A compact design of tunable band-notched ultrawideband antenna

In this letter, a compact ultrawideband planar inverted F-L antenna with a tunable band-notched response is presented. Tuning of the rejected frequency bands is realized by loading a variable capacitor on an embedded slot of the proposed antenna structure. The antenna exhibits a wide impedance bandwidth from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz with a good impedance matching (voltage standing wave ratio ≤ 2) and tunable broad range of band-reject frequency (centre frequency from 3.2 to 6 GHz). To validate the theoretical model and design concept, the antenna prototype was fabricated and measured. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A SIMPLE AND COMPACT PLANAR ULTRA WIDEBAND ANTENNA WITH SINGLE OR DUAL BAND-NOTCHED CHARACTERISTICS

A printed monopole ultra wideband (UWB) antenna with frequency band-notched characteristics is proposed and investigated. The antenna consists of a half-disk shaped structure combined with an inverted isosceles trapezoid structure. To achieve the frequency band notched characteristics, an open-ended thin slit with a length of about one quarter guided wavelength is inserted on the radiator. Multiple slits can be employed to realize multiple frequency band notched characteristics. To validate the concept, two prototypes aredesigned, fabricated and tested. The ¯rst is a single band notched UWB antenna whereas the second is a dual band notched UWB antenna. The simulated and measured results of both antennas are presented shown a reasonable agreement between them. The results also con¯rm the proposed UWB antenna design can achieve superior dual band-notch performance at desired frequency bands. 1

Design of Two Novel Dual Band-Notched UWB Antennas

Two novel dual band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) printed monopole antennas with simple structure and small size are presented. The size of both antennas is25×25×0.8 mm3. The bandwidth of one of the proposed antenna can be from 2.7 GHz to 36.8 GHz, except the bandwidth of 3.2–3.9 GHz for WiMAX applications and 5.14–5.94 GHz for WLAN applications. The bandwidth of the other is ranging for 2.7 to 41.1 GHz, except the bandwidth of 3.2–3.9 GHz for WiMAX applications and 4.8–5.9 GHz for WLAN applications. Bandwidths of the antennas are about 512% and 455% wider than those of conventional band-notched UWB antennas, respectively. In addition, the time-domain characteristics of the two antennas are investigated to show the difference between both antennas.

DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF PLANAR ULTRA-WIDEBAND ANTENNA WITH DUAL BAND-NOTCHED FUNCTION

A novel planar ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with dual band-notched characteristics is proposed. The antenna is fabricated on a printed circuit board (PCB), having a circular monopole and arc-shaped parasitic strips on one side and a ground plane with a slot aperture on the other side. Two narrow bands at 5.15-5.35 GHz and 5.725-5.825 GHz are notched by using two arc-shaped parasitic strips on the same layer of the radiator. Compared with other band-notched UWB antennas, the proposed antenna exhibits the advantages of simple structure, compact size, simple control of each notched frequency band using separate parasitic strips, and good performance. Surface current distributions and equivalent circuit model are applied to analyze the operating principle of the proposed antenna. To validate the concept, a prototype is fabricated and tested. Both simulated and measured results confirm that the proposed antenna achieves a wide bandwidth from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz with two narrow bands notched successfully. The results of VSWR, radiation patterns and gain response are shown and discussed in detail. The antenna enables the independent control of the notched frequency bands, and the proposed method can be extended for designing planar UWB antennas with multiple band-notched characteristics and reconfigurable notched frequency.

Very Compact Printed Triple Band-Notched UWB Antenna With Quarter-Wavelength Slots

A very compact coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed ultrawideband (UWB) printed monopole antenna (PMA) with triple band-notched characteristics is presented. The antenna uses three open-ended quarter-wavelength slots to create triple band-notched characteristics in 3.3-3.7 GHz for WiMAX, 5.15-5.825 GHz for WLAN, and 7.25-7.75 GHz for downlink of X-band satellite communication systems, respectively. The open-ended quarter-wavelength slot is analyzed in detail. Surface current distributions are used to show the effect of these slots. The antenna shows broad bandwidth and good omnidirectional radiation patterns in the passband, with a very compact size of 19 × 24 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> .

A COMPACT UWB ANTENNA WITH SHARP DUAL BAND-NOTCHED CHARACTERISTICS FOR LOWER AND UPPER WLAN BAND

A compact dual band-notched Ultra-Wideband antenna with sharp band-notched characteristics and controllable notched bandwidths is presented. The antenna consists of a spade-shaped microstrip-fed Ultra-Wideband planar monopole antenna and two sets of band-notched structures. The band-notched structures are employed to generate the desired lower and upper rejection bands with good frequency selectivity and su-cient rejection bandwidths. Moreover, the bandwidth of the lower and upper rejection bands can be independently adjusted by changing the size of the band-notched structures. Finally, a UWB antenna is successfully designed with the dual notched bands for the lower WLAN band (5.15{5.35GHz) and upper WLAN band (5.725{5.825GHz). A good impedance match is obtained in 3.1{10.6GHz frequency range (jS11j i5dB). The ratios of the notched bandwidths between i5dB and i10dB in the two stop bands are greater than 0.73.

Quad band-notched UWB antenna compatible with WiMAX/INSAT/lower–upper WLAN applications

A simple design of multilayered quad band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna is presented. The antenna is compact in size, suitable for UWB applications, and exhibits quad narrow band frequency notches to suppress the interference of the nearby wireless communication systems within a UWB frequency range. The narrow band notches are realised by adding closed-loop ring resonators designed to cover the 3.3–3.7 GHz, 4.5–4.8 GHz, 5.15–5.35 GHz, and 5.725–5.825 GHz bands. The antenna has been fabricated and tested for demonstrating the desired characteristics.

Dual Band-Notched UWB Antenna based on Electromagnetic Band Gap Structures

A printed ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with dual band-notched characteristics based on electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structure is presented. To produce dual-band rejection, the microstrip feed line is placed between two pairs of EBG cells which are designed to act as stop-band filters. The final design of the antenna satisfies the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) requirement of less than 2.0 in a bandwidth spreading from 2.275 GHz to 10.835 GHz, which entirely covers UWB frequency band allocated from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. The antenna also shows dual band-notched performance at the frequency bands of 3.375 − 3.875 GHz for WiMAX and 5.325 − 6.150 GHz for WLAN, while possessing omni-directional characteristic in the whole operating frequency band. The results show good agreement between simulation and measurement.

Compact band notched ultra‐wideband antenna using the Hilbert‐curve slot

AbstractA compact band notched ultra‐wideband (UWB) antenna with the Hilbert‐curve slot (HCS) is proposed. By introducing the HCS on the UWB antenna, a compact size and the frequency notch function can be simultaneously obtained. On imprinting the HCS on the UWB antenna, the notched 5 GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) band was realized. As for the HCS implementation, we make use of the third iteration order Hilbert‐curve. Numerical simulations and measurements for the proposed antenna demonstrate that the presented methodology is accurate and efficient to design the compact band notched UWB antenna. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Planar band-notched ultra-wideband antenna with square-looped and end-coupled resonator

A square-looped and an end-coupled resonator used in a planar ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna to achieve band-notched performance are presented here. To obtain notched performance in the wireless local area network band, both the square-looped and end-coupled resonator are designed and placed in a fork-shaped UWB antenna centre. The characteristics and schematic equivalent circuit of each resonator are also discussed. Parametric studies of a fork-shaped antenna with square-looped resonator are given as an example to explore the operating mechanism. Accordingly, the band-notched antenna can effectively select target bands by adjusting different resonator structures. The proposed antenna features flat gain-frequency response and group delay as well as 10–25 dB gain suppression in the notched band.

Realization of dual band-notched function for a UWB antenna using hybrid resonators

A dual band-notched planar ultra-wideband (UWB) monopole antenna using hybrid resonators is presented in this article. By etching a complementary electric-LC resonator on the ground plane and a split ring resonator on the regular octagon radiation patch, dual band-notched characteristics are achieved. Details of the antenna design, the radiation pattern and the measured results of voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) are given. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed antenna operates over a UWB frequency range from 2.9 to 12.4 GHz for VSWR < 2 while providing dual band-stop function in the frequency bands of 3.3–3.6 and 5.2–5.8 GHz. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Band-notched ultra-wideband planar monopole antenna using shunt open-circuited stub

This article presents an ultra-wideband planar monopole antenna with band-notched characteristics.The proposed antenna consists of a sector monopole and a microstrip feedline with a quarter-wavelength open-circuited transmission line (a stub). The open-circuited stub is connected in parallel with the microstrip feedline in order to achieve band-notched performance. The measured impedance bandwidth for voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) ≤ 2 is from 3.01 to 11 GHz, except the notched band of 5.08 to 5.96 GHz for the WLAN system. This design technique is very suitable to develop other planar antennas for band-notched applications. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel band-notched ultra-wideband elliptical monopole antenna with dual radiating elements

A novel ultra-wideband design of planar elliptical monopole antenna with dual radiating elements is presented. The proposed antenna consists of two elliptical radiating elements and a ground plane. The antenna has a super-wideband from 2.8 to 15 GHz for voltage standing wave ratio less than 2, except the notched band at 4.8–5.9 GHz for filtering the wireless local area network signal. Based on the contribution of the shorting position d to the notch bandwidth, a particular notch-band range can be designed by adjusting the size of the minor elliptical radiating element. Ultrawideband Antenna With Triple Band-Notched Characteristics Using Closed-Loop Ring Resonators

The design of a simple multilayered triple band-notched ultrawideband (UWB) antenna is presented in this letter. The proposed antenna is compact in size, suitable for ultrawideband applications, and exhibits triple narrow frequency band notches to suppress the interference of the nearby wireless communication systems within a UWB frequency range. The narrow band notches are realized by adding closed-loop ring resonators designed to cover the 3.3-3.7-GHz, 5.15-5.35-GHz, and 5.725-5.825-GHz bands. The center frequencies of the band notches can be adjusted by varying the ring resonators' mean diameters. The designed antenna has a compact volume of 33 × 30 × 1.524 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</sup> . The antenna is fabricated and tested providing broadband impedance matching, appropriate gain, and stable radiation pattern.

Band-Notched Ultra-Wideband Slot Antenna with a Pair of ARC-Shaped Metallic Arms

A compact band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) circular slot antenna to prevent interference from existing wireless local area network (WLAN) systems is presented. The proposed antenna has an interior circular stub for impedance matching and a pair of arc-shaped metallic arms embedded along the circular slot edge. The desired band-notched property can be obtained by adjusting the parameters of the arc-shaped metallic arms. In particular, this paper provides both the simulated surface current and magnetic field distributions to explain how the band-notched capability works. Details of the experimental results of the constructed prototypes are discussed.

A Printed Band-Notched UWB Antenna Using Quasi-Self-Complementary Structure

A quasi-self-complementary antenna (QSCA) for band-notched ultrawideband (UWB) application free from interference with existing wireless local area network (WLAN) systems is proposed. The designed band-notched UWB operation can be obtained by choosing the size of the parasitic arc-shaped strip opposite to the quarter-circular patch. The proposed antenna has advantages of low cost, easy design and compact size. Details of the proposed design and experimental results of the constructed antennas are presented.

A Compact Band-Notched UWB Antenna with Controllable Notched Bandwidths by Using Coupled Slots

A compact coplanar waveguide fed (CPW-FED) ultrawideband (UWB) antenna with controllable notched bandwidths for WLAN bands ranging from 5.3 GHz to 5.7 GHz is proposed and implemented. The proposed antenna consists of part of a circular patch and two modified ground planes. Two upper half-wavelength C-shaped slots and another lower half-wavelength C-shaped slot are coupled separately to form a band rejection. The simulation and measurement show that the proposed antenna achieves a well-matched broadband impedance of 3.1–10.6 GHz (|S11| < –10 dB), except the rejection bandwidths of 5.3–5.7 GHz for the centre band of WLAN (|S11| > –5 dB). Moreover, the notched bandwidths can be controlled by adjusting the coupling distances of the corresponding slots. The antenna is successfully designed, simulated and measured with broadband matched impedance and near omnidirectional radiation patterns.

Ultra-wideband antenna with on/off band-notch control

This article presents a band-notched ultra-wideband antenna having a pair of stop bands.These stop bands are located in close proximity on the frequency spectrum. Each stop band is created by a resonant element that is distinctly separate from the radiating part of the antenna. For these reasons, each of the stop bands can be turned on and off independently. The article demonstrates that this could be achieved using six microwave switches. The location of the two stop bands can also be controlled independently. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Miniaturized Ultra-Wideband Elliptical Monopole Antenna with Wireless Local Area Network Band Rejection Characteristic

This article presents a new frequency band notch ultra-wideband antenna with compact dimensions. It is shown that with a modified ground plane, antenna dimensions can be reduced without affecting the antenna bandwidth. The overall size of the proposed antenna is 13 mm × 22 mm. Experimental and simulated results of the fabricated antenna are presented. The antenna impedance bandwidth covers the entire ultra-wideband bandwidth from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz except the wireless local area network band. The proposed antenna has an omni-directional radiation pattern over the desired bandwidth. Also, the antenna has a good performance in time domain.

3.5/5.5 GHz dual band-notch ultra-wideband slot antenna with compact size

A compact dual band-notch ultra-wideband polygon slot antenna with two parasitic slits is presented. The antenna is as small as 16 × 25 × 0.8 mm. The proposed antenna yields an impedance bandwidth of 3.1-10.6 GHz with VSWR < 2, except for the bandwidths of 3.33.9 GHz for WiMAX and 5-6 GHz for WLAN. The antenna has been successfully simulated, designed and measured, showing good impedance matching, stable gain and near omnidirectional radiation patterns.
