Bibliometric characterization of colombian dental journals indexed in the second update of 2014 Publindex

Aim: To characterize the Colombian journals of dentistry indexed in the second update of Publindex 2014 from the bibliometric point of view, to describe the tendencies of the publications in the thematic areas of dentistry.
 Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional documentary study that carried out a bibliometric analysis of the scientific articles published in seven dental journals (Revista de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Antioquia, CES Odontología, Universitas Odontologica, Revista Nacional de Odontología, Acta Odontológica Colombiana, Revista Odontos Odontologia Integral y Revista Colombiana de Investigación en Odontología) recognized and categorized in the second update of Publindex 2014.
 Results: A total of 1587 publications (of which 62% were original articles derived from research) were identified in a A2 category (360), two in B category (636) and four in C category (332).
 Conclusions: The bibliometric analysis of the eight journals evidences that the Revista de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Antioquia and the Revista CES Odontología, being the oldest, are the journals that have best adapted to Publindex guidelines, the only journals included in SciELO and the two journals with the highest index h5 –five and seven respectively– of Google Scholar.

Mechanisms of Resistance to Silver Nanoparticles in Endodontic Bacteria: A Literature Review

In recent years, the use and research in nanomaterials have increased considerably. In dentistry, nanomaterials have been investigated in all their specialties like dental prosthesis, implantology, dental operative, periodontics, and endodontics. The nanomaterials are investigated in the areas of dentistry due to their application in the improvement of the physical and chemical properties of conventional materials, as well as the use of the antimicrobial activity of nanomaterials such as silver nanoparticles. Recently, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been studied for their use as an endodontic irrigator due to their high antimicrobial activity. But little is known about the possible mechanisms of the adaptation to AgNPs by endodontic bacteria. These mechanisms may be intrinsic (such as efflux pumps, downregulation of porins, and chromosomal resistance genes) or extrinsic (such as point and adaptive mutations and plasmids with resistance genes) adaptation systems. In addition to this, it has been reported that coselection or coregulation of metal resistance mechanisms, as in the case of nanoparticles, is accompanied by increased resistance to various antibiotics. For these reasons, the objective of this article is to do a review of the literature on the possible mechanisms used by endodontic bacteria to generate resistance to silver nanoparticles and the possible side effects of these mechanisms.

Toxina botulínica na Odontologia

Clostridium botulinum is an anaerobic bacter, which produces untileight types of toxins. The botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) is the most potentamong then, largely used in clinical procedures and approved forseveral therapeutic instances. The Allergan Inc. company was the first toproduce BTX-A commercially called as “Botox®”. The therapeutic useof BOTOX® is approved by ANVISA in Brazil since 2000, followed byFood and Drug Administrartion in 2002. In Brazil, the Federal Councilof Dentistry recognizes BOTOX® by 198/2019 law and its utilizationin procedures such as facial reconcilement; or in therapeutics suchas bruxism, hypertrophy of chew muscles, temporomandibular jointdysfunction, sialorrhea, asymmetry smile, and gingival profusion. Despiteits temporal use, the results are very interesting. BTX-A side effects areconsidered for uses in miastenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton Syndrome,which has, in common, a reduced acetylcholine release in synapses. Thus,the aim of this work was to review the main BTX-A uses in dentistry area,once its use has growing largely in aesthetics and in dentistry disorders.Herein, we report the low risk in the use of BTX-A, with several interestingbenefits on dentistry areas, improving the quality of life and the selfesteem

The difficult science in making science difficult

What to do when your manuscript is violently debased by the reviewers of a journal? What to understand of such forceful affront to your knowledge and ethical principles? Why is it necessary to look abroad for quality and creativity when these qualities areinherent to Brazilians? Why does the feeling of “Colony” rule over the country that occupies the second place in scientific publication in the area of Dentistry? Why do regulators of the Brazilian academic management system themselves devalue Brazilian journals and maintain unclear rules policy1? Amazingly, these are questions and reflections that are apparently not restricted to our area of knowledge.

Uma análise retrospectiva de lesões malignas e desordens potencialmente malignas em sete anos

The early diagnosis of Oral Cancer and the clinical detection of several potentially malignant lesions can be achieved by the opportunistic Screening of the Oral Mucosa of patients that search for dental assistance. The aim of this study was to perform a retrospective analysis of the origin and prevalence of malignant lesions of the oral mucosa as well as the potentially malignant disorders on patients assisted at the Stomatology and Oral Pathology Clinic of the Naval Dental Center (Odontoclinica Central da Marinha-OCM), from May 2011 to April 2018. The method used was the analysis of the clinical digital charts during this period. Independent variables were gender, age, skin, tobacco use, alcohol use; while dependent variables were the existence of malignant or potentially malignant disorders. Forty-five malignant lesions and 177 potentially malignant disorders were recorded. Among them, 25 malignant lesions and 136 potentially malignant disorders were diagnosed at the OCM. This study showed the importance of active search for lesions of oral cavity and the detection of several lesions of oral cavity by the diverse areas in Dentistry.

Root canal working length determination using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

Introduction Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) represents unique supporting diagnostic tool in all areas of dentistry as well as endodontics. One of the uses in endodontics is determining working length of the root canals-odontometry. The aim of this paper was to test the efficacy of CBCT application in determining working length of root canals. Methods Forty-three extracted human teeth were placed in three wax models shaped as a horseshoe. Preoperatively, CBCT model scanning (voxel size: 0.2 mm) was performed. Access cavities were prepared and working length determined by introducing expanders #08 into the root canal until the apical foramen. The length was measured using a micrometer odontometer. The CBCT working length was simply measured by following the line between the apical foramen and the selected reference point. Two experienced operators performed all measurements, independently. The t-test was used to compare the obtained values. Results CBCT measurements showed small deviation from manual measurements. The mean value of the absolute difference between CBCT measurements and manual measurements was 0.39 mm (0.25-0.74 mm). The results of the t test (t = 0.311; p = 0.757) showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the odontometry performed by the endodontic instrument and odontometry performed using CBCT. Conclusion the CBCT measurement is reliable method for determining working length of root canals. In 94.29% of examined teeth, discrepancies less than 1 mm were found, which was not of clinical significance.

Reanatomização de dente conóide com resina composta por meio de técnica de aplicação simplificada

A beautiful smile is often considered to have an important role on people’s lives, since it contributes to self-confidence and social relationships. Therefore, dental discrepancies such as conoid teeth could affect negatively one’s life and, as long as the patient desires, intervention should take place. Conoid teeth have significant alterations of basic anatomy, size and shape, which lead to a non-proportional smile. This case report regards to a reshape of a conoid lateral incisor, using direct composites, in order to help the orthodontic work. The chosen technique to provide this reshape was developed by the Styleitaliano® group, in order to simplify the restorative steps, using only three composite shades (one for dentin, one for enamel and one for optical effect). This case report emphasizes that different dentistry areas, such as Cosmetic Dentistry and Orthodontics must perform together in order to achieve good results, especially in cases that require shape changes.

Metal-free implant-supported single-tooth restorations. Part II: Hybrid abutment crowns and material selection.

In many areas of restorative dentistry, metal-free materials offer an alternative to metal-based restorations while ensuring high levels of biocompatibility and esthetics. Rapidly evolving CAD/CAM technology has significantly expanded the range of materials available, providing access to materials classes and their combinations not previously available within conventional manufacturing, such as zirconia ceramics and hybrid ceramics. In addition, digital methods offer previously unavailable options in diagnostics, greater planning reliability, better material quality through standardization of the manufacturing process, and reproducibility - significant benefits that can be used to advantage, especially in oral implantology. Even though technological progress in the field of metal-free materials has given rise to considerable improvements in their mechanical properties over the decades, their clinical long-term success is still very much dependent on an appropriate indication and proper material selection, on the knowledge and skills of the dental practitioner and dental technician, and on an adequate occlusion concept. The high rate of innovation - both with regard to the materials themselves and to CAD/CAM technology - therefore requires an adequate level of prior knowledge to sensibly and successfully implement the wide range of possibilities. It is becoming more and more puzzling for users to find their way around the many different new techniques and materials. This review article provides an up-to-date overview of the possibilities and limitations of metal-free implant-supported single-tooth restorations. This second part discusses hybrid abutment crowns and materials selection. Resultant treatment concepts are presented and evaluated based on clinical examples.

Laminate veneers: mimetizing nature through anatomical remodeling – case report

OBJECTIVE: Dental aesthetics is one of the areas of dentistry that has most advanced in terms of procedures, techniques and materials. Changes in color, shape, and texture are commonly cited as grounds for complaint, which are sometimes characterized by details, making the work challenging. The objective of this work is to report the planning and execution of a clinical case of smile harmonization with ceramic laminates for remodeling smile.CASE DESCRITION: A male patient consulted a specialist to refine the appearance of his smile that already had a satisfactory pattern of color and texture. The planning was started using digital smile planning, followed by diagnostic waxing of the elements involved. The planning approval took place through the Mock up. The dental grinding performed was minimal and followed a silicone wear guide. The pieces were made in lithium disilicate and installed under absolute isolation according to the cementing protocol of the material. The finishing and polishing completed the installation of the pieces, removing excesses and guaranteeing periodontal compatibility.CONCLUSION: We conclude that indirect aesthetic treatments currently have a minimally invasive character and are highly accepted due to their ability to remodel the smile with perfection and naturalness.

Educational actions and campaigns in the area of dentistry geared towards children are addressed, focusing on the introduction of dental cabinets, or offices, at public schools and the creation of "good teeth" competitions to spread modern precepts of hygiene. Dentists were key agents in the spread of "modern dental science" at schools and different institutions, taking part in educational activities and also in actions and struggles for public policies that recognized the issues of oral health. The article is based on extensive research of a variety of documental sources and, through dialogues with the new cultural history, questions the ways oral health was prescribed in the early decades of the twentieth century.

Bioethics criteria in Dentistry research of humans

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to identify and relate the work that adopted bioethical principles applied to research on humans in the area of dentistry published in scientific journals. Methods: The selection of work was done using the Virtual Health Library (VHL), including the following databases: Literature Latino-American and Caribbean Health Sciences, Scientific Electronic Library Online and International Literature on Health Sciences. It was evaluated in the last ten years, researches using the descriptors: Bioethics, Research, Human, Dental, Autonomy, Beneficence, Non-maleficence, and Justice. Results: Two hundred and seventy eight studies found, however only 12 were selected by following the criteria adopted in this study. Conclusion: Among the four principles of bioethics addressed in this study, the principle of autonomy was the most discussed in literature, followed the principle of justice. Further studies should be conducted in order to carry the development of bioethics in research with human made in dentistry.

SB na escola: desenvolvimento de uma plataforma educativa para os usuários do ‘Programa Saúde na Escola’

Objetivo: Descrever o desenvolvimento de uma plataforma virtual educativa, na área da Odontologia, voltada para a capacitação e educação dos profissionais e comunidade que atuam no ‘Programa Saúde na Escola’ (PSE), na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Material e Métodos: A elaboração seguiu um fluxograma de produção utilizando o pacote Adobe de software e tecnologias padrão da web HTML e CSS, entre os anos de 2016 e 2017 no Centro de Teleodontologia da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro, a partir de informações da prevalência de cárie de participantes do PSE da área programática 3.3 do Rio de Janeiro, bem como da percepção de cirurgiões-dentistas quanto ao processo de trabalho naquela área. Em acréscimo, na sequência, foram construídos materiais educativos e informativos voltados de acordo para cada área envolvida no PSE: cirurgiões-dentistas, gestores e comunidade escolar. Resultados: A plataforma virtual constou de módulos relacionados ao aprimoramento para o trabalho de promoção de saúde, levantamento epidemiológico amplo e técnicas intervencionistas em campo bem como, vislumbrou ser uma ferramenta para o desenvolvimento de ações relacionadas ao Programa Saúde na Escola (PSE) baseando-se nos cinco componentes do programa e nos resultados das investigações para a conformação da mesma. Conclusão: Elaborou-se uma plataforma virtual denominada SB na escola, que visa melhorar o desenvolvimento das ações dos gestores e profissionais de odontologia que atuam no PSE, além da comunidade escolar, através de tecnologias de comunicação atrativas e acessíveis aos profissionais envolvidos e difundindo informações em saúde bucal.

This literature review is based on the degree of knowledge of root resorption of legal representatives in patients who are treated in the area of orthodontics at the dental clinic of the Catholic University of Cuenca Knowing the importance of orthopedic treatment as throughout this process can have different complications such as sterile inflammation of the periodontal ligaments which produce long term root resorption This can be caused by several factors such as excessive force at the time of treatment equipment used and the treatment time It is therefore important to have the right skills before making and the child undergo treatment so we can prevent future complications General purpose Determine the degree of knowledge of the legal representatives of children treated orthopedic through surveys of the same in order to obtain information about their knowledge Materials and methods The following research work will be conducted using scientific papers obtained at S cielo Pub med Google Scholar and D space which have been made in the last years plus a survey record was created which met criteria for basic diagnostics to assess the degree of knowledge of root resorption in the legal representatives of children treated orthopedically this tab was valued by an endodontist academic couple the same that was filled by the investigator interrogating the investigation Conclusion It was concluded that most parents do not know the difference orthopedics and orthodontics but equally take their children to orthopedic treatment because of the limited information they have it comes to removing the dental crowding of the teeth without knowing much part of the treatment But they have positive knowledge of the elements of oral hygiene but do not know how to perform dental hygiene properly due to lack of information professionals traffickers It could also conclude that most of the parents of these children know and are aware that a good dental and orthopedic treatment depends on frequent views dentist to correct their dental condition and give a good occlusion and esthetics child patient In the same way delve who do not know whether the treatment brings consequences if prolonged long but equally attend the faculty of the University because they want to prevent a crowded teeth future of their children and thus get dental harmony

Terapia postural e manual nas disfunções temporomandibulares

Objetivos: mostrar os benefícios da terapia manual e postural nas disfunções da articulação temporomandibular (DTM) e citar as técnicas que podem ser utilizadas no tratamento dessas disfunções. Metodologia: Foi realizada uma revisão narrativa da literatura científica sobre o assunto em livros das áreas de Fisioterapia e Odontologia, artigos científicos através de periódicos e sites referentes a publicações dos últimos dez anos, utilizando como palavras chaves: terapia manual e postural, disfunções da articulação temporomandibular e articulação temporomandibular. Resultados: Foram encontrados 1.930 estudos, dentre os quais 602 foram selecionados para leitura de título/resumo e 569 excluídos devido à falta de obediência aos critérios de inclusão e, assim, um total de 33 referências foram incluídas. A literatura relata várias técnicas manuais e posturais como recursos benéficos para o tratamento da DTM, pois atua desde a fase de prevenção até a reabilitação, utilizando técnicas de terapia manual e postural com finalidade de reagrupar os músculos comprometidos e devolver a funcionalidade da articulação temporomandibular. Conclusão: A fisioterapia é de suma importância para o tratamento das DTM, pois tem como objetivo ativar a circulação sanguínea, aliviar a dor, promover o relaxamento muscular e reeducar a postura, visando promover o bem-estar do paciente.

Osseointegration of zirconia implants with 3 varying surface textures and a titanium implant: A histological and micro-CT study

Zirconium - a bioinert metal - in comparison with titanium implants, offers a variety of potential advantages for use in the esthetic area of dentistry due to its tooth-like color. Zirconium dental implants are considered to be an alternative method of treatment to conventional titanium dental implants for patients with a thin gingival biotype. This study was designed to study the bone tissue response to new zirconia implants with modified surfaces in comparison with commercially available titanium dental implants and commercially available zirconia implants. The study was carried out on a group of 12 16-month-old minipigs. New zirconia implants with 3 different surfaces were used: M1 - blasted surface, M2 - etched surface and M3 - blasted and etched surface (Maxon Motor GmbH, Sexau, Germany) and compared to conventional titanium implants with an sandblasted and acid etched (SLA) surface (Straumann GmbH, Freiburg, Germany) and commercially available zirconia implants (Ziterion GmbH, Uffenheim, Germany). Histological and micro-computed tomopgraphy (micro-CT) evaluation was performed. In the micro-CT assessment, the average bone-implant contact (BIC) of the zirconia experimental implants was 41.44%. In particular, the BIC% for M1 was 39.72%, for M2 it was 43.97%, and for M3 - 40.63%; in the control group it was 49.63% and 27.77% for ceramic and titanium control implants, respectively. The intra-group analysis showed no statistically important differences between the BIC values for implants in any group. However, the analysis of BIC for different regions of the same implant showed statistically significant differences in all of the groups between the results of the threaded region and the neck and the apex. The results of our study suggest that zirconia implants with modified surfaces display features of osseointegration similar to those of titanium implants. These results are promising in using zirconia implants for dental applications in the future.

Evaluation of Fatigue Behavior in Dental Implants from In Vitro Clinical Tests: A Systematic Review

In the area of dentistry, there is a wide variety of designs of dental implant and materials, especially titanium, which aims to avoid failures and increase their clinical durability. The purpose of this review was to evaluate fatigue behavior in different connections and implant materials, as well as their loading conditions and response to failure. In vitro tests under normal and dynamic loading conditions evaluating fatigue at implant and abutment connection were included. A search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct. Data extraction was performed independently by two reviewers. The quality of selected studies was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook proposed by the tool for clinical trials. Nineteen studies were included. Fourteen studies had an unclear risk and five had high risk of bias. Due to the heterogeneity of the data and the evaluation of the quality of the studies, meta-analysis could not be performed. Evidence from this study suggests that both internal and morse taper connections presented a better behavior to failure. However, it is necessary to unify criteria in the methodological design of in vitro studies, following methodological guidelines and establishing conditions that allow the homogenization of designs in ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards.

Evaluation of in vivo digital root reconstruction based on anatomical characteristics of the periodontal ligament using cone beam computed tomography

This study’s aim was to develop and validate an approach to automatically extract and reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) digital root models from in vivo teeth based on the anatomical characteristics of the periodontal ligament using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data. Prior to undergoing dental extractions for orthodontic purposes, the CBCT data of each study participant were collected and imported into Mimics software to reconstruct 3D in vivo digital root models (test models). Twenty roots of 17 teeth extracted from the study’s participants were scanned using a dental scanner to obtain 3D in vitro digital root models (reference models). The 3D morphological deviation between the reference and test models was compared; the 3D size of the bucco-lingual, mesio-distal, and root length dimensions were calculated. This approach achieved an average 3D morphological deviation of 0.21 mm, and the average size error in the bucco-lingual, mesio-distal, and root length dimensions were −0.35 mm, −0.17 mm, and 0.47 mm, respectively. This new automatic extraction approach rapidly and accurately reconstructs 3D in vivo root models with detailed morphological information, and has the potential to improve diagnostic and treatment work flow in orthodontic clinics, as well as in other areas of dentistry.
