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU), is synthetically multimerized into water-soluble anionic macromolecules with the polyphosphazene backbone. The polymer structure, composition, and solution behavior are studied by 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy, size-exclusion chromatography, dynamic light scattering, and UV and fluorescence spectrophotometry. To take advantage of the clinically proven hemocompatibility of fluorophosphazene surfaces, the drug-bearing macromolecule was then nanoassembled onto the surface of selected substrates in an aqueous solution with fluorinated polyphosphazene of the opposite charge using the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique. Nanostructured 4-MU-functionalized fluoro-coatings exhibited a strong antiproliferative effect on vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and fibroblasts with no cytotoxicity against endothelial cells. This selectivity pattern potentially provides the opportunity for highly desirable fast tissue healing while preventing the overgrowth of VSMCs and fibrosis. Taken together with the established in vitro hemocompatibility and anticoagulant activity, 4-MU-functionalized fluoro-coatings demonstrate potential for applications as restenosis-resistant coronary stents and artificial joints.

Rapid wetting of shear-thinning fluids

By studying the spreading behavior of aqueous glycerol and polymer solutions on smooth surfaces, we found that shear-thinning solutions behave similarly to water in the initial spreading phase, while glycerol solutions show significantly slower spreading. For the glycerol solutions, an increase in glycerol concentration effectively increases the contact-line friction, resulting in increased resistance to wetting. For the polymeric solutions, however, an increase in polymer concentration does not modify contact-line friction. As a consequence, the energy dissipation at the contact line can not be controlled by varying the amount of additives for shear-thinning fluids.

Dilute polymer solutions under shear flow: Comprehensive qualitative analysis using a bead-spring chain model with a FENE-Fraenkel spring

Although the nonequilibrium behavior of polymer solutions is generally well understood, particularly in extensional flow, there remain several unanswered questions for dilute solutions in simple shear flow, and full quantitative agreement with experiments has not been achieved. For example, experimental viscosity data exhibit qualitative differences in shear-thinning exponents, the shear rate for the onset of shear-thinning, and high-shear Newtonian plateaus depending on polymer semiflexibility, contour length, and solvent quality. While polymer models are able to incorporate all of these effects through various spring force laws, bending potentials, excluded volume (EV) potentials, and hydrodynamic interaction (HI), the inclusion of each piece of physics has not been systematically matched to experimentally observed behavior. Furthermore, attempts to develop multiscale models (in the sense of representing an arbitrarily small or large polymer chain) which can make quantitative predictions are hindered by the lack of ability to fully match the results of bead-rod models, often used to represent a polymer chain at the Kuhn-step level, with bead-spring models, which take into account the entropic elasticity. In light of these difficulties, this work aims to develop a general model based on the so-called FENE-Fraenkel spring, originally formulated by Larson and co-workers [J. Chem. Phys. 124 (2006)], which can span the range from rigid rod to traditional entropic spring, as well as include a bending potential, EV, and HI. As we show, this model can reproduce, and smoothly move between, a wide range of previously observed polymer solution rheology in shear flow.

The Water-Polymer Method of Hydroperforation of Oil and Gas wells

The aim of the study is to develop an efficient, innovative method of perforating oil and gas well casing strings with a high-velocity stream of polymer solution that conserves resources and energy and meets the requirements for environ- mentally friendly hydrocarbon production. New knowledge about the dynamics of polymer solutions in the model conditions of flow through the nozzles of the hydro perforator, which form a high-velocity jet, became the main scientific basis for substantiating the water-polymer method of hydro perforation of oil and gas wells. The study of the reaction of polymer solutions to tension hydrodynamic influence allowed to formulate a structural concept, the "common denominator" of which is the strong deformation effect of tension hydrodynamic field on high molecular weight coils, which, according to nonequilibrium thermodynamics, should cause a kind of high elasticity. Peculiarities of hydrodynamic behavior of aqueous polymer solutions in model conditions of flow through jet-forming nozzles are studied. The possibility of transition to a highly developed state of the tangle of polyethylene oxide macromolecules in the conditions of the inlet section of the nozzle of the hydro perforator has been experimentally proved. The mechanism of perforation of oil and gas wells by a high-velocity jet of an aqueous polymer solution has been elucidated. It is proved that the mechanism of the high cutting ability of the high-velocity jet of aqueous polymer solution is the destructive effect of the dynamic pressure of water-polymer jet "reinforced" by highly developed macromolecular chains in the inlet nozzles of the hydro perforator nozzles under the action of tensile leakage. Experimental and industrial testing of the method of perforation of wells by a high-speed jet of an aqueous solution of polyethylene oxide confirmed the practical and economic feasibility of its use.

Study of radical polymerization of diallyl monomer based on allyl bromide and piperidine

Essential value in this regard acquire investigation of implementation mechanism on elementary acts of radical polymerization N-alkyl - N, N-diallylamines and their proton salts at initial extents of transformation in water and water-organic solutions. Specific cyclolinear polymerization of diallyl monomers salt allows excluding the act degraded transfer of the chain on monomer and gives the chance of receiving polymers with high molecular weight. Data of kinetic researches testify the lack of degradation inherent chain transfer. It is noted that polymerization rate decreases while adding monomer ethanol to water solution. NMR 13C-spectroscopic researches of the polymers received by radical polymerization of N, N-diallylpiperidine bromide testifies the existence in chains of macromolecules as to five - (48%), and six-membered cycles (52%) which are calculated from a ratio of intensity of signals of the corresponding carbon atoms. The combination of polymeric, surface active and electrolytic properties of the synthesized polymer leads to the new qualitative state possessing a number of specific features shown in conformational and electrochemical behavior of polymer solution. Finding these properties will cause assessment opportunities of synthesized polymer usage as cationic flocculants, coagulants, precipitators and other purposes. Therefore, as distinct from anion and nonionic flocculants, cationic flocculants show high efficiency on application of them for extraction of organic and colloidal pollution and sedimentation of the weighed particles. Besides big advantage of cationic flocculants is the absence of their corrosion action on metals.

Experimental investigation of flow diversion and dynamic retention during polymer flooding in high salinity fractured carbonates using CT imaging

The successful record of polymer flooding in improving oil production from sandstone reservoirs has encouraged the expansion of its application in carbonate reservoirs. However, the existence of natural fractures, high permeability contrast, and harsh conditions of carbonate reservoirs provide significant challenges for achieving an optimized performance of polymer flooding. It is crucial to establish an appropriate polymer that can offer an optimum flow behavior for in-depth mobility control under reservoir conditions. This study presents in-situ saturation monitoring to evaluate the mobility control effect and identify the flow diversion during polymer injection in high salinity fractured and unfractured carbonate rocks. A synthetic polymer, acrylamido tertio-butyl sulfonate (ATBS) was used and prepared in 200,000 ppm brine salinity. The flow behavior of polymer solution was investigated in bulk rheology tests followed by single-phase core flooding experiments. The flooding apparatus was coupled with a CT scanner to produce 3D images for determining the fluid saturation distribution and inaccessible pore volume (IPV) in real time. Accordingly, flow diversion across fracture-matrix system during polymer injection and the dynamic retention after brine post-flush were identified. The flow experiments showed a shear thickening behavior for the injected polymer solution in the fractured core and no degradation was noticed under in-situ conditions. Based on the fluid saturation profiles, the established flow resistance in the fracture region was prominent to induce flow diversion from the fracture into the matrix. Compared to the case in unfractured rock, the IPV in the fractured rock was approximately 2.5 times higher which was at 53% after 1 PV injection. An additional 23% of IPV was subsequently penetrated upon a continuous polymer injection for 5 PV. In post-flush stage, the fractured core retained about 87% of the injected polymer solution at 1 PV which was then minimized to 7% after 10 PV injection. The entrapped polymer in the fractured core was potentially induced by hydrodynamic retention. This work ascertained the potential of polymer flooding to effectively sweep the fractured carbonates at high salinity environment under certain circumstances for a better conformance.

Effect of nanoparticle loading and magnetic field application on the thermodynamic, optical, and rheological behavior of thermoresponsive polymer solutions.

Although processing via external stimuli is a promising technique to tune the structure and properties of polymeric materials, the impact of magnetic fields on phase transitions in thermoresponsive polymer solutions is not well-understood. As nanoparticle (NP) addition is also known to impact these thermodynamic and optical properties, synergistic effects from combining magnetic fields with NP incorporation provide a novel route for tuning material properties. Here, the thermodynamic, optical, and rheological properties of aqueous poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) solutions are examined in the presence of hydrophilic silica NPs and magnetic fields, individually and jointly, via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), magneto-turbidimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and magneto-rheology. While NPs and magnetic fields both reduce the phase separation energy barrier and lower optical transition temperatures by altering hydrogen bonding (H-bonding), infrared spectra demonstrate that the mechanism by which these changes occur is distinct. Magnetic fields primarily alter solvent polarization while NPs provide PNIPAM-NP H-bonding sites. Combining NP addition with field application uniquely alters the solution environment and results in field-dependent rheological behavior that is unseen in polymer-only solutions. These investigations provide fundamental understanding on the interplay of magnetic fields and NP addition on PNIPAM thermoresponsivity which can be harnessed for increasingly complex stimuli-responsive materials.

Cononsolvency Effect: When the Hydrogen Bonding between a Polymer and a Cosolvent Matters

Despite the fact that the observation of cononsolvency was reported as early as four decades ago, its phase-transition mechanism is still under debate. In this work, we provided a comprehensive study of the phase behaviors of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) in sulfoxide or sulfone aqueous solutions. We observed a sharp collapse transition of PNiPAAm brushes in sulfoxide but not in sulfone aqueous solutions by equilibrium measurements of in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry. We found that the hydrogen-bond formation between sulfoxide oxygens and amide hydrogens of the polymer chains plays a critical role in regulating the cononsolvency of PNiPAAm. We have extended the concept of preferential adsorption by taking into account hydrophobic interactions between cosolvent molecules, which are adsorbed on the polymer by hydrogen bonds. This can explain the experimental observations of PNiPAAm brushes in these solvent mixtures and sheds light on understanding the phase behaviors of polymer solutions where hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interaction play a critical role. Our results can also be of interest for the liquid–liquid phase separation in the living cell where the condensation of proteins bound to large biomacromolecules plays an essential role.

Phase behavior of π-conjugated polymer and non-fullerene acceptor (PTB7-Th:ITIC) solutions and blends

Phase diagrams of ternary π-bonded polymer (PTB7-Th) solutions were constructed as a function of molecular weight, temperature, and electron acceptor species (ITIC, PC61BM and PC71BM). For this purpose, the Flory–Huggins lattice theory was employed with a constant χ interaction parameter, describing a binodal, spinodal, tie line, and critical point. Then, the morphologies of the blends composed of highly disordered PTB7-Th and crystallizable ITIC were investigated by atomic force microscopy. Subsequently, the surface polarities of the PTB7-Th:ITIC thin films were examined by water contact-angle goniometer, exhibiting a transition at the composition of ~ 60 ± 10 wt.% ITIC. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction indicated the presence of ITIC’s crystallites at ≥ 70 wt.% ITIC. Hence, the PTB7-Th:ITIC system was observed to undergo a phase transition at ~ 60–70 wt.% ITIC.

Measuring the viscoelastic behavior of dilute polymer solutions using high-speed statistical particle microrheology

The viscoelastic behavior of polymer solutions is commonly measured using oscillating shear rheometry, however, the accuracy of such methods is limited by the oscillating frequency of the equipment and since the relaxation time of the dilute polymer solutions is short, this requires measurement at very high frequencies. Microrheology has been proposed to overcome this technical challenge. Yet the equipment for resolving the statistics of particle displacements in microrheology is expensive. In this work, we measured the viscoelastic behavior of Methocel solutions at various concentrations using a conventional epi-fluorescence microscope coupled to a high-speed intensified camera. Statistical Particle Tracking is used in analyzing the mean-squared displacement of the dispersive particles. Relaxation times ranging from 0.76 – 9.00 ms and viscoelastic moduli, G′ between 11.34 and 3.39 are reported for Methocel solutions of concentrations between 0.063 – 0.5%.

Characterization of Nonlinear Viscoelastic Properties of Enhanced Oil Recovery Polymer Systems Using Steady-Shear Rheometry

SummaryEnhanced oil recovery (EOR) polymer systems such as hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) solutions flowing in porous media at high fluxes were reported to cause shear-thickening, a nonlinear viscoelastic (NLVE) phenomenon. Bulk rheological studies are usually performed to characterize the viscous and viscoelastic behaviors of polymer solutions in porous media. To characterize the viscoelastic properties, oscillatory shear rheology based on linear viscoelastic (LVE) data and extensional rheology based on NLVE data have been used. Although both extensional flow and high-speed shear flow can stretch and thicken polymer solutions in a nonlinear fashion, steady-shear rheometry has been used to measure only the viscous and thinning behavior of HPAM systems. In this paper, (a) the thickening ability of HPAM polymer systems formulated with contrasting salinity and molecular weight (MW) concentration is characterized in bulk shear rheometry to analyze if the thickening in the pure shear field correlates with the thickening behavior reported in porous media and other rheometry and (b) the thickening intensity of the polymer solutions of varying salinity concentration in the bulk shear field is compared with the reported mechanical degradation effects in the literature.The shear-thickening index obtained by fitting a power-law model to thickening data in steady-shear rheograms is higher for the high-saline, high-MW low-concentration HPAM systems that have inherently higher nonlinear viscoelasticity. Furthermore, the thickening behavior observed due to salinity variation in bulk steady shear contrasts with linear oscillatory shear behavior but conforms to the thickening behavior observed in porous media and in the extensional field. This signifies that polymer-EOR researchers performing comparative studies on low-salinity and high-salinity polymer floods, and having a shear rheometer at their disposal, must look beyond linear oscillatory rheology and make use of nonlinear steady-shear rheology. There is a direct relation between the shear-thickening index of saline HPAM solutions and their mechanical degradation intensity. This paper shows that the high-speed data in steady-shear rheometry that are usually ignored in EOR literature have useful information and the notion that HPAM solutions are purely thinning in the bulk shear field needs to be reconsidered.

Semiflexible polymer solutions. II. Fluctuations and Frank elastic constants.

We study the collective elastic behavior of semiflexible polymer solutions in a nematic liquid-crystalline state using polymer field theory. Our polymer field-theoretic model of semiflexible polymer solutions is extended to include second-order fluctuation corrections to the free energy, permitting the evaluation of the Frank elastic constants based on orientational order fluctuations in the nematic state. Our exact treatment of wormlike chain statistics permits the evaluation of behavior from the nematic state, thus accurately capturing the impact of single-chain behavior on collective elastic response. Results for the Frank elastic constants are presented as a function of aligning field strength and chain length, and we explore the impact of conformation fluctuations and hairpin defects on the twist, splay, and bend moduli. Our results indicate that the twist elastic constant Ktwist is smaller than both bend and splay constants (Kbend and Ksplay, respectively) for the entire range of polymer rigidity. Splay and bend elastic constants exhibit regimes of dominance over the range of chain stiffness, where Ksplay > Kbend for flexible polymers (large-N limit) while the opposite is true for rigid polymers. Theoretical analysis also suggests the splay modulus tracks exactly to that of the end-to-end distance in the transverse direction for semiflexible polymers at intermediate to large-N. These results provide insight into the role of conformation fluctuations and hairpin defects on the collective response of polymer solutions.

Phase Behavior of Ion-Containing Polymers in Polar Solvents: Predictions from a Liquid-State Theory with Local Short-Range Interactions

The thermodynamic phase behavior of charged polymers is a crucial property underlying their role in biology and various industrial applications. A complete understanding of the phase behaviors of such polymer solutions remains challenging due to the multi-component nature of the system and the delicate interplay among various factors, including the translational entropy of each component, excluded volume interactions, chain connectivity, electrostatic interactions, and other specific interactions. In this work, the phase behavior of partially charged ion-containing polymers in polar solvents is studied by further developing a liquid-state (LS) theory with local shortrange interactions. This work is based on the LS theory developed for fully-charged polyelectrolyte solutions. Specific interactions between charged groups of the polymer and counterions, between neutral segments of the polymer, and between charged segments of the polymer are incorporated into the LS theory by an extra Helmholtz free energy from the perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT). The influence of the sequence structure of the partially charged polymer is modeled by the number of connections between bonded segments. The effects of chain length, charge fraction, counterion valency, and specific short-range interactions are explored. A computational App for salt-free polymer solutions is developed and presented, which allows easy computation of the binodal curve and critical point by specifying values for the relevant model parameters.

Thickening behavior of thermo‐associative water soluble multiblock copolymers under redox RAFT polymerization

AbstractIn this study, the synthesis of thermo‐associative water soluble multiblock copolymers is reported. A trithiocarbonate functionalized polyacrylamide (PAM) was prepared and subsequently utilized in the preparation of three series of thermo‐associative copolymers by addition of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and acrylamide (AM) until reaching a nonablock copolymer with four thermo‐associative blocks distributed into the backbone of polymer. Reactions were performed at 25 °C using a tertbutyl hydroperoxyde (TBHP) and ascorbic acid (As.Ac.) as redox initiator, and S,S′‐Bis (α,α’‐dimethyl‐α”‐acetic acid)‐trithiocarbonate (DMAT) as chain transfer agent. The targeted molecular weight (MnTheo) of PAM was maintained constant (10,000 g/mol) while the expected Mntheo of polyN‐isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) was varied from 10,000, 15,000, and 20,000 g/mol, respectively. The synthesized copolymers were characterized by infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), size exclusion chromatography (SEC) for determining the structure of materials, whereas ultraviolet (UV) analysis allowed to get access to the cloud point temperature (Tcp) of polymers. Rheological analyses were carried out for examining the effect of thermo‐responsive block on the thickening behavior of aqueous polymer solutions. These analyses were performed at different concentration from 1 to 20 wt. % varying the temperature of measurements from 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 °C. Results confirmed the influence of the size of thermo‐responsive blocks on the viscosity of these copolymers.

Nanoparticle transport within non-Newtonian fluid flow in porous media.

Control over dispersion of nanoparticles in polymer solutions through porous media is important for subsurface applications such as soil remediation and enhanced oil recovery. Dispersion is affected by the spatial heterogeneity of porous media, the non-Newtonian behavior of polymer solutions, and the Brownian motion of nanoparticles. Here, we use the Euler-Lagrangian method to simulate the flow of nanoparticles and inelastic non-Newtonian fluids (described by Meter model) in a range of porous media samples and injection rates. In one case, we use a fine mesh of more than 3 million mesh points to model nanoparticles transport in a sandstone sample. The results show that the velocity distribution of nanoparticles in the porous medium is non-Gaussian, which leads to the non-Fickian behavior of nanoparticles dispersion. Due to pore-space confinement, the long-time mean-square displacement of nanoparticles depends nonlinearly on time. Additionally, the gradient of shear stress in the pore space of the porous medium dictates the transport behavior of nanoparticles in the porous medium. Furthermore, the Brownian motion of nanoparticles increases the dispersion of nanoparticles along the longitudinal and transverse direction.

Transport of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Polymer Solutions

Bacteria often live surrounded by polymer solutions, such as in animal respiratory, gastrointestinal, and reproductive tracts. In these systems, polymer solutions are often exposed to fluid flow, and their complex rheology can affect the transport of chemical compounds and microorganisms. Recent studies have focused on the effect of polymer solutions on the motility of bacteria in the absence of fluid flow. However, flow can be a game-changer on bacterial transport, as demonstrated by the depletion of motile bacteria from the low-shear regions and trapping in the high-shear regions in simple fluids, even for flows as simple as the Poiseuille one. Despite the relevance of polymer solutions in many bacterial habitats, the effect of their complex rheology on shear-induced trapping and bacterial transport in flow has remained unexplored. Using microfluidic experiments and numerical modeling, we studied how the shear rate and the rheological behavior of Newtonian and non-Newtonian polymer solutions affect the transport of motile, wild-type Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a Poiseuille flow. Our results show that, in Newtonian solutions, an increase in viscosity reduces bacterial depletion in the low-shear regions at the microchannel center, due to a reduction in the bacterial swimming velocity. Conversely, in the non-Newtonian solution, we observed a depletion comparable to the buffer case, despite its zero-shear viscosity being two orders of magnitude higher. In both cases, bacterial swimming and polymer fluid rheology control the magnitude of bacterial depletion and its shear-rate dependence. Our observations underscore the importance of the rheological behavior of the carrier fluid in controlling bacterial transport, in particular, close to surfaces giving rise to velocity gradients, with potential consequences on surface colonization and biofilm formation in many naturally relevant microbial habitats.
