A Companion to <em>Where Else</em>, Hong Kong Literature’s newest addition; interviews with contributors

Given the growing interest in Hong Kong and the region’s literature which provides insight into the experiences of one of Britain’s last colonies, Ms Elizabeth E. Chung interviewed editors for and contributors to the new Where Else: An International Hong Kong Poetry Anthology in the summer of 2023. In total, ten interviews took place in-person, online, or via email, covering a range of topics including the creative and critical contexts of the anthology and the creative methods employed by poets and artists, as well as the future expectations from this publication. The ensuing interviews (of which the contributor interviews are included here) result in a companion to the anthology: a revelatory insight into the transnational attention to Hong Kong, its history, and its future.

Romantic Lyrics of Dr. Jodha Chandra Sanasam

Dr. Jodha Chandra Sanasam (1944-2021) was an eminent Professor and surgeon of the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS: 1972), Imphal. He was very popular in Manipuri literature both Poetry and Novel. He got the Sahitya Akademi Award, New Delhi in 2012. Some Manipuri scholars remarked him as ‘the second literary incarnation of the first Manipuri poet and novelist, Dr. Kamal (1900-1934).’ ​First of all, I compared with the literary art of Dr. Jodha Chandra Sanasam and Dr. Kamal. Then I critically analysis on his lyrical verse, Ngaseedi Ashengba Haydoklage (Today, I shall tell the truth: 2009) with reference to Dr. Kamal’s novel, MADHABI (1931) and anthology of verses, LEIPARENG (Garland: 1931), English romantic poet, Thomas Moore (1779-1851)’s poem, ‘ The Light of the Other Days’ , Sanskrit epic poet, Kalidasa's MEGHADOOT and Manipuri romantic poet, Khumanthem Ibohal (1924-1988)’s NUNGSI KEINA KADA (To the beloved KEINA: Ballad: 1964), etc. At last, I concluded to give his literary beauties and art forms of Dr. Jodha Chandra Sanasam with some suitable quotations from his above-mentioned book.

Planetary gardening via female-led anthologies of women’s poetry in French

This article showcases the fruitfulness of cross-fertilizing geographical and literary methods to address the complexities of women’s poems being compiled into an anthology – a process of negotiation compounded by male domination of the canon. Inspired by Gilles Clément’s reflections on the ‘planetary garden’, we radically posit female-edited poetry anthologies as a prism for rethinking ecosystem management. Focussing on three landmark collections of French-language women’s writings, we illustrate how a wide variety of cultural production is essential for a flourishing future, just as greater biodiversity enhances an ecoregion’s resilience in the face of stressors like air pollution or heat shock. Within this experimental interdisciplinary framework, two main questions are explored: first, how an appreciation of anthologies through ecopoetics propels scalar thinking about issues to do with the climate crisis and social justice; second, what happens when a poem is transplanted into an anthological milieu, where a plurality of distributed agencies gives a collective sense of becoming more than just a sum of distinctive parts. Proposing an innovative model whereby a ‘poem-flower’ takes root in an ‘anthology-garden’, our article ultimately argues that paying attention to female-led anthologizations’ diversifying role can enhance thinking about ecological sustainability as much as social inclusion.

The author of the article analyzes the first literary attempts to reflect the experience of Russia’s full‑scale war against Ukraine. The main attention is paid to the problem of the traumatic experience of the war, based on the first feelings of shock and its consequences. The researcher considers three books (anthologies of poems, essays and diaries Poetry without Shelter, The War‑2022 and Oksana Zabuzhko’s essay A Long Journey), which were published during the first year of the war. These are dissimilar books, but they represent one problem from different points of view. The texts are those of contemporary Ukrainian authors who survived the traumatic experience of the Russian invasion in February 2022 in different places and under different circumstances. The author of the article interprets these works as a cultural tool in the process of mastering the state of shock, and later – as a mechanism for the verbal representation of the trauma itself.

On Transliterating the Book of Odes

The Chinese Book of Odes (詩經), a poetry anthology that is possibly the earliest literary monument in any still-living language, used phonetic effects such as rhyme, metre, and alliteration to achieve its poetic artistry. However, these effects have been largely obliterated by changes in the sounds of Chinese over almost three millennia, and the non-alphabetic nature of Chinese script has concealed the fact that the effects once existed. The author discusses some of the issues that arise in compiling an edition of the Odes that uses transliteration of the original pronunciation, as reconstructed by recent historical linguistics, to restore their “speech music”, as well as issues in producing new English versions of the poetry which come as close as possible to show present-day readers what the poems were for their first readers.

Feelings Of Heaviness, Helpless, And Resignation In The Poetry "Lau Tarji'in" By Farouk Juwaidah

This study aims to identify and describe the style of language contained in the poem "Lau Tarji'in" by Farouk Juwaidah. The object of study in this study is the poem "Lau Tarji'in" by Farouk Juwaidah which is contained in the poetry anthology "Lau Annana Lam Naftariq" by Farouk Juwaidah. The data collection method in this study uses the method of listening to documentation techniques. The data analysis method in this study uses descriptive and stylistic methods to examine the style of language in the poem "Lau Tarji'in". The results of this study found that in the poem "Lau Tarji'in" by Farouk Juwaidah there are several figurative languages such as hyperbole, rhetorical questions, repetition, climax, personification, simile, metonymy, synecdoche, and simile. The style of language in the poem "Lau Tarji'in" contains meaning. The meaning revealed from the use of figurative language in the poem "Lau Tarji'in" is the meaning of heaviness, helplessness, and surrender

IBN ARABI'S CREATIVE IMAGINATION IN ODHY POETRY OF SUFISM FIGURES IN HIS ANTHOLOGY RAHASIA SANG GURU SUFI

This research aims to analyze the Sufism figure in Odhy poetry anthology Rahasia Sang Guru Sufi through Ibn Arabi's creative imagination. The Sufism figure has an important role in the Sufism discourse, and creative imagination is related to literary discourse. Ibn Arabi’s creative imagination combined indicated Ibn Arabi himself and his imagination. Ibn Arabi’s thought is compatible with the literature and applied as a theoretical approach to mystical literature, namely the work of Odhy, the Sufism figure poetry. Those terms denote part and relate to Sufism studies, especially a murshid (guru) to guide the spiritual guidance through stations until the peak. Those path finders indicate the creative imagination that Odhy used in his poetry collection; at the same time, the literature has related to that imagination. This research reveals the mutual connection between literature and Islamic mysticism based on imagination. This figure is a person who wrote down his role in the discourse and history of Sufism. The data on Sufism figures are collected through the descriptive method from the primary source of those anthologies. Besides, the historical approach explains his poetries in those anthologies. This research found the Sufism figures as a thought in Islamic Mysticism in history through Ibn Arabi’s creative imagination and an image resource in literature.

James Reshoulde and Elizabethan Scribal Culture

Abstract: Bodleian Library, MS Rawl. poet. 85 (Ra), and Marsh's Library, Dublin, MS Z 3.5.21 (Ma), are two of the most important anthologies of Elizabethan lyric poetry. We have long known that Ra was compiled at St. John's College, Cambridge, apparently by John Finet. He credits his fellow Johnian, James Reshoulde, with two poems in Ra, one of which is answered by a poem in Ma. Reshoulde is not named in Ma, but the discovery of his handwriting in this miscellany confirms that it, too, was compiled at St. John's and drew upon a common store of in-house and external writings, including poems written by courtiers at the apogee of Elizabethan society. The relationships among these elite texts shed important new light on how lyric poetry circulated in the age's scribal culture and how these practices exerted a democratizing influence on what is generally considered a culture of exclusive coteries.

Towards a Problematic Canon: Indian Poetry Anthologies and the Construction of Modernism

The history of modern Indian poetry in English as evidenced in anthologies is riddled with many modernist tendencies, both linguistic and political. Within anthologies, poetry becomes not merely literary and artistic pieces, but agents in a larger narrative. To establish an argument for Indian poetic modernism (post-1950) in anthologies requires an inquiry into the processes in which editors, through the paratextual matters, (titles, prefaces, introductory notes, headnotes, endnotes etc.) help create a persuasiveness about newness or modernity. With more than 200 Indian poetry anthologies published since 1950, there is also the problem of selecting an authoritative volume that reflects the national canon. By juxtaposing Gérard Genette’s (1991) paratextual theory and Ramond Williams’ (1977) epochal theory of classifying the dominant, residual, and emergent cultural tendencies, this paper attempts to understand poetry anthologies as commodities and cultural vehicles constantly striving for dominance. An argument is made that any canon – modernist or otherwise – is a sub-product of this cultural and material struggle. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to provide an alternate understanding of the arrival of modern Indian English poetry canon as a form of construction that occurs within the pages of anthologies.

The Use of Canva and Powtoon Learning Media in Learning Poetry Materials to Improve Student Learning Outcomes for High School

This study aims to test the effectiveness of Canva and Powtoon learning media in learning poetry material to improve student learning outcomes in class X IPA 1 SMAN 1 Kelapa Kampit. The research subjects were class X IPA 1 students at Kelapa Kampit State Senior High School. The method used in this research is research and development. The application of information technology-based learning materials is expected to improve teaching standards in the classroom. The study results show that the Canva and Powtoon learning media are appropriate for learning Indonesian for class X IPA 1 SMA Negeri 1 Kelapa Kampit. This is because it meets the requirements for media validation, material validation, and evaluation validation. The pretest and posttest results found that Canva and Powtoon media helped class X IPA 1 SMA Negeri 1 Kelapa Kampit understand the material needed to recognize the atmosphere, themes, and meaning in the poetry anthology. Based on this, the Canva and Powtoon learning tools can be developed in teaching Indonesian, especially when teaching students how to recognize the atmosphere, themes, and meaning of poetry anthologies.

The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method with a structural approach. Data analysis techniques include data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. validity test is done by triangulation. As for the physical and mental structures in the poetry anthology Sincere For The Wrong People by Boy Candra 2022. a. Physical structure (1) Diction (37 words with connotative meaning), (2) Images (23 visual images, 2 auditory images, 9 tactile images, and 1 tasting images), (3) Concrete words (35 words), (4) Figurative language (4 metaphors, 12 personifications, 16 hyperboles), (5) Typography (2 stanzas 5 poems, three stanzas 5 poems). b. Inner structure (1) Theme (overall on the theme of romance), (2) Taste (found 9 kinds of feelings namely: sad, disappointed, disgusted, resigned, anxious, angry, hate, sad, and empty), (3) Tone and Atmosphere (the tone is sad, gloomy, disappointed, while the atmosphere is sad, suffering, sad, and anxious), (4) Mandate (the whole poem has a message with implied meaning).

The Narration of the Female Workers’ Coffins in Literary Works

This article describes the human trafficking and humanitarian violence experienced by the Indonesian Workers ‘Tenaga Kerja Indonesia’ (TKI) in general and the Female Workers ‘Tenaga Kerja Wanita’ (TKW) in particular employed abroad. The thing exerienced by the TKWs is referred to as the coffin ‘peti mati’ by the writers through the poems and short stories in the Poetry Anthology Series One (2018) and Series Two (2019/2020) with the theme The Massage of Peace from the Land of Flobamora ‘Pesan Perdamaian dari Bumi Flobamora’. What is the essence of ‘the coffin’ and why what is experienced by the TKWs employed abroad is referred as ‘the coffin’? The paraphrasing method and the qualitative descriptive method and the structural and semiotic approach were applied to find the answer to this question. The result shows that the ‘coffin’ used in the poems and short stories denotatively and connotatively shows the suffering that the TKWs suffer from and how they struggle by themselves, showing that literary works have time, space and place for exposing different social realities, one of which is the tragic plight by the TKWs.

A Rich Inheritance: An Ecocritical Reading of Ken Saro-Wiwa’s Short Stories and Poetry

ABSTRACT This article examines Ken Saro-Wiwa’s (1941–1995) vision for the Ogoni people through an ecocritical interrogation of his short fiction and poetry. Academic analyses of the Ogoni struggle have been unfailingly anthropocentric in their approaches. This article challenges this dominant epistemology by centring the non-human world. I examine Saro-Wiwa’s collection of short stories ‘A Forest of Flowers’, the poetry anthology ‘Songs in a Time of War’, and his final poems written in prison in the 1990s. An ecocritical reading of these texts will reveal how Saro-Wiwa invokes pastoral tropes and romantic portrayals of a pre-oil ecological paradise to articulate a primordial eco-nationalist Ogoni identity. Throughout his fiction, the fate of the people and the natural world are intertwined, and notions of home and community expand beyond the human to incorporate the ecosystem of the bioregion.

Mao Zedong’s Poetry Translated by Eugene Eoyang in Sunflower Splendor: A Textual and Cultural Interpretation

Translating Mao Zedong’s poetry into English has been a significant cause since the founding of New China and aroused great academic attention in China and other countries. In 1975, Eugene Eoyang, a Chinese American scholar, translated eight poems of Mao and published them later in the remarkable poetry anthology Sunflower Splendor, which has made a considerable contribution to the promotion and canonization of Mao’s poetry as well as traditional Chinese poetry in the English world. Eoyang is a scholar translator who knows well about both cultures, the identity, cultural concepts, translation strategies, and other aspects that he demonstrated in his translation are of great reference value compared with other versions home and abroad. By analyzing the textual and cultural features and specific cases in his translation, the translator’s valuable first-hand experience, along with the profound literary and cultural attainments reflected in the translation process, can be learned to guide future translation and promotion of Mao’s poetry in foreign cultures.

World Literature and the Rise of Sub-nationalisms in Indian Vernaculars: British Romantic Poets in Gujarati Translation

This paper focuses on how world literature played a crucial role in shaping a sub-national Gujarati identity. Narsinhrao Divatia (1859-1937) – the well-known Gujarati poet, critic and linguist presented partial or complete translations of British Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley and Byron from the fourth part of F.T. Palgrave’s Golden Treasury (1861) in his seminal poetry anthology Kusummala (1887). This translation played a significant role in redefining Gujarati poetics and Gujarati identity. It also elevated the cultural status of Gujarati literature by introducing Sanskrit poetics in the Gujarati translations. However, in the Gujarati literary tradition, Divatia’s translations of the British Romantic poets are treated as ‘nakal’ (copy) and derivative of Western poetry. This paper argues that the Gujarati translations of the British Romantic poets in Kusummala (1887) cannot be dismissed as cheap copies, but have to be read as refractions, a kind of rewriting elaborated by André Lefevre. Kusummala is an example of an interliterary text where Gujarati translations of the British Romantic poets are mediated with the help of Sanskrit poetics. This paper also argues that the sub-national Gujarati identity goes beyond the dichotomy of Vishwa and Rashtra, as proposed by Vinay Dharwadker.

British-LatinX writers: Self-representation of the new Latin American diaspora in the UK

This article analyses the first major anthology of English-language British LatinX writers published in the UK, Un Nuevo Sol. British LatinX Writers (flipped eye publishing, 2019). The texts included in this anthology of poetry, short fiction and drama explore the configurations, manifestations and representations of the LatinX experience within the contemporary British canon. The multi-layered texts that form this book illustrate how the British LatinX community represents itself through literature in a distinctive way which also questions existing stereotypes and expectations. Un Nuevo Sol is a good example of the diversity of the literary techniques used by British LatinX authors. These techniques cover from code-switching to magical realism, although realism and experimental writing seem to dominate most of these texts. This is representative of the way in which the literary production of this super-diverse community in the UK results in a super-diverse literary style, as illustrated in this anthology.
