Retrieval of At-Surface Upwelling Radiance and Albedo by Parameterizing Cloud Scattering and Transmittance over Rugged Terrain

Accurate and continuous estimation of surface albedo is vital for assessing and understanding land–surface–atmosphere interactions. We developed a method for estimating instantaneous all-sky at-surface shortwave upwelling radiance and albedo over the Tibetan Plateau. The method accounts for the complex interplay of topography and atmospheric interactions and aims to mitigate the occurrence of data gaps. Employing an RTLSR-kernel-driven model, we retrieved surface shortwave albedo with a 1 km resolution, incorporating direct, isotropic diffuse; circumsolar diffuse; and surrounding terrain irradiance into the all-sky solar surface irradiance. The at-surface upwelling radiance and surface shortwave albedo estimates were in satisfactory agreement with ground observations at four stations in the Tibetan Plateau, with RMSE values of 56.5 W/m2 and 0.0422, 67.6 W/m2 and 0.0545, 98.6 W/m2 and 0.0992, and 78.0 98.6 W/m2 and 0.639. This comparison indicated an improved accuracy of at-surface upwelling radiance and surface albedo and significantly reduced data gaps. Valid observations increased substantially in comparison to the MCD43A2 data product, with the new method achieving an increase ranging from 40% to 200% at the four stations. Our study demonstrates that by integrating terrain, cloud properties, and radiative transfer modeling, the accuracy and completeness of retrieved surface albedo and radiance in complex terrains can be effectively improved.

CO2 in the atmosphere of Mars depleted in 13C

We present here vertically resolved measurements of the carbon isotopic composition of CO2 in the Martian atmosphere between the surface and 50 km of altitude. The results are based on data taken by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter with the NOMAD instrument and have been aggregated to derive an average vertical profile of 13C/12C. We find no seasonal or spatial trends with variabilities beyond the sensitivity of the measurements. For the analysis, we developed a method that allows us to estimate whether the observed variability of isotopic measurements is beyond their intrinsic accuracy, by exploiting ab-initio spectroscopy and the radiometric noise of the instrument. Applying this method to our data, we find that atmospheric CO2 is depleted in 13C compared to the Earth standard by 30‰ to 45‰, in line with previous ground-based measurements values of the atmosphere and in contrast with the average value obtained by Curiosity at the surface (46 ± 4‰). These differences in isotopic signatures of CO2 as measured across the atmosphere and near-surface pose new questions when inferring the evolution and history of carbon on Mars, and suggest that processes such as a strong atmosphere-surface interactions may be fractionating the carbon reservoirs on the planet.

Long-term species-level observations indicate the critical role of soil moisture in regulating China's grassland productivity relative to phenological and climatic factors

As a sensitive indicator of climate change and a key variable in ecosystem surface-atmosphere interaction, vegetation phenology, and the growing season length, as well as climatic factors (i.e., temperature, precipitation, and sunshine duration) are widely recognized as key factors influencing vegetation productivity. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of soil moisture in regulating grassland productivity. However, the relative importance of phenology, climatic factors, and soil moisture to plant species-level productivity across China's grasslands remains poorly understood. Here, we use nearly four decades (1981 to 2018) of in situ species-level observations from 17 stations distributed across grasslands in China to examine the key mechanisms that control grassland productivity. The results reveal that soil moisture is the strongest determinant of the interannual variability in grassland productivity. In contrast, the spring/autumn phenology, the length of vegetation growing season, and climate factors have relatively minor impacts. Generally, annual aboveground biomass increases by 3.9 to 25.3 g∙m2 (dry weight) with a 1 % increase in growing season mean soil moisture across the stations. Specifically, the sensitivity of productivity to moisture in wetter and colder environments (e.g., alpine meadows) is significantly higher than that in drier and warmer environments (e.g., temperate desert steppes). In contrast, the sensitivity to the precipitation of the latter is greater than the former. The effect of soil moisture is the most pronounced during summer. Dominant herb productivity is more sensitive to soil moisture than the others. Moreover, multivariate regression analyses show that the primary climatic factors and their attributions to variations in soil moisture differ among the stations, indicating the interaction between climate and soil moisture is very complex. Our study highlights the interspecific difference in the soil moisture dependence of grassland productivity and provides guidance to climate change impact assessments in grassland ecosystems.

Impact of Deforestation on Regional Climate Patterns in Japan

Purpose: To aim of the study was to analyze impact of deforestation on regional climate patterns. Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: Research on the impact of deforestation in Japan reveals significant alterations in regional climate patterns. Deforested areas experience changes in precipitation, often leading to decreased rainfall and potential drought conditions. Additionally, deforestation contributes to higher temperatures, exacerbating the urban heat island effect and altering local weather dynamics. Modifications in atmospheric circulation patterns further compound these effects, potentially increasing the frequency of extreme weather events. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Theory of land surface-atmosphere interaction, bio geophysical feedback hypothesis & theory of atmospheric circulation changes may be used to anchor future studies on impact of deforestation on regional climate patterns. Implement sustainable land management practices and reforestation initiatives to mitigate the adverse effects of deforestation on regional climate patterns. Enact and enforce policies that promote sustainable forestry practices, including forest protection, sustainable logging, and forest restoration measures.

Modeling Land–Atmosphere Interactions over Semiarid Plains in Morocco: In-Depth Assessment of GCM Stretched-Grid Simulations Using In Situ Data

Abstract Land surface–atmosphere interactions are a key component of climate modeling. They are particularly critical to understand and anticipate the climate and the water resources over the semiarid and arid North African regions. This study uses in situ observations to assess the ability of the IPSL-CM global climate model to simulate the land–atmosphere interactions over the Moroccan semiarid plains. A specific configuration with a grid refinement over the Haouz Plain, near Marrakech, and nudging outside Morocco has been performed to properly assess the model’s performances. To ensure reliable model–observation comparisons despite the fact that station measurements are not representative of a mesh-size area, we carried out experiments with adapted vegetation properties. Results show that the CMIP6 version of the model’s physics represents the near-surface climate over the Haouz Plain reasonably well. Nonetheless, the simulation exhibits a nocturnal warm bias, and the wind speed is overestimated in tree-covered meshes and underestimated in the wheat-covered region. Further sensitivity experiments reveal that LAI-dependent parameterization of roughness length leads to a strong surface wind drag and to underestimated land surface atmosphere thermal coupling. Setting the roughness heights to the observed values improves the wind speed and, to a lesser extent, the nocturnal temperature. A low bias in latent heat flux and soil moisture coinciding with a pronounced diurnal warm bias at the surface is still present in our simulations. Including a first-order irrigation parameterization yields more realistic simulated evapotranspiration flux and daytime skin surface temperatures. This result raises the importance of accounting for the irrigation process in present and future climate simulations over Moroccan agricultural areas.

Scientific Instrumentation Complex for the ExoMars-2022 Landing Platform

Scientific objectives, instruments, and measurement program of the scientific instrumentation of the Kazachok stationary landing platform of the State Corporation Roscosmos and the European Space Agency (ESA) ExoMars-2022 project are presented. The scientific objectives of research on the landing platform included the long-term climate monitoring, the studies of the atmospheric composition, the mechanisms for dust lifting and related electrical phenomena, atmosphere–surface interactions, the subsurface water abundance, monitoring the radiation situation, and the study of Mars internal structure. To address these problems, 11 Russian and two European instruments with a total mass of 45 kg were built, tested and integrated into the spacecraft. These include a television camera system, meteorological complexes, a suite for studying dust and related electrical phenomena, optical spectrometers and an analytical complex for studying the atmospheric composition, a microwave radiometer, the neutron and gamma spectrometers for surface research, a seismometer, magnetometers and a Mars proper motion experiment to study its internal structure. Although the ExoMars-2022 project has been discontinued, the scientific objectives of the landing platform have not lost their relevance, and the technical solutions and developments implemented in scientific equipment are of interest and promising for further Mars exploration.

Constraints on the evolution of the Triton atmosphere from occultations: 1989–2022

Context. In about 2000, the south pole of Triton experienced an extreme summer solstice that occurs every ∼650 years, when the subsolar latitude reached about 50°S. Bracketing this epoch, a few occultations probed the Triton atmosphere in 1989, 1995, 1997, 2008, and 2017. A recent ground-based stellar occultation observed on 6 October 2022 provides a new measurement of the atmospheric pressure on Triton. This is presented here. Aims. The goal is to constrain the volatile transport models (VTMs) of the Triton atmosphere. The atmosphere is basically in vapor pressure equilibrium with the nitrogen ice at its surface. Methods. Fits to the occultation light curves yield the atmospheric pressure of Triton at the reference radius 1400 km, from which the surface pressure is deduced. Results. The fits provide a pressure p1400 = 1.211 ± 0.039 μbar at radius 1400 km (47 km altitude), from which a surface pressure of psurf = 14.54 ± 0.47 μbar is deduced (1σ error bars). To within the error bars, this is identical to the pressure derived from the previous occultation of 5 October 2017, p1400 = 1.18 ± 0.03 μbar and psurf = 14.1 ± 0.4 μbar, respectively. Based on recent models of the volatile cycles of Triton, the overall evolution of the surface pressure over the last 30 years is consistent with N2 condensation taking place in the northern hemisphere. However, models typically predict a steady decrease in the surface pressure for the period 2005-2060, which is not confirmed by this observation. Complex surface-atmosphere interactions, such as ice albedo runaway and formation of local N2 frosts in the equatorial regions of Triton, could explain the relatively constant pressure between 2017 and 2022.

Chemical and mechanical analysis of hard coatings exposed under the supercritical CO2 Venus atmospheric surface conditions

The extremely hot and dense environment on Venusian surface will degrade almost any material via atmosphere-surface interactions, therefore the exploitation of its soil and atmosphere is very challenging. Exploring rovers are designed with mostly mechanical parts, and the knowledge of the effect of Venusian exposure on mechanical and tribological systems is very important for the longevity of the missions. Herein, we studied the effect of 3-day Venusian exposure on selected interfaces. It was found that diamond-like carbon (DLC) and Ti-doped molybdenum disulfide (TiMoS2) experienced negligible morphological changes, whereas polycrystalline diamond (PCD) and PS400 (plasma sprayed Ni-alloy) formed few-microns thick sulfur-containing reacted surface layers after exposure. Also, PCD retained its structural integrity, while the mechanical properties of DLC deteriorated the most, manifested as 49% decrease in hardness. The hardness of PS400 and TiMoS2 degraded to a lesser degree, with 8 and 26% decrease, respectively. The above coatings could be candidate materials to coat structural and bearing systems in the rovers, probes, and drills for future missions to Venus.

Different management strategies exert distinct influences on microclimate of soil and canopy in tea fields through surface-atmosphere interactions

Agricultural management strategies are crucial in regulating the soil-atmosphere interaction. The crop landscape is influenced by farmers through different field practices, and further impacts the variations of soil temperature, soil moisture, and field microclimate. To examine how different management strategies affect the dynamics of canopy and soil parameters (canopy temperature, soil temperature and soil moisture) and the aforementioned interaction, two observation systems were installed in an organic-certified (ORG) tea field and a conventional (CONV) tea field in northern Taiwan. Due to the application of different field practices, the leaf area in ORG is higher. The results show that the diurnal range of canopy temperature in CONV was larger than that in ORG (7.52 °C vs 5.97 °C). However, the daily loss rate of soil water content in ORG was two times faster than that in CONV (0.97% d−1 vs. 0.45% d−1). The outcomes imply that the organic practices in this study lead to higher evapotranspiration and milder variation in temperature on the canopy scale. These findings suggest that the application of organic practice could help to mitigate the changes of microclimate in tea field. In addition, the adoption of appropriate management strategies could assist farmers in adapting to environmental fluctuations and provide quantitative references of microclimate in tea field under different agricultural applications and climatic conditions.

Interannual land cover and vegetation variability based on remote sensing data in the HTESSEL land surface model: implementation and effects on simulated water dynamics

Abstract. Vegetation largely controls land surface–atmosphere interactions. Although vegetation is highly dynamic across spatial and temporal scales, most land surface models currently used for reanalyses and near-term climate predictions do not adequately represent these dynamics. This causes deficiencies in the variability of modeled water and energy states and fluxes from the land surface. In this study we evaluated the effects of integrating spatially and temporally varying land cover and vegetation characteristics derived from satellite observations on modeled evaporation and soil moisture in the Hydrology Tiled ECMWF Scheme for Surface Exchanges over Land (HTESSEL) land surface model. Specifically, we integrated interannually varying land cover from the European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative and interannually varying leaf area index (LAI) from the Copernicus Global Land Services (CGLS). Additionally, satellite data on the fraction of green vegetation cover (FCover) from CGLS were used to formulate and integrate a spatially and temporally varying effective vegetation cover parameterization. The effects of these three implementations on model evaporation fluxes and soil moisture were analyzed using historical offline (land-only) model experiments at the global scale, and model performances were quantified with global observational products of evaporation (E) and near-surface soil moisture (SMs). The interannually varying land cover consistently altered the evaporation and soil moisture in regions with major land cover changes. The interannually varying LAI considerably improved the correlation of SMs and E with respect to the reference data, with the largest improvements in semiarid regions with predominantly low vegetation during the dry season. These improvements are related to the activation of soil moisture–evaporation feedbacks during vegetation-water-stressed periods with interannually varying LAI in combination with interannually varying effective vegetation cover, defined as an exponential function of LAI. The further improved effective vegetation cover parameterization consistently reduced the errors of model effective vegetation cover, and it regionally improved SMs and E. Overall, our study demonstrated that the enhanced vegetation variability consistently improved the near-surface soil moisture and evaporation variability, but the availability of reliable global observational data remains a limitation for complete understanding of the model response. To further explain the improvements found, we developed an interpretation framework for how the model development activates feedbacks between soil moisture, vegetation, and evaporation during vegetation water stress periods.

Soil surface-atmosphere interaction in a monitored embankment constructed with two compacted lime-treated soils

This study was carried out in an instrumented and monitored embankment divided into two symetrical sections and constructed with compacted treated soils (i.e., a silty soil and a clayey soil) exposed to the same atmospheric conditions in a continental climate, with oceanic influences. It aimed to investigate changes of bare soil surface moisture (w) and corresponding suction (s) as result of soil water evaporation processes on a monthly time scale. Seasonal variations in the w (and s) measurement in both soil surfaces show overall consistency with the meteorological measurement within the study area. The paper also examines the ability of four air temperature-based potential evaporation (PET) formulations to capture the process of evaporation at the site. Results indicated that soil water evaporation is controlled by both atmospheric and soil conditions. And, during the most significant drying time period, the measured s consistently increased and the corresponding w decreased suggesting a relatively significant water evaporation effect. However, the monthly predicted PET data varied from a maximum of over 120 mm/month to less than 50 mm/month during the drying time, depending on the used method. The continuously monitored soil surface suctions are used for discussing the variations of evaporation according to the predicted PET method and time period at the site.

Remotely sensed evidence of the divergent climate impacts of wind farms on croplands and grasslands

To mitigate climate change, the utilization of wind energy has rapidly expanded over the last two decades. However, when producing clean electricity, wind farms (WFs) may in turn alter the local climate by interfering in land surface-atmosphere interactions. Currently, China and the United States have the highest wind energy capacities globally. Thus, quantitatively analyzing the impacts of WFs on land surface temperature (LST) between the two countries is valuable to deeply understand the climate impact of WF. In this study, we use the moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) time series from 2001 to 2018 to reveal the impacts of 186 WFs (76 in China and 110 in the US) on local LSTs. The remote sensing observations reveal that WFs generally lead to warming impacts in both countries, with stronger effects in the US compared to China. During the daytime, WFs in the US exhibit a significant warming effect of 0.08 °C (p < 0.05), while the impact in China is nonsignificant (0.06 °C, p = 0.15). At night, the warming impacts in the US are approximately 1.7 times greater than in China (0.19 °C vs. 0.11 °C). Differences in the LST impacts between the two countries are primarily driven by cropland WFs, which cause more significant cooling effects in China (−0.34 °C in the daytime and − 0.19 °C at night, p < 0.01) compared to the US. However, these differences are not significant for grassland WFs. Moreover, the impacts of WFs on croplands' LSTs are strongly correlated with their evapotranspiration impacts, likely influenced by irrigation practices. In addition to evapotranspiration, a machine learning model suggests that background climate and terrain factors can alter the LST impacts. Our observations in the two largest WF-deployment countries provide a new understanding of the climate impacts of WFs, which should be considered in the fields of wind and renewable energy deployment.

Assessment of Spatio-Temporal Land Use/Cover Change and Its Effect on Land Surface Temperature in Lahaul and Spiti, India

Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) changes have a significant impact on Land Surface Temperature (LST). The LST is an important parameter in various environmental and climatological studies, as it plays a crucial role in understanding the Earth’s surface–atmosphere interactions. The LULC changes can modify the surface energy balance and alter the radiation budget, leading to changes in LST. Urbanization, deforestation, and agricultural land use changes are some of the primary drivers of LULC change that have a significant impact on LST. Deforestation and agricultural land use changes result in a reduction in evapotranspiration, leading to an increase in LST. The main objective of the study is to analyze the spatio-temporal change in Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) and its effect on Land Surface Temperature (LST), as well as to establish a correlation of LST with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalize Difference Snow Index (NDSI). Understanding the impact of LULC on LST is essential for developing effective land use policies that can mitigate the adverse effects of LULC change on the environment and human health.

Thermal infrared spectral characteristics of martian dust deposits and evidence for atmosphere-regolith interactions

It has been hypothesized that the dust component of the Martian surface is globally homogeneous, based on chemical similarity between landing sites and spectral similarity from select areas within bright regions. We tested that hypothesis by producing the first near-global data set of surface spectral emissivity (excluding polar regions) across the ∼233–508 and 825–1650 cm−1 (∼20–50 and 6–12 μm) spectral ranges from Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer data and using various data reduction techniques to search for any spectral heterogeneity in bright regions that might be present. We found no unequivocal evidence for spectral heterogeneity, supporting the hypothesis that dust is globally homogenized. The global emissivity product permits new spectral parameter maps and preliminary assessments of atmosphere-regolith interactions. We produced the first map of the Christiansen feature (CF) and show that, unlike on the Moon, where CF is a proxy for bulk silica content, CF position on Mars is primarily associated with dust cover. We produced an updated map of the 1630 cm−1 emissivity peak that arises from bound H2O in fine-particulate material and show that the peak is nearly ubiquitous across the Martian surface, including in dark regions with relatively low dust cover. This is attributed to minor amounts of dust disproportionally contributing to the spectral signal in the ∼1630 cm−1 region. We show that regions within the equatorial dust deposits with higher annual modeled frequency of nighttime CO2 frosts are more likely to have lower emissivity in the ∼1350-1400 cm−1 region, consistent with a higher fraction of unconsolidated dust. This provides the first spectral evidence for a previously hypothesized regolith gardening process via a diurnal CO2 cycle, representing an important surface-atmosphere interaction that may contribute to near-surface porosity and affect diffusive exchange of H2O between atmosphere and hydrated solids (ice, minerals) in the regolith.

Variation of Surface Air Temperature Induced by Enhanced Land–Atmosphere Coupling During 1981–2020 in Xinjiang, Northwest China

AbstractLand–atmosphere coupling (LAC) is a critical process in the climate system, and has great effects on surface air temperature over the humid–dry transition zones. Using ERA5/ERA5‐land reanalysis datasets, we show that the summer temperature anomalies over Northwest China (NWC), known as one of the most important LAC hotpots in China, are significantly correlated with the LAC strength during 1981–2020. The stronger the coupling strength between air temperature and land surface, the more pronounced decrease in air temperature and extreme hot days over NWC. Among the four pathways of land–air temperature coupling, including soil moisture (SM)/soil temperature–latent heat flux/sensible heat flux–air temperature coupling, SM–sensible heat flux–air temperature pathway corresponds most closely with the temperature changes in summer. By analyzing the possible local and non‐local physical links in this relationship, we show that the wave trains composed of the intensification of Ural ridge and Central–Asia trough stimulate a meridional fluctuation of westerly airflow over the mid–high latitudes of Eurasia. Large moisture, therefore, converges into NWC, leading to excessive precipitation and deficient incident solar radiation reaching the land surface. In such case, wetter and cooler soil states accelerate the cooling of the environment through feedbacks between the lands, land–atmosphere exchanging fluxes and air temperature locally, accompanied by a significant enhancement in LAC strength. Our study provides insight into the physical processes causing variations in summer temperature over a typical LAC hotspot and suggests that the role of land surface–atmosphere interactions needs to be considered when studying temperature extremes under climate change.

High-Temperature Oxidation of Magnesium- and Iron-Rich Olivine under a CO2 Atmosphere: Implications for Venus

Understanding crust–atmosphere interactions on Venus is fundamentally important to interpretations of Venus’ surface spectroscopic data. Olivine, in basaltic crust, is oxidized under a heated CO2 atmosphere. However, the oxidation rates, product assemblages and spectral characteristics of olivine samples with different Fa# values remain largely unclear. Herein, we investigated the oxidation of olivine with different Fa# values (Fa09, Fa29 and Fa71) under CO2 atmosphere at 470 °C and 900 °C and characterized the oxidation products (both microscopically and macroscopically), conversion rates and VNIR spectra. The results showed that the oxidation of olivine produced magnesioferrite, magnetite, laihunite, hematite and maghemite at 470 °C and hematite, magnetite, magnesioferrite and amorphous SiO2 at 900 °C. Both high temperature and high Fa# values accelerated the oxidation rates. The production of oxide coatings on olivine grains (74 μm in size) was estimated to be completed within tens to hundreds of years at 470 °C in natural settings, with even shorter periods under higher temperatures. Thus, CO2 oxidation would quickly eliminate olivine spectral characteristics, and spectral parameters at 850 and 1020 nm, as well as other relevant spectral windows (considering shifts induced by the elevated temperature), could be used to trace olivine oxidation processes. This work presented a case study connecting microscopic features to spectral characteristics for Venus’ surface–atmosphere interactions. Further studies considering more realistic Venus’ surface–atmosphere conditions will be essential to better interpret the measured spectroscopic data and determine the origins of the high emissivity detected on elevated terrain on Venus.

How does the explicit treatment of convection alter the precipitation–soil hydrology interaction in the mid-Holocene African humid period?

Abstract. Global climate models with coarse horizontal resolution are largely unable to reproduce the monsoonal precipitation pattern over North Africa during the mid-Holocene. Here we present the first regional, storm-resolving simulations with an idealized but reasonable mid-Holocene vegetation cover. In these simulations, the West African monsoon expands farther north by about 4–5∘, and the precipitation gradient between the Guinea coast and the Sahara decreases compared to simulations with a barren Sahara as it is today. The northward shift of monsoonal precipitation is caused by land surface–atmosphere interaction, i.e., the coupling of soil moisture and precipitation, as well as interactions of the land surface with the large-scale monsoon circulation (e.g., the African easterly jet). The response of the monsoon circulation to an increased vegetation cover is qualitatively similar but more pronounced in parameterized convection simulations. We attribute the differences in monsoonal precipitation to differences in soil moisture that are strongly controlled by runoff and precipitation characteristics. If precipitation is intense and falls over a spatially small region, as in our storm-resolving simulations, about 35 % of all precipitation water goes into runoff instead of filling soil moisture storage. In contrast, in light and spatially more homogeneous precipitation, as produced in our parameterized convection simulations, only some 20 % leaves the grid cell as runoff. Therefore, much more water is available to maintain high soil moisture content. We confirm the significant role of soil moisture and runoff by performing simulations with the same constant soil moisture field in both storm-resolving and parameterized convection simulations. These constant soil moisture simulations cancel the effect of lower soil moisture on the land–atmosphere feedback cycle in our storm-resolving simulations. We show that precipitation strongly increases in the storm-resolving simulations, especially in moisture-controlled regions, such as the northern Sahel and Sahara, and reaches equally high values as in parameterized convection simulations. Our study highlights how the type of rainfall (e.g., local and intense or widespread and light) impacts soil moisture and thus land–atmosphere feedbacks. This is contrary to many studies that focus mainly on the amount of rainfall and how it modifies land–atmosphere feedbacks. Moreover, this study suggests that comprehensive land-surface schemes, which appropriately respond to varying precipitation characteristics, are needed for studying land surface–atmosphere interaction.

Concurrence of blowing snow and polynya enhances arctic surface–atmosphere interaction: a modeling study with an extreme wind event in 2018

Snow, a critical element influencing surface energy/mass balance of the Arctic, can also drift in the air to complicate the surface–atmosphere interaction. This complexity can be further enhanced when the surface includes polynya. These processes, however, have not been well studied and are often unrepresented in climate and weather models. We address this by applying a snow/ice-enhanced version of the Weather Research and Forecasting model to examine the impacts of blowing snow and polynya on the surface–atmosphere interaction during an extreme Arctic wind event in February 2018, when an unprecedented polynya occurred off the north coast of Greenland. The results indicate that blowing snow and the polynya contribute opposite signs to the changes of surface sensible/latent heat fluxes, but both cause enhanced downwelling longwave radiation. Process analysis shows that the thermodynamic moistening/cooling effects due to the blowing snow sublimation are amplified by increased surface winds, reduced temperature inversion, and upward wind anomaly associated with the polynya. Enhanced surface–atmosphere interaction over a polynya due to blowing snow sublimation can potentially sustain the continuing development of the polynya.

Spatial and temporal variations of grassland vegetation on the Mongolian Plateau and its response to climate change

The Mongolian Plateau is an arid and semi-arid region with grassland as its main vegetation. It has a fragile ecosystem and is a sensitive area for global warming. The study is based on MODIS NDVI data and growth season meteorological data from 2000 to 2018, this study examined the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of grassland vegetation on the Mongolian Plateau during the growing season using trend analysis, partial correlation analysis, and residual analysis, and it explores the dual response of NDVI changes to climate and human activities. The study’s findings demonstrated that the growing season average NDVI of grassland vegetation on the plateau gradually increased from southwest to northeast during the growing season; the growing season average NDVI demonstrated a significant overall increase of 0.023/10a (p &amp;lt; 0.05) from 2000 to 2018, with an increase rate of 0.030/10a in Inner Mongolia and 0.019/10a in Mongolia; the area showing a significant increase in NDVI during the growing season accounted for 91.36% of the entire study area. In Mongolian Plateau grasslands during the growing season of 2000–2018, precipitation and downward surface shortwave radiation grew significantly at rates of 34.83mm/10a and 0.57 W/m2/10a, respectively, while average air temperature decreased slightly at a rate of −0.018°C/10a. Changes in meteorological factors of grassland vegetation varied by region as well, with Inner Mongolia seeing higher rates of precipitation, lower rates of average air temperature, and lower rates of downward surface shortwave radiation than Mongolia. On the Mongolian Plateau, the NDVI of grassland vegetation in the growing season showed a significant positive correlation with precipitation (0.31) and a significant negative correlation with average air temperature (−0.09) and downward surface shortwave radiation (−0.19), indicating that increased in NDVI was driven by an increase in precipitation paired with a decrease in air temperature and a decrease in surface shortwave radiation. The overall increase in NDVI caused by human activity in the grasslands of the Mongolian Plateau was primarily positive, with around 18.37% of the region being beneficial. Climate change and human activity both affect NDVI variations in Mongolian Plateau grasslands, which are spatially heterogeneous. Moderate ecological engineering and agricultural production activities are crucial for vegetation recovery. This work is crucial to further understanding surface–atmosphere interactions in arid and semi-arid regions in the context of global climate change.

Achieving Realistic Runoff in the Western United States with a Land Surface Model Forced by Dynamically Downscaled Meteorology

Abstract In this study, we calibrate a regional climate model’s (RCM) underlying land surface model (LSM). In addition to providing a realistic representation of runoff across the hydroclimatically diverse western United States, this is done to take advantage of the RCM’s ability to physically resolve meteorological forcing data in ungauged regions, and to prepare the calibrated hydrologic model for tight coupling, or the ability to represent land surface–atmosphere interactions, with the RCM. Specifically, we use a 9-km resolution meteorological forcing dataset across the western United States, from the fifth generation ECMWF Reanalysis (ERA5) downscaled by the Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) regional climate model, as an offline forcing for Noah-Multiparameterization (Noah-MP). We detail the steps involved in producing an LSM capable of accurately representing runoff, including physical parameterization selection, parameter calibration, and regionalization to ungauged basins. Based on our model evaluation from 1954 to 2021 for 586 basins with daily natural streamflow, the streamflow bias is reduced from 24.2% to 4.4%, and the median daily Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) is improved from 0.12 to 0.36. When validating against basins with monthly natural streamflow data, we obtain a similar reduction in bias and a median monthly NSE improvement from 0.18 to 0.56. In this study, we also discover the optimal setup when using a donor-basin method to regionalize parameters to ungauged basins, which can vary by 0.06 NSE for unique designs of this regionalization method. Significance Statement This study provides useful guidance for improving a land surface model to accurately represent runoff across a spatially extensive and hydroclimatically diverse region (the western United States). The land surface model is updated to represent runoff more accurately at gauged basins, and then additionally updated for basins without observational data using a mathematical approach called the donor-basin method. We make use of a regional climate model’s reanalysis-derived meteorological data and its underlying land surface model to achieve realistic runoff. The calibrated land surface model can thus be tightly coupled in subsequent studies in a manner that should more accurately reflect runoff conditions. Findings from this study will serve as a useful reference for the atmospheric (and hydrologic) modeling communities and their ability to represent large-scale hydrology accurately.
